LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR MORE VOTERS, LESS EDITORS I wanted to share some comments on the Best of Maui. What happened? This used to be my favorite issue, one that we all looked forward to with great anticipation.

I sat down last night, beer in hand, ready to read my favorite release of Maui Time.

The issue started off as usual with familiar faces (Asia from Mama’s holding an inviting Mai-Tai), I noticed the next few were Editor’s picks—were there this many editor’s picks in the last Best of Maui?

Anyway, I did not mind—I like this kind of stuff, more reading, more editor’s picks.

Wow, I said to my husband, there are more editor’s picks that any thing else. I am not saying I do not care what the editor thinks, but that is not the point of the issue. It is not an issue of one person’s opinion, but the collected thoughts of the Maui masses.

That is what is so cool about the Best of Maui—it is what Maui thinks.

The editor’s picks were well written, don’t get me wrong, but when I read about Katie at Charley’s I was thinking it was a bit heavy in the verbiage—“head thrown back in orgasmic ecstasy... postsex-like sheen of sweat.” Come on you guys, and what about the best looking male bartender? There are plenty of those on this island.

And how’s this comment about the SandBar: “And there’s never a shortage of cute chick servers who actually smile at you.” I just could not help thinking I was reading a mag targeted to an 18-25 yearold male demographic. I happen to be a 35-year-old female who has been reading Maui Time from the first issue, and I know a lot of people similar to me who read your paper. I just wanted to share one person’s opinion, and hope the next Best of Maui has a few less editor’s picks.

GUY’S OBSESSED WITH BESTIALITY You can print this letter or not. I don’t care in the least! My letter (July 8, 2004) that was full of “foul language” and “grotesque imagery” was not meant to be published. It was meant to be a wake-up call to the editor.

I’m sorry for you that bestiality is a subject that is not “all that bad” (Maui Time intern Kellie Holliday letter, July 22, 2004). Just because you didn’t read it doesn’t mean others didn’t. I should have written [that] my letter was not to be published, but as the “bad” words were edited, how “sickening” was it? I really thought the editor might have some common sense to see it was intended for him only. (It was addressed to him). I know the swear/curse words and kinky acts humans do as much as the next person—but my behavior, language and proprieties around children, Hawaiian Kupuna or anyone else easily offendable is impeccable. If Kellie feels “ashamed” for Hawaiians, let it not be for my selfless service and association with them, but for the deplorable ruination of their culture by most “mainlanders” (in their opinion to me).

I couldn’t believe this was the same baby that crawled right in front of me, a gorgeous little thing with clear skin and cute tufts of blonde hair.

“I was desperate,” Vlahos said. “I went to a chiropractor, that helped a little. I was referred to Rebecca.

At her first treatment, all this yellow ooze came out of her face. The next day she had the best-looking skin. She took a bowel movement on her own. She slept that night.

“I went to community meetings and said it was incredibly important to our community. If we didn’t allow mamas and babies to be healed, we’d have a whole generation with diseases and disorders. Rebecca creates balance.

These days a lot of mamas have to work. It’s stressful. She helps take mothers out of fight-orflight intense body positioning, into a calm peaceful state which is so important.”

Stress free living Mothers and babies were floating in the water when I pulled up to the beach. I got out of the car and exhaled. My car had been acting up and I’d already taken it to the mechanic twice that week. It had been a stressful drive but I was relieved to have made it there in one piece.

I was there to see Rebecca Goff, who’s been treating families, with a focus on women and their babies, for 30 years.

“Aquacranial therapy uses extremely light touch to decompress the spine, cranium and other areas of the bone and tissue,” she said as we sat together on the rocky shore near a mother and her baby. “It encourages your own healing by releasing stress from your central nervous system.”

By enlisting the help of her husband Ty and many volunteers, Rebecca’s non-profit Cetacea Blue has provided thousands of free treatments over the years.

Barbara, the mom sitting near us, said, “I love the support of the community.

There are two people working in the water, beaming so much love and care. I had several treatments throughout my pregnancy.

It kept my energy clear, kept my body in line. I was well balanced. It was time to totally let go.”

I got in the water to experience it for myself.

A volunteer named Liz led me into the calm ocean and had me float on my back. “Just relax,” Liz said as she began to gently move my head and neck, applying subtle pressure to my face. “The ocean is a soothing place.”

I felt at ease as Liz continued to move me through the water. The tension I had been feeling about my car came to the surface and I started to cry. It made room for other worries and concerns I’d had throughout my life to come up and let go as my body shook with tears. After releasing those emotions I felt free and empty and ready for something new. Right then a butterfly flew through the sky and Liz pointed it out. “That butterfly is there to remind us change can be beautiful,” she said.

