Press releases only tell half the story, part 8,473: This week the Neil Abercrombie camp slung some mud at Abercrombie’s Democratic opponent, Mufi Hannemann, in the form of a media dispatch about, you guessed it, the Oahu rail project. The release calls on Hannemann “to remain as mayor in the public’s best interest to ensure that Honolulu’s proposed rail project gets off to a proper start.” Nowhere is it mentioned that Hannemann abandoning his gubernatorial aspirations would also be in Abercrombie’s best interests, though I suppose it’s implied…. Speaking of Abercrombie: Last week I mentioned the upcoming special election to replace him, and the fact that some—including candidate and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa—have questioned whether we can afford the $1

million price tag. I also noted an irony: the guy who’s probably rooting hardest for the special election is the only conservative in the race, Honolulu Councilmember Charles Djou. That’s because, while Djou wouldn’t stand a chance in a head-to-head matchup with either Hanabusa or former Rep. Ed Case, he could sneak in if the two Democrats split the vote. Well, add Hawaii Republican Party Chair Jonah Kaauwai to the list of Tea Party-placating small-government advocates who’s willing to abandon his principles in the name of winning an election. “Is $1 million a lot of money? Yes it is,” Kaauwai said in a release posted on the state GOP Web site. But wait, he’s not done asking and answering rhetorical questions: “Is the Congressional representation for half of Hawaii necessary? Absolutely.” Funny thing is, though Kaauwai goes on to take predictable shots at the free-spending Dems and their union pals, he’s making essentially the same argument Case has made repeatedly. Even Hanabusa, while she’s expressed reservations about the cost, has said she understands the importance of maintaining Hawaii’s Congressional delegation. To sum up: Kaauwai is pretending the Democrats oppose the special election—a conservative position—so he can attack them for being… not conservative? My head hurts, and it’s only March…. Up until now, I’d never thought about the strain the “birthers” are surely putting on Hawaii record-keeping agencies. (If by some miracle you don’t know who the birthers are, stop reading now and take a long walk on the beach. Trust me.)

Then I read quotes in the Honolulu Advertiser from Hawaii Department of Health spokesperson Janice Okubo about how her office gets 40-50 requests for Obama’s birth certificate every month (see By the Numbers on page 7). Morbidly curious, I called Okubo to learn more. She confirmed the number and told me that because of furloughs and other cutbacks they’ve got just two staff members handling the requests

(among other, relevant duties). That’s not the worst of it: “The majority of the requests,” Okubo said with a laugh both weary and exasperated, “are coming from about four or five people.” Never mind the fact that, per state law, birth records are only available to certain people for specific reasons not including “I believe the President of the United States was born in Africa”—the birthers will not be daunted! To paraphrase Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of committed, insane citizens can make life difficult for the rest of us…. So there’s this persistent Internet meme where YouTubers take a clip from the movie Downfall, in which Hitler’s advisors bring him bad news and the Führer goes unsurprisingly apeshit, and change the subtitles to make it about other, more trivial things. (Example: “Hitler reacts to Brett Favre Playing for the Vikings.”) This week, a couple readers gave me a heads-up about “Hitler Reacts to the Hawaii Superferry,” which was posted in October 2009 by CaptainNemo999. Best line: “I waited and waited for the crowds to thin out and the prices to drop, but look at me now! I’m [screwed]!” My first thought was: Hey, this might unite folks on both sides of the issue. Then I read the bickering (some of it intelligent, to be fair) in the comments section, and I realized that not even Hitler trumps the Superferry….

The MauiTime office has fielded several calls and e-mails from residents concerned about the Census. Not so much making sure they fill it out correctly, but rather—at least in the case of one irate man—accusing a Census worker of criminal trespass.

