Bad Week For Literature, Civil Unions HYPER LOCAL Alexander & Baldwin offered some short-term security to its sugar employees last week, while simultaneously lobbing the latest grenade in the Maui water wars. In a January 29 release, the company announced that subsidiary Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar will continue operations through 2010, but that future plans are “subject to a favorable outcome in the water cases pending before the State Commission on Water Resource Management…”

The release goes on to tout HC&S’s “renewable energy” contribution via the burning of sugar cane remnants. Of course, as former MauiTime columnist Rob Parsons was fond of pointing out, even when sugar is being harvested, the company still burns coal as well as cane bagasse, and when harvesting goes on hiatus, it’s just coal. Makes General Manager Chris Benjamin’s statement that HC&S wants to put “greater emphasis on the production of energy” less than reassuring…. Got word from Ramoda Anand of Maui Dance Advocates that a bill—HB2818—has been introduced on the group’s behalf calling on “each county liquor commission [to] adopt or amend rules regarding the expression or conduct of patrons in premises licensed to sell liquor for consumption thereon… [and to] include a definition of the term ‘dancing.’” For those who haven’t followed the story in LC Watch, MDA—which is two guys, the wheelchair-bound Anand and Anthony Simmons, and their pro-bono attorney, Lance Collins—has been trying to get the Liquor Commission to clarify its ambiguous, Footloose-esque dancing rules for years. They went before the Commission and were denied, then tried the court, twice, and were denied. I have a suspicion the legislature may prove equally

unresponsive, but it’s impossible not to admire MDA’s tenacity….

LOCAL Now that the House and Senate have taken turns passing and killing different versions of the civil union bill, one thing is clear: the state Capitol is running a severe courage deficit. The House’s move last week—tabling the bill without a roll call vote—punctuated the legislative cowardice that has defined this debate from the beginning. Speaker Calvin Say is leaning on the supposed lack of a vetoproof majority, but that rings hollow since Gov. Lingle hasn’t made her intentions public. Sure, given her party’s position, exemplified by Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona, a veto was a distinct possibility, but why not force the issue? Because it’s an election year, that’s why, and the careers of a few asscovering lawmakers trumped civil rights.

Again…. The fight goes on: In the wake of the civil union non-vote, Lambda Legal and the Hawaii ACLU announced plans to sue the state. “Enough is enough,” said Lambda Legal rep Jennifer Pizer in a statement. “Infinite patience in the face of discrimination is irresponsible. Our clients suffer every day from unfair taxes and denial of basic legal protections…

Although same-sex couples can’t hope today for the full equality of marriage, Hawaii’s constitution still guarantees equal rights and responsibilities to everyone, gay and heterosexual alike.” Add the headlinegrabbing challenge to California’s Proposition 8 and this is shaping up to be the gay rights movement’s year in court….

For a guy who isn’t officially running for Governor, Mufi Hannemann has raised a lot of dough: $2.3 million through the end of 2009, according to a report filed this week with the state Campaign

Spending Commission. That’s $1 million more than his Democratic rival, Rep. Neil Abercrombie, and slightly more than the $2.2 million raised by Aiona.

Abercrombie is lagging, in part, because he was prevented from transferring money from his Congressional campaign coffer.

In a February 1 release, the Abercrombie campaign said it’s asking contributors to “redesignate” their donations to his Gubernatorial effort. Of course, fundraising isn’t everything; as previously noted in this space, if the Honolulu rail project stalls, no amount of money will dig Hannemann out of that public-relations hole….

Last week, the world lost two literary icons: people’s historian Howard Zinn and reclusive angst-master J.D. Salinger. But take heart—the writing world is in good hands. As first reported by ABC News, Sarah Palin’s ghostwriter’s book, Going Rogue, was a popular title at Sarah PAC, the political action committee headed up by guess who, which spent $63,000 on copies to be used for “fundraising donor fulfillment.” So Palin is taking money from donors ostensibly to forward the Tea Party/FOX News/frothing fauxpopulist agenda, using it to buy her own book and giving the book to donors (autographed!). Sounds sketchy, but apparently it isn’t illegal because Palin isn’t running for office. If you think about it, there’s really no victim here: people gave cash to Sarah Palin, and they got what they paid for. ■

