Hum along with me and channel your inner Fleetwood Mac, “Everywhere.” Have you noticed the dearth of night photos of Porsches? Yes. I noticed that despite the absolute sensuality and beauty of our cars, it is difficult to find pictures of them “in the wild” at night. Seeking to fill this void, I asked Maverick members to provide pictures of P-cars that display the music, the mood, and the magic of “Everywhere.” Take a look and sing along.
“Can you hear me calling…Calling out your name?”
These Porsches are calling to be released into the night. Notice the brightness of Peter Miranda’s 928, freshly coated. Do not miss Pat Carmichael’s mysterious Speed Yellow that is unable to hide inside the garage. I hear them calling, calling out my name. (Photo credits: Anjan Shenoy, Pat Carmichael, Peter Miranda, Daniel Cole)
“I'll speak a little louder. I'll even shout.”
Have you noticed how sunset lights and Porsches shout for attention? Not only am I forever enamored with Chris Cole’s picture, I think Chris Fernandes’ 930 Turbo makes for a stunning play on the lights. These cars don’t need to speak any louder. They are loud enough! (Photo credits: Chris Fernandes, Jason Neal, Pat Gouldy, Chris Cole)
(Continued on next page)
“You know that I'm falling. And I don't know what to say.”
There is something special about Holiday lights serving as the backdrop for a terrific shot. Joann Talty was able to capture Santa in full relief. Notice that Jennifer Duman was caught with a shot of her car under the lights, as well. Lean in and enjoy Jim Hirsch’s picture next to a huge Christmas tree. Yes, I have fallen for these, and I don’t know what to say. (Photo credits: Joann Talty, Brett Versher, Jennifer Duman)
Something’s happening. Happening to me. My friends say I'm acting peculiarly.”
Yes, something happens when I see a Porsche, especially at night. Friends have commented that my reaction is peculiar. I hear them calling, calling out my name. That’s because I want them to come along with me. I cannot help thinking that everywhere is where a Porsche belongs. (Photo credits: Sean Garrity, Paul Wilhide, Jeff Lemond, Anjan Shenoy).
I send a shout out thank you to all Mavericks who submitted pictures to me. Space constraints prevented me from including all submissions. As Region Secretary, I needed help with pictures that matched my need for Porsches “at night.” Everywhere is a fitting end as I submit my final article and close at five years as Region Secretary. Thanks for the memories.
“You know that I'm proud. And I can't get the words out.”
These photos appear to be from professional photo shoots, and I am speechless. Beyond enjoying them, I experience a visceral reaction when I look at them. It doesn’t matter that these Porsches have already arrived at their destinations. I still want to be with them everywhere.(Photo credits: Arjay Cando/Peter Lopez, Randy Luckenbill, Anjan Shenoy, Jeff Lemond)
This final suite of pictures shows that Porsches go out at night for all sorts of regular reasons, whether Greg Butts is getting “go-go juice,” Arjay is finishing a night car wash, or or Roberto Anderson is simply driving about. Do not miss the Palooza shot. (Photo credits: Roberto Anderson, Greg Butts, Arjay Cando, Matthew Quon, Tony Porter).

A picture says . . . a thousand words, over 400 smiles, families and friendships, over 200 Porsches, and Maverick Members enjoying the 2025 kick off partyour biggest All Member Party yet!
Many thanks to our sponsor Porsche Plano.
The Maverick PCA All Member Driving Tour was a big success. The starting point was Gunter High School, where 155 beautiful Porsches filled the parking lot. It was a warm, breezy day and the tour departed at 10 am. We proceeded on some of the curviest roads in the Metroplex, maneuvering our finely-tuned machines down FM-455 and through Celina, finally ending at the Oak + Ivy venue for the All Member Party.
The 15 tour leaders did a great job navigating each run group through the 1-hour tour. There were two driving categories that were available to the members: Modern and Vintage. Some people like to join the Vintage group because they have a vintage automobile, or they have a newer model and simply enjoy a more leisurely, scenic drive through the beautiful countryside. If you have never been on a PCA driving tour, I would highly recommend it, but make sure you sign up early because we can only handle a defined number of cars depending on the tour and conditions, and the slots fill up fast. The National PCA Safety Chair informed us that this tour was the largest PCA one-day tour on record for the whole country in the past 10 years. Great job by all the volunteers, Tour Leaders, and Tour Chairs.
