What kind of dumbass dumps a car battery on the beach? All batteries, but especially those that go in automobiles, are incredibly toxic. They’re filled with acid and lead—stuff that will just do wonders once it inevitably leaks into the ocean. The tragedy is that it’s ridiculously easy for even lazy fools like you to get rid of these things responsibly. All you have to do is take them to Sears or Napa Auto Parts. Both of those places recycle old car batteries.

They’ll take them from anyone—as many as you’ve got. Plus, if you buy a new battery at Napa, they’ll discount the price $4 if you bring in our your old battery.

‘Just Another Kind of Scientist’

Idini’s Redux

Rodney Blount knows how to release the fear I used to be terrified of hypodermic needles. There was no explainable origin, but if you put a needle in front of me, I would either break into a cold sweat or faint. Nothing I did would end it, even hypnotherapy.

Then last week my phobia became the focus of a dinner conversation at a friend’s house. But rather than make my phobia the source of entertainment, my friend introduced me to Rodney Blount.

She had described him to me as an “energy healer.” He’s a certified master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and is trained in advanced Eastern energetic techniques.

“What I do is thought healing,” Blount told me later. “We live in a thought based universe. And thoughts are things.

A person’s thoughts about you can literally change your blood chemistry, and your thoughts and your thinking can change theirs.”

At the dinner party, Blount immediately volunteered to help me with my needle phobia.

“How ready do you feel to release this fear?” he asked me.

“Very ready,” I said.

“Are you ready to release it quickly?” he asked.

“Absolutely.” I said.

Still, I felt rather skeptical that this phobia could be cured over dinner in just a few minutes.

Blount closed his eyes. I studied him as the room fell silent. He looked to be deep in meditation. All I could see was a glimpse of the whites of his eyes.

Several minutes passed in silence until he opened his eyes. “How is your fear now?”

Much to my shock, I had difficulty recalling the same memory that had minutes before nearly sent me horizontal. I could visualize the scene, but something felt different. The fear was gone.

Blount then asked me to imagine going somewhere to get a shot. My heart raced a bit, but not like before. What had just transpired overshadowed the disappointment I felt over this small pang of anxiety.

But Blount wasn’t finished. “I like to go for 100 percent,” he said. He closed his eyes again, and several more minutes of silence passed. When Blount opened his eyes again, I found myself laughing about a phobia that had plagued me for as long as I could remember.

Wittenburg suffered from a staph infection in his leg. Nothing, not even antibiotics, helped him. It dragged on for two years. Then he met Blount.

“For me, he gets results, and that’s what counts,” said Wittenburg. “My leg is cured.”

To the eyes of an innocent bystander, it may appear that Blount is performing miracles. He disagrees.

“When I work and do this kind of stuff now, I kind of prefer if it’s unremarkable,” he said. “Because I have come to understand that it’s pretty unremarkable when you start to understand the laws of energy around us.”

The cozy dive Idini’s has had a new owner since last October but still suffers from the same old problem—running afoul of the Maui County Department of Liquor Control.

And the LC seems just about out of patience.

Still holding a temporary liquor license, owner Dana Luahiwa and her attorney Steven Songstad appeared before the Board of Adjudication on May 5 on three charges stemming from Idini’s over-serving a regular customer who ended up getting into a car accident. The case was eerily similar to the one that came before the board last Oct. 14.

That accident had ended in a fatality and ultimately cost then-owner Bob Idini his license.

“This seems to be Idini’s business as usual,” Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge told the Board. Acknowledging that Lauhiwa managed to get into trouble while still holding a temporary permit, Hedge added that, “This is when they’re supposed to be on their toes.”

Pleading not guilty to the charges, Luahiwa and Songstad at first asked for a continuance. After listening to Songstad say he’d only been on the case for a couple weeks and got confused about one of the witnesses the prosecution intended to call, the Board noted that Luahiwa had known about the case since March and angrily rejected any delay.

“The reason we’re having this discussion [is that] we see it as you failing to do your job properly on time,” Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama told Songstad. “You’re delaying our ability to address this issue.”

But after a 10 minute break that stretched into 20 minutes, Songstad came back with a settlement offer: Luahiwa would plead guilty in exchange for the prosecution dropping the third charge—illegally allowing a drunk in the premises. Hedge quickly agreed, though she promised that if Idini’s was caught over-serving again her department would ask for a license revocation.

Still, the Board seemed almost disappointed that they weren’t going to slam the door on Idini’s new owner. After fining the bar $2,000 for each of the remaining charges, Murayama made a statement.

“The Board did discuss suspension and revocation,” he told Luahiwa. “It’s not a threat, but something we want you to take into serious consideration.”

MAUICOUNTY Amidst all this talk of our local reservists in the U.S. Army’s 411th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy) returning safely from Iraq, the website www.thememoryhole.org today showed pretty much once and for all that our war in Iraq began under false pretenses. It linked to a Times of London scoop based on a secret July 23, 2002 British secret service memo on a then-recent Iraqi invasion planning meeting. Stating flat out that “Military action was now seen as inevitable”—remember, this was written months before our fearless leader George W. Bush went on TV and said “I hope the use of force [against Iraq] will not become necessary”—the memo repeated time and again that Bush wanted war. “It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action,” the memo’s author wrote. Then the author explained Bush’s problem with invading Iraq. “But the case was thin,” he wrote. “Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran.” The story’s gotten a lot of play in Britain, but over here, no one much beyond the websites Memory Hole and Salon has written about it. I guess this is old news to everyone but me.

THURSDAY, MAY 5 Speaking of the war, our beloved U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawai’i) is for it. And sure, why not? I mean, being a Democrat in Congress these days sucks—no power, no ability to get amendments passed, only one measly cup of Senate Bean Soup per day. So is it really surpris-

ing that he voted today to approve Bush’s $82 billion spending bill for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? I mean, sure—Bush and his minions told us years ago that Iraqi oil revenues would finance the war, but they said a lot of things that turned out to be bullshit. Besides, who wants to be part of the low side of a 368-58 vote, especially with all the talk show hosts calling for us to “support the troops” and all that? Neil Abercrombie (D, Honolulu), that’s who!

