How much single-use plastic packaging did you throw “away” today?

I was amazed to learn that the “chasing arrows” seen on the bottom of many plastic items does NOT indicate that the material is recyclable. That number is placed on the item by the manufacturer to indicate the type of plastic used. According to the plastics industry, those arrows were added as a “catchy graphic” to frame the numerical code and were “never intended” to indicate that a container was recyclable or had recycled content.

On Maui, only some of type 2 plastic (milk bottles and laundry soap type bottles) can be remade into a usable product (plastic lumber). All the other plastic types require shipment off-island and usually the bulk of it ends up in someone else’s landfill.

In addition to the sheer bulk that singleuse plastic packaging generates for our landfill, the manufacture and disposal of plastics creates toxins that persist in our environment. According to the EPA’s 1994 Toxic Release Inventory, the plastics industry annually contributes 14% of the national total of toxic releases to the atmosphere.

Our waste stream on Maui is about 25% plastic by volume, according to a 1994 County of Maui study. This is creating a

I just moved from Vegas to Maui 2 days ago to become a permanent resident here. As a Palestinian American, I thought I will never hear a word about world politics once I move so far away from the rest of the world. But yet I picked Maui Time Weekly & read your commentary & I am impressed.

Your opinion is absolutely poignant & true. If there is any reason that Arafat is still in power today is American aid to keep him in power hoping he will deliver being the watchdog for Israel against his own people. Once he failed or is incapable to achieve that, we put him down & it’s time to bring somebody else in.

In general, all US aid to third world countries is not to help the population at stake but their corrupt governments that serve US & western interest. Iraq is another perfect example among many others.

At the same time, I must admit that until I moved to the states at the age of 16

did I ever encounter homeless people in the streets, crime, drugs, & lack of proper education. It simply did not exist in my hometown Ramallah even under the most brutal occupation.

In theory, I believe that we are all equal humans & the wealth of this earth should be more justly shared by all. However, reality is that it does not. Any political claims that the aid today serves that purpose is a fallacy.

Oh my god!

Listen closely. Can you hear it? Can you hear the distant rumble of massive social and political upheaval creeping over the horizon like an approaching storm worthy of a Stephen King novel? If you can’t hear it, you will.

It all started innocently enough, I’m sure. A California atheist, Michael Newdow, did not want his 2nd grade daughter to be forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in class, claiming that the statement “one Nation, under God”, violated her civil rights. As is customary with American society, if you don’t like something, and you feel like you need some attention, you file a lawsuit, which Mr. Newdow promptly did.

Federal Appeals Court Judge Alfred T. Goodwin then proceeded to side with Mr. Newdow, declaring the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional in that it violated the separation of church and state.

Talk about the you-know-what hitting the fan. People across the nation were apoplectic as Judge Goodwin cast his opinion, in the face of the Fourth of July no less. Now, we’ve all seen the often-times ridiculous impacts of the politically correct, ultra-sensitive philosophical trends that this nation has been forced to endure over the last decade and a half, but this is going overboard.

Mr. Newdow’s argument, echoed by Judge Goodwin, was that how would we feel if our Pledge of Allegiance contained the words “one nation under Zeus”, or “under Allah,” etc. I can understand his point, but what he fails to realize is that the American Constitution was not founded on the principle that Zeus created all men equal or that Allah created all men equal.

If that were the case, we would be living like the Taliban and Mr. Newdow would not even know how to spell lawsuit. As it was, this nation was founded on the very principle that God - the Western version of him - created all men equal, and when pledging our allegiance to the national symbol, it is not violating anyone’s civil rights to expect them to pay respect to the ideals on which that symbol was created.

The Pledge of Allegiance does not demand that anyone reciting its words worship God as our Creator, but what it does do is demand we recognize the historical relevance He plays within our country, a relevance made even more evident when a citizen of said country is allowed to sue the national flag.

