Pop-up Events

MISSING OUT ON POP-UP EVENTS? Over the past few months, I’ve seen a lot of comments saying “Oh, I missed this. I didn’t know about this event. How do I find out about these events?” Today, I am going to tell you how.

With a club as big as ours, there are lots of things going on, and sometimes it’s overwhelming to keep up with all the regularly scheduled events, much less the weekly Pop-Up events.

Here are some ways to keep up with club related events:

Here is a list of the Club-sponsored events you will find on the Calendar tab:

For those members that are not on social media, I suggest that you get out to some of the major club events and make some friends, exchange phone numbers, and get on some text groups.

Here are some of the regular pop-ups that are not on calendars but occur regularly.

FEATURE / Most Valuable Maverick

Lisa Ward Introducing the Most Valuable Maverick

Many of you know this month Most Valuable Mav as one half of the Dad Daughter duo of Greg and Lisa Ward.

Lisa started attending Maverick events about 5-7 years ago. I’m not sure there are many monthly Mavs & Mochas that she misses. Lisa has gone from attendee to volunteer to Chairperson.

Three years ago when we started up our Women Behind the Wheel group,

who other than Lisa volunteered, along with Pat Gouldy, to take charge.

For Breast Cancer Awareness month, who else but Lisa, with this year's lofty goal of raising $10K. Christmas cookie exchange you say? Yes Lisa, it’s you.

Please share with me in congratulating Lisa as our newest Most Valubable Maverick!

Summertime Activities Head in a New Direction

Cruising Down Memory Lane

I didn’t think about developing female friendships back in 2016 when I joined the PCA. Like many women members, I simply tagged along with the husband who bought the car.

As they say, one thing led to another . . . many others. Denny Payne helped Pat Talty and me become active in the club, Michael Durovick and I collaborated on the first October women’s issue in 2019, and Bill Kruder encouraged me to write female-focused articles for Slipstream on a regular basis.

Next came the formation of the Maverick Women Behind the Wheel in 2022 with Pat Gouldy’s inspiration, Wendy Shoffit’s experience, and Lisa Ward’s enthusiasm. And this year, we added the talents of Cyndi Banish, Angela James, and Pier Burgess to help plan a variety of events. We’ve enjoyed steady growth as we now have 293 MWBTW Facebook page members (as of this writing.) Our events have grown beyond the cars we love so much. In July, we dined and played putt-putt. In August, we experienced a French cooking class on a Sunday and then assembled early the following Saturday for a cover shoot and breakfast.

Golf Anyone?

Saturday, July 13, turned out to be a busy day for us. We met the minimum of nine persons to hold a private party at The Puttery at Grandscape in the Colony. Eleven women and three lucky husbands relaxed in a lounge area managed by an attentive server. We socialized first with chips, dips, and a variety of sips.

Margherita pizzas and a tray of fried spring rolls came next. Once full, our hostess escorted us to the front of the line in two groups of four and two groups of three. Positioned in the last group, I challenged the Gouldys to a little wager. The losing team needed to buy drinks for the winners at the nighttime Mavs & Mochas at Turbo Coffee. With the low-handicapper I married and our own putters, I felt confident we were up for the challenge.

Judging by all the laughs, I think every group had as much fun as the Taltys vs. the Gouldys on the nine-hole Lodge Course. We cheered holes-in-one and took light-hearted abuse for the maximum sixes a few of us scored. While I couldn’t get the feel for uphill putts on two holes, Pat Gouldy exploded with her hidden talent at mini golf. What can’t that woman do? The Gouldys won the high stakes match by three strokes, so let this be a warning to the rest of you!

Showing Off in the Kitchen

You may not know my favorite European country is France –J’adore every area I’ve visited, as well as the food and the language. Unable to sign up for the MWBTW Parisian Restaurant Favorites cooking class at the Southlake Sur la Table on August 18 due to a conflict nearly broke my heart. I persuaded my husband Pat to sit in for me with the promise I would arrive before the end of the class to photograph everyone and taste his creations. That worked out nicely!

