LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR COLLATERAL DAMAGE Trying to figure what our new administration is doing with our island economy by way of new construction is like trying to predict the weather by sticking your head out the window of your car. When you ask anybody in the planning department what's happening with permit application submittals, you get a kaleidoscope of answers. It seems every article in the paper about housing, commercial, remodels, you name it, and Mr. Foley has some kind of question or objection against these projects. We keep hearing about all these permits being approved but when you ask contractors, they say "what approvals" we haven't had any approved since the first of the year.

Heck, the council hasn't reviewed any since the new administration took office.

So the price of housing just keeps skyrocketing and affordable housings approvals are at a snail’s pace, with months to years to be started. Just look at the Sunday’s Maui News front page in the real estate section. Houses listed in the millions clutter the pages, what's going on Mr. Foley? Do you think that slowing down construction is going to lower housing prices for our local people. We need permits to be sped up so local people can have a house too, not just the ones that already have their piece of paradise. Remember Maui Tomorrow’s vision does not include you. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

IN DEFENSE OF TRAVIS...SORT OF Re: George Chyz’s Letter (April 3) - I rise to defend MTW's printing of Travis Henderson's column.

First, to paraphrase, "read your friends; read your enemies closer." It's crucial that rational people know what knee-jerk reactionaries are thinking, and heavens, don't Henderson's knees jut to and fro? It must be a riot to watch him drink coffee. After all, this is the writer who, after being inconvenienced at airport security, thought it was time we bomb Iraq.

Second, he's emotionally heartening.

Because his columns lack logical force, Henderson is reduced to setting up straw arguments to knock down. For example, he writes that protesters want people to believe that the war is "a bunch of kids pushing buttons on their joysticks." Obviously, this is not the protest message. He also writes, "[The U.S. military} are the most advanced fighting force the world has ever seen." Well, it sure sounds like someone's got a boner over the hardware, and it isn't the protesters.

Third, Henderson reassures protest morality. That historical, world-class fighting force? It's being used "for right or wrong."

Clumsily, he stumbles over the very heart of this debate. Protesters know this particular use of force is morally wrong. Henderson doesn't care one way or the other.

Finally, his letter responses are treats.

Lacking the moral ammunition to address just one of Chyz's points, Henderson instead reminds him that if he had written his letter in Iraq, he'd have been tortured. Well, duh. If I looked like George Clooney, I'd be a movie star.

Meanwhile, away from hypothetical-land and back on planet Earth, real people are trying to deal with real issues.

It's a good thing airport security didn't give Henderson an anal probe. He’d be shrieking, "Aliens!" and demanding war with Mars.

SILENCE IS COMPLICITY IN LIES As a veteran (1966-69) and a parent with a son in service now, I am tremendously disappointed by the self-appointed censors who are trying to shut off debate about the war, and imply that questioning policy is somehow unpatriotic or un-American.

For genuine un-American acts, consider behavior that opposes or seeks to undermine the Constitution - yes, the one we all pledge allegiance to. The Constitution is our undying heritage of what defines America, what the USA stands for, and is the supreme law of the land.

Don't forget its grandfather, either, the Declaration of Independence. In the latter half of the Vietnam War, a singing group recorded the Declaration. The public outcries of "Treason" and "Commie propaganda" that greeted broadcast of this song illustrate how thoroughly Cold War anti-communist fever has ravaged American self-knowledge and common sense.

This same fever is responsible for more than a dozen CIA sponsored "regime changes" that installed bloody "anti-communist" dictators like Saddam in Central and South America, Africa, Asia - even Europe. The so-called Patriot Acts are a direct attack on the Constitution.

People in government whose allegiance is to a political party or ideology instead of the Constitution have violated their oath of office and should be thrown out.

It is both difficult and personally hazardous for soldiers to question government decisions.

I remember praying the American public would learn a little history about Vietnam and demand a time out for real discussion. For me to do less now, when a new generation is at risk, would be a cowardly betrayal. Silence is complicity in lies.

I DIDN'T THINK IT COULD GET ANY WORSE I'm not a big fan of this reality TV phase the networks seem to be going through.

Now it seems to be getting worse. Monica Lewinsky is set to host her own reality series. Do we really need to keep her around? I mean, she wasn't that exciting the first time. Plus, now it seems Donald Trump is jumping into the act.

Contestants are going to vie for the chance to work for Trump and each week he'll be the one to "fire" one of the contestants.

Who's next? Leona Helmsley?

Actually, it's going to be The Honolulu Advertiser. Yes, that's right. The Honolulu Advertiser cooked up some brain-dead scheme to try and boost circulation. More in-depth reporting? Nah, too easy. Why not just create an island style Bachelor series?

So that's what they did. They found some fourth grade teacher from Oahu who probably goes to church every Sunday and never drives over the speed limit and they're going to bombard us with nauseating tales of his efforts to squire Hawaii's most eligible women around Honolulu under the guise of trying to find the perfect mate.

One of the best things about Hawaii is that the here today/gone tomorrow trends that so often permeate the mainland rarely make it across the Pacific. And if there was ever a trend that needed to drown in the ocean while trying to make it to Hawaii, it's the reality-bachelor series.

CAN YOU SPELL LIFE SENTENCE? The inmate population in the United States recently passed the 2 million mark.

Think about that number for a minute. At any given time, there are 2 million - and counting - people incarcerated in this country. And what's the reaction? Stiffer

sentences! Weaker sentences!