Re the January 28 Mind, Body, Spirit issue: Anu Yagi’s article about the “healing touch” expresses some of the widespread misconceptions and delusions about this bizarre practice. It has been studied extensively and the results show that: 1) the practitioners cannot detect energy fields as they claim; in fact, they cannot determine whether their hands are above a live person or a corpse; 2) the recipient of the non-touch cannot tell whether the “healer’s” hands are above her body, or what part of her body they are above, without looking. The fact that Kaiser allows such practices in the clinic and hospital proves nothing. They also allow praying, chanting, astrological readings, voodoo rituals, I Ching divinations, and anything else that doesn’t harm anyone or disturb other patients. The travesty of nonhealing non-touch is that it has its origins in AIDS phobia. It started in the 1980s as a substitute for real massage when nurses were afraid to touch AIDS patients lest they contract the disease. Now that we know better we should return to the real thing. Actual human touch is far more therapeutic than this farce.

How wonderful would it be to no longer need a cure, to no longer need to worry about exposing your breast to radiation in order to detect the disease? Also mentioned in the article was the fact that in the U.S. a woman’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is 1 in 8, but another important fact is that no more than 1 in 10 women with breast cancer has a genetic history of the disease. Scientific evidence links toxic chemicals and radiation in our everyday environment to the high rates of breast cancer. An estimated 80,000 chemicals have been registered for use in the U.S. in the last 40 years, but fewer than 10 percent of them have been fully tested for their effects on human health. We must work to reduce exposures by educating ourselves, taking individual actions, demanding corporate accountability and crafting good public policies. At a time when virtually every American has been touched by breast cancer, we are long past the need for awareness. Only through a commitment to primary prevention will we reach a time when fewer people are diagnosed with breast cancer.

That is until you showed up right in the break in your motorboat (white hull with turquoise tarp in the rear) and idled your engine for what seemed like an eternity. I asked you to move away as the noise of the motor was disturbing and the diesel fumes were asphyxiating everyone. (My friend started feeling ill and had to stop surfing because of the fumes.) Instead of moving, you insulted me and stated that you had been there for three days and no one else had complained. You told me to “shut up” and other unmentionable comments. During the hospital stay Anu describes she was of course under the care of physicians and nurses. You say yourself that Kaiser allows these practices because they don’t “harm anyone or disturb other patients.” Anu says she was skeptical when the service was offered but that she did feel something and that her headache was relieved. She doesn’t claim this was a miracle or that people should forgo traditional medical assistance, only that it helped her in a small but meaningful way. Knowing Anu, I take her at her word.

TRAGIC GOVERNMENT IRONIES (1) Copenhagen, one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;greenestâ&#x20AC;? cities in the world, endured an added 41,000 extra tons of carbon-dioxide-equivalent in December during the 11-day climate summit. The 15,000 delegates required 2,000 limousines (only five of which were electric or hybrid) to get around town, and the world leaders arrived and departed in 140 private jets, some of which had to be parked overnight in Sweden because of airport congestion. (2) In December, Obama Administration officials, seeking to fulfill a campaign pledge of a more open federal government, held a multiagency training session in Washington, D.C., on the Freedom of Information Act. The meeting was closed to the public.

A NEW GIGOLO Being the first licensed male prostitute in Nevada (and thus the U.S.), explained â&#x20AC;&#x153;Markusâ&#x20AC;? in a January interview for Details magazine, is to him â&#x20AC;&#x153;a civil rights thing.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the same as when Rosa Parks decided to sit at the front [of the bus] instead of the back.â&#x20AC;?

NICE TRY, MOM In Kansas City, Mo., in December, the mother of Charles Irving tried to protect her 27-year-old son from a charge of being a felon in possession of a gun. She told police (without success) that he needed the gun to protect her from vampires.

PERVERTED COPS, PART I In November, Powhatan County, Va., prosecutors dismissed charges against five corrections officers despite evidence that they were involved in inappropriately fondling a K-9 service dog. During training, officers are expected to â&#x20AC;&#x153;bondâ&#x20AC;? with their dogs, and one of the men was seen â&#x20AC;&#x153;touching the dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s penis with his hand,â&#x20AC;? according to a prosecutor. However, Virginia law requires that the state prove â&#x20AC;&#x153;crueltyâ&#x20AC;? to the dog, and the prosecutor, after consulting with veterinarians, concluded that he could not win the case.

