A CYNICAL POLITICAL WAR George Bush plans to declare war on Iraq in September or October, and says Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Actually, the UN and the inspector in charge of investigating such weapons say they have been ­eradicated.

The real reason Bush is doing it is to bump up so-called “patriotism”, and give the Republicans a better chance in the November elections. Another major benefit will be to get the media to focus on war instead of Bush and Cheney’s financial dealings and the cesspool on Wall Street.

Of course they hope to “minimize” American deaths, and who cares anyway how many Iraqi civilians die? And who cares how many more neutrals will decide America is a totally immoral bully run by a greedy power elite?

As someone who lived through “the good war”, and knows how idealistic and unselfish we were in the post-war years (the Marshall plan), this corrupt and cynical war makes me want to vomit.

Finally, a voice is heard! How happy am I that there is finally a forum for our grievances and/or gratitudes! How satisfying it is to let not the voice of reason but the voice of truth and justice ring out! Hurrah for ‘Eh Brah’!!

Being in the service industry, I frequently come across other servers who do not live up to the high standards I uphold daily, as I work hard at giving excellent service. It is more than frustrating to not receive the respect I feel I deserve, and even more maddening to be told (as a customer) that I (?!) am wrong, or that it is MY fault something has not gone right!

Hopefully, with this new column addition to MauiTime, people everywhere will be more conscious (or at least, more vocal!) about how we deal with each other on a daily basis. Not that it isn’t super cool to hear all the trashtalking, too!

Maui Lowest Voter turnout in State Hawaii Lowest in Nation Maui County had the lowest voter turnout in the state in both the primary and general elections in 2000. According to the state Office of Elections, only 30.8 percent of registered voters turned out for the primary and 54.1 percent turned out for the general.

That compares to the 43 percent turnout for the primary election in Kauai, Hawaii and Honolulu counties. Kauai had the highest turnout in the general election, at 64.1 percent, followed by the Big Island at 60.9 and Honolulu at 58 percent.

Hawaii lowest voter turnout in nation in 2000 Hawaii had the lowest voter turnout in the nation for the 2000 elections, according to the non-partisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate. In Hawaii, only 41 percent of the voting age population cast ballots.

Nationally, 47 percent of the voting age population cast ballots in the 2000 election, compared to 60 percent who voted in Mexico the same year, according to the Committee.

Arizona (42 percent), Texas (43 percent), Nevada (43 percent) and Georgia (43 percent) joined Hawaii as the five lowest turnout states. Minnesota had the highest turnout, at 68.8 percent.

The voting age population is different from the number of registered voters. In Hawaii, 58.3 percent of the registered ­voters cast ballots in the 2000 general ­election, according to the state Office of Elections.

Six political parties for this election Six political parties are fielding candidates for this year’s elections. In addition to the Democratic and Republican parties, the Natural Law Party, the Hawaii Green Party, the Libertarian Party and the Free Energy Party will have candidates for a variety of offices.

This will be the first year for the Free Energy Party, which supports nuclear energy.

r­ esidency seat where you live. Each election, many ballots come in with only one County Council vote because people apparently don’t understand they should vote for all nine ­positions, which are for two-year terms.

This year only freshman council member Bob Carroll of the East Maui residency district will run unopposed. All other races are ­contested.

In West Maui, it is James “Kimo” Falconer versus incumbent Jo Anne Johnson, a first term council member. Brandish V. Johnson will take on incumbent Charmaine Tavares for the UpCountry seat and another first term council member, Mike Molina, will be opposed

by Lance Holter for the Makawao-Paia-Haiku seat.

Council members in two person races will be elected in the general election Nov. 5.

For races with more than two candidates, all ­candidates will appear on the ballot in the September 21 primary, with the top two vote getters advancing to the general election.

Lanai is also a two-person race, with ­challenger Georgina Kaui Kawamura taking on second generation council member Riki Hokama.

The Molokai seat will have the most candidates, with five people seeking the position held since 1986 by the late Pat Kawano.

Danny Mateo was appointed by the Council to fill out Kawano’s term and will run against Stacy Helm Crivello, Maria Hustace, George R. Kahino, Jr., and Beverly E. Pauole-Moore.