Luckily however, the uproar was immediate and swift and Judge Goodwin put his ruling on hold indefinitely. Congressmen and Senators alike had taken quick action and recited the Pledge on the floors of both chambers in unison following the judge’s ruling. What they were scared of was the other implications a ruling like that could effect.

would be the next target. Canceling all American currency worldwide because it violated the separation of church and state would hardly be feasible, but what about the swearing in of individuals giving testimony in a court of law?

Even if you’ve never been on the stand, you know the words. “Place your left hand on the Bible and raise your right hand.

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” Dutifully, you nod your head, but what if you don’t believe in God? Does that mean the oath you just took bears no standing? After all, if you do not believe in God or His book, you would not be desecrating anyone or anything by telling a few small lies. While the Pledge of Allegiance is safe for now, what about our court system?

As the CEO of a large financial institution, he makes decisions that effect every one of us on a regular basis, whether we know it or not. However, he recently had a chance to assume a position that would have affected our lives on a daily basis with us knowing about it every step of the way; but he opted out.

It’s a sad statement against politics when legitimate candidates remove themselves from consideration because serving the public would effectively ruin their lives.

Walter Dods was mentioned as candidate for Governor of Hawaii but after special consultation with family and friends, he came to the conclusion that the toll it would take was just not worth it in the long run.

We’ve all seen good politicians taken down due to vicious attacks from opponents often using tactics that have absolutely nothing to do with the political concerns of this country. Bill Clinton was a perfect example. Obviously, the way he handled the accusations against him did not endear him to the public, but did his indiscretions really warrant the hassle it caused him and the entire country? No, but the media didn’t care about that and neither did the Republican underground. They were angry at losing the election and they were going to make sure they sullied the reputation of the Democrat in the Oval Office regardless of who it was.

Unfortunately, they weren’t aware, or didn’t care, that they were causing damage to the reputation of the entire country at the same time. When Walter Dods looked at the way politicians were treated, he undoubtedly considered whether he ­wanted himself and his entire family to be set up for the kill simply to satisfy the current trend in ­politics. He had no desire to settle scores within a political party that he initially had nothing to do with. But that’s not how things are ­currently being done and we’ve now entered the era where we lose candidates before they’ve even declared.

Citizen initiative: Direct democracy or only illusion?

Nishiki wants to make citizen ballot initiatives easier by requiring fewer petition signatures Maui County voters have had the right to place legislation on the ballot using the initiative process since the County Charter was first adopted in 1969. Yet no one has ever met the signature gathering requirements to do so.

Diane Wakamatsu of the County Clerk’s office says they looked at every election since 1970 and couldn’t find a single initiative on the ballot.

“We’ve checked our election files and we’ve not found any initiatives that were done during the election process,” says Wakamatsu.

Maui County Council member Wayne Nishiki wants to change that. He proposes a Charter Amendment to change Maui County’s stringent requirements that signatures of 20 percent of the county’s registered voters must be gathered within 30 days in order to put an initiative on the ballot.

Nishiki proposes that be changed to 10 percent of the voters in the last election and that the 30-day time limit to collect the signatures be dropped.

During the last election, 39,645 people voted in Maui County, so 10 percent would be 3,965. By contrast, 20 percent of that year’s 73,258 registered voters comes to 14,652.

The citizens’ initiative is a procedure by which citizens can propose a law by collecting voters’ signatures on a petition and ensure that the proposed law gets on the ballot.

Nishiki says some constituents asked him to make one more attempt to loosen the requirements for legislating by citizen’s initiative.

“This petition was actually drawn up by some citizens of Maui County who wanted to see it occur,” says Nishiki, who put his amendment before the Council July 2. “The purpose is to increase citizen power.”

A similar proposal that was on the ballot here in 1992 was defeated by less than 2,000 votes out of more than 29,000 votes cast. Nishiki says he believes the reason it failed was because it was poorly worded.

Ironically, that is one of the criticisms about citizen initiatives. If the initiative isn’t worded clearly, people may vote contrary to what they actually mean. Or they may approve a measure that a court later rules is illegal because of the way it was ­worded.