PERVERTED COPS, PART II

Russell Vanderwerf, 44, an agent of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was arrested in Metairie, La., in December and charged with damaging property while staying at the Residence Inn hotel. According to police, Vanderwerf had removed the bedroom door to his suite and in its place installed a plywood plank which contained a hole at about pelvis level that had been rimmed in duct tape and which the arresting deputy said appeared to be used â&#x20AC;&#x153;in some sort of sexual act.â&#x20AC;? Another guest told police that numerous young men had been entering and exiting Vanderwerfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s room.

REDNECK CRIME (1) In Morehead, Ky., in December, two men, ages 44 and 18, were charged with theft for allegedly swiping an 18-inchlong bearded dragon lizard from the Eagles Landing Pet Hospital and trying, in two beverage stores, to exchange it for liquor. (2) Daniel Gable, 61, was arrested for breaking and entering a neighborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apartment in Fargo, N.D., in December.

State of the Union The good, the bad and the ugly…

L

ast week, President Obama delivered his first State of the Union Address.

Here’s a look at what he said, and what it meant.

THE GOOD “From the day I took office, I’ve been told that addressing our larger challenges is too ambitious; such an effort would be too contentious. I’ve been told that our political system is too gridlocked, and that we should just put things on hold for a while. For those who make these claims, I have one simple question: How long should we wait? How long should America put its future on hold?”

Obama inherited arguably the most daunting set of problems of any President in history. You can fault him for the way he’s tackled them (or not tackled them), but it’s tough to blame him for refusing to prioritize some over others, especially when many of them—the wars, the economy, our dependence on foreign oil, global climate change—are inextricably linked. Speaking of those problems he inherited…

“At the beginning of the last decade, the year 2000, America had a budget surplus of over $200 billion. By the time I took office, we had a one-year deficit of over $1 trillion and projected deficits of $8 trillion over the next decade. Most of this was the result of not paying for two wars, two tax cuts and an expensive prescription drug program. On top of that, the effects of the recession put a $3 trillion hole in our budget. All this was before I walked in the door.”

Some have accused Obama of using Bush as a scapegoat to distract from his Administration’s failings (astute lip-readers caught Senator John McCain telling his colleagues, “I’m not Bush…are you Bush?” during this portion of the speech). But to know where we are and where we’re headed, we have to remember where we’ve been. It may seem like the very partisanship Obama denounced, but Republicans who rubberstamped Bush’s brazen fiscal irresponsibility and are now blasting Obama’s spending must be called on their hypocrisy.

“To Democrats, I would remind you that we still have the largest majority in decades, and the people expect us to solve problems, not run for the hills. And if the Republican leadership is going to insist that 60 votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town…then the

responsibility to govern is now yours as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership.”

This was the high point of the speech, and one that surely made all the legislators in attendance (whether they’d spent the evening clapping their hands or sitting on them) uncomfortable. Obama’s stabs at bipartisanship have mostly fallen flat, and it’s time for him to get tough—on Republicans, sure, but also on his own fickle, fragmented party.

THE BAD “We need more production, more efficiency, more incentives. And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country. It means making tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development. It means continued investment in advanced biofuels and clean coal technologies.”

Tossing the GOP a bone is understandable, but this wasn’t the spot. Nuclear power, “clean” coal and offshore drilling are the three top items on Big Oil’s wish list. By giving them a prominent place in his remarks, Obama revealed the yawning gap between the hopes the environmental community placed on him and the reality of his policies and priorities.

“I know there have been questions about whether we can afford such changes in a tough economy. I know that there are those who disagree with the overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change. But here’s the thing—even if you doubt the evidence, providing incentives for energyefficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future.”

It’s a valid point. But the time for cajoling and placating climate change-deniers is over. The smattering of boos that greeted the line weren’t enough: Obama should have publicly shamed members of Congress— like Senator James Inhofe—who insist on burying their heads in the sand, and pulling the rest of us down with them.

“We face a deficit of trust—deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap we have to take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue—to end the outsized influence of lobbyists…That’s why we’ve excluded lobbyists from

policymaking jobs, or seats on federal boards and commissions.”