DeGray Vanderbilt also filed to run but has since dropped out of the race.

The Kahului seat currently held by Alan Arakawa, who will run for mayor, will be sought by four candidates — Herman T. Andaya, D. Mele Carroll, Nick Casumpang, Jr. and Joseph Pontanilla.

Four candidates will also run for the the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu seat, including Sunny Gutierrez, Natalie “Tasha” Kama, Mark Smith and incumbent Dain Kane.

Three candidates will go after the South Maui seat held by Wayne Nishiki. He is seeking reelection against G. Lehua “Mahi” Clubb and Zandra Souza-Amaral.

The race for mayor attracted four candidates, with incumbent James “Kimo” Apana, council member Alan Arakawa, Robert W. Parsons and Bill Riddick seeking election. For the first time, the mayor’s race will be non-­ partisan.

READY OR NOT, HERE WE COME! In case you missed it, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was on TV recently giving a press conference about any possible future plans for the U.S. to invade Iraq. It must have been an important press conference, too, because it was under the headline “FOX NEWS ALERT”. Though come to think of it, everything falls under “ALERT” when you’re at FOX. Anyway, there was Rumsfeld fielding questions about Iraq and that got me thinking; why would the nation’s Secretary of Defense go on TV and tell the world our plans?

A main answer to that question is that recently, Democrats, and even some Republicans, have come out and openly demanded that the President share with them his plans for Iraq. I don’t know about you but it seems logical that if we were going to invade another country, we might not want to go on TV (and yes, Iraq has access to TV also) and outline our plan. But President Bush’s collegues in the House and Senate are a little leery of the President being, well, Presidential, and they want him to expose himself to the public in the hopes that the public has had enough with wars already and will shut him down.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi government is tuning in and getting ready. So much for the element of surprise.

But why is President Bush agreeing to outline his strategy rather than keep quiet in the name of national security? Ironically enough, the Democrats are playing right into Bush’s hands. Bush learned from his father that, while a war can boost your presidential ratings to the moon, the end of the war can bring them right back down.

With the effects of 9/11 starting to fade a little bit, Bush has been rocked with the corporate scandals recently. Instead of riding this wave of stock market scrutiny, the Democrats call for a full accounting of Bush’s Middle East scenario and he’s only too happy to send his Secretary of Defense on TV to discuss another possible war and divert the attention away from the current economic catastrophe. Which goes to show that the last place in the world

If Clinton had figured this out we might have been saved from the Monica Lewisnky scandal years ago. Although, with Clinton’s foreign policy experience, that means Mexico would be in six different pieces right now.

YOU CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL More controversy in that crazy world of golf. First Charles Barkley, he of the ever expanding mouth of illogical reason, condemned the Masters golf tournament for being racist. Now, Augusta National, the host site of the Masters, is coming under fire for not allowing women into its extremely exclusive club. What led to this charge initially was the British Open, played on a site in Scotland that also did not allow women. When Tiger Woods was asked what he thought about these exclusionary practices, he wisely said, “I’m only here to play in the Open Championship. I really have no comment on their policies.” Some members of the media had a field day with that one.

“Tiger refuses to take a stand!” shouted one headline. “One word from Tiger and this whole mess would be resolved,” said another writer. It’s unfortunate that Tiger is expected to make a political or social statement whenever a problem arises within the sport. Tiger Woods may be the world’s top ranked golfer but that does not make him the answer to gender equity problems facing women today. The problem, however, is sure to gain momentum come April when the Masters is to be held once again, but the bottom line is that Augusta National is a private club and they can admit, and exclude, whomever they want. Does that make it morally right? Of course not, but Augusta National is not vying for federal dollars, therefore they are not subjected to federal regulations of equal representation. There are thousands of people, mostly men, who would be denied entrance to this exclusive club, so I guess it’s only a matter of time before we hear from the CAAG (Coaliton for the Advancement of the Average Guy) regarding their exclusion from Augusta National.

