OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

Hawaii recently became the 11th state to adopt a Beverage Container Law (Bottle Bill). However, Governor Lingle has expressed a desire to have it repealed before it can be put into action.

This situation reflects poorly on the people of Hawaii. It says one of three things; either Hawaiians don't care about their land or we think we are smarter than those people who have adopted Bottle Bills or we are unable to implement a Bottle Bill that will work.

I recommend we give the bill a try. No other state has ever repealed a Bottle Bill. The average recovery rate for beverage containers in States that have implemented Bottle Bills is 80% while States without them recover less than the National average of 41%. That sounds like a good track record to me.

We certainly need something! Given our inability to move any plastic beverage bottles off Maui over the last year and a half, we would definitely benefit from a proven container-recycling program.

California recovers 34% of their plastic beverage bottles with the help of their Bottle Bill.

I find it sad that Hawaii continues to place the economy over the environment.

We are measuring our lives in dollars, not sense. I'm afraid that the government won't take positive action until our islands begin to look like Manhattan Island.

Unfortunately, by then it will be too late.

A BETTER AMERICA I once thought America was the best democracy in the world. As I learned more about what really goes on here and elsewhere, my opinion changed.

Now, I'm ashamed to be an American and here's the ten top reasons why: First of all, the USA is not even a true democracy. We have a democratically elected oligarchy. Switzerland has a true democracy in which citizens vote every few weeks to directly make decisions.

Second, we are one of two industrialized nations that don't have national healthcare, the other is South Africa.

Third, we have more political prisoners per capita than any country in the world.

Fourth, we have been identified as a human rights violator by the UN for our continued relocation of native Americans from reservation land, which is planned for strip mining. This is going on today, the curse of America.

Fifth, we consume more resources and produce more toxic waste per capita than any nation in the world.

Sixth, we have the gall to act as though the world owes us a favor while we vampire resources and use sweatshop labor in third world dictatorships that we sponsored with money and weapons.

Seventh, we are the only country in the world to be declared a terrorist nation by the

UN for our support of the contras in Nicaragua.

Eighth, our CIA has trained and propped up the worst dictators and their death squads.

Ninth, our military industrial complex has produced most of the weapons of mass destruction and most of the biological weapons on earth. We are also the leading supplier of weapons to the worst dictators on earth.

Tenth, we have nearly the lowest rated education program in the world.

The shame I feel, as an American, makes me want to make America better. I hope to be proud of an America that is a true democracy, has national healthcare, frees its political prisoners, provides its native people with generous portions of land (like New Zealand), leads the world in ecological solutions to energy and raw material needs, supports democracy worldwide, dismantles its war machine and educates its people well.

NOT A WAR The grinding propaganda machine of the Bush Administration continues to misrepresent its true motives. Can anybody tell me what War the Bushmongers are talking about? Oh! Iraq, you mean that remnant of a once outdated and outgunned military that we supported and befriended before we stabbed him in the back and used him as the fall guy? Do you mean that defenseless Army of starving women, children and old folks that we are going to massacre in the name of Peace and the Christian way? This, my fellow Americans is not a War it is Mass Murder no matter how you look at it. I will challenge you to explain why the only country that is not at peace in the Middle East is Palestine, and we ignore, support and encourage the rogue Gestapo of Sharon, as his thugs murder at will, and defy every international law against humanity. And the U.S. goes after Saddam? We have been bombing this country for 12 years. TWELVE YEARS, my friends!

We have starved and denied these people medical supplies to the tune of 500-thousand children. Dead children, children like your own, grandparents like your own. And I will guarantee you that if Saddam truly had Weapons of Mass Destruction, we would not be Declaring War with Iraq. The bully never challenges his equal.

In two years, the occupation of the White House has emptied the coffers and by all indications committed treason and is punishable by impeachment. Bush must step down or be brought down. He is not worthy of representing the people of America. Along with Chaney, Rumsfield, Ashcroft, Sharon, and Rice; they are a direct threat to America, not Saddam.

SAYING THANKS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Everybody gets that same feeling of dread, even if you're not doing anything wrong. You know the one: you're driving down the street, it's dark, and you see a car behind you that's been there for just a little too long. You don't think much of it until you both pass under a streetlight and you look in the rear-view mirror. Shit! It's a cop! How long has he been there? You immediately hit the brakes, regardless of how fast you were going.

Yeah, everyone hates the cops. They're mean, arrogant, and rude when they pull you over. They act like you robbed a bank when all you did was roll through a stop sign. Plus, all they do is eat doughnuts.

And they're all corrupt.

But then someone breaks into your house or your car is stolen. And who's the first person you call and expect to come save you? A cop.

We all read the stories about police corruption and police brutality. The headlines usually read "Unarmed man shot while fleeing police", or "Police chief resigns amid corruption scandal." But what about the good ones?

Sure they don't make for good headlines, but these are the guys who think there are just way too many criminals and miscreants walking the streets and it is up to them to put them away. Unfortunately, they don't always go away quietly.

But that is why they wear a badge. That is why they carry a gun and wear a bulletproof vest. And have you ever thought about that for a minute? Most of us put on a uniform that consists of pants and a shirt, maybe a tool belt if you're in construction. These guys' tool belts consist of handcuffs, mace, and a big stick to beat people on the head

when they're all juiced up on crack. And if that doesn't work, they have a 9mm pistol on their hip and a 12-gauge shotgun in their car. And the cop hopes to God that the other guy doesn't have one, but just in case he does, he puts on a vest made of Kevlar. Don't you think that if your job required you to wear a vest that stopped bullets, you too might be a little edgy when pulling people over during traffic stops?

But we never hear about these guys, the guys who protect us from ourselves. We only hear about the bad ones. Then we get an incident like the one two weeks ago and it hammers home to us just how much these guys can sacrifice at any given moment.

There were lots of people going to that ice cream parlor in the Kapolei Shopping Center March 4, but Detective Glen Alvin Gaspar of the Honolulu Police Department and his partner went there because he had a tip that Shane Mark would be there. Shane Mark was wanted on an attempted-murder charge, and Gaspar and his partner were going to bring him in.

Unfortunately, Mark had a gun, and when he resisted, the gun went off and Gaspar went down. Once again, a violent criminal was out on parole and jacked up on "ice". Both factors should be given much more attention than they currently get. But what also should be focused on is that policemen do a job where a slight mistake can mean never picking your kids up from school again. It means a high school football team plays with one less father in the stands. It means a girl has to find someone else to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day.

Drugs like "ice" are an epidemic and our justice system allows way too many violent criminals to walk free. We can sit around and debate how much of a problem it is or what should be done about it. But for guys like Gaspar and his fellow colleagues, they don't have the luxury of debate. They just have to put on the vest, strap on the gun, and go deal with it.

Hail!

Now it's official: most Americans are idiots.