Nineteen Mavericks (15 women and four men) gathered at 4:00 pm and broke into four groups around electric burners. After a knife-safety demonstration, Sur la Table’s Chef, Rich Fraser, put the participants to work creating a crust for a tomato and goat cheese tart. While the crust was in the oven pre-baking, the groups whisked together ingredients for a chocolate pot de crème dessert. Once in the oven, the group focused on the tart filling.

The two-hour class, which included dining time, moved quickly. Participants not only learned and prepared four recipes, but all gained valuable prep tips and scientific food facts as the class progressed. In addition to the dessert and tarte, groups rounded out the meal with pan-roasted chicken covered in a wine and herb sauce and grilled asparagus with a caper vinaigrette. I didn’t get my hands dirty, but instead snapped photos, sipped a lovely French wine, and helped Pat devour some of the deliciousness on his plate.

The Cover Ribbon

Twelve women rose early on Saturday, August 24, for this month’s cover photo shoot at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano. The photographer, Grayson McTaggart, found us assembling on the north end of the Dillard’s parking garage and suggested we move to the southwest side so he could have more height.

We completed our ribbon formation and photos just before the sun rose over the mall. Special thanks to all who showed up with only a week’s notice that had been sent on Facebook. We thank Grayson

for his patience and guidance, Cyndi Banish for the donuts and coffee, Jennifer Duman for layout assistance, Michael Hays who stopped by for a hat and ended up lending a hand, and Jackie Dove for driving the farthest to attend.

My online inquiry into the history of the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness revealed that a 68-year-old California activist hand made peach-colored ribbons to raise awareness about the lack of funding for cancer prevention research in the early 1990s. Two years later, a magazine editor utilized a pink ribbon and enlisted New York cosmetics companies to distribute them in NYC stores. Today, the pink ribbon is a universal symbol that represents unity and support for breast cancer awareness.

In other news...

Chris Cuyler stopped by The Puttery and Turbo Coffee to present logo earrings and magnets she created for the MWBTW. Find Wendy Shoffit at upcoming events to purchase yours for only $3.00 each.

We distributed pre-ordered summer t-shirts to ladies at our summer events. If you requested a “Life is too short to drive a boring car” shirt and haven’t picked it up, contact Wendy before they go away.

Upcoming events...

October 5 – Interior/Soft Top Care Session with Andy Kay at 3 p.m. 2137 Chelsea Blvd., Unit B-18, Allen.

October 12 – Bucket hat pick-up at NBCF Mavs & Mochas at the NBCF Headquarters in Frisco.

November 17 –Holiday flower arranging class from 1-3 p.m. at 2137 Chelsea Blvd., Unit B-18, Allen.

Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club – Our Autocross Connection

Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club’s Events 7 (July 21) and 8 (August 18) of the 2024 Autocross Season were back at our favorite local site, Lone Star Park. We rotate fresh course designers to create some challenging and exciting courses.

Event 7 was one more of the rainy, stormy, lightning-delayed events. After a few delays, everyone who stuck it out drove in some rapidly changing conditions. Event 8 was one of the usual August HOT and SUNNY events. We reduced runs to a total of five to get finished earlier and get participants out of the heat.

The last two events will again be at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie: September 22 and November 10. Event details can be found at http://www.autocross.com. Equipe Rapide is our Autocross Connection!

Coffee, Cars & Conversation: Jim Falgout

This month’s CC&C is a long time coming. Jim and I met for the first time back in 2015 when I joined the Maverick Board of Directors as the Advertising Chair at the time he was our Region President. As time would go on, I would see Jim at our monthly meetings at Hackberry Creek Country Club. It wasn’t until years later that I realized all that Jim had done for our club and thought it was time I shared his story.

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

Jim Falgout, member since 2008

Owner 2003 996, 2014 Cayman S, and 2021 Cayenne S

Bill Kruder: So, first things first. I have been misprouncing your name for nearly ten years. How do you say it?