How about focusing on making sure our kids actually learn to read and write before pushing them through high school. By forcing schools to maintain certain pass/fail quotas in order to receive federal aid, we're always going to have kids pushed through the system. And kids that can't read, write, or add and subtract have nowhere to go but jail.

MICKEY'S HAVING A HARD TIME BREATHING The Walt Disney Company sent out a memo to the major networks stating "The SARS epidemic could have a negative impact on the global theme park business." Wow, how cerebral, Mr. Disney. I bet that's the first and foremost thought going through the heads of all the scientists struggling right now to come up with a cure for this potential health catastrophe. After all, we wouldn't want anything to happen to Disney's bottom line.

There's been quite the transformation across the Atlantic in the last decade or so.

The Disneyland of Native Hawaiian Species It's been a century since some farsighted concerned citizens convinced the Territorial Legislature to protect Hawaii's forests in 1903 in the largest public-private partnership in Hawaii's history.

Forest reserves were set up. Destructive animals were removed and millions of trees from around the world were planted.

Act 44 helped give Maui some of its lush tropical views evident today as one drives around Upcountry or East Maui.

But 100 years later Maui's forests are still threatened. And while the State has declared 2003 to be the Year of the Hawaiian Forest with a year-long celebration of events and programs, another generation of farsighted folks is working tirelessly to preserve some ecological gems found only on Maui.

"Pu’u-o-kali is a Disneyland of Native Hawaiian and endangered plants," says Art Medeiros, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who is working with a variety of organizations to save this unusual area. Medeiros has spent the past two decades working with Native Hawaiian and endangered plants.

Mention Pu’u-o-kali and he becomes animated and passionate, with good reason.

A 236-acre dryland forest on an ‘a’a lava field on the southwestern side of Haleakala 500- to 1500-feet above Kihei, Pu’u-o-kali gets its name from the large cinder cone and was a sacred site to ancient Hawaiians (Pu’u-o-kali represents a female deity whose offspring was involved in the origin of Molokini). It's off the beaten track - so far off the track, many biologists didn't even know it existed.

Dryland forests are the most endangered type of forests in the state. That's one of the reasons Pu’u-o-kali is so unusual. It isn't just the best example of a dryland forest on Maui, it's also one of the most intact dryland forest ecosystems in the state. When the Nature Conservancy conducted a biological assessment of the area, it described the wiliwili forest at Pu’u-o-kali as “particularly rich in rare species and arguably the best remaining stand of this forest type in the world.”

Wiliwili trees, with its psychedelic bark ranging from orange to pale green with white flowers can be found here. As can a unique type of koa, prized by ancient Hawaiians for its durability when used as fishhooks.

Some of the plants here are so rare, biologists can go for years without ever

seeing one in the wild.

For instance, "Abutilon menziesii is an endangered species," says Medeiros. "Many Hawaiian botanists have not seen one in the wild. Pu’u-o-kali has 100’s of them. That's what gives Pu’u-o-kali its Disney-like appearance because there are so many rare Hawaiian plants here that can't be seen elsewhere."

Other plants haven't been so lucky. Ma'o hau hele , the Hawaiian state flower, is one of the rarest hibiscus in the world, and grows only in Hawaii. On Maui, the native yellow

Geological Survey Biological Resources Division and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife devised a plan to save Pu'u-o-kali with the help of Haleakala Ranch, Tri-Isle RC&D, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Haleakala National Park, Maui Nui Botanical Garden, Seacology Foundation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The group submitted a grant to restore and conserve the Pu'u-o-kali Wiliwili Forest Reserve and will manage the DHHL-owned land for a 10-year lease period.

"When I came in 20 years ago, people thought native plants couldn't compete with other plants. When we fenced off large areas we found that wasn't true."

Medeiros is careful to point out that they are only tending to the land, not gardening.

"We don't want to take care of it forever. We want it to develop it on its own. Native species will be competing with other native plants rather than invasive plants."

But before it gets to that point they need to finish taking care of the deer. Medeiros estimates that there are 70-80 deer in the forest reserve with the fence just about completed.

Medeiros and his colleagues hope they will be able to remove the deer inside the fence with some decidedly low-tech methods.

"It may sound corny," he says, "but we're going to go in with pots and pans and try to herd the deer through the remaining opening in the fence. Deer are more likely to run downhill than towards people making loud noises."

The deer won't be able to dine on irreplaceable botanical treasures this summer.

With some more hard work and Kona rains, Medeiros and his colleagues will be able to help Pu’u-o-kali restore itself, creating a cultural and botanical resource alive for at least another century.

Here's a sampling of upcoming events around Maui celebrating the Year of the Hawaiian Forest.

April 19 Earth Day Celebration at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, 150 Kanaloa Avenue, Kahului, from 10 a.m. -3p.m. This year's event ‘E Ala E! Arise! marks a shift from previous Earth Day celebrations, which tended to be viewed as hippie granola events. In celebrating the Year of the Hawaiian Forest, event coordinators are reaching out to the local community with a family event, that connects Hawaiian culture to the environment.

April 22 hibiscus was only found on Haleakala at Pu'uo-kali. This rarest of plants was wiped out by axis deer who trampled it.

Luckily, before the last plants died, seeds were taken and incubated at Maui Botanical Garden. Plants were grown from the seeds to be replanted at Pu'u-o-kali.

An ever-increasing deer population, spurred by the El Niño driven drought of 1998, have been trampling and eating Pu'u-o-kali into extinction. Although they normally eat non-native grasses in the winter, deer were stripping the lava of irreplaceable biological and cultural resources in the summer.

