LettersTotheEditor Worried about the American Dream One concept lies at the core of issues that make me worry about the fate of human kind. It is responsible for our need to go to war over resources. This problem is causing loss of our rainforests and species diversity. It’s responsible for the increasingly frenetic pace of life and over-flowing landfills.

This concept is generally labeled “Over Consumption” but the words Progress, Greed, and Affluence also apply. A desire to succeed at life drives us to jump on the treadmill and remain there until we retire. The media leads us to believe that more is better and that we owe it to ourselves to “have it our way” and “just do it.”

Americans are at the top of the heap when it comes to using the earth’s resources. It has been estimated that Americans consume over 25% of the earth’s resources while representing only 5% of the earth’s population. No wonder we are at war!

I see a direct correlation between happiness and simplicity. Do yourselves and the earth a favor - slow down, stop chasing money and the goods we buy with it.

If we don’t buy it, they won’t make it. The resources won’t be extracted from the earth or fought over, the manufacturing plants won’t add to pollution and the product won’t ultimately end up in the landfill.

Parsons Preaches Responsible Planning, Self-sufficiency, ­Economic Diversification Mayoral Candidate Says County Needs New Leadership Not Tied to Big Money

Mayoral candidate Rob Parsons says he is not affiliated with any political party, which is fine since the mayor’s job will be a non-partisan position for the first time.

But the two front runners, county council member Alan Arakawa, and current mayor James “Kimo” Apana, are connected to the Republican (Arakawa) and Demo­ cratic (Apana) parties.

They will presumably benefit from their parties’ organization and volunteers.

Parsons, 49, says he isn’t worried about that, as he thinks voters are fed up with the inability of the political parties to effectively deal with Maui’s substantial growth.

COMEDY OR TRAJEDY? The LPGA – that would be the Ladies Professional Golf Association – held a powwow recently to try and come up with ways to increase their exposure and popularity. Featured speakers at the powwow were hair stylists, fashion magazine editors, and clothes designers. Hmmm, I wonder where they think their biggest problem lies?

Now, I kind of have a problem with this.

I watch, and play, a lot of golf and I agree with the LPGA gurus that the appeal of their tour is not very promising. Every single one of these women is extremely talented but their ratings just don’t match up. However, it’s not going to be solved by changing hairstyles and shortening the lengths of their skirts, both of which were used as legitimate ideas for improvement. The fact is, golf is not that exciting a sport to watch, even with Tiger Woods playing. Add to its dull pace the fact that women don’t hit it as far or shoot scores as low as the men and you don’t exactly have a recipe that’s going to light the television viewing world on fire.

The Senior PGA isn’t nearly as popular as the regular PGA, but you don’t see the old guys discussing putting Rogaine and Viagra in the water coolers on every hole.

Golf is a very traditional sport, and if the powers that be at the LPGA think all they have to do to increase their presence is sleaze it up, they’re degrading the sport, they’re degrading the women who play it, and they’re degrading men. Granted, we are mindless dogs when it comes to certain things, but shorter skirts isn’t always the answer.

And this brings me to another problem: How can women complain about sexual harassment and sexual discrimination when their blatant objectification is being openly considered? I’m all for equality whether it’s based on gender or race, but don’t lay down in the road and then complain about being run over. What’s next, the women of the

Golf is an incredible game that requires an extraordinary amount of focus and if the LPGA asks its players to divert some of that focus away from their game and towards their sexual marketing skills, their games are going to suffer and there isn’t a skirt short enough to get you into the winner’s circle after you shoot 80.

CNN = Big Brother?

How many times have you read a story in the newspaper or heard it on TV and the reporter cites “unnamed sources familiar with the situation?” These unnamed sources could be anybody – literally – because without the need to name their sources, there’s no way to check the validity of the reporter’s story. In some cases, politicians have launched internal investigations in order to reveal the leaks, especially in the last year with regards to leaked news about the Bush administrations world-wide actions against terrorism. The logical source of the leaks is a hesitant staffer, someone who thinks the administration is going a little too far too fast, and it is their personal responsibility to keep an eye on things, even if that means leaking news of impending operations to the media to raise public outcry. In recent weeks, the FBI has even asked some congressional aides to submit to lie detector tests in order to root out the mole. But what if the leaks are not the doings of some disgruntled staffer but rather the news organization itself? What if – and this wouldn’t be that hard to do – CNN, or the Washington Post or the NY Times, hired an ex-FBI or CIA guy with access to congressional offices to plant a few listening devices here and there? News editors could sit at their own desks and have the stories come to them. Attribute a couple quotes to “unnamed sources familiar with the situation” and nobody would know the difference. Kind of makes you wonder.

