I find his articles usually less than good. He does have a habit of twisting comments and actual fact to support his narrow opinions. It’s a small island and I know he hasn’t been here very long, which makes his commentary all the less meaningful. I also noticed you defended his work like a bratty frat brother. All of you seem young, trying your best to make a paper but coming off dorky! I guarantee I can write better, HONEST and more fascinating articles.

It is a challenge I would certainly meet.

As a health conscious citizen of Maui, I am responding to your Medical malpractice article (“Who Wants to be a Medical Malpractice Millionaire?” Feb 3, 2005).

The increase in malpractice suits over the past few decades has increased the health professional’s malpractice insurance rates so high that fewer people are interested in becoming physicians. Additionally, the high price of living on Maui makes it hard to recruit and maintain quality doctors.

In the state we are in now, there will be fewer doctors per capita than in the past.

The doctors who now endure have experienced a reduction in health insurance and Medicare reimbursements with an increase in malpractice insurance (OB Doctors pay up to $200,000 a year in malpractice insurance). In addition, doctors are expected to do more, be paid less, perform miracles and be perfect all at the same time.

The limitation in punitive costs that President Bush is suggesting is not so much for you and I to save a bunch of money on our health insurance premiums, but to have quality care from doctors that are not overworked and fiscally challenged. I’m not saying that doctors should not be liable for neg-

ligent behavior that breaks from their medical oath. On the other hand, we must put a limit on punitive damage rates so that we can maintain or increase the amount of doctors practicing and their quality of care.

You dropped the Grid, the only useful part, and kept in the ever unpopular Holoholo Girl? You guys have a pretty crappy paper. While I am at it, I’d like to write how particularly cheesy the Best of Maui issue was, with a Las Vegas theme!? (July 29, 2004). I came here to be far away from the trappings of Babylon. But considering the amount of Krispy Kremes I see go from here to other islands, many have a lot to learn.

It looked to me as if you were whispering to each other, hatching some secret plan. Then to my amazement, I heard wet splattering sounds against the pavement. Thinking you were going to the bathroom, I yelled, “Excuse me, but there is a public restroom right across on Front Street.”

But you couldn’t hear me because you both were vomiting so loudly. Then your friend pulled up in his beater truck. We all got a good look at you as you wiped the—clam chowder? chicken fingers? Pina Colada?—off your faces as you stumbled into the truck. You thought it was so funny to see me with a bucket of water, cleaning your filth off the sidewalk that you had to yell “I love you!” and “Aloha!” as you drove by. Did you have fun? I bet you don’t even remember what happened. To bad I can’t forget.

New Rules

Could it replace the Carthaginian in Lahaina Harbor?

Anyone who wants to see the quintessential Hawaiian sunsets needs to do nothing further than walk along the Front Street seawall in Lahaina. The vista offers so many eye-catching sights: the outline of Lanai, the old whaler replica Carthaginian off to the left, the line of boats moored offshore, the sailboat wrecked on the reef just ahead…

Ah yes, the wrecked boat. It’s been there since Halloween night. Rumors have flown though town since then—the owner was sitting in a bar somewhere crying over his loss, the owner fled the island, the owner was racking up thousands of dollars in fines each day the boat sat there cockeyed, its mast pointing towards the old Carthaginian.

The Dolfijn, looking very picturesque In fact, the owner is named Vagan Bryant. He’s actually the first guy who got his boat wrecked in Lahaina who harbor officials have been able to track down. But if he had his wish, his boat would remain exactly where it is.

“Perhaps you can help me out with this,” Bryant said in a phone interview from Honolulu. “I’m trying to petition the state to leave it there. It seems to be an obvious tourist attraction. Everybody I know is talking about this boat. I’ve gotten photographs of it. You can find a few online. I heard there’s a tourist company that’s taking people around the boat.

I should be getting royalties.”

Bryant’s plan sounds outlandish, and probably is, but it has some possibility and even logic. The boat, lying intact but skewed at 45 degrees, does add a bit of charm to the harbor.

And with the old Carthaginian scheduled for sinking in the next year, it would ensure that Lahaina Harbor always have a noteworthy boat nearby for tourist photos and plein-air painters. And the boat has a tidy little story attached to it.

The boat’s called the Dolfijn, which is a Scandinavian word for “dolphin,” but Bryant had wanted to call it The Technicolor Dreamboat. After all, he’d bought the steel hull, single-masted schooner and he could call it what he wanted. But Bryant never got around to changing the name. And now, of course, it’s too late.

That’s because on Halloween night, 2004, the Dolfijn got wrecked on a reef just a few yards off Front Street in Lahaina. Bryant had moored her offshore—safely, he thought—and went into town to party.

“I lived on the boat,” said Bryant. “It was everything I had.”

But while in town, a south swell came up.

Soon the Dolfijn was dragging her anchor.

“I didn’t know [the swell] was coming,”

Spewing Sewage In his Feb. 11 story on a Ma’alaea Harbor meeting held the day before, Maui News reporter Harry Eagar wrote that some of the boaters insisted that pump-out stations “aren’t really needed, that following regulations and pumping waste overboard out at sea is harmless.” Though Eagar mentioned “vigorous debate” over sewage dumping, his story mentioned none of the scientific and health reasoning for the proposed facilities.

For instance, he neglected to mention the fact that many residents have seen, swam, kayaked, surfed and canoed in waste dumped by commercial boats along the South Maui shore. And while Eager certainly captured the boaters’ point of view that the proposed pump-out facilities would, at the least, be “inconvenient,” he failed to quote or even acknowledge any of the county officials and health experts who think sewage dumping is bad.

Like Dr. Lou Herman of the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory, who’s said that sewage dumps are seriously damaging Hawaii’s fragile marine environment. And State Health Adviser Dr. Lorrin Pang, who said continually adding more sewage to the waters leads to “a greater chance of a serious outbreak.”

Bryant said. “It would have been so easy to save, too—there was a secondary anchor on deck. All someone would have had to do was toss it overboard. The boat cost $50,000. I’ll be paying that off for the next five years. It’s a pretty sad story.”

