LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR OUT OF TOUCH COUNCIL From looking at the Maui County Council’s budget proposal, we really see how out of touch with the people some of our elected officials are. The budget Mayor Arakawa submitted may have flaws but at least it addresses the issues and concerns many of us have. The county’s proposal is a true example of speaking from theory and not fact. Social programs are cut but they want another $100,000 for the Maui Visitors Bureau.

Small town redevelopment? Not one penny, totally cut. Our small towns are the heart of Maui. Street festivals, parades and cultural events all help the merchants by getting people, locals and visitors alike, into their businesses. Now NOTHING! Sports and entertainment funding?

NOTHING. Events such as baseball tournaments, soccer, swimming, boxing, martial arts, they get nothing. Our local sports organizations deserve to compete and not only against each other.

We need entertainment and culture.

Mayor Arakawa appointed someone to work on bringing more events to Maui. We need some effort from the council to support Mayor Arakawa’s action and build on what he has started.

We know our kids don’t vote but we adults do. We will remember next year.

Many travel agencies warn Americans travelling in South America that they are targets for theft and the focus of many foreign nations’ discontent. That’s true. But I have discovered a solution so we don’t have to be targets. On my second trip to Europe and later travels to Southeast Asia, the South Pacific Islands and South America, when asked, “Where are you from?”, I simply replied,

“Maui.”

Saying Maui always brought smiles, friendly handshakes, sparkling eyes and a feeling of prestige. Maui is often perceived as a friendly paradise of aloha, tropical beauty and exotic culture. Many foreigners don’t even associate Maui with America.

I took a trip to Kashmir, even after the state department warned that Kashmir was one of the most dangerous hot spots in the world and urged Americans not to go there. I was treated with the utmost respect in a territory of Al Qaeda training camps, American kidnappings and executions and Muslim extremists by simply saying I was from Maui. The same response to Mauian was given in my travels around India, during a revolution in Guatemala and amidst a war in El Salvador.

I am proud of the American Constitution and Bill of Rights. It’s too bad that certain corrupt, selfish corporate leaders, politicians, CIA and military organizations have abused locals in numerous foreign nations and embarrassed the reputation of America to the point that we can’t even say we’re Americans. It’s sad.

Well, as far as, like, minors are concerned, the parent makes the decision about the Internet access that their child receives, whether they would be able to use the Internet in the libraries or not. As far as all patrons, we don’t have any filters. We have a policy against inappropriate websites and things of that nature.

2. You know, the state librarian issued a statement, which I read briefly, and I know that under the previous regulations, we did have a few incidents that were taken care of but I don’t have it in front of me. (Do you remember if those were adults or children?) There were a few adults and there were a few children.

3. The new legislation. Well, basically that in order for us to receive federal funding, we would need to install Internet filters into our computer systems. Of course, libraries have the option of not doing it but the consequence of that is that you lose your federal funding.

There’s a policy against viewing inappropriate sites. If a patron is caught and refuses to stop viewing the material, they can be banned.) Oh, okay.

Oh, so if an adult who is a pedophile goes in to look at pornography, he can but if a student needs to do a report, they can’t? That doesn’t sound right.

4. I guess it could be. I think they’re really just trying to protect the kids. Fortunately for me, I have access to the Internet from home and so my child, who’s a senior in high school, can look things up there. I feel sorry for kids that don’t have that ability. Hopefully they can go to a friend’s house.

5. (It does affect all patrons. Do you think that’s right?) If the kids can’t do it, I don’t think anybody should be able to and they are trying to protect the kids.

1. What are current rules and regulations regarding pornography on public library computers?

1. That’s really something you would have to talk to a librarian about. Yeah, I don’t know.

2. That’s actually a good question because as a result of the Patriot Act, librarians are restricted from even talking about it. They themselves will suffer consequences and are subject to penalty if they discuss that sort of thing.

3. I haven’t read the decision myself so if you wanted more information about it you could look at aclu.com and I’m sure they would have a lot of press releases and probably a copy of the decision.

4. It limits patrons’ access to information on a broad sense. If an adult patron is looking for information on health care, it can be blocked because of words similar to those of pornography.

Look at all of the sensitive information they would need if they were looking for something on AIDS. The courts are saying that it would be less of a burden for the adult patrons to ask the librarian to remove the filter while they are on the computer but it requires them saying, “take it off.” How many people are going to know that they can have that done? It’s creating another barrier and making it harder to exercise our first amendment rights.

Weird India: On June 15, according to Dr. Chittaranjan Maity (the medical education director of the state of West Bengal), a 13-year-old boy began producing quarter-inch-long winged beetles in his urine after eggs hatched in his body.

And a few days earlier in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, according to a report in the Press Trust of India, a 9-year-old girl was "married" (in a non-binding ceremony) to a stray dog, which tribal custom requires in order to protect a child whose first tooth appears on the upper gum; the marriage had been delayed for several years because of financial considerations.