The rhetoric doesn’t match reality: Before his Presidency was even a month old, Obama nominated William J. Lynn III, a lobbyist for major defense contractor Raytheon Inc., as his Deputy Secretary of Defense. And numerous other influencepeddlers—including Mark Patterson, a former lobbyist for Goldman Sachs and now chief of staff for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner—have been welcomed into the Obama Administration, provided they recuse themselves from any issue that presents a potential conflict of interest. Sounds like a palatable compromise. But according to bi-partisan fact-checker PolitiFact,org, how often these recusals take place and what, if any, documentation accompanies them is unclear, because “the White House has said little about the policy.”

“We are responsibly leaving Iraq to its people. As a candidate, I promised that I would end this war, and that is what I am doing as President. We will have all of our combat troops out of Iraq by the end of this August.”

Obama has started to withdraw troops from Iraq, but what he doesn’t mention is that thousands of “private security contractors” will remain indefinitely.

That means even as we escalate the occupation of Afghanistan, the occupation of Iraq will continue, with less transparency and accountability.

THE UGLY “If there’s one thing that has unified Democrats and Republicans, and everybody ody in between, it it’s s that we all hated the he bank bailout…”

“Obama’s Big Sellout.”) Obama may have “hated” the bailouts in the sense that they didn’t look good to the taxpayers who’d just put him in office, but they certainly weren’t hated by those in his inner circle who had just been—or, in some cases, were still—on the payrolls of Citigroup, Goldman Sachs et al. Which brings us to…

“I am not interested in punishing banks. I’m interested in protecting our economy…that can only happen if we guard against the same recklessness that nearly brought down our entire economy.”

And how, pray tell, will we guard against that recklessness? By handing banks massive, publicly funded bailouts crafted by current and former Wall Street insiders, looking the other way when they start giving their top executives huge bonuses and then promising not to punish them?

“We have gone from a bystander to a leader in the fight against climate change.”

Simply admitting climate change is real isn’t enough. To be a “leader” in the fight, the U.S. needed to arrive at the Copenhagen summit late last year with a robust, binding policy in place, so that we could pressure the rest of the developed world to follow suit and show the poor nations suffering climate change’s worst effects that we’re serious about addressing the issue. Instead, Washington couldn’t even enact a watereddown cap-and-trade system and the summit devolved into a farce, with world leaders flying off in their carbon-spewing jets, having gotten no closer to the drastic CO2 reductions scientists say are needed. Climate change isn’t all America’s fault, but we have been the world’s biggest greenhouse gasemitter and we have the clout and political capital to set a strong example. F

or 20 years, Jane Roberson has been keeping her son’s memory alive, not only in the hearts of the surfers he left behind, but also in the waves they ride.

On January 16, Roberson oversaw the 20th Annual Ho’okipa Surf Classic.

The contest began in 1990 as a way to commemorate Justin Roberson, a gifted professional surfer on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) who died in a tragic alcoholrelated traffic accident at the age of 19.

“Most everything I’ve done since then is in memory of my son,” explains Roberson.

“For as long as I can remember, Justin was a waterman. Once, when he was four years old, he did not have a board with him at Lahaina Harbor, so he dragged a log off the beach and knee paddled it out to catch waves. People in the line-up noticed and started making boards for him.” Roberson cracks a pensive smile at the memory.

Justin would take those surfboards to new heights. Along with friend and fellow competitor Christian Fletcher, Roberson was instrumental in the aerial surfing movement born out of the late 1980s. His progressive style gave him a competitive edge that won him corporate sponsorships from Quicksilver, Gerry Lopez and Da Kine.

But in the worst close-out imaginable, fate came crashing down on Roberson during his first year on the WQS, ending his dreams of becoming the first Maui boy on the World Championship Tour (a title taken

by Lahaina’s Dusty Payne in December).

It’s said that bad things come in threes: 10 years after Justin’s death, the island’s surfing ‘ohana lost another of its own, with the untimely death of 18-year-old Eric Diaz. And in 2004, legendary aerial

master Steve Cooney was killed in a singlevehicle accident at the age of 30.

“All three of these boys died too young by making poor choices,” explains Roberson. “They took chances with their lives and lost it all. But I am dedicated to keeping their memory alive. And the best way for me to do that is by taking care of the beach park they loved.”

n 2000, Roberson’s kuleana led her to become executive officer of the Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter, where she has donated countless hours to protect and preserve surf spots throughout the island.

