From the Editor I think that guy standing in line behind me was right I was standing in line at my local big box retailer the other day buying some household appliances, a linen or two and one of those giant bags of popcorn when someone who looked like a guy I didn’t know tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Hey, Mister, aren’t you that guy I see on television every now and then hawking metal detectors?”

I told him I was not.

“Yeah, but you really look like that guy,” he said. “Well, if you’re not him, then you must be that fellow who always brings the water bottles by our office every three weeks or so. Say, you know we’ve had a few empties lying around a while now. I hope you’re planning on making another delivery pretty soon because we get awful thirsty in the office-” “Look, Sir,” I told him, taking care not to drop the popcorn bag, linens or household appliances on the floor. “I do not know who you are. I have never seen you before.

And I most certainly do not deliver bottled water to your or anyone else’s office. I happen to edit a newspaper.”

“Oh,” the gentleman said. “That’s cool.

Say, you don’t know the name of a good bottled water delivery guy, do you? I mean, getting good water is important, you know.”

I made my purchases and went on my way, not thinking much of the encounter.

But when I got home, I couldn’t get the man’s words out of my head.

“Getting good water is important.”

I’m at a loss to think of wiser words. You see, that gentleman who so rudely interrupted me when I was standing in line was actually on to something profound. His quest for “good water,” as he put it, was the rawest, most succinct statement of man’s search for meaning I’ve ever heard.

You see, that man was talking about our

ongoing, eternal struggles to better our lives.

No man worth anything asks for “bad water,” and mere “water” alone is hardly satisfactory.

That man specifically asked for “good water.”

He was asking for what we all secretly want, desire, even lust after. He was asking for a better life. The only difference between him and that cranky old coot buying the 12-pack of toilet paper standing behind us was that this guy actually said what was on his mind.

Not nearly enough of us ask for what we truly want in life. When challenged, we don’t say what’s really on our minds.

Well, damn it, this is going to change. From now on, I’m not going to be afraid to tell people that I want good water, too. And I want the whole world to know it!

Seriously, who is so pathetic that he or she would steal a tree? I just opened a new store in Kihei and decided to decorate the entryway with a tree. This tree was given to me when I moved to Maui in 1991. I’ve kindly nurtured it ever since. Since I spend all of my time in the store now, I thought I’d bring the tree from home and plant it in the store to keep it from getting lonely. Evidently, some loser was so desperate for a lanky, seven-foot money tree that he or she had to take mine. I guess the tree wasn’t the loneliest one after all. So, I just want to tell the degenerate thief who stole my tree that, even though we call it a money tree, that doesn’t mean it actually produces money. So please stop staring at it, return it and then go out and get a job!

The old guy who still eats his vegetables William Harris’ favorite meal is a smoothie. He says he drinks it every morning. Makes it himself, too, which isn’t too difficult considering it only contains strawberries, oranges, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds and yeast. It’s got a lot of carbohydrates, sure, but it’s also got just about all the nutrients a person needs in a day.

Oh, if only more medical doctors were like Harris. On Dec. 8, the doctor, nutritionist and co-founder of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii spoke of all the good things you can put in your body. He began his lecture before 30 or so people—virtually all of which, judging by their trim figures, already adhere to some sort of nutritious diet—by showing video footage of him skydiving.

“And how old did you say you were?” asked one guy in the audience.

“Seventy three,” Harris said.

“Okay, good,” the guy said.

Food Cops The following tale is taken straight from official complaints and inspection reports on file with the State of Hawaii Department of Health Food Safety office.

The complainant was “eating a double cheeseburger [and] found what looked like a roach leg in the burger about the diameter of a penny,” reported the sanitarian. Then the complainant “took the food back to the workers and explained what happened and asked for her money back. But the complainant said, “they began talking in Filipino to each other.” On Nov. 15 the sanitation department conducted an investigation. The manager who was working at the time of the incident stated that, “The cockroach leg was a burnt piece of burger.” The manager further alleged that the complainant “was emotional [and] cussing at employees [and] demanding her money back.”

For Americans, deciding what to eat sometimes seems more difficult than figuring out what’s wrong with the car or how to fill out tax returns. We seem to instinctively understand that the brightly colored storefronts called “McDonald’s” and “Taco Bell” aren’t the best indicators of good sustenance, but seem totally lost when it comes to diets. Should we eat lots of fish, even if there’s an R in the month?

Are carbs good for us or the enemy? Can I really get skinny by only eating prime rib? Is that baked potato going to kill me? And so on.

“When I came out of medical school I didn’t know anymore about nutrition than I did when I went in,” said Harris, who added that he became a vegan in the early 1960s, shortly after he left medical school.

Harris spent much of his talk explaining why fresh fruits and vegetables are better for us than ground beef or sour cream chocolate cake. Twenty years ago school children would have ridiculed such a talk as painfully elementary—but 20 years ago, we didn’t have the Atkins Diet to deal with.

Named for Dr. Robert C. Atkins—who was actually classified as “obese” when he died in 2003—the diet basically turns decades of nutritional thought on its head, advocating that people eat lots of steak and meat and as little pasta and bread as possible. It has, to say the least, been enormously popular.