By Randy Luckenbill, Tours Co-Chair
The MWBTW group has been asked why our group creates non-car-related activities. The easy answer is that the women who’ve gathered regularly to participate have a variety of interests. Some members enjoy artistic pursuits, some prefer social events, many of us claim to be foodies, and some just want to drive. Our common thread is that we’re all passionate about our cars and love showing up in them.
I showed up to the All-Member Tour in my new-to-me 2024 Gentian Blue Style Edition Boxster to lead a tour. Here, I met Dawn Williamson when she asked if I had an open passenger seat. I invited her to join me, preparing her for the fun ahead and warning her that I’d be familiarizing myself with the PDK.
At the All-Member Party in our cozy room, we asked women to complete surveys about what they’d like to see our group do and rate some of the past activities. We received 15 responses that afternoon and followed up with a Facebook questionnaire that provided an additional 40. Stay tuned. Maybe you’ll find an activity that's on your bucket list.
Wait! Do you not have a bucket list? In 2008, I watched the 2007 comedydrama, “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. In the film, two terminally ill men proceed with their wish list of things to do before they kick the bucket. I knew walking out of the theater that evening that the movie would change my life. Be it a domestic road trip or a voyage to another country, travel became my passion, and it led to trying many different things. As we age, I’m always encouraging friends to create and cross items off their bucket lists.
Has dumpling making or playing Bunco been on your bucket list? They weren’t on mine, but our March and April activities fell into the “trying new things” category and were such a good time.
Seventeen Mavs attended Irene Yuan’s dumpling class at her Plano restaurant, The Dumpling House, on Tuesday, March 25. At 5:30 pm, our evening began with an assortment of beverages and crispy wontons in a spicy sauce.
Seated on both sides of a long table down the center of the restaurant, we donned food safety gloves to make a seasoned ground pork filling. We filled both wonton wrappers and dumpling dough that we rolled into flat circles. We added green onions, shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, and Chinese chives, as desired.
Irene and her staff whisked away our creations and cooked them for us as we moved to two of the large, round tables for dinner. There, we began with
crab Rangoon, wonton soup, and the Dumplings Trio, complete with our self-made pork creations, chicken and mushroom, and beef and onion varieties. Next, we devoured orange chicken, string beans with ground pork, and steamed and fried rice, followed by their famous chocolate soup dumplings.
We even had a little fun outside, exiting in a proper parade fashion in front of the restaurant. Several minutes later, for those heading south or west, the active sky decided to honor our beauties with a minute or two of pea- to marble-sized hail. Those on the President George Bush Turnpike faced traffic that came to a complete stop, forcing them to sit there and simply take it. While my girlfriend did her best to calm my nerves as
we were heading West on Parker Road, I made the difficult decision to hit the gas to escape it as quickly as possible. If you’re feeling a little sick to your stomach reading this, be relieved that I haven’t heard of any damage reported by the drivers.
When a game night idea was tossed around in our monthly Zoom meeting, excitement arose with the thought of trying Bunco. Some of us had never played before, some hadn’t played in a while, and a few are seasoned pros.
We hit a goal of 12 players who had a free afternoon on Saturday, April 5. Pier Burgess hosted the event in her garage, Angela James ran the games, and we each brought a dish to pass. We socialized, sipped, and snacked. We played two rounds before one of the players had to leave for an evening event.
Angela scored the most buncos, Chelo Carter and Pier tied for most wins, and Jackie Dove won for the most losses. Angela curated three Easter-themed door prizes won by Beth Wilt, Theresa Bradford, and by me. We left that afternoon hoping to make this a quarterly event.
Ever lose a bet and have to perform an agreed-upon chore? One year, Pat Talty and I played the NCAA brackets, and like most years, I lost and owed him a car detail. Since I can’t deliver spot and smudge free windows, that was the last time I ever had to detail any of his cars!
Cyndi Banish, Wendy Shoffit, and I put together the first Mavs Charity tournament. Wendy designed the graphic for Slipstream and Facebook, Cyndi expertly navigated the ClubRegistration end, and I handled the CBS set up. I think we all learned something and were thankful to those who participated. Cyndi won the tournament and a $50 Amazon gift card, Amanda Damore got her money back, and the Hope Shelter won big with a $200 donation.
