NEW ROAD HAZARD: FLYING GOLF BALLS Imagine a sudden "PACK!!!!" You look over and see your 5-year-old child covered in tiny shards of glass. My windshield was hit by a golf ball in Kaanapali driving my son home from kindergarten. "Hey lady," was how staff at Kaanapali Golf Courses addressed me. They told me that what people "usually" do is find the person that hit the ball. How did they expect me to stop on a busy highway, leave my glass-covered son, and traverse the golf course asking each golfer if they hit a ball into the street?

I talked to the managers and got no help, not even an apology. According to Kaanapali Golf Courses, the golfer is the only one who can be held responsible for injuries/damages. If you cannot find and get an admission from the golfer, you yourself are responsible for damages/injuries.

Why doesn't the State Highway Dept. make the golf course put up more fences or at least put the more novice golfers far away from public highway? They told me it's the responsibility of the golf course, not theirs. Now, what if the ball had hit a baby in a jogging stroller, a biker, or someone riding in a convertible and they had a hemorrhagic stroke?

The possibilities for tragedy are endless.

In these nationally scary times, you would think people would show more care and Aloha for fellow Americans. But in this case, no one who should be concerned even cares. I guess we all drive at our own risksrisks for drunks, speeders, and golf balls.

To those of you contemplating a boycott of French products, here is why you are being misled at least, arrogant in your

patriotism at most: many important companies are either American-owned with business in France and Europe, or French-owned with significant American manufacturing. Companies like Coca-Cola which distributes Evian mineral water in the U.S. and sells their cola in Europe by the thousands of liters; Michelin tires manufactured in South Carolina by hundreds of American employees; Motel 6, employing many Americans; Dannon yogurt, whose milk is produced in North America; SNECMA and General Electric; Proctor and Gamble; General Motors; Nissan; IBM; Eurodisney; etc...

You are making an already tough financial market worse by boycotting these companies, making our economy even more tenuous. We do not exist in an economic vacuum these days; globalization is real and affects us all.

American workers in many U.S. states rely on their paychecks from French-owned companies and subsidiaries. Where I am from (Ohio, Kentucky), there are several French companies employing numerous local Americans who have families to support. (I should mention I grew up in France for 10 years where my father ran an American factory there.)

Consider that the U.S. isn’t shameless enough to use a self-righteous boycott to express diplomatic dissent. I hope the Bush administration hasn’t made the biggest American mistake in decades with its invasion of Iraq. Consider boycotting the Bush presidency in the 2004 election if you really want to make a difference in the world.

CONFERENCE CHAIR VETO POWER The State Legislature has very undemocratic procedures, giving committee chairs absolute control over whether or not a bill even makes it to the floor of the House or Senate to be voted on.

Last session, procedures were passed to override a chair veto, but new rules have come out that eliminate this ability to override, in the case of conference committees.

Senator Les Ihara is protesting these new rules and needs support from our Maui senators. When rules prevent the override of a chair veto, all of us lose our representation in the legislature, and power goes only to appointed committee chairs.

THE FREEDOM TO SPEAK GOES BOTH WAYS Now, let me see if I have this right: It is every American citizen’s Constitutional right to say what’s on their mind so long as it doesn’t jeopardize the safety of others (like yelling “Fire!” in a movie theater), right? I can stand up on a pedestal or simply on a street corner and proclaim my allegiance to the Devil, Osama, or the Almighty Dollar, right?

But, let’s say the pedestal upon which I stand or the corner from which I preach happens to lie under the domain of someone else’s organization. And let’s also say that the leaders of that organization don’t particularly like what I’m saying. Doesn’t their Constitutional right to freedom of expression give them the right to disagree with me by removing me from their domain?

I would have to say yes to this, which makes it all the more peculiar to hear Timothy Robbins say recently, "There is a chill wind blowing in this nation. One casualty of the Iraq war is the 1st Amendment right to oppose it."

Oh, that’s right, Timothy Robbins is a big-time Hollywood actor, and we know all about those big-time Hollywood actors - they’ve suddenly turned into experts on Foreign Policy.

You see, the reason that Mr. Robbins has come out and said that our Constitution has suffered a debilitating blow to arguably its most important Amendment, is that he was supposed to attend a ceremony at the Baseball Hall of Fame on April 26-27 honoring the 15th Anniversary of the release of his film, “Bull Durham”.

I say "supposed to" because the Hall of Fame’s commissioner, Dale Petroskey, a former Reagan aide, pulled the plug on his invite in a dispute over the anti-war stance of Mr. Robbins and Susan Sarandon, his longtime girlfriend. Both Robbins and Sarandon are

vocal critics of the war in Iraq and because Mr. Petroskey and his Hall of Fame colleagues disagree with Mr. Robbins, his 1st Amendment rights are suffering.

If the Baseball Hall of Fame decides that members of the anti-war coalition do not represent their best interests, then they have every right to remove that coalition from their program. That does not translate into a 1st Amendment crisis. If anything, it demonstrates the 1st Amendment working to its fullest. The only crisis, and a small one at that, is that the tribute to a good movie was lost because some people forget their position in life.

Mr. Robbins and with many others in Hollywood sometimes forget that the camera is not pointed in their direction because of their brilliant foreign-policy making skills. It is pointed at them because of their ability to act.

As American citizens, they have the right to express their opinions, but when they confuse their rights as citizens with their abilities to act in front of a camera, it is our right to turn that camera off.

ONE LAST POINT Even though I am obviously behind our nation all the way, I find it strange that we are so eager to promote ethnic diversity when creating new governments in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Now, our country has the freest elections on earth, but can you imagine if someone told us we had to convene an assembly of African-American, MexicanAmerican, Japanese-American, and every other hyphenated American, in order to create a government that represented the entire population?

Essentially, that’s what we’re doing in Iraq.

