Marshfield Area United Way works year-round to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Everyone deserves opportunities to achieve a quality education that leads to a stable job, family-sustaining income through all of life’s stages, good health and a safe home. That’s why United Way focuses on the building blocks of a good life: education, income and health.

United Way recruits people and organizations who bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. We work with a diverse group of partners, companies and individuals from all walks of life to identify needs, create a strategic response and work towards solutions.

Marshfield Area United Way’s mission is to increase our community’s capacity to care for one another.

We do that by acting as a leading organization bringing our community together to prioritize and address human service needs by building partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to achieve a measurable, sustained, positive outcome.

Over the years, I have had the true pleasure of being able to work with the Marshfield Area United Way on a volunteer basis. From my first day of serving on a committee to now serving on the board I continue to see not only how great the needs are in our community but how beautifully our community steps in to meet those needs. 2017 was no different! I would like to take a moment to recognize all who have helped make it possible for the United Way to make a difference again this year.

Jason and Kim Angell, along with their children Parker and Addison, graciously accepted the challenge of becoming the drive chairs for our 2017 campaign. When asked to take the challenge they did not even hesitate. You are so appreciated for finding time in your already busy lives to make helping your community a priority! Thank You! Thank you to the United Way staff who work tirelessly to make sure that every person who walks thru their door or calls for help receives the care and guidance that they need. It is truly amazing to me just how many lives they touch in a day.

Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers in our community who so generously give of their time and talent to help touch someone’s life. Our goals could not be met without the countless hours donated, whether it be serving on a committee, filling backpacks for our community’s children or spending your lunch hour making sandwiches for the NOW program.

And finally, a very big thank you to all of you, our wonderful community members for every dollar that you donate. It is with your very generous act of giving that the Marshfield Area United Way is able to change so many lives in our community.

Reflecting back on our time with the United Way family, has given us memories and an experience that will be treasured forever. To get a glimpse of what past campaign chairs, hundreds of volunteers and the AMAZING work of Paula and Ashley, helped grow, has been a great honor and gave our family a new perspective on what it means to give. Marshfield was our home for more than nine years, but this last year brought forth new purpose, new friendships, and new beginnings. To dare great, and step outside our comfort zone, opened our eyes to the needs of others, that far exceed our own. It goes to show that small steps of kindness, are contagious and make a difference. To see what Marshfield can do for its community is humbling and you should all be proud of who your neighbors are. We can’t thank you enough, for your generosities and willingness to give, year after year. It was a heartfelt privilege to be part of the United Way campaign. It’s given our family a special energy to continue similar volunteering in our new community. Stepping away from Marshfield was bittersweet. We loved our time there, and being part of United Way was icing on the cake. We will forever hold a special place in our hearts for all of you. Thank you, and all the best.

In February of 2017, Simplicity Credit Union hosted Wine Cheese & Grub at the Oven Above the Pub to support the Nutrition On Weekends program.

Marshfield Area United Way received a $3000 grant from the Green Bay Packer Foundation for the Nutrition On Weekends program.

After 25 years of service to Marshfield Area United Way, Jeanne Denk retired from her position as Administrative Assistant.

Jason, Kim, Parker and Addie Angell were the second family to lead the annual fall campaign.

Schalow’s Nursery hosted a couple of Patio Nights benefitting United Way programs. One night was to support the Backpack and School Supply Drive and one night was to support the Nutrition On Weekends program.

UNITED WAY EDUCATION INITIATIVES CRADLE TO CAREER SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS School Readiness

675 children from nine area school districts received backpacks and school supplies through the annual backpack and school supply drive. Students from Auburndale, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marshfield, Neillsville, Pittsville, Spencer and Stratford schools received all the supplies needed to be ready to learn in the upcoming school year.

Impact at least 6000 children in our service area through support of early childhood literacy, early childhood education, and other school readiness initiatives

Support programs that successfully obtain and sustain student academic success for at least 1000 students in the Marshfield Area United Way service area.

Parental Support and Skill Enhancement

Increase both the availability and level of parent participation in parental support and skill enhancement programs by 20%.

2017: 241 parents, +27.5% from 2014 (baseline)

Increase number of Mentors, Tutors and Readers

Increase the number of tutors, readers, and mentors engaged with children and youth by 20%, in the Marshfield Area United Way service area.