Most of you know that I wouldn’t be writing this regular feature if it weren’t for the chain of events that started when Michael Durovick asked to take photos of me with my car six years ago. I’ve enjoyed my friendship with Michael and his wife, Wanda, and we really want to thank him for his time and all the excellent photos he took of so many of us while living here in North Texas. We wish him well in his retirement and on his new adventures in North Carolina.

Challenge Cup Event 2 of the 2025 Autocross Season was again at Lone Star Park on March 9. The weather was cold again and started out rainy/drizzling all morning. The course this time kept speeds down with multiple slaloms and places to accelerate as well as check speed abruptly. The Porsches ran early, with the first heat having constantly changing conditions. Those conditions improved throughout the day, which favored the classes in the later run groups.
Challenge Cup Event 3 of the 2025 Autocross Season took place on the smooth concrete at the Burleson High School parking lot on April 6. This was another cold and damp day! The smaller site still affords a very challenging course.
Everyone got six timed runs in both events. Full results can be found at http://Autocross.com
If you plan to attend the 69th Porsche Parade in Oklahoma City in July, we hope you’ll sign up for the Parade Autocross (July 9 and 10), or at least come out and watch, as Maverick Region members compete against PCA members from all around North America on the unique course at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. There are class categories for every Porsche ever built: Showroom Stock (no performance-enhancing modifications of any kind), Production (limited wheel/tire and suspension modifications allowed), Improved (engine, transmission, brake, bodywork, and other modifications allowed), and Modified (almost anything allowed as long as it began life as a Porsche and has a Porsche engine).
Next Equipe Rapide event: July 20, Lone Star Park, Grand Prairie
feaTure / Mavs & Mochas Recap
We had an unforgettable time with the Tub Club at Southlake Town Square! The weather was perfect, and the cars were even better. This year’s event brought together an excellent mix of vintage and modern Porsches that did not disappoint. Highlights of the Day
• Attendance: Around 140 cars, including 15 stunning Porsche 356 models.
• Porsche 356 Showcase: These nearly 70-year-old masterpieces looked as if they had just rolled off the showroom floor.
• Modern Marvels: Guests also admired contemporary icons like GT3s and a spectacular Gunther Werks 911 4.0L. It was a day of pure enjoyment, camaraderie, and shared passion for extraordinary automobiles.
Fun Facts: The Timeless Porsche 356
The Porsche 356 holds a special place in automotive history as Porsche’s very first production car. Here’s a closer look at the legacy of this iconic model:
• Porsche 356 (1948): The Type 356 No. 1 laid the foundation for Porsche’s 70+ years of crafting legendary sports cars.
• Porsche 356 A (1955): Introduced improved road handling with a modified chassis and engine upgrades from 1.5L to 1.6L.
• Porsche 356 B (1959): A major facelift gave these models higher bumpers and headlights, reflecting Porsche’s drive for innovation.
• Porsche 356 C (1963): The final iteration featured streamlined engine options, including the 130-hp 2000 GS Carrera 2. This series marked the end of 356 production in 1966.
• Convertible Variants: Cabriolet, Speedster, and Roadster options added open-top thrills to the lineup.
• The Carrera Legacy: From the 356 A onward, sporty variants that earned the "Carrera" designation were powered by the groundbreaking (in its time) Fuhrmann engine with four overhead camshafts and dual ignition systems.

If you have any changes that you would like to make to the MRPCA membership
This interview originally ran in the October 2020 issue of Slipstream.
So she never knew this, but I have read about this female legend and followed her through Slipstream since joining in 1996. Now as many of you know, I didn’t become active in the club until about 10 years ago. And even then we still had not met in person until about three years ago when we coordinated a 914 presentation at Zims Autotechnik. It was then I finally put a name to a face and a car. It’s only fitting that it worked out that we had a chance to sit down (via FaceTime) and chat, as this is our first of many October issues to come that we celebrate the women in our club.
I’ll give you the opportunity to do so as well, since over a thousand of you are new members since then. So, here is the next in my series of “conversations” . . .
Fran Ussery, Member since 1979
Present cars: 1973 914 and 2022 718 GTS
Bill Kruder: Let’s start off with the usual. Where are you from?