According to the Associated Press, Abercrombie said he voted against the bill because it was just a “slush fund for Halliburton.” You remember Halliburton, right? It’s that mega-construction firm once run

by Vice-Fearless Leader Dick Cheney which got many millions of dollars in Iraqi reconstruction contracts, making it pretty much the only beneficiary of our wonderful war.

The proposed one-mile long Lahaina Bypass will cost $57 million, The Maui News reported today. One mile long. That’s it. Just one mile—a distance a healthy adult can walk in about 15 minutes. So $57 million sounds reasonable, right? I mean, it’s only $10,795.45 per foot or $899.62 per inch. I hope they’re paving it with gold, because that’s some pretty expensive roadbed. And that’s just the first leg of the road! The whole thing’s something like nine miles long. But West Maui representative Kameo Tanaka (D, 10th District) isn’t worried. “The bypass is coming,” he told the News. Really? And when would that be? The year 2045? You know, Paia’s having similar problems with their Paia Bypass—a tiny road expected to take years to pave. Does the State of Hawai’i have something against the word “bypass”? If we started calling this things “connectors” or “mini-

Lingle is talking nonsense. With the exceptions of the American Revolution, the Civil War and quite probably World War II, our troops have never fought in defense of America’s freedom. They’ve fought for other nation’s freedoms, certainly, but not our own.

And brave as they are, U.S. troops aren’t fighting for our freedom in Iraq, except possibly our freedom to drive SUVs, though rising gas prices seem to be saying that that fight isn’t going so hot.

SATURDAY, MAY 7 Today was the big Welcome Home party at War Memorial Park for the 40 Maui reservists of the 411th who just got back from their year’s tour in Iraq. The good news is that lots of people showed up to express their thanks and joy that all 40 men and women were able to make it back unscathed. The bad news is that one of them was Governor Linda Lingle, who just couldn’t resist saying that the smattering of anti-war protesters she’d seen along the day’s parade route showed that some people still didn’t appreciate that soldiers like those who make up the 411th made our freedom to protest possible.

The University of Hawai’i is still trying to decide whether it wants to suck on the U.S. Navy’s $50 million classified research teat, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser.

What, oh what, is the school to do? The Navy’s saying they’ll wait, but not forever, but student activists are promising civil disobedience if UH opts to join the military-industrial complex. But by far the most depressing bit of info in the story is a quote from John Butler, who directs the University of Texas-Austin’s research institute. “You cannot become a big-time research university without doing classified research, but you can still be a great state university.” he said.

Great state university? Who wants to be that?

Anyway, Butler wasn’t through. “We do lots of classified research here at UT,” he added. “It’s just what major research universities, like Michigan and Wisconsin, do.” And as everyone knows, all great institutions of higher learning aspire to be like Michigan and Wisconsin.

TUESDAY, MAY 10 Been checking out those full-page, full-color ads for The Carlyle Group in The Maui News? Carlyle’s showing off their subsidiary’s new name, Hawaiian Telcom, which now owns Verizon Hawai’i. This is modern marketing at its finest: Carlyle is a $25 billion global equity fund, yet the ads proclaim that it’s just a “local company.”

Then They Came for the Children Feds arrest girls for teen snottiness “A society,” wrote Fyodor Dostoevsky, “can be ranked by how it treats its prisoners.” Former UN secretary general Peres de Cuellar said: “You measure the justice of society by how it treats its children.”

Judging by the recent roundup of two teenage girls, America is falling short by both measures.

They’ve vanished into the netherworld of a Homeland Security gulag and their story has already disappeared from the headlines, but the shocking case of two 16-year-old girls from New York City arrested a month ago ought to inspire outrage among every American worthy of the name. Since the government’s reasons for the girls’ imprisonment could apply to virtually any teenager, it should also spark fear.

Although she is conservative and devout, the girl and her parents vigorously deny that she is an Islamist extremist (not that such opinions are illegal), but this is post-9/11 America and post-9/11 America is out of its mind.

Based solely on an essay written by one of the two, the FBI says both girls are “an imminent threat to the security of the United States based upon evidence that they plan to become suicide bombers.” But the feds admit that they have no evidence to back their suspicions. Nothing.

“There are doubts about these claims, and no evidence has been found that such a plot was in the works,” one Bush Administration official admitted to the Times. “The arrests took place after authorities decided it would be better to lock up the girls than wait and see if they decided to become terrorists,” another told the New York Post. The same logic could be used to justify locking up any Muslim, or

home during at least one particularly impressive clash of wills and voices, talked us back into the land of the calmly reasonable. Then they left.

A quarter century later, my mom and I are best friends and I haven’t done anything the Secret Service ought to worry about. Right now, however, two girls from New York City are rotting in a HomeSec prison in Pennsylvania for doing nothing more than I did—one for fighting with her parents and writing an essay, the other accused of being her friend.

In early March, The New York Times reported on April 7, one girl’s parents “went to the local police station house” in the Queens Village neighborhood because “their teenage daughter... had defied their authority.” Things calmed down and the parents, believing their daughter had been scared straight, asked the NYPD to forget the whole thing.

It was too late for that. Without a warrant, NYPD detectives and federal agents burst into the girl’s home—no wonder they don’t have time to look for Osama!—where they “searched her belongings and confiscated her computer and the essays that she had written as part of a home schooling program,” say her family. “One essay concerned suicide... [that] asserted that suicide is against Islamic law.” The family is Bangladeshi. They are Muslim. That, coupled with the mere mention of suicide bombing in her essay, was enough to put

anyone at all. Heck, maybe that’s the idea.

The Bangladeshi girl, who was homeschooled and wears a veil, says she never even met her outgoing and more Americanized “coconspirator” from Guinea before the cops accused them of plotting to do... something.

Maybe.

She says FBI agents threatened to deport her parents and place her American-born siblings, a four-month-old baby and an 11-yearold, in foster care unless she confessed.