Another PETA Tactic: In April, The Independent (London) revealed that the founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the 53-year-old Ingrid Newkirk, will be advocating her cause even after she passes away. To continue PETA's campaign to educate people on the treatment of animals for food, fashion and testing, her will provides that part of her body be publicly barbecued; that her feet be turned into ornaments; that part of her skin be turned into a leather product; that the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency receive her eyes, mounted; and that the owner of the Ringling Brothers circus receive one of her fingers, mounted.

Michael Machetti, 31, filed a lawsuit in Riverside County, Calif., in April against Bullseye Tattoo and its owner, charging that the tattoo removal he had done on his neck had infected him with the flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis. Machetti said he went for the removal because coworkers had complained about the familiar two-word obscene phrase (the second word: "you") on his neck, and he wanted it replaced with the apparently more acceptable "666."

THINNING THE HERD A 20-year-old motorist was killed in Boggstown, Ind., on June 5 when he lost control of his truck while apparently aiming his rear end out the driver's side window (but no other details were released).

A Crack In Bush's Faรงade Growing WMD scandal could lead to impeachment

Bush lied about the weapons of mass destruction. He lied to us, the United Nations, and the soldiers he sent to die in Iraq. Bush's apologists defend his attempts to sell this obscene war as mere spin, but claiming certain knowledge of something that doesn't exist is hardly a question of emphasis. It's time to stop wondering where the WMDs are.

Even if nukes and gases and anthrax turn up in prodigious quantities, it won't matter. Proof of Bush's perfidy, unlike his accusations that Saddam had something to do with 9/11, is irrefutable.

Before he ordered U.S. forces to kill and maim tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi soldiers and civilians, Bush and Co. repeatedly maintained that they had absolute proof that Saddam Hussein still possessed WMDs. "There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction," Dick Cheney said in August. In January, Ari Fleisher said: "We know for a fact that there are weapons there." WMDs; not a "WMD program" as they now refer to it. WMDs--not just indications of possible, or probable, WMDs. Absolute proof.

During the first days of the war, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stared into television cameras, looked right at his employers (that's you and me), and said that he knew exactly where they were. "We know where they are," Rumsfeld said.

"They are in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad." Uh-huh. So where are they?

"Absolute" proof is a high standard--

heck, it's a nearly impossible benchmark. The last time I checked, my cat was in my kitchen, licking the milk at the bottom of my cereal bowl.

As intel goes, mine is triple-A-rated--I witnessed it this morning, and I've spent the better part of a decade observing that animal. But if you were to demand absolute proof of kitty's current location, I couldn't give it to you. I'd bet that he's sleeping on my bed. But he could be in the litter box, on the windowsill, or sneaking out an open window. Truth is, I don't know where he is. To say otherwise, to present even a well-founded hypothesis as Fact, would be a lie.

able. Waging war without cause is subject to prosecution at the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. But insiders have to talk before the media can aggressively pursue the WMD story, prosecutors can be appointed and top evildoers brought to justice.

Now Slaughtergate has its own Alexander Butterfield. Christian Westermann, a respected State Department intelligence analyst talking to Congress, has testified that Undersecretary of State John Bolton, a Bush political appointee, pressured him to change a report on Cuba so that it would back Bush claims that Cuba was developing biological weapons.

Westermann says that when he refused, Bolton tried to have him transferred.

Westermann's testimony doesn't relate to Iraq, but it puts the lie to Bushoid assertions that they never messed with the CIA. A reliable source informs me that there's a "jihad" underway between Administration political operatives and the career intelligence community.

"Guys are pissed off that they're being asked to take the fall for the White House. Look for more leaks in the future," this official says.

Meanwhile, Gen. Richard Meyers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been reduced to parsing the meaning of intelligence: "Intelligence doesn't necessarily mean something is true," he says.

With less than three weeks remaining before all items go under the hammer, the response from the public and collectors alike has been overwhelming. A storehouse of collectible surf treasures has been unearthed. While the auction will feature classic surf art, books, magazines, Hawaiiana and collectible clothing, the surfboards will undoubtedly be the event’s main attraction.

"The assortment of rare, hard to find, personalized boards with a lot of history are what make this offering unique," auction coordinator and surf aficionado Randy Rarick said. "Depending upon who you are and your knowledge of the history of surfing, some of the surfboards we have uncovered might well be considered priceless."

Among those up for bid: early wood surfboards from the Waikiki hey-deys of the ‘20s and ‘30s, a 1950s balsa board from legendary surf pioneer Woody Brown, a fantastic assortment of big-wave "guns" from the 1960s, owned and shaped by the likes of George Downing, Dick Brewer, Buffalo Keaulana, Phil Edwards, Ben Aipa and Wally Froiseth, late ‘60s psychedelic

shortboards and surfboards ridden by ‘70s stars such as Reno Abellira, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Nat Young and even Gerry Lopez's famous 1976 Pipeline Masters board.