Jim Falgout: Well, let’s just say you are not the first one to do that. My last name is French and we do not pronounce the “t,” so it’s “Fal-goo.”

BK: Since we are mixing things up, let’s start with this: what was your first car?

JF: That would have been a 1958 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer. It was 1964, and I was a senior in high school. I think I paid a whopping $250! That would be like $2,500 in today’s dollars.

BK: What was your first “sports” car and why?

JF: That would have been in college around 1967. It was a 1960 Austin-Healey 3000. Well, the “why a sports car” would be due to a college friend. He had an MG Midget, and he asked me to go pick up his girlfriend. Once getting the feel of his car I guess I was hooked.

BK: What was your first Porsche?

JF: That would not happen for another 14 years. In 1981, I bought a 1974 914 2-litre.

BK: Tell me about the 2003 996. I understand it’s special.

JF: It is, but was not as much when I bought it. I purchased it in 2013. We have had it for 11 years now. I say “we” as it’s the car I had when I first dated Kay in 2018. Of all the cars I have previously or currently owned, this one means a lot to us both. I think it’s the one that Kay would not let me sell.

BK: Since you bring up Kay, how did you two meet?

JF: That was back in 2017. Sadly, Kay’s husband had passed away, and she approached me as a potential client to have her taxes completed. At that time, unbeknownst to Kay, I was in the process of a divorce. Fast forward to 2018 - May 8th to be exact - I called her for a date. First thing she asked was, “Are you married?” Well, I was on May 7th, but I was not on the 8th (smiling). So, on the 11th we finally went out on our first date. After a few dates, I was on my way out of town for about 7-10 days, and sure enough she texted me to say, “Have a safe and good trip.” Every night for the entire trip, we exchanged texts for hours. I knew she was special. It was like - and still is - we think alike. She can tell what I’m thinking. Fast forward again, and we married on May 23, 2020.

BK: Tell me about college.

JF: I went to University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, which was voted number one “party” school by Playboy magazine in 1964. I was uncertain about what I wanted to be; my dad wanted me to be a doctor like him (smiling). I switched majors three times: pre-med, pharmacy, then on to pre-law. I finally settled on law only to find out the school didn’t really have the degree I was pursuing, so I received a degree in history.

Jim and his Cayman

BK: But your career went a different route?

JF: The story goes on. Viet Nam was raging when I graduated, and that meant The Draft. Well, as long as I was in school, I was ok. However, I was graduating when my number was pulled. So, after some consideration I decided I would join the Coast Guard. With my degree I would be entering as an officer, an Ensign.

BK: So, you were an officer in the Coast Guard?

JF: Hold on - it gets better. So, I accepted the offer, and decided to drive my VW Beetle up to Newport News, Virginia. I got in a car crash on the way destroying my car and nearly me. I was severely injured with very little mobility in my left shoulder. So long answer short, I received a medical discharge.

BK: I know you went on to be an accountant . . .

JF: That I did. I went on to attend LSU to get my MBA with a concentration in accounting and became a CPA.

BK: Great segue in to your time as a Maverick. You joined in 2008 and quickly became a member of not only our board, but on the Executive team.

JF: It’s true. When I joined in 2008, the region had just lost its Treasurer. Well, I was new, but heck, I was a CPA. So, I said I could help out, but no one really knew me. As luck had it, former Region President Bob Knight was the PCA National Finance Chair, and Bob and I had been with the same firm back in the ‘70s. Apparently, Bob assured our board that I was “ok”. That was 2009, and I held the role for six years..

BK: But that’s only the beginning, right?

JF: You could say so. I was the Treasurer for six years. I followed that up in 2015 with two years as President. Then, in 2017 I took on the role of VP for two years.

BK: And you are not finished?

JF: No, I just recently sold my CPA practice and now have more time to spend with the club. Hearing the news that Chris Flaugh was stepping down midterm, I offered to act as the interim Treasurer. Then, if the membership will have me, I would very much like to be elected for the 2025 term.

BK: Ok, we have to finish up with what I usually start with: where are you from?

