What Will Be the Fate of Maui's Central Valley?

The California group has “a lot of expertise on the global food market,” Strand added.

Although his remarks would seem to conflict with the heavily circulating rumors that a Canadian pension fund is finalizing plans to buy 55,000 acres of A&B’s agricultural holdings on Maui, informed sources suggested that the pension fund is the source of the funding for A&B’s “farming partner.” The rumor largely originated from remarks made by a high-ranking state official to a group at the Hawai’i Farmers Union Convention in October. Individuals who overheard the comments said that the partner had a contract with Starbucks to grow coffee on some of the acreage.

As A&B executives discussed their plans with the DLNR board, spokesman Darren Pai was less forthcoming than his colleagues about A&B’s California partner.

Instead, in his remarks to MauiTime on Friday about the rumors, he addressed complaints from local companies and organizations who were in discussions with A&B to purchase the Central Valley agricultural lands for farming and now say that their negotiations with A&B have stalled.

“We are not actively marketing our agricultural lands for sale,” he said. “We are engaged in discussions with agricultural users who are interested in farming substantially all of the acreage. Our primary goal since the shutdown of HC&S has been to find third parties with viable farming plans, and we believe we are making progress in that regard.”

“If the discussions are successful,” Pai added, “these farming initiatives could result in a lease or sale of lands, or a combination. We will need to conclude those discussions before we can substantively engage with any other group or individual.

It is important to note that since we ceased sugar operations we have engaged with hundreds of parties, both local and from

around food security offers.”

“After all these years, isn’t it incumbent on A&B to consider the future of the people of the Island of Maui?” he asked.

When Greenleaf heard the comments made by the State of Hawai‘i official regarding the sale of 55,000 acres of A&B’s Maui land holdings, he wrote a letter to Governor David Ige. He questioned why an “Eco Development group from Chicago who have 40 years of experience in the business of repurposing large tracts of land” was suddenly shut out of negotiations.

“This group and its consultants have met with A&B. They have shared their plans and history with A&B. This group would like to begin and cannot as A&B has not been willing to share their asking price. A&B has discussed leasing the land to the Maui group but has recently shut them out of the discussion,” he wrote.

“The story changed at the HFUU State Convention,” Greenleaf continued. “It was revealed that A&B is nearing completion of a sale to a group who are not from Hawaii.

This revelation brings up some questions.

Why is A&B ignoring a responsible and respected group with an offer? Who is the group A&B is making a deal with? What will they grow? Will it feed the people of Hawaii or be non-food crops? Will their cultivation practices add more run-off to our reefs and CO2 to our air?”

lexander and Baldwin has a potential partner who wants to grow various crops on “the entire footprint,” of A&B’s agricultural holdings on Maui, a company official said Friday.

“We’re pursuing and have had inquiry from a farming partner out of California, and they have an interest in farming nearly the whole footprint of land. We’re in discussions with them looking at growing a whole variety of food crops,” A&B’s general manager of diversified agriculture on Maui, Darren Strand, told members of the Board of Land and Natural Resources during the Nov. 9 meeting. The statements were part of A&B’s request to renew the permit that allows it to take 80 million gallons per day of stream water from state lands.

“This group has an aligned vision with ours, they have extensive farming expertise, a solid source of funding, established marketing channels, and also an interest in the entire footprint, which is a combination of promising attributes that we haven’t seen from the any of the hundreds of other parties that we’ve talked to in the past,” A&B Vice President Meredith Ching told the board. “They’re in their final stages of feasibility analysis of a farming operation, at the end of scale, to plant the entire plantation footprint and if they decide to proceed, planting will possibly begin in 2019.”

Strand told the BLNR that A&B, as a publicly traded company, could not disclose details of these discussions. However, he stated that A&B has been sharing “extensive data” with the California group during recent months.

“We can talk about the plans we have this year,“ Strand said. “There’s an expansion of the pasture area, an area of beverage crops or coffee on the Kihei side, orchard crops and tropical fruits, and row crops on the West Maui portion: greens, alfalfa, berries. There’s land set aside for local farmer candidates and the agricultural park. The plan is to grow food crops, and

the mainland, as we have worked to find viable farming activities.”

When asked for further details about the unnamed California partner or the rumors of a Canadian pension fund, Pai responded that the company had nothing to add at this time.