By putting together Kurds, Shiites, and Sunni’s – three groups who have been at each other’s throats – literally - for the last 25 years, we’re just asking for a blowout. We endured our own civil war and if we want others to value democracy the way we do, we just may have to step back while they now experience theirs.

BUSH COMES CLEAN: IT WAS ABOUT OIL Corporate Vultures Swoop Into the Killing Fields Iraq is going to hell. Shiites are killing Sunnis, Kurds are killing Arabs and Islamists are killing secular Baathists.

Baghdad, the cradle of human civilization, has been left to looters and rapists. As in Beirut during the '70s, neighborhood zones are separated by checkpoints manned by armed tribesmen. The war has, however, managed to unite Iraqis in one respect everyone loathes the United States.

Some Iraqis hate us for deposing Saddam Hussein. No dictator remains in power without the tacit support of at some of his subjects. Now that we've committed the cardinal sin of conquest--getting rid of the old system without thinking up a new one--even those who chafed under Saddam blame us for their present misery.

Others resent our Pentagon-appointed pretender, 58-year-old banker/embezzler Ahmed Chalabi. The State Department points out that Iraq's new puppet autocrat has zero support among Iraqis, having lived abroad since 1958. But who knows? Maybe he was a really popular kid.

Thousands of Iraqis have been reduced to poverty, raped and murdered by rampaging goons as U.S. Marines stood around and watched. Wanna guess how long it will take them to "get over it"? We watched the plunder of museums in Mosul and Baghdad safe at home with our tisk-tisk dismay, but Iraqis will remain outraged by the wanton devastation we wrought through war, permitted through negligence and shrugged off through arrogance. ("We didn't allow it," Rumsfeld shrugged. "It happened.")

Imagine foreign troops sitting idly, laughing as hooligans trashed the Smithsonian, stole the gold from Fort Knox and burned down the Department of the Interior.

That was us in Iraq.

But let's forget this penny ante stuff. Let the real looting begin! George W. Bush's bestest buddies, corporate executives at companies which donate money in exchange for a few rounds of golf and a few million-dollar favors, are being handed the keys to Iraq's oil fields.

Bush's brazen Genghis Khan act seems carefully calculated to confirm our worst suspicions. First he appoints retired general Jay Garner, president of a GOP-connected defense contractor, SYColeman Corp., as viceroy of occupied Iraq. "The idea is we are in Iraq not as occupiers but as liberators, and here comes a guy who has attachments to companies that provided the wherewithal for the military assault on that country," marvels David Armstrong, a defense analyst at the National Security News Service. A smart and/or decent president would have picked a civilian for a civil administration post.

Then Bush slips a $680 million contract to the Bechtel Group, whose Republicanoriented board includes such Reagan-era GOP luminaries as CIA director William

Casey, secretary of state George Schulz and defense secretary Caspar Weinberger. The deal puts the company in position to receive a big part of the $100 billion estimated total cost of Iraqi reconstruction. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Bechtel gave Republican candidates, including Bush, about $765,000 in PAC, soft money and individual campaign contributions between 1999 and 2002.

Finally, refusing to accept bids from potential competitors, Bush grants a two-year, $490 million contract for Iraqi oil field repairs to Halliburton Co., the Houston-based company where Dick Cheney worked as CEO from 1995 to 2000. "It will look a lot worse if Halliburton gets the USAID [Agency for International Development] contract, too," Bathsheba Crocker, an Iraq specialist for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, warned in March. "Then it really starts looking bad." Guess what! Halliburton has since scored a piece of that $600 million USAID contract.

Are we looking bad yet?

Only Bush's most intimate friends were invited to bid for these contracts. Even businesses based in Great Britain, where Tony Blair risked his political career to support Bush, have been excluded from a rigged process where only U.S.-based, Republicanled, Bush-connected companies need apply.

Two senior Democratic Congressmen, Henry Waxman and John Dingell, are asking the General Accounting Office to look into these sleazy kickback deals. "These ties between the vice president and Halliburton have raised concerns about whether the company has received favorable treatment from the administration," their letter reads. Well, duh. But don't count on appropriate action--like impeachment proceedings--from the do-nothing Dems.

Bush's right-wing Gang of Four--Cheney, Rummy, Condi and Wolfy--saw Operation Iraqi Freedom as a chance to line their buddies' pockets, emasculate the Muslim world, place U.S. military bases in Russia's former sphere of influence and, according to the experts, lower the price of oil by busting OPEC. "There will be a substantial increase in Iraqi oil production [under U.S. occupation], and I wouldn't be surprised if schemes emerged to weaken, if not destroy, OPEC," says Jumberto Calderón, former energy minister of Venezuela. Former OPEC secretary general Fadhil Chalabi (no relation to Ahmed) estimates that increased exploration could potentially double Iraq's proven reserves, which would raise production from 2.4 to 10 million barrels a day. Such Saudi-scale production would "bring OPEC to its knees," says Chalabi. The cartel's member nations, ten of 11 of them predominantly Muslim, would suffer staggering increases in poverty as a result of falling oil revenues, plunging some into the political chaos that breeds Islamist fundamentalism. Meanwhile, the people of Iraq, whose selfflagellating Shias already make the evening news look like a rerun of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, would starve as foreign infidels raked in billions thanks to the oil beneath their land.