Fran Ussery: Well I’m a Dallasite through and through, born and raised in Lockwood, just northeast of White Rock Lake. I attended Bryan Adams High School in neighboring Casa View.
BK: And how about college?
FU: Didn’t stray too far from Dallas. I went to North Texas State (today UNT) with a degree in Secondary Education specializing in Biology and English.
BK: I didn’t know you were a teacher!
FU: Most don’t as that lasted all of a year; I quickly realized I was not cut out for that gig.
BK: So is that when you got in the print business?
FU: Not exactly. I went to work for a small ad agency that just happened to use a certain printer.
BK: Ahh and was this certain printer Ussery Printing?
FU: Yes sir it was and is today. It was Carl’s family business.
BK: So is this how you met Carl?
FU: It was. We were a client of theirs and so through business calls I knew his parents, brother, and knew who Carl was. One day I had to drive over to pick up some boxes and I needed some help loading them. I asked his mom if Carl could help and she told me “no, he was BUSY.” Well a few days later I get a call from Carl and he asked me out.
BK: How long ago was this?
FU: This would have been 1974; I think we went to Mother Blues, on Lemmon and Oak Lawn. It was a haunt of out-oftown musicians – great music.
BK: And how long did you date before getting married?
FU: We dated for about four years before getting married in 1978 in my mom and dad’s living room.
BK: And I understand you have two kids?
FU: We do - Erin was born in 1988; she lives in Canada and is an Environmental Scientist for the Canadian government. Adam was born in 1989, and he lives in Houston working for Clampitt Paper. It’s a Dallas-based paper company. Both kids grew up around Porsches and started to autocross as soon as they were “legal.”
BK: Let’s talk cars now. What was your first car?
FU: Well it was a hand-me-down from my mom: a 1961 Mercury Comet, something to get me through high school.
BK: Rumor has it before you got into Porsches you were a muscle car person? How come?
FU: True, my dad was a car guy – a Mopar guy. Dad loved big engines and fast cars like our 1957 Desoto Firedome! I remember peeking over the front seat back while mom was blissfully looking out the window and dad would be cruising at 100 in his 1961 Desoto (keep in mind seat belts were not standard issue yet).
BK: So after the Comet?
FU: Well my dad thought I needed a more dependable car to get me up to Denton and home on weekends so we bought an Avocado Green 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with a white vinyl top and 8-track! Freshman year was the Comet or a Schwinn 10-speed, but sophomore year was the ROADRUNNER – yes, that Roadrunner: 383 cu in (6.3L) 335 HP, 14.2 in a quarter-mile.
BK: So when did the Porsches happen?
FU: Carl introduced me to Porsche, and funny thing, he was from an American muscle car family. In 1973, he had read in the Wall Street Journal that the German Mark value was dropping, he drove directly to Forest Lane Porsche, trading his 1959 T-Bird for a new 914. We still have it today.
BK: Have there been others between the 1973 and the 2000s?
FU: There was. Back in 84-85, after an unfortunate “oops” in the 914, we bought a 1966 911 (production number 366) from Don Istook. He put in the rebuilt motor and fixed the rust. I think we paid just over $5K. Once we had the car home, that’s when the work began with the help of Stan Mancil painting it in his garage, Ed Mayo doing reassembly, Jerry Sutton helping with electrical, Alan Bambina refinishing the wood dash, and there were others – bribed with hamburgers!
BK: How long did you have it?
FU: We sold it about three years later but not before driving it up the 1984 Chicago Parade which was actually in Appleton, Wisconsin, about 3-1/2 hours north of Chicago. I think we travelled about 2,400 miles round trip and autocrossed at Road America, all in a car that had just been reassembled. Then in 1989 we bought a 1986 Guards Red Carrera Targa with a whaletail, and outfitted it with an authentic Porsche
baby seat. I mean what else do you buy when you have a little one (laughing)? We sold that in 1997-98 thinking we would buy two Harleys. Well I bought one but Carl never did - funny how that worked out!