The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare Set to Disco at Studio H’Poko’s Summer Production

Twenty-five years ago, a peanut farmer was in The White House, slide rules were faster than calculators and most cities had five television stations. It was a time when the country was still feeling the after effects of the Vietnam War and Watergate. Inflation was up, employment was down and “The Love Boat” ruled the airwaves. It was also the height of the disco craze, featuring white suits, backless dresses and slick moves on the dance floor.

The melody stepped back and the beat took over.

Studio H’Poko, Maui’s upcountry theater company, returns to the era of spinning mirror balls, flashing lights and “Saturday Night Fever” with William Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors”. The Seabury Performance Studio in Makawao has been transformed into the discotheque Club Ephesus, where the play will be set. All are invited to be a part of this theater experience as the line between audience and actors is blurred: you can be part of the show.

“The Comedy of Errors” is Shakespeare’s dizzying play of perpetual confusion featuring not one, but two sets of identical twins. The chaos builds with each mistaken identity: a husband insists he is unmarried, sane men are declared mad and no one’s story matches anyone else’s. Only fortuitous circumstances can rescue the characters from escalating disaster.

Art Manke, Founder and Resident Director of the acclaimed Los Angeles classical theater company A Noise Within, returns to Maui to direct the play. Manke, who staged the dances for “The Moliere Comedies” starring Brian Bedford at The Mark Taper Forum, recently won the prestigious L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for his work with South Coast Repertory’s production of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. Manke has directed seven previous productions on Maui, from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 1992 to “The Tempest” in 1999.

Joining Manke to create this production is a top team of designers from both on and off the island. Brenda Plakans, Resident Designer for Placido Domingo’s Washington Opera at The Kennedy Center, returns for her fifth summer on Maui to design costumes for the show. In addition to her designs for Studio H’Poko and the Maui Academy for the

Performing Arts, Plakans has worked on several television projects and the movies “George of the Jungle” and “Wild, Wild West”. Manke says, “Her schedule takes her all over the world, and we are most fortunate to have this sought after designer available to design for us.”

Additional design team members include locals Bonnie Vaky on lights, always an integral part of any disco experience, Dan Bissler on set design and Todd Van Amburgh on technical direction. The choreographer is the fabulous Andre Morrisette. The members of this crew have worked extensively together in the past, and their professionalism lifts the production to heights not often seen in community theater. The technical demands for this show are myriad, from special lighting effects to full company dance routines. The skills of these talented designers have converted a bare stage into the hottest disco since the heyday of Studio 54 in the late 1970s.

Studio H’Poko is under the direction of producer Marsha Kelly, who has been with the company since its humble beginnings in 1990. The company debuted with the play “Nuts”, staged in the Wailuku Courthouse with actual Judge John E. McConnell performing the role behind the bench. “The Comedy of Errors” marks ten years of summer Shakespeare productions for the company, beginning with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” under the stars at the Hui No’eau in 1992. No venue could have been more magical when the weather cooperated, which it did all too infrequently during the three summers Studio H’Poko performed there.

Seabury’s Performance Studio, completed in 1995, provided the ideal alternative to dodging rain showers outside. H’Poko performed “Hamlet”, starring Eric Gilliom, in its first production at the new venue that summer and it has been in residence since then.

The cast of “The Comedy of Errors” includes many of Maui’s biggest names in theater.

From Lesley Alexander to Doug Self to Doug McBride, the cast is an eclectic collection of experienced artists. Many of the actors have appeared in previous H’Poko productions, and the camaraderie between them gives the cast a comfort level and a familiarity which lifts the

Doug Self, who lives in Huelo, has been with the company since the first show back in 1990. He has appeared in five previous Shakespeare plays with H’Poko, in addition to other stage and film work on the island. “What brings me back time and again to H’Poko is the people,” Self says. “The quality of the technical staff and my fellow actors is unmatched. Art Manke gives us the artistic freedom to take risks and discover elements of our characters which might otherwise go unnoticed.”

Doug McBride is a name familiar to any theater goer on Maui. In addition to acting in three shows with H’Poko, McBride has been involved as both an actor and director in more than twenty productions with Maui Community Theater. His wealth of experience is an asset to the company. McBride states, “What I value most is the opportunity to work with Art Manke. He values the work of actors and brings out my best abilities. Working with a professional of his caliber is both a pleasure and a learning experience.”