Bryant made a couple attempts to pull the Dolfijn off the reef. But her steel hull and 22-ton dry weight made towing her off all but impossible.

“At the moment, getting it off the reef would cause more damage than leaving it there,” Bryant said. “They’ll have to go in with torches and cut it up.”

Though stories of massive fines have been circulating through town, Lahaina Harbor Master Hal Silva said he had no idea what, if any, fines would be levied against Bryant.

“There are no fees [for removal] that are levied until the vessel is removed,” said Silva.

“Since the owner of the vessel is not able to take care of its removal, the State becomes responsible.”

Silva added that the State is in the process of getting bids from a salvage contract, but had no idea when the boat would get hauled away. If Bryant has his way, it’ll take a long time. MTW

The Maui County Department of Liquor Control will shortly begin to revise the Rules that govern the island’s bars, restaurants and booze joints.

The Rules. The statutes. The Thou Shalt Nots that say nightclubs have to tape off their dance floors and can’t host live acts that curse. They’re the laws that tell the LC where to go and who to hammer.

“We’re in the process of rewriting the rules at this time,” said LC Director Franklyn Silva during the Feb. 9 Liquor Commission hearing. He added that the department will hold public hearings as part of the revision process.

Silva made his announcement on the same day the Liquor Commissioners were to discuss a Dec. 29, 2004 letter to Silva from the Honolulu-based Retail Liquor Dealers Association (RLD) concerning possible rule changes. The RLD is a lobbying group that represents more than 200 liquor licensees throughout Hawaii.

Their letter to Silva twice called the mandatory penalties the LC levies against establishments that serve drunks or minors “arbitrary and capricious. These penalties include fines of up to $2,000, license suspension and revocation, depending on the severity and past history. Instead, the RLD asked that the LC focus on the individuals who break the law, rather than the current policy of handing down collective punishment on the entire establishment.

In the letter, RLD executive director Richard C. Botti told Silva that it was “unreasonable to punish the licensee for non-compliance when the employee has full discretion, was properly trained, and understands the consequences of non-compliance.” Botti also doesn’t go for the LC “suspend[ing] a licensee’s license when other innocent employees, suppliers, and customers will be the unintended recipient of the punishment.

“The Rule is arbitrary and capricious in that it is an unreasonable action without consideration of the licensee, all other employees, suppliers, and all other customers that have a stake in the losses created by the decision of an employee that has little to lose in making a poor decision to make a sale,” Botti added.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, FEB. 9 Well, the benefits of the 2003 decisions by both Aloha and Hawaiian airlines to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy has finally trickled down to us, the lowly airfare consumer. That’s right, folks—Aloha and Hawaiian have fired the first shots in an inter-island airfare war! No more $200plus tickets for a flight that lasts mere minutes! Both airlines are pushing $69 fares— one-way, naturally, since we don’t want the war to get out of control too fast—on their websites. Now we’re not going to list those websites for you here, for a couple reasons.

Partly, it’s because we know that you, our readers, are pretty smart and clever and can probably find the Aloha Airlines website almost as fast as naked pictures of Halle Berry. But mostly, we’re not helping you out because the airlines haven’t given us jack. Ooohh, we’re in bankruptcy, we have no money. Boo-frickin’-hoo.

THURSDAY, FEB. 10 You know, we think we’re pretty lucky now that we can fly to and from Oahu for the price of an Xbox, but really, compared to some people, we’re pikers. And by “some people,” I mean state Senator J. Kalani English (D, 6th District). Now we’re the first to say that English is a nice guy, good legislator and all that, but clearly, he’s been taking advantage of goodies that a public official ought not to accept.

In a nutshell, English took five free flights on Hawaii Air Ambulance during 2002 and early 2003 while that company had

business before the state legislature. In addition, English didn’t report the gifts on the standard gift disclosure statements. And some people, like the Honolulu-based group Citizen Voice, don’t like that. Today they sent the media copies of Honolulu resident George Fox’s Feb. 2 complaint to Senate President Robert Bunda. In his letter, Fox says he filed the official complaint because of Bunda “had decided not to investigate this matter.” Smart choice, Bunda!

FRIDAY, FEB. 11 Didn’t realize what a well-thought-out operation former boxer Johnny “Bang Bang” Jackson was running over at the Maui Sports & Entertainment Council until I got his press release today. Headlined with the always exciting “Date Change for Tsunami Benefit Concert,” the statement details why Jackson— and, for some reason, former Mayor James “Kimo” Apana, who seems to be making nothing but good political calls lately—rescheduled their big War Memorial Stadium show. That show will now happen on Apr. 10 but had been scheduled for Mar. 27. Now it’s clear that neither Bang-Bang nor Kimo belongs to that portion of the free world which owns a calendar. I know this because if they had, those knuckleheads wouldn’t have had to send out a press release saying “Due to the 27th being Easter Sunday we have decided to reschedule.”

Now English is saying in today’s Maui News that Fox’s complaint against him is “not wellfounded.” But he doesn’t explain why, beyond

By contrast, on Feb. 8 the U.S. Army announced that a 3rd Infantry Division sergeant and captain had been convicted of “theft of money and weapons from Iraqi citizens; providing or trading seized weapons to a member of the suspected Fedaheen [Saddam Hussein’s special guerrilla force that has been killing American soldiers]” as well as “allowing unescorted access of an alleged Fedaheen member to a secure area” in Iraq in the spring of 2003. For their crimes—giving weapons to the enemy in wartime—the sergeant got busted down to private and sentenced to 12 months in prison and the captain got thrown out of the army and 16 months in prison.

Jeffrey “Roofman” Manchester, 33, was finally recaptured after six months of inspired police-dodging in Charlotte, North Carolina after having smuggled himself out of a previously escape-proof prison nearby.

According to a January profile in the San Francisco Chronicle, Manchester is a handsome, athletic, personable man who got his nickname from a multi-state series of ceiling-entry burglaries. Nobody was around and the sensors wouldn’t trip if you only put your arm in the window halfway.