“Because drafting is such a technical skill, the citizens’ attempt at legislating is almost always vulnerable to challenge and ultimate final definition by the courts — our least democratic institution,” write Ken Dolbeare and Janette Hubbell in a 1997 article for the webzine Citizen Power.

Citizen Power is part of the Teledemocracy Action News Network of Auburn University’s Department of Political Science.

Can’t Possibly Be True In June, the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia, awarded Damien Keller, 31, the equivalent of $313,000 (U.S.) for injuries he suffered while robbing a taxi driver at knifepoint in 1994. Although the driver had fled the robbery, Keller chased him until the ­cornered driver was forced to hit Keller with a stick and punch him in the face. Keller ­suffered brain damage because, he said, the police and ambulance service did not treat him speedily enough.

On May 6, a 32-year-old woman apparently attempting suicide plunged 14 stories from a window at the Four Ambassadors condominium in Miami, but walked away with only a broken arm when she landed on the roof of a late-model Honda. She had been hospitalized three days earlier after taking an overdose of pills.

Robert Daniel Irving was cleared in May to receive the equivalent of $28,500 (U.S.) in standard spousal death benefits from the Manitoba (Canada) Public Insurance fund.

There had been speculation that he would be denied the award in that the way his 22-year-old wife died was as a passenger in Irving’s car when he crashed while drunkdriving. Irving pleaded guilty to impaired driving, but the Manitoba agency said the plea was irrelevant to his eligibility for ­benefits.

The Agence France-Presse news service reported in April that a severely disabled boy (believed to be about age 7) had been taken in by a children’s home in Kano, Nigeria, in 1996 after having been abandoned by his nomadic parents and raised with chimpanzees for 18 months. The nursing staff at the Tudun Maliki Torrey home said the kid now no longer drags his hands on the ground as he walks but still often springs at people and makes chimplike noises. The nomadic Fulani people of Nigeria have been known to reject disabled children as too ­difficult to travel with.

People Different From Us The Doctors Were Wrong: Apparently angry because local doctors kept telling him nothing was wrong with him, Shawn Eric Bird, 40, allegedly mailed more than 100 envelopes containing notes with childlike insults and smeared cat feces and urine to medical offices and other establishments around Belleville, Ontario, before being arrested in May. Police finally caught him when Bird (referring to himself as the “Spiderman” character, the Green Goblin) called a station house to chide them for incompetence, and officers surmised from the background noise where Bird was calling from.

Cheryl Bouillon grew up in sunny Southern California horseback riding and water skiing. She often had days where she was in the sun for eight to 10 hours. And never once did she think about putting on sun screen.

“There wasn’t any information about the dangers of the sun back then,” she said. “So my parents never made me wear it and anyways I loved being tan. I thought it looked good.”

When she moved to Maui at age 27, she said she ­started taking care of her skin, but even then it was already too late. She had no idea the damage had already been done.

“I just hated the way my skin felt and looked,” she said. “I wanted to protect it so I started wearing sunscreen constantly and not exposing myself to the sun as much.”

But 42-year-old Bouillon is now paying the price for what she did to her skin more than 20 years ago.

According to the American Cancer Society, Bouillon is just one of almost a million people who will discover they have skin cancer this year. And close to 10,000 of those people will die as a result.

Bouillon recently discovered two lesions, one on her hand and one on her arm, and had them removed because they were diagnosed as skin cancer.

Yet while thousands of people, some of them right here in Maui, are repeatedly going to dermatologists, having biopsies performed and cancer dug out of their skin, thousands more are laying out at beaches, by their pools, or even in their back yards, cooking themselves in the sun without a drop of sunscreen.

Bouillon said now she looks at all these people who make it a priority to tan and thinks they are absolutely crazy.

“It’s just like sitting in a frying pan. I look at people who were never in the sun and not only are they skin cancer free, but they look younger too,” she said. “Even if you are lucky enough to escape skin cancer, the sun will cause premature aging and increased freckles.”

And here in Maui the year-round sunshine is a major attraction. It’s one reason why millions of tourists choose to spend their vacation here and it’s why some of us make it home. We need the sun. Sunlight can help with depression, it keeps us outdoors, active, and it gives us that healthy glow that people find so attractive.