Liz and Rebecca’s husband Ty led me out of the water and laid me on blankets at the edge of the shore. They wrapped me up and I lay cuddled there for a while, experiencing the feeling of pure freedom from past sorrow.

Nadia Vlahos is a young mom who sat with her beautiful baby Evangelina Vlahos-Webb and told me her story. “She was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism. Her symptoms were jaundice and she couldn’t take a bowel movement without suppositories. She had rashes after they gave her medicine, her

Nineteen-year-old Jeffery R. Mattos has done a lot of minor decoy stings for your Maui County Department of Liquor Control. But none like the night of Mar. 13, 2004, when he walked into Wailuku’s Club Volcano—a hostess bar operating since 2001.

The strange tale came before the Aug. 5 LC Adjudication Board hearing. According to deputy prosecuting attorney Angela Hedge, Mattos walked in at 9:16 p.m. and took a seat at a booth. A few moments later a girl asked him what he wanted, and Mattos ordered a Moosehead. Hedge said the girl then sat next to Mattos, put her hand on his thigh and asked him to buy her a drink.

Mattos declined. Hedge said that shortly thereafter a man who was apparently working the bar’s karaoke setup—and not actually a Club Volcano employee—brought Mattos his beer and change.

But the girl was still at Mattos’ side.

“How much do you have?” Hedge said the girl asked the young decoy.

Mattos showed her the $15 change from the beer.

“Next time you bring more money,” the girl allegedly responded.

Looking confused after hearing all this, Board chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama asked Hedge why the charges were limited to serving a minor and failing to card.

Hedge paused. “These are the charges they decided to go with,” she said. Later, LC director Franklyn Silva—who described the club as a “hostess bar”—explained that since the minor “doesn’t know about any other violations” besides being served alcohol, the department didn’t pursue the matter.

In any case, Club Volcano part-owner Lee Alkire told the panel that the girl who’d solicited Mattos had been terminated. “We don’t put up with that behavior,” he said.

That was too much for Board member Mary-Doreen Alborano.

“Is it common practice for waitresses to ask a guy to buy her a drink?” she asked.

“It’s not our normal practice,” Alkire said.

“We can’t have… waitresses sitting down and rubbing the thigh,” lectured Murayama. Then he asked usually outspoken Board member Ron McOmber if he had any questions.

“I was going to ask a question,” he said, “but I don’t know how to ask it without looking like a racist.”

After quick deliberation, the Board fined the club $3,000.

Local activists are still boiling over the much-loved-yet-much-more-hated guidebook Maui Revealed. Well, it’s confession time: I not only own a copy of the book, but I also read it from time to time. Mostly, I read the bright blue Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman tome because it’s extremely entertaining and well written. Not that I ever visit any of the secret places they talk about—I don’t hop fences and ignore “No Trespassing” signs just because a couple of good writers said it was okay in a book. It’s a little trick I like to call “common sense.” … Meanwhile, comedian and Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee candidate Shawn Kaui “Bu La’ia” Hill is rotting away in jail. Or will be shortly. Today’s Associated Press story says that on Aug. 2 he pleaded guilty in a Hilo courtroom to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest stemming from a March 31, 2004 incident in which Hill allegedly threw a broom, padlock, coconut and metal can—not necessarily in that order—at two employees at a flooring store (Hill also pleaded no contest to two charges of harassment). And all this doesn’t include the pending charges against Hill on Maui for allegedly assaulting his wife and threatening two animal control officers with a pickax. Now, throwing a coconut at someone—that’s funny. Going after someone with a pickax—not so funny.

Looks like Maui County Department of Liquor Control Chief Inspector Bill Pacheco won’t be inspecting any more bars and restaurants—at least, not for the next year and a half or so. That’s because he—an army reservist with the 1st Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division—got himself activated. According to LC Director Franklyn Silva, Pacheco’s going first to Fort Bliss in Texas for advanced combat infantry training, then he’s off to that lovely festering wound formerly know as Iraq. When the LC’s Adjudication Board asked Silva if Pacheco needed anything, the Director said, only half-joking, “more bullets.”

FRIDAY, AUG. 6 Activists and anyone who doesn’t like the idea of scientists fiddling with the DNA of tomatoes, soybeans and other assorted fruits and vegetables—they call them Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)—won themselves a big-time victory this week. According to today’s AP story, U.S. District Court Judge David Ezra ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has to make public where corporations are growing and testing GMOs in Hawaii. Until now, the government has allowed GMO producers to work in complete secrecy, as though their work hinged on national security. If anything, hiding their crops from the general public added to the perception that what they were doing was scary. Too bad the industry doesn’t see

it that way. A spokeswoman for the Biotechnology Industry Organization (hey, that spells BIO!), which lobbies on behalf of the GMO producers, told the AP the decision was “disappointing,” then added that telling people where GMOs are being grown will be a “real detriment for continuing to do business in that area.” We should be so lucky.

