The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL As these words are being written, a fire is raging above Honoapiilani Highway.

Hopefully by the time you read these words it’ll be contained, but we’ll take the opportunity, as ever, to thank the men and women working overtime in the heat and smoke to keep us safe.... Last month, one of MauiTime’s distribution boxes was removed from the sidewalk on S. High Street in Wailuku. Publisher Tommy Russo contacted the County, and after a back-andforth e-mail exchange with Communications Director Mahina Martin was told it was a state thing. Russo then contacted the state Department of Transportation (DOT). DOT rep Charlene Shibuya confirmed the box had been removed. Russo asked why, after sitting there for more than 10 years, our box had suddenly become an issue. Shibuya responded that a complaint had been filed by the County. When Russo asked which department, he says Shibuya replied, “the Mayor’s office.” Now, we don’t know for certain what led the Mayor’s office to file the complaint or why Martin didn’t know—or chose not to share—that information. What we do know is that last October, County employees confiscated copies of MauiTime from the County building and were caught multiple times by Russo and in security footage obtained by MauiTime. The issue in question featured a caricature of the Mayor as a brain-chomping zombie (it’s since gone on to win some awards). We’re going to keep pursuing this and will try to get our box back on High Street (DOT says we can apply for a permit). In the meantime, we’ll leave it to you to connect the dots.... General Growth Properties—a rather ironic name given the circumstances—disclosed that it will probably lose 13 shopping centers due to their status as “underperforming retail assets,” in a June 3 filing with the Securities and Exchange

Commission. General Growth owns or

manages ten properties in Hawaii, including Whaler’s Village and the Queen Kaahumanu Center. None of those properties are on the chopping block for now, and General Growth says it’s on track to emerge from bankruptcy later this year. In April 2009, when the company filed for Chapter 11, it was $27 billion in debt, according to a Pacific Business News dispatch. Kinda puts your credit card balance in perspective....

LOCAL The Honolulu Star-Advertiser: sounds wrong, but get used to saying it. This week, after a protracted build-up, Oahu’s two dailies officially became one. Technically it was the Star-Bulletin’s parent company (Oahu Publications) that bought out the Advertiser’s parent company (Gannett).

It may not make you look like a tough guy, but it will make you look like something even better: a President. ■

Vintage Hawaii bills offer a window into history—and a link to the present

have a framed twenty dollar bill unchanged since the end of WWII. I also have, within the same frame, a ten and a five dollar bill in the same condition.

This frame is hand made, the bills are nestled in cutouts of cream-colored cardboard and the entire wall hanging is reversible, revealing both sides of each bill. They are “A” series, circa 1935, from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and issued with treasury seals and serial numbers in an unusual brown ink. On the presidential portrait side of each is printed the word “HAWAII” twice and sideways, near the edges. On the monument depiction side the word “HAWAII” is printed straight across the view. This beautiful presentation of history was given as a wedding gift to my husband and myself in 1987. It was designed and assembled by the father of a good friend who lives in New Jersey and had spent time on Maui during WWII. The history: United States military officials feared that, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese might attack again and invade, possibly gaining access to U.S. currency. So they ordered Hawaii’s Governor Poindexter to declare martial law. Poindexter consulted President Roosevelt, who agreed with the idea; he thought if another attack didn’t come, the military could easily suspend the order.

Martial law during wartime was allowed in Hawaii under the same act of Congress that had made the island chain a U.S. territory. The military controlled daily life to an incredible degree. They froze wages, set working hours and regulated bars and restaurants. A strictly enforced nighttime blackout was decreed, and anyone caught with a lit cigarette, pipe or cigar, a dial on a clock, a lit stove or candle that was visible to the outside, was subject to arrest. A car with the headlights on at night was severely prohibited, and the army instituted a 6pm-6am curfew for any vehicle not on official business. Intelligence reports on 450,000 Hawaiians were drawn up as a result of violations. Officials confiscated more than 300,000 acres of land for military use. They controlled rent prices and, of course, censored the press.

The Big Five companies wined and dined Generals and politicians and various highranking military officers at social events; naturally the military was influenced in Big Five’s direction. Criticism was deemed unpatriotic and censorship of the press assured no public debate on any of these issues.