I’ve never understood why people are so suspicious of the Census; yes, the government is gathering information about you, but if you think the only time they do that is once every ten years you are, to put it mildly, naïve. And the nice thing about the Census— as opposed to, say, warrantless domestic wiretapping—is that it actually benefits everyone. Adequate governmental representation (meaning we have an adequate number of representatives, not that the ones we have are necessarily adequate) and fair allocation of federal funds both hinge on accurate population counts. Out of Bounds Is it time to change the way we elect our County Council?

L

ess than two miles. That’s how close Gladys Baisa’s Makawao home was to the border of the Upcountry residency district when she decided to run for Charmaine Tavares’s vacated County Council seat in 2006. But it might as well have been 2,000 miles—under the current rules, a councilmember must reside in the district in which he or she runs. So Baisa rented a home in Kula and in June 2006 she registered to vote in the Upcountry district, according to records obtained from the County Clerk’s office.

What she didn’t do is remove her name from a homeowners’ exemption filed with the County Real Property Tax Division in 1997. The form listed Baisa and her husband, Sherman, and entitled the couple to a standard $300,000 exemption against the value of their home. According to the County municipal code, Baisa had to tell the assessor that she’d moved and no longer qualified for the exemption within 30 days. But she didn’t do so until December 2009—more

Teruya said the reason couples often put both of their names on the form is to keep the exemption in place should one spouse die.

Baisa confirmed that, while her husband still resides in the Makawao home, she rents a home in Kula. “I’m there every day,” she said. “I am a part of my [district].”

Asked of she’s concerned about a possible residency challenge Baisa responded “not really.” She called the Kaho‘ohalahala case “unfortunate” but added that it’s “Sol’s kuleana.”

Something Baisa was eager to discuss is changing the way the council is elected. “I think it’s a bad system,” she said flatly.

She called being forced to uproot and spend thousands of dollars in rent, all so she could represent the people of Upcountry Maui, “simply unfair.”

The current system, critics say, is designed to skirt the constitutional “one person, one vote” standard and has other significant flaws. than three years after she moved to Kula, ran for office and was ultimately elected to the council. Failure to report a change in exemption status is a misdemeanor, and carries a civil penalty of $200, plus payment of taxes owed with interest.

More than that, this would seem to be grounds for a residency and voter registration challenge against Councilmember Baisa, similar to the one that has put Lanai Councilmember Sol Kaho‘ohalahala in the headlines. In October 2009, the Supreme Court ruled against Kaho‘ohalahala on appeal, and set a stringent precedent for voter registration. Citing HRS § 11-13(4), the Court found that “both action and intent on the part of the voter [are required] before a new residence is established,” and that “[t]his necessarily implies a concurrent intent to abandon his or her prior residence, since a person can have only one residence under the statute.”

Reached for comment earlier this week, Baisa called the matter an “oversight.”

As soon as she realized her name should be removed from the form, she said, she notified the Real Property Tax office.

“I’m not looking to break the rules,” she said, “especially in my position.”

In an e-mail, Real Property Tax Administrator Scott Teruya wrote that the County code “affords every owner occupant a home exemption,” and that “whether

Baisa said she would prefer to be accountable only to the people of her district and expressed frustration at having to move a few miles to run for office, then being forced to run a countywide campaign.

“I know it’s a controversial position,” Baisa said of changing the district and voting structure. “There doesn’t seem to be a lot of support. I think people don’t want to upset the apple cart.”

aui’s current system—nine residency districts, with one councilmember elected from each district by all voters—has been around for about two decades. Former MCC professor Dick Mayer—who serves on the board of the Kula Community Association, which passed a resolution last summer calling on the council to change the election rules—said the system was put in place to give rural outliers like Lanai, Molokai and East Maui representation.

But, Mayer said, the system is designed to skirt the constitutional “one person, one vote” standard and has a few other significant flaws. First, it favors incumbents, because it’s harder for new candidates to gain the name recognition and resources to win in

CRUNCHY CHRIST Just after Christmas, the Anglican Church of St. Peter in Great Limber, England, unveiled artist Adam Sheldon’s 6-foot-high representation of the crucifixion consisting of 153 pieces of toast. MAUI IN THE MOVIES FROM FRANK SINATRA

ne of my earliest memories of Oahu was driving with my family past Kahalu, and the cab driver announcing to us that, just over the hill, Columbia Pictures had built a faux Okinawa village for The Karate Kid, Part II. I remember thinking, that’s really cool but why don’t they film more movies on Maui?