Art Manke notes a new element of this year’s production that has been a special pleasure for him. “For the first time I am working with a second generation of actors,” says Manke.

“The children of current and former company members are appearing in their first H’Poko productions.” This promises an exciting future for the company, as Amelia Nelson, Blanche Case, Justin Moschetti and Nathanael Vaky have acquired a taste for theater from their parents. “I saw ‘As You Like It’ about five times in the pouring rain at the Hui,” says Amelia Nelson, “and it’s a thrill to be on stage with actors I watched as a kid.”

Lesley Alexander, the mother of Nelson, appears in her fourth H’Poko Shakespeare production. Her mother, Lesley Gibson, is well known for the many times she graced Maui’s stages over the years of living here. “I am always pushed and challenged by working with these actors and Art Manke,” Alexander says. “He forces me to move outside my comfort zone as an actor and pursue more layers to my character than I otherwise might. But basically I am an Art groupie. I love to work with a director of his talent.”

“The Comedy of Errors” opens on Friday, August 2, and plays on weekends including Sundays through August 25 at Club Ephesus (AKA Seabury Performance Studio) in Makawao. Patrons are invited, nay more, encouraged to break out their old disco duds and come to the show in costume. Come early and stay late, dancing to the beat of Donna Summer, Sister Sledge, The Village People, and more acts gathering dust on the vinyl in the back of old record collections, or perhaps even eight-track tapes. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. Those audience members dressed in disco attire will get special treatment from the bouncer behind the velvet rope with immediate entry and preferred seating. In June, after the British musical group the Planets introduced a 60-second piece of complete silence on its latest album, representatives of the estate of composer John Cage, who once wrote “4’33”” (273 seconds of silence), threatened to sue the group for ripping Cage off (but failed, said the group, to specify which 60 of the 273 seconds it thought had been pilfered). Said Mike Batt of the Planets: “Mine is a much better silent piece. I (am) able to say in one minute what (took Cage) four minutes and 33 seconds.”

In July, a California Court of Appeal rejected as excessive an arbitration panel’s award of about $8,800 per lawyer-hour in fees ($88.5 million total, all from taxpayer funds) “earned” by the attorneys who successfully challenged an unconstitutional state law. Also in July, David L. Brite of California told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times that the Florida lawyer he had hired to find his step-grandmother’s will did only a few hours’ work, at most, yet intended to keep $350,000 (a 25 percent fee) because the will turned out to be worth $1.4 million.

Almost Rehabilitated In April in Fayetteville, N.C., Shirley Brigman Turriff, 63, was sentenced to six years in prison for embezzling $1.1 million from the law firm for which she had been office manager (Anderson Johnson), which had hired her shortly after she had been convicted for embezzling from her first employer. Anderson Johnson was fully aware that she was an embezzler when it hired her because one of its lawyers had defended her in that earlier case.

In March, Fremont County (Mont.) ­officials passed a resolution prohibiting “the presence” of grizzly bears within the boundaries of the county. And in May, a Magistrate Anurag Rastogi of the Gurgaon district near New Delhi, India, issued an order forbidding the assembly of four or more pigs. (Both the Montana resolution and the Indian order had other sections directed at any humans responsible for introducing the animals into public space, but the above provisions stand alone, seemingly directed at the animals themselves.)

A man in his 20s, identified only as Mr. Hsu, was rushed to a hospital from an Internet cafe‚ suffering paralysis after what was believed to be three consecutive days of playing a computer game (Chungho City, Taiwan). A 34-year-old man on his maiden sky dive let out a joyous whoop at 9,000 feet, which dislodged his false teeth, which fell and could not be found (Addison, Vt.).

Welcomes Tourists, Locals and Salty Sea Captains Growing up, you are taught several things when it comes to dining etiquette: Don’t eat too fast, chew with your mouth closed, put your napkin in your lap and never, ever talk with food in your mouth.

For some strange reason, adults seem to forget these golden dining rules. Mouths fly open with shredded beef swimming around while a story is being told, food bungee-jumps onto laps and lettuce pokes its head in and out of gapped teeth while a weird chewing routine occurs.