In 2003, Maui was the first chapter in the state to implement the Blue Water Task Force, the Surfrider Foundation’s water-quality monitoring, education and advocacy program. In the same year, Roberson removed a landfill at the entrance to Ho’okipa Beach Park and used the space for a student native Hawaiian plant restoration project.

Roberson’s plant projects at Ho’okipa have won several awards, including the 2007 International Society of Arboriculture Award for Outstanding Landscape of a Public Space, the 2008 Scenic Hawaii Award for Outstanding Landscape Activities and runner-up to the Pacific Whale Foundation for MauiTime’s 2009 Best Environmental Non-Profit.

“The Surfrider Foundation has been an exemplary partner in the establishment and care of native vegetation,” says Maui County Parks and Recreation Director Tamara Horcajo. “Many groups offer to plant trees or plants in our public park areas, which is appreciated. However, the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of these

plants is difficult for our minimal park maintenance staff.”

Roberson was the philanthropic voice of the surfing community when the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) was trying to expand Maalaea Small Boat Harbor, which would have interfered with Maui’s famous “Freight Train,” the fickle behemoth of a barrel that pile-drives onto the shallow reef at Maalaea Harbor. The spot is known by surfers as “the world’s fastest wave.”

ACE sought to improve the harbor’s entrance navigation and decrease surge by building a break-wall that extended 620 feet into Maalaea’s primary swell direction, threatening the wave and 11 acres of its precious coral. With a grant written by Roberson from the Ford Foundation, Surfrider hired a marine consulting firm to review the project’s Environmental Impact Statement. The results of the firm’s study contradicted ACE’s claim that the breakwall would significantly decrease surge.

The Corps went back to the drawing board and the Freight Train chugs on—for now.

“As recently as March 2009, Ms. Roberson brought together approximately 30 representatives of the Maalaea community to openly share their concerns, issues and considerations on Maalaea with the Corps,” explains ACE biologist and project manager Cindy Barger.

“Sharing information in this format with the Corps has allowed us to better understand the community and create a more collaborative process during the development of the reevaluation report.”

She is strong-minded, determined and ran Surfrider according to her singular vision. At the end of 2009, she stepped aside as the chapter’s executive officer.

In the view of Stuart Coleman, Hawaii Coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation, Roberson “realized that the capter needed to move in a new direction.” But, he adds, “she is now working with a younger generation of leaders focusing on a wider range of issues.”

“I ran it to the best of my ability when nobody else wanted to step up as executive officer,” says Roberson, who is consulting with the new board in an ex-officio capacity.

Roberson’s plans also include starting a new non-profit, The Friends of Ho’okipa, which will oversee the fundraising and maintenance of the native plant restoration project.

The 20th anniversary of the Ho’okipa Surf Classic marked the event’s final year.

Roberson is ending the contest, hoping to spend more time with her four young grandsons: Justin, Eric and Steve (named in memory of the three lost surfers) and Rider Maka’i whose name roughly translates to surf rider.

But so much for the tragic rule of three: in 2007, celebrated Maui artist and surfer Ron Cassidy died while surfing Mexico’s Puerto Escondido. Hauntingly, Cassidy once produced a painting of Justin Roberson.

To most surfers, the only thing more hallowed than the waves we ride is our relationships with the people we love. Jane Roberson says she can’t have one without the other. “I guess I’m still a protective mother of sorts,” she says. “Doing my best to save these waves is how I continue to care for my son, and also remember the other surfers that Maui lost too soon.” ■

They serve breakfast and lunch and their misoyaki butterfish is excellent. Everything’s reasonably priced, but if you only have a few bucks in your pocket, the Maui Cattle Company Cheeseburger deluxe is the way to go. The handmade beef patty comes loaded with melted cheese, crisp lettuce, nice ripe tomato and a thick slice of onion. Simple and delicious. The dining room is cozy—just a few plastic tables and chairs.

I usually drop in and order to-go, but they informed me they deliver to anywhere in Kahului and Wailuku. Even better!

This quiche is off the hook. The first time I tried it was at Hawaiian Village Coffee and I begged the proprietor to tell me where he was getting it. Then I went straight to the source.

The filling has ham, onion and bell pepper, and the texture is so smooth, it’s more like a custard. Stillwell’s also has a side soup and roll for $4.95.