It was easy—just break the window with a rock, reach in—looking out for shards of broken glass—then grabbing the stuff.

They probably didn’t know exactly what they were boosting. In the dark, like tomb robbers of old, their eyes didn’t catch the ancient Hebrew script. As in any smash and grab operation, time was minimal and the burglars’ biggest limit was the length of their reach.

A not-local Israeli woman, Esther Shahaf, has artfully crafted mazzuzot.

I see a mezuzah by artist Marc Chagall. It looks very fancy. Pieces like that are sold in just three places in the world: Europe, Israel and Maui.

“One of those, the Marc Chagall’s, were stolen in the burglary,” Elkayam tells me. “It cost $1,400. They didn’t even know what they were stealing.

“I wanted to create a store like Israel, full of crazy colors and personality,” she later tells me over Israeli hummus. “It’s my American dream.”

Some days she made money and other days she didn’t. In any case, it was a hard way to start the day.

It would have been easier to put out of her head if it hadn’t happened three times before.

Elkayam came to Maui seven years ago, with her husband from Jerusalem.

Elkayam was a supervisor for Galie Tzahal, the radio broadcast service of the Israeli Defense Forces.

Her husband, an Israeli of Moroccan extraction, owns a popular Italian restaurant in the old city. But he took to the Maui lifestyle. Soon after arriving he began yoga. Now he splits his time between Maui, India and Israel.

Elkayam’s boutique is called Dafna’s: Anything and Everything. The store sells Judaica—fancy Jewish things pertinent to Jewish culture that are hung on the wall or kept behind glass cabinets. They’re things women like to show to other women.

Things like gold-plated Seder cups and plates, hand-painted dreidl, salt and pepper shakers with artistic renderings of Jerusalem painted in desert colors, sterling silver menorahs.

Elkayam sells things made by Israeli people. One local Israeli woman, Michal

proud of her little shop. It is clean and small and tastefully designed with Israeli folk music playing in the background.

She wants to “tell them they messed with the wrong woman,” she said, speaking with her hands. She is frustrated at the lack of police progress on the repeated molestation of her store.

“They come here and don’t even take prints,” she tells me. “I say ‘excuse me,’ aren’t you going to take prints?’ They tell me, ‘no ma’am, not today.’ What is this?

This is a joke.”

Elkayam wants to make sure that this is the last time her store is violated. For the last few days a vanload of beefy, hard-eyed Israeli men have watched the place at night. They’ve all served in combat units during the intifada.

They carry no sticks or guns—just their extensive training in the art of physical torture and the precise infliction of pain.

“The police can’t help me,” Elkayam says. “[So] I go to my people. They are my protectors.”

When she found out her store had been vandalized she left a note taped onto the doorway.

She hands it to me: “ATTN TO WHOEVER BROKE INTO MY STORE. WHY DON’T YOU GET A JOB AND A LIFE AND STOP BREAKING INTO MINE” Elkayam seems very proud of this note.

Trying to start a war with Iran

Which way to Iran?

We’re already at war with Iran. The question isn’t whether or not they’ll fight back. The question is when and how.

Bush used his State of the Union address to signal that Iran is his next target of war, calling it “the world’s primary state sponsor of terror—pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people of the freedom they seek and deserve.” Though Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pledges that war against Iran “is simply not on the agenda at this point,” she issued similar assurances in 2002 when, in fact, Bush had already green-lighted war against Iraq.

“When asked [at her confirmation hearing] whether the United States’ goal was to replace the Islamic Republic [of Iran],” reports the International Herald-Tribune, Rice “did not say no.” And for good reason.

U.S. Special Forces commandos have been operating on Iranian soil for months, scoping out targets for future airstrikes.

United Press International reports that U.S. spy jets have been deployed over Iran in order to goad defense radar stations into locking in on them, revealing their positions for the coming war.

Since they declared mission accomplished in Iraq a couple years ago, the Bush Administration’s most bellicose zealots have been itching to invade Iran.

But Bush probably can’t let Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz have their way.

Afghanistan and Iraq have used up all of our available troops and cash. Even cutting and running from Iraq wouldn’t do the trick.

If 150,000 soldiers stationed in Iraq can’t defeat a few thousand resistance fighters with rockets and crude bombs, how will they fare against Iran—a nation three times the size of Iraq which has a half-million-man standing army equipped with modern hardware?

Denied their longed-for ground invasion, the neocons have fallen back to the next best thing: using Israel to launch strikes against possible nuclear and other military installations in Iran’s eastern desert.

Placing Iran at the “top of the list” of the world’s most troublesome nations during a high-profile television appearance, Cheney referenced Israel’s 1981 preemptive bombing of an Iraqi nuclear reactor as a model

for U.S. military action against Iran.

Iran already has, in Ian Bremmer’s words, “one of the most pluralist and [relatively] democratic regimes in the Middle East.” Moreover, distrust of the United States—which overthrew Iran’s democratic government in 1953, backed the Shah’s vicious dictatorship and has worked tirelessly to ruin the Iranian economy through sanctions and covert sabotage since the 1978 Islamic revolution—can hardly be overstated.

The kids may want freedom, but they don’t believe the U.S. will deliver it. And they live right next door to Iraq, where American “liberation” leaves something to be desired.

“Surgical” airstrikes would probably be even more costly to U.S. interests than an outright ground invasion. Because Iranian officials have lived under the threat of attack for 25 years, they’ve carefully concealed their extensive military infrastructure. Pentagon analysts concede that these efforts have been effective enough to deny Israel or the U.S. the ability to cripple Iran’s ability to field fighter jets or launch missiles.

Iranian leaders already feel the squeeze between U.S.-occupied Iraq and Afghanistan.

The day after an Israeli or U.S. attack, Iranian leaders would correctly surmise that failure to respond would undermine their domestic political credibility. Jumping through U.S.imposed hoops, as Saddam did during the winter of 2002-3, would be perceived by the Bushies as an indication of weakness.