Decades of budget cuts in education are finally yielding results, a fact confirmed by CNN's poll of March 16, which shows that an astonishing 51 percent of the public believe that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was responsible for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

There is no reason to think that.

None. True, George W. Bush has asserted the existence of indirect links between low-level Al Qaeda operatives and Iraqi intelligence officials - a lame lie repeatedly denied by the CIA - but even our professional prevaricator has never gone so far as to accuse Saddam of direct involvement in 9-11. Despite their increasingly tenuous grasp on reality, not even the Bush Administration's most fervent hawks deny that the secular dictator of Iraq is a mortal enemy of the Islamist extremists of Al Qaeda. No mainstream media outlet has ever reported otherwise.

So why do these pinheads think such a thing?

Simple: the official Bushie pretexts given for launching a unilateral invasion of Iraq don't stick. If Saddam was going to launch nukes or anthrax missiles in our direction, he would have done so during the last dozen years, while

American warplanes were pulverizing his military installations with weekly bombing raids. He'd certainly let us have it this week, now that Bush is revving up the war he wanted all along - but he won't, because he can't.

Furthermore, no one really believes that the GOP is interested in liberating the oppressed people of Iraq. America's role in the world, after all, typically involves funding dictators - as Bush is currently doing in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan - not democrats.

Like a befuddled chemistry lab student who works backwards from the answer in order to ensure the correct results, the Moron Majority have talked themselves into an excuse they can live with for a war they can't otherwise morally justify. Denial, after all, isn't just a river in Egypt.

By a two-to-one margin, Americans think that their country should adhere to its tradition of attacking other countries in selfdefense only, never preemptively. Thirtyseven percent say that they support an invasion of Iraq only with UN approval. This war against Iraq fulfills neither of these conditions, so Americans have managed to morph Bush's insinuations about a Saddam-Al Qaeda link into full-on blame.

Sure, we're about to begin killing innocent men, women and children over in Iraq. It's not self-defense, so let's just call it "vengeance for 9-11." Does that work for

you? Great. Osama's gotta be laughing like a hyena now that the heat's off.

There is some good news in all this. I know, "good" is a relative term if you're reading this in a bomb shelter under Baghdad or trapped at your work station under the rubble of an office building some Islamist wired and brought down on your head. But the war on Iraq is likely to lead to the political demise of the man whose evil and illegitimate rule currently represents the greatest threat to stability and peace in the world: George W. Bush.

Win or lose, Iraq will probably be Bush's Waterloo. Victory over Saddam's armed forces is a given; just as a company's announcement of previously-anticipated profits fails to deliver an uptick in stock price, military success is already assumed by the market of public opinion. That's why, even after it became evident that he'd be fighting this war alone (plus Tony Blair, minus the British public), Bush had to go ahead. His right-wing base, the part of the electorate that craves a belligerent president to protect it from future 9-11s, would have otherwise deserted him.

Even if Bush delivers a best-case scenario - quick defeat, minimal U.S. military and Iraqi civilian casualties - it won't do him any good. His supporters already expect that.

Things are most likely to go wrong when Bush can least afford it, during next year's campaign. Don't believe Kurdish promises to rejoin a federalized Iraq - they've had de facto independence for 12 years and they're not coming back. Turkey is already threatening to invade Iraqi Kurdistan, and they're leaning on their own Kurds. Hoping to neutralize its unruly neighbor, Iran is arming the Shiite majority. Civil war is more than likely, possibly leading to the disintegration of Turkey and an American excuse for an attack on Iran.

It's impossible to predict the effects of prolonged American occupation of an Arab country; increased terrorism, regional instability and even greater Muslim hostility to the U.S. and its allies seem likely. But a failure to establish a long-term U.S. military presence throughout the country could prove even more damaging than a quick pullout. If Iraq follows Afghanistan into neglect, political disintegration and anarchy, we'll be able to count our resentful new enemies by the tens of millions.

American alliances and relations with the UN and NATO have been stretched to the breaking point. By launching an illegal, unsanctioned invasion of a sovereign nation, the U.S. has abandoned its moral standing.

We are, by definition, a rogue state. More frightening than that, foreign leaders from Paris to Berlin to Beijing to Moscow are starting to count more on one another than on us.

This means trouble for us, sure, but also for Bush as we notice our nation's loss of prestige.

As always, however, the fools will save us from themselves. The 51 percent who currently believe what is patently false will ultimately conclude that they were duped by Bush (though it's not really true). Like stupid Americans before them (those who bought into the Domino Theory, Joe McCarthy and the necessity of interning JapaneseAmericans in concentration camps), they'll wonder what the hell they were thinking. And they'll have lots of time to think about it, what with not having a job and all.

Then they'll vote for an Unnamed Democrat, currently leading Bush 48 to 44 percent in the Quinnipiac poll released March 6.

LEAD STORIES Making a claim on British television in March that should alarm all News of the Weird readers, James Watson (co-discoverer of the structure of DNA) said he saw no reason why "stupidity" could not some day be corrected by gene therapy just as other "disorders" are now being addressed. "If you're really stupid, I would call that a disease," he said, on the Channel 4 documentary "DNA." "I'd like to get rid of (stupidity)."

AMERICA'S WORSENING GULLIBILITY PROBLEM According to a December Federal Trade Commission lawsuit, Mark Nutritionals Inc., of San Antonio, Texas, earned $190 million in four years selling a $40 solution that guaranteed weight loss even if the user ate lots of pizza, beer, tacos and doughnuts. And in November, the new Kaiser Medical Center hospital in Fremont, Calif., staged a special ceremony, by the hospital's chaplain, using symbols and inspirational words on rocks, to battle "spirits" that some nurses believed were responsible for beds moving and doors slamming on their own. And at a press conference in Boise, Idaho, in December, Genesis World Energy spokespeople introduced the Edison Device, which they said will produce 20 years' electricity for a home using only a bathtub's worth of water as fuel (but reporters could not examine it or ask any questions about it).

BACKLOG OF LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Timothy Baker was back in jail in Waco, Texas, in January, hours after he had escaped while being held for aggravated robbery. His getaway had taken him to Baylor University, where he broke into a building in order to find a change of clothes from his orange jumpsuit. The building was the Fine Arts Center, where Baker raided a costume closet. He apparently thought he would be inconspicuous if he changed into a 19th-century green wool costume (with rubber galoshes) that made him look like a "leprechaun," said the sheriff later, after Baker was spotted on the street and re-arrested. Said the chairman of the theater department, "He just really stood out."

THE LITIGIOUS SOCIETY High school senior Brian Delekta filed a lawsuit in February against the school system in Memphis, Mich., alleging that he actually did A-plus work in one course but only received an A for it, and that his average should be even higher than it is (and Delekta was ranked first in his class by the end of his junior year). The course at issue here is a

"work experience" course in which he served as a paralegal in a law office and did a fine job, according to his supervisor. That supervisor happened to be his mother, Diane, who said she meant that he did A-plus, not A, work.