JF: I was hoping we could avoid that (laughing). Sometimes, I just tell people I grew up in a ‘47 Plymouth (smiling). My dad was a doctor, and we moved a lot, as he always had the urge to move and start again. But, I was born in Kinston, North Carolina. Raleigh is about 90 minutes northwest. And from there, we moved several times, and were in Kaplan, Louisiana, when I finished high school. I went to Dallas in 1975 for my first CPA job and was determined to stay in one area. I am very happy that I did.

Thank you, Jim, for “Driving Friendships” since 2008 and for all of your service to the Maverick Region. I fully endorse you joining the Maverick Region as the 2025 Treasurer and it would be a privilege to serve alongside you on the MRPCA Executive Board.

Porsche Dallas Classic Restoration Program

The D/FW Metroplex is fortunate to have many great independent shops that can work on older cars, especially air-cooled models. If you want to go to a single shop to overhaul your car completely, some Porsche dealerships offer those services. From the smallest genuine Porsche parts inside your engine to paint, the Porsche Classic Restoration Program is offered by two area dealerships. On July 27, Porsche Dallas hosted a presentation to unveil its upcoming entrant in the competition among other Porsche Classic Restoration Programs that will be taking place in August 2025. The competition includes Preservation, Restoration, and Individualization. This is a highly competitive event – over 50 dealerships participated in 2023 – that confers a great deal of prestige to the winners and other awardees. The 2024 event will take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on October 4.

General Manager Patrick Huston started the presentation by giving an overview of the Porsche Classic Restoration Program and the services that are provided. Parts Director Randall Johnson and Shop Foreman Austin Veca presented the car and described the work that lays ahead. Lead Technician Jade Degurechaff answered technical questions about the parts that were on display as well as techniques to restore the car.

What started as a 1988 narrow-body Carrera 911 Cabriolet was modified by a past owner into a Flachblau wide-body car, which was very cool in that era. When its current owner took delivery, he brought the car to Porsche Dallas to fix a few things. As technicians began their work on the car, the owner decided to dive into a complete nut-and-bolt restoration while including updated modern electronics and technology, such as Porsche Classic Communication Management with Wifi. The engine’s performance will be upgraded to increase power from 300 to 420 hp with an enhanced intercooler for the turbocharged engine, in addition to enhancing the suspension and brakes. The body will be revised also, correcting the original modification in which the wide-body fenders were added. Porsche parts will replace others that were installed in the lighting system; LED headlights will be used. Multi-stage paintwork will replace the single stage that was the standard when the car was built. Porsche manufactures parts for cars 25 years or older as part of its Classic Program, and some parts can be 3D printed if they are not available.

In the period in which the car was built, it took over 120 hours to complete a car. This work will take many multiples of that, but the finished product will be far superior to the car when it left the factory and when it was modified originally.

A Tale of the Tail

Drachenfest, not Drunkenfest, is a Wilderness Trail Region (PCA) event held in early August in Northeast Georgia. “Drache” is German for “dragon,” as in Tail of the Dragon. I know many of you have been on this amazing road, but for me, it was the first of many roads I have wanted to drive in my Porsche. Both the road and the weekend did not disappoint. This year there were 86 Porsches and over 100 people who signed up for this long weekend, and we came from all over the United States. The cost to register was under $50, since no meals or additional events were covered as part of their registration fee. Although we shared many meals together, it was up to us to pay for our own meals, which was a good thing because we had to change our lunch plans two days due to unforeseen circumstances. The group would gather in the evenings for drinks and go to dinner with friends they had made during the drives.

When the Maverick Region publicized this event, I was immediately attracted to it for two reasons: 1) the Tail of the Dragon; and 2) I have family living less than an hour from the Brasstown Resort, which is located in Young Harris, Georgia, and served as our home base for the weekend. Later, I realized I should have looked a little more closely into what the weekend entailed. My husband, David, and I had no problem with the 14-hour drive, since we had agreed to take two days to get there. (We had just driven to the Porsche Parade earlier this summer in Birmingham, Alabama.) Located in Young Harris, Drachenfest is so close to Tennessee and North Carolina that you can be in either state in less than 30 minutes. As I looked closer at the details, the drives lasted ALL DAY on beautiful, mountainous, tree-lined roads that traveled alongside streams and lakes. Guard rails seemed optional.