If surfboards aren't your focus, there is a myriad of rare collectibles to make a bid on: a bathing costume, circa 1930, from the Moana Hotel, Paul Strauch's jacket from the first Smirnoff Pro-Am Surfing Classic and even a poster from Elvis's "Paradise Hawaiian Style". Or perhaps the diverse surf-art collection that includes a few neverbefore-seen items to be unveiled at the auction. These new works are by world famous surf artists John Severson, Kevin Short, Dan Fletcher and surfing champion turned artist Jeannie Chesser and were produced especially for this event. In addition, ultra rare etchings, prints and woodblocks from the 18th and 19th century depicting the first images of surfing will be up for bid.

"We've actually got too much good stuff," Rarick said, “but we will definitely be putting the best of it out there. While there will be plenty of fun, totally affordable authentic items available, some of the more unique and classic pieces will definitely be for the high-end, hardcore collectors. The most serious surf collectors in the world have confirmed that they'll be here and there's no doubt in my mind that some of these articles will break the records we set two years ago."

While that might put some bidders on the sidelines, it’s great news for the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association Junior Guard Program, who will be the beneficiaries of monies raised during the auction. During last year’s U.S. Masters Swimming Nationals, Hawaii’s swimmers proved that they were at the top of their class. They took home both individual and team titles in every event and division. This year at the Hawaii International Masters Invitational meet, they showed that they aren’t intimidated when up against an international field either.

The Kihei Aquatic Center hosted the meet, which drew 40 teams. The teams came from around the Pacific Rim, the mainland U.S., Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

The two days of events saw a new U.S. record set (Spencer Eldred of Maui) and individual wins by Maui swimmers Kimberly Delmore (100 meter freestyle, backstroke and individual medley, 50 meter breaststroke, 400 meter freestyle), Stan Zitnik (100 meter freestyle), James Krueger (100 meter freestyle, 50 meter breaststroke), David Rostetter (50 meter breaststroke and butterfly, 100 meter individual medley), Malcolm Cooper (100 meter freestyle and backstroke, 50 meter butterfly) and Spencer Eldred (50 meter and 200 meter breaststroke).

The Hawaii masters also racked up wins in four relay events. Overall, it was a fantastic showing for both Maui’s competitors and swimmers from around the state of Hawaii. With this being the first year for what promises to be an annual event, the only question is if Hawaii will be able to continue dominating in the future.

The Quest for a

Newspaper: "I was broke by the eighth issue" An incredible journey of courage and strength, Maui Time Weekly sprouted from the humblest beginnings. Now as we celebrate our sixth anniversary, we share with you our inspirational, feel-good story. But remember, this is just the beginning.

Like a spore blowing in the wind looking to find fertile ground, our fearless leader decides our fate: "We were able to earn our seed money by aerating lawns during the 75 days before we moved to Maui," Tommy Russo, publisher of Maui Time Weekly recalls. At the time of this working binge, he was a 23-year-old college student, looking toward graduation but thinking more about what lie ahead. He was standing at the crossroads and was about to embark on a journey that he could only convince one other person, his future ex-business partner, to join him on. He could stay in Chico and take a city job selling long distance plans or selling fruit, or he could strike out for something bigger.

Russo had visited Maui as the road manager for a rock band and had picked up on the absence of a good publication that relayed what was going on around Maui. There was not a paper that appealed to the market he was a part of. He convinced one of the members in the band to throw a couple of plane tickets on his credit card and head back to Maui with him.

Their mission was to inspect the likelihood of acceptance and margin for success of a small paper reaching out to a different crowd than the existing daily paper or visitor publications.

"I saw that there was a need," the now publisher of Maui Time Weekly said. "There was nothing like this paper. I saw tons of businesses that needed to get their message out but didn't really have a good vehicle to reach the visitor or younger market. The daily paper wasn't getting to that audience."

They came out and made their decision.

Maui Time Weekly was in its embryonic stages. They worked tirelessly every day to earn money for the venture. Russo owns an aerating machine they ran seven days a week to build capital for the months to come. They saved the initial start-up money, and Russo did his best to graduate from Chico State. They then headed to Maui with a truck, a laser printer, two computers and the mindset that if they failed, they could always go home.

The tiny sprout tries to grow roots in subsistence soil, and our fearless leader carries on through crises: Maui Time Weekly was born! Russo and his partner at the time, Mark D'Antonio, focused editorially on surf culture and local events in the early stages of Maui Time, making the paper an instant fit with the Maui community.

The tabloid-sized newspaper was then called Maui Time Magazine, and came out every two weeks on Tuesday. While the paper was still in its infantile stages, just as the paper started to really materialize, the reality was that there was no more money, they were totally broke.

There wouldn't be a next issue without more cash. The dream had turned into a financial liquidator as Russo and his partner found themselves completely drained by the time they were ready to print their eighth issue. A last minute advertising contract kept the presses running and allowed for the paper to gain another burst of energy and momentum.

The first four years of Maui Time's publication primarily followed the world of surfing.

Every cool-ass Maui surfer worth their weight in saltwater had a feature length bio published about them thanks to Dave Sweedler, unstoppable surf correspondent, during these early years. Maui Time was known for its full-length feature articles on surfing and its hugely successful anniversary parties. "People still talk about those parties," Russo reminisces, "the liquor luge was a big hit."