SATURDAY, AUG. 7 The old Pu’unoa Project is back in the news.

But according to today’s Maui News story, not much has changed. “It’s a bad traffic location,” The Maui News quotes county planning director Mike Foley as saying. “It’s a bad location because of continuing litigation with the families in Kauaula Valley and it’s a bad location because we’ve been criticized by the state Land Use Commission for allowing subdivisions on [agricultural] lands and this is a big one.” Like last year, developer Kent Smith wants the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii (HCDCH) to sign off on the thing, which would both exempt Smith from doing any environmental studies and give the Maui County Council just 45 days to vote on the project. Smith says it’s more affordable

than ever, but Councilman Wayne Nishiki’s office calculated that just 115 of the proposed 268 units would qualify as “affordable housing.” But at least the state is holding a hearing on Maui this time—last year, worried residents had to fly to Kauai to voice their concerns.

SUNDAY, AUG. 8 The Whaler’s Village Maui Onion Festival held its annual onion-eating contest today. It’s really very simple—two guys square off, eating as much onion as they can in 60 seconds. The contenders were Eric “Badlands” Booker of New York and locally grown Eric Siegmund of Pukalani, who’s won this thing for the last seven years straight.

Both men are pros, sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), which is the main governing body in the world of consuming stuff for sport.

While both men surely did their families proud, Badlands walked away with the day’s $100 prize and a beautiful onion lei for being able to shovel nine whole onion ounces down his gullet in a minute to Siegmund’s eight.

This shouldn’t be surprising. The IFOCE website (www.ifoce.com) shows the 36-year-old, 420-pound Badlands holds titles in a wide variety of food items, including burritos (15 in eight minutes), glazed donuts (49 in eight minutes), Matzo Balls (21 in 5:25), peas (9.5 one-pound bowls in 12 minutes) and, naturally, corned beef hash (four pounds in 1:58).

MONDAY, AUG. 9 We’ve got terror alerts, soldiers getting killed in Iraq, a presidential campaign that’s starting to get mean and some big fat guy named Badlands who scarfed down nine ounces of pure onion in just a one minute at Whaler’s Village but today CNN decided to run a big story on Koko the Wonder Gorilla going to the dentist. Still living at The Gorilla Foundation in Woodside, California—the proposed Maui compound is still very much proposed—Koko supposedly used one or more of the 1,000 American Sign Language signs she ostensibly knows to tell her trainers that her tooth hurt. So a bunch of gorilla doctors came out to Koko’s “apartment”—decked out with a TV set, toys and a DVD player—and put the 33-year-old gorilla under and gave her a complete physical. “[A]pparently Koko asked to meet her specialists,” reported CNN. “They crowded around her, and Koko, who plays favorites, asked one woman wearing red to come closer. The woman handed her a business card, which Koko promptly ate.” MTW

ARAB REPUBLICANS? In 1998, according to a report on the Agence France Presse wire, Cairo lawyer Mustafa Raslan filed a $1 billion lawsuit in Damanhur, Egypt, against President Bill Clinton, alleging that Clinton’s alleged sexual antics made it more difficult for him to raise his own children with good moral standards. “I don’t know what to tell [them],” he said. And in December 1997, Sheik Buddy Rasheed, who was the mayor of Bassilya, Jordan, told reporters he wanted to sue Clinton for naming his dog Buddy, which has caused Rasheed a loss of prestige locally, but that he was having trouble finding a lawyer to take the case.

WASN’T THIS A CHAPPELLE’S SHOW SKETCH? Ms. Courtney Mann, the head of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of White People, who worked as a tax preparer and was a single mother, was rebuffed in an attempt to join a Ku Klux Klan-sponsored march in Pittsburgh in April 1997. Threatening the Powerful Why Hawaii needs a social forum The youth I know and work with want to make sense of the world swarming around their lives. They crave the skills needed so they can shape their own futures. They want to join the struggle for global justice, but there isn’t much I can tell them.

The political world has largely abandoned them. As a professor, I often try to tell my students that it’s school and politics that has failed them, and not the other way around.

The youth—and the citizenry in general—must learn how to threaten the political power structure to ensure a global governance rooted in democratic principles. We must learn how to take steps to recapture the political process that has excluded us.

Equador hold one possible answer.

At a time when people are gathering in Boston, New York and Geneva to bring focus to poverty and human rights and force governments to take action for its citizens, the first-ever social forum for indigenous peoples will shortly take place in Quito, Ecuador.