Even in PATRIOT Act-era America, alleged fantasies of martyrdom aren’t a crime. So HomeSec’s ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is holding both girls as illegal immigrants—one for entering the U.S. without an inspection, the other for overstaying her visa. And even that charge rests on razorthin ice.

“This is a girl who’s been in this country since she was two years old,” the Guinean girl’s teacher says. Ditto for the one from Bangladesh. Holding kids accountable for the actions of their parents is crazy, which is why immigration authorities don’t usually do it. Two-year-old babies don’t wade across the Rio Grande or overstay their visas.

Deporting American teenagers—American in every way that matters—to countries they’ve never even visited is equally insane.

I would be the first to applaud the FBI if they had arrested two proven would-be suicide bombers before they had the chance to strike. If they have evidence to that effect, they should make it public and bring charges in open court.

But that’s clearly not the case here. MTW

Kristen Robinson will long remember the team of Marshall Islands carvers she had to care for last year. They were here taking part in International Festival of Canoes, and they became family to her.

They would sing beautiful Marshallese songs to her every night in the van when she picked them up and brought them back to the hotel after their day of carving.

“When I picked them up at the airport they were very shy,” she recalled. “Only the master carver could look me in the eye.

When I dropped them off at the airport they gave me lei after lei.”

Robinson’s work with the Marshallese was obviously important to her, since she had to juggle her Festival duties with her normal responsibility as executive secretary to the Maui Marriott Ocean Club’s Project Director in Sales and Marketing.

The International Festival of Canoes is an internationally acclaimed event bringing canoe-carving teams from all over Polynesia to Lahaina. Their goal is to demonstrate and share the importance canoe voyaging holds in their respective cultures.

“We became involved in Festival of Canoes early on in the event,” said Maui Marriott General Manager Bill Countryman. “[Organizers] Theo Morrison and Jerry Kunitomo introduced this great concept of the Festival and we have always wanted to support it.”

It’s actually a lot of work being a sponsor. After all, the sponsors have to provide housing and meals for teams, but also have to be their liaison to Lahaina.

Most carvers come from out of state.

Many of them don’t speak English. Their sponsors are the ones they look to for support. For all of their hard work the sponsors get to keep the completed carved

canoes at the end of the event. These they very happily display for many years to come.

Last year a master carver from New Zealand presented Countryman with a canoe paddle in a special traditional ceremony that explained the significance of the carvings. This year the Marriott will be getting from the Baldwin High School team’s canoe. It will be dedicated to Donald Joel Howell, Jr. Howell was the Marriott’s Project Director in Sales and Marketing until he recently passed away.

Every year the event grows with new teams and sponsors signing up. This year the Lahaina Inn and Lahaina Restoration Foundation are co-sponsoring the New Zealand team. The 505 Front Street shopping complex will host the Marshall Islands team.

The Aston Ka’anapali Shores resort will sponsor the Tahiti team. This year the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel will be sponsoring a team that will be carving three-foot model canoes made from Koa wood. The Royal Lahaina will host a team of Tongan carvers and the Ritz-Carlton will take care of the Hawai’i team.

For the third year in a row the Westin will be hosting the Cooke Island team. Starbucks Hawai’i will support Lahainaluna High School’s student carvers. And Maui Community College will host a team building the Festival’s Hale Halawai, a traditional gathering place for carvers.

“When you do something for the community it is fun, it’s not work,” said Robinson. “Mr. Marriott was very involved in giving back to the community. With this event we are representing our culture’s future. This knowledge is very important.”

Real Deal Street Car Killah

Exploring Maui’s D DD I had forgotten how severe burning rubber smells. The air was thick with it, wafting around the area like some death cloud. Slowly and sluggishly the poisonous haze seeped into the car, taking on a strange, bluish tint from the neon dashboard lights. My eyes watered and I could taste the sharp, acrid musk of suffering tires.

We weren’t going particularly fast, maybe 25 to 30 miles per hour when Shifty pulled the emergency brake and floored it. Time stopped. The engine roared like a wounded lion—a deafening, frightening, horrible sound. The wheels spun as if we were on an ice skating rink.

Then Shifty eased up on the brake. Unleashed, the car rocketed forward, wheels still spinning up smoke. He violently yanked the wheel one way and the car headed straight for the wall.

I was certain I was going to die. I flashed back to all the times I had been in a car accident. I closed my eyes, waiting for the sounds of collision.

A moment later, the thunderous roar of the engine resumed. We didn’t hit the wall. There was more screeching and the car sounded angry. I couldn’t see in front of me because the path was blocked with the thick cloud of black smoke created by the squealing tires. Then, through the fog lights another wall emerged.

I thought about dying again.

Drifting is the art of driving a car sideways. It’s not easy, partly because automakers hire engineers to make cars do exactly the opposite. To do it right, a driver must

successfully defy the laws of physics, seamlessly juggling speed, mass and momentum to surf the car around tight corners. Style, not speed, is the main factor.

Shifty—for this story, he’s just called Shifty—is short and stocky with classic Hollywood good looks. He’s 35, an elder statesman in the world of drifting and his hair shows a touch of gray. He has a quick smile and an easy laugh but while drifting, his face changes, becoming distorted, almost cruel.

Once, while in the midst of a session I made a point to look at Shifty, look hard at his face and eyes. It was like the face of someone injecting heroin or in the throes of orgasm. It was distorted, tight with adrenaline. His bulging eyes darted rapidly, making infinite, crucial calculations on how much gas to give, how much break to apply.

Drifting is complicated. Several cars leave the central point and station themselves on the side of the road. A system of codes, blinking lights tell the drifters what they need to know: A car is coming; Wait a minute before going; Is that you? and so on.

Shifty said he’s never gotten a ticket. “If I get one ticket—shoots, brah, they take my safety sticker off and I can’t get one new one because all the modifications I made to my ride,” he said.

“Make me take off my mufflah, exaust. It’d be one disastah!”