Alexander and Baldwin is the largest private landowner on Maui, and since the cessation of its sugar operations in 2016 has been the subject of much speculation and interest regarding the fate of the 36,000 acres previously used to grow sugarcane.

“I am disappointed that they move ahead in such secrecy without involving the community,” Councilmember Kelly King, a frontrunner to be chair of the new County Council-elect, told me “I understand that it’s private property, but it involves everyone in Maui County. We would have hoped that as a parent company, and one that participates in the community on so many other levels, that they would be concerned in wanting the community involved in the discussions leading up to the decisions, instead of making these decisions and then dropping them on the community without so much as holding a public meeting.”

“Where the land goes and who owns it affects everybody on the island,” she added, “and I have concerns about who that’s going to be, what they’re going to be farming, and what chemicals they may be using – and all these things should really be coming to the community.”

As of press time, Mayor-elect Mike Victorino did not respond to a request for comment.

Bill Greenleaf, a farmer, co-owner of Greenleaf Farms, and former Hawai‘i Farmers Union chapter president, has been concerned about the future of the Maui’s Central Valley ever since the sugarcane operations were shuttered.

Greenleaf says although off-island investors understand the power of profit, “People who live on Maui understand the opportunity that a well-developed plan

One organization, Food Security Hawai‘i, has been interested in the possibility of purchasing the Central Valley land to lease to farmers for local food production. This would include the Pu‘unene sugarcane mill, which would be used for processing infrastructure and a food hub.

Kelly King is a frontrunner to chair the new council

THE WEEK AFTER: A POST-ELECTION WRAP UP NATIONAL A part of me resists national news. Since becoming domineered by the forces of Trumpism, the news cycle has become a sequence of palace intrigue and gaffes, sprinkled with flavors of authoritarianism, incompetence, racism, and xenophobia. It’s exhausting to keep up with.

But there’s good news for those of us opposed to the racist and authoritarian impulses of Trumpism: Democrats did well. While 10 races remain undecided, Democrats walk away with 225 seats to the Republican’s 200. Republicans still control the Senate, but with the House of Representatives run by the majority Democrats there’s hope that the Trump-brand presidency will meet roadblocks on its path to make America the 1800s again, and that the administration (and Trump himself) will be held accountable for its actions.

Trump, with the instinct (or desperation) of a man who’s spent a lifetime leveraging wealth and power, saw the writing on the wall when Democrats took control of the House and thus leadership of all House committees.

The day after the election, Attorney General Jeff Sessions was ousted and Matthew Whitaker installed as acting attorney general.

Whitaker, it’s noted, has argued that special counsel Robert Mueller was close to crossing a red line in his investigation of Trump’s finances. Whether Sessions’ permanent replacement will be Whitaker or someone else, it’s likely that the Trump administration will select an attorney general more aggressively sympathetic to Trump’s view of the rule of law: He’s above it, and his enemies are under it. Get the popcorn (and maybe whatever your

choice of self-medication is), the next couple of years are gonna be a spectacle.

That said, one candidate who has polled successfully and has taken election races steadily across the country over recent years continued to make advances Tuesday night: good ol’ pakalolo.

Yup, Mary Jane won big Tuesday night, picking up recreational legalization in Michigan and legalization for medical use in Utah and Missouri. That makes a total of 33 states with medical cannabis laws, and 10 with legalized recreational use of the schedule I drug.

So, despite the fatiguing and head-spinning environment that is national politics, there were some victories, but it is clear that tremendous work exists at the state and local levels if we’re to ensure an equitable and prosperous future.

STATE Hawai‘i voters did their part resisting the Trump agenda, electing David Ige for a second term as governor and saying no to the charismatic and community-focused Andria Tupola.

For her faults which include reiterating job and housing-creator rhetoric to protect the interests of the wealthy, deflecting comments regarding Trump’s treatment of the press, and record of voting against bills that protect the right of womenin-crisis to information, Tupola played to Ige’s weaknesses in a way that hopefully highlights his shortcomings as points to address in his new term.

Tupola’s strategy to engage rural voters and listen to concerns is something we would like to see more of from candidates and state officials, and in days leading up to the election many posts came online from Native Hawaiians weighing the costs and benefits of voting for Tupola, who vocally opposed the Thirty Meter Telescope. The issue of public relations, leadership, and Native Hawaiian rights

are not known as Ige’s strengths, but here is one area that we hope Ige will step up to ensure that the indigenous people of this place are included in any decision making regarding a sacred place.