On the tenth of January, 1942, the Governor issued an order recalling all regular U.S. paper money in the Islands. In July, the replacements with “HAWAII” on them assured the U.S. government these bills could be singled out and declared worthless. The logic

announcing the suspension of martial law and the restoration of habeas corpus. After the war, the federal judge for the islands condemned the conduct of martial law, saying, “Gov. Poindexter declared lawfully martial law but the Army went beyond the governor ... threw the Constitution into the discard and set up a military dictatorship.”

was simple: if an enemy captured a depository or a bank or money reserve, the U.S. could immediately demonetize the specially printed notes.

One version is that when everyone in Hawaii was directed to turn in cash and securities, an astonishing $200 million-plus was gathered. Someone in the government determined it would be better to burn it all than risk it falling into Japanese hands, so this fortune was reportedly taken to the Nuuanu Mortuary on Oahu. The mortuary was unable to dispose of it all in the proscribed time, so what they couldn’t handle allegedly went up in smoke at the Aiea Sugar Plantation.

All outgoing mail was read by military censors, and letters that could not be edited with black ink or scissors were returned to the sender to be rewritten. Long-distance telephone calls were required to be in English so military personnel could listen in and understand. In addition, Hawaiians were forbidden to make bank withdrawals of more than $200 in cash per month or to carry more than $200 in cash at one time. To keep track of civilians, the military issued identification cards to everyone over the age of six; anyone caught without a card was subject to arrest.

The military also oversaw the Hawaiian legal system, with military courts trying thousands of cases, most of them having nothing to do with wartime security. People accused of a crime went before a military judge who heard the charges—typically without the presence of a lawyer—and then passed sentence, which could only be revoked by a pardon from the military Governor. Never before in the history of the Constitution had its guarantees been so overtly challenged, yet they got away with it partly because Hawaii wasn’t yet a state.

Martial law was hated and fought against on all the Islands, at great risk to the locals, but finally, in 1944, a federal judge ruled that a military government amounted to dictatorship. The whole situation was declared no longer valid. But meanwhile, back in Hawaii, the military ignored the ruling. President Roosevelt had to step in. October of 1944 brought an order

he “HAWAII” overprints were absorbed into the economy of the islands and eventually phased out by the war’s end, though in the years since occasional newspaper stories tell of people finding surprise stashes of “HAWAII” emergency currency—in Hawaii and elsewhere.

Ours came from New Jersey, after all. In 1980 a man painting an attic discovered $100,000 in “HAWAII” overprints, a total of 1,793 bills. In a more recent revelation, an elderly woman who had accumulated some $45,000 in “HAWAII” currency asked a banker how she might go about selling them.The advice given was to spend it since the bills were not crisp or new.

They were simply worth face value.

The real mystery is where all the confiscated non-”HAWAII” overprint bills ended up. We all know the whole of it didn’t get torched. Those bills were official U.S. treasury notes; they didn’t have one historical or unusual mark of interest on them at the time, no identifiable differences pointing them out as special. And yet they were fated to burn, and one version says that they did. Perhaps there’s another version.

On December 7, 1941, the Lurline was on her usual run from Honolulu to San Francisco when she received news about the attack behind her and immediately began to zigzag and divert from her normal course.

She arrived in San Franciso on December 10. The next day Matson’s famed four white ships were handed over to the U.S. Maritime Commission, painted wartime gray and transformed into troop transports.

Nonetheless, rumors persist to this day that Matson passenger ships collected and evacuated civilians carrying fortunes from Hawaii.

The U.S. plan to demonetize any captured wartime emergency currency offered the government the protection of preventing any benefit to the enemy, but not one iota of protection for the individuals whose money was initially confiscated, nor any way to locate and prosecute the thieves who allowed millions of dollars to be stolen. Some might say it wasn’t actually stolen from anybody, since it was all replaced by the “HAWAII” bills, but those who absconded with the originals made millions of dollars that weren’t supposed to be there. TRAPPED IN PARADISE It’s clear, based on a May Time magazine dispatch, that Norway’s felons and miscreants are of a superior class than America’s.

When Norway’s brand-new Halden prison opened in April, the country’s King Harald V headlined a glitzy gala that celebrated what has been called the world’s “most humane” lockup. Among the facilities: a sound studio, jogging trails, a guest house for inmates’ visitors and a scrumptious-smelling “kitchen laboratory” where murderers and bandits can learn to cook. Guards are unarmed (half are women) and intermingle with the rapists, drug dealers and others, dining with them and joining them in intramural sports.