From countering globalization to spreading messages of social justice to every corner of civil society, the social forum is a new mechanism for peoples’ participation.

“The World Social Forum has established itself as arguably the most significant expression of civil society’s call for corporate accountability, democratic governance and social and environmental justice,” said James Whelan, a researcher and lecturer at the School of Environmental Studies, Griffith University in Australia. “No other event is so well-attended, inclusive and solutions-oriented.”

The first Americas Social Forum will take place July 25 to 30. It will bring together peoples from Alaska to Patagonia whose only commonality will be the vision that an alternative world is possible.

The World Social Forum (WSF) is the people’s counterpart to the World Economic Forum established in 1971 that brought together the elite economic thinkers in Davos, Switzerland. The WSF is the largest global space for the articulation of social initiatives, the development of critical thinking and the creative construction of alternative ideas for peace.

The social forums are an attempt to revitalize the skeleton structures of democracy. People want to be involved, but the methods seem outdated and remote. We have to involve people in the decisions that affect their lives. A great example of this is the practice of drawing up participatory budgets in Brazil. There, the people determine how government funds are spent.

When the European Union began taking shape, citizens who were concerned that the future Constitution of Europe would enshrine market principles at the expense of social values and human rights formed the European Social Forum in Paris. It attracted 50,000 participants.

Under the banner of “For a Europe of rights in a war-free world,” a pluralist, fluid venue for social dialogue spanned 55 conferences, 250 seminars and hundreds more workshops covering global economy, war, genetically modified foods, cultural diversity and gender justice. The tradition will continue in London this fall.

A forum like this needs to exist here. A Hawaii Social Forum could be as simple as holding individual island social forums one weekend a year. Then organizers could compile the results and proposals, then hold a pan-Hawaii forum or even a regional meeting, bringing together citizens and activists from all around the Pacific. Then, an ambassadorial team would share the results with the next world social forum in January.

Let’s coordinate the Hawaii Social Forum to plug in the youth and people who no longer believe in politics. We can revolutionize the political process with our ideas and improve the current dilapidating democracy and rejuvenate among the citizens a sense of justice. MTW

That’s because the Hawaiian Canoe Club returned from their trip to the state finals in Oahu where they paddled before a crowd of 10,000. Amongst the 200 paddlers were three kids: Gabe Vista, Austin Souza and Seth Cyr. “I have become stronger, I enjoy being with the other kids,” said Vista. “It’s all about timing… and I think it would be great if other kids would come as well!”

Gabe Vista is 16 years old and has been a member of Kahului-based Hawaiian Canoe Club for about a year. But unlike the other paddlers, Gabe was diagnosed with autism a few years ago. Part of the disorder means he lacks social skills and a lot of communicating ability.

“When he started in the canoe club, I was definitely worried,” said Sing Vista, his mother. “I don’t swim, and whenever my kids are in the water I do get worried.

Gabe came home after the first time paddling at the club and was very excited to tell me that the canoe actually flipped over and I went ‘Oh my God!’ But with the help of the other students he was able to handle it and that made it good.

“Autistic individuals work well as long they know what the schedule is and they know what is expected of them,” she said.

“Gabe knows his schedule is to be there on time. He finds out what to do at the Hale, like help doing the housekeeping, then warm-ups, then they get in the canoe, then they paddle for about an hour and a half.”

Paul Lu’uwai is Gabe’s physical education teacher at Kekaulike High School and the canoe club coach. He’s the guy who managed to get a canoe team of special needs kids together and took them to this year’s State Final to Oahu.

Hawaiian culture,” he said. “I have always had a soft spot in my heart for those kids with special needs. It is great to see the progress they make. With Gabe, it was all about the timing at the beginning, our sport has to be based on discipline, to learn the timing and the synchronisation. I feel Gabe has made great improvement since he has been with the club. I am stoked we managed to get a team of these kids together.”

Of the other kids, Seth Cyr only joined the club a few weeks ago.

“They needed a third person and coach Lu’uwai is Seth’s PE teacher at school. He talked to him and said he could do this,” said Kevin Cyr, Seth’s father, who accompanied the boys to Honolulu. “I don’t feel Seth has been with the club long enough yet to have changed, but in the long term it would be great if he grabs hold of the teamwork idea and learns how to coordinate his skills with the other kids.”

And how does Seth feel about it?

“I feel challenged, it gives me something to do, it’s a good workout,” said Seth, who has Attention Deficit/Hyper Activity Disorder (ADHD).

“Seth is a bit harder to reach,” said Lu’uwai.

“But we include the kids in everything. They learn more camaraderie, the old Hawaiian chants and the cultural background. We don’t push Gabe, Austin or Seth, but let them take part in anything they want to do.”