BK: Now let’s talk about the club. By now most readers know you have been printing Slipstream since 1982 (see the ad in every issue) but you really got involved quickly with the club. FU: We did. We had our 914. Al Zim and Ed Mayo told us about the club and introduced us to Steve Kent. Well those who remember Steve know he could talk you into doing anything. Steve went on to be President in 1981 and got us to start attending events, and then helping with events. Then in 1984, following Joan Gibbs (first Maverick woman to be President in 1983), I become the second female president. Following that I became Editor for three years (1985-86-87). Then I followed in Charlie Davis’ footsteps and joined the national Parade Competition Rules committee (for 10 years).
BK: What would you say you are most proud of?
FU: I loved bringing more women and families into club activities. But from a long lasting standpoint – it would be publishing Slipstream for the club. We started printing it in 1982 and have watched it grow, improve, and become a winning newsletter. That’s a 43-year run, and at this year’s end we will have printed over 500 editions. We have always been so proud and thankful.

When Randy moved to Texas in 1983, several of his new friends owned Porsches. He was quickly converted, and in 1990, he bought his first Porsche, a 1986 Guards Red 951. Around that time, one of his car buddies made him an affiliate member of the PCA, which he later found out by accident when he saw that his join date was 1986. He wanted a Speed Yellow 997.2 manual coupe, but learned that it was nearly impossible to find this exact car, until he finally found one in North Carolina advertised on the nationalPCA website.
After buying the 997, he became much more active in the Maverick Region and has made many good friends. In February of this year, Randy became a
Co-Chair, and plans on taking many drives around Texas and other areas of the country. Please help us congratulate Randy as Most Valuable Maverick for June and July!

In the Dark Ages, car collectors and enthusiasts gathered in their garages. Some were modest, while at the other end of the spectrum were Taj-like edifices, whether an accessory building or an aircraft hangar. An exceptional collector may even have a museum.
Eventually, motorheads found a way to convene in large groups early on weekend mornings. There was a Cars and Coffee™ event held at the BMW dealer in Plano where any car was welcomed. About a decade ago, the Maverick Region organized the monthly Mavs & Mochas event, and now official and unofficial Club events now take place every Saturday and Sunday morning. The first Saturday of each month, Garages of America hosts Garages and Gearheads at its Carrollton location. Owners of the garages open their doors to attendees who can peruse those collections as well as the array of cars that show up that day. Porsches can be found on one row, Jaguars and British on another, Dodge Vipers gather in another location, and you’ll find assorted American muscle cars, the occasional Japanese Domestic Market product, and other unique cars.
Some of the garages are pristine collector showcases with cars that get exercised occasionally, while others are toolfilled workshops where owners get their hands dirty. One of my favorites is in the back row of the first phase of the Carrollton location. The owner has restored cars, bicycles, built toys, drones, and robots, and the facility has walls
lined with them, as well as unopened car models, toys, and Matchbox cars. While enjoying the monthly event, you may find a donut, breakfast taco, coffee, or mimosas being served, and lively conversations about any topic, car-related, travel, collecting passions, or even current events.
Garages of America has nine locations in the Metroplex and is building new phases at several locations. Other venues are online or in development. Maranello Luxury Auto Garages is scheduled to break ground in Plano this year, and Texas Collector Car Storage provides a welcoming space for its tenants and has hosted several Mavs & Mochas. Proof once again that “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”
This year's Bluebonnet tour was a success, with 90 cars weaving their way through Northern Ellis County's back roads. Starting from Red Oak, the group made its way to the Bluebonnet BBQ restaurant in Waxahachie. The bluebonnets were not blooming this year at our normal stopping point, but other areas of the tour had some plentiful flowers for all to see.

We ended the tour with a great lunch at the Bluebonnet BBQ restaurant, which accommodated our large group very nicely by blocking off about 70% of the restaurant for our club, filling their parking lot with many beautiful Porsche models. Their staff was extremely nice and is hoping to have us back again next year.
On Sunday, April 26, we held our most recent Mobile Mavs & Mochas in Wichita Falls. Due to massive rainfall on Saturday, the event was moved to Sunday, which allowed the participants to enjoy nearly perfect weather.
Gathering in a small park across from 8th Street Coffee, participants were treated to coffee and donuts as well as a commemorative window decal made by Wichita Falls member Chris Lowder. After everyone got acquainted, the donuts were consumed, and the urns of coffee drained, the group drove to P2 restaurant for lunch al fresco.