LEAD STORIES A Fortune magazine-commissioned study reported in August that officers and directors of the 1,035 companies that have fallen the most from their recent bullmarket peaks cashed in $66 billion worth of stock before the crash, at a time when those companies’ non-insiders (and in many cases, employees) were suffering devastating investment losses. Among the “shrewdest” executives were those from AOL-Time Warner ($1.79 billion), Enron ($994 million) and Charles Schwab ($951 million).

One proposed remedy for the sexual frustration of Iranian men who avoid ­marriage because of financial cost is to ­permit temporary, Islam-endorsed “marriages” with prostitutes inside designated brothels.

About 300,000 prostitutes are active in Iran, and the number is rising, as is the typical cost of marriage and the “corrupt” influence of Western society on Muslim youth. Those ­circumstances have caused at least one prominent cleric to back the idea, according to an August Reuters dispatch.

Responding to his latest call-up for jury duty, habitual San Antonio jury-slacker David Williamson sent the federal judge a serious bill for $16,800 because the court had advised Williamson to be ready to serve at any time during August (21 business days, 8 hours a day, at Williamson’s consultant’s rate of $100 an hour).

Williamson also wrote that if the judge did not pay by Aug. 31, interest would accrue at 2 percent a month, and that if the judge would like to discuss the matter, he should call Williamson for an appointment.

(A few days later, Judge John H. Wood Jr. ordered Williamson to his courtroom for a ­contempt hearing, the result of which was pending at press time.)

A female suspect being questioned by police managed to fatally shoot an officer who had permitted her a bathroom break, using a gun the woman had probably ­concealed between her buttocks (Minneapolis). An orthopedic surgeon’s license was suspended after he, in midoperation, allegedly left the OR for 35 minutes to run to his bank and deposit a check before returning to finish up (successfully) (Cambridge, Mass.). An ex-cop awaiting trial for molesting one stepdaughter dropped dead of an aneurysm in an X-rated peep-show booth while in a compromising position with his other stepdaughter (El Paso, Texas). A woman who two years ­earlier had a house built on the edge of a golf course fairway filed a lawsuit against the course because balls keep landing in her yard (Ossipee, N.H.).

Eh Brah . . . to car rental agencies who surreptitiously respond to questions about when to return the car you rent. Ask a direct question and you get several variations on the theme depending on who answers the phone. If you want the car back by a certain hour... just say so. Don’t wait until we return it late in the day to inform us that we now have to pay for an extra day. That specific information should be on the rental agreement in large bold type (not in the wee small print...that you’re certain nobody reads because it doesn’t make any sense anyway.) When you rent a movie you know up front what day AND time it should be returned...perhaps you could learn something from video rentals and their systems. disgruntled car renter

News continued from page 4 campaign. Without being negative about any other candidates, we have situations, issues that are so critical that they need to be brought to the attention of the voters.

MTW: What do you say to people who wonder if you are opposed to all growth. Are there any developments that you like?

RP: I’m pro responsible growth. So much of the planning over the past two decades has not been responsible with respect to the impacts on our quality of life.

MTW: Can you give an example?

RP: Well, we’re looking at some requests for rezoning and approvals for two huge South Maui projects that we have neither the roadway capacity nor the freshwater capacity to support. So we continue to permit even though our infrastructure is beyond the point of stress and strain.

And, rather than building what’s needed most, that’s affordable housing, we continue to build luxury housing for people who don’t live here.

MTW: So there haven’t been any projects or developments that have come up that you could support in recent years? What about the Iao Parkside homes near Wailuku?

RP: You mean the Stanford Carr ones? Well, I looked at those plans and decided not to oppose it. I felt that, you know, we do have to pick our battles so we don’t lead other people to believe we’re always opposing things.

