Sohar Aluminum Project Ceremony

E-goverment is vital for region’s economic development The governments in this region must put greater emphasis on information and communications technology for future economic development, an international expert said yesterday. In his keynote address to the Abu Dhabi Summit on Information and Communication Technology, Jordan forecast a promising outlook for the region in developing IT. “There’s great opportunity in this region because you are new countries and able to develop new enterprise systems unlike the US which has 40 years of history in building systems,” he said, noting “you have the skills to invest and the skills to grow.” Earlier, Shaikh Diab Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority in his welcome address said the rapidly changing international environment requires all countries in the region to adopt new programmes and choices for the future.

The opening of Sohar Aluminum Project took place this morning under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Bin Tareq Al Saeed. This project is considered to be one of the most important industrial projects in the Sultanate of Oman at a cost of 925 million Omani Riyals, almost 2.4 billion US dollars. The ceremony was attended by several ministers, key personnel and Sheikhs from Oman and partner countries and Al Batena area, as well as representatives from the private sector.

Abu Dhabi gears up for expansion Abu Dhabi is preparing for a major expansion of its installed generating capacity to meet a projected surge in demand from real estate projects now entering the construction phase. “We expect Abu Dhabi electricity demand to double in the period 2008-13,” Keith Miller, Head of Planning & Studies Department at Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Company (ADWEC), told the MEED Power & Desalination conference in Abu Dhabi on 12 March. “To give you an idea of the scale of these schemes, just one of the mega projects planned, Al-Raha Beach, will have the same population as the entire Western Region.”

Egyptian company awarded Dhs759m ADWEA contract Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin said in a press conference he held here that Egyptian Contracting Company won the contract, predicting a rise in flow of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) to Egypt. “FDIs inflow is expected to jump by 15-20 percent in 2006 from 3.9 billion US Dollars registered in 2005, of which 2.6 billion were in petroleum industries,” he said. Dr. Modieldin reveled that Dubai Holding Company and Egypt’s Investment Authority will sign tomorrow a Memorandum of understanding that provides for cooperation and for possible Dubai Ports investment in eastern Port Saeed. He also said that UAE banks are currently engaged in talks to acquire stakes in Egyptian banks. He described his talks with H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and senior officials here as “fruitful.” Issue No: 1 | ADWEA

TIPS Power Tips to reduce waste and make use of the most indoor and outdoors and make the environement grreener. • Fixing leaks and using low-flow fixtures and appliances can save up to 30% of indoor water use. • Wash fruits and vegetables in a water filled basin instead of running them under water. • Leave frozen food out to defrost instead of pouring hot water over them. • Use buckets of water to wash your car instead of the hose. • Use insulated glass on your windows to keep the cool air in, and heat generating sunlight out. • Avoid using washing machines frequently. Save laundry until you have a full load saving both water and electricity.

Becoming energy markets drive development of power facilities Power-GEN Middle East will be held from January 30 to February 1, at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre. Expert estimations for the next decade indicate that the GCC investments in the field of power generation could reach US $ 50 billion by 2020. Ahmed Humaid Al Mazrouie Managing Director of Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company said ‘hosting of this exhibition and conference reflects the high status acquired by Abu Dhabi emirate in the field of international exhibitions industry. ’He reiterated that ‘booking of the total area of the exhibition is a clear evidence of the success of the plans designed to achieve excellence in the organizing of specialized exhibitions to meet the needs of the UAE and the region in obtaining state-of-theart technologies to expand in power generation projects.’ Al Mazrouie went on to say ‘Power-GEN Middle East 2006 will be the biggest event of its kind held in the region, with over 100 exhibitors already confirming participation. We are expecting the event to have over 200 international and regional companies from the power transmission, distribution and desalination section.’ With the need to almost double current electricity production by 2010 and a target to add 6,000 MW of installed capacity, from the present level of 12,811 MW, electricity and

water authorities throughout the UAE. Strong demand growth coupled with significant structural changes within the electricity sector ensure the UAE will remain a key market in the Middle East for years to come. Further a field, the entire Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region will require more than 74 GW of additional capacity by 2010. A host of large-scale projects are already underway or currently coming up for bid in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran and elsewhere in the region. Major industry players like Black and Veach, GE Energy and Hitachi amongst other world-renowned equipment suppliers will be exhibiting alongside Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), at Power-GEN Middle East. With many of the regional power and water suppliers, engineering companies, government and finance authorities also present, many opportunities will be available to conduct business at the event.