This young sapling begins to mature, branches reaching out into the world, and our fearless leader has another vision: What would evolve from a "surf rag" transforms into a budding alternative newsweekly.

As the paper progressed, Russo realized that there was another mission he was involved in.

Yes, there was a need for an advertising vehicle for a specific readership but there was also the need for another source of news, an alternative newsweekly. The existing papers were not getting to the younger audience, the modern market, or the tourist market because they lacked the ability to cover the issues that Maui Time could. They did not attack sensitive issues or cover them with the unbiased attention and reporting that readers deserve. As a result, the angle and drive of Maui Time began to change.

The Maui Time venture began to solidify and convert from a mushy vision into a well-defined reality. As more issues of the paper hit the streets, the reputation began to change. As it left the fringes of surf paper genre, it fell in line with the character and goals of such publications as the San Francisco Bay Guardian and OC Weekly. It became a true alternative newsweekly.

The alternative newsweekly category originally struck out to be an independent source of information, free from the strongholds of big business and the control of politicians and other public figures. They were the last available gatekeepers, keeping the infrastructure of business and government in check. Some were, and still are, ultra-liberal, staffed by compassionate bleeding hearts looking to make a difference in the world. Others were just out to make money. Regardless, they are independent. They are unrestricted. They cover news and community interests, no strings, no corporations attached.

Those were the ideals that founded the alternative news voice and they are still alive in a number of papers today. However, what has happened over the last ten years is what has happened to nearly all media; technology has expanded accessibility and media convergence has started to shrink the competitive market.

The thought would be that the effects of each would offset each other. But a trend is becoming present throughout the market and much of the free, uninhibited news coverage is vanishing. A major land developer on the island is now the majority owner of a local competitor to Maui Time Weekly. It is very difficult for them to cover, without bias, the over-development issue on Maui, as their owner is a major beneficiary of the practice. At the present, media companies owning more than one weekly are a minority but in examples such as this, much of the original focus and freedom of the alternative newsweekly is lost.

Although it is not yet a rarity for alternative weeklies to remain self-owned and operated, Maui Time Weekly has been able to remain one of the truly independant papers and withstand the attack of the ever-hungry animal that is media convergence. Russo bought out his founding partner in the Maui Time Productions venture and has slowly built an organization comprised of several departments and teams.

The giving tree is established, our fearless leader guides the ship: "At first it was just the two of us," Russo said. "I had all of these different job descriptions. I was our graphic designer, writer, accounting, distribution service, sales department, everything. As we grew and got more people, I was able to delegate."

Over the years, Russo has been able to pick up a list of dedicated workers that take on their respective tasks along with whatever is thrown their way. Jennifer Spector, soon to be Jennifer Russo, joined up with the Maui Time expedition in 2000. Handpicked from the pool of quality graduates of Lahainaluna, she dealt with some of the administrative duties but she slowly was coaxed into writing and editing for the paper. Today, Maui Time Weekly's It Girl has her fist in everything around the business and spends much of her time gabbing on the phone, crank calling top state government officials, bossing around interns, and playing fashion police with the employees.

Samantha Campos signed on as Maui Time Weekly's calendar girl but she doubles as a writer and page editor managing writers and assignments, balancing a backbreaking workload for the past year that she has been with the paper. Nothing happens on Maui without her knowing, and the lucky readers of Maui Time Weekly's calendar and grid bear the fruits of her labor. She has her finger on the pulse of the island, and can even tell you some of the thumping activity on outer islands if you quiz her. When Sam is not in the office on the

Maui Time Weekly was recently accepted into the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies Russo is the big boss here. Whatever he says goes. Guiding this organization with his visions for the future, his belief in the mission of this paper, and motivating his staff with infectious self-help speeches on Monday mornings are what he does best. He captivates his clients with his contagious charm. No one is exempt from feeling he is the most brilliant man on Maui when in his presence. His Jedi mind trick powers are so great, he was able to lure members of his team right from a California alternative paper, OC Weekly.

Maui Time has developed a very well defined sales department with a director devoted entirely to creating advertising revenue. Jeff Onderko, Maui Time Weekly's driven Ad Director, was originally chosen by winning a tequila shot bout with Russo at a New Orleans Bar. His abilities to pound tequila shots at the national convention for the association of alternative newsweeklies caught Russo's eye. Later that year Russo sent Onderko a ticket to Maui for what would be his first of a series of falling in love with the 'aina.

Building revenue at Maui Time Weekly is his passion, second only to surfing.

Pumping up Maui Time Weekly's classified staff is Jeff's other infatuation, as he headhunted Rob Kiger off the line at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Without any further reference to Rob's past, he has quickly become Maui Time Weekly's number one phone man, building classifieds to the next level. Rob is also Maui Time Weekly's number one ladies man, so you single ladies of Maui, beware! His smooth talking demeanor is as infectious as his comedic charm. Next week Rob takes the biggest commitment to Maui Time Weekly as he is scheduled to have a phone implanted into his head to make calling more efficient. Folks, wish him luck! phone yelling at bar owners to turn their proverbial shit in, she is contemplating serious intellectual issues, a self-absorbed bookworm, and self-proclaimed shoe-shopping expert.