The third kid is Austin Souza, and he has Down’s Syndrome. But it’s clear that he really enjoys paddling. His sister Amber, 16, is happy her brother joined the club about a month ago.

“I am so proud of him and love him so much, he is such an inspiration for everybody,” she said. “When he comes back home from practice, he shows me how to paddle where to hold the paddle, he loves it! He always tells us that he keeps making new friends, everybody knows him and he likes to be with them.” MTW

Outside the Honolulu airport terminal, a shiny new Jeep Cherokee rental car is parked curbside, flashing its hazard lights.

The driver’s side door swings open and the driver, Tony Spence, jumps out, bolting for the glass doors leading into the baggage claim area.

Spence is a slight man in his early 50s, with short graying hair and soft green eyes.

He smiles often and has an easy-going manner befitting of an island native. Originally from Jamaica, Spence has been living on Maui for more than 20 years, occasionally visiting his Caribbean homeland with his wife Ingrid. When he speaks, the melodious lilt of his Jamaican patois lightly tinges phrases like “this, that and the other thing” to “dis, dat an’ d’udduh ting.”

But now, on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 9, Spence is pacing back and forth in the terminal. He’s holding his cell phone to his ear with one hand and gesticulating wildly with the other. Watching distractedly from inside the terminal, he sees airport security approaching his unoccupied vehicle. Still taking turns listening intently and speaking earnestly into his cell phone, Spence walks quickly outside, leaps back into the rental and drives away.

“Whaddya mean, you no fe cum Oahu?” he says into the phone as he tries to follow the signs leading back to the baggage claim terminal. “Please put Bunny back on da phone, bruddah.”

The Bunny is Bunny Wailer. He’s one of Jamaica’s greatest reggae legends, who was born Neville O’Reilley Livingston in 1947.

And until a few minutes ago, he was headed to Oahu to appear at a series of events and conduct a series of media interviews with newspaper and television reporters.

It was a big deal. Bunny Wailer—the Bunny Wailer—the legend who never gives tours, was coming to Oahu. It was his first trip ever to the Hawaiian islands.

But now all that was in doubt. Right now, when Spence was at the airport with a rental car and hotel reservations. Bunny, who only a week ago decided to detour to Oahu en route to his Aug. 13 Maui concert, seems to have detoured again. And that’s why Spence, the promoter who set up all those events and interviews, really wanted to talk to Bunny.

Growing up mostly in Kingston, Bunny not only befriended Bob Marley but also became a stepbrother to him when their one-parent families merged. In the early ‘70s, Bunny, Bob and Peter Tosh entrenched themselves in the burgeoning Jamaican ska-reggae movement, eventually gaining worldwide fame as the innovators of roots reggae.

Today, Bunny is the sole surviving member of The Wailers, which along with Bob Marley is one of the most famous and recognized reggae groups ever, selling well over 250 million records worldwide.

When the group’s cohesion waned, Bunny began his own record label, Solomonic, then released something like 23 albums as a solo artist, three of them

earning Grammys. In Jamaica, Bunny also formed his own political party, largely focused on education reform and decriminalizing marijuana.

Bunny has been revered throughout his career for his pure baritone vocal style and musical compositions, his popularity marred only by his distaste for touring. He recorded several hits himself, as well as for other popular reggae artists, including the 1982 “Electric Slide” with Marcia Griffiths, which became the unofficial national anthem for any organized event involving a DJ, especially within black American communities.

In addition to his own work, Bunny recorded several tribute albums for The Wailers and Bob Marley. Yet in all that, he has attempted just two tours outside of Jamaica—the current Hawaii tour notwithstanding—backed by members of the original Skatalites, Sly & Robbie, and the Roots Radics.

His reputation for being reggae’s most reclusive artist may have served him well thus far, as his infrequent shows seem only to raise anticipation for experiencing a bit of reggae legend, evident in one very well-received show in 1986 at Madison Square Garden, which was later released on video.

But mainly, and according to Roger Steffens in All-Music Guide, Bunny continues to be interested in spreading the original gospel of reggae, continuing the work of his late partners Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, and “bringing to oppressed people everywhere the twin messages of hope and the faith to carry on.”

Faith to carry on.

Back in the rental car, Spence’s conversation with Bunny Wailer’s manager finally ended. Then Spence put down the cell phone and sighed. We drove in silence for a moment as he methodically lit a cigarette and shook his head.

“I’m gwan to need a cold beer right ‘bout now,” he said.

Bunny wasn’t coming to Oahu. In fact, he was already on Maui, resting from his flight.

Spence would rest later. First he had work to do.

The apologies began at the front desk of the Ala Moana Hotel in Waikiki.

Rooms needed to be cancelled, managers needed to be consulted, explanations were to be brief but sincere. Bunny wasn’t here. It was as simple as that.

