Last week, I humbly asked tourism officials to stop flogging the aloha spirit as though it were a magic visitor-attracting switch that can be flipped at will. But they’re not the only ones tossing the phrase around.

In a November 16 press release about the Countywide Plan, Councilman Sol Kaho‘ohalahala included “emphasize the importance of the Aloha Spirit” as the last in a series of bullet points (most of the others were related to specific stuff like building codes and renewable energy). To reiterate: I’m not against the aloha spirit; I think it’s a (potentially) cool concept. The problem is it’s too vague, or, more accurately, has been flagrantly misused. Here’s what I mean: Do a Google search for “aloha spirit” and see what comes up. One of the first hits I got was a sweet little acrostic poem credited to Auntie Pilahi Paki: “Akahai, meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness/Lokahai, meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony/Olu’olu, meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness/Ha’aha’a, meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty/Ahonui, meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance.” Right under that? Info about the “Spirit of Aloha dinner show” at the Walt Disney World resort. I’m willing to believe the County was referring to the poem in its press release. But I’m pretty certain the Disney version is more what the Visitors Bureau has in mind….

LOCAL Want to know where the Furlough Friday saga stands now that Gov. Lingle has proposed dipping into the “rainy day” fund? (A move Lingle defended by saying “it’s raining on the kids now,” though perhaps a different liquid would be more apropos.) Take it away state Board of Education Chair Garrett Toguchi, quoted in a November 21 AP dispatch: “We have a pre-agreement agreement.” In the same report, Senate President Colleen Hanabusa claims she’s had multiple teachers tell her they didn’t know the deal they voted on would cut instructional days, which could mean several things, all of them bad. Honestly, assigning blame here is so easy there’s really no sport in it.

So how about revaluating the resource-sucking practice of putting more than 100,000 trees in refrigerated boats and shipping them across the Pacific, so they can be placed in people’s living rooms for a few weeks and then discarded. One of them is “institute a global Marshall Plan,” a reference to the rebuilding of post-World War II Europe. Now, Lillard and Scherer argue, we have to “bail out the developing world.” But some use a different, more loaded word: “reparations.” A November 11 Rolling Stone article titled “Climate Rage” outlines the argument: The developed nations (most notably the United States) created the crisis, while the rest of the world is facing the worst consequences.

According to reparation proponents, vague assurances and strings-attached aid aren’t enough. Earth: Too Big to Fail?

The upcoming summit in Copenhagen might be our last chance to get serious about climate change.

Here are four suggestions to save the world

W

hen our economy tanked last year, politicians told us that our nation’s financial institutions were “too big to fail.” Now, as world leaders prepare for a critically important climate summit in Copenhagen, we need to ask: Is Earth too big to fail?

by many as inadequate. What’s needed immediately are fresh ideas that will break the logjam before Copenhagen—a great and radical compromise that deals decisively and honestly with the climate change threat, but also allows the fossil fuel industry, and the rest of the U.S. and world economy,

These proposals will likely anger many. But sticking with the current crop of platitudes is getting us no closer to a solution.

You know the back-story: scientific studies pile up monthly warning of a potential collapse of our planet’s human life support systems. Most recently, researchers calculated that the Arctic icecap—one of Earth’s largest geographic features—could disappear in ten summers. That meltdown might unleash global weather changes that destabilize agriculture in a world where a billion people already go hungry, thereby threatening food riots and fanning the fires of global terror.

Meanwhile, UCLA scientists have looked back 20 million years to find atmospheric carbon dioxide levels as high as today.

Global temperatures then were 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit higher. Sea levels were 75 to 120 feet deeper. And Antarctica was nearly ice-free. Clearly, we are reshaping our “planet into something we have never seen in all of human history,” says climatologist Jonathan Foley.

Still, a Senate climate bill remains stalled, and its cap-and-trade mechanisms are seen

Repurpose petroleum. Oil isn’t renewable. Every barrel we burn for energy is wasted—it’s like burning money. Rather, let’s transition from using oil as fuel and turn it into high-quality plastics and other durable goods. Let’s fund research into next-generation plastics and other petrochemical-based materials designed for reuse in an endless loop. Already, scientists at the University of Washington are using

to thrive. Such a compromise is possible, though its provisions will likely cause environmentalists and fiscal conservatives alike to fall out of their chairs.