Our tree begins to flower and bear fruit, and our fearless leader will usher us into the new dawn: Despite their thinly stretched staff, Maui Time Weekly is a blossoming commodity, a fact that their circulation numbers fully reflect. At any given time on Maui, there are roughly 150,000 locals teamed with about 45,000 visitors bringing the unofficial headcount to just about 200,000. With a direct circulation of 11,000 and a combined readership of about 25,000, over 10percent of the tourists and locals on Maui see each issue of Maui Time Weekly; a valiant and admirable effort for a privately owned upstart paper in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that doesn't mail its paper to homes.

The metamorphosis of the paper through its current and ongoing six-year adventure has seen the full-time staff go from two to ten and its office space transform from a single room in a beach house to an entire upper level of beachfront real estate. It has been molded from a foggy vision into a distinct reality. As the now 29-year-old Russo commutes back and forth between the businesses on his client list, he still remembers a time when there were rat holes in the walls of his office. He still remembers when he had to push his desk up against the wall of his working area so he could fold out the futon he slept on. He remembers a time when life was a little harder, he was a little younger and the dream was not yet a reality. Maui Time Weekly was recently accepted into the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and the newspaper that started out lacking a formal business plan is now well on its way to becoming a well-established alternative newsweekly, a voice in the Pacific. Jonny's Burger Joint I cleaned all day Sunday and ended up grubby and starving. It's a dirty job but sometimes it just has to be done.

Searching my mind for somewhere to eat without having to change clothes and clean up my act I remembered an old favorite, Jonny's Burger Joint. My cleaning crew and I headed down there in our filthiness to fulfill a mighty hunger and thirst and we weren't disappointed.

Here at Jonny's Burger Joint, you can just make yourself at home. Take a seat where you’d like, the menu is lighted up on the wall for you to choose from their many delectable items. I was surprised to see that they had extended their menu, and now there were four categories of foods to order from. They have Mexican, Burgers, Salads and Fried Items. I just love a menu that doesn't mince words, nothing pretentious here. We seated ourselves at the bar and the bartender took our order promptly. An assortment of beers first, then I ordered garlic fries and chicken wings from the "Fried Items", and Jonny's Mahi Mahi Burger from the "Burger" menu. My pals ordered the Jonny's Original Burger, Jonny's signature item, of course.

Things were happening at the bar there was a pool game going, MegaTouch video games being played, and old friends getting three-sheets-to-the-wind.

We engaged in entertaining conversation, even winning a small wager on a Burt Reynolds movie of all things, with our chum Chris. It's all part of the evening diversions here at Jonny's. As our chicken wings and garlic fries

showed up, we dove in like vultures. The garlic on the fries were actually chunks of fresh, herbed garlic - vampires beware, these are delicious! The chicken wings were some of the best, and I would know, I try them wherever I go. These crispy fried morsels of juicy boned chicken were served with a tasty hot sauce and a creamy ranch dressing, and celery sticks.

So the burgers arrive, open-faced with the lettuce, Oluwalu Nui tomato, onion and pickle beside them to be administered how you like.

A bucket of condiments is placed by you with everything from A-1 to Tabasco inside of it.

You put the masterpiece together and let the symphony of flavors begin to work on your taste buds. This place specializes in burgers so juicy that they put a roll of paper towels, on a fancy wood rack, within arms reach because they know you're gonna get busy mopping up.

After eating like that, it was time to retire.

Our bill came quickly and was very reasonable with burgers running us only $6.99 each, and the wings a mere $5.99, with garlic fries only $2.49. Tasty and affordable. As we took leave that evening, a fond admirer of my friend yelled out to us in the parking lot, "I still love your breasts!" How polite! We love your breasts, too. But more so, we love Jonny's burgers. Who is this Johnny guy anyway?

As we pondered this mystery, we returned to our little basement burger joint a few days later with a little lighter fare in mind. Jonny's got weight watchers in mind with his Atkin's Burger and Special Burger Salad on the menu.

While we tried his intriguing burger salad, $6.99, coupled with deluxe ballpark nachos $4.99, the afternoon side on

The ol’ double fister...nice form Jonny’s was more serene. I also ordered the House Green Salad, which came with crisp salad greens, lots of onions and bell peppers, mushrooms, and black olives. This was a hearty and robust salad for $4.99. The burger salad was an incredible meal of greens loaded with grilled onions, mushrooms, and chopped burger patty topped with cheese. The unlikely combination was a taste sensation. Jonny knows what he's doing.

Provenance Vineyards 2000 Carneros, Merlot Napa Valley $29.99 Provenance is new to the Napa Valley wine area. Their main focus is selecting the best vineyards in Napa from the best growing areas to create good, age-worthy wine.