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Robert Covey, 21, said he found a bullet at around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 and decided it would be cool to put it on the ground and shoot at it with his BB gun. He hit it on the third shot, causing the bullet to explode, sending fragments into his right forearm and left middle finger. He was treated at a Hot Springs, Ark., hospital and released.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Allison Adams, 23, a veterinary technician for Wildlife Rescue in Austin, Texas, warms up traumatized baby animals (squirrels, kittens, rabbits, etc.) by putting them in her bra (while she's wearing it), according to a profile in the Austin American-Statesman in January. Her report: Squirrels are the hardest; possums the easiest; she's done it about 75 times; no, they don't itch; her fiancé is OK with it (even though he was deprived of a hug once because of "hissing possums").

READERS' CHOICE Leonard Garland, 20, and a partner were arrested in Ashland, Mass., in February, after Garland had the bright idea to crash a party at a private home he just happened to be driving by, thinking that a party was a good place to find customers for his drug business. Garland walked in and struck up a conversation, eventually enticing a guest to ask him about drugs. Garland had cocaine on him, but when his "customer" wanted more, Garland made a phone call to his connection. However, the connection said he would not go near Ashland because Ashland's main narcotics detective, Mark Gutwill, was too aggressive. Unknown to Garland, the soiree he happened into was an off-duty party of police officers, and the potential "customer" he had randomly chosen to talk to was Detective Mark Gutwill, who soon arrested him.

The Department of Health in Great Britain (which has the highest teen pregnancy rate in Western Europe) drew criticism for its latest school sex education program, which suggests to kids the merits of oral sex instead of intercourse. And a woman was detained for shoplifting from a Price Chopper grocery store in Rutland, Vt., with about 100 unpaidfor items (including ice cream, meats and videotapes), all skillfully tucked into her coat, purse and bag. And a state child welfare agency seized half of an 11-year-old boy's $220 savings account (built up by doing chores) because his father (whose name was on it, too) was behind on the kid's child support payments (Des Moines, Iowa).

DIVISION RESULTS: Saturday February 15th

7th Annual Beachfest & Bodyboard contest The 7th annual Pa’ia Bay Beachfest and Bodyboard contest was held on Feb 15th and 16th in mostly sunny, 1-3’ wind swell conditions. Saturday started out windy, with early morning showers. As the day progressed, the surf picked up with the low tide rising gradually all day. The age group divisions were run through finals on Saturday, and awards were given out (including hand carved bodyboards for 1st place trophies) by 4:30pm. Sunday started out with small conditions and a low

tide, but the wind was down and it was sunny all day. The “special” divisions were run through finals on Sunday, with raffle and awards complete by 4pm. Our newest division, “freestyle surf” was a hit, with tough competition and “sick tricks” being thrown down in 12’ shorebreak waves.

Fresh hip-hop and punk rock sounds were scratched and faded from DJ Boomshot and DJ Malik, blasted through a sound system from AVHQ inside the house and through huge speakers facing out in the water for the

competitors. There were 74 competitors surfing in 9 divisions (with multiple division entries by most contestants), and a support crew of 6 staff members and 27 volunteers.

1st-6th place winners received prizes and awards, with additional prizes raffled during the event.

Not your Brand Name Punk Rock of today

Generic, the punk band, formed in 1995 on Oahu, and enjoyed a solid hardcore following, as they played all the Volcom skate shows, along with the ’98 Vans Warped Tour line-up, and most recently, the 2002 Vans Triple Crown on Oahu. They’ve played with Suicidal Tendencies, The Queers, The Line, Homegrown, Strife, Absolute, Scared of Chaka, Sack Lunch, 311, Vandals, Blink 182, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Pennywise, Face to Face, Pepper, Damien Marley, Long Beach Short Bus, and Slightly Stoopid – uh, not to “name just a few” or anything!

The standard punk rock band breakup ensued in ’99, as drugs and calamity, irreconcilable differences between members, and general malaise dominated. Missing the mayhem of performing live together, original members Dave (vocals), and Danny (drums) regrouped with new lead guitarist Rollo, rhythm guitarist Garret, and bassist John. Their music recalls the old-school punk of the ‘80s – fast, hard and loud, and charmingly replete with gruff, nihilistic vocals, potty-mouth lyrics and street-punk anthems about personal issues we can all relate to: loss, pain, anger, frustration and redemption, and the joys of cold beer.

Generic will be giving their pure-adrenaline, slam and bash funfest of punk performance at DeanO’s Maui Pizza Cafe, Saturday at 9:30pm, presented by The Point 101.1FM, and thanks to Ace of “Radio Rehab”. Zero Tolerance will be opening, back from a brief hiatus recording, and ready to blow minds and doors off with their razored onslaught of rock! Prepare yourselves for the fist-pumping, heart attack clusterfuck carwreck of a good and proper mosh pit – feel the wrath of exploding electricity as it sears its way through your body and fries your brain into a sweet pulpy mass of goo. Rip your heart from your chest and take a bite – it’s bitter-bitter, and you like it that way... Ah, the power and glory of music!

So what would you call your music?

A friend of mine described it as “angry, raw, gutter-punk”...

Danny: Yeah, that’s good. ‘Angry, raw, gutter-punk’? Hmm, I guess so. We’re hardcore punk, I guess. Not like we’re trying to sound heavy and mean or tough or anything, but I’ve heard it called that, yeah. In the original band, me and the bass player were both metal guys, and Dave and the other two guitar players were punk guys, so the music came out kinda – it wasn’t 100% punk, it wasn’t metal either. It was, like, hard – I don’t know if you’ve heard the album or not – I don’t think it’s fully punk...

Dave: I would say, “aggressive – very aggressive, self-help, frustration release” music.

Lots of bands break up due to excessive partying – is that what happened with you? Do you still party?

Danny: If “beer” is partying, then I would say yes. No, nothing too out of control these days. Before, with the original lineup, it was pretty bad. Well, things got in the way of progress, you know? And priorities changed – you know how that whole thing works.

Priorities change and the focus is on other things. I just didn’t want to be around it so I said adios.

How did you come up with the name?

Danny: They were trying out drummers, and this one guy – I don’t know his name, but – right before me, he played with them and he didn’t want to, and one of his comments was, “Eh, it’s cool but, your music’s kind of generic.” (Laughs) Thus, the name. (More laughs) You asked, so...

What do you do outside of playing music?