Here are four bold measures for breaking the climate deadlock: Put tens of billions into clean-coal.

Coal largely powers our nation. That is current reality. And clean coal is still a fantasy, but not long ago so was a trip to the moon. Money is the answer. It is already technologically possible to remove 90 percent of the carbon from coal emissions. However, according to a July 2009 Harvard study, this thorough carbon-cleansing nearly doubles the cost of making electricity. So why not offer federal loans to energy producers to cover the difference? A carbon tax would pay back that loan. It can be done: Norway is already sequestering carbon beneath the North Sea, and sequestration sites are being identified across America. This is no permanent

Unless we bring the poor out of poverty through clean energy, all of the developed world’s carbon emission reduction efforts will go for naught. Exporting sustainableenergy technologies to the developing world will help end poverty and dramatically boost our economy. When the U.S. rebuilt Europe and Japan after World War II, skeptics called it economic suicide. Today the U.S.-EuropeanJapanese trading partnership is the strongest, freest economic engine the world has known.

Likewise, investment in Africa today will create thriving free markets there tomorrow.

Adapt now. No matter how successfully we implement the first three steps, too much greenhouse gas is already aloft. We must prepare for some climate-caused upheaval.

Intensive cooperative public-private planning is needed to anticipate the extreme weather, sea rise, wildfire, insect, disease and other damage done by climate change.

Impossible? Not in the America we know. ■

Climate Change: How Will it Impact Hawaii?

n June, the White House released a report titled Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States. More than a dozen government agencies and several universities and research teams collaborated on the report, which was an overdue follow-up to a 2000 climate change assessment that the Bush Administration tried to suppress.

The report breaks down the impacts of climate change by region; here are a few key areas where Hawaii will be affected: Less fresh water: “Most island

communities in the Pacific and Caribbean have limited sources of freshwater. Many islands depend on freshwater lenses below the surface, which are recharged by precipitation. Changes in precipitation…are thus a cause of great concern. Sea-level rise also affects islands water supplies by causing saltwater to contaminate the freshwater lens and by causing an increased frequency of flooding due to storm high tides. Water pollution (such as from agriculture or sewage), exacerbated by storms and floods, can contaminate freshwater supplies, affecting public health.”

Stronger storms: “With further warming, hurricane and typhoon peak wind intensities and rainfall are likely to increase, which, combined with sea-level rise, would cause higher storm surge levels.”

Loss of endangered species: “Flooding will become more frequent and coastal land will be permanently lost as the sea inundates low-lying areas and the shorelines erode. Loss of land will affect living things in coastal ecosystems…[T]he Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, which are low-lying and therefore at great risk from

rising sea level, have a high concentration of threatened and endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else.”

Decimation of coral reefs: “Coral reefs are particularly sensitive to the impacts of climate change as even small increases in water temperature can cause coral bleaching. Riding Life’s Big Waves

hris was unflinchingly garrulous and outspoken. Rolling a piano through the Ritz-Carlton’s hallways in Kapalua, it seemed as though he knew almost everyone employed there.

Over time, he worked at Leilani’s and Pineapple Hill restaurants, Drexel Brothers Construction and helped stage events with Ehman Productions, Showpower and ESPN. Chris worked as a production assistant on Xterra, the Mercedes Championship at Kapalua, Kaanapali Classic, Skins Games at Wailea and the Sony Open on Oahu, and was also involved in TV and feature film projects.

His best friend, Blythe Douglas, met Harstad 20 years ago, playing Frisbee on Kaanapali’s Dig-Me Beach. They often bodysurfed and enjoyed freestyle beach Frisbee together, and Douglas reached out to help Chris with medical appointments or other obligations so he wouldn’t have to depend on the MEO bus schedule.

“Harstad was famous for quoting, ‘If

you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything,’” said Douglas. “He was grateful for just the simplest things in life. We are grateful to have had him in our life. He was family to us.”