Winemaker Tim Renaldi adds an extra kick to Provenance's wines. Tim was the wine maker for Duck Horn Vineyards, which has produced some of the most sought after Merlots in all of America.

Carneros is the wine region located at the southern end of the valley in San Pablo Bay where Sonoma and Napa Counties meet.

Carneros gets that cool breeze from the Pacific and is thought to have some of the best growing conditions for Chard and Pinot Noir. Growers have also had huge successes growing Merlot on the north side of Carneros for more than 30 years. The temperature gets a little warmer and better exposure to the north produces an ideal grape for Merlot.

The wine of the week is the Provenance 2000 Merlot. The 2000 season experienced more than desirable growing conditions for Merlot, which resulted in a wine that is full of body and character. The cool climate of Carneros creates a rich cola, cassis and toffee character to the taste. The finish spans out and lingers, culminating on a greener note, showing us how the cooler weather doesn't let the grape ripen immediately. Get this wine while it lasts. At this price, there are not many that compare. Enjoy!

Just Fluking Around A Review of Christopher Moore's Fluke For such a funny guy, Christopher Moore, author of the new novel Fluke, looks pretty serious as he sits anonymously in the café at the Kahului Borders Books & Music making notes in what appears to be Magic Marker in what appears to be a Marble Composition notebook. When I interrupt, he looks interested in what I might have to say, which embarrasses me a little because I've come to ask him the question dreaded by all authors: "Where'd you get the idea for this book?"

When I ask, Moore proves gracious as well as accommodating, and he gives a better answer than most. It's an answer I am ready to hear, for in a world where commercial success consists to a horrifyingly large extent of reconstituting one's previous works, Christopher Moore is an anomaly. He tries something new every time, contemplating what's been interesting to him both lately and for a long time. This time, there was but one answer: "Here, there be whales." The problem was that he didn't know all that much about whales. As Moore puts it, "I have a very wide but shallow base of knowl-

edge, which qualifies me as a contestant for 'Jeopardy' or to be a novelist." He needed to do some research.

So as a charming contemporary author, and lacking his own boat and whale foundation, Moore convinced Dr. Jim Darling, Flip Nicklin, and Meagan Jones, to allow him to accompany them as they worked winters researching whale song around Maui. Much of what he learned appears in the novel, but he is the first to recommend extreme caution to anyone who applies fiction to actual whales. "When in doubt, assume I made it up," he sardonically concludes his "Author's Note." After three winters, Moore had enough material for the book, and his personal goals for the writing of Fluke had crystallized: to reveal the truly deep commitment of whale researchers and to write a very funny novel.

Moore has succeeded admirably on both counts.

Fluke’s subtitle I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings not only aptly recalls Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, but also underscores one of the motivations for Nathan Quinn, our hero, and raises one of the most enchanting mysteries about whales themselves: why do whales sing?

This question recurs through the novel, and in the end, Moore offers a fascinating--and surprising, though not entirely unexpected to those who know the poem--theory for those undersea symphonies of blurts, moans, and squeals that we humans cannot hear enough.

Fluke has all of the spice and salt of a good whale tale. There are mysterious disappearances at sea, the rough and rollicking harbor life of a seaport town (oddly resembling Lahaina), colorful characters with shady pasts, smatterings of pidgins and lingoes from every curve of the planet, people who appear human but aren't, and people who aren't human and appear to be.

Fluke is funny--on every page--and in these days and times, a good laugh should not be under-rated. The LOL (Laughing Out Loud) factor is essential, and Moore's novel is designed for that. Moore names John Steinbeck ("the funny stuff!"), Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, and Tom Robbins as inspirations in his own work, and he chose well. When Moore decided to really focus on writing--before that, he "wrote about twelve pages in ten years"--the work of these writers pointed in a direction he wanted to take.

After all, they were writing funny novels addressing serious concerns, and they "were getting away with it." He would, too.

And he has. His previous six novels meet that standard easily. All written in the spirit of pro-

voking irreverence and fun, the novels of Christopher Moore continue to be seriously funny about subjects many take seriously indeed.

Moore entertains and intrigues, so to refresh your memory of the Cosmic Chuckle that resounds profoundly within our daily lives as deeply and persistently as the throb of Gooville off the coast of Chile (it's in the book!), take a look at Fluke. After all, laughter is as important as song, even whale song.

How To Be Dumb Reese Witherspoon Knows Only Too Well Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (★) This year's Hollywood summer movies are hitting a slick patch of dumb that shows no sign of abating. The once promising Reese Witherspoon (see "Freeway" for when she was actually promising) gaily marches on as the high paid poster child of intellectually challenged bimbos in this sub-marginal movie whose title sounds like a twisted trailer trash rip off of a shabby west coast rap album. Little miss pretty-in-pink, Elle Woods (Witherspoon), attempts to invite her dog Bruiser's mother to her upcoming wedding to her pussy whipped fiancé Emmett (Luke Wilson), only to discover that the little bitch is being used for cosmetics animal testing. So it's off to Washington for Elle to get a bill through congress to abolish animal testing, and voilà, there you have another dumb, crappy summer movie.