Danny: I work in Radiology. Garret owns a music studio. A lot of punk bands, in fact, practice at his place. He does live recordings, too. John, the bass player, he’s a construction guy. He is one of those guys that does everything – he’s good at everything. Rollo is a computer guy – he works at CompUSA. Dave: I promote shows, and try to help out local bands, writers, artists. For ten years, I’ve been trying to do that – promote them, book shows, back them up in any way I can, teach them. It’s weird being from Hawaii, and people finding out you’re in a punk band. They’re like, ‘What?! A punk band? From where?!

Where’s the ukulele’s?’ We’re just expected to wear aloha shirts, play ukuleles, and make you a lei or something. I think that’s very closeminded of the world and I’m about to shed some light on these kids. There’s a lot of kids that are into this [music], they just don’t know where to put it into. So I opened up this thing with this other guy, and we booked shows back in the day, back in the ‘90’s, called the Fast Zone. We’d give all these guys a chance. Just ‘cause they’re from Hawaii, doesn’t mean they’re less capable of playing music, like anyone from England or New York. I think sometimes we’re overlooked because of the fact that we’re all the way out here. I think a lot of people missed their window of opportunity because of that. I don’t think that’s fair. I

any band with good drummers!

Dave: I try to keep an open mind. We’re trying to appeal to the kids, so I listen to the kid’s stuff, like emo bands and hip-hop a little bit. Lyrically, hip-hop is kinda tricky, the way they mix the words up and rhyme it up in certain areas.

What other influences do the new band members bring to the table?

Danny: Our guitar player, Garret, he’s into a band called Thursday, and old punk stuff, also Pennywise, Strung Out. Yeah, Strung Out is one of my favorite bands here – those guys are good! To me, Strung Out is punk rock with a lot of skill. Two to three years ago, they did a Punk-On-A-Rock show here. Their music is like...imagine four or five guys, and each guy in the band is very, very skilled [as musicians], and you put them together and play punk.

Individually, every guy is good. It’s kind of rare in a band, so...they’re awesome.

What did you listen to when you were growing up?

Danny: Uh, KISS, of course! (Laughs) Kiss, Ozzy...I was actually a metal head in high school. Dave got me into punk. He’d call me, “Hey, let’s make a punk band!” I was like, ‘Punk band? Nah.’ Then I was in a metal cover band, but it broke up, and I wasn’t doing anything for a month. He called me again, I showed up and it was Generic and it was good – all good. Yeah, it was cool.

Dave: When I was a real young kid, my mom played piano and accordion, so we played everything. But then I listened to Kiss, to heavy metal, and then in ‘81-’82, I got a Clash album, and the Sex Pistols – and that just changed everything. It was like, I cut my hair, got a mohawk. Went to school and all my friends were like, ‘What?! I thought you were down with the metal?’ ‘Uh, not no more!’ I totally

What’s the best show you’ve ever played?

Dave: Definitely with Generic. We’ve played with a lot of the big mainland bands, but the one for me which was, like, personally – I was going through hard times in my life, contemplated suicide, got kicked out of my house, my girlfriend left me – and it was like, to be on the stage with these guys who were my icons, my heroes when I was younger – it was the Suicidal Tendencies show. The thing about that show which was really weird was Volcom was running that show, and we were a Volcom band so, and once they had their foot in the door, I was kind of allowed to go mess things up (diabolical laugh) – so every time they bring a mainland band here, they put the local bands’ volume low for them, which was junk. So the mainland band would come out all “RRRRRRGH!” and the Volcom band would sound like “keekeekee”. I was, like, ‘That’s junk!’ So what happened was, we said okay, from the last band to us, the volume is all going to be the same. The way that we played, and the way the crowd reacted – everything was there, it was so...Utopia. There was chaos all around me, bodies flying by, yelling, screaming, and like, after the show, I went out to the back, sat up against the wall, and I saw steam come off of my head! And the guitarist and singer from Suicidal came up at different times and said, ‘Hey man, good show’ and I was, like, ‘Whoa! Thanks, man.’

That was really cool. Then after the show, like twenty to thirty people came up to me, and were just like, ‘Hey man, you guys stole the show – you guys blew Suicidal away!’ I still can’t accept that, like no, it’s impossible. But for those thirty people to think that, there had to be a few more, maybe, that didn’t tell me that, you know what I mean? Okay, maybe two

Avril Lavigne? Poor girl, she’s cool, but okay, she claims she’s making “skate punk”, but I try to picture her in like, 1983, at an Agent Orange show, and her band’s playing... she’s getting booed off the stage, people are throwing shit. I’d like to see Green Day play with Agnostic Front or Black Flag, okay – they’d get beat up! always try to help these kids, try to give them that chance ‘cause they can do it just as good as anyone from the mainland. It’s harder, but you know, if they really want it, they’ll continue. Even writers, photographers, any artist from Hawaii, I try to promote or book them with art shows or magazines – try to get them a gig somewhere so that they can continue. If I have this knowledge in my head, I have to use it to help shed some light on these people.

There’s so much talent here.

What are you listening to these days?

Danny: Well, my favorite band is Tool. I like any band with a really good drummer.

Tool is – Danny Carey is unreal. That’s a band that you either like them or you really don’t like them – there’s no in-between. Tool just sucks you in – I’m just 100% into those guys.

Slipknot is phenomenal – yeah, they’re a good band. Pennywise is cool. Anytime they come, we hang out with them – they’re cool guys. So yeah, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Tool, Slipknot,

changed my attitude, I changed everything. For some reason, I just continued with it.

Have you played in other bands prior to Generic?

Danny: Oh yeah! At one point, I was in three bands at once. It was kind of hectic. I played in Potluck with two of the guys from Generic – John and Garret. It’s just a side, fun thing. I’ve been doing that for a couple of years, just to keep busy. The more you play, the better you get, you know?

Dave: I did a little side thing with the guys from ‘Iron Haze’, a legendary punk band from here called ‘Thirteen Dead’. The lead singer left, and I helped them out, we did a few shows. I played in a band in Florida – ‘Suburban Nightmare’. I played in a band in Spain, called ‘Nuevo Ritmo’. My first heavy metal band was called the ‘Dog(s) of Kcor’ – if you spell it backwards (without the ‘s’), it becomes the ‘Gods of Rock’ – yeah, only metal guys would think of something like that!

or three more, but – for them, those guys’ opinions, with the sound being the same, that was telling me that, ‘your doing what you’re doing is good, and you can hang with these guys, and you’re from Hawaii? And you can do it just like them, and you proved it just now.

You just need your volume turned up a little bit!’ I will never forget that show. That was probably the show of my life. I can say ‘I opened up for Suicidal, man - what’s up?!’ I don’t have any money, but hey I opened up for Suicidal!

Have you ever played shows with Generic on the mainland?

Danny: No, never – not to play. I’ve been there to see Tool and Kiss. The farthest we’ve played off this rock is Kauai. We did Kauai once or twice, and Maui – this next time coming up on Saturday will be our second time there. The last time was in ’98, at the Skate Park they just opened up. Unfortunately, the show got shut down.