Why the hell do adults take it upon themselves to break the rules? I had the opportunity to witness these rules being ­broken. Penny Wigzell, the beautiful and lovely owner of Pancho and Lefty’s, hosted a media luncheon to celebrate her Cantina’s 15th anniversary. Pancho and Lefty’s, located in the Wharf Cinema Center in Lahaina, welcomes tourists, locals and salty sea captains.

As I dipped tortilla chips into savory salsa, I stared at pictures of Mexicans on the wall. At that moment, I didn’t realize what I was in for. Engaged in wonderful conversation with several people, I kept on eating the chips while washing them down with a cold glass of Coke.

I ordered a shredded beef chimichanga with beans and rice. The food server didn’t even have a tablet to write down everyone’s order - she memorized them! All the while I was praying to the Lord above that she didn’t screw up my order. We decided to try shrimp salads, tamales, tacos and chile ­rellenos.

The food arrived and every order was correct. Damn, she was good. So good, in fact, that she hasn’t ever written down an order her entire time at Pancho & Lefty’s!

Excitement filled the air as the food was placed on the table. Ohhhs and ahhhs were said in unison. Shit, I felt like I was in the audience on Emeril’s cooking show!

As I took my first bite of the chimichanga, I heard a strange noise coming from someone sitting next to me. It was the sound of food

Roxy serves up Hot & Crispy Taquitos being eaten. Not only was it being eaten, it was being chewed in such a way that I was able to hear every bite that was made. It sent chills down my spine. It was worse than nails scraping against a chalkboard. It was worse that having a fork hit my teeth. The dining rules were being broken left and right. Soon, I had to witness a ball of chewed-up chicken dancing around on someone’s tongue as they told a joke. I saw food eaten way too fast and I saw food licked off fingers.

My eyes were so busy watching everyone else that I hadn’t paid attention to my own dining etiquette. Food had dropped onto my lap, food was stuck in my teeth and I had eaten so many beans that I needed to leave the table to fart.

Plates were clean because everyone enjoyed the food. Pancho and Lefty’s has wonderful, fresh Mexican food. With an open bar and a friendly atmosphere, customers will experience a good time. Dad Goes To Hell But It’s OK

Sam Mendes Does The Wrong Thing With The Wrong Star And The Wrong Script Road To Perdition – Two Stars Tom Hanks is severely miscast as a coldblooded ‘30s era Irish mob hit man in director Sam Mendes’ (“American Beauty”) deliberately paced gangster melodrama based on the graphic novel by Max Allen Collins and illustrated by Richard Piers Rayner. Michael Sullivan (Hanks) is a stoic family man living a comfortable life on the outskirts of Depression-era Chicago until his mob boss’s son Conner (Daniel Craig - “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) begins a killing spree that’s unfortunately witnessed by Sullivan’s overly curious son Mike (Tyler Hoechlin). Family drama turns to bank-robbing bloodlust as father and son team up against the mob men who violently split their family apart. Filmed in beautiful winter hues, and with distinctive attention to costume and location, “Road To Perdition” works best as a period piece reflecting the mood of an era. But the film’s brutal yet fumblingly sentimental narrative neutralizes the movie into little more than an interesting series of gloomy images.

John Rooney (Paul Newman - “The Color of Money”) is an elderly Irish mob kingpin

with an uncontrollable son for an Achilles heel. Rooney’s middle-aged son Conner likes to emulate his father’s considerable power by killing people to mask the swindling he does from dad’s books. Sullivan’s 12-year-old son Mike, on the other hand, is respectful but a bit too curious about his dad’s cryptic line of business. When Mike hides inside his dad’s car to discover where he goes late at night, Mike bears witness to a multiple slaughter in which dad does much of the trigger work.

Mike allows himself to be caught by his father and Conner, thereby jeopardizing his family to mob rules.

It isn’t long before Michael and 12-yearold Mike are on the run from a hired killer (Maguire - played by Jude Law), even as Michael puts his son doubly in harms way to help rob banks while he seeks revenge against Conner and the mob.

It is here that the attempted comparison between fathers and their sons runs afoul.