When big concerts are scheduled, especially for such a big name as Bunny Wailer, big promotional events are planned along with big advertising. There are the interviews with various media, pre-concert parties and CD signings, publicity appearances and baby-kissings. Spence had the unfortunate task of spending the next two days traveling Oahu and canceling these events. There was nothing else to be done. There was nothing else that could be done.

Even reggae legends get exhausted.

“Yes, we’re still on for Saturday,” Spence told the supervisor, receptionist and hotel sales manager, referring to a still-scheduled Aug. 14 Bunny concert at the Waikiki Shell. “But I only need two rooms tonight instead of four.”

After the initial formalities and paperwork, the simultaneously vague sense of inconvenience and the professionally sympathetic smiles, Spence thanked everyone at the front desk and walked away with his garment bag, a notebook jammed with phone numbers and itineraries and his room key.

Spence began the onslaught of apologetic phone calls to the media at his office on the third floor, next to the pool bar.

“Yes, Bunny jus’ got dun playin’ a big show an’ traveling ‘n all,” Spence would say amicably. “Can we reschedule?”

Several more such phone calls later, Spence headed over to Compadres Bar & Grill at Oahu’s Ward Centre, where Bunny had been slated to do a pre-concert appearance the following evening. Spence walked past walls covered with show fliers, arriving at a hostess stand announcing the legendary Bunny’s arrival.

He asked to speak with the manager.

The legendary Bunny Wailer will be featured in the “Reggae in Paradise” concert presented by Premiere Events on Friday, Aug. 13 at War Memorial Baseball Stadium, 4 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 14 at Waikiki Shell on Oahu. Other performers include Luciano, Dean Fraser, Mikey General, with Nuffsedd and Ekolu on Maui. even branching out to dinner. Second, I’m completely hooked on everything that comes out of this kitchen.

But it’s the look of this place that I really dig. In my book, style points are of great importance. Everything about this café is fit for kings and queens, which is probably why so many of the Haiku famous can be seen hanging around—models and maverick millionaires alike.

If you don’t know how to find the Pauwela Café on lower West Kuiaha Road at the Cannery, then part of me feels you probably shouldn’t go there. The fewer Enterprise Sebrings and Mustangs driving around these parts with that “must get to Hana” mentality the better. But more to the point, the less folks in line between my fresh seared ahi sandwich and me the better.

This establishment is for folks who want nothing to do with Paia’s morning madness and tourist-taxed eateries. If you are one of the few, chill tourists who honestly deserve to get gorgeous salads and sandwiches at a reasonable price, then by all means venture this way and let the crew take care of your caravan’s nourishment on the pilgrimage eastward.

As for any local folks who haven’t checked out the place yet, they might want to head there around the first weekend of the month, so they can catch the crafty flea market outside. In fact, the fresh squeezed, locally picked limeade is the perfect beverage for strolling about in the sun. While it pushes the border of being dangerously sour, it is the perfect balance to a very sweet café. MTW

Tiffany Smith Owner, Tiffany’s Sassy Salsa I grew up on Mexican food. My mother is Mexican-Indian and an amazing cook. All the neighborhood boys used to line up outside our kitchen, waiting to buy her burritos.

In 1970, my family opened La Familia in Wailuku, and then later, Polli’s in Makawao.

One Christmas five years ago, I made a batch of salsa for my friends and family. I delivered about 25 jars to them as gifts, and they couldn’t get enough of it. “Where can we get more of your salsa?” they all wanted to know. From then on, it was in the back of my mind to sell my salsa, but I still wasn’t sure.

The day I bought a horse and found out the owners called her Salsa, I got my sign. I talked to two of my friends about what to call it, and they both said: “Let me guess.

Tiffany’s Sassy Salsa.”

I started with the Sassy Salsa, which is hand-done as opposed to food processed.

From there, I made two other flavors—Suave Salsa, which has a mild garlic flavor, and Slamming Salsa, made from cilantro, jalapenos and tomatillos. The Slamming Salsa is awesome on eggs, or if you stir it into an avocado.

I love to cook, and this salsa is made from scratch. All the produce comes direct from Maui farmers, and I buy the freshest ingredients I can find. I hand chop the tomatoes myself at my Haiku shop and drive cases all over the island—from Hana to Makena. More than 20 grocery stores sell the salsa, and I distribute it to some of the hotels as well.