Why did you get shut down?

Danny: A lot of our music isn’t really conducive to wholesome, family entertainment.

There were some mothers there [who] found some of the language offensive so the cops were there and they shut it down. It was a big to-do.

What’s your relationship with Volcom?

Danny: We were sponsored – meaning we’d get free clothes and stuff. We’re good friends with Clint, he’s the Hawaii Volcom guy – the head guy. Anytime there’s a Volcom show, he calls us and we play. In fact, the following Saturday, when we get back from Maui, we’ll be playing at the Blaisdell Arena. It’s not going to be like an arena show, it’s like a skate demo thing. So we’re just gonna be playing outside or something. Anytime Volcom needs us to do a show, we’re there.

How come you’re not an official Volcom band?

Danny: Actually, we were. We were on some compilation albums they put us on. Some of their surf videos, too. A couple of years ago, they dropped everybody – well, not Volcom. A band called The Line – they’re a punk band – they kind of run Stone Entertainment, the sub company from Volcom – they dropped everybody except for a couple of bands, like Pepper [Oahu punk band] and The Line.

Some people would ask why “your life sucks” living in Hawaii, or how you write such angry music living here, in “paradise”?

Danny: I’m not an angry guy. That’s just the way [the music] came out, not ‘cause we said, ‘Hey, let’s write an angry song!’ I’m not angry about living in Hawaii – I think the mainland sucks. The people are cocks there!

Dave: ‘My life sucks’ – Everybody says that in their lifetime! It’s like, yeah, my life sucks right now, but one day, I’m going to be so above you. It does get better. It’s kinda like laughing at ourselves, ‘cause everyone says it.

How do you come up with the lyrics?

Dave: All the songs are my own thoughts, actually. A lot of the songs I wrote when I was fifteen – like “Whore”, which I wrote about a girl I loved, who said I wasn’t good enough for her, and writing the song just made me feel better. I love women, I love my mother - it’s not about that. With “March of the Lesbians”, I had to talk to this women’s group who blacklisted us from playing shows. So I had to go in front of this committee of women to explain to them, tell them about the women in my family who are lesbians, and how I love them. That song is actually just a story of what happened to me one day. It was about the first time I felt intimidated by a group of women – it was a bunch of girls on motorcycles. There were, like, seven or eight of them, and me and my dog were walking to a grocery store, and this girl was like, ‘eh, where’s the bar around here?’ and they were right by a gay bar. They were leaving it, so I figured, I might as well tell them where another gay bar is, and she started snapping at me! And I get home, and I’m like

‘Whoa! Me and my dog were about to get our asses kicked by these women on motorcycles!

They were about to stomp me, about to pound me! I can’t believe that! I just went to get groceries, you know?’ That’s what the whole thing was about that song...I don’t have anything against lesbians. To me, it’s like, to each his own. That’s why it’s important to me that people don’t take those lyrics and think we poke fun at people – it’s just a story. Some of those songs on there are just stories.

What do you think of the current mutation of pop music and punk?

Danny: The commercialism of punk?

Yeah, to be honest, I don’t really give a damn.

If it’s good, I’ll listen to it!

Dave: See that to me is a trip, ‘cause like, they’re getting the wrong idea. The kids are not getting fed the right scene. Somehow someone transformed shit to look ‘punk’, the style or whatever, but the music is a little ‘happier’. But

to me, it wasn’t about being happy. It was about being confused, being angry at something. And being who you really wanted to be – not dressing like someone. You couldn’t go to Hot Topic, you had to make your own shirts.

It’s good, because we can make money making music, and you don’t have to be mainstream.

But the music to me, it’s just not punk...What’s that girl’s name, Avril Lavigne? Poor girl, she’s cool, but okay, she claims she’s making “skate punk”, but I try to picture her in like, ’83, at an Agent Orange show, and her band’s playing... she’s getting booed off the stage, people are throwing shit – I mean, there’s no way, it’s impossible. That never could happen. I’d like to see Green Day play with Agnostic Front or Black Flag, okay – they’d get beat up! The music is good, they just have the categories wrong – it’s not punk. It’s like, power pop, with an edge. But punk?! It’s not only music, it’s definitely a lifestyle and a mind frame.

What’s the scene like on Oahu?

Danny: Well, the scene here is...(sigh)...it’s lame, I’m sorry to say!

Five to six years ago – into the late 90’s, it was awesome! The shows were good, the turnout was good

and all that stuff. And now, you go to shows and not too many people are there.

Why do you think that is? We have the same problem on Maui with low turnout at shows for local bands...

Dave: You’ve gotta have a venue – where kids can show their stuff off and whatever. You know, build something to perform in, to show people what they’re capable of. I don’t know if it is like this on Maui, but all the clubs just come and go. Also, just educating some of these kids more in the arts, maybe. Open minds...

Danny: The scene that we were playing – I think all the bands we used to play with back then, you know, eventually got older, settled down and moved on. There’s always new bands popping up all the time and actually, a lot of them here are good, like Neural Void, Tweaked, and Potluck. Potluck plays once in a while – not too often – for fun.

Where do you play on Oahu – what venues are cool?

Danny: Right now the venues are – this place called Pink Cadillac in Waikiki, and this other place called the Coffee Factory, which is where a lot of the up-n-coming bands play.

Why did you decide to come to Maui to play?

Dave: I’ve been waiting for you guys! I feel like people on Maui are my neglected cousins that I’ve wanted to party with!

Danny: I met Ace (Point 101.1FM’s “Radio Rehab”) at the Kualoa Ranch show in October. I hadn’t seen him since, but I guess he wanted us to come to Maui, so...We’re stoked It’s gonna be a

good show!

Any future gigs besides Volcom next week?

Danny: Right now, we have nothing scheduled. We don’t play very often because...Well, I mean, back in the ol’ heyday, when the scene was good, we played a lot and then it gets boring, for the band and for the people. They’re like, “oh, they’re playing again (snores).” And plus, there’s only limited venues anyway. You know, if there’s a lot of places to play, then that’s a different story – you could play all the time, but it’s such a finite area, such a small scene.

Can we expect a new album from you anytime soon?

Danny: We’ll see how things go. It’s kind of slow and steady with the new stuff, but if it all works out...We just take it practice by practice.

We’d like to – I mean, of course!

What is Generic’s philosophy? Why do you still play music together?

What do you want to do with the band in the future?

Danny: Wow, that’s a Barbara Walters question. To be brutally honest, when we were a lot younger, we wanted to make it big – go to the mainland, blah blah blah – to do music for a living, which I’d love to do. But as time goes on, priorities change and grow up a little bit and it kind of shifts, but now, well for me – I play ‘cause it’s fun. It’s therapeutic, stressrelease, and it’s always fun to play music. It’s not a money thing, we just play for the fun of playing. I mean, I’d like to do it for a living, but if something would’ve happened, it would have happened by now.