The nightmare scenario happens to be the most likely. To stand a chance in its confrontation with the United States, Iran would require the support of neighboring Arab countries. But now that Iraq has been neutered by partition, civil war and occupation, Iran is the only large majority Shia nation in the Middle East.

Since many Sunnis consider Shiaism a heretical strain of Islam, Iranians would otherwise suffer alone. Were Iran to retaliate against Israel—whether responding to an attack originating from the U.S. or Israel wouldn’t matter since Iran’s missiles could only reach the latter—that would change. Arab states, forced to choose between Shia Iran and the Jewish state, would yield to popular pressure to come to Iran’s aid. If the Iranians have managed to build one nuke, they might use it against Tel Aviv. Cheney’s half-baked rehash of 1981 could fulfill every late 20th century’s worst-case scenario by setting ablaze the entire Middle East. MTW

A Man is Dying Just another day at Maui Memorial A man is dying, we’re told. He’s dying and we need to get there right away. Among my companions—various physicians and nurses at the Maui Memorial Medical Center—this takes a moment to register. There is a man not breathing, and he’s in the parking lot?

I go outside and find people in a car. It’s a family, with a woman in the driver seat, two more women in the back and two men awkwardly placed in the front passenger seat. It looks like they are fighting. One of the men is a nurse and the other is the guy who’s dying. The nurse is administering CPR. In between pumps he looks at me as if I can do something. It all seems to be happening so slowly.

I’m frustrated by my inability to intervene. A small army of doctors and nurses are now on the scene with their gurneys, defibrillation pads and stethoscopes.

The women are now out of the car and standing to the side near a small crowd that’s gathered.

The man, motionless and shockingly pale, is quickly hoisted onto a gurney, then rushed into the sterile embrace of the Emergency Room. A wideeyed young paramedic and me exchange glances.

“Yikes,” he says.

Early on during the day I spent hanging around Maui Memorial Hospital, I went to visit Dr. Jeffrey Trager. As the chairman of the ER, he’s largely responsible for the day-to-day operations of that small but vital section of the hospital. Trager is from Detroit and grew up in a largely Jewish enclave of the city. He has salt and pepper hair and a monotone voice which strangely accentuates his razor sharp sense of humor. He works a lot—full time physician hours plus an increased 20 hours or so a month fulfilling his duties as ER chairman.

“It’s fun,” he says of being chairman. “I get to meet with top dogs at the hospital, get a little say on what goes on. I’m a hands-on kind of doctor and I like the ability to see what’s going on with my ER. But, you know, like any other institution, there are a lot of politics. Hospital politics.”

Before Maui, he worked in a busy urban ER in Detroit. “I have seen it all, heard it all.” He says.

“Even though Detroit is a rough place, pain is universal. But then, so is stupidity. You have people bangin’ themselves up in the same ways everywhere you go. People drink and drive, people take unnecessary risks anywhere. I will say that here

we see a lot of water-related injuries. Whenever there are big waves, especially a south swell, we get busy.”

Then they’ll be busy today, because guys at Jaws are reporting 40-foot waves.

“Today we will see this kind of stuff,” he says, motioning toward a kid who tweaked his ankle running on the sand. “These beachy kind of injuries happen almost exclusively with visitors. It is usually some 250-pound guy from Oregon who wants to impress his 14-year-old kid. ‘Look what daddy can do, look what daddy can do.’ Daddy can try and bodysurf and get dumped headfirst, break his neck and end up a paraplegic for the rest of his life. Then it’s, ‘Look what daddy can do, daddy can do this. That’s all daddy can do after that. It’s sad.”

The ambulance has brought in a young, stringyhaired guy with a badly fractured arm.

“I just was trying to roll around in the waves and ended up getting tossed,” he says. “I landed on my arm the wrong way and I felt it snap like I twig. I am so fucking stupid.”

He says he’s a cameraman for CNN and was on a list to go to Iraq to cover the upcoming elections. “It

Meanwhile the man who has stopped breathing has started again. His wife, who up until this time has maintained her composure, is now in hysterics. She is taken away.

The man is surrounded by people. Though still unconscious, is shuddering in and out of normal breathing.

“Larry, LARRY!” shouts Trager, giving him what looks to be a noogie on his chest. “Larry are you with us?”

A nurse looks at me. “This is what we live for.

Everyday, this is what it is all about.”

“I just pulled a piece of glass from some guy’s eye,” Trager says in passing. “That was fun. You ever seen that? What happens is the metal oxidizes and you get this weird brown ring around where the metal is. Try living with that for three days I guarantee you will tear your eye out. Or try, to at least.”

It is noon and there is a lull in the action. The collective aromas of plate lunch specials sift through the sterilized air. Trager and an EMT split hairs over the etymological differences between saying “fifty cents” and “fitty cent.”

A nurse constructs a crude paper airplane. The craft’s maiden voyage flight ends in disaster, shooting in a beeline directly at another nurse, hitting her inches below her eye. She laughs it off.

“Make sure you put that in there,” she tells me.

“His name is Julien. Nurse Joo-lien.”

“Now it is slow, but this changes any minute,” says Trager. “You can get lulled into the false sense of complacency. There are these kind of moments and then Wham!—five ambulances, 10 people at the door. Whoa baby. It will happen. My philosophy is to always be aware that it will always happen.”

“We cherish moments like this,” says Nurse Cathy.

Blond with toned arms, Cathy worked in a high volume ER in Oakland before coming to Maui.

“I think Oprah should do a show on nursing,” she says.

Oprah?

“Yeah, Oprah, about how hard we work, how badly we are paid. I never hear anything about nurses except the crazy ones, who, you know, kill everyone.”

“I think 48 hours did something on nurses,” I say.

“I know Doogie Howser did.”

“Do you ever watch Scrubs?” she asks, smiling.

“Love that show. I used to watch ER but not really anymore. I watched it because I was in nursing school and they would show what we were doing.

And it was. But, we never run in the halls. That’s very important. We never run in the halls.”

Then the man who has stopped breathing, then started, stops breathing again. A call is made for other nurses. I see Cathy running in the halls. “I swear we didn’t stage this for you,” one nurse says.