Time to dust off the duct tape.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Two American Legion posts and two other veterans' groups in Pleasanton, Calif., sponsored a class on dowsing in March to study whether domestic terrorists could be identified by pointing sticks at suspicious people to see if the sticks move. One of the veterans' leaders (who vouched that "the government" and oil and mining companies regularly use dowsing) told the local Tri-Valley Herald, "You can't wait for the FBI and police to come up with solutions when you have the bad guys living among us." Following the 9-11 attacks, some Pleasanton veterans received training in so-called "remote (psychic) viewing" and are now reportedly bringing local families up to speed on their missing-in-action relatives from past wars. NOT MY FAULT The town council in Enfield, Conn., was criticized in December for letting its insurance company pay settlements in two incidents last year to softball players who claimed they hurt themselves sliding into bases in city parks. Mark Brengi said he tore ligaments sliding into third base and settled for $45,000, and one week later, his brother Scott broke an ankle sliding into second base on the same field and settled for $90,000. Said one Enfield taxpayer (and former pro baseball player), "You're supposed to slide before you hit the base." [Hartford Courant, 12-21-02]

And another cat, Fila, taken out of a family home in Yuba City, Calif., in December by a daughter who wanted Fila to live with her in Sacramento, escaped and made the 60-mile trip back to Yuba City five days later, winding up on the parents' doorstep. It was not known if Fila took one of the three roads from Sacramento to Yuba City (state roads 99/70 or 65, or Rio Linda Boulevard) or just walked across farms. PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Michael J. Corbett and his wife, Sharon, were arrested in Beckley, W.Va., in March and charged with peddling copies of 53 different obscene videos on the Internet. The Corbetts' specialty: nude women answering nature's call. According to Justice Department and Postal Service investigators, customers bought 100 or more tapes a week (such as "Outdoor Pooping Paradise" or tapes using the Corbetts' inventive "bowl cam") at around $50 each.

There is a certain bar/restaurant/hotel, down by the harbor, built around 1901, across from the lighthouse and Brig Carthaginian, that has suddenly entered the Big Brother world of George Orwell’s “1981”. If you are a patron of this establishment, sitting at the bar, somebody upstairs is watching and listening to you, from at least two directions!

Security, my ass, it's a mini-me big brother. They can see you and hear you, and even talk to you, and you can talk back to them if they want, but you can't see them. I would think that this eavesdropping and voyeurism is bordering on invasion of privacy, as there are no signs informing you that you are being monitored. Even banks, where you expect to see cameras, have signs saying, "You are being videotaped for your own protection."

While one place in Lahaina advertises, "Love all, Serve all", another can say that they "See all, Hear all"! They could sell you video copies of your visit to a world famous bar!

Somebody might video that pass you made at the bartender - think about that for a second. Maybe they should be required to compile a weekly summary video of the juicy and entertaining stuff and sent it off to Akaku.

Next time you’re down at the Inn, give a big wink and a nod to one of the two cameras, and bellow out a hearty "Ahoy, matey!” to one of the microphones.

It’s impossible for me to watch more than fifteen minutes of any show on TV before the flipping-channels-syndrome begins. I am constantly thinking, “Oh, there must be something better on,” or “I must be missing something really good,” so I am never satisfied watching any one show.

You’d think with all that information influx, that something would stick – that I would learn a thing or two. Well, I’ve learned that it only takes one preposterous hit song to buy a “fat crib”, they don’t make sitcoms as real as “All In The Family” anymore, and according to the latest prime-time programming, the only people watching TV these days are eleven-year-olds.

Enter Jim Rose. Not far from an elevenyear-old himself, and a self-proclaimed “Idiot”, Jim has become the subversive yet highly respected underground cult icon as, for the past twelve years or so, he has been the charismatic ringleader of a travelling circus sideshow of freaks. Initially called “Marvels”, these talented tricksters and debaucherous daredevils achieved freak-fame by performing feats nobody watching would ever dream of doing, nor could take their eyes off of. These dramatic freak show antics would entail anything and everything from Matt the Tube’s drinking regurgitated “bile beer” to the Human Pincushion sticking hatpins and meat skewers into his body which are attached to lightbulbs, and then turned on. This notoriety gained momentum when the Jim Rose Circus joined forces with the alternative music scene via the Lollapalooza Tour in 1992, as well as with subsequent tours opening for Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Godsmack, and Korn. These tours exposed most of the world’s underbelly to the bizarre and amazing talents of the various players of Jim’s eclectic circus.

But why would this particular bit of extreme performance art, that has such an overtly underground following, be exposed to middle America now? Is it because what was once taboo – tattoos, piercings, body modifications, grotesque daredevil stunts ala “Jackass” – are now immersed into our contemporary suburban pop culture commercialism? Or is it because the fans of Jim Rose’s Circus Sideshow from the past decade have “grown up”, are now running the cable television networks, and want to glorify what was once part of their burgeoning counterculture? Or is Jim, like all great artists after awhile, just ready to make some money and retire, in lieu of getting a “real job”?

At the very least, a show based on a behind-the-

scenes look at one of the freakiest, live-performances that you will never forget, will leave you with scary-beautiful images to haunt you forever, and an uncertain yet all-encompassing awe at the depth of human capability...

Kind of like watching Married By America!

A full-time resident of Maui, Jim took a moment out of his hectic work schedule on the mainland to tell me how, exactly, he scored a national television show…

SC:

So how did this recent TV gig happen?

Jim:

How did an idiot like me get a national television show? That’s idiot with a capital ‘I’!

Everyone told me, ‘if you want a TV show, you’ve got to move to Los Angeles.’ Well, I thought, I do want a TV show, but I don’t want to move to L.A.! So I spent a lot of time on my porch in Kihei, making calls to anybody that would pick up the phone and listen.

SC:

What was the general response?

Jim:

Most of them, they probably stared at the phone as if I was the one who killed the Lindbergh kid! So yeah, I made tons and tons of phone calls. Everybody had suggestions for me. Everybody told me that not only am I an idiot, but that I was crazy. I’m just too damned firm to listen to people who tell me I can’t do something. That’s kinda the story of my life! So I gotta say that my idiocy started as soon as I understood the entertainment business. As soon as I understood that, I was able to, with some credibility, start pitching show ideas.

Also I had done a lot of different television producing prior to this…a lot of the documentaries – I even did a ‘Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not’ in Kihei. The one where I carved into an apple with a chainsaw, and the apple was in my wife’s mouth. So I’ve been doing a lot of TV, meeting a lot of people, getting their phone numbers down, and then I came up with an idea. Reality shows are getting freakier and stupider every time I turn on the TV. Let’s go where we can’t go any further. Where would that be? A freak show! So why can’t it be my freak show?