In state races for Maui seats there were no significant changes. State senators Roz Baker and J. Kalani English will continue to work at the state legislature, while state representatives Angus McKelvey, Lynn DeCoite, Kyle Yamashita, and Justin Woodson also return for another term. Troy Hashimoto and Tina Wildberger will round out Maui’s teamelect, replacing Joe Souki and Kaniela Ing, respectively. Overall, it is a good team, and one we hope will continue to work with Governor Ige in the fight for smart protections for the environment, sustainability, local food production, dedicated funding for teachers, and legalization of recreational and industrial cannabis.

LOCAL Mike Victorino won the mayor’s race as projected by many who saw his name recognition, campaign funding, and network insurmountable for challenger Elle Cochran. This was a blow to what has become known as the ‘Ohana Coalition, the slate of candidates backed by the Sustainable Action Fund for the Environment and identified for their prioritization of environmental issues and smart growth.

But Maui’s big news came out of the other nine county races. The historic election resulted in the first female-majority Maui County Council and a shift in the body’s political balance. Five of the nine ‘Ohana candidates for council won their races, giving the group a majority of the County Council. Of the group, Kelly King, Tamara Paltin, Shane Sinenci, Keani Rawlins-Fernandez, and Tasha Kama won their races. The remaining four seats will be filled by Yuki Lei Sugimura, Alice Lee, Mike Molina, and Riki Hokama.

The new majority is likely to have a significant impact on local politics for the two years to come, starting with the selection of the council chair in January. It’s this process that made Mike White such an imposing figure on the council over the last two years, cementing the “gang of five” that was seen as generally establishment and pro-development. Now, the ‘Ohana candidates will form the majority and likely cast the deciding vote for council chair,

a decision which will guide council agendas and decision making for the next two years (“Scary,” Councilmember Sugimura opined on KAOI radio during election night).

Kelly King, the only ‘Ohana candidate with experience as a councilmember, is seen as the likeliest successor to Mike White, a welcome change to those who are interested in smart growth and policies that ensure the preservation of Maui’s environment.

“My priorities are getting this collaboration to happen between these major corporations or developers that come into our community and try to push these projects on without talking to the immediate community surrounding where their projects are going,” King told me regarding her focus for the new term. “The community needs smart growth.Yes, affordable housing is important, but it needs to be planned in a smart way and it needs to be presented to the community in a way that the community sees it as a benefit and not a burden.”

King pointed to the $80 million Wailuku Civic Complex project, which recently was appropriated $40 million, and the County’s interest in purchasing parts of Wailuku Water Company as large items she would like to revisit if appointed chair. She added that it feels like the projects are being jammed through when they warrant longer and more thoughtful discussion under the future council.

For the most part, King said, her “priority as chair is transparency and participation of all parties across the stakeholder groups.”

“I’d also like to see more professionalism and have the directors of the departments be people who are educated and experienced in the areas they are supposed to have oversight over, and also have a spirit of customer service so they know that they’re there to serve the community and not vice versa,” King told me. “Overall, most people that I know don’t feel like we have that right now with the current administration.”

Indeed, one of the other surprises of the night was Alan Arakawa’s trouncing at the hands of opponent Tasha Kama, a result that many saw as a referendum on Arakawa’s management and actions as mayor over the last eight years. Facing a loss, Arakawa was found by a KITV news reporter at Mike Victorino’s election night party, where he unloaded on candidate Elle Cochran, calling her an “idiot” on statewide TV in a disgraceful moment of tactlessness. The comment made Alice Lee’s calls for civility on the county council, harkening back to the good old days, seem laughable.

But in a couple of months, Arakawa will enter retirement (unless selected for a county position) and those ugly comments will be behind us. A new council and a new mayor will lie ahead for Maui County, a future of smart growth and mana wahine. And with the pressures of a egomaniacal wannabe-strongman at the helm of our country, this is a welcome change and check on the forces of development and commodification that are squeezing this island and its people and culture.

Hale O Maui home in Kihei. This marks the second sale of the affordable Na Hale O Maui home. NHOM repurchased the home from the first homeowner, who received a portion of the shared appreciation, while keeping the home affordable for DeMott, the new homeowner.