“He was popular because he said good things about bad foods,” said Harris. Briefly outlining other fad diets through the years, Harris ridiculed “nutritionists” who called for eating nothing but brown rice, limiting fluid intake and denouncing fresh fruits.

Interestingly, Harris didn’t totally denounce the idea that carbs are bad. Indeed, when he mentioned that low-carb dietician Barry Sears says the human race hasn’t evolved to the point that it can eat grains and breads and still be healthy, Harris said, “I

think he’s right.

“The food industry has its fingers in the bread,” he said. “They add sugar, salt and fat— to get you addicted to it.”

Harris went through a nutrient analysis of just about everything we eat. At the top were green leafy vegetables—Romaine lettuce, swiss chard, parsley, stuff like that. They’ve pretty much got everything we need—more calcium, for instance, than can be found in any dairy product.

Some vegetables and fruits—coconut, for instance—have a lot of plant fats. But Harris downplayed that this was a problem.

“Fat is an essential part of nature,” he said.

“There would be no life on this planet if there was no fat… I doubt if any plant fat will plug your arteries.” MTW

The bright yellow cover of the Department of Liquor Control’s 2004 Annual Report says “June 2004,” but it wasn’t handed out to the Board of Adjudication until the Dec. 2, 2004 hearing.

And that’s a shame, because the report mentioned the Board a lot—mostly, how it’s really been dropping the hammer on liquor licensees lately.

“The imposed penalties are indicative of the Board’s intention to deal severely with licensees who are found guilty of violations,” stated the Annual Report with a surprising amount of venom. “The Board was presented with 35 complaint and accusation cases comprising 65 charges during the fiscal year,” it added, though with somewhat less venom.

A small chart labeled “Comparative Summary of Adjudication Actions Taken” shows a mixed-bag of LC actions throughout fiscal years 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Whereas the 2002 and 2003 Boards of Adjudication found 17 and six licensees not guilty of the charges levied at them, respectively, the 2004 Board handed down exactly zero not guilty findings. There were six dismissals of charges, which was up from the four in 2002 and three in 2003, but they hardly count when compared to the fact that the 2004 Board never once found a case where they explicitly determined that a licensee was innocent of the charges.

The 2004 Board handed down three license suspensions—the same as 2002 and one more than in 2003—and, for the first time in at least three years, revoked a license.

Surprisingly, the chart shows that the 2004 Board actually handed down less fines— 53—than in the previous two years. In 2002, the Adjudication Board slapped down 63 fines, imposing another 74 in 2003. Of course, the report doesn’t note that inflation has crept into the fines imposed by the Adjudication Board.

The Board doesn’t seem to give out many $500 or $1,000 fines anymore. In addition, the Board often fines licensees in excess of that requested by the prosecuting attorney’s office.

“It’s known throughout the state that our rules are more stringent,” Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama said during a Dec. 2, 2004 Adjudication Board hearing discussion on how other Hawaiian islands don’t require liquor licensees to card everyone.

“No wonder they’re going to adopt Maui rules,” said Board member Ron McOmber.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, DEC. 8 Ordinarily, the parasailors and other so-called “thrillcraft” would be considering this their last week to jet around the waters between Maui and Lanai before those pesky, selfish whales swim in to put the word “hump” in “humpback.” But then in the summer a lawsuit filed by two parasailing companies—UFO Chuting of Hawaii and Ka’anapali Tours—got the ban overturned. Whale lovers everywhere—okay, pretty much just around here—were outraged. And frankly, the thought of some yahoo from Idaho tethered to a parachute and zipping over whale sanctuary does fill the mouth with a particular type of bile. But what’s this?

The Maui News reports today that U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye reports that State Senator Roz Baker managed to get the ban banned. Apparently, Baker wrote a tiny provision that Inouye then got tacked onto an omnibus spending bill—can I get three cheers for riders!—that’s already moved through congress and awaits President George W. Bush’s signature.

And that should happen really soon—or whenever Dick Cheney gets around to teaching Dubya cursive writing.

THURSDAY, DEC. 9 Celebrity chef Wofgang Puck—maker of fine quality frozen pizzas—blew onto Maui today with these cold winds we’ve been having these last few days. Okay, so he was here for a book signing. Anyway, there was a reception committee set up outside his Spago restaurant at the Four Seasons Wailea to meet him, greet him and generally show their utter displeasure at his restaurants serving veal and foie gras, which, for those who don’t frequent snooty French restaurants, is duck or goose liver that’s been swelled to 10 times its normal size through force-feeding. The activists’ press release also mentioned a

couple websites that listed local restaurants that have refused to serve either butchered calves or fat duck livers. And while we salute such establishments for their activism, anyone familiar with the places can tell they’re not exactly making a great sacrifice in their refusal.

Pita Paradise, Blue Lagoon, Stopwatch Sports Bar and Grill, Kobe, Thai Chef and the vegetarian place Fresh Mint are just some of the brave shops who’ve swept veal and bloated duck livers from their menus.