You’re not looking to sign a record deal or anything?

Danny: Well, if someone wants to put one in front of my face, that’s a different story (laughs).

What advice do you have for new punk or metal bands trying to play venues in Hawaii?

Danny: Quit! Quit, and get a job at Taco Bell. No, I’m just kidding. Are they gonna stay in Maui? (laughs) Plan on not playing too often. I’m not slamming bands or anything, but in Hawaii, it’s such a geographically isolated – like on the mainland, you can just jump in a van and go. Here you can’t do that, so you’re kinda stuck. Unless you’re willing to pick up your life and move to the mainland and do that, but... Doing it locally? Eh....I mean, not to sound pessimistic about it but you’re not gonna get too far on Hawaii, I think.

And metal or punk or any kind of alternative kind of thing...

So why play at all?

Danny: ‘Cause it’s fun to play! We need the energy, and to release stress and all that kind of stuff. We do it ‘cause we love doing it and that’s it, you know? Instead of being all bitter on stage, it’s easier to watch a band when they’re having fun with it – it’s easier to enjoy.

Hopefully, we’ll be that way on stage, on Saturday!

Ba-Le: French? Vietnamese? LOBSTER! There’s a certain mystery in Kahului that I’ve had the distinct pleasure of investigating over the past several years. Ba-Le French Sandwich and Bakery at the Maui Marketplace on Dairy Road is something of a conundrum: it appears to be Vietnamese owned and operated and serves an entire menu of fabulous Vietnamese cuisine, and yet it’s all done under the guise of a French Bakery with a likeness of the Eiffel Tower as its logo. Hmm . . .

strange things are afoot at the Circle K. The restaurant is part of the food court sandwiched (pun intended) into the back corner of the Maui Marketplace, as well as in the Lahaina Cannery Mall. The ambience is bustling and cafeteria-like, complete with brown plastic trays, paper napkins, and the background buzz of many ongoing conversations – hardly a relaxing dining experience.

But sometimes our busy lives force us to eat on the run, and no one serves better food on the fly than Ba-Le.

The real mystery here is how this tiny operation can pump out fresh, flavorful food to their never-ending line of customers all day long without a single glitch. The menu is extensive, covering salads, rice entrees, cold and hot noodle dishes, authentic Vietnamese soups (Pho), Vietnamese style saimin, sandwiches, breads and specialty items (including ham and headcheese(?) by the pound), and more kinds of Tapioca than you could ever eat. The prices range from a low of $1.05 for a croissant (Aha! The French connection!) to a high of $6.75 for the Vietnamese style Beef Teriyaki.

The rice entrees are simple affairs with Jasmine rice, a small green salad with sliced tomatoes, Vietnamese style macaroni salad, and the main entrée of your choice. Options include pork chops, short ribs, spicy lemongrass chicken, ginger chicken, shredded pork . . . you get the idea. I’ve tried a few of the items from this list and while they’re tasty and satisfying I think the soups and sandwiches are the way to go here.

The best bargain in the house, for me, is the Pho. For only $6.50 you get a huge bowl of fragrant broth brewed overnight with marrow bones and brisket flanks. Whether you choose rare steak, chicken, seafood, tofu, or the special (with all the real deal goodies like tendon and tripe), you’ll get a generous helping of thin vermicelli noodles and a large boat of bean sprouts, basil sprigs, chile peppers and lemon wedges to garnish your pauper’s feast. There’s plenty of sauces at the counter, hot and otherwise, to tailor-make your meal.

This is the best feeling, belly-filling bargain I’ve seen around - definitely your loss if you don’t go get some for yourself.

When I’m so rushed that I can’t even sit down to eat my Pho, I’ll order a Lemongrass Chicken sandwich and make it out the door within five minutes. It’s the only sandwich I’ve tried because it’s so damn good I can’t bring myself to order anything else. But if you don’t trust me there’s a huge list of other options, from turkey, tuna, and pastrami to tofu, char siu, and the special with ham, pate, head cheese, and steam pork (I get the feeling that special means weird in Vietnamese). All sandwiches are available on French bread or croissant (hence the Eiffel Tower) and range from only $3.00 to $4.00! Simply amazing.

What’s that? You don’t even have five minutes? First, step back and take a good look at where you live and where your priorities lie. Second, stop by Ba-Le anyway and grab an order of Summer Rolls with peanut dipping sauce. They’re fresh, yummy, and already made and ready to go on the counter; two minutes tops.

This week’s wine pick comes from Umbria, Italy, and is the Falesco 2001 Vitiano. The producer of Falesco Vitiano is located in the Lazio/Umbria border, which is south of Tuscany, Italy. Falesco was established in 1979 and is focused on keeping up with new age technique with old-world varietals. Owner, winemaker, Ricardo Cotarella, is no doubt one of Italy’s smartest and best winemakers.

The 2001 Vitiano is a wine made up of 33% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Sangiovese. The body of this wine looks as if it’s very rich, indeed. It is dark in color and possesses a very appealing flavor to the nose.

On the palate there is a lot to chat about, with its jammy boysenberry juice that leads to a leather-earthiness, long finish. You will probably want to consume this wine now so that those fresh qualities will be there. This wine is a crowd-pleaser and for the price, you can’t go wrong. Enjoy!

The Spirit of Irish Dance Though separated by 11,000 miles and a world of cultural difference, Ireland and Maui share some notable characteristics.

Both verdant islands are world-renowned for the beauty, charm and friendliness of their native inhabitants, and both have rich traditions of folk music and dance. This week the Irish International Dance Company, world famous cultural ambassadors from the Emerald Isle, will bring their “Spirit of the Dance” back to the Valley Isle.

Hula, the native movement art form of Hawaii, has a sensuous flavor that recalls the languor and abundance of this Polynesian paradise. Originally a form of sacred expression performed solely by men, hula has evolved over the generations to include secular themes and dancers of both genders. The gentle sway of an alluring wahine’s hips is perhaps the most universally recognized image of

hula, one that brings to mind humid sunsets and sweet, ripe fruit.

By contrast, traditional Irish dance has an exuberance that evokes the pastoral gaiety of its pagan past. In addition to expressing Ireland’s indomitable spirit and proud heritage, the high stepping, foot-stomping reels and jigs keep dancers warm against the wild winter weather. The most ancient roots of modern Irish step dances may have grown in the mead-enlivened soil of nature-worshipping druidic rites.

Dance has been an important aspect of Irish community life from antiquity to the present, staying vibrant through the various conversions and conquests that Ireland endured.

During the 18th Century regional dance masters would instruct students in the traditional techniques and develop their own signature steps for performances and competitions. The highly stylized solo and step dance forms seen

in the popular modern productions began to develop at the end of the 18th Century.