DeMott struggled for years to find an affordable home for herself and her 7-year-old son. “I began looking when he was born,” she said. “I am very excited. I feel incredible overwhelming gratitude. I have a renewed faith in humanity. I can’t believe it!” DeMott has been teaching primarily science and math on Maui for 12 years.

Na Hale O Maui is made up of people in the community who are helping others in the community have a home, a place to feel proud of and have some roots, and a future. Na Hale O Maui is Hawai‘i’s first community land trust, a nonprofit organization helping to create affordable housing for Maui’s residents and to keep the housing affordable in perpetuity. NHOM uses the community land trust model to keep their homes affordable in perpetuity; NHOM owns the land and the homeowners own the improvements built on the land. The inaugural Maui Homestead Summit brought together approximately 100 farmers and lawmakers, who together discussed issues relevant to Hawaiian homesteaders and their neighboring communities – including the possibility of a state agricultural strategic plan and a homestead agriculture and ranching roundtable with legislators.

The purpose of the daylong event, held Nov. 3 at He Piko No Waiohuli community center at Waiohuli Hawaiian Homestead, was to engage, inform, and empower Hawaiian beneficiaries of the 1921 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act federal trust and inform and educate the community at large about agriculture and ranching-related topics. Also key to the event was the discussion of mutual rights, benefits, and kuleana responsibilities under the HHCA. The Upcountry nonprofit Pa‘upena Community Development Corp. hosted the summit, which featured a panel with Maui legislators Kyle Yamashita and Troy Hashimoto, Hawai‘i Farmers Union United President Vincent Mina, and Maui County Farm Bureau representatives Warren Watanabe and Mae Nakahata. In addition to discussing a state agriculture strategic plan, panelists explored the possibility of a homestead agriculture and ranching round table with legislators to be held before or during the 2019 legislative session.

Puanani Danner with the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations urged Maui to initiate its own bill for a state agricultural strategic plan; such proposed legislation “should come from Maui no ka ‘oi,” said the Anahola, Kaua‘i, homesteader.

“Hawaiians need to hear the important

messages that were shared,” said attendee Robert Masters of 808 Building Supplies & Solutions. Masters called the summit “a wonderful event… so educational.” The free event offered giveaways of taro shoots to plant, medicinal teas, a kalo tasting, and an evening pa‘ina (party) with food and entertainment.

Also during the summit, legislator Hashimoto introduced the concept of a Heritage Farming Families initiative, similar to the State Historic Sites program. “I look forward to working and speaking with you again in the future,” said Hashimoto, a member of the multigenerational Hashimoto persimmon-growing family in Kula.

Pa‘upena CDC co-sponsored the Maui Homestead Summit with the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations. Pa‘upena CDC’s mission is to provide resources and training to empower fellow Hawaiian Homes trust beneficiaries to build homes and selfsufficient communities.

On the heels of that success, ProArts Playhouse announced it is looking for submissions of plays written by local playwrights. For a play to be considered, it must be fully written at time of submission, and 60 minutes in length or longer (shorter one-acts will be considered, but production will depend on receipt of sufficient submissions to organize an evening of one-acts); musical plays may be considered with original sheet music to which the author has rights.

All plays must be written to conform with the theater’s physical space and production resources. ProArts is requesting a small cast size, six or fewer actors preferred. Multiple characters by actors is allowed but the space is too small for more than 10 actors.

Deadline for submissions is June 30, 2019. Notification of decisions will be sent no later than August 31, 2019. Announcement of accepted submissions will be made in September 2019 as part of the opening of our 2019-20 season.

This begs the question, why is Alexander and Baldwin allowed to continue diverting water from state lands if the company’s intent is to sell its agricultural holdings?

“I just wonder if the BLNR is really facilitating agriculture in the future or if they’re just facilitating a higher profit for a real estate transaction for this real estate investment trust called A&B,” Albert Perez said. “Here’s why: The land is worth much more with water. It’s really complicated, but the bottom line is that they already have plenty of water even without this water; they have over 50 million gallons just from lands they own in fee that are not in subject of the leases.”

The Sierra Club Hawai‘i verbally requested a contested case following the BLNR’s decision, citing a lack of information about A&B’s water usage and future land use plans.