In January, Clint Eastwood filmed a small but vital part of his upcoming supernatural thriller, Hereafter in Lahaina, employing around 70 locals. When the movie is released later this year, Front Street, with the help of special effects, will be ravaged by a hurricane. I’m still waiting for someone to utilize Front Street for its romantic allure and gorgeous sunsets, but no matter—they shot a major Hollywood movie on Maui!

Of course, this isn’t the first time the Valley Isle has been visited by Hollywood.

Yes, most films and TV shows head for Oahu or Kauai; even Blue Crush, despite being based on an article titled “Surfer Girls of Maui,” was filmed on Oahu. But some eclectic and memorable productions have come to Maui.

Here’s a handful of movies that were, at least in small part, filmed here:

The Devil at 4 O’Clock (1961)

Turns out Eastwood isn’t the first filmmaker to portray Lahaina being trashed by mother nature. This adventure tale stars Spencer Tracey and Frank Sinatra as two men at odds, living on the island of “Talua,” who must save a children’s hospital from a volcanic eruption. Most of the film was shot in Lahaina, and it’s fun to watch the cast walk around Front Street, particularly by the Pioneer Inn. An added bonus: once Sinatra and crew evacuate the hospital, their trek for survival takes them to…Iao Valley! Talk about a long hike! Overall, it’s a kick to see Maui locations so recognizable, like the Iao needle, even 49 years later.

The Hawaiians (1970)

This hard-to-find but excellent sequel to James Michener’s Hawaii stars Charlton Heston and had several scenes filmed on Maui.

The film now streams for free on Hulu and is a well-rounded look at Hawaii’s darker, earlier years.

Papillon (1973)

Some of this long, tough and engrossing survival tale—starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman—was filmed in Hana. There are a few shots that are clearly Maui, but a great deal of filming was also done in Jamaica.

Baraka (1992)

Seventeen minutes into this hypnotic, wordless and stunning documentary about life on Earth, filmed in 27 countries, you get a stunning view of the Haleakala crater, shot atop Haleakala National Park.

Jurassic Park (1993) We didn’t get a whole scene filmed here, just a “plate,” or false special effects backdrop, for a scene with the T-Rex. Kauai got the rest.

Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997) In real life, the historic Battle of Kepaniwai was fought in Iao Valley and was said to have been so fierce, the river ran red with blood. At the movies, Iao Valley was the

battleground for the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers far less profound tussle with the Maligore, in which one of the Rangers offers the timeless sendoff, “Later, flame face!”

Die Another Day (2002)

The first person you see on-screen isn’t 007 but Hamilton…Laird Hamilton, surfing Peahi.

His face is covered with a diving mask but that’s definitely one of the world’s greatest surfers gliding down Jaws (Hawaii pro surfers Dave Kalama and Darrick Doerner are also listed in the closing credits). Once the scene cuts to land, the Hawaiian portion of the film ends.

In fact, on the director’s commentary, the filmmaker says with a laugh “Pierce Brosnan didn’t get to go to Maui.”

The Hulk (2003)

Ang Lee’s underrated and much-hated comic book adaptation has a single scene shot on Maui: the very last one.

The brief epilogue, in which we see what Eric Bana’s Bruce Banner is up to after destroying San Francisco, was filmed on the Kahakaloa side.