Between 1998-2001, some plants were reduced by as much as 80-90 percent.

"If it weren't for the deer, Pu’u-o-kali would be in really good shape," says Medeiros.

He realized this treasure would be lost for good if something wasn't done. A hui of foresters and biologists with the U.S.

A big part of protecting this botanical gem includes building a fence around the perimeter. This was no easy task since the lava terrain made fencing difficult.

The State Historic Preservation Division granted approval for a fence in February 2001 and Goodfellow Brothers, Inc. generously offered to bulldoze the fence line periphery and an access road to the exclosure site.

Medeiros estimated the fence will be completed within the week.

"Getting rid of the deer will be so profound," explains Medeiros. "Right now there's no difference between inside and outside the fence line. But soon that will change.

"When you put up a fence it actually helps the land march back to resemble pre-contact areas," explains Medeiros.

"Realistically, we don't know what's going to happen, but I believe that because of the specialized substrate we hope there will be

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Eve Ensler's play "The Vagina Monologues" (a series of explicit speeches on sexuality and repression) was performed at a hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, in March, by Ms. Ensler and a troupe of local actresses (bundled in their traditional clothing) to an invited audience of 150, who apparently loved it, according to a report in Toronto's Globe and Mail. "If (the play) can happen here, it can happen anywhere," said Ms. Hibaaq Osman, a Somali Muslim activist, who in a fit of enthusiasm renamed the capital city "Vaginabad." "Having these Pakistani women talking about vibrators (is) what it's all about."

FETISHES ON PARADE Police in Edinburgh, Scotland, put out an alert in March after a man claiming to be raising money through stunts for a charity tricked a young female shopkeeper into allowing him to cover her bare feet in baked beans and other vegetables from cans, before taking several photos and leaving. And in February, a motorist reported as 40ish and balding stopped on the campus of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, grabbed a passing female student's arm, licked it, and quickly drove off.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY A couple in Tianjin, China, in a February newspaper advertisement, offered an amount equal to $15,300 for a man aged 25 to 35 to step up and marry their recently deceased daughter, who was 28 and is now, according to a dream the mother had, lonely. In exchange for the dowry, the man must remain "faithful."

RECURRING THEME News of the Weird reported in September on a San Antonio lawyer called for jury duty but who told the judge that he'd serve only if the court paid him his regular rate of $100 an hour. (He of course changed his mind when the judge directly ordered him to come in.) In January, Charlotte, N.C., physician Charles Ferree similarly rejected his jury-duty notice, telling the judge his patients came first and that if any patient died (or even suffered) while he was on jury duty, the judge would be held responsible. Ferree also threatened to judge any cases he had quickly and harshly and made fun of judges' relatively lax hours (compared to those of harried physicians). Only Dr. Ferree's subsequently expressed remorse kept him out of jail for longer than the 10 days (for contempt) the judge handed down.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY (1) A 43-year-old man was murdered at 9 a.m. on Jan. 31 at a gas station on a busy street in Washington, D.C., to utter indifference by a fellow gas-pumper, who (according to the surveillance tape) stared at the body, finished pumping and drove off. (2) A 911 call on a fatal house fire in Washington on Jan. 6 was not picked up for several minutes (as many as 40, said some residents) because five operators had gone temporarily off-duty without permission. (3) A new, part-time Washington, D.C., high school coach was accused of fondling two students in January. He had been convicted on a sex charge in 1994 and his file marked "do not rehire," but this time, two principals did not bother to check his file.

Why do people who drive expensive cars think they have the right to park in handicapped parking spots? I have seen this happen in Kihei, and in Kahului (big gym parking lot) where the spots are clearly marked "Handicapped", and the cars clearly do not have the appropriate placards. I guess because you have obviously dumped money foolishly into some big fancy new car, you have lost your mind and aren't thinking clearly, and you think these handicapped spots are for fools like you (sorry, this isn't "a handicap"). How about the people who are handicapped and now don't have a place to park - should they park in the fire lane or the tow-away zone? Picture yourself or a loved one handicapped - what would you do? Oh, that's right, you can't think of anyone but yourself and you think because you have money, you are exempt from such things. I am taking note of you, your car and your tag number. I'd hate to see your shiny automobile dirtied with a little parking ticket. Next time, try not to be so selfish, and look for the spot marked "Jackass" - that's yours.

Education CYNTHIA WADA Parent of high school student 1. How many students K-12 attend public school in Maui County?

Oh gosh, I have no idea. Let’s see, two hundred per class, thirteen classes...twenty-six hundred? Oh, for all of Maui county? That’s like, maybe like two-hundred thousand, I don’t know.

2. What percentage of Maui County high school graduates go on to a four-year university?

I would say 25% probably.

3. How do Maui County students rank academically statewide?

I think they rank ‘good’ versus other students statewide.

4. How do Hawaii students rank academically nationwide?

I would say ‘bad’ in a nationwide com-

I think they are paid less than national averages because they [Department of Education] don’t think of it as a serious job. They don’t realize how serious it really is. The Department of Education doesn’t realize what a responsibility they have.

Actually, I have the numbers, if you give me a second, I can look them up. [No, I don’t want you to look them up] Oh I see, you want to know if I know. Um (sigh)… approximately twenty-one thousand.

2. What percentage of Maui County high school graduates go on to a fouryear university?

Percentage, yeah? I would guess 60%.