I am used to our half day tours – start early in the morning, have lunch, and find your own way home. We literally rose before 7:00 a.m. to attend 8:00 a.m. driver meetings. We exited the

parking lot at 8:15 a.m. and didn’t arrive back at the resort until after 4:30 p.m. (or, like us, around 5:30 p.m. for the first all-day drive.) I was mentally and physically exhausted, but the drives were exhilarating! It's hard to describe the joy (and serious fear) experienced on those roads. I still recall the blind curves, sweeping hairpin curves, and the ascents and descents in the mountains. I have to say the Wilderness Trail Region knows their stuff, and their President Leo Anderson is a talented and very organized man. Every road challenged me. You should ask the other 13 other Mavericks who attended how they felt.

I learned how important it is to keep your car between the “mustard and the mayo.” It was emphasized that we were responsible for our own actions. We saw the result of a “local” who did not keep his large vehicle on the correct side of the mustard. Luckily, all the people were okay; their cars, not so much. Another challenge was the large group of Miata drivers gathering there that same weekend. More than 1,000 fearless Mazda drivers occupied the roads right there with us.

What did I gain from this weekend? My car earned another 3,000 miles, my technical driving skills improved, and I feel more confident in myself and in my Porsche. I would not hesitate to recommend this drive to any of you. Get out and drive your Porsche like you're supposed to. Don't wait for anything or anybody to tell you to get out there. Just do it!

National Breast Cancer Foundation Partnership

In the spring of 1992, I was a newly-commissioned student driver in Houston, TX. We had a Geo Metro with 49 horsepower that I was allowed to learn with as I conquered the dreaded I-10. I remember the day that my dad told me they were looking for a different second car for the family. Bye, Geo Metro! I didn't care what it was, I just knew that it had to have better performance than the weedeater-motor-on-wheels.

My dad started looking at the Classifieds (remember those?) and quickly landed on something that piqued his curiosity. I heard him furtively whispering to my mom and saw a bit of "convincing" happening, before he snuck off into the other room to get on the phone. I wanted to know so badly what the secret was, but I couldn't pry it out of my mom. A few moments later, my dad emerged with an uncontainable grin and nodded at my mom.

"What is going on, Dad?!?" I asked.

"Well, I don't want you to get your hopes up, but there's a dealer near here who has a 1986 Porsche 944, and we're going to go look at it."

This was the first moment where I truly learned what the word HOPE meant. During the whole 24-hour ordeal where my dad was haggling, I never lost hope that the deal was going to get done. I could just see the future - riding around with my brother like kings in our champagne-colored P-car. We indeed bought the car, and it was everything I dreamed it would be!

Hope is a curious thing. Sometimes it's for a better future, and sometimes it's just to have a future at all. Our mission at National Breast Cancer Foundation is Helping Women Now. We provide help for today and inspire hope for tomorrow. Since 1991, we have been providing services to help women and families facing breast cancer. One of our initiatives, Guys for Good (website to include: www.nationalbreastcancer.org/guys-for-good/), was created to give men support and access to resources. When someone from our tribe is diagnosed with breast cancer, WE are diagnosed with breast cancer. Men feel that emotional pain and burden and need hope, just as much as their spouses who are undergoing treatment.

Since 2019, NBCF has proudly partnered with the Maverick Region of PCA to engage men and women in the fight against breast cancer. As a fellow member of the club, now in a 997.1, I am proud to combine our love for Porsches with the purpose of supporting this cause. If you find someone needing support as they face breast cancer, please contact us, so that you too can have help today and hope for tomorrow!