Their soup changes daily but they’re all good; the office favorite is the hearty corn chowder. Of course you’ll also probably be tempted by their island famous banana cream pie or cream horns, so you might want more than five bucks in your pocket before entering.

What in the World?

I

n the early midmorning, when there is no threat of rain, the warming ground of Wailuku town heaves up a unique smell. It’s an aged, earth-meets-industry smell—of asphalt, wood, exhaust and lava-grown green. Just the memory of that smell is enough to get you through the hot, helpless belly of the day, when the dusty hues of the office building color everything in old, tin-biscuit colors. On such an afternoon, Mike Krall of The Stuido Maui walks into my office and finds me clinging to my desktop fan.

I like seeing Krall, so I pause from my fan. He sets a pair of 2003 Grammynominee Jai Uttal’s latest releases on my desk, sliding one in particular toward me.

“This one is more MauiTime style,” he says.

“Oh! Well, if this one is more MauiTime style, what’s that one?” I ask, pointing to the other disc.

“This? It’s his latest. It’s World.” Krall pauses slightly before adding, “It’s super World.” His reply is a swirl of enthusiasm and sheepishness.

“Super World. OK… I like the sound of that.”

Our chuckle-filled chat ends and Krall departs. I stick my head back in front of the fan. The blades catch and chop up my words, as I repeatedly roll over that funny phrase: super world… super world… I like it. It’s a fun phrase—maybe even a mantra.

As for the use of the word “World” as a genre of music, I’m unconvinced. Or, more than unconvinced, I’m confused.

W

hat exactly is World music?

Here’s my limited impression: the music you push your cart to in health food stores; the stuff they pipe into boutiques smelling of sage; the satellite radio station in galleries and fancy kitchenware shops. Fine, but not necessarily for me.

Nonetheless, I’m open. Uttal is one of the biggest names in the biz and sells out show after show—as his prior Maui appearances have, and assuredly the two forthcoming will. There’s got to be something to it.

For Uttal specifically, I’m catching up on an over 20-year career. Meanwhile—for the very first time—probing my views of the genre he’s credited with pioneering.

Daunting, yes. But, I’ve got a pretty good toolbox. Notably, a phone interview with Uttal from his from his California home, after which he personally mails to me a twodisc set titled Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant (2003). Add that to the “more

MauiTime” Dial M for Mantra (2007) and the “super World” Thunder Love (2008), and I’ve got a nice spread of releases for review.

Not to mention streaming audio of all his work, from his site.

I listen thoroughly—much of it played multiple times, on various players (Uttal is partial to a good sound system, “if you’re really listening”). What I hear generally supports my impressions, but of highquality execution, thanks to Uttal’s musical prowess and the uniqueness of his multiinstrumentalism. His work is clearly accented by the influences Uttal speaks fondly of— notably Indian and Brazilian, dashed with “old-timey Appalachian.” Though there’s undoubtedly strong crossover to New Age (whatever that is, too), he possesses an unguardedly hip colloquial, and his band is called the Pagan Love Orchestra.

With Kirtan!, the essence of his music— and spirituality—is most evident. Kirtan itself is a musical practice that in repetition invokes the names of Indian deities. Best live, it is music that is highly participatory, experiential for the audience. Though I’m not a fan of the second track—a flowery monologue of kirtan and its practice—I love the explanatory liner notes, and stories Uttal shares of his experiences with gurus of the East.

With Dial M for Mantra, the element of the industry’s “whole DJ culture… [the] world of taking someone’s music and reexamining it,” as Uttal says, is manifested. It’s my least favorite album—there are too many elements layered at length. I ask if there are any particular challenges with relinquishing his music to reinvention by someone else’s hand. Collaboration, Uttal says, is always an exciting challenge (he speaks highly of everyone he’s worked with). As for the remixes, he says that “because the albums were complete, they were out in solid form,” it wasn’t so much an issue.

In the “super World” Thunder Love, I find

the biggest divergence—and what I don’t initially like grows on me. Uttal says the album—which took two years to record—is “an expression of who I am and where I am now, an attempt to really open myself.” He speaks abundantly (as in all matters) about the influence of his Brazilian wife, Nubia and their five-year-old son, Erza, to who he dedicates the album, referencing to me the “joy of meeting your soulmate” and the “thrill of having a child.” These elements translate strongest in the album. It bears a warmth and paternal earnestness that is sweet and ‘ohana friendly, which makes Uttal’s next planned project—a kids’ album—fitting.

et for all this, I’m still uneasy about my understanding of World music.