3. How do Maui County students rank academically statewide?

Do you mean in terms of ranking? Well, it really varies because the scores are reported… you know, based on the number of students being proficient in certain areas. It is really hard to rank them. I’m not sure.

4. How do Hawaii students rank academically nationwide?

It really depends on the instrument being used. I know generally, but the SAT tests they’re pretty average in terms of comparing them to the rest of the nation.

5. Why are teachers in Hawaii paid far below national salary averages?

I guess it depends on what numbers you’re looking at because in some studies I thought our average teacher pay compared fairly well with the national average. We’re not that low.

I think when you adjust it for cost of living that may have put us in a lower ranking. I think that might be the reason it appears to be fairly lower, because of the cost of living.

I have no idea. (Laughing) I don’t know. If it was only for this complex, I would probably be able to give you guess.

2. What percentage of Maui County

I think 70%.

3. How do Maui County students rank academically statewide?

I believe they are a little below the state.

4. How do Hawaii students rank academically nationwide?

Below. Not way below, but I would say close to where the national standards are, however I think we are below that. Right below that.

5. Why are teachers in Hawaii paid far below national salary averages?

When they [Hawaii State Legislatures] set up the system where they compare the pay nationally, I think they also put in the factor of the cost of living in the state. Right? I think we are halfway in the list, I don’t think we are in the bottom.

Because I have heard of other states where the teachers’ pay is below what our beginning pay is, so I would say without the cost of living in it, we are above average. However, with the cost of living - that is what brings us down because of the prices that we have living here in Hawaii. I’m not sure why it is lower. They call us professionals but they don’t treat us as professionals. It may be because they call schools ‘businesses’ but they only use ‘businesses’ when it is convenient, then when it is not convenient they call us ‘schools’.

We’re working with children and they call us professionals when it is convenient and they ignore that fact when it is convenient. I would say it has to do with how Hawaii’s Legislatures feel about how important the education system is.

King Ke Freshman, Paige Alms Seven schools from around Maui County will compete in the 9th Annual Maui Scholastic Surf Championships this Saturday, but only one will reign. Coach Jeff Timpone believes that the gnarly grommets riding for King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani could take the tournament.

An active surfer for over 40 years, Timpone started a board design and manufacturing business, Timpone Surfboards, 25 years ago. The company and the team it sponsors have been going strong ever since. His deep connection with the ocean and his devotion to the sport of surfing are

most traditional island sport, is not sponsored by the Department of Education, he decided to join forces with the parents and patrons that help make competitive youth surfing a reality on Maui.

Jeff is excited about working with the kids, and finds their enthusiasm inspiring. Their parents’ contributions are invaluable, but “it’s the kids that really drive the team.” Without sponsorship from the federal government or from the school, the boys and girls who love to surf have made a self-directed effort to develop their pastime into an athletic endeavor.

“There was no coach until I started a few

weeks ago. It was a bit of a stretch to get the team together, but it has been very satisfying to see the kids pull together as a team.” All of the team members have a history of competitive surfing, so Timpone has been dealing mostly with logistics so far. He is looking forward to helping the team become “more cohesive” by “getting more involved,” and developing inter-team contests, among other things.

“The current team was assembled strictly to earn Maui County bragging rights,” jokes Timpone, who has high hopes for the Scholastic Championships on the 19th. Twenty members of the King Kekaulike team will compete in Men’s and Women’s shortboard, longboard, and bodyboard. Two of the school’s best surfers, senior Luke Walsh and freshman Paige Alms, will miss the competition. Luke, who will go to the national scholastic tournament later in the season, is currently in California qualifying for a professional tournament; Paige has a photo shoot for her sponsor. Timpone isn’t the least bit worried about their absence, however.

Senior Nick King, who has taken his shortboard all the way to the National Scholastic Surfing Association tournament, is “the best surfer on the team.” Senior Kahone Speed and sophomore Kylin Shiubukaua have both had extensive competitive longboard careers.

Senior Helena Suehiro did well in last year’s nationals, and Senior Rosalie Nolan is “a really good surfer.” Senior Shell Patterson is a favorite in the bodyboard competition.

The rest of the team is made up of King Kekaulike students from every class level. All the teammates ride sticks made on Maui, some of them from Timpone’s own shop. A group of five of the team members won the Regionals in Oahu in March and Timpone expects the larger team to show their alma mater proud. The competition will be held at Pavilions at Hookipa, which he describes as a “user friendly spot” that will likely sport 2’ to 4’ waves for the tournament; “fun surf” for all three sections of the competition.

Latést Invasivé Spéciés CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS UNLEASHED ON MOLOKA’I?

Medium-sized cruise ships alone carry more than 1,200 passengers and crews of 600. When one of these sea-going cities anchors off Lahaina or berths in Kahului Harbor, it dwarfs everything around it but the sea and sky. Most of Maui County welcomes cruise ships with open arms when they drop anchor and unload their cash-carrying passengers. But some Molokai residents have made it clear that to them, cruise ships and their passengers are about as welcome as an invasive species. Some Friendly Island residents have drawn a line and said no to a thousand or more tourists invading their island at once. Among other things, they fear the cruise ships discharge more toxic stuff than just people, like sewage and chemicals into Molokai’s offshore waters. Longer term, they fear that this first step into mass tourism is likely to forever alter their island’s laid-back lifestyle.