But at what price is that tan worth? And are we at even a greater risk because of our increased sun exposure?

Dr. George Martin, a dermatologist in Kihei since 1989 who specializes in skin cancer and reconstructive surgery, said there is absolutely no question that we need to be even more careful because of where Maui is located geographically.

“You can get sunburned on Maui about 330 days of the year,” Martin said. “And the sun is clearly more intense because of the proximity to the equator. These things relate directly to an increased chance of skin ­cancer.”

He said that there are three major forms of skin c­ ancer; basal cell, squamos cell, and melanoma and that they all are triggered by sun light. Basal cell cancer accounts for about 85 percent of all cases and even though it does not metastasize (spread) it can be extremely destructive and get down to the bone if it goes untreated. Squamos cell lesions account for 10-11 percent and are usually crusted or eroded and tend to itch a lot. They have the potential to spread very aggressively and enter the lymph nodes if left untreated.

Statistically the third form, melanoma, is the deadliest even though it accounts for only 4 percent of all cases because it can spread to other parts of the body “But early detection is so important because even melanoma when caught in its earliest stages can be 100 percent curable,” he said. “Unfortunately that is not always the case.”

Martin said that although no one is immune to skin cancer, there are six major risk factors that have been identified with melanoma.

• Individuals that have red or blonde hair • A family history of cancer • Pre-cancerous lesions on the skin • Marked freckling on the upper back • Three or more blistering sun burns before the age of 20 • Three or more years of outdoor summer jobs during the teenage years

“Having two of these risk factors increases your chances 3 to 4 times,” he said. “But having three or increases your chances about 20 times. It is now estimated that one in 70 will be diagnosed with melanoma in their life time. I don’t want to scare people; I just want them to have some sensitivity toward the issue.”

Martin said prevention is simple. If you minimize the sun damage, then you will minimize the risk. He ­recommends wearing a sunscreen with minimum SPF of 15, but it depends on the activity level.

“If you are going to be out swimming, playing volleyball, or hiking in the sun all day then you need a heavy duty, waterproof sunscreen that is really going to last,” he said. “People have to be smart because sometimes a daily light sun block just isn’t going to cut it.”

But what about those people who are intent on ­tanning? Martin said the bottom line is that a tan equals damage.

“For those who love to tan, it is inevitable that they will have problems down the road even if it’s not in the form of skin cancer,” he said. “Ninety percent of the aging process is due to sun exposure. It is just a fact that tanning will leave you wrinkled and leathery. And ­tanning salons, well I think those should be illegal.”

Martin said people have to realize they are not going to see immediate results from taking care of their skin and wearing sunscreen.

being done now,” he said. “Those blistering sun burns you get will come back to bite you in the butt 20 or 30 years later.”

And people with skin cancer understand how true that really is.

Searge McBride is the perfect example. He loved being in the sun. He was a lifeguard for years and always participated in water sports, but sunscreen wasn’t a familiar concept and he never thought he would have any problems.

“I have skin cancer,” he said. “And because it doesn’t show up right away, it is hard to realize the severity of what you are doing to your skin by tanning in your younger years. While you are doing it, you can’t imagine it being harmful, but it all starting coming out as soon as I turned 50.”

McBride said early detection has been vital in keeping his cancer under control.

“It is important to do self checks and see a dermatologist regularly. General Practitioners do know what to look for and can be helpful, but they are not the experts and you don’t want to take the chance of something being over looked or dismissed too quickly,” he said. “Skin cancer really can be controlled by preventative medicine because the longer you wait, the more they have to carve out.”

McBride said now he is very careful about his skin. He works outdoors in the sun all day, but is always reapplying sun screen with an SPF of 45 and wears long sleeves and wide brim hats. He also tries to warn the younger people that he works with about the ­dangers of excessive sun exposure in the younger years.