2017: 298 individuals , -18% from 2014 (baseline)

5183 children received a book during their well-baby/child exam through the Reach Out and Read program. Along with given a book, parents also learned about the importance of reading to their child in the early years of his/her life. The Reach Out and Read program is done in partnership with the Marshfield Clinic.

Pathway Partners Spencer Kids Group Youth Net

Our work in action: Mark and Josiah have been matched for over one year. Recently, Josiah’s mother told us that her son has really opened up to his Big Brother, Mark. Every week Mark and Josiah are doing something to peak Josiah’s interest, including building an experiment to show how human lungs work. Josiah is so proud of it he brings out to show any guest that visits their house.

Every week, Mark and Josiah end their time together with a great big hug and a, "Thank you!" from Josiah. Mom states that this match has made a huge difference in her son's confidence and self-expression. One that she is not sure would have happened without Big Brothers Big Sisters.

UNITED WAY FINANCIAL STABILITY INITIATIVES 724 senior citizens and low- to moderate-income individuals received free tax preparation assistance through the AARP Tax Aide program. The tax preparation assistance program helps low to moderate income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing.

FINANCIAL STABILITY AND INDEPENDENCE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES SERVED BY MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY Income Supports

Provide services, goods and income supports that augment household budgets for at least 3000 individuals in the Marshfield Area United Way service area.

2017: 2797 individuals

Affordable Housing

Provide transitional shelter with supportive services to at least 200 homeless individuals.

2017: 64 individuals

Manageable Expenses

Establish a financial literacy program capable of providing quality budgeting and other financial literacy services to a minimum of 100 individuals its first year of operation.

165 individuals received assistance with accessibility and cost of laundry services through the Loads of Love program. Loads of Love is a United Way initiative that provides financially struggling families the ability to do their laundry on a more regular basis by assisting them with the cost and accessibility to laundry machines.

$2,809 was saved in prescription costs for Marshfield area residents using the Familywize prescription drug discount card in 2017.

Our work in action: After 17 years of service to the business she was working for, Sue was told the building had been sold. She was suddenly homeless and without a job. Sue didn't know where to turn until she heard about Mary's Place. She promptly went to Mary's Place and was taken in. From there, Lanny, the Director of Mary's Place, guided Sue and referred her to various resources available to her in the community.

Sue quickly found a couple of part-time jobs and is making progress toward becoming self-sufficient once again. "If it wasn't for Mary's Place and Lanny I don't think I could have made it," said Sue.

UNITED WAY HEALTH INITIATIVES SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES Safe Home and Community 475 children facing food insecurities in his/her home received supplemental food packs through the Nutrition On Weekends program. The program currently serves students in the Marshfield, Loyal, Granton, Greenwood, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Auburndale School districts.

79 sports scholarships were awarded to children through the Right 2 Play 4 All program.

Right 2 Play 4 All is a program of the Marshfield Area United Way and is committed to promoting a healthier and safer lifestyle for children in the Marshfield Area through the power of sports.

32 Marshfield residents received help with raking their yard this past October in celebration of National Make A Difference Day.

Our work in action: Upon engaging in therapy, Gary shared that he had "no energy" and it had been this way for about a year. He also mentioned having anxiety, mainly saying he had "worried thoughts", which also began about a year ago. He specified depression as a problem and relayed that he does not sleep well, getting about "3-4 hours per night". He said this has been this way for the past two years, but mainly "this past summer". He introduced that he has been "hearing negative voices" over the last 6 months. When asked what the voices said he replied, "You’re not good enough." Gary admitted to suicidal ideation.

Over the last few years, Gary had not seen his father much, nor regularly. Gary’s mother shared that he might see his father about once every two months. Gary shared that his father wasn't involved in his life unless he was doing something or achieving something. This was an issue for Gary and it was possible that quitting sports and grades dropping were Gary's response to his father's absence. Ultimately, the stress on Gary from not feeling good enough caused anxiety, which then eroded his energy to the point of depression.

After approximately four months of therapy, Gary was able to understand his relationship with his father and determine he is not able to control his father’s actions, thereby letting go of the negative messages he felt from father’s lack of involvement in his life. Gary began to improve his grades and his mood and anxieties are much better.