SC:

Are you riding this wave of Reality TV?

Jim: Yes, I’m hanging ten on the wave of Reality TV. SC:

Do you consider yourself a capitalist?

Jim: Ohmigod, yeah! But you know, I didn’t come from money. People sometimes accuse me of being ‘nouveau riche.’ So I always like to let them know that it’s better to be nouveau riche, then to never be riche at all!

Jim: Because a couple of the channels promised I would be the one thing that’s completely different on their network. And it was my opinion with VH-1, I would have to be competing with a bunch of lame Tommy Lee’s – and under ‘lame Tommy Lee’s’, you can fill in a hundred names. It really just didn’t um…I mean listen, if Travel Channel didn’t come up, you know I’d be on VH-1. But since I had options, I thought I would do something that’s pretty typical of Jim Rose, which is something that’s not typical. And that includes the choice of network. No, I just think the Travel Channel was the place where people would scratch their head, and go ‘What?!’ And then when they see what the Travel Channel is actually allowing to air, they go double ‘what?!’ ‘Cause like I said, it’s completely different than anything else.

SC: Although your status has been set as an underground cult icon amongst the alternative music scene, how did you come to find yourself on a nationally syndicated, conservative TV network?

SC: Why do you think the Travel Channel wanted to bring you on?

SC:

‘Reality’s getting freakier and freakier.

Move over Ozzy, there’s a more dysfunctional family about to hit the road!’ And I wanted to be funnier than ‘The Osbournes’, and less pathetic than ‘Anna Nicole’. Except for one episode, I think I hit that mark.

SC:

What new frontiers will you be exploring after the show is over?

Jim: Uh, well, I want to do a Vegas run. There’s only two dreams left - I want to do a Vegas run, and I want a good part in a movie. But I’m going to be back [in Maui] for two months, then I have to leave for a month, and then hopefully I can stay for six – I really don’t want to work this year. But I have to. But you know, I didn’t work for two years prior to last year…

SC: So that was after your shows here on Maui [Hapa’s & Maui Brews, March 2001]?

Jim: I don’t consider that period working.

That was the little shows we pieced together in ten minutes. It wasn’t my real show, as you’re probably aware. It was fun. My lizard guy was in town, and I thought what the hell, I’ve got enough pieces to make this happen.

Jim: I think they were thinking that they wanted one show that is different, that is completely different than anything else they have.

And they probably expected to lose a few of their regular viewers, and probably expected to gain a lot of people that have never been to the Travel Channel, and they decided to roll those dice. And I think I’m bringing in, quite frankly, a younger demographic. And I believe that’s what everyone wants in network television.

SC:

Oh, I would love to. I just don’t know when. You know, Maui’s my home, and I run into everybody all the time…I don’t want to be a guy that needs to answer a lot of questions about, ‘oh I heard you got a show coming up next week’ or ‘ I heard about your show last week’. I mean, I’m doing this interview, of course, but I gotta tell you – me and my show are the subjects I’m probably the least interested in. I don’t think you have a clue how many interviews I’ve had to do everyday for close to twelve years. All those morning DJ’s love me. And they know I can come up with some quick jokes for them. Every morning-DJ across the country blocks out ten minutes once a month for me, and you start adding all those up, you realize our time difference – hell, I find myself up at three o’clock in the morning to do some east coast something.

The show seems to be more focused on the relationships between you and your Twisted Tour troupe. Is that because the network executives weren’t trying to push the shock and gore – that may have been too much for the channel perhaps?

Jim:

No, no! Let me say this in the Travel Channel’s behalf – I have not really been censored. The most shocking thing about the show is how much the Travel Channel has allowed to actually make air.

SC: Why did you decide to go with the Travel Channel?

SC:

Is it surreal to you? Does your own celebrity ever surprise you?

Jim: It’s real simple. How did an alterna-hero or whatever you wanna call me – a cult demigod…uh, a blip on the pop culture scene…How did that alterna-guy end up on maybe the most mainstream network in the history of the television medium? The answer to that is simple. Alterna-guy, a.k.a. Jim Rose, was never as ‘alterna’ as his persona. I like to golf, I’ve been married for fifteen years, I like my garden, I like all the different birds I can coax up to my porch with bread – they’ll literally sit in my hand – long walks on the beach, with my wife. That is my life. I’m 46-years-old and after you’ve lost ‘X’-amount of hair, you have to make a decision. Do I go for the ‘Hair Care for Men’, and try to milk this alternathing a little longer? Or do I just cop to the fact that I’m a Catholic that goes to Mass every Sunday and likes to golf? And I decided to go with the golf angle. Because that’s really who I am. And it’s supposed to be a reality show. And I have never put a lot of stock in perceptions of persona, because there are only perceptions, and personas are manipulated. And, as a capitalist, I nuanced and manipulated my persona to fit the times. You know, I was really rough and hard-edged, and then all of a sudden the World Trade Centers go down, and now I’m an idiot. And I’m gloating about it because I know that ‘Idiot’ is a lot safer place to go.

Jim:

I have a different perspective of what might be my celebrity. You know, unless you’re Mick Jagger, you’re not a celebrity.

SC: So it’s all relative. Well, a lot of people know your name…

Jim: Yeah… as long as they don’t know my face. Thank God I change it often. I’m more than two-faced!

SC: Do you ever get stalkers or into uncomfortable situations with fans?