What's

IN THE GARAGE

Ajai Cadambi, M.D. has always been a German car guy. Like so many of our favorite machines, Ajai was born in Stuttgart, where his father was working as an engineer for Daimler-Benz. It was only natural that they would become his passion. After moving several more times, Ajai’s father’s career took the family to Wichita Falls, and the long list of cars Ajai owned began. Naturally, his first car was German, and an interesting choice: a Squareback VW. Supporting his habit while in high school and college, Ajai learned to wrench on his cars – first the VW, then a Triumph Spitfire.

During medical school, his choices became more practical since he had limited time for other pursuits. A series of practical Toyotas and Hondas provided safe transport. As a young doctor, his started to pursue his passion. Like many starting in the hobby, the sex appeal of a Jaguar XKE was irresistible, and several collector quality roadsters and coupes went through his garage. The American muscle car itch was also scratched – a ’67 Corvette was followed by a ’69, and then several Trans Am models. With a growing medical practice, he sought the assistance of professional mechanics and restorers, helping to sort through his collection.

As Ajai’s collection evolved, his philosophy of car ownership evolved with his tastes, but is now firmly in place: buy great cars, then drive and enjoy them. Their value is only important for the purpose of having sufficient insurance coverage. As a result, four Ferraris and a Lamborghini came and went because other owners enjoyed showing them off like jewelry and talking about the investment rather than driving them. If you participate in Driver Education

Uncle Albert
View through Ford GT engine lid

events, or are a member of MotorSport Ranch (conveniently just minutes from his house and garages), you have seen Ajai barraging in various cars that he has owned - a Python Green GT3RS, a Spec Miata race car wrapped to resemble a fighter airplane, and now “The Eggplant,” a Viola Metallic GT4RS.

Taking laps at the track also takes place at home. After the passing of his father, Ajai worked through his grief while building a slot car track that is a replica of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which fits perfectly in a bay of his garage. It is decorated to match the ‘60s and ‘70s period cars he loves, although there are some modern slot car models in his paddock. You may recall seeing Ajai drive some of these cars to local events and meet-ups. Many of these cars took top honor at national and regional Concours. Trophies, pictures, models, and other ephemera line the walls and take their place of honor on top of the tool chests and cabinets in his garage. There are framed articles and other memorabilia from the themed charity events and parties he hosted in his garage, including an Elvis-themed event (I wondered if he sang “Don’t You Step On My Blue Suede Driving Shoes”).

Uncle Albert is the name given to his early 911, an immaculate 1970 911E with mechanical fuel injection. It gets the honor of being delivered to the Hill Country Rally in a trailer, so there’s a Dually F-350 in a garage bay that wears a bumper sticker reading “I’d rather be driving a GT40.” A 2005 Ford GT flanks the other

side of the pickup, wearing Shelby livery of white with blue stripes. Ajai has driven that car on numerous long distance trips because it is so easy to drive at speed for long stints. This has allowed it to earn window decals from the many tracks it has “visited.” Looking through the bedecked window, one sees another amazing car – a Blossom Yellow 964 Turbo 3.6, and next to it is one of the four cars that Ajai said will never be sold: a 2011 GT3 RS 4.0. The other three cars that he won’t part with are the afore-mentioned Ford GT, Lexus LFA (remarkable sounds come from its mid-engine V10, which was owned by Larry Ellison), and a Carrera GT. He purchased the Guards Red CGT after he realized how much he missed the Fayence Yellow one he formerly owned.

Among the cars are evidence of several other pursuits – a golf simulator, two beautiful vintage BMW motorcycles with sidecars, and numerous bicycles. The orange Confente Criterium bike with a Campagnolo Super Record gruppo caught my eye (IYKYK), along with a gorgeous Colnago, and a mountain bike by my favorite modern maker, Moots. Ajai completed the Triple Bypass ride this summer, which is a huge achievement – look it up!

If you haven’t met Ajai yet, he is very approachable and easy to talk to. Like the best collectors, he loves to share his cars, knowledge, and experience. And, like the others I have profiled, I appreciate the time he gave to me, and I feel we are fortunate to have them as members of our club.

Can My “Driver-Quality” Porsche Win the Maverick Concours?