Shifty lives in a ramshackle house in Happy Valley. He’s got cars in his yard behind the house, in front of the house and surrounding the

house. There are about 25 in all, in various stages of dismemberment. Some are broken down, some have no doors or tires or engine.

One sits regally on a tow truck. Using black spray-paint, someone has written “DRIFT SESSION” across its body.

Shifty’s car is a white Datsun 240SX two-door coupe that sits menacingly low to the ground.

There’s a large silver spoiler on the trunk and the whole body is covered in stickers.

On the left door it said in silver and black letters “DRIFT GUNDAN” with Japanese script beneath it. On the right it said the same thing, only backwards.

“Gundan means like, da kine, you know, da boss,” Shifty told me. “The main man.”

Shifty could go to Japan and be a hit. He has the skills, charisma, motivation and spirit, but lacks the money. He lives with his wife’s parents.

“Most of my money goes right back into the car,” he said. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I take care ah my kids. But you know, I keep my car up, too.”

His reputation is important to him. He has never lost a street race, he tells anyone who will listen. Once he lost on a technicality, but challenged the guy again. “He didn’t wanna see dis,” he said.

“All the stuff is from Japan,” he told me, walking around the car. “I just bought the shell here, for one projec’ car. It came wit one two-point-four but I ordered one two-point-oh from Japan, yeah?

In Japan, this is exactly what this car looks like.

“I bought dis one for five hundred dollahs, the previous owner he had big dreams to be one drift champion but life got in his way. He wanted to go to school, had one reality check, so I took it off his hands. I put at leas’ ten grand into it.

Everyting is custom for da car: brakes, suspension, e-brake. All custom. No one can drive dis car. They can’t control it. I got the touch.”

I got inside. It had race car seats with harness seat belts. Various gauges and controls covered the control panel. It looked like an airplane cockpit. A Playstation was affixed to the dash.

The garage it sat in had car parts and beer bottles strewn about. An old dog sat in the corner, swatting flies with his tail. A wall of trophies sat collecting dust toward the back.

“Those are from da street races,” Shifty said.

“Down at da track, yeah? Dis is da car that won ‘em.”

Another car sat in the garage—a sleek, tiny black Datsun.

“Dis is one street car,” Shifty said. “One ‘Real Deal Street Car Killah,’ that’s what I call ‘em.

Real Deal Street Car Killah is street-legal and clocks at just under 160 miles an hour. King of da street. I spent years building dis one. Start ‘em from da groun’ up.”

The garage is Shifty’s business. Here is where he customizes cars, turns timid old Nissans and Datsuns into Real Deal Street Car Killah’s. His clientele are aspiring drifters and street racers.

Shifty is an automotive Da Vinci and can quickly diagnose any problem on a car and fix it with

younger kids in high school. It is blowing up. I mean, we have outgrown our space here. We are using every nook and cranny we have and it’s still not enough.

“Even though, like on Oahu or on the Mainland, the scene is mostly Asian, in Maui you don’t have that. You have Asians and white folks, black people, Latinos, whoever. Out there each group has their own car culture. The whites have the muscle cars, the Latino and blacks have lowriders and the Asians the imports. Here it’s not like that. Because it’s so small, we all have to get along. There is no room for bullshit.”

As we walked though the garage, I saw all kinds of Honda Civics in various states of reconstruction.

“Civics are by far the most popular car in the import scene,” Higa said. “They are easy to manipulate, easy to get parts and easy to handle. We do, I’d say about three to five completes a month… ‘Complete’ is complete, from the ground up. From the tires, the exhaust, the engine, the mirrors, every single thing on the car is customized for the client.”

We came to one forlorn Civic, completely gutted. It’s shell was blotchy and painted in different colors.

“That’s a baby, a project car,” said Higa. “We plan on turning that… into that,” he said, ges-

I look around at the photos on the wall. I see pictures of his wife and two kids.

“I took my wife out on one drift session,” Shifty told me. “She came out with us and usually she just watches but she said she wants to hop in wit’ me. ‘Shoots, honey, get in,’ I said. She wanted me to take it easy, you know. I said, ‘Naw, honey, in one drift session you gotta hit ‘em up, go all out.’ She liked it. She was a little scared, but she liked it.

“I’ve taken about 40 or 50 guys out on drift sessions. About half of them were sold, hook, line and sinker. They went out and bought cars, too. I help ‘em with modifications and they become part of the drifting family. I am lucky, you know. Everything I need I got right here. I got simple needs—some food, cars, my wife, my kids. I got it all right here. Christmas everyday.”

Drifting is a Japanese thing, part of the complex and eccentric Japanese youth pop culture. It began in the countryside, in mountain towns like Nagano, Hakone and Rokkosan. Like other forms of car racing, it began as an illegal thrill.

The popularity of drifting began when the kids from the mountains came down to the city and showed off their outrageous vehicles and unortho-

turing to another, gleaming Civic on lifts. “This takes us around two months to do right. That and about 11 grand.”

I asked why someone would spend so much money.

“Simple,” he said. “Pride. Pride in having the fastest, cleanest car on the block.”

“Is it an addiction?”

“I was just gonna say exactly that,” he said. “It is an addiction, speed. Almost like a drug, you can’t get enough, there is never an end and you will always want to go faster. Once you have set the limit on your car the first thing you want to do is break that record.

“I mean, it’s rare, shit, it never happens that someone is a drifter or a racer and he sells his car and buys a Saturn. There is always this, linear progression. You always want to take it to the next level. But think about it this way. People spend their money on dumber shit: plastic surgery, a horse, I don’t know.

“I will say that no one in the scene is fucked up on drugs. I mean, I have seen them but not for very long. The nature of what we do selects them out. You have to be on point to do this. How are you gonna drift when you stay jag? We may have our drug but at least it’s right here,” he added, patting the car.

My first drifting experience took less than a minute but felt like hours.

Different people have different reactions after their first experience. Some want out of the car, get sick and vomit. Others, like me, laughed uncontrollably and said “That’s so crazy, that is so fucking crazy!” over and over.