It often took Harsted days to recover after a grand mal seizure. Some years back, I saw Chris for the first time in several months.

He had suffered a seizure while cooking at home, and his entire forearm was scarred from second-degree burns.

In late 2004, I lent my Ford F-250 truck, “Big Blue,” to a friend for a weekend move. In a lapse in judgment with dramatic consequences, he asked Harstad to drive my truck while he drove his own.

Watching a Sunday morning football game on TV, I was interrupted by a frantic phone call. Rushing to the scene in my wife’s car, I arrived at North Kihei Road to find police, ambulance, my friend sitting at the roadside with his head buried in his hands and my truck crumpled into a beachside kiawe tree.

Harstad had slipped into a seizure while driving, rear-ended a few cars, crossed the center-line and drifted off the road. While the truck was totaled, amazingly Harstad escaped with minor injuries.

His bicycle was his preferred mode of transportation, and he rode daily. He was adamant about protecting bicyclists by ensuring that cars didn’t encroach in designated bike lanes, sometimes yelling at those who did. “I told him he was a Bike Nazi, you know, like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld,” his brother Mike told me. “He just laughed at me.”

Bicycling on the curving road near Honolua Bay a few years back, a vehicle swerved into Harstad’s bike lane and nearly hit him. He hollered at the driver, who stopped, got out and came at him with a machete. With traffic stopped, Harstad managed to put the attacker in a headlock, at which point the driver’s girlfriend came out and started kicking him. Matters were settled in court some months later.

Mike came back to Hawaii in July 2005, when Chris underwent complicated brain surgery in Honolulu to try to control what prescription drugs could not. Symptoms may be controlled by medication for many with epilepsy, wrote Claudine San Nicholas in a Maui News feature about Harstad’s operation.

But Chris fell into a smaller percentage, roughly one-third, whose maladies were not abated. Thus, Chris was willing to undergo a lobectomy, or temporal lobe resection, after extensive testing to locate the area of the brain responsible for his seizures.

West Mauian carved his own niche, despite hardships he business card he handed me many years ago read, “West Maui Big Kahuna,” fitting for the tall, athletic Colorado native who moved to Maui in 1988, following an older brother who lived in Lahaina. I met Christopher Harstad during my previous incarnation as owner/ operator of Grand Wazoo Piano Moving, and he often helped provide muscle for deliveries. Chris would always arrive by bicycle, always shirtless. In fact, Chris never owned a car, and with good reason.

Soon after arriving on Maui, Harstad had his first epileptic seizure. Initially, he experienced them once or twice a month.

But despite medication, their frequency increased to two or three times weekly.

His illness made it challenging for him to hold steady employment and provide for himself. Yet he lived with great passion— for educating others about his disease, for advocating bike lane safety and for beach and ocean sports.

Chris Harstad died earlier this month after suffering another seizure. In an emotional memorial service two weeks ago, family and friends waded into the shore break at D.T. Fleming’s beach—his favorite bodysurfing spot—to spread his ashes.

“Chris really connected with Maui, really loved it there,” said brother Mike, who built custom homes on the Valley Isle before moving to Washington state. Chris was the seventh of nine kids, and Mike said he got into a bit of trouble before moving to Maui.

“He was sort of the black sheep,” said Mike.

The Maui News article was accompanied by a photo of Harstad, broadly smiling, with his dark hair shorn in a buzz cut and 40 metal staples in a large upside-down U-shaped incision above his left ear. Harstad was optimistic about a better life following the surgery—but it was not to be.

wo years ago, Chris finally received a full Social Security disability judgment for his illness. He also found help through Section 8 housing, and the Food Stamps program. He applied for and received a medical marijuana card to help moderate strong side effects from his anti-seizure medicine, but could not maintain the cost.

Chris called me periodically over the past year, imploring me to write a story helping to educate police and first responders about medical alert bracelets.

Apparently, he had a post-seizure event where he left his home one night disoriented and unclothed, and was tasered by police, who must have thought him to be on drugs and dangerous.

