2013 E H T M O R F E MESSAG ENT D I S E R P D R A BO What an exciting year 2013 has been!! Just when you think our United Way Team’s plate is full, they open their heart and minds taking on several new programs/partnerships. A major new addition to the United Way services has been the introduction of the Nutrition On Weekends Program (NOW). The NOW program is a collaborative, community effort to target childhood hunger. The program provides healthy, nutritional foods for children during the weekend. The program started in October 2013 and is currently serving 113 students. Marshfield Area United Way is not able to do the job it needs without the help of volunteers. A sincere thank you to the hundreds of individuals whom gave graciously of their time and talents throughout the past year. Another new addition in 2013 was VolunteerMarshfield.org website. Volunteer Marshfield is a user-friendly website that will get you connected to area events, in-kind needs and agencies in need of helping hands. Speaking of helping hands, a HUGE thank you goes out to Campaign Drive Chairs Dan & Sharon Helwig for all the hard work they gave to this year’s campaign. The people and businesses of the Marshfield area stepped up to the plate and together we raised a total of $826,850. The generosity and commitment of our community is overflowing. It is because of all this generosity that Marshfield Area United Way and its’ Partner Programs are able to reach out and help so many people. It truly has been an honor and privilege to serve on the board the past 5 years with this last year serving as President. I’ve made many new friends and admire the dedication of our talented United Way staff. Thank you Marshfield Community for your business of changing lives. When we LIVE UNITED we can tackle the toughest problems and make every neighborhood a place where people can realize their dreams. Donna Follen 2013 Board President

MESSAGE FROM THE 2013 CAMPAIGN DRIVE CHAIRS EACH OF YOU...do make a difference! It has been both amazing and inspiring to witness the difference that local businesses and individuals have once again made in the lives of our many friends and neighbors who are in some kind of need. Whether you donated your money or your time, a winter coat or pair of boots, or a jar of peanut butter or jelly--thank you to all of you for making our community a kinder, warmer place to call home. We have been truly honored to serve as this year’s United Way chairs-we have learned so much about the dedication of the United Way staff and the agencies/individuals who tirelessly work to meet the needs of as many residents as possible (carefully and responsibly using the resources you’ve given them)--needs that continue all year, day in & day out--thank you for an experience we’ll never forget! Dan & Sharon Helwig 2013 Campaign Drive Chairs

COMMUNITY IMPACT Marshfield Area United Way has evolved from its roots as a fundraising organization to a critical community convener that mobilizes local partners, including businesses, community leaders, public officials and community residents, to expand opportunities for people to succeed. We focus on three key building blocks: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. The community impact strategy was developed to make the biggest impact on the greatest amount of people in creating long-lasting changes in community conditions. Executing this strategy successfully requires collaborating, engaging people and organizations from across the community, and working across multiple fronts. In 2013, with your generosity and work in our community, more than 16,000 lives were impacted in the Marshfield area.

OUR FOCUS ON EDUCATION... “CRADLE TO CAREER SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS”

As part of our focus on school readiness, 4971 children were prescribed a book during their well-baby/ child exam through the Reach Out and Read program. Along with given a book, parents also learned about the importance of reading to their child in the early years of his/her life. The Reach Out and Read program is done in partnership with the Marshfield Clinic.

School Readiness

Impact at least 6000 children in our service area through support of early childhood literacy, early childhood education, and other school readiness initiatives.

School Success

Support programs that successfully obtain and sustain student academic success for at least 1000 students in the Marshfield Area United Way service area.

Parental Support and Skill Enhancement

Increase both the availability and level of parent participation in parental support and skill enhancement programs by 20%.

Increase Number of Mentors, Tutors and Readers

Increase by 20%, both the number of tutors, readers and mentors, as well as, the children and youth benefitting from the service provided.

The annual backpack and school supply drive provided backpacks and school supplies to 873 students in nine school districts in the Marshfield area including: Auburndale, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marshfield, Neillsville, Pittsville, Spencer and Stratford. The backpack and school supply drive is part of Marshfield Area United Way’s focus on School Success by helping students have everything they need to start the school year ready and prepared to learn.

1891 youth were enrolled in partner programs that

focus on School Success and help students obtain and sustain academic success.

261 children were provided with warm winter

clothing (jackets, snow pants, boots, hats, mittens and gloves) through the Keep Kids Warm program. The Keep Kids Warm program is done in partnership with the Marshfield Area Community Foundation. For five years, Marshfield Area United Way, along with the City of Marshfield Parks & Recreation Department and AARP, have been supporting a group of trained volunteers who graciously offer much of their time to offer free tax preparation services to senior citizens and low- to moderate-income individuals. The tax preparation assistance program is aimed to help low to moderate income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing. In 2013, the volunteers prepared taxes for 597 people in our area. Learn more about our partners’ work... in the areas of education, income and health at...

marshfieldareaunitedway.org

2283 individuals received services, goods and/or

income supports that augmented household budgets during 2013 that helped move them toward financial stability and independence.

OUR FOCUS ON HEALTH... “SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES”

OUR FOCUS ON INCOME... “FINANCIAL STABILITY AND INDEPENDENCE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES SERVED BY MARSHFIELD AREA UNITED WAY” Income Supports

Provide services, goods and income supports that augment household budgets for at least 3000 individuals in the Marshfield Area United Way service area.

Affordable Housing

Provide transitional shelter with supportive services to at least 200 homeless individuals.

Manageable Expenses

Establish a financial literacy program capable of providing quality budgeting and other financial literacy services to a minimum of 100 individuals its first year of operation.

The Nutrition On Weekends program is a collaborative, community effort to target childhood hunger. The program was created in response to data collected from 8th, 10th, and 12th grades students in the 2012 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Twenty percent of students surveyed indicated he/she had gone to bed hungry at least once in the past thirty days because there was not enough food in the home. The program provides healthy, easy-to-prepare nutritional foods for children during the weekend. The program started serving children in our area in October 2013. Currently, the program is serving 76 students in the Marshfield School District and 37 students in the Granton School District.

Safe Home and Community

Provide services and supports that keep a minimum of 500 individuals safe.

Access to Supportive Health Services

Provide services and supports that maintain or increase health and well-being for at least 100 individuals.

NUTRITION ON WEEKENDS Marshfield Area United Way partners provided services and supports to maintain or increase the health of 421 individuals in the Marshfield area. 6