Tom Hanks in Road To Perdition as he seeks bloody retribution and robs banks. John Rooney knows that his son Conner is a swindler and a senseless murderer but refuses to punish or allow harm to come to him.

In this vague comparison concerning the loyalty of fathers to their sons is a gray area where paternal accountability yields to a ­simple fact of fatherhood as its own state of grace. We, the audience, are supposed to overlook Sullivan’s irresponsible actions involving his son because we too should want to see his revenge realized. As well, we are expected to agree with Sullivan when he exonerates Mike of any blame in their plight, although none of this would’ve happened if the kid had been home in bed instead of sticking his nose in his father’s business.

The message seems to be that fathers shouldn’t punish sons, and in return the sons will not blame their fathers when they wreak havoc on the people around them. This huge hole in the thematic congruity of the narrative is exacerbated by Tom Hanks’ moody and sentimental take on a character driven by revenge, not fatherly impulses. For all of Tom Hanks’ immense popularity, he is an

actor with a very limited range that is further impeded by his emotionally bound tunnel vision in every character he plays.

‘Show don’t tell’ is a phrase engraved on the forehead of every screenwriter who has picked up a pen in the last 20 years. Why then does the virus of voice-over narration still persist into the 21st century? When Michael Sullivan Jr. instructs the audience at the end of the movie about the peace he’s made with his father, the man who left-handedly chaperoned about the destruction of his family, it insults the intelligence of the audience on ­several levels. Does Mike think that driving getaway for his dad was so ‘cool’ as to rule out his father’s irresponsibility in the act of endangering them both and making his son a criminal?

Is he so without anger or remorse that he can equivocate like a numb politician an incalculable blow to his identity? Questions like these nip at “Road To Perdition” like wolves to wild geese. One thing that’s certain is Jude Law’s movie-­stealing performance as a diabolical homicide photographer moon­lighting as a ‘gifted’ assassin. Once again Jude Law is peerless.

In a story as old as time, a young man in love with a women from outside his faith has to wrestle with the desires of his family to insert him into an arranged marriage (a sort of a Matzoh Ball Wedding rather than Monsoon Wedding). The film also features a love scene that is “one of the lengthiest, most passionate, erotic and tender to occur in a love story.” (LA Times) Unrated 100 min.

New This Week The Master of Disguise - (PG) - Comedy -Pistachio Disguisey (Carvey), a genial waiter at his father Frabbrizio’s (James Brolin) Italian restaurant, possesses an uncanny knack for ­mimicry. What he doesn’t know is that his talent is genetic, and that he is the descendent of a long line of “Masters of Disguise,”all of whom have inherited the secret family gift known as “Energico.”

SIGNS - (PG-13) - Thriller - Writer/Director M. Night Shyamalan follows up “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” with his new feature film, “Signs,” a thriller set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania focusing on the mysterious appearance of a five-hundred-foot design of circles and lines carved into a family’s crops. Mel Gibson stars as Graham Hess, the ­family patriarch, who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the unfolding ­mystery. Joaquin Phoenix is Merrill Hess, brother to Graham and a former minor league baseball star.

Now Showing Austin Powers in goldmember - (PG-13) -Comedy He’s back, baby! It’s been 3 years since Austin Powers, that swinging international man of mystery, has had to face his arch enemy, Dr. Evil. But after Dr. Evil and his accomplice Mini-Me escape from a maximum-security prison, Austin is called to action once more in this third and final installment.

The bourne Identity - (PG-13) - Thriller - A man ­awakens from a coma-like state only to find out he cannot recall his past. He soon finds himself the target of an international terrorist, and the only person who may hold the answers to his true identity is a woman who claims to know his past.

Bus And Them I’ve been dating a great woman for about a month. We slept together on our second date (too soon, I know). On our next date, she admitted she’s seeing other guys, too. I was cool about this at first, but the longer we date, the more I feel like I’m being used. It’s like being told, “You’re the best thing going right now, but I think I could do better.” I feel like the dreaded “just friends” conversation is always lurking around the corner. (We haven’t had sex since that second date, despite some passionate moments.) Is it too early in the relationship to be thinking this way? How long should I let this continue?