Chris was deeply upset by this event. He didn’t want to condemn the Maui Police Department for what happened, only to shine a light on the special needs of those who wear medical ID bracelets.

“He wanted to make sure the police were aware of this issue,” said brother Mike. “He designed a poster with a peace sign on it, and he wanted it posted in the MPD locker room.”

He wanted badly for his side of the story to be told, added Douglas, and to emphasize that taser guns should not be abused.

I told Douglas I felt a bit guilty I hadn’t always returned Chris’s messages, or found time to bring his story into print—until now. “I think we’ve all felt that way at some point,” Douglas replied. “Lately [his wife] Clarissa and I asked ourselves, ‘did we do enough?’”

As we gather with our ‘ohana for Thanksgiving, we can be grateful for many things, including good health. And as waves thunder from the first big ocean swell of the season, you can bet that riding on one of them is the spirit of the West Maui Big Kahuna, Christopher Harstad. ■

The first line of “defense” at the 400 Iraqi police checkpoints in Baghdad are small wands with antennas that supposedly detect explosives, but which U.S. officials say are about as useful as Ouija boards. The Iraqi official in charge, Maj. Gen. Jehad al-Jabiri, is so enamored of the devices, according to a November New York Times dispatch, that when American experts repeatedly showed the rods’ failures in test after test, he blamed the results on testers’ lack of “training.” The Iraqi government has purchased 1,500 of the ADE 651s from its manufacturer, ATSC Ltd. of the UK, at prices ranging from $16,000 to $60,000 each. The suicide bombers who killed 155 in downtown Baghdad on Oct. 25 passed two tons of explosives through at least one ADE-651-equipped checkpoint.

Daredevil Scottish stunt bicyclist Danny MacAskill, whose electrifying feats are featured on popular YouTube videos, suffered a broken collarbone in October when he tripped on a curb while out for a walk in downtown Edinburgh.

WHEN JEBEDIAH MET SALLY “Bonnet books” are a “booming new subcategory of the romance genre,” reported The Wall Street Journal in September, describing “G-rated” Amish love stories that sell well among outside readers but have found an even more avid audience among Amish women themselves.

Re the November 19 feature â&#x20AC;&#x153;Invasive Speciesâ&#x20AC;?: In the past, Maui has tried the â&#x20AC;&#x153;eradicationâ&#x20AC;? option of euthanizing as many feral cats as the Humane Society and volunteers could catch, but the feral population didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go downâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in fact it increased. The feline evolutionary instinct senses population deceases and their reproductive patterns become heightened. Killing them off will only end up increasing their numbers. It sounds strange but has been scientifically proven in many areas of the U.S. and Europe where this same issue is happening. The most important, vital thing that we can do for the humans and the cats is to actively donate and volunteer to programs like 9th Life, Feline Foundation and Maui Humane Society (feral feline sector) to help spay and neuter as many feralâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and tameâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; cats as possible. These organizations will provide you with traps to borrow and help you get the cats spayed and neutered for free. There seems to be more people that sit back and complain about this problem than actual participants helping to fix it. Please get educated and involved to help our situation!

Everyone will benefit in the end.

Cats carry the same diseases as rats (and some other ones, too) and are destructive, filthy wild animals that are devastating our bird populations. Those who feed and shelter feral cats are nothing more than cat hoarders who make their neighborsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives miserable. They have to be stopped.

Humanely kill these pests, and mandate that all cats must be spayed and neutered until we get this scourge under control.

Ynez responds: Thanks for pointing that out. I felt terrible for writing that women were slaves in the kitchen only during the holidays. It sickened me to use that overused stereotype. What I wanted to write was that in developed countries, two-thirds to three-quarters of domestic work is performed by women. Women do

between 75 and 95 percent of all meal prep and cleanup. This work is, of course, unpaid and usually done after having worked all day. But then I would have been over my word count. Finally, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so gross about implying that a woman should go ahead and spend some of her hard-earned money on herself.

A

sk the average man on the street what charity he’s supporting this year, and the answer you’ll almost certainly get is: “me.” Things are tough—as you don’t need to be reminded—and most of us are circling the wagons, focusing on our own wellbeing.