But groups like Maui Tomorrow and the Sierra Club and the community associations are perceived as being opposed to all growth because there are so many examples of poorly planned projects being brought forth to the community that could have been avoided by community based planning - by involving the community at a much earlier level for input.

I’ll give you my three keys for smart growth.

One is that the community is involved as early as possible. So community based planning. Then a landowner or developer is really responding to the needs and wishes of that community. Either a small community or the greater community of Maui, rather than proposing something they think is in the communities’ best interest or proposing something that will bring them the highest return. That is an essential element of smart growth.

Secondly, it is essential that we retain our sense of place. There are a lot of cookie cutter subdivisions that really don’t speak anything of Maui or Hawaii. They just look like a subdivision that could be anywhere.

Dairy Road is an obvious example. It’s lost its sense of place. And this is the corridor we bring everyone through when they first come to the island. The same kind of thing they just left behind in southern California.

There are examples of where we retained our sense of place. Places like Makawao Town, Paia Town. Particularly our small towns. Even the Kihei community is getting together with more plan and vision of how to retrofit all the bad planning that happened there and try and fold it into something that feels more like community.

The third element of smart or responsible growth is self-sufficiency. Over 90 percent of

both energy and food is imported. Hundreds of millions of dollars goes off the island each year for petroleum.

MTW: Is your base diverse enough to win?

Do you have a broad enough ethnic mix?

RP: We’ll find out September 22. It feels like there is a lot more discontent with big money politics, on the national level as well as locally.

It is really up to the voters to use their voice this time around. We are trying to reach out to people that are so disenchanted with the system that they don’t even vote. We’’re trying to let them know this is a year we have good candidates and can really make a difference.

MTW: Is there a danger of being too closely affiliated with Maui Tomorrow?

RP: I’m proud to be associated with Maui Tomorrow. They have a long list of accomplishments for this community, beginning with saving Big Beach and Little Beach at Makena for a state park.

They’ve sometimes been labeled as controversial because they’ve threatened the traditional ties to the well connected to swift permitting.

MTW: Why would you be better than Apana?

RP: I see the role of mayor as being the leader of a winning team. I believe that each of his department head hasn’t stepped up to the mandate of what they really ought to have been doing.

I won’t go through them one by one but, the water director, you never get a straight answer about how much water we really have.

Housing and Human concerns, I think the crystal methamphetamine or batu problem is still a huge concern that this administration hasn’t begun to deal with.

As far as housing, this administration has taken the stance that it’s not the county’s role to provide affordable housing. The Planning Department has been a disaster and will end up costing the county millions of dollars to litigate situations like the Lime Kiln in Paia and the Cameron House.

We need a whole new slate of leaders in the administration, of department heads who are not tied to big money interests.

MTW: Why would you make a better mayor than Arakawa?

RP: You know, there are two practiced politicians running that see things from a politician’s point of view, from inside a system they already work in. I’m already outside the box. I don’t have to look outside the box, I’m already there.

I see the role of mayor as being the highest elected public servant. You don’t view it as a political post. It’s public service at its highest.

MTW: Give me your last pitch. Why should you be mayor?

RP: We haven’t got another four years at the pace we’re going. We’re continuing to hear from our visitors that we’re over-building and our local families are working harder, working more jobs, and still not making ends meet.

Or finding ways that their keiki can find a job here, can find a home here. We’ve got to implement leadership with a new vision of what’s ­possible.

I recently had the privilege to visit a visit a Japanese dojo and hold an authentic $10,000 Samurai sword in my hands. It was an experience that I will treasure forever. It changed me. As I held it I felt the weight of Japanese dynasties stretching back through hundreds of years of turmoil, the fine balance and control necessary to persevere through troubled times, and the rare beauty of an idea forged into brilliant perfection.

The sword belongs to Robert W. Montgomery, the director of Komei Juku Beikoku Honbu. His Japanese name is Sekiguchi Kenshin, given to him in 1993 by his sensei Sekiguchi Komei along with the directive to perpetuate the philosophy and technical skills of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iai Jutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship). He has done this on Maui by practicing and teaching on a daily basis at the dojo he built in his home in Makawao and at the Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai in Wailuku. He now invites the public to attend a series of free workshops and demonstrations given by Sekiguchi Komei Sensei and Shimizu Nobuko Sensei, 8th Dan, Jiki Shinkage Ryu, Naginata Jutsu starting August 30th and continuing through September 6th.