Trading on the obvious connection between beautifying cosmetics and animal testing may sound like heady stuff for a ditzy character like Witherspoon's Elle Woods, but don't worry because nobody will walk out of this movie feeling an ounce of guilt over pur-

chasing animal tested products. No, the effect here is, now that the issue has been covered in a cheesy Hollywood movie, everything is resolved and we can all move on to whatever other topic needs trivializing. It's a contrary effect to a wellmade documentary that addresses a controversial subject, wherein a social discourse is opened up.

The "Legally Blonde" franchise has more to do with giving license to young American girls to obsess over purchasing beauty products and clothes to a point of utter stupefaction. But this is supposed to be a dumb and silly comedy isn't it?

The film's title alone speaks volumes about the box that the filmmakers believe audiences' heads are, or should be, stuck inside. Apart from there being something racially amiss in the title, there's the peculiar dichotomy between the hard-capitalized font for "LEGALLY" and the rest of the epithet. From a design perspective, the logo is a nightmare of clashing fonts and morphology that scream 'deranged' at the top of its lungs. There's also something curiously moronic about the fact that all three Hollywood movies opening this week have a semicolon structure begging for attention (note

The semicolon trend in American movie titles bespeaks a difference between demanding, and commanding respect. When Elle Woods sets up her desk in Congresswoman Rudd's (Sally Field - "Norma Rae") office, she covers her desk in pink cloth, and plasters her corner of the office in construction paper pastiche that only a 10year-old girl could appreciate. Perhaps "Legally Blonde 2: Winning Through Alienation" would have been a better title for a movie where an obsessive compulsive fashion freak menaces society with "warm fuzzies" while being "superpleased" about how "awesome" she feels about being "so truly amazing" to herself.

direct "Legally Blonde 2," presumably because he was an upstart director whom she could effectively direct the movie through. Witherspoon has well mastered a wide-eyed Betty Boop expression, but alas without the sultry heavy lidded bedroom eyes. Elle Woods represents a brittle anti-sexual blonde that's the antithesis of the physically driven ethics of Debbie Harry's (refer to "Blondie") far superior blonde incarnation.

"Legally Blonde 2" will likely make trillions of box office dollars, signaling green lights for more sequels in which Reese Witherspoon makes every male in the audience wither and wince at her obnoxious example for young girls to imitate.

Sure "Legally Blonde" is supposed to be a silly comedy - one predicated on frivolous American consumerism instructing girls to shop. PG-13 (for some sex-related humor) RT-95 mins. MTW

Another One Bites the Dust R.I.P. Maui Brews, Lahaina What happened? Not only is another pack of wild and woolly bar employees released onto the streets, but we lose another potentially rockin’ club venue that housed some great events over the years! Why on an island so starved for entertainment is this tragic coup de grâce happening over and over again?

When will it end?! Heavy, heavy sigh.

Ah well, as Shakespeare said, “Praising what is lost, makes the remembrance dear.” Or, in the wise words of ‘80s hairband rockers, Cinderella, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” So sad, so true. Or as Shakespeare puts it, “Summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” Hmm, yes.

Girls’ Full Throttle Action Charlie’s Angels 2, at Ka’ahumanu 6, Kukui Mall, and Front Street Theaters Every little girl needs a fairy tale, but spare me the Prince-Charming bullshit... How about three hot chicks, fashionably spike-heel clad and kicking ass, as they motorcross, surf, weld, forensically solve cases and pose as nuns, breaking hearts and limbs across the metropolis to reach the happily ever after – a new puppy! It may be just as unrealistic as pumpkin-turning coaches and gingerbread houses, but with sexy villains (pictured above and below, left) and star cameo appearances by everyone from ex-Angel Jaclyn Smith to ex-punk Henry Rollins, Charlie’s Angels puts over the top any and all expectations that this is just another incredibly silly chickflick. It is just that – over the top and silly, but empowering, and it’s not pretending to be something it’s not. And that might be a better moral-of-the-story than relying on some fictitious “prince” to come save you from yourself.

NONE MORE BLACK "FILE UNDER BLACK" If you have never feasted your ears on the melodic hardcore stylings of Kid Dynamite (firstly, shame on you) then this record won't mean anything to you. This is Jason Shevchuk's (frontman of KD) new band and it just may be the most original thing to come out of punk in a long time. Not too syrupy pop, nor obnoxiously hardcore and incredibly difficult to pigeonhole, NMB focus their energy into being a band that encompasses such a vast array of rock music while still leaving enough room to unequivocally have a sound of their own. This is undoubtedly the most satisfying punk rock record of the year so far. You'll hear traces of Social Distortion, Metallica, The Kinks and The Police but don't worry, it works. -Fat Wreck Chords