Many on Molokai disagree, and have worked since the year 2000 to make Molokai a regular stop on cruise ships’ itineraries. At the very least, they want to welcome a shipload of cruise visitors and see how it works out. Whatever the final outcome of the disagreement, in a state that is looking to diversify its economy, the entire question will undoubtedly influence discussions well into the future. And with the Molokai line drawn in the sand, it can never be said again that Hawaii is a state that unquestioningly welcomes the mighty tourist dollar.

In Hawaii, nothing is more unwelcome than an invasive species—introduced plants or animals that have a detrimental effect on the environment. Invasive species take over, overwhelming and crowding out native species, or consuming them, or otherwise negatively impacting the ecosystem here. A bill being heard by the state Legislature calls invasive species “the single greatest threat to Hawaii’s economy and environment and to the health and lifestyle of Hawaii’s people.”

Invasive plants here are miconia, fireweed and rubber vine; animals include coqui frogs, hooded chameleons and axis deer.

The latest, as the Molokai citizens group Hui Ho’opakele ‘Aina (Rescue the Land) sees it, are hordes of Homo sapiens disembarking from cruise ships, eager to see the sights of rural Hawaii that Molokai offers.

And spend money while they do, say others on Molokai who welcome cruise ship visitors and the money they bring to the cash poor island. But members of Hui Ho’opakele ‘Aina say that they don’t want tourist dollars if that means have their environ-

ment and rural lifestyle negatively impacted. “It’s not antitourist,” one of the hui leaders, Walter Ritte, has said. “We’re anti the impacts on this community.”

Late last year the hui demanded to have a say in the state’s decision to allow cruise ships to anchor offshore and use Kaunakakai Wharf to unload passengers there. The entire population of Molokai is about 7,500; there is not one traffic signal on the island, nor a lot of public restrooms. A portion of its population depends on the sea and land for sustenance, and treasures its rural lifestyle. Molokai has an abundance of undeveloped, natural beauty and tranquility—qualities much in demand by world travelers seeking escape from urban and suburban ugliness.

Last December the hui, represented by Earthjustice attorney Isaac Moriwake, filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s decision to allow cruise ships to use the small boat harbor at Kaunakakai.

The suit was filed just before the 1,266-passenger ship Statendam, owned by Holland America, was scheduled to make the first-ever stop at Kaunakakai on Dec. 28. At least eight more stops by Holland line and Princess Cruises were scheduled through 2004.

It wasn’t just the use of the Kaunakakai Wharf that worried the hui members. They felt some of their other worries were justified when a water-quality expert from Alaska told Molokai residents about the downside of cruise ships his state had experienced. He said they found the ships dump chemicals and wastes, drag anchors across reefs, and that their economic benefits to the local economy turned out to be highly debatable.

Stirred to action with such information, about 150 Molokai protestors awaited the Statendam’s arrival off Kaunakakai on Dec. 28, but heavy weather caused it to cancel the visit. Three weeks later, with another ship due to visit and another protest planned, the ship skipped its Molokai stop after losing a day in its itinerary. The protests against tourism were unprecedented in Hawaii, which has always welcomed visiting tourists, well before Hawaii became a state in 1959.

In February, a 2nd Circuit Court judge denied the hui’s request for an environmental review before a ship was allowed to stop off Molokai. Judge Shackley Raffetto decided that the Hui Ho’opakele ‘Aina’s lawsuit could not stand on its own merit, and did not prove that irreparable damage would result from the ocean liner’s stop, or that the public interest would be

harmed. Earthjustice lawyer Isaac Moriwake, representing the Molokai hui, said despite the ruling, they would continue to pursue avenues to protect their waters and rural lifestyle. “We intend to go the distance,” he said from the Honolulu office of Earthjustice.

Finally, due to the controversy, the cruise ships announced that they were canceling all scheduled stops to Molokai this year. Attorney Moriwake called the cancellations “a step in the right direction.” He said the cruise ship invasions are not appropriate to Molokai’s rural, Hawaiian lifestyle. These things are values recognized in the Molokai Community Plan, and are recognized as assets. “It’s not ‘no development’, or ‘no tourism’,” he said. “Create economic bases, yes, but don’t leave behind these values (Molokai stands for).” He said among many other detrimental impacts, cruise ships unloading hordes of passengers creates a “zoo” atmosphere in Lahaina, an effect that would be greatly magnified on rural Molokai.

Other Molokai residents outside the hui expressed disappointment and anger over the cancellations. Some pointed out that not all on Molokai live off the sea and land, and that they need the tourist dollars cruise ships would bring. Maria Holmes, interim director of the Molokai Visitors Association, said no one involved in bringing cruise ships to Molokai intended the visits to negatively impact the island. It was to benefit the people on Molokai— like crafters, merchants, activity providers, transportation companies and others, and particularly to help those who depend on tourism through the slow months when tourism drops.

In 2000 she was involved with the first meetings to see if it would be possible to bring cruise ships to Molokai—“brainstorming sessions” that included Holland America Cruise Line sales and marketing people, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources. From the beginning, the intention was to handle cruise ship visits “Molokai style.” Instead of big tour buses, school buses and other less obtrusive transportation would be used. The visits were spread throughout the year, less than one a month.

“It wasn’t going to change anything,” Holmes said. “There was no building or changes in zoning. The visitors were going to come in for the day, and leave.”

Environmental concerns were discussed, and she and others got a tour of one of the ships, including how they disposed of waste. Holmes and others came away “very confident” the ships

wouldn’t be detrimental to Molokai’s offshore environment.