“I keep hearing similar rumors and it’s not a surprise to me,” Maui Tomorrow Executive Director Albert Perez said. “[Alexander and Baldwin is] a real estate investment trust.

They are not an agricultural company. I never believed their plan they were presenting for the stream flow standards contested case; I never believed that was real and I testified to that effect. It’s not a plan. It’s more of a sketch, and they’re not making that much progress. So I’m not surprised at all.”

At the Nov. 9 meeting, the BLNR approved A&B’s request for a third holdover permit to continue water diversion of East Maui streams, with an amendment that included the formation of an “interim committee to discuss water usage issues in the license area.”

The committee will consist of five members representing Alexander & Baldwin, Farm Bureau, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, and the County of Maui, and will meet once a month for the

t is an early fall morning in Long Island, as orange and red colored leaves drift down to gather in piles along the empty streets, rustling from the gutters and sidewalks to gather in drifts against the row of tents set up outside the packed Walmart parking lot. The tent’s inhabitants crowd in front of the closed doors, sipping coffee, collars up and hats pulled low to protect from the morning chill.

As the 5 o’clock hour approaches, the tension in the crowd begins to rise. Those who had sacrificed their comfortable beds to camp out in front of the store glare

angrily at those who had just shown up, jockeying for position in front of the still locked doors, eyes glazed, shuffling closer and closer to the entrance until the crowd presses up against the glass, the frames creaking with the weight of hundreds, then thousands, of eager consumers itching to buy, and fill carts and baskets with the discounted goods just out of reach behind the glass.

4:55am. Five minutes before the planned opening, the crowd reaches critical mass and the doors collapse inward under the weight of the crowd.

They flood into the Walmart by the

hundreds, fueled by sleep deprivation and bargain hunting fervor, a tsunami of hysterical shoppers which completely overwhelms the blue-vested employees.

Jdimytai Damour, a Haitian immigrant known as “Jimbo” to his friends who had picked up the temporary job for a little extra cash for the holidays, is knocked over by the crowd and trampled, stepped on and over by shoppers rushing to get into the aisles and snag those great Black Friday deals. Emergency medical technicians who rush to his rescue are jostled and stepped on by the shoppers as well.

Damour was pronounced dead just after 6am. He died of asphyxiation, literally trampled to death. In the same stampede, three others were hospitalized, including a pregnant woman who suffered a miscarriage as she was knocked down by the crowd.

This was the Black Friday scene in 2008 in Valley Stream, New York, possibly one of the most brutal examples of the mass consumer hysteria that grips the country every day after Thanksgiving, on what’s become to be known as the busiest shopping day of the year. But it isn’t the only instance where the throngs of shoppers have become violent.

Buy Nothing Day

Buy Nothing Day is an alternative to the consumerism of Black Friday

That same day on the opposite side of the country in Palm Desert, California, a brawl inside a Toys “R” Us turned into a deadly shootout as two women and their husbands escalated an argument into a gun battle which left two dead. In 2011, at another Walmart in Los Angeles, a woman began pepper spraying her fellow shoppers in an act of “competitive shopping” to get to a display of heavily discounted Xbox games.

This tactic seems to have caught on; many similar reports have come out from different areas of the country over the years, as many consumers resort to brawling, stabbing, and shooting in order to snap up all those sweet deals. Just last year in Hoover, Alabama, multiple brawls broke out on Thanksgiving night at the Riverchase Galleria, causing authorities to shut down the entire shopping mall in an attempt to stop any further violence.

Black Friday can be traced back decades in the U.S., the day after Thanksgiving that many retailers look forward to as the beginning of Christmas shopping season, when sales go from the “red” solidly into the “black,” but the advertising blitz and hype has increased exponentially since the early 2000s, with stores opening their doors earlier and earlier, some even staying open all night after Thanksgiving to attract the attention of eager consumers waddling in, still digesting their turkey, marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

It’s not as if overconsumption of material goods is anything new in our culture. We’re constantly bombarded with advertisements for products that don’t just serve a useful function, they actually (if you believe the hype) make our lives better, more exciting, more entertaining and fulfilling. Advertising has gone from a picture of a toaster in a magazine to product placements in your favorite TV shows and movies, a sophisticated industry that now employs psychologists and neuroscientists to figure out the best way of influencing you to buy whatever product the company is trying to sell, from cheese puffs to cholesterol-reducing medication.