When it was over, I got out of the car to watch the rest of the pack. Our group, which grew by the hour, was situated on a high point near a cane field. There were about 40 or 50 people, of which only 10 were actually drifting.

The rest came for the party, to talk to girls and look at the fancy cars. I watched a trio of morbidly obese locals calling themselves the Fat Fucker Crew torture a centipede.

From my vantage point the whole scene became theater. There was no other traffic except for the drifters and the screeching echoes bouncing off the nearby mountains.

I plugged my ears and realized that without any sound, it looked synchronized and beautiful, as though the cars were performing some kind of vehicular ballet. I lost myself in a silent dreamlike trance until someone nudged me.

Police cars were headed our way. It was time to run. Everyone scattered, jumping in cars, heading for the hills, peeling out. It was as I ran that I first noticed that Shifty’s car only had one headlight. MTW

Eventually drifting as a sport gained legitimacy and became a multi-million dollar industry.

Drifting has its own video games, cartoon series, fan clubs, a super league of drifters called D1 and even a yearly grand prix race that serves as drifting’s answer to the Indy 500.

On the West Coast and Oahu, drifting is huge.

On Maui, the scene is still in its infancy. A drifting store at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Mall called Speedline Hawai’i closed for lack of business.

Tucked within the labyrinthine streets of Kahului sits another shop—1320 Performance, Maui’s premier import car garage. In contrast to Shifty’s house, the cars outside 1320 are clean, with polished rides with tinted windows and rims.

The 1320 Performance crowd goes to the glitzy parties. Hapa’s has nights for them. They are the young and beautiful of the import car scene.

“We make fast, clean, powerful cars,” said Matt Higa, who owns 1320 Performance. Higa is 25 and took over from the previous owner in 2001. “I am pretty much a self-taught mechanic.

I mean, I had some training and stuff from the college, but mostly I learned from being here, experimenting with different things.”

Films like Fast and The Furious, as well as a general interest in fast cars has been beneficial for Higa. “The market is on the upswing, we have seen the scene grow rapidly,” he said while giving me a tour of the garage. “The older guys like Shifty are still in it and influencing the

The Pukalani Superette Keeping the wheel moving after 50 years Where, oh where, have all of the superettes gone? I hate to date myself, but those of us in the over-30 crowd know the value of superettes. They’re where we stop when we need something not available at a convenience store and aren’t in the mood for the hustle and bustle of a supermarket.

Thankfully the Pukalani Superette has kept Upcountry youth savvy. My friend Sherri Reeve takes her teenage daughter there all the time.

“I just love their stuff,” Reeve told me recently. “It’s so unique.” She and her daughter Hailey’s top Superette picks are

A longtime upcountry resident, Reeve owns The Sherri Reeve Art Gallery in Makawao. “I like knowing I’m supporting small business,” she said. “I walk out of the Superette feeling like I’ve contributed to the heritage of my town.”

Driving by it’s hard to miss the festive banners outside advertising the Superette’s 50th anniversary.

Last week Myles Nakashima, co-owner of the Superette with his brother Aric, took time out of a busy morning to tell me about the history of this unique little Pukalani goldmine.

The story started back in the 1920s when Nakashima’s grandparents, Takeo and Kome Tanizaki, opened the Tanizaki Store.

“My grandparents came here from Japan and they had a store in Wailuku,” said Nakashima. “Then there was a fire and the store burned. So that’s why they

moved up here. They bought this whole corner lot, which includes the Shell Station.”

In 1955, the family incorporated the store and changed the name to the Pukalani Superette. The doors opened in December of that year.

The story goes, that on the grand opening day, my mother was giving birth to me,” said Nakashima. “I’ll be 50 in December so I guess that corroborates my story!

“My father Noriaki Nakashima, he was like the Kamehameha of Pukalani Superette,” Nakashima said. “He consolidated all of the shares under one name. He bought out the rest of the relatives. My father was a shrewd one. He was very business-like. Had a great education and he took chances. Of course he also had the good fortune of marrying my mother. He married well!”

His mother, Sumiko Nakashima, ran the store for the next 40 years. When she retired, she passed the store down to her sons.

Nakashima’s brother Aric operated the store on his own for 10 to 15 years. Then in 1991, Myles joined in to help.

“So I’m kind of new here!” he said.

“Compared to some of the other workers who have been here 30 to 35 years.”

To celebrate the golden anniversary, managers and employees are sporting new uniforms. They’re also planning a special party in October, in addition to their usual weekly anniversary specials. I hope nobody missed the Ben & Jerry’s special a couple weeks ago— $2 a pint.

“We couldn’t do a back-to-the-‘50s pricing because it would just be too low,” said Nakashima. “So, what we are trying to do is 50 percent off regular retail pricing. We have weekly anniversary sale items with a real, real hot price.”

I asked him his favorite thing about running the store.

“That’s a tough one,” he said. “You know, I’m not a negative man. But I always said that if I had an extra several million dollars, I wouldn’t buy a supermarket. But you know,

“I’m going to develop this new catch phrase for the store in our ads, and it is, ‘We have the best customers,’” he added. “That’s it. We have the best customers. We try to train our employees to appreciate the customers. Some places you go it’s like ‘No boddah me,’ or ‘Don’t take that off the shelf, I’ll have to fill it later.’ Some places you don’t feel appreciated,

so we try to train employees to appreciate the customers. We try to go the extra mile. Being a smaller independent store, we are able to cater to peoples’ specific needs.

“If someone comes in needing a special case of wine, we’ll get them a case. We have special requests every day. And that’s a business, to fulfill the customer’s needs, to sell something.

Because if you don’t have sales, you don’t have anything. Sales is our number one priority. If we don’t sell things, the wheel doesn’t move.”

Paul Bland Pizza chef, Tiki Lounge The Tiki Lounge is the only place I know where the chef will bring out the food. I’ll bring out the food to the table and say, ‘Check out this killer pizza.’ I’ll ask people, ‘How was the pizza?’ and I get killer feedback all the time.

Come down and try them out. You’re gonna say ‘It’s the best thin-crust I’ve ever had.’ I really think it’s the best thin crust on the island.