Jim: I do on the mainland, a lot. Never in Hawaii – it’s too Aloha. Most people don’t know who I am in Hawaii, and the ones that do, are so laid-back it’s cool, it makes no difference. But you know, different people read different things into whatever era of show they last saw me. I was playing [a bar game] a few years ago over in a dark corner of a bar - nobody even knew I was there. Next thing I know, there were arms around me, I think it’s my wife, so I keep playing. Next thing I know, there’s kisses on my neck, I think it’s my wife, I keep playing. Next thing I know, I get this ferocious pain and somebody has bitten my neck, and I realize, well, my wife wouldn’t do that! And in the middle of this game, I turned around to realize it was just some stalking fan…and she bit me!

Hawaii, for me, that’s where I’m at peace.

There’s really a lot of professional and social danger. You know how Houdini died? It’s not

how people think. He really died because a fan after a show said ‘I saw you do the strongman act’ and punched him in the stomach before he could tighten it up, and it created internal bleeding. So obviously, because I have a similar risktaking reputation, and I’m around hundreds of thousands of humans a year, the odds are pretty good, I’m gonna find myself in a weird situation.

For example, the Foo Fighters came to Maui.

Dave Groehl is a good friend of mine, so I’m hanging out with Dave the next day, and we run into these guys and I took them all to the - uh, you know, they call it the Fishbowl now, we used to call it the Aquarium, that snorkel place, I’ve been there a billion times, and I had some other things to take care of, and I said, ‘I’m gonna take off, you guys know how to get back’.

One guy had just rented a Harley-Davidson, and he said, ‘Aw, I’ll give you a ride home.’ And he goes down the middle of the Piilani Hwy. on a rented Harley, 80 miles an hour, with me on the back, because he wants to see if he can scare Jim Rose. He’s going 80 miles an hour, right down the middle, so there’s cars whizzing by, and we’re passing cars on the other side, and I’ve never been so scared in my life. Every time I turn my life over to people in any kind of a social situation, that I don’t know, that come from the fan base…So even in Maui, if I get caught up in the Hollywood scene and hang out with friends, I still get put in that situation.

I used to be a motorcycle daredevil…

SC:

And then you had an accident?

Jim: Yeah, I tried to jump the cows and landed on some fresh cud and got wobbly. And that’s why now I have the posture of a jumbo shrimp.

SC:

Did the war have an effect on your tour or show content?

Jim: Something happened to me after the World Trade Centers went down. I really didn’t like the idea of a maniacal, hard presentation of what are really just silly and stupid circus stunts. My show changed, I started adding women sumo-wrestling, Mexican transvestite wrestling and still have my other stuff, but I presented it with humor, rather than with shock verbiage. (munching) SC:

Jim:

Oh, no – I’m honored. I’m just doing so many things at once!

Scholastic Surf Championships The 9th annual Maui Scholastic Surf Championship was small on wave size, but huge on fun as 140 students from eight Maui County High Schools descended on beautiful downtown Hookipa last Saturday.

Contest officials were forced to use the Middles and Pavilions peaks simultaneously in order to get the high school competitors finished in time in order to attend their various junior proms and senior banquets.

Thanks to a great group of volunteer judges organized by Greg Unabia, some yeoman tally work by Lisa Payne, and some smooth announcing by silkytongued Scott Trudon, all 45 heats ran with military precision, and the contest was done by 2pm. It left plenty of time for the wahines to get their hair done and the guys to primp their $150 rental tuxes. And these guys complain about a $25 leash?

Once again the Upcountry surf team comprised of King Kekaulike students won the team title. Their boys were hot, but their girls dominated. The Paku Boardriders (Baldwin) finished second with a strong showing in the bodyboard and longboard divisions. The Westside Boardriders (Lahainaluna) were third and scored well in the shortboard and bodyboard events.

With such a great and enthusiastic turnout maybe the Department of Education will finally figure it out and make Hawaii's first sport an official DOE sport so the surfing athletes can finally get some school recognition.

Café Des Amis A good friend of mine has said to me many times, voice drawn out in a gravelly drawl, “crêpes ain’t no real food”.

While many people are boycotting everything French, I’m afraid I can’t join them because I’m addicted to the crêpes at a cute little place on Baldwin Ave. in Paia.

It’s the Café Des Amis, a small eatery with big charm and amazingly fresh, flavorful crepes.

They open their doors at 8:30 in the morning, releasing aromatic tendrils of freshly brewed Lavazza Italian coffee across the sidewalk to lure in passersby.

Once inside you’ll find a warm, inviting room with about a half dozen tables, amusingly accented by an array of unusual artwork hanging about the place. If you’re in that early you’ll probably want to order a breakfast crêpe, with scrambled eggs, cheese, and tomato, ham being an added option for those who simply can’t begin a day without devouring flesh. The price is $7.50, same as the spinach, feta, tomato and egg crêpe that wraps up their breakfast options.

All three of these crêpes make for a good, satisfying breakfast, but I usually stick to a bit of tradition I’ve got going that’s something like

a game of Russian Roulette. I start with a chicken, avocado, mozzarella, tomato, and Caesar dressing crêpe (a work of art in itself), and I have them slice up a habañero from their jar on the counter to lace the filling. A small salad of mixed field greens with balsamic vinaigrette and a dollop of sour cream come on the side, as they do with all of the crêpes, providing cooling relief for my coming ordeal.

Each bite I take starts out with a slightly crisp texture, filling in with tender, succulent chicken breast, creamy avocado, and the subtle tang of lightly applied Caesar dressing. After one or two bites, I’m just settling in to the flavors when they’re suddenly overrun by an explosion of deep, intense heat. The first tiny habañero sliver I get always brings an idiotic smile to my face as I relax and anticipate the endorphin rush to come. It’s an addiction, I know, but I haven’t seen any chile-lovers support groups around lately so I guess I’m just going to have to live with it.

Don’t want to play violent games with your GI tract so early in the morning? Then I suggest the Brie and avocado crêpe with apple and black pepper. This unusual combination works incredibly well, the rich tag-team of Brie and avocado playing counterpoint to the crisp, tart crunch of green apple. Other options include the classic flavors of mozzarella, tomato, basil, and Parmesan, Italian lentil and tomato stew with pesto and mozzarella, and Mediterranean vegetables with feta and pesto.