But advertising is just one facet of this consumer culture that’s become the norm in the United States and, now, the world, as transnational corporations push their

products across the globe. The push for profit above all else – above quality handmade goods, art, people, the natural world, the planet – has become so insidious that companies actually design products to break down and fall apart after a certain amount of time. This is known as “planned obsolescence,” and has been utilized by many different industries since the 1920s1930s as factory owners began to realize the assembly-line style of manufacturing was creating more products than people could afford to buy. Their solution? Design them to fail, so people would be forced to buy replacements.

On top of that, a recent trend has emerged of “perceived obsolescence,” exemplified by the fashion industry and the tech world, where the products themselves still function perfectly fine, but a new, faster, trendier version is released every few months to keep consumers scrambling to acquire the next best thing, only to discard it a few months later as the next version, the next fad, the next ground-breaking, life-changing innovation comes into style.

You know, like mom jeans or some new flavor of Doritos.

This constant push to consume isn’t anything new, but it’s becoming more widespread as heavily populated countries like India and China are seeing a growing middle class and a surging demand for the kind of material luxuries we in the United States take for granted. As the demand for goods increases, so does the need for raw materials, and the mining, logging, and extraction industries are scrambling to meet the demand. The problem, which is a much larger problem than just not having enough lithium for the batteries in your iPhone, is that if the level of consumption continues to increase at the current level, the Earth’s resources will not be able to sustain it.

Now that’s a very simplified explanation of a very complex problem, but there are a growing number of engineers, scientists, artists, and activists who are proposing different solutions to this very serious issue of overconsumption of our finite planet’s resources. One of the more creative and accessible examples of this was created by the artist Ted Dave in Vancouver, Canada, and subsequently promoted by Adbusters magazine, the same publication that gave rise to the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011.

Started in the late ‘90s in Canada, Buy Nothing Day is an annual day of actions and protests that occurs on Black Friday to draw attention to the destructive nature of this consumer culture and offer an alternative to the advertising, shopping, and mindless consumerism of the holidays.

From its roots in Canada, BND quickly spread to the U.S., U.K., Japan, Austria, Israel, and now includes participation in more than 65 countries worldwide.

The message is very simple, and anyone and everyone in the world is encouraged to participate. For 24 hours, go on a complete consumer fast and buy absolutely nothing.

That’s it. Some might think that’s easy, but really, it’s a bit more tricky than you’d think.

Do you have any debt that’s accruing interest? Stocks? Utilities? Automatic bills set up online? Can you really spend a whole day not buying or participating in the monetary system at all? Now, some of these examples are extreme and its next to impossible to just completely drop out of the entire capitalist system for 24 hours, but BND is about examining your lifestyle, recognizing the extent to which you as an individual participate in supporting this culture of overconsumption. Where does your money go? What do you spend it on? Is it necessary? If it is, where do you get it from?

What kind of business are you supporting with your hard-earned dollars?

Buy Nothing Day can be as simple as spending the day curled up on the couch with a good book (maybe Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff, Naomi Klein’s No Logo, or even a copy of Adbusters magazine?). Another common practice is to go for a hike: Spend the day out in nature and away from the crowds and hysteria of Black Friday. Others have used the nature of the crowded streets and shopping centers for other forms of protest.

The past years have seen a broad diversity of tactics all over the world in support of BND. Some of the more common activities include a “Zombie Walk,” where participants dress up and lurch en mass through crowded shopping areas satirizing the mindless consumerism, and “Credit Card Cutups,” where people draw attention to the predatory credit card industry by publicly cutting up their credit cards. More direct forms of action include forming a long line of carts and weaving through a store while buying absolutely nothing, or disrupting business as usual in other ways like sit-ins, lockdowns, blocking entrances. Others have

opted for more constructive, inclusive tactics like free street parties, or the Buy Nothing Coat Exchange started in Rhode Island, where winter coats are collected over the month and distributed on Black Friday/Buy Nothing Day to those in need.

From sticker campaigns to billboard reclamation, street theater to activists chaining themselves to the doors of designer clothing boutiques, BND is an event to draw attention to the consumer culture we live in however you see fit. As a decentralized, open source event, the possibilities for participation are limited only by your imagination, the only unifying theme is to, as Adbusters puts it, “curb your consumption,” even if only for 24 hours. If anything, it’s a chance to sit and reflect on this culture, contemplate the direction we’re headed, and maybe even think of ways we can change it for the better.