Bob first became interested in Japanese martial arts in 1964 when Judo was admitted into the Olympic Games in Tokyo. He then studied Judo and Jujutsu before becoming fascinated with the making, use and judging of antique Japanese weapons, the sword in particular. On his subsequent travels to Japan he continued his studies of sword culture and visited the forges of famous artisans and polishers of swords. It was only natural for him to follow his passion by studying the way of the sword through Sekiguchi Komei, 21st Grandmaster of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iai Jutsu.

“Why should a person living in this modern age study an ancient martial art like Iai Jutsu?” I asked Bob while exploring his peaceful in-house dojo.

He said, “Training in Sekiguchi Sensei’s style of Iai prepares the student to deal more effectively with life. The discipline and self-sacrifice in Iai Jutsu are the same needed to succeed in personal relationships. Human relationships grow from having higher expectations of your self than of others. When a student strives for high personal performance he becomes more helpful and useful to others. When he learns to freely give and share his abilities he begins to contribute to the welfare of others.”

I absorbed this while studying five pictures mounted high on the wall above the mirrored doors enclosing the dojo. There was a small wooden altar above the pictures with intricate scrollwork and fresh flowers.

“That is the lineage of Grandmasters,” Bob said. He pointed to the photo on the right, “That is Sekiguchi Komei. To his left are Onoue Masamitsu, then Kono Kanemitsu, Yamauchi Toyotake and Oei Masamichi.”

I asked why the fourth picture was taken at such an early age. Yamauchi Sensei looked to be in his early twenties while the others were captured in their later years.

“He was killed in World War II,” Bob replied.

It shouldn’t surprise me that a young man following the philosophy of the sword should die fighting for his country. Iai Jutsu is based on battlefield strategies and fighting techniques used by the ancient Samurai, or warrior class. As conflicts moved from the battlefield to the political and urban arenas Iai Jutsu adapted by

focusing on quickly drawing the sword and striking the first defensive blow in order to counter surprise attacks. This requires alertness, perception, a calm spirit and focused concentration so that one instantly responds to and blends with the offensive movements of an opponent. These Samurai wielded their ideals as well as their swords to carve a new path for Japanese political and cultural structure.

Their legacy lives to this day.

Several styles of Japanese swordsmanship have survived over the centuries. One of the oldest and better documented styles in Japan today is Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iai Jutsu. This art has been passed down faithfully from the founder, Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu (15461621), through each Grandmaster to the current 21st Grandmaster Sekiguchi Komei. During this time the study of the sword has evolved by changing its emphasis from learning skills for taking life to learning skills for building and living a life that has value to others.

“Today’s Iai Jutsu training emphasizes developing selfesteem, accepting life’s responsibilities, creating a peaceful mind and spirit while helping to preserve a part of Japanese culture,” Bob says.

Sekiguchi Komei has embraced these values by spending the last twenty years of his life working full time to spread Iai Jutsu throughout the world. He has traveled to over fifty countries and this marks his fifth return to Maui.

He serves as President of the International Association of Iaido and President of the Japanese Association of Classical Martial Art Iaido as well as sitting on the Board of Directors of the Nihon Budokan, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the Japanese martial arts.

He will be accompanied to Maui this year by Shimizu Nobuko Sensei, 8th Dan, Jiki Shinkage Ryu, Naginata Jutsu. Shimizu Sensei has a broad interest in classical Japanese culture. She studies and practices the tea ceremony and calligraphy as well as painting and music while teaching at a college in Saitama, just outside of Tokyo. She practices Iai Jutsu and Kyudo (Japanese Bow) as well as Naginata Jutsu.

The naginata, known as the reaping sword, is a spear with a curved blade used for cutting and thrusting. The blade is sharpened on one edge and can be as short as 12 inches and as long as 3 feet. It is mounted on an oval shaft from 6 to 9 feet in length with a metal pommel on the end which is also used in a thrusting and striking manner. This weapon has been in use since the 7th century and is ideal for women because of its long reach and the ease of its reaping cut.

As relatively peaceful times came to Japan during the Edo period the naginata was no longer viewed as a battlefield weapon but as a weapon for the defense of the home.