I’ve been at the Tiki Lounge for about eight months now. I’ve been in food service for about 10 years, and I like making pizzas. Everybody’s really nice. It’s really a fun place to work. We have hot waitresses.

I’m pretty much a Kihei boy. I’m 28 and have been in Hawai’i for about 15 years. Originally from Colorado, I came out here for vacation, ended up liking it and went back to get the rest of my stuff. I love the weather, love the ocean.

I’d like to get my own business going. To make my fortune, I’m gonna try and publish my own book called Bland Cooking. It’s a good, catchy name. I’ve been thinking about that for the last five years. I got some recipes and things I wanna create.

I wanna throw something out there for the people on the mainland. They don’t have all this local-kine food ‘cuz they don’t eat that all the time. If I get my book off the ground, maybe I could have my own little place, create my own menus—my own image of the island food, l guess. Maybe make a better pizza. Nah, we’ve got the best up here. MTW

Mark Farina on…

How To Be a DJ His signature “Mushroom Jazz” sound—downtempo hip-hop mixed with jazzy soul— is famous worldwide, as is the funky house he spins—a reflection of his Chicago upbringing. He’s been voted one of the “Top 20 DJs in the World” by DJ and BPM Magazines and was nominated for the Dancestar Award for Best New Artist Album (Air Farina, 2004) and California Music Award for Best DJ Talent. He’s worked alongside such turntable icons as Derrick Carter and Cajmere. And he just released the fifth volume in the Mushroom Jazz series. Let’s see, what else? Oh, he had his own hugely successful acid jazz club in San Francisco. He also tours a hell of a lot—playing something like 300 shows a year—and has been known to spin extended sets of over eight hours. Having said all that, we figured it made sense to ask Farina for five steps in how to become a successful DJ. And he said: 1. Start simple—enjoy music.

2. Attain lots of music. Preferably, purchase it. When I first started, I didn’t have the option. But it’s important to support the music [scene]. Get your crate together, your sound together. Get all the ingredients and mix ‘em every which way with each other before you meet the public eye.

3. Start recording. Document yourself self-critique. It’s good to have a hard copy to listen to and judge. There were many times I thought I rocked it and then listened and was like, ewwww.

Practice, which is something a lot of DJs don’t always do.

4. Stay current. Embrace technology. Keep moving forward.

You used to have to get all your stuff at record stores. When I worked at the record store, I had to deal with music all day—I was bombarded with it, good and bad. The unreleased stuff were bonuses. Now, you have so many more options online.

5. Be creative. I’m into DJs who are not doing the same thing over and over. No set playlists! I’m always looking for more tunes, searching for a capella, obscure stuff.

Be open: Have a couple songs you like but be flexible, if the party needs it.

Marley Memorial Thursday, 9 p.m. at Casanova [MUSIC] There are fans today who were too young to appreciate him while he was alive and there are those who were shocked by his early death. But all appreciate the music and life’s work of Robert Nesta Marley; the child who was born into poverty in Jamaica and the man who grew to a legend and a national hero.

May 11th marked 24 years since his passing, at age 36. Since then Marley has remained one of the leading voices in the fight for freedom against poverty and oppressive government (not to mention simply great tunes, which you and your auntie not only agree on but also both know all the words to). Arguably reggae’s most important and popular artist, Marley’s message is timeless and has connected people from all walks of life, all over the world. Come celebrate his legacy at Casanova’s celebration, where DJ Packey Malley will present the film A Story of Bob Marley—Rebel Music (9 p.m.), which includes interviews and rare footage. Then Malley, along with DJ Kymba will take the stage (10:30 p.m.) and continue to spin the best in roots reggae throughout the night. One love!

Hard Punches, Soft Drama Jet Li balances two worlds

Actually, the guy in the back looks like the real attack dog Jet Li (Romeo Must Die) plays a caged slave named Danny who’s been raised to act as a martial arts attack dog by his loan shark warden Bart (Bob Hoskins) in collecting debts from deadbeat clients.

Whenever Bart removes the metal collar from Danny’s neck it signals a consequence of flashy ultraviolent action.

Set in Glasgow, the story follows Danny’s escape from his cruel keeper when he meets Sam (Morgan Freeman) a benevolent blind piano tuner and his musically gifted stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon) who accept the traumatized man into their humble family. Li’s fighting sequences are unique for their street fighting style of realism and brutality in this film produced by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita) and directed by Louis Leterrier.

Unleashed is a cinematic oddity created

by Europe’s leading cottage film industry that consists of one man, Luc Besson.

Besson’s script fits his signature narrative template that involves a tragically distanced character prone to violence but then rehabilitated by a stranger. But the gaps that occurred in the making of the movie are what give it its surprising curves that compensate for its frequent dips into sticky heartstring clichés.

fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, who had just finished work on Kill Bill, Louis Leterrier defined the film’s opening fight sequence by using plastic dolls to communicate the action to Yuen. What the audience sees in that initial conflict is the most aggressive and ferocious fight sequence Jet Li has ever filmed. Li uses fast repeated right fist punches that send tremors of inertia through the audience. Danny uses head butts and tears out his subject’s hair with a ferocity that speaks directly to the seven months Jet Li spent creating the character.

After Luc Besson awarded the director title for the film (previously titled Danny The Dog) to his apprentice Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) the studio producing the movie began to shrink at the promise of it being too violent and withdrew its financing. Morgan Freeman threw a curveball of his own when he showed up for his first day of shooting and announced that he would be playing his character as blind. By this time Yuen Wo-ping and his team of assistants had taken full control of the remaining fight sequences, which, however brutal, don’t match the bracing shock of the opening scene.

Danny’s character represents a specific type of ambitious martial arts student who will only respond to the commands of his coach or master. He is a person outwardly doomed to go through life as a drone when he’s not engaged in specifically dictated routine action. Danny’s peculiar fighting style is like that of a wild animal that focuses all of its attention on one aspect of an opponent at a time rather than keeping a 360-degree awareness that’s prac-

ticed by martial artists.