Café Des Amis also offers a variety of curries folded into a large wheat wrap and served with mango chutney and yogurtcucumber salad. There’s a mixed salad for $3.90 and a large Greek salad for $7.90, but if I want anything extra on the side I get the Mediterranean appetizer platter for $8.95.

It’s recommended for two or more and comes with homemade hummus, kalamata olives, yogurt mint dip, marinated feta, garlic mushroom salad, roasted vegetables, tomato pesto salad, and fresh, chewy pita bread that’s hot off the grill.

Bring your own bottle of wine or a six pack of your favorite beer and join them for dinner between 5:00 and 8:30pm. They offer authentic Indian curries with beef and mushroom, mahi mahi, shrimp, chicken, or vegetable, all prepared with their own combination of spices and ingredients and served with rice, mango chutney and fresh tomato chutney.

Uh-oh! I’m out of room and I haven’t even mentioned the sweet crêpes. They’re all dirt cheap and delicious. Try one with nutella, Maui cane sugar and lime, banana and chocolate, pineapple with mango sauce, strawberries and cream (my favorite), and honey and toasted almond.

Miner Family Vineyards 2001 Rosato, Napa Valley $11.99 The Miner Family Vineyards is located in the Napa Valley. Founded in 1998 by Dave Miner, their focus is to produce limited highend reserve-style wines. The fruit they use comes from the Oakville Ranch, Norma and Ed Vineyards (Mom and Dad’s names) and other carefully selected California vineyards.

Their custom winery is state of the art, where they make the Miner label wines as well as producing many client wines, where they do custom crush-and-barrel aging in the 20,000 ft. caves they have made.

Miner produces many different varietals (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc) using the old-world technique with the modern equipment. The wine of the week is their Rosato. This rosé is made of 100% Sangiovese grape, soaked in the skins for a short period to give it a nice touch of pink color. The Rosato rosé has perfume aromatics, with a cotton candy flavor on the palate.

The finish is long, soft and dry. This is a big, beautiful, rich rosé - get it while you can!

The JJ Malone Bluez Band In my 30 plus years of living here, I’ve gotten involved in quite a few music projects-most of which ended up in disaster! Starting off with the Lahaina Dogs (‘68-’69), on to an extended 20-year party in the Space Patrol (aptly named), a few-year blur called the Lahaina Five, and an assortment of many other idiotic maneuvers that barely made it out of the practice room into clubs that have come and gone here on Maui.

Putting a band together is not easy!

Monumental egos, inconsistent behavior and of course, “alcolholdrugswomen” syndrome is usually the formula for the eventual downfall of most bands. But, as in most things, there is occasionally an exception to the rule, and that’s what this article is all about. Until I ran into JJ, I’ve had so much of “enough”, that performing was entirely out of the question. End of story. But not quite.

Stepping out of retirement with a cast of characters that are friendsfirst, musician-secondary, let me introduce the band: Jack ‘n Jill, Hall ‘n Dabo and JJ - heretofore known as the “JJ Malone Bluez Band”.

Starting with JJ Malone, it is a privilege to play music with this man.

Born 8/20/35 in Decatur, Alabama, he got his first git-fiddle at 13; something called a ‘Mexican Pilot’. By age 15 he was doing paid gigs.

JJ is a mere 67, going on 20. In 1955-59, he toured Newfoundland for the United States Air Force, earning his stripes with the armed services.

In 1972, a tune called “It’s a Shame” hits #1 on the KDIA radio soul station chart, spurring him into a concert headlining with Etta James, Harvey Mandel and Al Green, then SLAM! Off to Europe with the San Francisco Blues Festival going to Paris (J.J. calls it headquarters...),

JJ is the only American Bluesman to perform in communist Bulgaria, which required our state department’s official permission. He hit the charts in New York with “Highway ‘99”, in 1997 and “See Me Early in the Mornin’” in 1998.

The icing on the cake is that JJ is hell on wheels on both guitar and keyboards!

JJ’s “soul mate” Jill Baxter is a real piece of work, to put it lightly. Born 10/6/50 in New Zealand, her family settled in Marin County when she was a baby. She picked up the harp [harmonica] at 13 – “Probably because I couldn’t sing,” then moved to Maui in ‘69/’70. Sez she, “Surfing and music kind of went together – I’d put my harp in my back pocket & hitchhike to the beach with my board – it meant freedom,” and then thoughtfully, she adds, “it still does. While on Maui, she went thru motherhood and the fruits of her labor (and Dave’s), conceived Gina Barca. After this, she pursued music & went back to the mainland where she met Luther Tucker and toured Europe, during which she met JJ. Then when they came back permanently in 2002, it was time to turn friendship into a band.

On 2/3/45, Jack Brandt came to earth, started playing drums at 12 and by 17, was in Las Vegas with the Jerry Wald Band, slaying the Freemont Hotel. “I had the good fortune to work with Al Haig, former keyboard player with Dizzy Gillespie doing various gigs in L.A. I got a call from Chris Montez to go on the road starting in New York and wound up in Brazil, on a two-year road trip.”

Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valenz bit the dust in a plane crash resulting in a giant void that catapulted “Chris Montez & the Businessmen” into the front row, with hits like “The More I See You”, “Call Me” and “Let’s Dance”. Jack got caught in a musical cyclone which required him

to take a 25-year hiatus, only to surface with the Maui Symphony Orchestra for a one-year stint. During this 25year break, we happened to cross paths and he winds up the grandfather of my son – thick enough yet?

Tommy Hall: What can I say? Besides enduring the Space Patrol era intact, Tom has involved himself further and has expanded his bag of tricks. Born 10/7/49 in Oakland, California, Tom started playing guitar in a surf band in 1964 called the “G-men”, only to wind up as lead guitar of Space Patrol. He has evolved to a talent that rarely can be equaled here or anywhere else on earth, combined with being a down-home genuine human.