THE SUICIDE MACHINES "A MATCH AND SOME GASOLINE" No punk band has had such an awkward career as The Suicide Machines. I remember when Frank Suburbia once played a demo tape he had by a band called "Jack Kevorkian and The Suicide Machines" and the horror I was faced with when I found their first official record released on Hollywood Records with a sicker emblazoned across the front of the CD boasting about the "Free Sticker Inside!” Of course, by then they dropped the whole "Jack Kevorkian" thing. But to be fair they were an excellent band that came closer than anyone else in capturing the energy and spirit of the legendary Operation Ivy. Then naturally they pissed on that by putting out the most obscenely uncharacteristic pop record for a punk band that is still shamefully felt today. But now, armed with barbs of political unrest, societal woes and wartime anthems, not to mention finally getting off the worst label for a punk band to be on (It is called "Hollywood Records"), they are back on track if just slightly off the mark. They still do a much better job of conveying the spirit of anti-war sloganeering than NOFX did on their last record. -Side One Dummy Records

JAWBREAKER "ETC." This has been out for awhile but it still feels pertinent enough to riff about. That and it hasn't left my CD player in the last month or so. This is, for all intents and purposes, the bookend to one of the single most influential emo bands of all time. These guys were the first band to put gorgeous poetry, unbridled, raw, pop melodies and the urgency of the most unabashed punk rock in one place - in turn, being the most needed shot in the arm. Indeed, Jawbreaker is definitely one of the most often imitated but never duplicated bands in the punk underground. This record is a collection of obscure leftover material or b-sides throughout their career from their early demos to the out-of-print (but soon to be re-released) final record "Dear You". To make it even better, Aaron Elliot (Cometbus) scrawls all the liner notes with commentary from the band members. While I would normally recommend checking out the other records first, this record will give you a rather chronological overview of their growth as a band. -Blackball Records

MEST "SELF-TITLED" Well, right off the bat, I'm not terribly impressed with The Transplants-style cover. Makes this seem more street level than these guys really are. Also, Benji from Good Charlotte on guest vocals isn't a good sign. Plus, there's a song that sounds waaayyyy too much like Oasis.

Strike Three. Now, for those that know me, from best friends to the most vague of acquaintances, look away. Really, this won't be a good thing to see. Okay, they’re gone, right? Right... This is a pretty sweet, major label, pop-punk record.

Tight nasally vocals, flawless pop melodies and production full of power and energy. Even their ska/reggae songs are expertly executed. Who cares if these guys sound like Goldfinger (John Feldmann, the lead singer of Goldfinger is the producer of this album, curious)?! This won't break any new ground, rekindle lost loves or anything like that but it's an awesome guilty pleasure record.

UNHAPPILY CLEVER AFTER I am a 37-year-old gay man. After dating "Michael" on and off for two years, I started seeing him exclusively. He's wonderful, great fun, and treats me like royalty. His most annoying habit is his reluctance to let me pick up or even split a dinner check. He brings adventure to my life (like by taking me out on his motorcycle), and I expose him to new things as well. The problem is my friends. They aren't shy about insisting (out of his earshot, thankfully) that he's my intellectual inferior, and any serious relationship won't last. Michael's no Einstein, but I can talk to him for hours, even if we discuss a U2 concert instead of Bono's politics. (Frankly, I have all the geopolitical, socio-sexual banter I need, socially and at work.) Before Michael, I would have described my "perfect 10" as an intellectual corporate executive with a body like Adonis. But, even if Michael became that tomorrow, it wouldn't make me desire him more. I think I'd be very happy sharing my life with him. For me, though, a committed relationship should be forever, so I don't want to start something that's doomed from the outset. Maybe I should rethink these friends' place in my life. Or should I let Michael go to spare him the "inevitable" breakup down the road and add "IQs below 150 needn't apply" to the personals ad I place afterward?

-Accidentally Overjoyed Most people start out with a list -- the stuff they MUST have in a partner. A list is a good thing, to a point -- the point at which one's list looks like the New York City phone book, and reads like it came from somebody who writes the small print for airline frequent flyer programs. Freud fans would call such list-holders "anal retentive." I think "terminally single" sounds more polite.

Too bad you, like so many people, copied your expectations out of the wrong best-selling relationship manuals -- those written by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and The Brothers Grimm. The fairy tale has it that there's one perfect person for you; you just collect him and proceed to the checkout lane marked "happily ever after." But, what if there's more to you than being merely a princess in distress or a guy in a tin suit with a really bad pageboy haircut? And "happily ever after"? That's vague. There's no mention in "happily ever after" of who, exactly, is on doggie vomit duty, and who's in the humiliating position of making up sad stories for the 1800 lady when the credit card bill is late.

This isn't to say you can't have it all. You just can't have it all in one place. So your boyfriend can't break into Middle English to ask whether you've done the dishes or build a nuclear reactor out of common household cleaning products.

The guy makes you happy. Not happy in the way you'd planned to be happy, but actually happy.

You could drop him and keep reaching for the intellectual brass ring because others insist you need it. Unfortunately, the brass ring, should you ever get your hands on it, is likely going to turn your finger the same color as all your "friends" who find it troubling that you're spending your time having sex instead of participating in a sexual politics roundtable.