The departure is jolting because it’s foreign to the kind of fighter we know Jet Li to be.

Even his fighting reflects the differences of his character. It’s analogous to Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master where Chan’s fighting technique changed to fit the character.

Danny’s eventual escape into the precarious safety of family life is buffered by the classical piano music that Victoria plays. Danny’s childlike nature enables him to identify with playing an electronic keyboard that Sam gives him for the pure joy of making musical notes. The dramatic tension, between Danny’s innate fighting ability and his capacity for peaceful family life, goes slack because we want to see Jet Li fight however much the story says we should enjoy watching Danny get his first ice cream headache in the tender company of a young woman.

There’s an unintended ironic subtext at play about serving two masters that gets more dispensable dominion when Bart survives one too many sure death situations. Just when Sam has trained Danny to become his piano tuning assistant, Bart turns up to retain his long lost attack dog. Danny’s bi-polar character allows Jet Li to exercise acting muscles he’s never been allowed to show onscreen before and it’s gratifying to see the emotional colors that he creates.

In light of the odd mix of rare creative personalities that put their fingerprints on the film, Unleashed is a pleasantly puzzling movie full of gentle charisma and fiery action. The narrative connections are comically rough but the performances are heartfelt. There’s something special here. MTW

UNLEASHED - (R) - Action/Adventure - Danny (Jet Li) has lived his whole life without any sort of normal socializing and with only one lesson learned: how to fight. He is “owned” and treated like a dog—including having to wear a collar (ew, kinky!)—by his boss, Bart (Bob Hoskins). After a car accident lands Bart in a coma (um, can we say karma??), Danny’s on the run and meets a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman) who uses music to teach Danny some things about the world and about being human. Now Showing A LOT LIKE LOVE - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy - Supposedly, this flick is about destiny, connection and the frequently fuzzy line between chance friendships and “happily ever after.” It traces the relationship of Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) who met on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, each of them declaring that they couldn't be more wrong for each other. Uh, hello? Hasn’t everyone seen When Harry Met Sally already?! Yeah, we all know how this one ends.

AMITYVILLE HORROR - (R) - Horror - So here we are again, at this house of horror. Back in 1994, Ronald Defeo confessed to methodically shooting his parents and four siblings while they slept, claiming "voices" in the house drove him to commit the heinous murders. A year later, the Lutz family moves into the house thinking it would be their dream house. But shortly after settling in, bizarre and unexplainable events, nightmarish visions and evil—worse than just a leaky roof— resides... Damn, who is their real estate agent?!

THE BEAUTY SHOP – (PG-13) – Comedy – Here we are back in the chair again. Gina (Queen Latifia) has finally had it with her egotistical boss (Kevin Bacon). The universe begins when the world ends, nothing is what it seems—even a simple towel is the most useful thing in the universe. Who knew?

THE HOUSE OF WAX - (R) - Suspense - Why, this remake? And why, Paris Hilton?? A group of friends on their way to a college football game falls prey to a pair of murderous brothers in an abandoned small town (of course). They discover that the brothers have their own main attraction: creating an entire town filled with the wax-coated corpses of unlucky visitors. Now the group must find a way out before they, too, become permanent exhibits in the House of Wax. Hey, at least Paris is already halfway there!

ICE PRINCESS – (G) – Romantic Comedy - Don’t think this is another Ice Castles, people. It’s just another one of them formulaic, cute teen chick underdog battles against “the popular girls” to rise up the ranks and win... something. A trophy? The presidency? Oh yeah, self-esteem. Whoopee. We all know self-esteem gets you nowhere. Just look at Robert Blake! Stars Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack and Kim Cattrall.

THE INTERPRETER - (PG13) - Drama, Thriller African-born U.N. interpreter Silvia Broome, (Nicole Kidman) inadvertently overhears a death threat against an African head of state scheduled to address the United Nation's General Assembly. Of course, she realizes that she has become a target and that no ones believes her, especially Tobin Keller (Sean Penn), the federal agent charged with protecting her.

SAHARA - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Explorer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) takes on a treasure hunt in several regions of North Africa in search of a ship called The Ship of Death—why, Dirk, why?! Anyway, along with his smarty pants sidekick (Steve Zahn), they use their clever heroics to help out the beautiful Doctor Eva (Penelope Cruz), who believes this ship is the reason why there are a lot of mysterious deaths.

She’s smart, that one.

SIN CITY – (R) – Action-Adventure and Crime/Gangster – Another tale of a violent city where the police department is more corrupt than the bad seeds. This futuristic tale follows three stories, including one involving Marv (Mickey Rourke), a bad ass who is a Terminator-like, nearly impossible-to-kill street fighter. He goes on a rampage of vengeance when his one-night-stand gets murdered—correction, his one true love. Aw, what a guy to care the morning after!

For those addicted to island living, this is a great representation of the diversity of the music and cultures of the huge region of Oceana. Although it is strange that no Hawaiian performers are included, it is interesting to hear the word “aloha” coming from other Polynesian performers, and to notice the similarities in harmony and feeling that is present in Hawaiian music. Te Vaka, based in New Zealand, creates a contemporary, pan-Pacific sound that translates well the tropical joy of the South Pacific. Whirimako Black of New Zealand delivers the album’s best track, “Wahine Whakairo,” a tribute to female traditional stone carvers. O-shen, born in New Guinea but residing in Hawai’i, deftly mixes traditional music with a little pidgin hip-hop. —Putumayo World Music 2004 [JOE GATTO]

The Music and Dance of the Canoe Te Vaka celebrates the culture of Polynesia As a child, I was dedicated at a Spanishspeaking church in Seattle by Reverende Castano. No one in my family was Hispanic—my mother is just a charmingly whimsical woman who enjoys a good Spanish sermon from time to time. In fact, I grew up knowing much more about Hispanic cultures than my own wildly eclectic European heritages.

Perhaps it’s the lack of my own cultural awareness that makes me interested in world traditions that have a strong intimacy between people and history.