Editor’s Note: We ran out of room in the previous issue, so we belatedly present these Concours hints and tips . . .

Once a year, our region hosts a big car show competition at the picturesque grounds of Silver Lake Marina in Grapevine, known as the Maverick Concours. Entrants are separated into different classes and judged. Best of Show, Best in Class, and President’s Choice trophies are awarded. Some spectacular and rare Porsches are typically represented. Under this backdrop, does my driverquality Porsche stand a chance?

“One of Wen,” as it’s affectionately known, is a 2011 Turbo S Cabriolet. I acquired it eight years ago from the original owner. It’s a gorgeous 911 with several unique features. But, it is a driverquality car with over 62,000 miles. From Cars & Coffee, annual road trips, to occasional track days, “One of Wen” has done them all. While it has always been well taken care of, it’s not perfect.

With any competition, understanding the rules is of foremost importance. Maverick Concours is a “top-only,” or street, Concours. The entire visible surface of the vehicle is judged. “Points are deducted from a maximum possible value based on condition and cleanliness” per the guidelines. A team of five judges scores the following: Exterior and Paint (40 pts), Interior (25 pts), Engine (25

pts), and General Presentation (10 pts). It’s a misconception that only the rare, unique, or expensive cars can win the Concours. The fact is that the cleanest and the best presented cars win Concours. Every car starts with 100 points. Avoid deductions, and you win. The highest scoring car wins its class. Then, Best of Show is selected from the Class winners.

All entrants will have done a great job washing, waxing, and cleaning. To stand out, you need to pay attention to the little details. A point, or even a half point deduction, separates the competitive field in your class. Below are some areas to focus on to help you come out on top:

• Presentation (10 pts): This is the most impactful segment! It’s a car show. Let’s get a poster board made! Highlight interesting facts about your beloved Porsche. Show off the original documentation (window sticker, owner's manual, and sales brochures), original tool kits, maintenance record binders, and even previous awards. Most people don’t bother with Presentation and miss out on points.

• Engine (25 pts): Another segment where many people lose points is the Engine. No need to go crazy here, but all easily reachable/ visible areas should be wiped down. Use detailer and/or plastic restorer spray (such as Meguiar’s Ultimate Black) to refresh the

look of the engine bay. At a minimum, it should look like you “tried” to clean it when you are done.

• Exterior (40 pts): All the Porsches in the Concours look great. So, judges are looking for the smallest details to separate the field. Be sure to clean the door jambs, hinges, and exhaust pipes. Remove debris in air duct and radiator openings. Check the rubber condition of the wipers. Apply tire dressing and orient Porsche crest on the center caps to the correct position. For rock chips or small blemishes, judges want to see that they have been touched-up or addressed. Older class or high mileage cars are typically judged less critically than the modern class or low mileage cars.

• Interior (25 pts): On the Interior front, do your best to remove all dust and wipe down windows. Use Q-Tips for hard-to-reach areas, such as air vent slats and seat rails. Don’t forget to apply leather conditioner and plastic restorer to really make the interior pop.

Judging is also highly subjective. The group of judges is allowed to spend just five minutes to score your car. Think of unique ways to highlight the best attributes of your Porsche. You are the x-factor. From the car’s provenance to your personal affinity with the brand, we all love a good story. Keep in mind you may be judged along with your car. Be present and share your enthusiasm.

So, back to the original question: can my driver-quality Porsche win the Maverick Concours? As it turned out, it can! On May 19, 2024, “One of Wen” was honored with the Best of Show award. It was the top Porsche on that day, besting collector-grade 356s, GTs, Spyders, and many uber-rare/color/spec/low mileage dream cars. I have no illusion that “One of Wen” is a perfect car that would score well at Amelia Island or Pebble Beach, because it isn’t. But

with a little elbow grease and proper presentation, a driver-quality Porsche can walk away a winner in our club’s Concours.

Now that I have demystified Maverick Concours d'Elegance, I hope to see more of you taking part in future Concours events.