Samurai women were expected to be skilled in its use by the age of eighteen. It had achieved such cultural significance that a woman’s naginata went with her when she joined her new family in marriage.

It’s easy to appreciate the wonder and symbolism of the sword and the naginata while in the presence of Bob, whose kindness and wisdom permeate the bare wood floors and

mirrored walls of the dojo. But how does this reach beyond his tiny refuge? How can it affect the chaotic, strife-ridden world around us?

The answer lies in the only change you truly have control over: change in yourself. Sekiguchi Komei says, “You just need to know one thing, which is to truly find out about yourself.” By constantly challenging yourself to improve, to do better than you think you can, you enrich your life as well as those around you.

This doctrine is implicit in Iai Jutsu. Students are given swords that are longer and thicker than were classically used. This challenges them to reach more deeply within themselves to find the strength and the will to continue, which in turn fosters the true realization of the self with all of its hidden strengths and weaknesses.

Bob admits that “there are many ways to learn these things. I just like Iai Jutsu.” I can tell by the way he talks that he has a sincere love for the subject. He constantly gives his time and energy to the sharing of the philosophy and technical skills of Iai Jutsu by inviting any student into his dojo and teaching them free of charge. He says that this is a lifelong experience, not a business.

The experience of meeting Sekiguchi Komei and Shimizu Nobuko is also free. They will perform a demonstration on Sunday, September 1st at 6:00 PM as a part of the Great Autumn festival at the Maui Jinja at 472 Lipo Street in Wailuku. They will demonstrate a variety of forms or katas as well as other forms of practice between an attacker and a defender. Authentic Japanese swords will be used to demonstrate cutting techniques through rolled and soaked Tatami mats, which simulate the density of the human body. A closing demonstration will also be performed on Friday, September 6th at 6:30 PM at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku. There will be time following the demonstrations to ask questions Daily workshops will be given on August 30th and 31st as well as September 2nd through the 5th at the Maui Okinawa Cultural Center in Wailuku. These are slated to run from 9 to 12 AM, 1 to 4 PM and 6 to 9 PM each day, but Bob says to call first because Sekiguchi Sensei likes to “go with the flow” and there’s no telling what might happen. Everybody is invited to come and watch and possibly even participate in these workshops where the members of the Maui Komei Juku will have the opportunity to learn from their distinguished visitors.

As the sun sets I must say my goodbyes to Bob. The waning light imparts a glow to the serene confines of the dojo, a glow that is reflected and amplified by the eyes of Sekiguchi Kenshin, a humble modern day man who exemplifies for me the essence of the Japanese sword.

“I have a high regard and appreciation for the senseis I have had the privilege to study under,” he says. “I enjoy sharing my experiences but I am a student first and look forward to learning from those I meet.”

Good Samaritans at Ukumehame For the love of the ‘aina

The age old play on words ‘good news/bad news’ syndrome has appeared once again in the following episode, and as in some cases, the news turns out to be one and the same.

It involved the recent on again off again water crisis at Ukumehame Park on the southwest shore of Maui. This particular park has ­continuously struggled for years to become an oasis of greenery surrounded by miles of kiawe ­forest. The park is constantly pummeled by the stronger than average winds that blow there.

Each and every year, and more often than not, this results in brown lawns and barely surviving trees, at best. Sadly, some trees, usually known for their hardiness, have actually lost the battle for life and have either fallen over or have to be cut down. In short, the park wasn’t getting any prettier, that is until lately.

through just to get anything done, a heroic maneuver in itself. To make matters worse for this struggling oasis, Ukumehame is very low, perhaps at the bottom, of the priority list, far below the golf courses and various other tourist havens that must remain in pristine condition. Who cares if Ukumehame doesn’t even have luas (restrooms) and shower facilities while cattle die of thirst all over the island?

We do! There is a cast of characters (lightly put) that frequent Ukumehame on a regular basis mainly for its remoteness and nonmainstream popularity, and occasional good surf that pops up now and then. Surf or not, the Sunday barbeques are a piece of work by themselves. It gives all the knuckleheads, myself included, an excuse to congregate in an area devoid of the ‘somebodys’ which is a rare gift. And we care.