His entourage sits in a conference room. They are from Independence, Missouri and are on vacation.

There are uneaten sandwiches and fruit scattered on the table.

“They were snorkeling on Molokini and on the way back to Lahaina he stopped breathing,” Trager tells me. “As of yet, we don’t know what’s going on with him. It could be many things, we can’t know until we take tests.”

The group refused an ambulance and opted instead to take a car. This could have cost their friend his life. The man, gasping like a fish, sat in the car drifting in and out of coherence while his companions got lost in Kahului looking for the hospital.

They arrived at the hospital moments before he would have died. A nurse named David saved his life with direct mouth-to-mouth CPR. Usually the risks involved make this a no-go.

“He was dying, so I just went for it,” David tells me later. “I’ve only done that once before in my career.

The other was for a nun’s mother.”

A pair of wealthy Quebecois are telling me about their Snuba trip that ended in one of their group suffering dizziness and nausea.

“It’s a slice of life,” Trager says after reviewing a file. “This guy could be the CEO of some Fortune 500 company and he is in bed next to a girl who sleeps on the beach. It’s the great equalizer. I recently worked on a guy who owned some Vegas Hotel. He would come here a few times a year and stay in the penthouse in the Four Seasons. He has some chest pain and he comes here, just like everyone else. He came here and stayed in a bed next to some surfer kid, a dishwasher. He is worth a billion easy. We don’t

“A one-way ticket from wherever has direct flights, Portland, Seattle, LA, Alaska. They buy them a ticket with the intention of keeping them here. They usually get found at the baggage claim with an empty bottle of whatever they are taking. Eventually the police are called and they end up here for the night. Usually we let them sleep until morning, then start the process of setting them up with a place to stay.”

The social worker arrives. A prim and proper woman who looks remarkably like the Church Lady from Saturday Night Live, she speaks little.

As I walk through the ER, I’m reminded of the varieties of illness and injury a person can get. An old woman has broken her foot. A nine-year-old girl has asthma. Another old lady has uterine cancer, which means she can’t poop. She passed out while trying to do so. Some other guy has a blood clot in his leg. Olaf from Switzerland fell off a boat and cut his head wide open.

Nurse Cathy finds these maladies, and the people who have them strangely relaxing.

“In Oakland, it was everyday, gunshots, stabbings, rape, murder, psych patience, AIDS… you name it,” she says. “We have that here but not so much. Not so common at all. The people here are much more respectful than in a big city, I think. The Japanese patients we see are so sweet and they have this respect for the nurses and doctors. In the city, you can be seen as an enemy.”

The homeless drunk has arrived. Suddenly he’s

“I just pulled a piece of glass from some guy’s eye,” Trager says in passing. “That was fun. You ever seen that?” care, everyone is the same.”

Like the man from Independence.

“He went so long without oxygen that he may have sustained brain damage,” says Trager. “He could be non-communicative from this day on. We gotta CAT scan him.”

We walk over to a small room. The man is stable and sleeping soundly, despite the jumble of tubes and needles snaking out of his body. He has a bloody nose.

“That’s from the tubing,” says one of the nurses.

“Very common.”

The nurses hoist the man onto the table. The scanning machine starts with a whir.

“What we are really looking for here is head injuries,” says the nurse. “Anything head, then it’s a whole different approach.”

The results say no head injuries, so that rules out brain damage. For now he will have to go into Intensive Care for more tests and observations.

Drugs have rendered him unconscious, so his family and friends have gone back to “La-hawna,” as they call it. He is all alone now, but at least he’s alive.

The crackling radio tells us the ambulance is on its way. A drunk who usually uses a walker has fallen and, amazingly enough, can’t get up. He’s being brought in from Kihei. Someone calls a social worker to arrange housing for the man.

“What sometimes happens is someone’s brother or whatever buys them a ticket to Maui,” says Trager.

“It’s becoming much more politically correct to disclose more—to say, ‘well, we tried this, and that happened, and that’s not what we wanted, etc.’

Doctors are more accessible nowadays and that creates a situation where people can be disappointed.

Doctors, although very smart people who do incredible things, aren’t Superman.”

Trager motions with his head to the unconscious snorkeler from Missouri. The man is sleeping beatifically, the shadow lines of the shades creating symmetrical patterns on his blanket.

“So you try to minimize it, minimize the situation. I mean look at this guy,” Trager says. “Remember, about him we said, ‘aw, well, they should have gotten an ambulance, shouldn’t have driven him themselves,’ but that’s life. They panicked and they did what they could. But we, as medical professionals, are sort of socialized to shift the blame, in a way, to see some sort of connection with the patient’s behavior and their illness. It’s human, and it will always be that way.

“I had a family here,” he continues. “Three people from the same family and it was after hours and it was just me. For various reasons, one after another, each member of the family conked out. One guy had to be airlifted to Queens, then another. And I am sitting here watching this family crumble in front of my eyes. It’s hard, but you learn to not internalize it.

“When you’re a 26-year-old kid out of medical school you have trauma nightmares about this stuff, but now I welcome it. From our end it’s not hard, but from the patient’s end, or their family, it’s different.

It’s one thing to lose a patient due to medical error.

But to lose a son, or a husband, you want blood.

Again, that’s the way it shall always be.” MTW

“A lot of the indigent wear out their welcome wherever they go,” Nurse Cathy tells me. “The shelters, hospitals and hostels refuse to help them because of their behavior. Some people refuse to behave and don’t want to get better.”

Another nurse, Jennifer, comes up to me.

“Can you read this?” she asks. Jennifer looks ravishing in a Peptol-Bismol pink lab-coat with matching pants and dangly Santa earrings. She thrusts a document in front of me. It looks like Farsi calligraphy with some Sanskrit thrown in.

“Easy,” she says, giggling. “It says pelvic exam and ultra sound. Easy!”