South Pacific cultures have always appealed to me, especially the symbiotic relationship they hold between people, history and environment.

At the beach, I often think of how gracefully man interacts with the ocean despite its power. And then there are other days when I get smashed into rocks and the whole thing doesn’t seem very graceful at all.

I sit and wonder how the first canoe conversation was instigated: “Hey guys!

Let’s go make a big hole in this log and go out way past the waves to see what’s out

there.” Amazing! How did that go over? How would you build it? What would it look like?

Well, my worries are over because the MACC will be hosting a five-week exhibit entitled “Pacific Voyagers” starting May 14 that will display canoes built in during last year’s Festival of Canoes, along with tools and drums used in their construction. I’m glad that my canoe quandaries will be laid to rest but I’m even more excited to see Te Vaka (literally, “the canoe”), a Polynesian musical group that will be helping celebrate the opening of the exhibit on Friday.

The band has 12 members from all over the South Pacific: Samoa, the Cook Islands, Tokelau, Tuvalu and New Zealand. Their music is a complete sensory experience incorporating dancers, a seven-man drum section, acoustic and electric guitars for a funky, modern edge. They’ve also got some of the most moving ballads you could hope for.

The music and dance of Te Vaka allows the listener to travel through language and time.

You’re there in the canoe with them, emotions ebbing and flowing with the waves and rhythms. It throws audiences into a tumultuous Polynesian free-for-all. One minute you’re dancing, the next you’re tearing it up.

It’s delightful mayhem.

The band is led by the inspired songwriter Optaia Foa’i, a Tokelaun/Tavulian man original-

ly from Samoa. At age nine, he and his family moved to a small Tokelaun community in New Zealand. About that time he also began playing music, imitating popular Western styles. Foa’i says his music has now come full circle.

“I have purposefully retuned the guitar to an open tuning, as that was how I originally played it in Samoa,” he said. “I’ve also used a Polynesian language (Tokelaun) to express different aspects of Polynesia in the most honest and natural way I can.”

Te Vaka’s beautifully pure dedication to its culture has won them worldwide acclaim and recognition, sending them to the top of the world music charts. They’ve been nominated for Best Roots Album and won Best Pacific Album at the Music Industry Awards in New Zealand. They have been involved with WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) and managed to draw attention to global warming, which is an important issue facing the South Pacific.

On Tokelau, the highest point above sea level is a mere five meters. It’s predicted that the entire island will be swallowed up into the ocean by the end of the 21st century, forcing its citizens to flee and rendering the island uninhabitable. Think about that next time you want to use aerosol! But mostly, Te Vaka puts on a great show to entertain fans all over the world. MTW

The Early Days I know who I was when I got up this morning, But I must have changed many times since then.

From Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland I had some friends visiting last week. Some of them were the first people I hung out with when I originally moved to Maui. And it got me to reminiscing—mainly, about how I got here and what kind of person I was back then. Have I told you this story yet? Oh, well… if I have, I’m sorry.

Around eight years ago, I was finishing up my marine bio studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I was also working in a toxicology lab and living with my 17-year-old cat in a quiet garden cottage in Rio Del Mar. On the weekends, I’d head up to San Francisco to visit my film industry boyfriend, whom I’d been seriously dating and living with off and on for five years.

Although we talked of the future together, ours was not the most stable of relationships. He was pure alpha-male with chauvinistic tendencies and I willingly took on the (don’t laugh) subservient role. I cleaned, while he took apart motorcycles in the garage and drank beer with his buddies. He had poker night and I did laundry. I might’ve even cooked a dinner or two.

Yeah, I know—weird.

Yet we were both in the midst of assuming new identities: he of a unionized theatrical stagehand worker and rockabilly enthusiast—and me, about to embark on an arduous career in science and postgraduate work. I wanted to move back to our Haight District flat when I was done with school and he wanted to move to L.A. for more film work.

It wasn’t that big of a surprise then, that after I graduated, he dropped me like an Ed “Big Daddy” Roth remodel on his ’57 Chevy.

The same month we broke up and I was finished with school, my lab job ended and I was out of work. Also, my cat died. So instead of accepting a position in Sausalito as a research assistant in testing the neurophysiological effects light has on brain function, my mom suggested I move to Maui.

And so I did.

She was a little horrified to learn, however, that instead of immediately getting a job working with humpback whales or studying coral reef ecosystems, I signed on as food server at Compadre’s Bar & Grill in Lahaina. And she also didn’t like to hear that I acquired another damn boyfriend just as quickly—that is, instead of her living vicariously through my supposed life as a young, single chick on a tropical island beach surrounded by hot Hawaiian men serving me Mai Tais in coconut shells while fanning me with palm fronds.

I’ll admit, it does sound pretty good.

Anyway, over the course of the next year, I fell madly in love—with Maui, my new boyfriend and the notion of not having to spend hours on some scientific theses in a lonely study room or lab. I was making money, not being hassled by a bullying lover, taking a brain break and generally having a good time. The sort of time I should have been having during college, actually.

I bought a Jeep, even though I didn’t know how to drive a manual transmission. I spent many days purposely getting lost in Kula and Haiku. As the island’s horizons expanded, my problems regarding my new boyfriend’s obsession with Neil Diamond and Shawshank Redemption seemed less important.

Despite a few uphill stall-outs, the boyfriend and I maintained an acceptable stasis, until he decided to move back to the mainland. We kept up a sort of long-distance thing, and I learned another formidable skill–the art of Phone Sex. Or rather, the art of not embarrassing yourself in front of your roommates while locking yourself in the closet and violently faking orgasms.

To keep busy while he was away, I worked four jobs: Taco Tuesday Corona chick at Compadres, bartender at Red Lantern, food server at the Hard Rock Café and as the world’s most reluctant flower girl. But eventually the romance fizzled, I got burnt on the mindless work, repetition of island living and the fact that the weather was so tirelessly perfect at an average 80 degrees year-round.

I decided it was time to move back to San Francisco.

Everyone told me I would be back, but I didn’t believe them.