Tom and his Melody Line Productions and recording studio has been moving about the island providing professional mixing “chops” for live sounds; currently helping the Grand Wailea, Ritz Carlton, Hyatt Kapalua or on occasion he has been known to rip his studio apart to record live performances for individual CD’s & DVD’s, thus winning Maui Time’s writein ballot for Best Recording Studio on Maui. Also nominated for Engineer of the Year at the Hoku Awards ceremony three

years in a row, and engineering Gail Swanson’s “Rock Album of the Year” award at same Hoku. Offhand, I’d say he’s earned his stripes.

And I keep a solid rhythm down. It’s a privilege.

If anyone reading this article has been doing their math, they’ve probably noticed the youngest member of the band is over 50 – some well-seasoned veterans of bar wars, etc. This in itself is miraculous if not downright inconceivable – yet it is so. Not quite 300 years of experience, give or take a few!

Therefore we have come up with a new gimmick – Quiet! Not an ear-shattering wall of noise, but a sound digestible enough to actually carry on a conversation during the music. No one in the band is competing for louder domination of the rest. Instead, each player is working harder to give each other room: The softer one handles it, the more response is likelier to happen – musically and beyond – think about it. As for the band – good people/good sounds. Hmmm.

VARIOUS ARTISTS “HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES SOUNDTRACK” So, Rob Zombie's directorial film debut is upon us and naturally, he has a companion soundtrack littered with his own brand of B-movie influenced rock. Amongst his own tracks, he also has bands like The Ramones (so as to remind you of the tribute record he produced for them: "We're a Happy Family", now available at record stores everywhere. Just remember to avoid his horrendous cover of "Blitzkrieg Bop") and... alright, I confess I'm only reviewing this to make light of the fact that there's a "duet" between Mr. Zombie and Lionel Ritchie doing "Brick House 2003". I mean, how did this happen? Did Rob call him up as a goof and it backfired on him? They must have been in the studio ALL NIGHT LONG. Having Lionel around must have made things easier in the studio, though. Easy like Sunday morning. -Geffen Records

NOFX "REGAINING UNCONCIOUSNESS" This is a "teaser" EP for their upcoming album "The War on Errorism". Four measly tracks for six bucks. Three of them will be on the new record anyway, making this pretty worthless. More than that, NOFX still seem to be stuck in the mindset that they can shuffle anything out to their fans and they'll gobble it up. They just don't seem to be trying anymore. The current political climate has given them a new sense of urgency but it doesn't lend itself well with the sub-par songwriting going on.

Hopefully the rest of the record surpasses this flaw. -Fat Wreck Chords

TERROR "LOWEST OF THE LOW" Incredibly fast, brutal hardcore. It may remind some of Hatebreed or early Pantera and while they may not be Puya or Refused, they hit you fast and hard and hold your attention through nine songs of pure energy and an unrelenting pace. Even their slowest stuff is full of adrenaline and fury. The production on this is rather slick too, without calling too much attention to itself. The guitars are crisp, clean and strong while the drums pack enough punch to match the rest of the fierce rhythm section.

Excellent band, definitely one to watch. -Bridge Nine Records

AFI "SING THE SORROW" Admittedly, I've never been much of a fan of AFI. They started stepping into terrain that never seemed natural when considering their humble beginnings. However, their success reached such a fevered pitch that their previous label couldn't handle them anymore and they were left to languish in the major label hell of Dreamworks. Must be nice to have Spielberg and Katzenberg money behind you. Honestly, the record is rather solid not only stylistically but also consistently. Each song fits the mold of the album quite well. For some of the older fans this may be a bad thing. The uptempo punk beats are slowed down and there is much more emphasis on atmospherics. With influences like VNV Nation, Joy Division and The Descendants, you get a pretty good bead on the style they have congealed for the next stage of their career. Davey Havok also seems to step out of his usual vocal stylings and truly delivers a performance, at times making you think of Morissey, Robert Smith and pre-major label Davey Havok. This CD still doesn't sway me towards being a fan, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that this record is, at the very least, worth a listen. -Dreamworks/Nitro/Adeline

THE ATARIS "SO LONG, ASTORIA" Also recently signed to a major label, Kris Roe takes you on his unending quest of nostalgia, broken hearts and mistakes. The Ataris are a pop/punk outfit that heavily draws on emo influences (such as Jawbreaker) but also early-eighties icons (such as The Replacements). Excellent pop melodies and Roe's songwriting will likely hit that pit of your stomach where all the things you'd rather forget dwell, but also all the things you wish you had stopped to enjoy - the things that you miss out on, only to regret how great they would be. To top it all off the band also includes a cover of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer", a surprisingly excellent but also rather obvious choice when one thinks of any other band that could not only pull it off but get away with it. Long Suffering Wealth No Quarter For Older Audiences ) It Runs In The Family ( The predictable air of low level discontent that permeates director Fred Schepisi's love letter to the Douglas clan of actors, is one that even its elderly target audience will resent as being patronizingly banal. With a remarkably thin script by rookie screenwriter Jesse Wigutow, "It Runs In The Family" does little to delineate exactly what it is that trickles through the bloodline of a highly successful family of New York denizens with the name "Gromberg." Every direction of the story is another obligatory attempt at depicting entitled urban ennui among a family consisting of law firm attorney Alex (Michael Douglas), his psychologist wife Rebecca (Bernadette Peters), their college-flunking/pot-head son Asher (Cameron Douglas), their discontented 11 year-old son Eli (Rory Culkin), and Alex's elderly parents Evelyn (Diana Douglas) and Mitchell (Kirk Douglas). Even as a Douglas family vanity project, the movie misses its mark because it lacks any sense of character or thematic arc.