In 2002, former Rhodes scholar and Harvard Medical School graduate Dr. Atul Gawande published Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. The book, which caused tremors within the health care community, is a collection of essays that trace his evolution from student to physician. They describe in great detail the mistakes that he made in the process. While walking to check the status of the snorkeler who had stopped breathing in the parking lot, I ask Trager if he had read this book.

“No, but there is a reason why they call this the practice of medicine,” he says. “Mistakes are made.

‘Volcanic’ Jacque’s Northshore Bistro has one hell of a wine list

I’ve walked past it a hundred times.

With tiki torches lighting the warm night sky and music blaring into the Paia streets, you can’t help but notice it.

If you peek into the open-air restaurant, it’s as tropical as it gets with bamboo-lined walls and multicolored Christmas lights twisting up the trunks of rooted palm trees. Not something you’d expect in Paia. Then again, what can anyone in Paia?

And so the other night my date and I broke our usual eating habits, got all sassed out and wound up at Jacque’s. It’s obvious that it isn’t required to get all sassed out to eat at Jacque’s, as there are variously dressed diners on any night.

But hell, it was my birthday. And as usual for a young good-looking couple, we got a window seat.

I love window seats. They’re so romantic. I got to dine and stare out at drunken 20-somethings roaming the streets looking for action. Action in Paia? As I said, you should never expect anything when you’re in Paia.

The waitress came to our table promptly, which was nice, and offered us drinks. I took no time in ordering a Black Russian while my date hesitated, entranced by the wine list. By the time the server came back with a White Russian, forcing me to reorder a Black Russian, his eyes were still on the wine list. “What’s come over him?” I thought.

He doesn’t usually drink wine.

Finally I decided to take a look at this remarkable wine list—after he ordered, of course—to see what the fuss was all about. A spread of a tall wine glass adorned with a sensuously posed Renee Zellweger look-alike accompanies the title “Bubbly Blondes.” As if that’s not enough to get you thirsty, the menu is loaded with sexual innuendos.

“So Many Reds, So Little Time” heads

the red wine list, along with a vertical scale that goes from “Smoldering” to “Savage” to “Volcanic” to “Soft and Sensual.”

It’s quite an effective marketing strategy.

After all, who wouldn’t want to drink something called “Voluptuous and Full Figured?”

But right when I began wondering why “Fire Crotch” was left off the menu, it was time to order our entrees.

“Uh, Seared Ahi for me,” my date said quickly. “And she’ll have the Chicken Piccata.”

Of course we considered other options, like

the Crab and Cheese-Stuffed Salmon Wrapped in Nori. Then there was the Pork Tenderloin Brochette on a Sugar Cane Stick that I had neither tried nor even heard of. We even glanced over to the sushi bar where a wide assortment of delights sat waiting.

But who has time to think about food when there was this sexually suggestive wine list beckoning for our attention?

Our entries were delivered quickly and wonderfully, with a side of warm rolls and soft, sundried tomato butter. My date’s ahi was as per-

After our pleasant dinner—and a couple more glasses of wine—we headed home completely satisfied, intending to return some day to the enticing tropical eatery known as Jacque’s. If for no other reason than to conduct further research into that wine list. MTW

Heather Rodriguez Server, Milagros I live in Haiku and I work in Paia. With no car, my transportation is friends, roommates and sometimes hitchhiking. At first I was scared to hitchhike. I came from Atlanta, Georgia where you’d hear about girls being attacked or murdered. But on Maui I never heard of any problems. So I do it, and I’ve met a lot of nice people along the way. I feel safer here, I feel I can trust people.

In Atlanta I bartended for three years in a nightclub. That was the time of my life. I met a ton of people but I got sick of it. Being a female bartender, you’ve got to be as tough as nails to handle it or people walk all over you. I got tired of having to be that tough. I guess I’m more of a soft person. I’m really shy, too. Being a shy waitress is one thing, being a shy bartender is something else, it’s an oxymoron.

Milagros more fits who I am. I may be shy, but I can come out of my shell when I wait tables, because I know I gotta make a living.

Plus, a lot of great people work there. It’s a really comfortable place to work. I think that’s what makes it what it is. Everyone likes to sit outside and it’s the perfect people-watching spot. I find myself out there, definitely people watching. And here on Maui, everyone’s got their own style, people are so different, and accepted too.

But I do miss Atlanta. I miss it a lot. The music, my friends and my family. I just found out my brother joined the army. That scares me to death. Of all the things he could have joined, the army scares me the most. But we do a lot of emailing, postcards, and I’m sure there will be many more to come. It softens the blow a bit of living away from home for this long. MTW

[LECTURE] The percentage of water in our bodies nearly equals that of our planet’s water content. So yeah, it might be useful to find out the limits and abilities H2O may have. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese researcher and Doctor of Alternative Medicine, has been studying one aspect of this, namely the idea that “the vibrational energy projected by humans in the form of thoughts, words, ideas, intentions, and sounds has the power to alter water’s molecular structure.” He has written a two-volume book entitled The Hidden Messages in Water, Vol. 1 and 2, and was featured in the quantum physics cult favorite flick, What the Bleep Do We Know?! His studies reflect the “expressions” of water crystals that have been exposed to everything from heavy metal music to spoken prayer. He’s even gone so far as to tape positive words to bottles of distilled water and observed the results. Oh sure, he’s tried the words “love” and “gratitude” but what about “well-meaning intentions” or “I meant to call but as I was dialing your number, I tripped and the phone cord wrapped around my neck, I passed out and when I came to, your number was gone”?! Mysterious childhood friend? For me, that would be one giant jolly red walking pitcher who bellowed “Oh, yeah!” whenever I was hot or thirsty. But that’s just me.

Between Heaven and Hell Hellblazer adaptation deals in gallows humor Keanu Reeves plays the chain-smoking post-modern exorcist John Constantine, of the DC Comics Hellblazer graphic novels, in an overlong movie that falls between last year’s terrible Van Helsing and its far more competent rival Hellboy.

John Constantine’s youthful attempt at suicide, to escape his innate ability to recognize angels and demons, leaves him wandering a noir-styled Los Angeles realm between heaven and hell where he attempts to earn salvation into heaven by exorcising demons and sending them back to their scalding fountainhead.