The initial idea was to do it once, “see if we could handle it,” and go from there. Looking back, she said there should have been more community involvement from the beginning. Some Molokai people were not involved in the initial process, and were caught off guard when they found out cruise ships would be visiting. They came together, formed the Hui Ho’opakele ‘Aina, and retained Earthjustice attorney Moriwake to represent them.

“They do have valid concerns about impacts of such visits,” Holmes said of the hui. But Holmes, who also runs molokaievents.com, does not think cruise ships “visiting a few times a year changes anything about Molokai. People (from the cruise ships) would be coming to see and experience our island and our lifestyle, not to change it.” She said the reason she and others choose to live on Molokai is because it is a very special place, the way Hawaii used to be. “We love it here because it is special and we don’t want to see it changed,” she said. “But we have to have ways to make a living.” The Molokai residents who work the fishponds and practice other traditional Hawaiian living—that is not for everyone on Molokai, she said, noting much of it is very physical.

That is how things stand today, but the situation is far from over.

Moriwake said there would be community meetings on Molokai on the matter this summer. He welcomes the discussions, but he wants to ensure that they are handled appropriately, and are not “a cruise line dog and pony show,” or stacked with people in the audience in favor of cruise ship tourism in matching t-shirts and hats.

Once places in Hawaii are “discovered”—with the help of tourism that is welcomed and encouraged—it takes a surprisingly short time for them to be transfigured into something completely different from what they once were. In the 1950’s, Waikiki was a sleepy seaside section of Honolulu. In the 60’s, Lahaina was a quiet Westside Maui village and harbor. In the early 70’s, Kailua-Kona on the Big Island was a tranquil fishing village.

Kaunakakai could be similarly transformed, and just as quickly. What it takes is enough visitors to start the tourist chain reaction rolling toward critical mass. Cruise liners serve as the mother ships, dispersing the seeds of tourism a thousand-plus at a time. Such numbers mean money—at least enough in the beginning to support a new ice cream shop, always a surefire tourist favorite. The ice cream shop begets a “South Seas Trading Post” selling Polynesian artifacts manufactured in Malaysia, which begets a t-shirt shop, which spawns a tropical clothing boutique and a fast food joint, whose success brings in more art galleries,

more restaurants, real estate offices, and eventually calls for more public restrooms, and more parking lots. And obviously Kaunakakai needs a traffic signal—or four or five—to handle the increased traffic from rent-a-cars, tour vans, tour buses, HarleyDavidson rentals, bike rentals, mopeds, the always-mobile loads of tourists visiting Molokai en masse, from cruise ships, as free and independent travelers, day-trippers over from Maui, and eventually on direct flights from Los Angeles and the rest of the west coast. The pattern among invasive species in Hawaii is that they always crowd out native species, take over, overwhelm and irreparably transform the existing landscape.

This scenario of what Kaunakakai could look like in 2018 is exactly what some on Molokai are fighting to avoid. How many?

The two protests brought out crowds estimated at about 150 at each. Earthjustice attorney Isaac Moriwake says 1,000 signatures were gathered “in a limited effort” at collecting them.

“Industrial-sized tourism is just not appropriate for Molokai,” he said. “Not culturally, socially, ecologically. This is not about people of Molokai being xenophobes, or being backwards or anything like that at all. These are very legitimate concerns they have.”

If not tourism, what? MVB interim director Maria Holmes said she has asked Hui Ho’opakele ‘Aina members what they would favor in place of tourism, and that they said they don’t want anything, “they’re against any change.”

A meeting on Molokai in March to brainstorm ideas on stimulating the economy there in one way served to highlight the allure of tourism. One of the ideas offered at the meeting almost made unbridled tourism look attractive to some residents: building a prison on the west end. Dozens of other ideas were offered, including bringing back the Pau Hana Inn and the Kaluakoi hotel as full-service, commercial hotels. But most of the ideas—starting sports training clinics; creating a recycling center—only seemed to only underline how no other business is quite the visitor industry, in that it brings immediate cash infusions, right here, right now, in the form of cash-carrying visitors.

The war in Iraq that began Mar. 20 did not have the immediate effect of cutting into Hawaii’s tourism, and may have helped it, at least in the first weeks of the war. News stories reported that while Japanese bookings to Hawaii dipped, some American travelers had switched their destination to Hawaii for its safety and isolation, in place of Europe or Asia, where they might be more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

For travelers looking to get away from it all, there is no place like Molokai. And virtually all the residents welcome tourists there—as long as they come in groups smaller than a thousand or more at a time.

Rockin’ Sushi at Duncan’s Sushi, like many other things, comes in varying degrees of quality. Sometimes a couple of quick, cheap rolls are just what I need to hit the spot, but on other days I get a craving that can only be satisfied by richly crafted, gourmet-style sushi that you can only get by paying top dollar. I’m in one of these moods today, but I’m going to save myself the long drive to some of my favorite spots on the other side and take a chance at Rockin’ Sushi, located in Duncan’s Coffee Shop in Makawao.

Duncan’s is a comfortably quiet coffeelover’s haven at the lower end of town on Baldwin Avenue. Take one step through their door and you’ll be surrounded by heady aromas and the hiss and scream of steaming milk: perfect for enjoying a double mocha and a chapter or two of a good book. They offer a light menu of bagels, salads, breakfast wraps and such to pad your tummy against the coming onslaught of caffeine, all prepared fresh and done well.