And yet, in these lean times, local charities and nonprofits need help more than ever. It’s a cruel irony that as demand for their services increases, generosity dries up.

So—if you can, give. It doesn’t have to be a huge chunk of cash (though nobody’s gonna turn that down). It could be a few cans of soup, some forgotten item shoved in the corner of your garage or just a few hours of your time.

A little altruism won’t undo the global financial meltdown. But it could rescue a stray cat, give a kid a safe place to go after school, get someone off drugs or help your neighbor cook a Thanksgiving dinner. And that might be even better. ➔

Gobble, Gobble Want to eat out this Thanksgiving? You’ve got a plateful of options

T

ryptophanatics rejoice—it’s turkey time. And while for many that means staying home all day cooking, others opt for the easier route and let someone else do the work.

If you fall into the latter group, check out one of these choice options.

Mulligan’s on the Blue is featuring a buffet for $25 from 4-8pm. Their traditional turkey will be served with butternut squash and seafood bisque, as well as a green bean almondine. They top it off nicely with apple crisp and haupia.

Moana Cafe has an all you can eat buffet for $26.95—$9.95 for keiki, and 6 and under are free—that starts at 3pm and seats ’til 7pm. Plenty of roasted turkey and such on the menu, but some of the things that got me excited are the sweet potato croquets, pumpkin lumpia and the German chocolate cake. The bakery is always incredible, and the subtly Asian-influenced flavors can’t be beat.

The King Kamehameha Golf Club brunch starts at 10am and costs $39 for adults, kids half price, 5 and under free.

The pupus alone are impressive, with shrimp cocktail, sushi, smoked salmon, cheese and fruits. They also have quite an array of salads.

Their meats include roast turkey, prime rib, pork loin, shortribs and mahimahi, while pumpkin pie, cream pie, creme brulee and cheesecake grace the dessert table. Take it all in with breathtaking Haleakala views.

Tiki Terrace Buffet starts at 11am for $38.95, kids 6-12 $22. Dinner seating is 3:30-7pm. Kaanapali Beach Hotel’s all you can eat buffets are infamous with the locals, and this is no exception, with Hawaiian music and hula between 5-7:30pm.

TURKEY ALTERNATIVES Makawao Rodeo General starts serving turkey at 10am; their turkey dinner is $10.99, or you can get all of the fixin’s premade and by the pound, from butternut squash soup to prime rib. For the meataverse, they offer an arugula lentil loaf dinner, served with mashed potatoes, green beans almondine, cranberry sauce and a roll.

Mala Wailea will be serving a diverse buffet that offers the non-turkey lover some refuge. Many Asian and Mediterranean

turkey and citrus-glazed ham at the carving station. Starts at 3pm with an early seating for $44.50, $25 for 12 and under, and from 5-9pm, $49.50, $27 for 12 and under.

Meanwhile, Stella Blues serves up a traditional menu with a twist—fresh opah lettuce cups and Waldorf salad, plus hummus with crab-stuffed mahi and veggie stir-fry.

Lulu’s Kihei has a three-course traditional dinner for $19 that features some nice island style touches like Kalua turkey, pineapple cranberry sauce and Portuguese sausage stuffing.

Ruth’s Chris in Lahaina and Wailea will be serving their traditional Thanksgiving three-course repast, starting with crab chowder or house salad, followed by the roasted turkey plate. Their pre fixe dinner is $45, $19 for 12 and under.

RB Black Angus in Kahana is serving a three-course dinner for $24.95, while Canoes will offer up a three-courser with seating starting at 3pm for $35.95.

TRADITIONAL TURKEY PLATES It’s an Irish pub feast at Dog and Duck—

Lahaina Grill opens a half-hour early to seat for Thanksgiving and serves their usual menu, but will be offering an amazing turkey plate with cranberry relish, yam and Brussels sprouts for $41.

The Turducken feast for $10 at Mulligan’s at the Wharf is bound to be all kinds of fun, with the centerpiece being that unholy, delicious matrimony of turkey, duck and chicken.