We live on a finite planet, in a country that consumes vastly more than we need to survive. While we complain about the lack of a headphone jack on the new iPhone, entire villages across Africa don’t have access to clean water. We wonder what gifts to buy people for Christmas while Yemeni children starve to death. This culture of consumption, of materialism, of profit is an incredibly privileged one, and incredibly unsustainable.

As we move forward into the uncertain future, it’s about time that all of us, as individuals, take a good hard look at the companies we support and the systems of debt and consumerism we perpetuate by our participation. The election may be over, but we vote with every dollar we spend.

Coming into the holidays, it’s good mindful of where those dollars go, especially here on the islands, where so much of what we spend goes to mainland companies and isn’t reinvested back into our communities. By shopping at locally owned stores, farmers markets, and craft fairs, we can help bolster the local economy and keep the money circulating here at home rather than having it leeched away, creating more demand for imported goods. As the saying goes: Think globally, shop locally.

Buy Nothing Day/Black Friday is a day to recognize that power that we hold as participants in this economy, and decide how we want to exercise it. Personally, I’m going to exercise it by buying nothing at all. Save the planet: Curb your consumption. ■

Augie T's Last Stand TALKING STORY WITH HAWAI‘I’S COMEDY LEGEND BEFORE HIS FINAL TOUR STOPS AT THE MACC And not only that, it’s super affordable.

I’ve always tried to give the people a super affordable show, and it’s clean. I’ve been working clean now for a long time. I want to encourage parents to bring their kids, let them laugh. Believe it or not, when I was in the fourth grade, my auntie brought me to the Maui War Memorial Stadium. My dad is from Maui. And I saw Andy Bumatai, and I was inspired and blown away and I knew I wanted to be a comedian. I was sitting there like, ‘That’s what I want to become! I want be a standup comedian.’ Not knowing that however many years later, not only would I be his opening act, but I would be recognized at the same level as him. Everything is full circle. How’s that?

LH: That’s a great story. And if you hadn’t been exposed to that, who knows, right?

AT: Yeah, and that’s why I want people to bring their family, come laugh together, you know?

LH: You’re known for your familyfriendly and clean humor.

Ahead of Friday’s show, I chatted with Augie T about his heart for comedy and service, his pre-comedy days as an ameteur boxer, what Mr. Miyagi taught him about comedy, and his potential future political aspirations.

Lantana Hoke: I understand this is your last tour, 'Last Stand.' How’s it been going?

ith classic, island-style humor, Augie T has been a mainstay of the Hawai‘i comedy scene for decades. This Friday, Augie T will take the stage at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center for his “Last Stand” event at the Castle Theater, with guests Daryl Bonilla and Jose Dynamite.

This event is a part of Augie’s final comedy tour. After 27 years of performing, the classic comedian is going out while still in his comedy prime. Augie has been a central figure in the local comedy revival, influenced by Hawai‘i’s comedy-great Rap Reiplinger and mentored by local comedian Andy Bumatai.

With local themes and an innocent and classic style, Augie T performs for a local audience who feels in on the joke.

With a litany of recognition and awards to his name, including two Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Comedy Album of the Year, Augie T is native to O‘ahu’s Kalihi Valley. The Filipino-Caucasian comic makes use of light teasing, falsetto, and pidgin for an endearing

Augie T: We just completed Las Vegas, a sell-out show; Hilo and Kona, same thing.

In Kona and Hilo, I got to perform with the guys who I was inspired by, so it was nice for them to come and finish up my last show with Frank Delima, Mel Cabang, and Andy Bumatai.

LH: Congratulations. In terms of your show, what should people expect?

AT: I’ve been telling people, if you want the best of Augie T, this is it right here.

There’s a bunch of new material, and of course, if I don’t do some of the fan favorites, people always ask. So what I try to do is take my DVDs recorded over the last 27 years and find the bits I really like, and mix it up with material I’ve been working on in the last seven to eight months, including the fake missile attack.

AT: When I first started out doing comedy, I was working at a bar in Kalihi, and Mr. Miyagi, you know Pat Morida? So Pat Morida used to go drinking at this place, and he saw my act, and he pulled me aside and said, ‘Maybe to express what you’re really feeling, maybe you should use bad words. Nobody going see you, only get like four people, and there’s a freeing effect to that.’ He said, ‘I think you’re holding back.’ So anyway, the bar was really dark, and I couldn’t see who was walking in. And my dad walked in.