The recidivist rate for Norwegian prisoners in general is only 20 percent (versus 50 percent to 60 percent in the United States), but it is still too early to tell whether Halden’s prisoners will find life behind bars so pleasant that they don’t mind risking another stretch there by returning to crime.

Three months later, without much fanfare, came the official announcement that the government’s (i.e., the Workers’ Party’s) chief finance minister, Pak Nam-gi, had been executed by firing squad.

CAN WE UNDISCOVER THE NOSE LEECH? Among the new species discovered this year are a “nose” leech, a “Dracula” fish, a “psychedelic” frogfish and a “bombardier” worm, according to scientists at the University of Arizona and medical school researchers in Lima, Peru. The Peru-based leech, which is fanged and probably has been around since the time of the dinosaurs, prefers nasal mucus as a habitat. The “Dracula” fish of Myanmar, with “canine-like fangs,” has an extraordinarily flexible mouth. The

multicolored frogfish has apparently adapted to live among the colorful, venomous coral off Bali, Indonesia. The “bombardier” worm, found in California’s Monterey Bay, releases glow-in-the-dark projectiles when threatened.

WELL DUNG British and Australian researchers, writing in a journal article in March, concluded that the world’s strongest insect (relative to body weight) is the male dung beetle, which can lift more than 1,100 times its weight (equivalent for an average male human: 80 tons). Since the beetles mate inside dung patties, their every move is a struggle against the resistance posed by the feces. (On the other hand, the researchers also found weaker dung beetles that mated just fine helped not by their strength but by unusually large testicles.)

FECAL MATTERS Madison, Wisconsin, neighbors Nina Bell, 56, and Arnessa Battles, 38, were cited for disorderly conduct in March in a dispute over Battles’s dog’s winter-long output of droppings that had just been revealed by melting snow. According to the police report, by the time an officer arrived on the scene, both of the women had smeared each other’s cars with large quantities of dog poop.

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) Jacob Collins, 28, was arrested in April and charged with burglary of Matlack’s Hometown Pharmacy in Landisville, New Jersey, despite the fact that the medicine he stole was probably by mistake. Police said they were almost certain Collins was after the painkiller “Oxycontin” but instead swiped a supply of “Oxybutynin,” which treats overactive bladder. (2) On the other hand, Sean Almond, 43, was charged on the same day as Collins for allegedly robbing the Kangaroo Mart on Wilroy Road in Suffolk, Virginia, and could have used some Oxybutynin. Almond was caught immediately after the robbery because his getaway was delayed. Stop! So says this doc, which explores how Americans have been sold on the idea that their tap water is full of poison, and how big corporate plastic bottle makers might actually be ensuring this is true by pumping toxins into the ground.

Rock Steady: The Roots of Reggae (10pm, Celestial Cinema) Old footage and new are melded in this doc/ concert film that traces the genesis of Jamaica’s most successful (musical) export.

FRIDAY, JUNE 18 Blood Into Wine (4pm, Castle Theater) You may know Maynard James Keenan—the subject of this singular character study—as the prog rocker who’s played with Tool and A Perfect Circle.

What you may not know is that he’s also a winemaker, growing grapes in the harsh-yet-fertile deserts of Arizona. And he doesn’t even drink. Seriously. NR, 100 min.

Queen of the Sun (6pm, Castle Theater) Like so many things, we never appreciated bees until they started disappearing.

This doc, which explores the pollenspreading insects and their plight, has been generating a lot of buzz. Sorry.

Norman (10pm, Celestial Cinema) A high school kid fights angst and loneliness, unaware, apparently, that he’s in the company of every other high school kid ever.

For nearly two decades, Steele has been riding the lip of the surf doc world, churning out awardwinningâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and genre-stretchingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;films that embrace the dreamy essence of the sport and celebrate the hardworking slackers who populate it. here’s more to film festivals than merely watching movies.

Festivals like Cannes, Telluride and Tribeca have virtual worlds revolving around them, and ours is no different. In addition to celluloid creations, the Maui Film Festival plays host to some of the most elaborate and well-attended Maui foodie parties on the island, parties created specifically for the festival-goers.