Riding Giants (2004)

A segment of this terrific documentary on the history of surfing takes place in Peahi, with Hamilton and his crew tearing up the waves. Even if you’re not into “surf movies” (and really, who are you and why the heck not?), this always-engaging and exciting doc will still thrill you.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

There’s a Maui tourism Web site that claims a scene from the third Johnny Depp adventure was shot in Pukalani. I wish! Who wouldn’t want to see Captain Jack Sparrow stop off at Pukalani Superette for a Spam Musubi? But I digress: a portion of the Disney blockbuster was filmed in Kaupo, and Molokai got the rest of the Hawaii filming.

Continued from page 11 Lahaina can also be spotted in the 1958 Rock Hudson/Cyd Sharisse melodrama Twilight for the Gods. Dinosaur had a background plate filmed (what is it with Maui providing plates for dinosaurs?) and I’m happy to clarify that, despite Web sites reporting to the contrary, the Rosie O’Donnell debacle Exit to Eden was not filmed on Maui, but Lanai (sorry, Lanai!).

On the television side, episodes of Oprah, the briefly aired remake of Fantasy Island, Perry Como’s 1985 Christmas Special, The Young and the Restless and, inevitably, Baywatch Hawaii were filmed in part or wholly on Maui.

Then there’s the “Special Hawaiian” episodes of sitcoms Step By Step and Growing Pains. In the latter, the Seaver family travels to Maui, spends all their time at a resort and Kirk Cameron’s Mike meets a local girl named Leilani, falls in love with her, tells her “I’ll never forget you” and then never mentions her again for the rest of the series.

Hollywood has been making movies in Hawaii since 1913, with the first productions being shorts titled Hawaiian Love and Maui God. Since then, surfer

classics like North Shore and Point Break, locally made gems like Picture Bride and Goodbye, Paradise and hits like From Here to Eternity and 50 First Dates have all been filmed on Oahu.

Will Maui ever be the setting of a major motion picture again? Thankfully, yes. The upcoming Adam Sandler vehicle Pretend Wife has been scouting Maui locations, although there has been no formal announcement of the Maui portion of the filming. Maui’s actors and economy could certainly use the work, and Mainland filmmakers need a change of pace from all the Canada and New Zealand productions.

I can’t wait to see Hereafter and love Eastwood’s films, but here’s hoping the next time you see Front Street in a movie, it’s not being torn to pieces. ■

hen Bada Bing closed down at the end of 2008 it was the end of a slow, expected death.Yet I always felt the location was promising. Tucked into the South end of Kihei Kalama Village, the building has a lot of character, with a wide-open Lanai area that offers views of the action on South Kihei Road, and a cozy indoor space with a big lounge in the back. So I was happy to hear some young chefs with a lot of big ideas were re-opening the spot as Three’s Bar & Grill.

The trio started out as Three’s Catering, doing some big events like Shane Victorino’s wedding and a few personal chef gigs, then decided to take it to the next step and quit their day jobs. According to Jaron Blosser, one of the chefs and the general manager: “We have three different backgrounds in culinary arts. Our idea here is to bring something to Maui that is not really being done here, but keep it simple enough to fit on one menu.

There’s a good range of items here, something for everyone. I really wanted the raw bar element because no one is doing that.”

The eclectic combination of cuisines includes Hawaiian, Southwestern and Pacific Rim. Blosser’s specialty is Pacific Rim, Cody Christopher brings the Southwestern and Maui boy Travis Morrin is the Hawaiian influence.

My recent visit to the restaurant for dinner revealed elegant plates of food, prepared expertly. The restaurant has improved the

ambiance since the Bada Bing days, with fresh, warm-hued paint and gorgeous tiger bamboo flooring. The fresh-caught mahi mahi is topped with a cucumber and mac nut relish that’s reminiscent of kim chee and gives the flaky fish a nice crunch. The honey saffron-marinated salmon with curried rice pilaf also stole my taste buds’ attention.

The pilaf is sublime in flavor and texture, a perfectly paired starch that does not compete with the flavorful salmon.