New This Week BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE – (PG) – Drama – A lonely little girl adopts a dog, which not only helps her make friends but also helps her get closer to her father and helps brings together a small Florida town. Oh, and Dave Matthews is in it. Yeah. I hate movies like this.

CONSTANTINE – (R) – Action-Adventure, Suspense, Horror and Thriller – As our astute intern put it, this film looks like a cross between The Matrix and Devil’s Advocate. We love that good vs. evil, Heaven vs. Hell stuff! Plus, it’s got beautiful Kauai boy Keanu Reeves playing the tortured investigator of supernatural mysteries and hottie Rachel Weisz as... well, who cares. See Film Critique.

SON OF THE MASK – (PG) – ActionAdventure, Comedy – I know it’s premature to say something like this, but I think this will be the best movie of 2005. Maybe of the whole decade.

I mean, you had The Mask, and that was kind of funny, but this is about The Mask’s son! And it stars Jamie Kennedy! I didn’t think he could ever top Malibu’s Most Wanted, but this one sure looks like a winner.

Now Showing ALONE IN THE DARK – (R) – ActionAdventure, Suspense, Horror and Thriller – A detective of the paranormal, hot on the trail of the mysterious death of a friend, discovers that evil demons worshiped by the ancient Abskani culture are planning on coming back to life in the 21st century to once again take over the world.

Aw, sounds like a bad case of food poisoning to me. Just sleep it off, buddy. You’ll be all right.

ARE WE THERE YET? – (PG) – Romantic Comedy – Ice Cube stars in this light-hearted look at how a swinging bachelor takes his girlfriend’s kids on a road trip to impress her, but finds that they really only want to turn his life into a living hell. How do they come up with this stuff?

ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 – (R) – ActionAdventure, Crime/Gangster – This is a remake of John Carpenter’s second film, and hits all the usual shoot-‘em-up notes: deranged gang bent on springing an incarcerated mobster lays siege to an undermanned police station. Ethan Hawke plays the cop in charge who ends up arming Lawrence Fishburne and the other jailbirds to defend the station.

THE AVIATOR – (PG13) – Drama – This is Martin Scorsese’s 168-minute epic on Howard Hughes that includes only a brief interlude of the billionaire’s most intriguing years when he became renowned for living in secret while wearing tissue boxes on his feet and growing out his hair and fingernails to absurd lengths, all while keeping jars of his own urine close by. Stars Leonardo di Caprio as the nutty flyer/film maker and No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow.

BOOGEYMAN – (PG13) – Suspense/Horror – If you’ve ever wondered whatever happened to Xena, the Warrior Princess, wonder no more!

Lucy Lawless is back, but this time she’s playing the mom of a guy (Barry Watson) who has serious issues about some stuff that went down in the bedroom of his youth. So the guy goes back home to deal with this supposed “monstrous entity” that could be real or all in his head.

Although, I don’t know why he doesn’t act like all the other guys and just take it out on his next girlfriend. Hey, I’m just saying.

COACH CARTER – (PG13) – Drama – Inspired by true-life story of controversial high-school basketball coach Ken Carter, who received both high praise and staunch criticism when he made

FINDING NEVERLAND – (PG13) – Drama – Johnny Depp plays J. M. Barrie, the guy who wrote Peter Pan in this London, 1904 story. You remember Peter Pan, right? Sandy Duncan played him on Broadway. Also stars Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman.

HIDE AND SEEK – (R) – Thriller – Not to be confused with the 1999 film of the same name starring Daryl Hannah and Vincent Gallo, or the 1980 flick about Israel or even the 1977 War Games clone, this is a Robert DeNiro horror film about how his young daughter’s imaginary friend is actually real.

HITCH – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – Will Smith plays a matchmaker who uses less than honest methods in his work—whahhhhh???!?!—and then gets busted by a totally hot undercover reporter played by Eva Mendes. Oh, and there’s a chick in the movie named after a popular antihistamine.

HOTEL RWANDA – (PG13) – Drama – Intense movie based on the 1994 genocide that gripped Rwanda. It concerns about a small-time hotel manager (Don Cheadle) provides sanctuary to terrified residents as roving gangs slaughter thousands. The PG13 rating means they’ve probably toned down the hacking.

IN GOOD COMPANY – (PG13) – Comedy, Drama – Poor sap Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) ends up demoted from head of ad sales and has to work for a new boss, Carter Duryea (Topher Grace), who is not only half his age, but also decides to date Foreman’s hottie 18-year-old daughter Alex (Scarlett Johansson). Those naughty up-and-comers!

LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU – (R) – Comedy – A decidedly quirky Wes Anderson flick about an internationally famous oceanographer (Bill Murray), who along with his possibly long-lost son (Owen Wilson), takes his wingnut crew (headed by a brilliantly wussy Willem Dafoe) on an expedition to hunt down the elusive Jaguar Shark that killed his partner. Also along for the ride is a beautiful pregnant journalist (Cate Blanchett), the oceanographer’s estranged wife and benefactor (Anjelica Huston), as well as some other such obstacles, like pirates, bankruptcy, kidnapping, insurance concerns and Jeff Goldblum.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA – (PG13) – Drama, Musical, Suspense – It’s the classic tale—and another cinematic take on a Broadway musical, oh joy—about a mysterious masked figure who roams the undergrounds of 19th century Paris, especially lurking around (or under—naughty!) the Opera Populaire, where he tutors a beautiful young soprano.

POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE – (G) – Children, Animation - Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Roo and Tigger, too! search for the mysterious Heffalump, learning about friendship and accepting others’ differences along the way.

RACING STRIPES – (PG13) – Comedy, Drama, Kids/Family – A traveling circus accidentally leaves behind a baby zebra—I know, it happens all the time— so then the precocious zebra gets the inclination to become a racetrack-star, with a little help from his farm animal friends... Okay, is it just me or does it sound like somebody had a few too many special brownies when they came up with this screenplay?

