Marshfield Area United Way works year-round to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Everyone deserves opportunities to achieve a quality education that leads to a stable job, family-sustaining income through all of life’s stages, good health and a safe home. That’s why United Way focuses on the building blocks of a good life: education, income and health. United Way recruits people and organizations who bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. We work with a diverse group of partners, companies and individuals from all walks of life to identify needs, create a strategic response and work towards solutions.

We do that by acting as a leading organization bringing our community together to prioritize and address human service needs by building partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to achieve a measurable, sustained, positive outcome.
“What is your hope?”—I was going to begin by listing all the wonderful things United Way does for our community, but more important, all the wonderful things the community does for United Way. However, I only have so much space and found out quickly I wasn’t going to make it! It was a privilege for me to be part of this amazing board & staff of United Way for the past six years. I hate to admit that although I had been a supporter of United Way long before that time, I never really knew a lot about the services they provide. The hours and enthusiasm the staff has is truly amazing and matches up well with the support of this generous community. At the start of each board meeting, one of the staff delivers a “mission moment” and tells of something that happened during the month where United Way was called on to help. It was my favorite part of the meetings, knowing that your dollars are going to work in the community. The stories are sad, but the outcomes and help provided by United Way warms the heart. The board and staff were thrilled when the Holm family agreed to be drive chairs for the 2016 campaign. From the beginning, they took up this challenge and began their campaign strategies. Congratulations, Jay, Jill, McKenzie, Max and Madden on a successful campaign. We are so thankful for your family and the lives you touched during this campaign and continue to do so. So – what is your hope? I’m sure answers vary, but at least we know where to turn when we have lost our hope: Marshfield Area United Way. CRADLE TO CAREER SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS SCHOOL READINESS IMPACT AT LEAST 6000 CHILDREN IN OUR SERVICE AREA THROUGH SUPPORT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, AND OTHER SCHOOL READINESS INITIATIVES. • 2016: 5024 CHILDREN SCHOOL SUCCESS SUPPORT PROGRAMS THAT SUCCESSFULLY OBTAIN AND SUSTAIN STUDENT ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR AT LEAST 1000 STUDENTS IN THE MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY SERVICE AREA. • 2016: 972 STUDENTS PARENTAL SUPPORT AND SKILL ENHANCEMENT INCREASE BOTH THE AVAILABILITY AND LEVEL OF PARENT PARTICIPATION IN PARENTAL SUPPORT AND SKILL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMS BY 20%. • 2016: 232 PARENTS, +23% FROM 2014 (BASELINE) INCREASE NUMBER OF MENTORS, TUTORS AND READERS INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TUTORS, READERS, AND MENTORS ENGAGED WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH BY 20%, IN THE MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY SERVICE AREA. • 2016: 245 INDIVIDUALS , -33% FROM 2014 (BASELINE)
5024 children received a book during their well-baby/child exam through the Reach Out and Read program. Along with given a book, parents also learned about the importance of reading to their child in the early years of his/her life. The Reach Out and Read program is done in partnership with the Marshfield Clinic.
638 children from nine area school districts received backpacks and school supplies through the annual backpack and school supply drive. Students from Auburndale, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marshfield, Neillsville, Pittsville, Spencer and Stratford schools received all the supplies needed to be ready to learn in the upcoming school year.