There’s a lot of avocado throughout the menu, used in relishes, salsas, salads and sushi. There’s also a raw bar, and flatbreads made with organic whole wheat. The Southwestern elements are revealed in the Cajun seasonings and the signature Three’s big wave crab boil that serves two. This is a seafood dish you won’t soon forget: mussels, crab, jumbo prawns and clams all getting cozy with Portuguese sausage, whole red potatoes and ears of corn in a Cajun-inspired broth.

Broccoli rabe graces the grouping, adding a tender green element. All the seafood was wonderful and the broth brought some powerful flavor to the delicate shellfish. I found the whole potatoes and ears of corn a bit large to negotiate with a fork, so I focused on beating the boys at the table to the seafood.

Oh and why not, let’s tack on an oyster tasting. Choices at the raw bar include penncoves and kumamoto. Penncoves I’m familiar with, and they were large and delicious here, their briny flavors dancing with a housemade wasabi cocktail. Kumamotos are smaller and have a deep-cupped shell with a plump, less fishy oyster. Both are grown in farms on the Northwest coast.

While the restaurant is planning to get their liquor license, for now it’s BYOB. Plans for developing the back area of the restaurant into a cushy lounge are also underway, and could be up and running in mid-April. Blosser, Christopher and Morrin says they’re excited to create a new social gathering area for South Maui—live music on the deck on Wednesdays is already part

oe Escalante of The Vandals is so rock star that he can’t be bothered to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. “I just pop Uncrustables out of the freezer,” he says. But who can blame the multi-tasking musician? I mean, the man is busy. This drummer-turned-bassist is also a radio host, record label owner, music video director and matador, as well as having been a television executive and entertainment lawyer.

But it’s still a pity Escalante doesn’t appreciate the culinary complexity that is the humble, homemade PB&J, since the sandwich and The Vandals share a lot in common. Musically, The Vandals combine hardcore punk rhythms (peanut butter), with fun, playful lyrics (jelly). Was that pushing the analogy? Probably.

But no matter how you look at it, The Vandals are a dynamic band. Conceived in the ’80s, they’ve toured the world extensively. (Favorite spots include, “Tokyo, Italy…and Maui, Hawaii, of course.”) They’ve performed alongside bands like A Perfect Circle and were a part of the Vans Warped Tour.

While the band’s line-up has changed since they appeared on the scene, Escalante was the first consistent member. Asked

(guitar, vocals), Josh Freese (drums) and Escalante (bass, vocals). And when these pop-punk demigods play, they want you to feel like “we didn’t play enough.” Leave them wanting more, right, Escalante?

Escalante, the youngest of seven, was first introduced to music by his family.

“I grew [up] listening to whatever they were listening to—Frank Zappa, The Who, David Bowie.” Music isn’t the only thing

‘Alice’ in Chains Underwhelming performances and a muddled plot shackle Tim Burton’s vision of Wonderland Alice in Wonderland

Rated PG/109 min.

My dad took me to see Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, my first Tim Burton film, when I was eight years old. It gave me the biggest scare I’ve ever had in a movie theater, when a character named Large Marge tells Pee-Wee a ghost story that ends with her popping her eyes out. Instead of avoiding Burton films out of residual childhood fear, I eagerly sought out every movie he made and became a die-hard fan. That won’t change, despite his latest effort, which is a colossal letdown.

This re-telling and sequel to Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s story stars Mia Wasikowska as a grown-up Alice who returns to the world beneath the rabbit hole after being forced to endure a public engagement to a man she has no interest in.

Rather than confront her potential suitor at the altar, she makes a run for “Underland,” where the White Rabbit, the Mad Tea Party

gang and a smoking caterpillar warn her about the villainous Queen of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter).

Things get off to an unpromising start, with bookend scenes set in the real world that will make children and their parents antsy. It picks up once the special effects take over, with all of the fantasy creatures vividly realized; the visuals are terrific, especially in 3-D. But really, is that even a compliment anymore? Nowadays, special effects are almost always strong, even in bad

movies like this one.