This modern development reached a zenith in the early 1990’s when a series of highly successful large-scale productions brought Irish dance to worldwide attention. “Riverdance” started the phenomenon in 1994 and others quickly followed. The Irish International Dance Company was formed in 1996 and began performing “Spirit of the Dance” in London in September of that year, just a few months after the premiere of Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance.” The company’s first run was a smashing success, far exceeding expectations and the show has been touring the world receiving awards and accolades ever since. The company now comprises six troupes, some touring and some in residence in venues around the U.S., including at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. Their combined performances have entertained more than 20 million people worldwide. The show has been updated and expanded since the company last toured Hawaii and is expected to wow audiences once again.

“Spirit of the Dance” combines spectacular traditional Irish dances with other international styles including Flamenco and Salsa to create a captivating and electrifying show.

Beautiful costumes, invigorating music and exquisite choreography all blend to highlight the seamless skill of the highly trained dancers, but it is their obvious joy in sharing these traditions that is most inspiring. This generosity of spirit is not confined to the boundaries of the performance hall: members of the company also presented outreach programs at two of Maui’s schools and taught a master class on Tuesday to introduce the techniques of Irish dance to Maui’s dancers.

Anyone who enjoys lively productions and high-energy dance will find that this rare opportunity to see some of the world’s top performers of Irish dance makes for a very special and entertaining evening. The Irish International Dance Company’s big heart, bold spirit and flashy footwork are sure to leave Maui’s eyes a’ smiling.

Missing The Oscars The 2003 Oscar Race

Alison Lohman in “White Oleander” : Too fresh a talent for the Academy

As movie fans excitedly enter picks for their Oscar favorites in office pools across the country, the nominees are busy writing and rewriting acceptance speeches that may never see the bright lights of the Kodak stage. But burning questions about films and actors conspicuously missing from the list of Oscar nominations will make up considerable water cooler conversations about how and why certain remarkable cinematic efforts were shunned by the Academy.

Alison Lohman's outstanding performance in "White Oleander" was every bit equal to Best Actress nominees Salma Hayek ("Frida"), Nicole Kidman ("The Hours"), Diane Lane ("Unfaithful"), Julianne Moore ("Far From Heaven") or Renee Zellweger ("Chicago”). Except "White Oleander" is Lohman's first 'big' film and she's too fresh a talent for the Academy to formally acknowledge with a nomination. Renee Zellweger should take home the sleek statue for her sensational work in "Chicago," if Julianne Moore's tempting dramatic fruit in "Far From Heaven" doesn't tip the scale in her favor. Nonetheless, Alison Lohman's name will be bandied about for a winning performance that firmly strikes anyone who's seen "White Oleander."

Adrien Brody (Best Actor nomination for "The Pianist") would probably not give as eloquent an acceptance speech as the supremely experienced Michael Caine (nominated for "The Quiet American"), but Brody's startling performance in Polanski's exquisite film is something that will be

highly revered throughout history. "The Pianist" promises to incarnate the fall guy for this year's Oscars based on the public's (and likely the Academy's) predisposition against Roman Polanski for his past sexual transgressions, but whose astonishing film should legitimately sweep the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director. Those coveted honors will likely go to "Chicago" (for Best Picture), to Jack Nicholson (for Best Actor for his admirable yet wasted performance in the contemptible "About Schmidt"), and to Rob Marshall (Best Director - "Chicago"). The fact that Greg Kinnear's name is missing from the list of Best Actor nominees for his poignant work on Paul Schrader's "Auto Focus" signals the Academy's neglectful eye for Schrader's well-crafted biopic about television actor Bob Crane, which also included significant supporting actor work from Willem Dafoe.

Of the Best Supporting Actor category, I trust that Chris Cooper (nominated for "Adaptation") will take home a figurine for his emotional high wire act in a flaky movie grounded by his fearless sense of flawed humanity. Ed Harris ("The Hours"), Paul Newman (""Road To Perdition"), John C. Reilly ("Chicago") and Christopher Walken (with frightful lipstick in "Catch Me If You Can") all did fine work, but none punctured the bubble of earthiness that Chris Cooper brings to bear on every strand of drama he touches.

I still get the heebie-jeebies when I think of Kathy Bates' utterly unnecessary nude scene in "About Schmidt," for which she is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. If John Waters ("Pecker") had written and directed "About Schmidt," the movie wouldn't have garnered any

Oscar nominations, but it would have been entertaining, and the story's camp potential would've been pressed to a proper context. Catherine ZetaJones should breeze the Best Supporting Oscar for her show-stopping work on "Chicago," while Queen Latifah ("Chicago"), Julianne Moore ("The Hours") and Meryl Streep ("Adaptation") applaud pleasantly from their seats.

The Academy loves to give awards for Best Original Screenplay to screenwriting teams who've pulled together to craft an overtly impressive script. The "Gangs of New York" script team of Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillian and Kenneth Lonergan should fit that bill ideally for their fascinating collaboration. Harvey Weinstein will have plenty to crow about on Oscar night, considering the heft of Oscar nominations that Miramax films have in the running. "Gangs of New York" is sure to garner Oscar weight somewhere out of its nine nominations that include Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design and Film Editing. All other contenders for Best Original Screenplay, (Pedro Almodovar - "Talk To Her," Alfonso and Carlos Cuaron - "Y Tu Mama Tambien," Todd Haynes - "Far From Heaven" and Nia Vardalos - "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"), pale by comparison to the vibrant script for "Gangs." The Oscar for Screenplay (Adaptation) should easily go to "Chicago."

The most glaring omission from this year's Oscar nominations is director Fernando Meirelles' Brazilian slum gang epic "City of God" for the Best Foreign Language Film category. "City of God" is an honest and stylistically expansive depiction of three decades of gang warfare on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro with non-actors playing their poverty-ridden lives for the camera. The only other film that approaches "City's" clear-eyed narrative about the merciless imagination of Brazil's downtrodden underclass is Hector Babenco's "Pixote" from more than 20-years ago.

Between the Foreign Language Film nominees, "Zus & Zo (the Netherlands) is liable to beat out "El Crimen del Padre Amaro (Mexico), "Hero" (China), "The Man Without a Past" (Finland) and "Nowhere In Africa" (Germany).

For the Art Direction Oscar, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" should keep the wolves at bay. The award for Cinematography should go to "Gangs of New York" over fellow nominees "Chicago," "Far From Heaven," "The Pianist" and "Road To Perdition." The Oscars for Costume Design, Film Editing and Song should all land easily in the lap of "Chicago."

That leaves John Williams to take Oscar home for his original score for "Catch Me If You Can," and Julie Taymore's "Frida" to win for Makeup. "The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" should collect some heavy metal for Visual Effects, Art Direction, Sound, and Sound Editing.