Beach Bums Bar and Grill is serving turkey and other meats from their smoker for $18.95 with all the fixin’s.

Meanwhile, Hyatt’s got sustainable turkey—organic birds from Diestal Farm in Sonoma, California, served at Umalu, Cascades Drums of the Pacific. Finally, head out on the water with the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Thanksgiving cruise, setting sail from Lahaina Harbor. ■

How not to BBQ a turkey

O

n Maui, where balmy weather never quits, the prospect of cooking your Thanksgiving turkey outdoors—and thus avoiding turning your house into an ovenheated inferno—is appealing.

The obvious choice is the barbeque, especially if you’ve got access to a nice gas grill. But beware: the journey to a perfectly BBQ’d bird is littered with unseen hazards that can make the centerpiece of your feast a charred, inedible blob or, worse, a genuine hazard.

Here are a few tips to help you avert disaster:

DON’T fire up all your burners. If your grill has multiple sets of burners, use only one side. Otherwise, you’ll wind up with a half-burned, half-raw turkey that’ll cause even the dog to turn up his nose.

DON’T shove a huge bird into a tiny barbeque. It’s important for your turkey to have adequate room to heat evenly and be rotated easily; you also need to be able to completely close the lid to keep the grill temperature consistent (about 350 degrees).

DON’T leave the grill unattended.

Fat is highly flammable and can drip onto the burners, causing your Butterball to morph into a raging fireball. Always stay close and look for warning signs (loud sizzling, excessive smoke), and have a hose or fire extinguisher handy just in case.

DON’T overdo it. The temptation to kill meat-borne illnesses is understandable, but no amount of gravy can compensate for leathery, dried-out meat. Stick a thermometer about an inch into the breast, and when it reads 165 degrees, you’re good to go. - Jacob Shafer

don’t think Little Orphan Annie and I would get along. People with her kind of optimism and unwavering belief in the innate goodness of humanity have always unnerved me. It’s not that I’m a pessimist; I consider myself a realist. My glass isn’t half empty—it’s in a cold, dark room curled up in the fetal position. If it’s true that “you’re never fully dressed without a smile,” then I go out naked a lot.

But maybe in this hard knock life, a little Annie is what we need. And Maui OnStage and the Maui Academy of Performing Arts are here to give it to us. Of course, part of the play’s charm is its location.

Something about the Historic Iao Theater tells you, “I think I’m gonna like it here.”

Vampire Weakened New ‘Twilight’ film doesn’t suck as bad as the first one. But it still sucks New Moon

year ago, I gave Twilight a generous one-star review, which inspired a teacher at Kihei Charter School to urge his class of young students to write me a response, which they did.

I was informed that the MauiTime inbox received an outpouring of e-mails, all of them passionate and most declaring that I was wrong about their movie. Among the highlights: “Just because you’re a critic doesn’t mean you have to be so critical!” and “If you have never made a movie, you are in no position to be criticizing the special effects!” My favorite came from possibly the lone boy in the class, who wrote: “You are an awesome critic and your review on Twilight is awesome.” I appreciated each of their comments to no end and I went into the sequel with an open mind…only to be let down again.

A year later, Edward the vampire (Robert Pattinson, still resembling an undead James Dean) decides to break up with Bella (Kristen Stewart), who turns to her friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) for comfort, only to

find he has a big, hairy secret.

The director this time is Chris Weitz, who has made some improvements over the genuinely bad original: instead of every scene shot in an ugly blue filter, the cinematography is lush and beautiful. The composer has changed and the score is now lyrical instead of dull. And the special effects are excellent. Unfortunately, all the other problems are the same, making this a different kind of bad movie: one that occasionally makes you think it will find its footing, but that falls off the cliff instead.

Stewart is a big reason why these films don’t work—her one-note, nearly emotionless performance is like a black hole that sucks the life out of everything around it. Pattinson has a much smaller part this time, but his goofy brooding and slow-motion walks are still unintentionally hilarious. Lautner is the most appealing of the trio, though his acting is as sub-par as everyone else’s.

The pacing is more slack than before.

The third act, which takes place in Italy, is

supposed to be the film’s highlight. It’s not.