FRIDAY, DEC. 10 Got a press release today for something calling itself the Save the Manatee Club, based in Maitland, Florida. “Great holiday gift for people everywhere,” it exclaims. “Adopt a manatee! When it comes to holiday gift giving, sometimes it’s the BIG things that count.

Adopting an endangered manatee from Save the Manatee Club is a huge way to spark pleasure and appreciation among family and friends.” Now I’m sure the people behind this have the best of intentions—speedboats are killing these already endangered manatee at an alarming rate—but come on! This has got to be the height of irresponsibility. Who on Earth, except for the filthy rich, has room to adopt a manatee? Those things can grow to weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds. What are you going to do, just plop the thing in your swimming pool? Hello! Sure, it’ll keep it safe from Sea Doos and such, but they can’t live in chlorinated water! Idiot! And I have no idea what those giant things eat, but I imagine it’s a lot of something every day. Who except for big stars, corporate tycoons and perhaps auto mechanics have the kind of dough to blow trying to raise such a creature? I mean really—oh wait, I just read through to the end of the release. They want you to donate money to “adopt” the manatee, not actually adopt it.

Yeah, I guess that might work, too.

You’ve just figured out why Central Maui residents yesterday heard a loud BOOM in the general vicinity of Pu’unene and saw all this smoke rising out of the sugar cane… Hey, this high-priced tomato crisis is just temporary, right? Just a smaller than usual mainland crop caused by bad weather, correct? I mean, I went to Subway today, and they were charging 50 cents if you wanted tomatoes on your sandwich. Fifty cents! I can’t afford that, but I don’t know how long I can stomach tomato-less sandwiches.

declares—shockingly so, if you’ve never read Maui Time—that “some” want cruise ships to start adhering to actual labor and environmental laws, as opposed to the ridiculous honor-system “memoranda of understanding” that they currently hold with the great State of Hawaii. But the real journalistic money shot comes way deep in the piece, when Robert Kritzman, Norwegian Cruise Lines’ vice president in charge of Hawaii operations said, “We think [Hawaii] has the opportunity to become another Alaska.” Wouldn’t that be lovely? Alaska is a huge destination for cruise lines—so much so that there are towns that solely exist for the lines’ benefit. Unless there’s a big ship anchored off shore, the town is boarded up.

But when the cruise ship pulls in, the town is suddenly open for business, selling all manner of food and useless souvenirs. Wouldn’t that be just wonderful for Hawaii?

The Maui News reports that the United States Geological Survey—the go-to federal agency for all things geological and, due to a recent government restructuring, roller derby—says Maui’s streams have been getting, well, less wet over the last 90 years. The reason, at least in theory, is that the state has simply seen less rainfall than it used to.

And the reason for that? Look, I don’t want to use the term “global warming”—oops, just did… According to a Farm Sanctuary press release just sent out, the Four Seasons’ chefs have announced that they have reconsidered serving foie gras at their hoity-toity Opus Wine Dinner. The reason? Too much bad publicity surrounding all those animal rights activists who showed up at the resort on Thursday to protest notorious foie graslover Wolfgang Puck’s appearance. See? Taking a little ruckus to the streets now and then—even in snooty Wailea—can translate into good results.

Each did succeed in winning nearly 30 percent of the vote. Peter Stevenson, the losing candidate for Vermont lieutenant governor, appeared at the only televised debate with a fake arrow through his head and blood on his clothes. And Bruce Borders won his race, becoming the Indiana General Assembly’s only Elvis impersonator.

Losing Pennsylvania congressional candidate Arthur Farnsworth, who ran on an anti-tax platform, was arrested three days after the election for tax evasion.

NO FRENCH TICKLERS? The Chicago Sun-Times reported in November that Illinois officials had decided to spend $115,000 in federal money to distribute 2.4 million condoms to help reduce sexually transmitted diseases

among the young, but also concluded that the young might need special incentives to actually use the condoms. Consequently, bureaucrats decided that 900,000 would be in colors (orange, green, red or blue) and that 300,000 others would be flavored (orange, lemon, grape, cherry), to encourage their use in oral sex. State Sen. Steve Rauschenberger objected to the distribution of what he called “French ticklers” and suggested that all condoms should be “army green, utilitarian, lowpriced.” Governor Rod Blagojevich subsequently eliminated the colors/flavors option.

Spending Christmas at Wal-Mart The other night I was walking down the crowded aisles at Wal-Mart in Kahului. I walked past the power tools, linens, bowls, pressed-wood furniture and those giant tubs of salted pretzels. There were lots of kids over by the video games and lots more adults in the checkout lines.

Intermixed with all of them were bluevested “associates”—the company’s Orwellian euphemism for “drones”—running around, checking prices on hand scanners, restocking shelves and generally looking really damn tired.