Tuff Gongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst-ever white artist, Alborosie embodies reggaeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past and future â&#x20AC;&#x153;

M

i music curse me. Mi music curse me a lot,â&#x20AC;? says reggae artist Alborosie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not in terms of money,â&#x20AC;? he continues, and indeed, he has been successful, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but [when] it comes to every day life.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every year is a hurricane,â&#x20AC;? he says, implying both literal and figurative meaning. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Up â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;til ten days ago, I was in between a crossfire, gunshots and warâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a state of emergency.â&#x20AC;? His patois tonality is thick, but faintly tinged with an accent recalling his Italian nativity (he kindly makes an effort to â&#x20AC;&#x153;sound proper English,â&#x20AC;? when speaking with the press). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every day I am keeping mi eyes open, because [you] have to be careful when you moveâ&#x20AC;Ś Living in Jamaica is not easy, as you know. Maybe I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say Jamaica. Maybe, Townâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Kingston.â&#x20AC;?

For the better part of a decade, Alborosie has called Kingston home. Reared in a small seaport city on the island of Sicily, he made the move to the famous West Indies isle to immerse himself in reggaeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthplace.

But on this island nation within the Greater Antillesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;concentrated in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Town,â&#x20AC;? its largest and capitol parishâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is escalating violence that by May of this year numbered an average of five murders a day, according to reports in The Jamaica Gleaner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want people to understand what I am doing is not an easy ting,â&#x20AC;? says Alborosie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just music [where] mammaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boy go in a room with some friends and play some music nice anâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; den go back home, you know.â&#x20AC;?

For Alborosie, Jamaica is nothing but home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Beautiful people. You know I love it... The only ting, now, you need to be careful,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love to swim. Sometimes you swim in a pool full of sharks. So we have to know how to swim and where to swim.â&#x20AC;?

But at the end of the day, every challenge is both by and for his music. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Music is mi life. Music is definitely mi ting,â&#x20AC;? Alborosie says, before pausing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Actually, I would say to you, a long time ago, music was mi life. I change little bit of miself. Because music is a good ting, but after a time, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bad ting. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a troublemaker. So, I always gotta say tings about tings â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;appening around miâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and I like to talk da truth.â&#x20AC;?

He says he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a set songwriting process, but â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love to watch news. I love to watch politics. The world is moving and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m inspired by that movement, you know? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basically the way I work.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;So you love [music] and hate it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a beautiful woman, you love her, but sometimesâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? he laughs, and when he says â&#x20AC;&#x153;beautiful woman,â&#x20AC;? his Italian roots are genially evident.

Beyond the ways his adopted, war-torn world have changed his once purer affections

of music, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changed himself entirely, too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Imagine me as an Italian, as a youth, going to a country where dey talk different, eat different, do in a different way,â&#x20AC;? Alborosie explains. Born Alberto, he considers his new moniker representative of his â&#x20AC;&#x153;second life.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had to change miself 100 percent,â&#x20AC;? he says.

When asked if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infused anything of his Italian culture, he says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jamaican people love the mafia ting,â&#x20AC;? and chuckles slightly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dat is my culture, dat is where I come from. I grew up in dat environment. Is like you come from de ghetto and you know de badman them, because you grow up in that situation and you know exactly what is what. For you itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s normalâ&#x20AC;Ś So in Jamaica, maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a shark too,â&#x20AC;? he says, his laugh broadening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a pool full of sharks, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just a different kind of shark. Tiger shark.â&#x20AC;?

o be sure, Alborosie is unique.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first white artist to receive distribution from Tuff Gong, and beyond the Bob Marley-brand stamp of approval, this multi-instrumentalist has been embraced by reggae legends and industry insiders alike.

His appearance at Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Maui Roots Festival is part of a 23-show tour of the United Statesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; western end. But heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quick to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to tell you, my teachers, dem did the job for me. [They] open a door for me to just go through. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not me building the road, I just traveling the road that somebody do for me. And I feel blessed and I feel

honored to do what I am doing.â&#x20AC;?

As for what he thinks heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll contribute to that road, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even quicker to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think an artist should ever tell you how dem gonna contribute. I just doing my ting. And mi and mi ting is not a job, it is a mission. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what I am doing for the cause, but I know I am doing something. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not up to me to judge my work.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reggae is just like that. Natural. Straight.