Without giving away any of the story, we get an encounter with additional vampires, a fight scene that looks like an outtake from The Matrix, Dakota Fanning in a weird cameo and a lot of vampire dialogue that sounds like imitation Anne Rice.

I liked the two scenes set in a movie theater, which not only tease bad action movies but the current craze of zombie flicks. The rumble between two monstrous beasts is as exciting as the polar bear battle in Weitz’s The Golden Compass. And the cliffhanger ending will cause lots of intheater swooning. But in the end, Twlight has a long way to go.

On the other hand, the theater I saw this in (which had only one other male present) was full of women, young and old, who cheered enthusiastically whenever one of the young studs got a close-up or took off his shirt. OLD DOGS - PG - Comedy - Old fogies Robin Williams and John Travolta find themselves in charge of 7-year-old twins. I was gonna call this a low point for both actors, but then I remember Battlefield Earth and License to Wed. And then my head exploded. 88 min.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX - PG - Animation - Quirk master Wes Anderson gives Roald Dahl’s underappreciated children’s book the stopmotion treatment, with George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray among the impressive voice cast. 87 min.

Now Showing 2012 - PG - Thriller - A turn of the Mayan calendar wreaks global special effects-aided havoc, in what is sure to be every doomsday buff’s volcano-erupting, tidal-waving crashing wet dream. John Cusack and Woody Harrelson are among the large ensemble cast. 158 min.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL 3D - PG - Family Dickens’ tale of apparition-induced Yuletide redemption gets the CGI treatment, with Jim Carrey providing multiple voices. Of course, the last time Jim Carrey was involved in a film version of a classic children’s book, the result was The Grinch. But we’ll hold out hope. 96 min.

A SERIOUS MAN - R - Comedy - Academy Award winning directors Joel and Ethen Cohen darkly comedic exploration of Judiasm insights to Life’s Big Questions.

EVERYBODY’S FINE - PG13 - Comedy Robert De Niro plays a widower who goes on a holiday road trip to drop into the dysfunctional lives of his grown children. No word on whether he brings his lie detector and potty-trained cat.

According to comedian Gabriel Iglesias, there are six levels of fatness. From lightest to heaviest they are: big, healthy, husky, fluffy, DAMN! and OH HELL NO! Is this a step toward size acceptance, or a form of sizeism? See, this is why no one ever invites me a comedy showâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;instead of giggling as Iglesias relates how a little dancing makes him sweat, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m wondering if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s making a statement about how American culture does not cater to the needs of larger people.

When Iglesias tells his audience that hearing his girlfriend coo â&#x20AC;&#x153;chocolate cakeâ&#x20AC;? over the phone works like phone sex, I wonder if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aggressively mocking himself to soften the mocking of others, or if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just trying to get a laugh. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know. But people with a sense of humor tell me that Iglesias is funny, and I believe them. So check him out, as his Too Hot, Too Fluffy tour hits the Valley Isle. True Story: When I first heard of The English Beat, I thought they were a band of guerilla warriors who attacked typos.

To my dismay, I learned that they aren’t, in fact, a band of brave editors protecting the populace from bad grammar. But they are a pretty awesome band that fuses ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk. Their lyrics cover a range of topics including love, unity and politics.

And get this—they formed in Birmingham in 1978, during a time of high unemployment and social upheaval. Kinda makes you wonder what kind of music is being made now, right? Hopefully it’s as killer as The English Beat. I think their name comes from the fact they are a) English; and b) they’ve got sick beats. Thanksgiving kicks off the season of food indulgence, which ends on New Year’s Eve when we make those shaky resolutions to lose the extra pounds. Begin the holidays on a good note (and earn the right to stuff your face) at the annual Turkey Trot for Fun race in Kula. Not only will you be warming up your appetite, but the event helps support the Maui Food Bank (remember to bring canned goods for the needy). The challenge is not to be the fastest, but to accurately predict your finishing time. Prizes, which go to the three people in each race who come closest to their time (no watches allowed!), include a turkey, ham and pumpkin pie, bringing us back to where we started.