“This really has become an epidemic and the damage to my skin has already been done,” he said. “But awareness is spreading and it seems like parents do realize how important it is for them to protect their kids.”

to take include lathering up with sunscreen, covering up with clothing, and avoiding the sun between the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. even on cloudy days. It recommends that because the sun in Hawaii is stronger, a sunscreen with the minimum SPF of 30 be used here. Also, sunscreen should be applied 30 to 45 minutes before going outdoors in Hawaii, compared with 15 to 30 minutes else where. It is especially important to follow these guidelines as a child and a young adult, because those are the years when the most damage is done.

With the deteriorating ozone layer, skin cancer is on the rise. New cases of Melanoma have doubled in the past 20 years. However because of education awareness and prevention efforts by organizations such as the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, The Skin Cancer Foundation, The American Cancer Society, dermatologists, and HMO’s, people are changing their ways.

Former sun lover Aaron Leroux used to be a regular tanner, but now he is a new dad and he isn’t going to let his son make the same mistakes.

“We really make it a priority to monitor how much he is in the sun. Even on walks outside we put sunscreen all over and try to expose as little skin as possible,” he said.

“When I was growing up on the East Coast, sunscreen was unheard of. I couldn’t wait until those first sunny days where I could lay out and get tan. I don’t want my son to think like that.”

Leroux, now 30 and married, said it took him several horrible sun burns and a wife for him to start caring for his own skin.

“My wife is really good about skin care, always making sure I have sunscreen on,” he said. “She made me think about the dangers and how we will raise our son with that knowledge. It is definitely something that people should take seriously. All that tanning seems like a great idea now, but you just don’t know what will happen years later.”

The American Cancer Society recommends monthly self examinations for all adults, physician skin examinations every three years from the ages of 20 to 39 and annually for those over 40.

Local talent featured at ongoing contests Battle of the Bands at Hapa’s and Las Vegas Showcase at Lahaina Coolers Big Boys Night Out presents battle of the bands summer jam The 2002 Battle of the Bands Summer Jam is an event to highlight some of maui’s newest entertainers. Basically, each group will have the opportunity to perform at Hapa’s Night Club and be scored for their performances. In round one of the competition each group is challenged to acquire the highest points possible. At the end of round one, the six highest scores will move on to round two. In round two the three highest scores will enter into round four. Then on September 6, 2002, the final round will produce a winner who will be awarded a grand prize. Lahaina Coolers Las Vegas Challenge Stacy Knight of Lahaina, Hawaii is the winner of the first Lahaina Coolers Las Vegas Challenge held on Thursday June 27, 2002. Stacy, a self-proclaimed “karaokeholic”, hands down won the first contest with her captivating performance. Stacy has a wonderful singing talent and the audience at Lahaina Coolers showed their enthusiastic appreciation by cheering her onto the final competition. The Las Vegas Challenge is a series of talent competitions being held every other Thursday at Lahaina Coolers for the next twelve weeks. At each competition a winner is chosen by audience response. A total of six competitors will compete at the final showdown on September 19, 2002. Lahaina Coolers will send the final winner to Las Vegas to be the opening act at a Las Vegas Showroom! Included in the grand prize are round trip airfare and hotel accommodations

for the final winner. The competition is open to all entertainers but only one prize will be awarded. Contestants may enter more than once if not chosen as a finalist.

Men In Black II Sci-Fi Repo Men

Agents Jay And Kay Save The Planet - Again – Three Stars organization run by Zed (Rip Torn - “Freddy Got Fingered”). Agent Jay has been suffering through a litany of unsuitable partners since putting Kay (the all-time hero of the MIB organization) out of commission, but he hits a new low when Zed places Frank the over­zealous pug (returning from the original MIB) to assist him. Hilarity ensues as Frank momentarily dons a black suit and tie to disguise his canine body.

The movie kicks off with Peter Graves (television’s “Mission Impossible”) doing a ‘Twilight Zone’ inspired television expose on the ‘Men In Black’ that includes a short dramatized history of the initial contact between the MIB and Serleena (Boyle). The sequence reveals that the evil alien was expelled from Earth some 40 odd years ago by the MIB and serves as a B-movie sketch history that’s later referenced in a full-scale flashback by the MIB to understand the ­danger that Earth faces from Serleena’s quest for ‘the light.’