It’s likely that more Americans will look to Sam Walton’s megastores to play Santa Claus this Christmas than any other retailer. And why not? According to Fortune’s hagiographic 2003 article “One Nation Under Wal-Mart,” Wal-Mart is America’s biggest supplier of “DVDs… groceries, toys, guns, diamonds, CDs, apparel, dog food, detergent, jewelry, sporting goods, video games, socks, bedding and toothpaste—not to mention its biggest film developer, optician, privatetruck fleet operator, energy consumer and real estate developer.

“Wal-Mart is Fortune’s most admired company,” wrote Fortune reporter Jerry Useem. “More accurately, you could say corporate America belongs to Wal-Mart.”

But what’s it like to be one of the 1.4 million “associates” at America’s “most admired” company during the holiday season? The answer, naturally, is that it’s tough.

You see, one of the biggest ways the late Sam Walton was able to make his big-box

retailers into the nation’s largest and richest corporations was by putting his “associates” in a labor vise. Simon Head details this in his scathing Dec. 16 New York Review of Books article “Inside the Leviathan.”

“While its workforce has one of the best productivity records of any U.S. corporation, it has kept the compensation of its rank-and-file workers at or barely above the poverty line,” wrote Head. “As of last spring, the average pay of a sales clerk at Wal-Mart was $8.50 an hour, or about $14,000 a year, $1,000 below the government’s definition of the poverty level for a family of three… To keep the growth of productivity and real wages far apart, Wal-Mart has reached back beyond the New Deal to the harsh, abrasive cap-

Useem left out any discussion of WalMart’s Dickensian labor practices except for a single sentence in his 4,000+word story’s penultimate paragraph: “For lest we forget, America’s most admired company has also been one of its most maligned, recently attracting headlines about class-action lawsuits alleging that associates were forced to work paid overtime.”

class-action lawsuit in U.S. history. In 2001, six female Wal-Mart “associates” sued the company on behalf of the 1.6 million women who currently and used to work for Wal-Mart. The suit alleges sexual discrimination on the part of Wal-Mart management—paying male counterparts more simply because they’re male and other assorted “glass ceiling” actions, all of which are, at least theoretically, illegal. So far, 115 women have filed depositions in the case.

I spent a while walking through the Kahului Wal-Mart, and I never once saw any “associates” taking a break or even talking to each other. The reason is that Wal-Mart consider such activity “time theft” or “stealing time” from the company. “Associates” can be disciplined, sometimes

harshly, for engaging in such behavior.

Especially if management feels that “associates” are “stealing time” to organize. God help them then. According to Head, every Wal-Mart manager has a “Manager’s Toolbox to Remaining Union-Free.” If a manager suspects any of the “associates” are seeking to join a local union, there’s a special Bentonville hotline to call. “A high-powered union-busting team will then be dispatched by corporate jet to the offending store,” wrote Head.

In his article, Head wrote of the only known case in which Wal-Mart workers succeeded in organizing. In 2000, some Texas Wal-Mart meatcutters voted to join the local Union of Food and Commercial Workers in an election certified by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Wal-Mart responded by firing all the meatcutters and closing their department. Such actions are illegal, and the NLRB ordered Wal-Mart to rehire the workers. Because U.S. labor laws are toothless these days, nothing’s changed and Wal-Mart is appealing.

But even if the company is eventually made to comply with U.S. labor laws, their only punishment will be to give the fired workers their back pay. Wal-Mart will face no punitive fines for sacking people who dared organize in a perfectly legal fashion.

After all, Wal-Mart is an “admirable” corporation. Who cares that managers have been disciplined for allowing “associates” to work too much overtime? Or that a 2004 House of Representatives Education and Workforce Committee report said a standard 200employee Wal-Mart costs the federal government about $420,000 a year to provide welfare and housing assistance to the “associates?” Isn’t that what America’s all about?

So Fluffy Tasty Crust sells pancakes like they were hotcakes You can get a lot of different kinds of stuff at Tasty Crust in Wailuku. They’ve got chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, saimin, loco Moco and onion rings. Of course, you can get those things pretty much anywhere. What you won’t get anywhere else are the famous Tasty Crust pancakes.

“They are so fluffy, see?” one guy said, grimly poking and prodding his pancake with his fork. “Most other places, the

But not at Tasty Crust. In fact, they’re not even called pancakes. Pancakes are for chumps. Just say the word out loud.

“Pancakes.” See what I mean?

At Tasty Crust they’re called hotcakes.

They’re big, fat things, served steaming hot and are soft and cover the entire plate.

If you cut them into pieces, they look like the insides of a NERF ball or a couch cushion. Most people are content with eating two hotcakes, but since you think you’re all bad and shit, try eating three or four. Then see how tough you are.

“It’s our signature dish,” said Curtis Takaoka, the current owner. “We serve on average about 800 per day. It’s something that we serve at all hours of the day, from the time we open our doors, to when we close. People want those pancakes.”

The Tasty Crust hotcake comes with a big huge scoop of butter. It sits on top of the pancake, then slowly melts all over the place, mixing with the syrup into sticky goo. But it’s all good because the pancake is like a sponge and soon the syrup and the butter absorbs into the pancake. Just vanishes mysteriously into the soft mass of hot cake.