A key problem is Wasakowska. Burton must have liked her look, but her robotic performance, in which she recites each line with the exact same inflection, drags down everything around her.

Inevitably, Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter. He’s predictably offbeat and always interesting to watch, but his character and performance lack focus, as though the role was still in the workshop phase. More often than not, Depp lets the elaborate make-up

do his acting for him.

In addition to Bonham Carter’s obnoxious turn as the Queen, Crispin Glover has been cast as her sinister squeeze.

It’s a shame how Depp and Glover, two of our most original American actors, share scenes together but have nothing interesting to do. The CGI characters are fun to watch, especially the March Hare, who has unruly table manners, but they get shortchanged by the rushed first hour. The best moments briefly bring to mind the superior Disney animated version from 1951, but the two films are miles apart.

Despite the fine technical work, this is never as funny or as exciting as it should be. Even with Burton’s expected touches—a portrayal of female empowerment, eerie but accessible surrealism, misfit monsters, a solid Danny Elfman score—the film feels, well, ordinary. Domestic violence is painfully prevalent in our community, as we are reminded by the posters around town displaying slogans like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;So when I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how she felt...I asked.â&#x20AC;? The intent is to ingrain the basics of what being in a respectful relationship means in the heads and hearts of both men and women, but the plain truth is that because domestic violence is such a personal issue, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s common to keep the door shut, curtains drawn and pretend it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist. Be brave enough to reject this attitude and join in Mauiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5K and 10K fun run for domestic violence, Run Because You Want To: For Women Who Run Because they HAVE To. All proceeds benefit Women Helping Women, an organization that provides a 24-hour emergency help line, an emergency safe house and shelter and other services. The run will start and end at the Green Banana Cafe in Paia, traveling past Paia Bay and Baldwin Beach Parks for the 5K and stretching down old Stable Road for the 10K. After the race, Green Banana will provide goodies to the participants, and there should be no need to fear the heat during the race itself, as there will be both a water station and first-aid personnel on hand. Pre-register at Green Banana (10K is $25 adults, $20 under 18; 5K is $20 adults, $15 under 18). (You can also register on race day for an extra $10.) We are not a pagan, tribal community that sends offerings up to the gods during Friday night fire-lit dance rituals, while wearing carved masks and drinking herbal concoctions that cause transcendental experiences. But maybe we should be. Some tribal-esque entertainment might be just the trick to mix up the usual Maui nightlife, and nothing bespeaks tribal like the tiki. The South Shore Tiki Lounge is throwing together a tiki-inspired art show and dance party (launching a Kihei Youth Center-benefiting art exhibit, running through May). The party opens to the exotica tunes of DJ Cudra Clover, and will wrap up with DJ Joey the Wrench. As for the art, don’t expect any boring paintings of a majestic sunset over a calm ocean on this night. Work by 14 provocative artists sets the scene, including a colorful, daring painting titled “Kong Tiki” by Ron Pitts of Eh Brah! fame, as well as an actual tiki carving called “Von Krampus” by Scott Johnson. We here at MauiTime were just discussing the likelihood that our office carpet has never, ever been vacuumed. So while I apologize for always asking people to clean up (I dread being told to organize/ wash/fix/scrub/vacuum anything), I’m eco-Picking again. Why? We humans make a big fat mess, and the state of our beaches, parks and roads have more far-reaching effects than the staples in the shag.

Let’s at least lend a hand to all the little fish, plants and other creatures that we like to go snorkeling with—and chow down on. Prime opportunity: restoring the Ko‘ie‘ie fishpond with ‘Ao‘ao O Na Loko I‘a O Maui, who regularly recruits volunteers for their bi-weekly rebuilding event (held every second and last Saturday, monthly). The Ko‘ie‘ie is made in the Loko Kuapa design—with an angled rock wall and makaha (sluice gate) that allows little fish to find their way in, stay and fatten up, and then be unable to escape. Volunteers get lunch and drinks, and newcomers receive a fishpond restoration T-shirt.