The hours are long, especially when I’m jammin’ salsa. If I start at sun-up, I can make 30 gallons in a day. That’s a lot of salsa. But being my own boss is the best, and it’s even more rewarding when my daughter’s friends call me “the Salsa Lady.” MTW

I say this not out of any disrespect for the band, it’s just that I grew up on their hits—from “Cherry Oh Baby” and “Rat in the Kitchen” to their later revival of The Doors’ “Light My Fire.” I mean, I used to cry over my little mod boyfriends on Vespas to “Don’t Break My Heart” in ‘85! “Red Red Wine” was a staple at every one of my friends’ illicit parties-while-their-parents-wereaway in ‘83! And “Sing Our Own Song?” Hell, that song was about the liberation of learning to drive stick using a can of peas and a can of corn as the clutch and brake, respectively. Am I losing you, here? Everyone sits around on the ground while science writer and astronomer Harriet Witt points out various space objects and constellations while talking about old Hawaiian sky lore. All you have to do is dress warm, listen and stare up at the sky at those magnificent crystal spheres that separate the Earth from the sun and all the planets… What do you mean that theory’s dead? Anyway, Blink-182 have gained popularity in their genre for a laudible sense of self-deprecating humor and lighthearted frivolity, which makes for damn good videos, too. It seems now, though, that the boys in the band are growing up a bit, as they explain that their latest album represents an “entirely revamped and mature Blink-182.” Uh-oh. This feature-length animated movie based on the television series and Manga comic book of the same name is like watching a Japanese video game being played on a movie screen. With careful marketing ploys strung throughout the film, it also operates as one long commercial to inspire the purchase of collectible cards that coincide with the monsters and magical forces that the characters/players use in their “Shadow Games.”

Yugi is a punky “King of Games” gamer boy who holds the three strongest (“God”) cards in the “Shadow” game when his archrival Seto Kaiba attacks him in a fierce grudge battle that awakens the wrath of the evil Anubis. The movie quickly gets repetitive as the players call monsters, spells, and traps into play, while excitedly one-upping their opponent. Kazuki Takasashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie is a well-crafted animated video game with style, humor and a built-in mechanism to sell merchandise to kids.

But his former employer isn’t too keen on the retirement plans. Yeah, that was pretty much the first movie, Bourne Identity, but who cares. Also stars Brian Cox and Julia Stiles.

CAT WOMAN - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Halle Berry stars in the telling of the popular DC Comics anti-heroine of a lady in a tight, black, leather bodysuit. The story of Catwoman starts with a rather timid woman who, by twist of fate, is granted the amazing powers of the feline— self-cleaning and mouse-catching notwithstanding. She also encounters villains and villainesses (here, deliciously portrayed by Sharon Stone), as well as a complicated love interest (hellooo, Benjamin Bratt!). But hey, let’s face it, this movie is all about the cat suit.

KING ARTHUR - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Mix one part Braveheart with one part Pearl Harbor, stir in a few handfuls of foolishness and sprinkle with stereotypical characters and you get this giant Jerry Bruckheimer “history” picture. It’s got a boatload of knights running around with plenty of swords and bows and arrows to keep the kiddies happy, but none of the pesky blood and gore that used to sluice down so many a medieval gutter. With Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.

LITTLE BLACK BOOK - (PG13) - Comdey/Romance - Brittany Murphy stars as an associate producer for a daytime talk show who gets frustrated when her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) won’t talk about his past relationships. Geez, usually you can’t get them to shut up about them! Anyway, using the show’s resources, she seeks out and interviews his exes and typically, finds out more than she wanted to MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - R - Political Thriller Denzel Washington plays an American Gulf War vet whose strange dreams a decade after the war ended lead him to believe he and his squad were kidnapped and brainwashed as part of some conspiracy to take over the U.S. government. Hey, wait, that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, it was this other movie called… The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra and that woman from Murder, She Wrote. I loved that film. You people suck.

How dare someone remake one of my favorite cartoons ever, with Liono and Snarf battling that evil mummy Mum-Ra… oh, wait, that was Thundercats. Oh yeah, Thunderbirds—that really, really long miniseries on that priest who gets it on that starred that guy who just came out of the closet. What was his name… Richard Crenna? Richard Harris? Richard Chamberlain! Yeah, why would someone want to… That was The Thornbirds? Oh. So what was the Thunderbirds?

Some British 1960s puppet show where these guys flew around in bitchen spaceships and rescued people? Cool!

THE VILLAGE - PG - Drama/Romance/Science Fiction/Fantasy/Thriller - Geez, throw in “Comedy” and it’s a film for everybody! And I thought it was just the latest creepy flick by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs)! But I guess that’s where the “Romance” comes in. So this movie is about a village (hence the title) with a close-knit community (hence the “Drama”) who go through their normal routine, knowing that evil creatures reside in the surrounding forest (ahem, “Science FictionThriller”). There is one town rebel, though, who ventures into the woods and pisses every one off (oh, that’s gotta be Joaquin Phoenix!). Also stars William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Adrien Brody.