The sushi bar is a small, six-seater affair in the back, open from eleven in the morning until nine at night (ten on Saturdays). I arrived at about seven, too late for coffee but in plenty of time for hot, steaming green tea served in thick, earthenware cups. I don’t know if it’s the brand or the preparation, but this tea is better than any green tea that I’ve had and one cup is not going to be enough.

The sushi menu is fairly standard with a long list of single-piece sushi, sashimi, rolls, hand rolls, and specialty rolls. I start out light with an order of ahi poke and some salmon and hamachi nigiri.

Now I’m used to seeing nigiri sold in pairs for $4.50 or $5.00, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that an order of salmon (raw, glistening ambrosia) was priced at only $2.50. Imagine my heart-

break when I received only one piece, sad and lonely next to its pale hamachi twin. I savored that salmon like you wouldn’t believe, taking the time to truly enjoy it before promptly ordering another one (my math skills having finally kicked in to tell me it was the same deal). The hamachi was good, too.

The poke ran me eight dollars and was a pretty fair-sized portion, attractively presented on a glazed plate with lots of sprinkly, garnishy stuff on it. The flavor fell a bit flat for me, though, and had a little too much sesame, but it was an easy fix with a liberal splash of my wasabi-shoyu dip.

The spicy tuna roll came out next, garnished with radish sprouts peeking up out of the ends.

This roll’s a favorite of mine because the heat doesn’t come until the end, allowing your palate time to enjoy the rich sensation of raw ahi and crisp nori before the burn turns on.

You gotta love the burn.

I also had the spider roll with deep-fried, soft-shell crab, which was good but unexceptional. The dynamite roll capped my evening of sushi with originality and unexpected flavor.

It’s a California roll topped with baked scallops and a rich, spicy sauce (sambaal and mayo?), then heavily doused with tobiko and shaved bonito. It took a moment to adjust to this roll because it was served hot, but once I adapted I liked it more and more. My wife didn’t care for the smoky, fishy flavor of the bonito, but I thought it was a nice, unusual accent to the richness of the avocado and crab inside.

My only point of dissatisfaction with Rockin’ Sushi was that the prices were higher than I expected, although they’re the same as I would find on the other side. I guess I thought that a small place in an upcountry coffee shop would have to try to undersell their big name counterparts. Well, I’m not going to give up going to my favorite sushi bars, no matter how long the drive, but Rockin’ Sushi in Makawao has definitely earned a place high on my list of options.

Fleur Du Cap 2000 Chardonnay Republic Of South Africa

The featured wine of the week is Fleur Du Cap 2000 Chardonnay. This is a winery located in South Africa’s Cape Coastal region. South Africa is a country that has been producing wine for many years and is a place noted for their Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays. The climate is considered mild and the cool breezes from both the Indian and Atlantic oceans offer the grape prime slow-growing conditions.

This Chardonnay is barrel fermented and has a delicate aroma of lime-citrus and spices. On the palate, it has a crisp, tart, hint of grapefruit that leads to pear and creates a long finish with a touch of oak. This style Chardonnay suits shellfish, like chilled oysters and shrimp, with a spicy cocktail sauce, or fish, especially salmon or tuna sushi.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua initiated this event and has made a firm commitment to reconnect the "host" to the "hosted”; the hosts being the culture and people of Hawaii and the hosted being the visitors who are in search of a true

representation of the islands. The festival has created an atmosphere where the Hawaiians are able to gather and renew their knowledge, while at the same time affording the visitor an opportunity to experience Hawaiian heart and soul.

This unique event begins on Thursday, April 17 and runs through Sunday, April 20 from 10am to 4pm daily. Local residents and visitors are invited to participate through interaction with artisans, Hawaiian practitioners, workshops, films, food, music and merriment. Some of the activities offered are lauhala weaving, oil & watercolor painting, Ni'ihau shell lei making, scrimshaw classes and much more.

The Friday evening Celebration Luau and Show will include a vast array of talent, including the group "Na Palapalai" and a special appearance by Uncle Mahi Beamer and Nina Kealiiwahamana. A "tag-team" hula concept will be introduced to incite an impromptu atmosphere of fun and frolic. Henry Kapono, Kekuhi Kanahele, Ernie Cruz Jr. and Amy Gilliom are featured during the Saturday night Celebration Concert. Henry Kapono, renowned entertainer, was instrumental in forming the vision for The Celebration of the Arts. Daily activities are scheduled Friday through Sunday and include a keiki (children's) program.

Clifford Nae'ole is the Event Chair and has worked for the hotel for 10 years, assuming the cultural advisor position for the last six. Mr. Nae'ole plays a significant role in sharing the culture of Hawaii with the guests. "The Ladies and Gentlemen of the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, are eager to welcome everyone with the hospitality that Hawaii is known for."

One aspect of the weekend will be the panels and workshops designed to create dialogue, sharing and awareness. "Great Hawaiian Women Composers”; “Women of the High Kapu (ranking)”; “Women of the Voyaging Canoes” and a special hula and chant presentation of “Na Wahine Wiwo'ole (fearless women)" are examples of what is in store for the attendee.

In the tradition of Easter, a non-denominational Easter service will be held along with a children's petting zoo, an Easter egg hunt and a spectacular Easter Brunch. "This event is open and welcome to all. We are a five-diamond resort immersed in a five diamond culture," concluded Mr. Nae'ole.

Shallowness abounds in "Bulletproof Monk," a bland martial arts comedy that miserably depreciates aerial wire fight scenes made popular to western audiences with "The Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Based on the "Flypaper Press" comic book of the same title, the movie leans more toward another material that similarly attracts flies.