Just straight on your face, like that. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why people sometimes try to fight reggae, because reggae just come to you and tell you the truth.â&#x20AC;?

With the changing face of the music industry in the digital age, every genre is under siege. Alborosie says he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe in globalization, and thinks thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what is happening to music right now. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I try to keep myself as vintage as possible,â&#x20AC;? he says, likening himself to a mechanic in his studio, fixing things and relishing whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tangible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course, sometimes we have to do what we have to do to use what dey have anâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; what is available. But in the meantime I try to keep myself electric and not digital.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like you eat organic food. That is me. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m doing my best to keep myself electric. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why people maybe feel mi music.â&#x20AC;? â&#x2013;

Jones is a unique pop singer who sports an indie spirit that makes her tunes speak with a strong inner voice that feels as good to relate to as it sounds. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m the kind of person (and I suspect there are lots of us out there) who will occasionally discover a breathtakingly fun, inspiring song and keep it on repeat until my iPod cries with boredom. Awarded my prestigious â&#x20AC;&#x153;Loopedâ&#x20AC;? award are Jonesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous tracks â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chuck Eâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Loveâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Making Whoopee.â&#x20AC;? That commendation alone should be enough, but I suppose Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also mention that her singer-songwriter work earned her Grammy awards for Best New Artist, Best Jazz Performance and Best Pop Album. Worth Repeating

Kamehameha the Great. Everyone knows this warrior king for having conquered the Hawaiian Islands with battlefield technologies of colonial introduction. While these days such a feat may not seem that a big deal, it must be reiterated that uniting the islands was no new ambition. Until 1810 it remained unattainedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;though not untriedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and Hawaiiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last king, Kalakaua, called each endeavor until Kam, â&#x20AC;&#x153;disastrous attempts.â&#x20AC;?

But what I find most beguiling of the Kam I myth are the mysterious omens rumored to surround his birth, foretelling his might. Legend says his mother hungered for and ate the eyeballs of nihui (tiger sharks, and perhaps even great whites), and that Haleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comet would have scorched the sky around the time of his delivery. Too, earthquakes and strange white rainbows were reported, and moi are said to have feared and loathed the one prophesied to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;the killer of chiefs.â&#x20AC;?

Today, with streets, statues and parades, you might never guess his name means â&#x20AC;&#x153;the lonely one.â&#x20AC;? Friday is his holiday and Saturday, Lahaina Town will celebrate with an annual parade and hoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;olauleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;a. Japan might be known as a nation of techies now, but even before the technological universe’s exponential expansion (Tamaguchis anyone?), the Japanese were way cooler than we ever will be. OK, maybe cool isn’t the right word… but intriguing certainly is. We teach our kids to eat cheeseburgers, while their young ones train to be ninjas. All inappropriately stereotypical comments aside, Japan deserves credit for its low-tech musical expertise also—as manifest in the form of big ol’Taiko drums. Taiko players themselves are easy to spot, as their forearms are almost as muscular as their biceps. This muscle mass isn’t for nothin’. It’s the result of and means by which musicians beat their giant drums and create resounding rhythms that can shake you to your very core. Taiko can be performed by a solo artist or in a duet, making rainy forest sounds perfect for yoga meditation. Then there’s the Taiko we hear at summer Bon Dances— fast, unified and energizing. Let me apologize, dear readers. Last week, for the sake of my ‘80s argument, I knowingly misstated that ‘90s styling is swiftly re-approaching. In fact, it’s already at the height of its comeback, as evidenced by the nauseating amount of faux flannel I see oozing out of Hot Topic. (Hey, we Kula kids—and Upcountrians one and all—have long stood by plaid’s perpetual cool and practicality. Teenie boppers would do best to leave it alone and start preparing for the return of the turn of the millennium by sewing some puffy vests.) Anyway…

If you still haven’t gotten your fill of free films, The Fuzz Box has got your fix (plus free food and surprises), with ‘90s fan fave, Dazed and Confused (1993). If you’re confused—thinking, “Wait? That movie is set in the ‘70s?”—you’re correct! But think about it: It was in the ‘90s that the ‘70s started to see some of its revival, and this Richard Linklater film was one key factor. Dazed by whatever decade, whether our attachment to fashion or our love of movies like this, the sentiments are similar to David Wooderson’s (Matthew McConaughey) love of high school girls, in that we “get older, they stay the same…”

Scared of the Dark

L

ike a punch to the skull, everything suddenly went black. As my office eMac groaned like a distant, dying whale, my desk fan offered a final, plaintive pitter.