Time to turn to a new source.

“The term is a catchall that commonly refers to non-Western music of any and all sorts, popular music, traditional music and even classical music. It’s a marketing as well as a pseudomusical term,” writes musician David Byrne in a 1999 The New York Times article titled “I Hate World Music.”

“In my experience,” writes Byrne, “the use of the term world music is a way of dismissing artists or their music as irrelevant to one’s own life… Maybe that’s why I hate the term. It groups everything and anything that isn’t ‘us’ into ‘them.’”

And he’s right. It would have been so much easier for me to say something to the effect of: “Hey! A renowned, New York-born musician is coming to Maui. Raised in the music industry, he’s mastered a bevy of wild, international instruments and is primarily influenced by some fascinating, spiritual experiences abroad. Over the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Edgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Mel Gibsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in ďŹ ne form, but the relentless carnage is ho-hum Edge of Darkness

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big question this movie presents and it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t whether an emotionally shattered cop, played by Mel Gibson, can find out who killed his daughter. The far more pressing uncertainty is whether, following a nearly eight-year absence from the screenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;during which time he directed two successful but masochistically violent historical epics and exhibited behavior thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s made him one of the most controversial movie stars aliveâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;audiences will except Mel Gibson back as a leading man. My guess is they will, since Gibsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grim, commanding lead performance is the best thing about this familiar and exceptionally nasty film from director Martin Campbell.

Gibson inflicts physical destruction on whoever stands in his way on his quest for the ugly truth and, even with movies as old as Death Wish or as recent as Taken playing

out this â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Madâ&#x20AC;? genre, the carnage is turned up to 11. The abrupt jolts of violence are so severely cruel and graphically depicted, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know whether to be appalled or impressed. Not since the recent Rambo have I heard an audience frequently yell out a pained â&#x20AC;&#x153;ohhh!â&#x20AC;? in disbelief and desensitized astonishment.

The story is based on a 1985 British miniseries (from the same director) and wants to be a layered, drawn-out morality drama.

Instead we get a by the book, wronged-managainst-the-world revenge flick.

a shadow figure and, great actor that he is, his cockney accent and muted approach to the part feel out of place. The role is more a plot device than anything else, but Robert De Niro, who was originally cast in the part, could have brought more finesse. Danny Huston is fine as a creep in a three-piece suit, but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a solid character actor who is starting to get typecast in these roles. As for Gibson, this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one of his inventively â&#x20AC;&#x153;loonyâ&#x20AC;? turns, like Hamlet or the Lethal Weapon; he internalizes his characterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing madness and while this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one of his casually brilliant performances, his eyes

can still convey both fatherly warmth and scary obsession.

Campbell found the right leading man and stages some memorable carnage, but in the end this a cold, seen-it-before B-movie that begins with a shocking act of violence, drags on with awkward sentiment and only springs to life whenever Gibson starts bumping off large portions of the ensemble cast.

Gibsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still got it, even when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sporting an on-again, off-again Boston accent and saying lines like â&#x20AC;&#x153;You had better decide whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hanginâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the cross...or banginâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the nails,â&#x20AC;? a peculiar, even tasteless choice of dialogue coming from the man who directed the most successful movie about Jesus ever made.

Gibsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next stop on the comeback trail: a comedy directed by Jodie Foster called The Beaver, about a man who lives life wearing a beaver hand puppet. Their latest is titled Splendor in the Grass, clever too as their name evokes splendor in a glass. But let’s quit skimming off the top-Pink Martini downright rocks. “Pink Martini is a rollicking around-the-world musical adventure … if the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully we’d be that band,” writes Thomas Lauderdale, bandleader and pianist of the eleven member ensemble. And while I hate to pull from other journo’s work, Variety did a darned-good job saying, “no matter how Pink Martini gets described, there’s always an element being overlooked, a reliance on phrases such as lounge, cosmopolitan rumba or neo-classical, that only tells part of this rich story. Impressive at every musician’s station, this ensemble produces music that’s charming and elegant.” General public tickets go on sale Thursday (Feb 4), so hurry and get yours. Ooh!