If one should notice lately, the trees at Ukumehame are coming back around, the grass is greener, new plants are being donated, and even the dreaded kiawe trees/thorns are being cleared away. The on again off again sprinkler system is now in working condition but that consistency factor is always threatened. We keep an eye on the color of the grass which indicates whether they are working or not. However, when it does inevitably break down, we simply load up a few gallons of water along with the usual beach amenities to do what we can to keep the park alive until the department of water supply is able to correct the problem.

In other words, we work together. This is done not for a pat on the back, a badge, or to raise any other accolades for that matter. It is simply done for the love of the ‘aina. I truly wish this eccentric and unusual behavior was as contagious all over Maui as it is at Ukumehame.

The good news is there is some. The bad news is there is not enough. The Answer? Bust a move.

North Shore Paddle 2002 Surfers & Paddleboarders Battle for Speed If you thought the paddle out to Kanaha was long, you obviously haven’t heard about the North Shore Paddle. This contest, sponsored by Hana Highway Surf and Maui Babe, tested the fitness levels of the participants in a grueling paddle from Ho’okipa Beach Park to Paia Bay, for the surfboard division, and from Ho’okipa Beach Park to Maliko to Paia Bay, for the Paddle Board Division. This past Sunday marked the Fourth Annual North Shore Paddle, of which only the second year with the paddleboard division. The hefty prize of $500 for the first place overall surfboard finisher was a great incentive for the record breaking 71 competitors, ranging in age from 9 to 75 years old. There were

and Paia Bay created a nice setting for celebrations and a chill environment with good music and grinds, for all competitors to enjoy with their contest shirts.

Ho’okipa Beach Park was the starting point for the North Shore Paddle 2002. The sun was out and it was a classic north shore morning. The conditions were nice, with small surf and lighter than normal trades. Most of the competitors were waiting outside pavilions for the commencement of the race when the horn ­signaled to begin promptly at 11am. Shortly afterwards, most of Ho’okipa headed for Paia Bay. There was a food table ready to serve the soon to be arriving, probably ravished and dehydrated competitors. After only 26 minutes and 37 seconds, Buzzy Kerbox reached Paia Bay claiming the first place overall surfboard paddler. Shortly afterwards, Kiva Rivers arrives with 28 minutes and 8 seconds to win the Men 19-44 division, Aka Pai arrived 8 ­seconds later to win the Men 18 & under ­division. Marlene Tam took the Open Women’s division with a time of 33 minutes even. For the 200 lb and over division, Kirk Snyder took it with 35 minutes and 27 ­seconds. Dave Kalama charged in and took the 1st in the paddleboard division with 45 minutes and 4 seconds.

The paddleboard division was a recent addition to the contest, being introduced for the first time on Maui last year. Paddleboard racing has been done in Hawaii for years;

many life saving personnel, surfers and canoe paddlers use it as a great way to stay in shape and gain further knowledge of the ocean.

Paddleboards are stock 12 feet long and are hollowed out for more speed.

Leilani’s Beachside Grill Oceanfront dining at its finest

Having lunch right off of the beach is the best way to enjoy a great meal, plus enjoy a great view of Lana’i and Moloka’i. With a light breeze in the air, I sat down with my roommate at an umbrella-covered table at Leilani’s Beachside Grill, at the Whaler’s Village in Ka’anapali.

Our server Amber greeted us with not much enthusiasm, but that didn’t discourage us from looking over the menu with great care.

An appetizer seemed appropriate, along with a salad, and an entrée. Amber took our order, but ­didn’t bring out any of our food; we had a food runner bring out each plate.

Chris, our food server, brought us deep-fried calamari strips and a shrimp cocktail. The calamari was the best calamari that I have ever had in my life. It didn’t have big chunks of batter on it like most calamari. It was breaded with a side of cocktail sauce. The shrimp cocktail contained six jumbo shrimps. Each bite was a taste of seafood Heaven.

Our entrees were carried to our table with a smile. A grilled chicken salad was accompanied by vegetables, parmesan cheese and an Italian vinaigrette dressing. The chicken was moist and the greens were fresh. A Hawaiian local plate seem to fit the atmosphere. Two scoops of rice, one scoop of macaroni salad, and Paniolo

sirloin steak were devoured in nothing flat.