SIDEWAYS – (R) – Comedy, Drama – This could be your typical road-tripping buddy flick, only the “buddies” in question are Miles (Paul Giamatti)—a downand-out failed novelist, middle school teacher and bitter divorcee but apt wine connoisseur—and his happygo-lucky friend Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), who has his own devious agenda for their big “wine tasting trip” before he gets married the following weekend.

Also stars Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh. WEDDING DATE – (PG13) – Romantic Comedy – This film concerns a young woman who hires a gigolo to accompany her to her sister’s nuptials. See, her exboyfriend is going to be there, and she needs to make him jealous so, um, I don’t know. Really, what the hell am I doing writing about this? There are people dying in Sudan, and I’m boosting some junk film that stars no one anyone should be concerned about.

The CD That Changed My Life AMEL LARRIEUX “INFINITE POSSIBILITIES” I was living in L.A., getting burned out and wanting a change. With Maui on my mind, everyday I was getting up and getting on the Shame Train (Public Transportation a.k.a. RTD ). Feeling bummed and wishing I could escape the chitter chatter of the wing-nuts around me, I put in this new disc that my friend gave me: Amel Larrieux’s Infinite Possibilities. Immediately I thought, “Okay, this will get me out of the funk.” From the very first song, “Get Up,” the album just flowed through with Larrieux’s soulful smooth voice and I was like, “Oh yeah! This is so what I am feeling!” and I forgot all about that 40-minute Shame Train ride. Let me just tell you that this amazing record changed my life and made me realize that I, too, have infinite possibilities. It was the turning point that made me think, “Maui, here I come!”

I was 15 when this tape—didn’t have a CD player then—came out and I swear, it might have been within a day or two of listening to this album, with the combined effects of Yo! MTV Raps, that my friends and I completely revamped our vocabularies and ambitions. Our neighborhood became “The Terrordome.” Our friends were “bassheads” and anytime I argued with my dad, he was a “non-believing sucka.” Our one friend’s golf-playing father had a closet full of trench coats and Kangol hats. He’d come home to a posse of teenage S1-Ws wearing all of his clothes, with the TV on Channel Zero, blasting the stereo. In fact, the Temple of Hip-Hop teaches H.I.P.H.O.P as the acronym “Her/His Infinite Power Helps Oppressed People.” Therefore, its importance as a cultural manifestation and means of artful communication touches the majority of the world’s population regardless of color or environment. Really, I’m Shy Who doesn’t love the fun and frolic of a good belly dance? Certainly not the fine gentlemen attendees last Friday at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku. BJ and I were there too, and we noticed one lascivious male patron appreciating the wiles of a particularly stunning midriffbaring dancer with a pair of really nice, big… eyes. The man, seeing that the dancer’s boyfriend was standing off to the side, turned back and beamed at him.

“Wow, you are one lucky guy!” said the on-looker. The boyfriend smiled.

“Does she practice at home?” asked the man, practically panting. “Do you watch her?”

My heart went out to the boyfriend. But you do get what you pay for.

I’m talking enhancements here, people. C’mon.

The next day, I visited with baby Blue at the French Connection in Honokowai, whilst Amy sold her adult wares. Later, Sasha and I attended an opening for local artist Patrick Dunne at the LiveWire Café. World electronica guru DJ El Gato was spinning tunes as we swilled and schmoozed with the Beautiful People of Paia. Soon, Elan and his date showed up to people-watch with Sasha and make fun of me as the social butterfly I vehemently deny being. Hey, I’m shy. But if lovely people insist on talking to me, I certainly won’t bat them away with a stick.

So I smiled and chatted with Jesse, as he righteously insisted that he came not to be among the black-clad cool kids cavorting. No, no! For he and he alone had come to see The Art. What nerve! What gall! What—hey, nice camou!

Afterwards, Sasha and I went to the SandBar for one drink. Just one, really. Then we went to Neptune’s in Kihei, where we met up with a charming man named Miguel who made me do what no man has been able to make me do before. The most loathsome act, an act previously reviled, detested and profaned.

He made me drink gin.

On Sunday, a big group of us went to dinner and TBB uncharacteristically downed a lot of Long Island Iced Teas. Then we went to the MACC to see Makana and Jason Mraz, two young musician dudes who are carrying on the current trend of folk rock/pop that is so popular across campuses blaring Jack Johnson and John Mayer nationwide. Also, Kim thought Makana was really cute.

The Castle Theater was full of excitedly screeching adolescent girls and their smirky, point-scoring boyfriends. I even think I saw teens holding banners like “I Love You Jason” and “We Wanna More Makana.”

Tristan Prettyman was an awesome female singer and Makana played slack key guitar beautifully but TBB fell asleep, which isn’t really an insult—TBB falls asleep at any show not featuring Jango Fett or Lando Calrissian. Anyway, the trio of young girls sitting in front of us kept looking back at TBB and giggling. Then he woke up suddenly, leaned forward and asked the girls who the next guy up—Jason Mraz—was and what kind of music he plays.

“Is it country? Or does he rawk out?!” TBB asked, throwing up an Il Cornuto salute—the international “horned hand” sign of rock and roll.

The girls giggled some more, then looked again at TBB and his Western shirt and metrosexually-mussed bed head. Meanwhile, Makana said the next song was the 1982 Yaz cover of “Only You,” and that he was only three years old when it came out.

Kim was crestfallen.

“Yeah, great. I was in high school then,” she said.

Even so, Makana was silky smooth and entertaining, even introducing his original tunes with a joke or two.

“Why do girls fake orgasms?” he asked, a bit shyly.

“Because guys fake foreplay.”

After the show, Lahainaluna High School student Kellie said this really old lady—she must’ve been, like, 30 or something—was sitting in front of her with way better seats and that, like, totally wasn’t fair ‘cuz she bought the tickets, like, last Friday and stuff.

On the afternoon of stupid Valentine’s Day, Kim and I drank tequila and margaritas at Hecocks in Lahaina until Sonja got off work and joined us with her fantastic 50-pound tropical flower arrangement.