While the drive to the warehouse district where P2 is located was short, it was a colorful and sonorous parade of Porsches through downtown. Local residents enjoyed seeing the variety of models offered by our favorite brand, which glistened in the sun that emerged around noon. Although commonplace in the Metroplex, they are exotic there.
Conversations continued well after the burgers and steak sandwiches were finished. While some folks peeled off to get to afternoon activities, the talk turned to making plans for our next visit. After contact information was exchanged and goodbyes were said, the remaining group of Dallasites formed a convoy and returned under sunny skies and a route lined with wildflowers.

Porsche IMSA - Cruising towards a record season? In the IMSA world, it’s full speed ahead for Porsche. In the last issue of Slipstream, I reported that Porsche Penske Motorsport earned its second consecutive overall 24 Hours of Daytona win. Since then, being the first to see the checkered flag is starting to become the expectation, and not just Porsche Penske in the GTP class; customer teams in GTD are having just as much success. Penske’s 963s took the top two spots at Sebring, then, four weeks later, repeated the same results at Long Beach. At Sebring, Porsche placed first in the GTD Pro Class with the #77 AO Racing’s green “Rexy” 911 GT3R, and then went on to Long Beach to repeat the victory in GTD. While it is still early in the season, it’s not difficult to feel excited about Porsche’s domestic results within IMSA!
Porsche WEC – Challenges and struggles continue. It’s been a disappointing start for Porsche Penske, and their customer teams, in the World Endurance Championship series. As I last reported, in the Hypercar Class, Penske finished 10th and 11th, and Team Proton Competition 15th, at the first race of the season in the desert of Qatar. Porsche’s two LMGT3 cars finished a disappointing 12th and 13th in their class. On to the beautiful circuit in Imola, and challenges continued for Porsche’s Hypercars. The #6 Penske 963, behind Matt Campbell, Kevin Estre, and Laurens Vanthoor, was able to scratch an 8th place finish and tally four points towards the championship, while the #5 struggled into an 11th place finish. According to Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director Porsche Penske Motorsport, “Overall a disappointing day again; we didn’t have the pace to compete for the front. The #6 car did a good job on strategy there and led a few laps at the front of the race, but we didn’t have the pace to hold on towards the end. Really no mistakes on either car by any of the drivers, and a good job on pitlane by the pit crew.” Proton Competition’s 963 finished further down in the field in 14th position. All wasn’t lost though, as Team Manthey’s 911 GT3 R earned the top spot on the podium in the LMGT3 class behind drivers Ryan Hardwick, Richard Lietz, and Ricardo Pera. The teams will make their way onto the 6 Hours of SPA, the final round before the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As of the time of this writing, Porsche Penske is planning on fielding three 963s at Le Mans and, most likely, changing up the driver lineups/ pairings to optimize their chances towards achieving Porsche’s 20th overall Le Mans victory.
Formula E – The overlooked race series. I received a nice email from Maverick Region member Richard Cross suggesting I write an update on the exciting Formula E race series. Thank you Richard – I decided to take a peek into this fascinating world of motor car racing. As a backdrop, Formula E began in 2014 and continues to be a premier global racing series. It is now in their 11th racing season (16 global races from December 2024 to July 2025) running their 4th generation of cars called the Gen3 Evo. And these cars are FASSSST! How fast? According to www.fiaformulae.com, these machines can accelerate from 0-60mph in 1.82 seconds – that’s 30% faster than an F1 car. They are all-wheel drive, can achieve top speeds in excess of 200 mph, and are developed with and by several fully sustainable components and fabricated processes. There are currently 11 teams,
each running two cars, with one driver per car. Teams include TAG Heuer Porsche, Nissan, Jaguar TCS Racing, Mahindra Racing, NEOM McLaren, Maserati MSG Racing, Lola Yamaha, Envision Racing, DS Penske, Andretti Formula E Team, and CUPRA KIRO. Through round 7 of 16 races, Nissan stands in 1st place with 192 points, TAG Heuer Porsche 2nd with 163 points, and Jaguar TCS rounding out 3rd with 115 points. As of this writing, the series will travel to Tokyo, Shanghai, Jakarta, Berlin, and finish in London on July 27. If you want to take a deeper peek into this series, I highly recommend visiting www.fiaformulae.com - you won’t be disappointed.