WHITE CHICKS - (PG) - Comedy/Crime - To be honest, the only thing that might save this disaster waiting to happen is that the stars are Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Anyone else, and people would stay away in droves. Taiko drumming has been in the Fukumoto family for generations. Though the Maui Taiko group was formed officially in 1996, it has been operating informally on Maui for over 100 years. This is a busy time for Fukumoto and the taiko drummers.

“We play about 16 different temples during the Obon festival season,” she said. The centerpiece to their performance is the song “Fukushima Ondo.”

“Some temples want us to play it twice, three times, once, it all depends. It’s what was played in the plantation Obon festivals, but was brought over from Japan, from the Fukushima prefecture,” she said.

Summer’s nearly over. How many of the things you thought you’d finish this season have you actually accomplished? You’ve been so lazy. I’m usually a huge advocate of blissful indolence but your slow Sunday drive is along a major highway. In about three weeks, millions of cars and 18-wheelers will surge onto the interstate you’re lackadaisically drifting down right now. To avoid a nasty 23-car pile-up and horrifically tedious traffic snarls for weeks afterwards, I suggest you step on the gas at least a little, and either get into gear or find an exit ramp, fast.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’re a houseplant that hasn’t been watered in weeks. That explains that melted-around-the-edges feeling you have, like a candle left in sunlight. The What, the Where and The Who The Who played last Wednesday at the MACC. And so, being the dive bar Betties that we are, Michelle, Jen and I hit Idini’s in Wailuku for a quick pre-show cocktail. When we got to the MACC’s A&B Amphitheater, Meesh and I were starving so all three of us headed to the food booth area. Along the way, I kept a mental tally of how many waves and kisses were thrown at my popular girlfriends. I felt like we were in a parade.

We never actually stopped walking in our hungry pursuit of grinds, yet somehow Jen managed to acquire a slew of scripts from a passing friend while M-kitty got hold of a pair of binoculars from a passing stranger. And me? Nothing more than a large smear of blue glitter in my cleavage.

When The Who inevitably took the stage, they belted out hit after hit. But when “Teenage Wasteland” started, people went crazy with glee. One woman in her 40s started dancing wildly next to me.

“I feel like I’m young again! Where have I been?” she said to no one in particular. “They need to turn it up!”

It was a fantastic concert with fabulously appreciative people. I ran into many friends and friendly strangers, all of whom were beaming. And for once, none irritated me in the least. I also ran into the lovely and charming Carbojal Family, who schooled me on the fabulously appreciative art and frequency of yelling “Yeah!” and “Woo!” in proper doses at fantastic concerts.

At the end of the show, you could tell the band was happy, also.

“There’s some fucking beautiful women here!” said one of The Who crew.

“He said it!” said Pete Townsend, smiling naughtily. “There’s some beautiful men here, too!”

Friday night, I stopped briefly at the Kahului Ale House, which was packed, before hitting the Jazz Festival at the Castle Theater—which, incredulously, was not so packed.

The music was amazing. Awesome gypsy jazz with Gypsy Pacific, the ultra-smooth sax of Eric Marienthal, Keahi Conjugacion’s sweet blues vocals—they were all so great. I experienced a little bit of the clapping phenomenon again. You know, when you have to clap so much it starts to hurt and you can’t hear the music anymore?

But I really swooned when saxophonist Gabe Baltazar—an older gentleman with a cap and a glint in his eye—began playing. So much swanky style and over-the-top talent! Who knew those geeky band kids in high school would turn out to be so heartbreakingly cool? Sigh. I want to be a jazz musician when I grow up.

Later, I went to Paradice Bluz in Lahaina for a little Latin Night action. To round out my respectable jazz and salsa evening—and you know, for contrast’s sake—I ended it with a nightcap at the Sly Mongoose.

On Sunday, I missed the onion eating contest at the Onion Festival in Ka’anapali but made up my own little eating competition later that night when a group of us went to dinner at Chez Paul in Olowalu.

We had a beautiful table of friends in the very French-ly decorated back room of the fine dining restaurant. We also had an obscenely attractive female server with an accent that would have made canned green peas sound fancy.

We poured over the somewhat intimidating gourmet French menus with items like “Thon Des Alentours A L’Escabeche Et Coulis De Poivrons,” choosing instead to refer to items as “the $30” or “um, the first one she said.”

While the very manly boys of our group talked about how they cried during Mystic River, the dainty girls discussed picking scabs in the bathtub—appropriate dinner conversation in any circle, to be sure.

Our team of French servers deftly mise en placed our first course.

The vichyssoise, escargot and lobster bisque rolled out soon after.

We oohed and awed in our largely American way.