FINANCIAL STABILITY AND INDEPENDENCE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES SERVED BY MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY INCOME SUPPORTS PROVIDE SERVICES, GOODS AND INCOME SUPPORTS THAT AUGMENT HOUSEHOLD BUDGETS FOR AT LEAST 3000 INDIVIDUALS IN THE MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY SERVICE AREA. • 2016: 2974 INDIVIDUALS AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROVIDE TRANSITIONAL SHELTER WITH SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO AT LEAST 200 HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS. • 2016: 195 INDIVIDUALS MANAGEABLE EXPENSES ESTABLISH A FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM CAPABLE OF PROVIDING QUALITY BUDGETING AND OTHER FINANCIAL LITERACY SERVICES TO A MINIMUM OF 100 INDIVIDUALS ITS FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION.
815 senior citizens and low- to moderate-income individuals received free tax preparation assistance through the AARP Tax Aide program. The tax preparation assistance program helps low to moderate income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing. 132 individuals received assistance with accessibility and cost of laundry services through the Loads of Love program. Loads of Love is a United Way initiative that provides financially struggling families the ability to do their laundry on a more regular basis by assisting them with the cost and accessibility to laundry machines.
$4,029 was saved in prescription costs for Marshfield area residents using the Familywize prescription drug discount card in 2016. United Way has partnered with Familywize for years to help people nationwide save money on prescriptions. Familywize works to make medicines more affordable by providing free prescription discount cards. Since its beginning in 2009, Familywize cards have helped 2170 individuals in our community save more than $218,659.
SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES SAFE HOME AND COMMUNITY PROVIDE SERVICES AND SUPPORTS THAT KEEP A MINIMUM OF 500 INDIVIDUALS SAFE. • 2016: 719 INDIVIDUALS ACCESS TO SUPPORTIVE HEALTH SERVICES PROVIDE SERVICES AND SUPPORTS THAT MAINTAIN OR INCREASE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING FOR AT LEAST 100 INDIVIDUALS. • 2016: 1379 INDIVIDUALS
417 children facing food insecurities in his/her home received supplemental food packs through the Nutrition On Weekends program. The program currently serves students in the Marshfield, Loyal, Granton, Greenwood, Spencer and Auburndale School districts. 48 sports scholarships were awarded to children in 2016 through the Right 2 Play 4 All program. Right 2 Play 4 All is a program of the Marshfield Area United Way and is committed to promoting a healthier and safer lifestyle for children in the Marshfield Area through the power of sports.
38 Marshfield residents received help with raking their yard this past October in celebration of Make A Difference Day. Approximately 200 volunteers raked leaves for residents whom are still able to live independently but aren’t physically able to care for their lawns themselves.

GIVE & WIN SWEEPSTAKES WINNERS 2016 was the second year Marshfield Area United Way was able to offer the Give & Win Sweepstakes as an incentive for the Fall fundraising campaign. Thanks to the generous sponsorships from Changes Within, Riveredge, Simplicity Credit Union, Thornton Truck & Equipment and V&H Trucks, Inc. there were five $1000 cash prizes donors could qualify to win. Two ways donors qualified for the sweepstakes prizes were as follows: individuals giving $52 received 50 chances to win and individuals who gave at least $52 in 2015 and increased their 2016 gift by a minimum of $1 received 100 chances to win. Volunteers play a vital role in Marshfield Area United Way’s work in the community. United Way would not be able to accomplish all that we do throughout the year without the generosity and dedication of more than 1000 volunteers that help in many different capacities. There were a lot of “firsts” for Marshfield Area United Way in 2016. In May, Marshfield Area United Way held its first-ever Downtown Wine Walk. The event was a Leadership Marshfield project which was worked on collaboratively with United Way and Main Street Marshfield. 140 participants enjoyed wine sampling, shopping, and dining in numerous downtown businesses. The event raised nearly $3000 for United Way.
The Holm Family was the first family to lead the Fall fundraising campaign for United Way. Jay and Hill Holm, and their three children, McKenzie, Max, and Madden, led the community campaign which supports programs that help improve lives in the Marshfield area.
Another first in 2016 was a significant donation United Way received from Lang Furniture. More than 500 pieces of furniture was donated. United Way was able to offer the furniture to its partner programs and then sell the remaining furniture with the proceeds going to United Way’s Campaign. The furniture sale raised $12,148.
In the Fall, the Nutrition On Weekends program expanded yet again by adding the Loyal and Greenwood School Districts. With the addition, United Way served more than 400 children in the Auburndale, Granton, Greenwood, Marshfield, and Spencer School Districts, along with children in the Wood County Head Start program. In September the ALICE report for the state of Wisconsin was released. Local United Ways across the state invested in the ALICE report, a data-driven, comprehensive research project upending the conventional view of Wisconsin. The fact is that the number of Wisconsin households who are unable to afford life’s basic necessities far exceeds the official federal poverty statistics. United Way calls this newly revealed demographic ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. In Wisconsin, ALICE represents the nearly 670,922 men and women of all ages and races who get up each day to go to work, but who aren’t sure if they’ll be able to put dinner on the table each night. ALICE is your child care worker, home health aide, store clerk, and office assistant – all workers essential to you and to our community’s success. Before this report, ALICE was a population and community issue without a name or face. While it is true that ALICE has existed long before this study, it was not until the release of this Report that there was any way to discuss the plight of these households, nonetheless quantify them. The Right 2 Play 4 All is a program of Marshfield Area United Way that provides scholarships to children wanting to participate in sports and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, but whose families struggle to pay the costs and fees associated with participating in those respective activities. In December, Marshfield Area United Way was awarded, for the first time ever, a $2500 scholarship from the Green Bay Packer Foundation for the program.