The food was so good that it was hard for me to decide which dish to bite into.

Just when I thought I couldn’t go on, Chris brought out a Hula Pie. A mountain of vanilla ice cream with a cookie crust was topped with chocolate sauce and macadamia nuts. The Hula Pie was incredible. No, it was amazing. I think I had a smile on my face the entire time I ate the pie.

Leilani’s Beachside Grill was one of the best lunches that I have had in awhile. The food was terrific, but the service was different from any other restaurant that I have been to. Instead of a server bringing out the food and checking on the status of my experience, the food runner did. It seemed our server didn’t think we were the type of people who would leave a good tip. My roommate and I are, in fact, very good tippers because we both have had jobs in the food industry.

If you want a great meal, try Leilani’s Beachside Grill. Lunch is served from 11am to 5pm. From 5pm to 10pm, the restaurant upstairs opens for dinner. Hopefully, when you go in, you will get a more pleasant server than what my roommate and I had. No matter what, your taste buds will go wild once you take one bite of their food.

Motown Legends The Commodores at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater — Friday, September 6 Motown legends The Commodores are bringing their classic combination of soul, funk, pop and R&B to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater stage September 6. For more than 30 years, The Commodores have remained a force in the music industry with such hits as “Easy”, “Three Times A Lady”, “Sail On” and “Still”. As only The Commodores can, the group will rekindle moments of musical enchantment with hit after hit after hit, from the party anthem “Brick House” to the Grammy Award-winning “Night­ shift” and more.

Formed in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1967, when the original members met as freshmen at Tuskegee Institute, The Commodores first gained a national following after opening for the Jackson 5. After signing to the Motown record label, the group became one of the most commercially successful African-American groups of the late ’70s, thanks to a slew of hit romantic ballads.

The Commodores first big hit was an instrumental called “Machine Gun”, and they followed with 22 gold records, three triple platinum, two double platinum and six platinum albums. While with the Motown label, this prolific group sold more than 60 million records for Motown.

In the early 1980s, Lionel Richie left the group to pursue a solo career. The

The Gypsy Spirit Dance Company troupe is made up of Maui’s premier cabaret belly dancers. Boxploitation Walter Hill Throws Punches To The In Crowd Undisputed —

...

Just as some movies seem to have been designed for airline passengers to calmly digest while waiting to land (“Erin Brockovich” for example), director Walter Hill’s mano y mano prison boxing drama “Undisputed” seems tailored to soothe inmates biding their time behind bars.

Ving Rhames (“Bringing Out The Dead”) plays Iceman Chambers, a Mike Tyson inspired boxing champion found guilty of rape and sentenced to Sweetwater, a maximum-security prison where Monroe Hutchen (Wesley Snipes - “Blade”) reigns as the prison’s undefeated boxing champ.

With precise use of black and white archive boxing footage and tight close-up tabloid television styled interviews, Hill holds the audience in their subjective seat. Tiny windows, steel bars and various partitions make up the film’s claustrophobic image system.

The movie is eloquently funny in its use of slang wit and explosive in its sudden eruptions of violence from Chambers, who views himself as king of all he surveys.

“Undisputed” is a perfectly realized update on the Blaxploita­tion genre with more realistic heroes and­­villains than those ’70s films and with a much tighter narrative perimeter.

Although Snipes’ character Monroe is the protagonist of the story, much of the movie focuses on Chamber’s self-possessed bad ass approach to dealing with all situations. When a caustic reporter asks the Iceman about his future as an athlete, Chambers responds I’m not an athlete - I’m a gladiator.

end when Chambers rightfully explodes at the interviewer’s couched questions about his rape conviction. The Iceman lays down his own law upon arriving at Sweetwater by cold-bloodedly beating the tar out of any inmate or gang who offends him. It’s the way most men would like to be able handle themselves in a prison environment, but by the climax of the story Chambers’ entitlement by intimidation is proven to be a selfdefeating method of attack.

Monroe Hutchen is a former ranked heavyweight boxer doing a life sentence for beating a man to death after catching him in bed with his girlfriend. He’s a picture of self-discipline, spending time in solitary confinement, after a run-in with Chambers, by building a pagoda made from toothpicks when he isn’t maintaining his solid physique. Fellow inmate Mendy Ripstein, a former mobster and boxing connoisseur (played with gusto and grit by Peter Falk - “The Brinks Job”) enhances the yin and yang dichotomy between the two methodically different fighters.