Agent Jay has become an instructional voice of reason to humanity and Agent Kay is just as undaunted and matter-of-fact as ever.

Waiting Ends for Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2002 Contest Doesn’t Happen at Dungeons, Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa Africa’s most extreme surfing event ended in Cape Town on Sunday when the 20-day waiting period for the 2002 edition of Red Bull Big Wave Africa drew to a close.

Dungeons, the deep water reef a 15-minute boat ride from Hout Bay harbour, fully justified its reputation by providing some of the biggest waves ever surfed on the continent’s coastline during this year’s event, but the exposed venue did not produce the 6 hours of consistent swell over five metres (15 foot) required to run the contest.

Most of the expanded field of 18 invited big wave surfers and three alternates rode Dungeons every time it broke, with several particularly memorable sessions in the past three weeks featuring waves exceeding seven metres (20 foot) that had everyone’s adrenaline pumping, snapping 10mm leashes and surfboards, causing a number of session ending injuries and giving the water safety crew plenty of opportunity to hone their rescue techniques.

“It’s been a blast,” said Californian Grant Washburn, winner of the R10 000 Biggest Wave award for a 20 + foot monster ridden on Wednesday 19 June. “The experience of exploring Dungeons has been so gratifying and catching a couple of those big ones was the highlight of my career.”

“Dungeons is probably the most challenging big wave spot I have ridden at that size and having all the backup and safety measures in place to take on a wave like that makes Red Bull Big Wave Africa a successful event, even if the contest itself doesn’t run for 10 years,” he added, echoing the sentiments of all involved.

Durban’s John Whittle, winner of the Biggest Wave award in 2001 and who was again in contention for the award this year, took home R5 000 for the Deep Throat award presented to the surfer who consistently commits himself to catching the biggest waves during the waiting period.

Sean Holmes from Wilderness, the 2000 Red Bull BWA champion, re-affirmed his credentials by clinching the Best Tube award for an epic barrel ride on an 15 footer last Thursday.

Peninsula National Park, which prohibits the use of motorised craft within 500 metres of the shoreline without a permit, the challenge of riding the continent’s biggest waves will only be resumed again when Red Bull Big Wave Africa is staged next year.

Sportsresults Valentin surfs his way to victory at Lahaina Longboarding Pro’s Surf the Harbor In the only professional longboarding event on Maui, Joey Valentin of Honolulu proved that he’s got what it takes when it comes to surfing the waves on the Valley Isle.

Valentin sealed his second victory at this past weekend’s ASTON No Ka Oi, the second event in the 2002 HLF Steinlager Series.

The contest was held at Lahaina Harbor in ever changing wind and wave conditions that were shoulder to head high. Of the 170 surfers, 30 of the state’s best longboarders competed for at $2,000 prize purse in the Steinlager Pro division.

Wave conditions challenged surfers to be as versatile as possible, proving themselves amid rising tides and swirling winds. Some heats were clean and glassy while others had on-shore breakers, possibly causing the demise of favorites Bonga Perkins and Sion Milosky in earlier rounds held on Saturday.

The Steinlager Pro final was held Sunday morning at the request of finalists Kanoa Dahlin, Dino Miranda, Joey Valentin and

Noah Shimabukuro. Conditions improved to more consistent, clean head-high surf, deemed “fun” by those that were lucky enough to make it this far. 3 Oahuans were pitted against the lone Maui local - 19 year old Noah Shimabukuro.

Shimabukuro consistently won earlier heats only to place second to Valentin in the semifinal, foreshadowing events to come. Long noserides and large cutbacks were countered and answered for among the two in the steep, shallow reef-break throughout the 30 minute final. In the end, Joey Valentin scored a total of 22.5 points (out of a possible 30 points), only one point ahead of Shimabukuro’s 21.5 to seal his win.