"It Runs In The Family" opens on a bad note with too-old-for-cinema actor Kirk Douglas slurring his speech (due to a reallife stroke) as patriarch Mitchell Gromberg in a medical check-up scene that's icky for all the wrong reasons. The audience is immediately taken out of the movie because we're stuck trying to rationalize the presence of a once great actor humiliating himself in a way that would have seemed beneath him when he stunned audiences with his penetrating performance as Vincent van Gogh in "Lust For Life" (1956).

Mitchell still exercises by jogging but he doesn't run fast enough to avoid younger Manhattan joggers who would rather knock the old man down than slow down behind him. Such are the inhumanities that Mitchell suffers when he isn't enjoying the company of his wife Evelyn, who needs regular hospital visits for dialysis treatments.

Then there's Alex, who works in a soup kitchen when he isn't assuaging his affluent guilt by taking on a Harlem landlord tenant case pro bono that threatens his standing at his father's law firm because one of their clients is the same landlord. Alex vaguely fends off the lusty advances of his Latina co-worker Rosario (Carmen Lopez) because, as he points out, "guilt is stronger than lust." But when Rebecca discovers a pair of Rosario's green panties in the pocket of Alex's coat, his attempts at fidelity are dashed by the circumstantial evidence.

The youngest sons of the family (Asher and Eli) wear the mark of confused yet entitled youth on their sleeves. Asher is a slacker college student who grows pot in his dorm room when he isn't hitting on college classmate Peg (Michelle Monaghan) and playing hip hop DJ

at party gigs. Alex stays in denial of Asher's limited motivation while Rebecca worries about their youngest son Eli's blasé attitude, which includes working on his martial arts moves when he isn't hitting on a 12 year-old goth girl classmate. Most important to Rebecca is the fact that Eli gives she and Alex an itemized list of his expenses to petition for an allowance raise, rather than verbally engaging them in a discussion. If these problems ever sounded like the stuff of revealing drama on paper, then they certainly lost any ounce of impact in the translation to celluloid.

Getting the Douglas family of actors together in a movie is a proposition that doesn't seem very interesting to begin with. Kirk is really too old for the camera to appreciate anymore and Michael only works well in well-defined scripts like "Wall Street" or "Wonder Boys," where he can submerse himself in a role. The movie does point out a need for better films geared toward older audiences; sadly, "It Runs In The Family" will just make you feel two hours older no matter what age you are. RT-109 mins. Rated PG-13 for drug content, sexual material, and language.

Who’s it gonna be? Four contenders compete for the chance to duke it out in Sammy Hagar’s bar in Mexico. The tension mounts, and you actually have the power to decide the outcome. Will you accept the challenge? Or will you just let your ennui reign supreme?!

After the last Hard Rock Battle of the Bands, there was a little buzz around about this guy. So I asked a few people to tell me what he’s like. The boys said, “He’s really good - He sounds like Dave Matthews – kind of like acoustic college music that’s cool”, and the girls said, “He’s cute.” Okay.

Well, that’s enough for some of us to want to check him out, I think, and he is playing a regular-type stint at Mulligan’s on Wednesdays. So tell me what YOU think.

Although it is all of these things, it is most of all, dark and disturbing in its normalcy. Actually, when I caught a screening at the Maui Film Festival, it took me a few days to recover. Rarely do movies do that anymore. Check it out for yourself.

THAT SPECIAL SOMEBODY-OR-OTHER I have been seeing a guy for about six weeks.

Things started out strangely because we met on a night when my then-boyfriend stood me up. We got along wonderfully, and I dumped the stand me-upper. Things progressed rapidly. Right away, he wanted to be exclusive. Then, he wanted me to move to another city with him. Finally, he said he loved me and wanted to marry me. Well, he and I spent part of this past weekend at a friend's wedding, where he proceeded to tell me that he couldn't see himself getting married for a while, that he wasn't mature enough to be married, etc. I got the hint. The thing is, I haven't heard from him since the wedding. This is strange, because we had been talking or seeing each other every day. A mutual friend told me that he said we were spending too much time together, and he wasn't really ready for a girlfriend anyway. How does someone go from "I love you" on Saturday to not wanting you by Wednesday?

-Loved And Left Him: "Hi, I know you're a complete stranger, but I think we should spend the rest of our lives together." You to your friends: "I think what'shis-name's 'The One!'" This was the relationship version of anonymous sex. You probably prefer the term "love at first sight." Unfortunately, there's no such thing, since you have to know somebody to love them. This doesn't stop smug couples at dinner parties from staring into each other's eyes and announcing, "We just KNEW" - (Cue stampede to the vomitorium). They "knew" nothing. They just happened to get lucky in getting lucky: falling madly in bed with somebody they could fall madly in love with, who also happened to be ready for a relationship. You really can't blame them for calling this "love at first sight," which makes them sound adventuresome, as opposed to "two people who know nothing about each other rushing into a relationship," which makes them sound like idiots.

If only couples would brag, "After we each wandered the desert for 40 years, hacking away at our massive character flaws, we felt ready for a little company. Upon careful consideration, we thought we could probably spend a few years together without ruining each other's lives."

That approach does require a lot of work. It's much easier to go with the notion that love is "the answer." To everything. From hairy backs and high interest rates, to ear mites, visible panty lines, and a spastic colon. Supposedly, no matter what's wrong in your life, love (not back wax, credit counseling, or proctology) "is all you need." Great in concept. In practice, it's kind of like trying to close up an open-heart surgery incision with a single Bugs Bunny Band-Aid. For best results, husband-hunting should not be conducted according to the rules of pin-the-tail-onthe-donkey. It is tempting, when somebody tells you you're "all that," to take them at their word, not ask them, "All that what, exactly?" It's especially tempting if you're somebody (like you or this guy, perhaps?) who's looking for somebody else's love to "complete" them. You know what? If you're incomplete, do yourself and the rest of us a favor: Stay home and hunt for the missing pieces instead of trying to foist those you've got onto somebody else.