The monk in question (Chow Yun-Fat "The Replacement Killers") is a Tibetan monk kept perpetually young since 1943 as guardian of an ancient scroll that Nazi SS Commander Struker (Karel Roden - "Blade II"), still aspires to capture after his first attempt in '43. Now 60 years later, the monk wanders around a non-specific American city (it was filmed in Toronto and Vancouver) looking to fulfill a prophecy that he pass along responsibility for the potentially world-controlling scroll to Kar (Seann William Scott - "American Pie"), a pickpocket dude with a lot of "potential." If you're eager for a laughably bad movie with very little redeeming camp substance, then "Bulletproof Monk" should fit the bill.

"Bulletproof Monk" is a heavily clichéd teen-pleasing action movie with a lot of high-tech spectacle that adds up to naught. Chow Yun-Fat's poor mastery of English is painfully exposed alongside Seann William Scott's wobbly attempts at leading-man-to-be. For a movie based purely on played-out martial arts spectacle and comedic situations that make the '60’s television show "Get Smart" look like a work of genius, the results are abysmal.

Seann Williams Scott's character is all over the place as a boy/man with no center of conduct or behavior. One minute he's picking the pocket of an undercover cop and in the next scene he's saving a girl from being run over by a subway car. When Kar

gets in over his head with a dangerous bunch of thugs who want to sever his testicles, the modern day slacker busts out with some slick martial arts moves that promptly succumb to his lack of expertise. It seems that Kar's much talked about "potential" in the film is something that casting agents are willfully imposing on Scott in real life, regardless of his insignificant range. That's not to say that Matt Damon would have improved the film's overall quality in the same role, but then again he would have.

Music video and commercial director Paul Hunter lacks the attention span to expand the cartoon aspects of "Bulletproof Monk" to a suitable level. The plot is meant to serve as an exploitation film along the lines of "Ilsa, She Wolf Of The SS," except with martial arts fight scenes played for comedy ala Jackie Chan. If Hunter had harmonized the film's tone this way, its lackluster dialogue and junky plotting would take on the exaggerated camp quality they solicit. Such an extreme approach would have also called for considerably bustier actresses to fully achieve the "Faster, Pussycat!

Kill! Kill!" characteristic required.

As the movie lurches toward its climatic fight between Nazi pig Struker and our benevolent, enlightened monk, a love story between Kar and Jade a.k.a. Bad Girl (Jaime King - "Blow") creeps up to put a blossom of teen happiness on the picture. Jade, who started out in the story as a hanger-on with a group of tattooed thugs, has matured into an equally responsible guardian of the scroll with Kar. A job that previously required one mature Tibetan monk now demands two immature American youths.

Whether it was prophecy or desperation that led the monk to entrust the balance of world peace to two young people, who must not share their portions of the scroll with each other, is a moot point because you can't laugh with them you can only laugh at them.

HOLES - (PG) - Drama - A warden (Sigourney Weaver) at a juvenile detention facility has the children there dig great holes in the ground claiming that it builds character - when she's secretly using the tasks as a means to hunt for a buried treasure.

MALIBU’S MOST WANTED - (PG13) Comedy - Brad Gluckman (Jamie Kennedy) is a wannabe rap star from Malibu who acts and talks like he's from the "'hood." Concerned that his son is going to embarrass him during his campaign to become the governor of California, Brad's wealthy father (Ryan O'Neal), and his campaign manager (Blair Underwood), hire two Juilliardtrained actors (Taye Diggs and Anthony Anderson) to disguise themselves as "real life gangstaz", and kidnap his son, dropping him off in the "real hood" in Compton, in an effort to scare the ghettofied attitude and behavior out of him.

Now Showing AGENT CODY BANKS - (PG) - Action/Adventure - Young teen Cody Banks (Frankie Muniz) has all the problems of a typical kid - he hates homework and loves to hang out with his friends. What they don't know is that he's also a special agent trained

by the CIA, with a full arsenal of gadgets behind him.

The agency recruits Cody and sends him undercover as a student at a private school, where he must befriend a young girl in order to get close to her scientist father.

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW OF ALL BOMBS I've been married to my wife for two years, and I've been faithful. The problem is my mother-in-law. She's really sexy, and has an awesome personality. I'm so attracted to her; I wish I could have just one night with her. I know it's wrong, and it can't happen, because she's married and so am I, but she's on my mind all the time. Just because you have a Self doesn't mean you should express it. Yes, this goes against popular wisdom - wisdom especially popular with people determined to pin you to a wall at a cocktail party and wax on about something extremely personal and headbangingly dull. It's a favorite, too, with people who shout loudly into cell phones in public places, apparently convinced that the world will be a better place once word gets out that they changed laxatives or forgot to floss. If your name is Larry David, Woody Allen, or Chris Rock, they might actually be sincere. If not, they are either trying to be polite or preparing to ask you for money - either to borrow it or to bill you for it.

This brings us to the only people who will benefit from you expressing your feelings - divorce lawyers looking to step up the payment schedule on their Lamborghinis by clearing your life of excess cars, houses, and wives.

You fell into the mommy-in-law vortex by making little mental videos of her and replaying them endlessly, against your better judgment (if any), until you just about went blind with lust.

You can claw your way out, pretty much the same way you got in. Instead of endlessly indulging yourself, just endlessly unindulge yourself. Sounds like fun, huh? Whenever the lady hops on one of your synapses, and crosses her legs like Sharon Stone, this is your cue to run her out of your head.