Even the scuttle of the Blattaria B-52s ceased, and with them I stood utterly still.

Wailuku power failures are nothing new at the MauiTime office, but this was my first in the dead of night.

Alone. Even the glow of my cell phone seemed smothered and weak and the next nearest light came through the window, amber pinpricks from far across the isthmus. Eyes straining against the pure pitch, my ears labored even harder for the creak of the serial killer I was certain would charge through the door at any moment. Yes, my imagination is active—and I blame the movies.

In as quick a moment as the lights had gone out, my mind flashed every cinematic cliche. Masked accomplices snipped wires with hedge cutters while a deranged humanoid, more scar tissue than skin, lurked in the hallway ready to pounce. I’d put up an epic fight—my samurai training put finally to good use—but she’d inevitably slurp out my organs and make a cape out of my flesh. In the ink of early dawn, she’d carefully craft a mobile (showing her sensitive side) out of my bones, which she’d picked clean between her filed-sharp teeth.

Why? Not because tired journalists in need of a shower are particularly tasty, but because she was my secret, long lost, conjoined twin!

We’d been separated at birth—me being the less ugly of the two— the doctors discarding her out of superstition (this was the ‘80s, after all). Raised in the injection well underworld by mutant monk seals, she learned of ancient black magic that would restore her place in humanity (eating me, of course).

At least in death, I would both save the world and have the last laugh— because everyone knows if you eat someone with leukemia you’ll get blood cancer and die too. Her one weakness is that MauiTime does not have circ in the injection wells, or she would have read all my yammer about cancer. Boo-yah!

But seriously… Once my mental movie had played through, there was still my real-life situation. I know I am not alone in being highly incompetent in and afraid of the dark, but the degree of my ineptness

is prize-winning.

What to do? My first thought shot toward my two swords leaning up against the bookshelf. I actually ambled toward them, thinking of a waza set in darkness, where you extend the tip of the blade out to the far side of you, tap gently to mislead your opponent with sound and strike fast with a keisa cut to the jugular.

My evil conjoined twin may not exist, but airplane-sized cockroaches do.

In attempting to creep quietly toward my wooden bokken blades, I discovered I am crap at cerebral cartography. Tripping all over myself in a space I should know well, I made enough ruckus to sound as if I were being attacked—and any notion of samurai suave swiftly evaporated.

I opted instead for the worst cliché of all: calling my boyfriend.

He was in the midst of working on a real story about injection wells for our island’s daily pub, and while sympathetic to me being scared, was slightly annoyed that I was sputtering about imaginary serial killers while he was on hard deadline. But with someone on the phone I had the courage to work my way to the hall (admittedly flaring my nostrils for the slightest stench of rotting flesh).

Just then, the electricity came back on and my fan sputtered to life. The eMac beeped like a baby dolphin who’d been struck in the head by a boat.

Though no more than a few minutes had passed, I was a flood lamp of joy.

Again there was light, and it was good.

Grabbing my bag, I rushed to set the office alarm and escape as quickly as possible. There was still work to be done, but a beer and the boob tube were in order. Maybe there’d be a good scary movie on. ■

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What, ultimately, are you complaining about? What happened to not sweating the small stuff? I suspect the only reason this shit is bugging you to this degree is because you’re not keeping yourself busy enough, so your hyperactive brain is generating drama to keep you busy. Virgos require a ton of activity, and while it’s good to have some relaxation and downtime (many Virgos fail to give themselves enough), having too much leads to problems that aren’t really problems. Get busy. If you don’t have more important things to worry about than this “problem,” you probably should.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Your next best step may very well be changing from minute to minute in this dynamic situation. Don’t get too committed to one particular course of action. Because things are shifting very quickly right now, you need to be flexible, open-minded, and perceptive. Be light on your feet and ready to skip left, jump up, or turn around any second, depending on what’s thrown at you. And don’t be married to dodging those bullets.