It is really bad for you to eat this kind of stuff, but please don’t trip about that.

If you were so worried about your health, you wouldn’t be eating at a place called “Tasty Crust” in the first place.

I know a guy who likes to get his hotcakes with a scoop or two of mac nut ice cream on top. This one girl I know likes hers with nothing on them, no butter or syrup. Not anything. In fact, she doesn’t even like to use utensils: She just gleefully rolls it up with her hands and eats it just like a burrito.

Whenever I eat at Tasty Crust I always see some chick feeding a baby chunks of hot cake with thick rivers of gooey syrup dripping down the kid’s chin and down its neck.

The Samoan women wear big floral church hats like ladies in the South and the guys have geometric tattoos and thick heavy braids that make them look rather fearsome.

One friend of mine always seems to see Democrats whenever he goes to Tasty Crust.

One time he saw former mayor and local Democratic Party head James “Kimo” Apana.

Another time he got to shake hands with Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich when he was here stumping for John Kerry.

Crust because it’s very much a local place. You can tell by the parking lot. It’s always filled up with vehicles that have the bright yellow “Reinstated Hawaiian Nation” bumper stickers. Sometimes, the stickers have a graphic of Calvin, from Calvin and Hobbes, in pious worship in the silhouette in a humongous cross.

Other times we see Calvin depicted urinating on a Chevy logo.

“The name Tasty Crust actually came to the island right after World War II,” said Takaoka.

“Joe Kazuki, who ran the Home Maid Bakery just down the street, made the name and my father, Mike, liked the sound of it and used it for the restaurant.

“Right behind us, see there, was the mill and all these single plantation workers would come here, two, three times a day to eat,” he continued. “On the holidays, my old man would want to close, take the day off. My mom wouldn’t let him. ‘These are like our family. We have to take of them.’ Yeah, dad acted like he didn’t like it, but they were his friends, too. I think we have lost some of that, the family aspect of it.

We have become lost in our own worlds, too individualistic.” MTW

My family and I originally moved out to Maui from Michigan about six years ago. My mom is a nurse and my dad had various jobs but always looked for a family business to buy and finally found the store. My older brother runs the office and I get to work in the deli and store.

My job includes ordering all the beer we carry in the store. We have the best selection of both beer and wine of any other upcountry store with 50 to 60 different beers to choose from as well as organic blends in both. I tend to like dark and full flavored beers like ales and porters but we carry all the average domestic and imports too and have some kind of beer on sale every week. Right now my favorite seasonal beer is Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome. My dad also started a wine room with a unique wine selection including California, French, and Australian wines.

I usually come to work in the afternoons and finish up any stocking and random maintenance projects that need to be done. Then, most of our business comes in the afternoon and evenings. Most people like to stop at the deli on their way home from work to get things for dinner.

People Upcountry come in to buy our marinated beef. It comes from Maui cattle and is the best on the island. We get fresh fish every day from local fishermen and our fresh fish and ahi poke are really popular, too.

We usually have pretty consistent business until 10:00 p.m., when we close. I like working Upcountry in a small town, family environment. I get to work with cool people and we all help each other when anyone needs it. Everyone is really mellow and happy around here. MTW

Maverick Cellist Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater [MUSIC] It isn’t often you see the words “maverick cellist” attached to someone’s name, but in the case of 32-year-old Matt Haimovitz, it kinda works. His bio describes him as an Israeli-born hipster who drives “across the country in a hybrid car with just enough room for his cello and his CDs.” He’s played in pubs, jazz clubs, coffeehouses and pizza parlors. Itzhak Perlman mentored him. He studied at Julliard. He plays music by Sanford, Bach and Hendrix. One of his most popular acts is to play the “Star-Spangled Banner” the way Hendrix did, except with his cello. He’s played with the Israel, London, Berlin and New York Philharmonics. Most likely alone among the world’s cellists—great or otherwise—he’s been featured recently in the Boston Globe, Newsweek, the Associated Press, the Albany Times-Union, National Public Radio (NPR) and the Toronto Star. Oh, and now this paper. “Haimovitz says that seeing punk rock fans sitting next to classical music afficionados in a smoky dive bar has awakened him to the power of music to bring people together,” reported NPR earlier this year.

They’ve been compared to Dexter Gordon and Count Basie, and you don’t really have to say much beyond that. Their album Sounds of the City spent a month this spring on the JazzWeek Top 50 chart. Scorsese Soars Howard Hughes’ genius revealed through Scorsese’s mastery

Martin Scorsese finally delivers the movie that lives up to his promise as a master of his craft. After a string of miscalculated films such as Kundun, Bringing Out The Dead and Gangs Of New York audiences have an opportunity to grasp the brilliance of Scorsese’s encyclopedic knowledge of filmmaking and his visionary ability to work with a broad dramatic palate of passion, personality and milieu.

Leonardo DiCaprio gives an eloquent and sympathetic portrayal of Howard Hughes, as one of the 20th century’s most creative and tragically flawed figures, that is as credible as it is a pure joy to behold.

Screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator) deserves special praise for his terse script that emphasizes Hughes’ life from his

1920s independent directorial movie effort to his 1940s congressional showdown over military contracts with the U.S. government to provide airplanes during World War II. Scorsese opens the film with an introduction scene of Hughes as a child being bathed by his mother during a flu quarantine. The darkly lit scene resonates with the opening of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. The lasting effects of Hughes’ adolescent experience with germs and his mother’s strict warnings will inform every aspect of his personal and private adult life.

From its dynamic introduction of the 21year-old Hughes working on the set of his dogfight-themed epic war movie Hell’s Angels, Scorsese sets a hot tempo for the story that reflects the rapid-fire mind of it’s larger-thanlife protagonist. As the first act of the film focuses on Hughes’ relentless effort to fulfill his cinematic vision in spite of Hollywood rivals, we are drawn into his innate engineering ability as a pilot to fearlessly design and redesign airplanes that he daringly flies to assist in shooting his movie.

Although Hell’s Angels was already the most expensive film ever made when it finished shooting, Hughes insisted on reshooting it because he was unhappy with the midair dogfights that lacked background clouds to give the audience a reference for the rapid speed of the planes. But by the time he had refilmed the sequences, sound had entered into movies with Al Jolsen’s The Jazz Singer, and Hughes insisted on reshooting his film again to give audiences the most entertaining experience he could. The episode provides a microcosm for Hughes’ astuteness and nervous perfectionism that paid off in spades when Hell’s Angels was

It’s during the daily grind of Hughes’s filmmaking experiences that Scorsese and DiCaprio lock in on the dueling aspects of the man that enabled him to create on a grand scale and pace that was unimaginable to even those near him. The clincher here is Scorsese’s masterful blending of design aspects and seamless digital technology to create a look for The Aviator that is similar to the two-strip and three-strip Technicolor film that Hughes used for his films.

The appearance is lush and seductive without drawing attention to itself as occurred with the sleep-inducing look of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The flight sequences are, at turns, poetic, striking and surprising as they instill in the viewer Hughes’ intense appreciation for aviation, thanks to cinematographer Robert Richardson’s keen eye.

The introduction of Katherine Hepburn into Hughes’ personal world in the early ‘30s is marked by Cate Blanchett’s extraordinary rendition of the legendary actress. Ms. Blanchett’s unmistakable visage is momentarily unrecognizable when she enters the screen during a round of golf with the instantly charmed but caught off guard Howard Hughes. The romantic chemistry between Hepburn and Hughes becomes a touchstone for the audience to identify with the characters via a collective subconscious idea of the cultural icons as unique people somehow cut from similar wood. Needless to say, the chemistry between DiCaprio and Blanchett is a palpable thing that audiences will automatically respond to.

The couple’s ideal intimate life begins to crack when Hepburn invites him to meet her openly socialist family in Connecticut. As the family condescends to Hughes at their dinner table, Hughes observes a side of Kate that he is unable to mitigate. The scene is a brilliant and complex example of Hughes navigating a social situation where openly ignorant intelligent people challenge his immense intellect and charisma.

As Hughes’ nervous tics and hygienic obsessions increasingly plague him, he presses more into his desire for speed that sees him break the world speed record in 1936 in the H-1 Racer that he personally designed without any formal training in aeronautics. Audiences will be flabbergasted by one spectacular crash landing sequence—there are two—that is a model of visual style and cinematic organization.

The Aviator is a glorious biographical view of Howard Hughes as a futurist capable of melding, with his own hands, airplanes and airlines—he did own TWA. It is also a story about the enormous adversities he rose above in order to achieve his deeply personal mission. The triumph of the film is the way that it unites the audience with its subject in a way that enables you to share a quality of genius and generosity that is rarely attained in life and in film. MTW

CLOSER – (R) – Drama/Comedy – Another of Jude Law’s many, many 2004 pictures. This one teams him and three others in a story of four strangers who have chance encounters and overlapping attractions. Sounds hilarious. Also stars Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.

FINDING NEVERLAND – (PG13) – Drama – Johnny Depp plays J. M. Barrie, the guy who wrote Peter Pan in this London, 1904 story. You remember Peter Pan, right? Sandy Duncan played him on Broadway. Also stars Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX – (PG13) – Action/Adventure – This ridiculous remake of a ridiculous 1965 Jimmy Stewart picture stars Dennis Quaid as the pilot of a rickety old cargo plane that crashes in the Gobi Desert with a cargo hold full of people dumb enough to fly in a rickety old cargo plane across the Gobi Desert.

Also stars a bunch of actors who should have known better.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS – (PG13)Action/Adventure/Foreign – This movie takes place near the end of China’s Tang Dynasty, which was, well, a while ago. Anyway, two cops arrest this hot dancer who has underworld ties, then decide that she’s too hot to bring downtown so they escape with her on some kind of perilous journey. Cool.

LEMONY SNICKET’S: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS – (PG13) – Comedy/Family – It says “comedy,” but it stars Jim Carrey, so how funny can it be? This is the story of three little orphans who end up living with a bunch of odd relatives, including a schmo named Lemony Snicket and some dastardly fellow named Count Olaf, played by Carrey.