This last year was one of the best years in a long time for movies, but I wish the Academy had seen and understood the greater brilliance of "Spider-Man" over "The Hours." With only a nomination for Visual Effects, "Spider-Man" will at least get an honorable mention on Oscar night. My worst pang of Oscar pain will come when leftist poseur Michael Moore wins Best Documentary for "Bowling for Columbine" over Stacy Peralta's far superior but not nominated "Dogtown And Z-Boys," while beating out nominees "Winged Migration," "Daughter From Danang," "Prisoner of Paradise" and "Spellbound."

Finally, Hayao Miyazaki's fantastic "Spirited Away" should positively capture Oscar glory for Animated Feature over "Ice Age," Lilo & Stitch," "Spirit; Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Treasure Planet."

Personally, I'd enter Paul Schrader's "Auto Focus" wherever "About Schmidt" received a nomination, I'd enter "Spider-Man" wherever "The Hours" got a selection, and stamp "City of God" across all the names for Best Foreign Language Film. Those few curt measures would make this year's Academy Awards an immaculate race for a year's worth of water cooler bragging rights. Now all I need is a water cooler.

Sprouting from the endless cornfields of Indiana, id obelus doesn't have a lot of hip-hop influences in his environment, and it's apparent when listening to his music. He really can't be compared to any other rapper guys that I've heard. His voice actually sounds kind of like E. T. He raps with a smooth, slow, melodic flow, perfectly complementing the beats, which are normally smooth, slow and melodic as well. Adding a little extra spice and variety to the album, there are guest contributions from an ample assortment of beat makers and vocalists, including Noah 23, Myn Dwun, Elias, Naval Aviator, Earl Heinz Ketchup, and me, among others. Bran Van 3000's second album was slated for release by the Beastie Boys' label, Grand Royal. Sadly for us, the label folded and this album never had a proper release in the U.S. We are missing out on a cheeky dance album that can make a small gathering into a fun little shindig. A little too silly at some points, but never lacking in fun or the funk, it's an interesting listen. Serving up a nice mix of disco, funk, hip-hop, Latin and lots more for your party pleasure, it signals that your evening has started. Throw in a golden list of guest stars such as Eek-A-Mouse (on my favorite track on the album), Curtis Mayfield, Momus, and Youssou N'Dour, and the party gets turned up one more notch. While this album doesn't touch me everywhere I want to be touched, it gets the ball rolling for a good evening. [Tang Li Wheebs] Pretty different musical concepts and stuff. Kind of silly and nutty. THE MAJESTICONS: BEAUTY PARTY (Big Dada, www.bigdada.com) In late 2000, MC/producer Mike Ladd released The Infesticons: Gun Hill Road on an unprepared public. This concept album, chock full of boldly original beats, ranting against the evils of The Majesticons, turned out to be something of a sleeper hit for Ladd.

After releasing his Vernacular Homicide EP, he now presents The Majesticons, another imaginary hip-hop group, but with a completely different sound than on his past releases. The music is very similar to contemporary commercial hip-hop and R&B. One might think Mike Ladd has "sold out" with this album until listening closely. Close examination of the lyrics suggests that the characters comprising The Majesticons are a cross between the typical commercial ghetto/gangster image and that of ruthless politicians and businessmen. The album's energy is kept high with a large number of guests, such as El-P, Murs, and Abyss, who contribute their voices to this fun and thought-provoking commentary on the commercialism which purveys both music and politics. On the fourth release from Detroit's finest they give you more of what you have come to love. A little bit heavier this time for the most part, but with enough of that Jack White softness to keep it tender when it's needed. One of the treats on this much-anticipated release is the lead vocal debut of Jack's sister, Meg. She gets away from the drums momentarily to deliver a charming vocal that is both a bit seductive and a bit innocently unsure. Throw in a kick-ass cover of the Bacharach classic "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and a loose sing along with Meg and Holly Golightly (Of Thee Headcoats fame) joining Jack around the campfire, and you get more than you have paid for. Not too many surprises up their sleeves, but it will keep you enthralled and nodding your head for quite awhile. Not too sure about the squirrel though. [TangLiWheebs] Squirrel? What are you talking about? My take on this album is that you'll like it if you like the other White Stripes stuff. My husband and I recently married and moved in together. We're having many disagreements over household chores and projects. I'm tidy and organized. He is...not. I've owned a house for eight years - he's always rented. I'm proud of my house, and feel it's a reflection of myself. He does not seem to appreciate what goes into maintaining it. I do the lion's share of housework, and I resent this. He says I do it because I want to. He thinks I'm a freak for getting up every Saturday to clean. The weekend, to him, is strictly for recreation. He says he'd help me if I clean during the week (I'm not convinced that's true). I'm too tired after work. Plus, I like cleaning on Saturdays. He says I'm too regimented. I feel I'm simply organized, and not a procrastinator. Since we don't plan on having children, I think we should be able to maintain a respectable household. Am I being too rigid?

The Dirt Devil So, your married life looks like that scene from "2001" with the hairy ape creatures freaking out around the big, black monolith, except that your horrified husband is staring up at a mop like it's some alien artifact. Before you tied the knot, did you notice a tendency in your then fiancé to tap dance around the house dusting the mini-blinds? To call in sick so he could stay home stenciling angels on the baseboards? To yell another woman's name in his sleep?

More than likely, this is a man who was, at one time, eligible for Federal disaster recovery matching funds to clean his apartment. A man who was unlikely to experience a change of sheets unless somebody repossessed his bed. A man whose definition of a "window treatment" was limited to "open" or "painted shut."

Now, maybe your hub's life never got quite that sty-like. Still, if you expect him to whir into a Saturday morning cleaning frenzy just because you do - to throw on an apron and a do-rag, shine around the bowl with glee, then re-slipcover the entire house in chintz - you've been sniffing too much Pine-Sol. The guy isn't going to clean. Not now, not on Saturday, not during the week, not ever. That said, he might make cleaning-type motions, not because he actually cares whether the house is clean, but because he cares about pleasing his clean-freak wife.

There's nothing wrong with being a cleanfreak - providing you don't take a broom to the untidy, disorganized, former lifelong renter you married. Come on - you knew what you were getting into. You saw how he lived. You heard what he said at the wedding: "I do," not "I do windows, then I steam-clean the rugs."

Maybe people with such different living styles would do better at staying together if they lived apart - next door to each other, or just down the block. Maybe you'll never be happy until you have a man who shares your lust to dust and your jones to wipe down the wainscoting and wash behind the refrigerator. There's a name for this man: "maid" or "cleaning person." (His rates are a steal compared to a man called "divorce lawyer.") Hiring him should eliminate not only the residues of daily living, but the inevitable accumulation of resentment from your Saturday morning temptation to wake your husband by shouting into a police bullhorn, "If you can't do the time, don't do the grime!"