“Undisputed” is Walter Hill’s first film since the disastrous “Supernova” (2000), a movie he removed his name from due to studio conflicts over the final product. From the same director who helmed such aggressive cinema standards as “Hard Times” (1975), “Last Man Standing” (1988) and “Johnny Handsome” (1995), “Undisputed” is a chamber piece of furious action and bell-ringing dialogue. Hill co-wrote the script with

Ving Rhames & Wesley Snipes in Undisputed David Giler, and there isn’t a second of squandered screen time. The storyline is extremely tight, and the state-of-the-art prison facility where the action takes place serves as a sterile social backdrop for men who communicate in ­heavily coded shorthand. The boxers ­clearly grasp their place as “fighters” just as the other inmates approve their own positions as ­“scumbags.”

Nevertheless pride and respect are values that Hill demonstrates as coming from within the individual, with personal dignity as a prize that only a few of the inmates will achieve. The fact that Hill executes this thematic heavy-lifting with off-handed jibes of humor makes the

movie endearingly funny instead of preachy.

Walter Hill is a much-overlooked director who, like Sam Peckinpah, specializes in male temperament fueled by testosterone and experience. When Iceman Chambers taunts Monroe’s self-promoting manager Ratbag to land a punch on him for free, everyone knows that there’s an unwritten clause allowing Chambers to return the blow. But knowing that the punch is coming doesn’t lessen the effect of the punch.

“Undisputed” has the energy and effect of everything pro boxing offers but seldom delivers: unhindered entertainment.

University of Hawaii Center Maui is pleased to announce that the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, College of Education will be offering two statewide programs. The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education (PBSCE) and the Master of Education in Special Education (Med SPED) programs are expected to start in Fall 2003.

Whirl Interrupted A month ago, my boss introduced me to his neighbor, an older, divorced man who owns a helicopter company. He’s a nice guy, and because he’s looking to get into a relationship, I hooked him up with my hairdresser. No sparks flew between them, but he’s become a regular client of hers. To thank me, he offered to buy me lunch.

Even better, he offered me a free ride on one of his helicopters! I’m supposed to call when I have a free morning, and if there’s an open seat, he’ll tell the pilot to expect me. (He doesn’t plan on accompanying me; nor will he be flying the thing.) I was looking forward to seeing the city from the sky for free (how cool would that be!) but when I told my boyfriend, he flipped his pancakes. Although I made it clear I’m not romantically interested in the helicopter man, he feels threatened and doesn’t want me lunching or flying. Lunch, smunch, that’s no biggie. But neither my boyfriend nor I have an extra couple hundred bucks lying around to put toward whirling around the sky for an hour. Should I pass up this rare opportunity just to allay my boyfriend’s fears that I will have mad sex, fall in love and dump him for the ­helicopter man?

For your boyfriend, at least, there’s a very fuzzy line between mate and inmate; a sign, not that he loves you, but that he has a crushing need to be loved.

Somebody who loves you wants your life to be as big, fat, and exciting as possible —even if it means that you end up living it out in somebody else’s helicopter. Just be glad that your boyfriend hasn’t tried to take the captive audience concept to its logical conclusion — confining you to a windowless 8 by 10 cell with a slot in the door so he can slide you your bowl of gruel.

That kind of living arrangement does have its benefits. He’d feel secure that he’d get to forever with you (forever being roughly how long it takes to tunnel to freedom with a Styrofoam cup and a bent teaspoon). As for you — you could learn important skills, like how to cut your meat with a sharpened comb. You might even get to don an orange jumpsuit and go out and break rocks, or get into the kind of handiwork that’s seen by thousands of motorists. And who knows — if you behave yourself, there might even be a Tiffany’s box in your future — your very own electronic engagement anklet!

If, however, Capitivity By Tiffany’s isn’t what saws your bars, you can again ­reassure your boyfriend...just as you can spit on a forest fire or apply a single sheet of Bounty to the Eastern European flood cleanup. The guy probably has the selfimage of a stale bread crumb, and he’s the only one who can change that. You