“I just want to thank the sponsors, organizers and the people of Lahaina for a successful event.” said Valentin as he collected his trophy and a $600.00 check. Both from Haleiwa, Kanoa Dahlin scored 16.5 points and $300.00 and former World Longboard Champion Dino Miranda earned $250.00 with a score of 15.5.

Slummer Love I work in a little insurance agency, and live a pretty routine life. Two months ago, I went to the bank to open a new account.

When I reached the window, there she was — this breathtakingly beautiful teller.

After two months of muttering, “Here’s my deposit slip,” I found the courage to ask “Bank Girl” to lunch. Much to my surprise, she said yes. Lunch went really well, so I took her to a pro baseball game (because she said she loves baseball), then to dinner. At dinner, she dropped hints that she’s interested in dating me. The problem is, I’m an average-looking guy. I sort of resemble Tom Hanks; she’s simply ­gorgeous. I think she’s “out of my league,” and everybody I know agrees. Does it make any sense to imagine that a girl this amazing might venture down from her league to play in mine?

—Painfully Average Joe There’s dating down and there’s dating down. The way you see it, Bank Girl isn’t just stooping to date you; it’s more of a free-fall on her part. Apparently, she has yet to get the message that you’re but a few food chain links up from having cilia instead of legs. Once she comes to her senses, it shouldn’t take much for her to get rid of you. In fact, if you’re as lowly as you think, she can simply accessorize with a flea collar for a few days — that is, if Lysol or antibiotics don’t do the trick.

You might, however, entertain the possibility that she isn’t hanging with you just because her cuff got caught in the low end of the food chain. Moreover, as a bank teller, she probably has reasonable command of the English language...including the word “no,” and the follow-up statement, “I’d rather stay home and draw crop circles in dust than go out with you.” Okay, so Tom Hanks isn’t exactly Tom Cruise, but he’s no Quasimodo either. Even if you’ve got a bit of a Quasimodo thing going on, it might not be a deal-breaker for a woman who’s in for more than short-term fun.

See, although men seem to be wired to want young, beautiful babes; women tend to seek men with potential for power and ­status over men with potential for getting cast for an Abercrombie ad. Perhaps that’s why you sometimes hear stories about a waitress getting hitched to a gazillionaire, but never about an international supermodel going for the big happily ever after with some plumber.

Bank Girl could be under the impression you’re some Big Man On (the insurance) Campus, selling policies to every little old lady on the continent. To cultivate that impression, walk and talk (or shake your cilia) “like you own the place”...as opposed to slithering around like you clean the ­toilets for just under minimum wage.

Do keep in mind that dating leagues work like baseball leagues. In baseball, even if you’re the hotshot of the peewee playoffs, it’s pointless to campaign

for a multi-million-dollar contract in the majors, plus a private jet for your cat. If you’re right that Bank Girl is unwittingly slumming, she probably won’t be long for your dugout. Knowing this might tempt you to cut your losses. Still, there is that off chance that nobody’s opinion of you is quite as low as your own. It might be wiser to cut loose with her for as many innings you can — until she calls the relationship on account of your being a near relative of plankton.

Conform School My boyfriend, a graduate student (and soon-to-be-M.D.), is about to meet my ­conservative parents. To put it mildly, he dresses more creatively than they’re used to. (He wears earrings and wild clothes.)

He also has the most wonderful integrity, character, and personality. How can I get him to tone down his look so my parents can see beyond his outer shell?

—Homeward Bounds It doesn’t seem too outrageous to ask your boyfriend to opt for a nice conservative pair of pearl studs instead of those big feathered hoops he saves in case the ­hospital is plunged into pitch darkness during his rotation. What a great way to fool the folks into thinking you lined up a man like dear old dad — a boyfriend who wears knockoffs of the earrings daddy bought mummy for Christmas!

Of course, you could opt for a nobler goal than fooling your parents; say, prying open their tiny little minds prior to your visit. That way, the important stuff — your boyfriend’s character and who you really are — can seep in. Regarding telling your boyfriend what to wear: The guy was smart enough to get into medical school — he probably knows better than to meet your parents in a kilt, fishnets, and body glitter.