Now Showing ALEXANDER – (R) – Action/Adventure – Oliver Stone’s big war epic, this stars Colin Farrell as the world’s most famous conqueror and Angelina Jolie as his equally ambitious mother. What can be said—the guy took over the known world by the time he was 32. Not much to it really, except possibly that he, you know, really enjoyed the company of men. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but he did call his soldiers “Companions.” I’m just saying. Also stars Val Kilmer and Anthony Hopkins.

BLADE: TRINITY – (R) – Action/Adventure, Suspense/Horror – The third and quite possibly— we’re hoping—the last in Wesley Snipe’s ultra-hip vampire series. In this adventure, half-vampire Blade (Snipes) is pursued by the FBI, teams up with a bunch of vampire hunters and goes after Dracula, who I think is the original vampire or something like that. Also stars Kris Kristofferson, Jessica Biel and Parker Posey, of all people.

BRIDGET JONES: EDGE OF REASON – (R) – Romantic Comedy – A continuation in following the neurotic trials and insecure tribulations of kinda plump and totally British Bridget (Renée Zellweger) as she thinks and talks to death her perfect relationship with stable Mark (Colin Firth) and her questionable, ego-conqest relationship with former smarmy boss, Daniel (Hugh Grant, who else?).

NATIONAL TREASURE – (PG) – Action/Adventure – Nicholas Cage and Diane Kruger star in this quest to find some incredible treasure hidden by our nation’s founding fathers, who were nice enough to plant clues on the back of $1 bills. Sean Bean, as usual, plays a “ruthless adversary” in their search to unlock the secret to what the movie calls a 2,000-year-old mystery. Sounds great—wait, 2,000? Um, isn’t the country just—wait, let me get my calculator—228 years old?

So it’s a 228-year-old mystery, right? Well, that doesn’t sound like such a big deal.

OCEAN’S TWELVE – (PG13) – Action, Adventure, Romance, Thriller, Crime – This is the heist caper that out-heists the previous heist caper Ocean’s Eleven, which in itself was a remake of the horrendously awful Rat Pack-starring Ocean’s 11. This time around, the band of cons and thieves gets together again to rip off someone really rich in Europe to pay off the Vegas casino guy they ripped off in the first movie. Stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and all the rest.

RAY – (PG13) – Musical Drama – The story of Ray Charles, blind from age seven, who famously merged Gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues music, all while fighting drug addiction and Southern segregation, eventually becoming one of the greatest American pianists of the 20th century. They call their world Bikini Bottom, people! Do I have to spell it out for you? Also stars David Hasselhoff as himself.

First Light Academy screenings on Maui Maui Film Festival First Light screenings will run through Jan. 2.

Many of these films will be showing here in advance of Hawaii or even nationwide openings. The screenings also include a showing for every worthy Academy Awards contender. Tropix Orgasmix Transcending into ecstasy through the dance Sexy go-go dancers are positioned on elegantly festooned pedestals flanking the stage. They’re encouraging people to shake what they’ve got. The bass is thumping. Beautiful women and men are gyrating and twirling their arms all over the dance floor, which is decorated with large, elaborate Bali-style fluorescent prints of Hindu gods in a myriad of vivid colors.

Welcome to Tropix Orgasmix at Casanova. And in the center of it all is a gorgeous woman who likes to wear tight, shiny sapphire outfits with flowing boas. She’s Yolanda Pelayo, the flamboyant Spanish party girl who created Tropix Orgasmix.

A warm, flirty Latina who makes men feel special and women feel attractive, Yolanda—she prefers being known only by her first name—is the best at working the room and making everyone feel they are in someplace really cool that they don’t get to experience anywhere else. Floating around the club, chatting with everyone, making new friends, taking photos and dancing like crazy, her mischievous energy stimulates everyone to have fun.

“I came to Maui two years ago and decided to start throwing parties,” she told me. “I had lived a few years in Sedona, Arizona and needed a change of landscape, so I chose the tropics. I did Cosmix Orgasmix parties in Sedona and then changed it to Tropix Orgasmix here, and adjusted it to Maui’s distinctive energy.

I’ve organized magic dance parties in Brazil, Mexico and London, too.”

Tropix Orgasmix began two years ago.

But it’s Yolanda’s enthusiasm that’s really carried it so far.

“I try to get people to celebrate and get lost in the moment and the dance,” she said. “I encourage people to be more playful and colorful, and I hold a space where they can share that part of themselves.”

Tropix Orgasmix parties are an experience in diversity. People from 21 to 51 and from Argentina to Israel pack the Casanova nightclub. Some tourists come, too, but most are residents. Some people dress Burning Man-style in elaborate cos-

this season’s premiere on Dec. 3, when 60 to 70 people came out. DJ Arne’s deep grooves warmed up the dancers and The Kidd, perhaps Maui’s best DJ, got the booties shaking.

Kidd’s mix is outstanding—funky and exhilarating with tight breakbeats that don’t let up.

I’ve never heard old Michael Jackson tunes remixed so well, with a house beat, cosmic effects and the soul of “Billy Jean” kept intact.

Another one, from Off the Wall, even sounded like it was in Japanese.

“There isn’t any commercial music at Tropix Orgasmix,” said Yolanda. “I sometimes call it Transcendental Funky Grooves. The music comes from a place of spirit while still being playful, funky and groovy.” MTW

Instead of trying to disprove the shade’s existence or shame her kid, she simply sold the ghost (along with her father’s cane) to the highest online bidder, who sent her son a letter, reassuring him that the ghost lived with them now, and everyone was getting along fine. Take inspiration from her example. You’re likely to discover that someone’s reality is dramatically different from yours. A dancer was selected to manifest the glacial slowness of stone in an experimental group performance in which everyone attempted to embody different natural elements. For two months he practiced moving as slowly as he could, from a curled fetal position on the ground to simply standing, until it took him 45 minutes to complete the action. It was phenomenally difficult. You may discover something similar this week: sprinting 200 miles in any direction (mentally, anyway) is easier than carefully and deliberately shifting your attitude two inches. In other words, it’s simpler to practically become a completely different person than to create a minor but permanent change in who you are. You don’t need an overhaul, though—just a tune-up. Take your time and do it right.

My vacation officially started a couple Thursdays ago around noon—over tequila shots at the airport bar in Kahului. But my mental vacation started once I landed in San Francisco—or rather, San Fran-fucking cold-cisco. Yippee! Cold weather! Just a few minutes after I got off the plane at SFO, I found myself amidst a sea of strangers at an alt-rock-country-punk show in a beautifully plush, big-band-era venue called Bimbo’s 365 Club in North Beach.

The crowd was made up mostly of mid-20s to mid-30s kids—cute boys in black-rimmed glasses and art-school girls wearing Western shirts. The nightclub was ultra-swanky, with chandeliers in the lobby and “lounge” areas, candlelit, cloth-lined tables in the “main showroom” and yes, even uniformed restroom attendants.

I caught the last song of The Sadies before Neko Case took the stage. I had never seen Case before but was a huge fan of her unique voice and the dark country-tinged ballads she sings with full-throttle intensity. Since 1997, she’s been nominated several times for awards from British Columbia Country Music Association and Georgia Straight. Plus, she’s been written about in The New York Times, GQ, Esquire, Interview, People and Time.

But after a raucous first couple of songs, Case had trouble hitting the vocally demanding high notes of her next song. Stopping suddenly, she addressed the stylish city folk in the luxurious and dimly lit nightclub showroom circa 1931 and apologized.

“I’m full of blood right now—I’m like a blood piñata!” she said. “Okay, let me start that again. That was awful. Here’s how someone would do it if someone were ready to perform.”

Between songs—or when Case needed to run upstairs to get the tambourine—The Sadies played a sped-up, countrified version of the theme song from the Benny Hill Show. Then she would return to the stage, belt out some more high-range vocals and confide in her audience.

“Sometimes a lady needs a little booze on stage,” said Case. Then she would demurely take a swig.

That’s when I knew I wasn’t on Maui anymore.

“This next song is about how bad of an idea marriage is,” said Case. “[Loretta Lynn] wrote it a long time ago but for some reason, people are still getting married! They’re not listening.”

Just as I was gleefully appreciating the glorious music I was hearing, my prime view of the stage and the kindness of San Francisco strangers, I was pushed aside abruptly.

“Excuse me, this is MY friend,” said the guy in black-rimmed glasses, a bit hostilely. Then to his sheepish-looking friend he said, “Thanks for saving my spot!”

After the show, I wandered aimlessly yet happily down the streets of North Beach, passing numerous bars I had never been to as well as sex clubs I thought about checking out later. But then I got a call from a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile who was beckoning me to come meet him and his wife for Industrial Goth Night at the DNA Lounge in SoMa. And so I hopped in a Yellow Cab and went.

A Yellow Cab! Once there, I met my old high school chums Eerie and Grimes. I also met another cute boy in black-rimmed glasses. He told me he was a CFO (Chief Financial Officer) by day, a musician by night and promised to take me for a tour of San Francisco on his motorcycle. It only took me about two shots of whisky before I told him I was in love with him.

I was so Country Mouse in the City.

Around 4 a.m., Grimes and I went to Grubsteak Diner and had a delicious breakfast. Then I stumbled back to the flat I was staying in the Panhandle to catch the least amount of sleep possible before rising to what would be another gray and lovely day in San Francisco—and actually, the first day of my vacation.

But when I woke, I had a horrible revelation. I always forget one major thing when I go on a trip— the camera, my toothbrush, a phone number. After looking in my bag I had been carrying around with me all over the city the night before, I realized I had forgotten to deposit the rent money. And there it was—$1,750 in cash, all sealed up and ready to go in the deposit envelope with the deposit slip and everything. How was I, now in California, supposed to deposit all this dough to my bank in Hawaii?

Turns out I not only left my heart in San Francisco, but I also left my brain on Maui. MTW