And he saw me swearing and saying things I don’t usually say. And he walked on stage, it was so embarrassing because you get Pat Morida in the back just laughing, and my dad was scolding me on stage. I’m in my late 20s, and my dad is on stage lecturing me. They’re the only crowd that saw me swear in my act and at the same time get scoldings from my dad.

LH: That’s hilarious. So you’ve been ‘clean’ ever since.

AT: Yeah, because I never knew when my dad would show up. He’s the kind of guy that would walk on and give me lickins in front of everybody. Even at 50.

LH: So this is the last tour you’re going to be taking in Hawai‘i. Why? AT: This is it, it’s my final big show. I’ve been doing this for 27 years, and I want to step away and do new things, something I couldn’t do when I was a younger comic.

I’m going to go explore the mainland, even maybe possibly, down the line, run for public office.

LH: So, Mayor Augie T? AT: I see myself doing some kind of public service. The proceeds will go to a foundation my daughter created, and we go to

schools. It’s about anti-bullying, making the right choices, setting goals; on the Big Island, we do a drug and alcohol program. It’s called BRAVE Hawai‘i. BRAVE is an acronym: ‘Be Respectful And Value Everyone.’ My daughter started it when she was 11-years-old because she was bullied in schools. For the last couple of years, it’s been very gratifying for me to give back. I’ve been giving back in different ways, like making people laugh, for years, and it’s been so amazing helping out and watching my daughter’s program grow. For now, I’m going to help her focus on that.

LH: I think a rest is in order, and you’re a known name around here.

AT: For 27 years I’ve been burning the candle at both ends. A lot of people don’t know, I go to a day job, I do radio in the morning. For the last couple of years I’ve been working in public office, with the mayor on the Big Island and the Lieutenant Governor, and then at night I do my comedy. And on the weekends, I do a lot of private shows. So I might take a break, and regroup, and see what happens.

LH: I was reading your Wikipedia page, and it said you were on “Baywatch” and used to be a champion boxer.

AT: I knew Jason Momoa before he was Aquaman, when he first started out. Jason Momoa was a star of “Baywatch Hawai‘i,” like a beach boy, and that was a fun experience. And now he’s this big, huge star! And a lot of people don’t know that I had over a 147 amateur fights. I was ranked number 6 at one time in the world, and I had six professional fights. I won the 1985 championship in Hawai‘i. I got tired of getting hit in the face, so I decided to try stand-up.

That was a sport that really taught me discipline. I see boxing the same as comedy: You don’t know what to expect when the bell rings, and you’re by yourself in that ring or on that stage. It’s a lot easier bombing than getting knocked out. I bombed several times but I never got knocked out.

LH: What do you want people to know about you?

AT: My biggest thing is that I put my heart and soul every time I step on stage, because I’m thankful. And I say this with all sincerity, because I grew up in public housing. I grew up extremely poor, I was a teen parent, and I’ve had all these beautiful things happen to me. I’m thankful that for the last 27 years, I got to be expressive on stage, and hopefully brought joy to a lot of peoples’ lives. I think the biggest thing is that I’m very, very thankful.

'The Girl in the Spider's Web' Is Tangled This film has a lot going for it… except a good story ★★★★★

isbeth Salander is still at large. Known in some circles as “The Girl Who Hurts Men Who Hurt Women,” Salander is a brilliant online hacker, career criminal, and dark, elusive figure. Almost always attired in black and living a permanently transient existence, she is a ruthless enforcer of justice and a haunting presence.

I love this character and am disappointed that Salander’s story, which began in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, isn’t given the proper ending provided by the two additional sequels (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, all based on novels by the late Stieg Larsson) that were promised then dropped.

Adding further confusion is that the novels became a popular, if style-free, trilogy of Swedish films that showcased a phenomenal, breakout turn by Noomi Rapace as Salander. After that came David Fincher’s 2011 U.S. remake, with a superb Rooney Mara taking over Salander. Now, in the tradition of Marvel movies, the series has been “revamped,” and Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy remains incomplete in the U.S. with Salander now played by Claire Foy. Thankfully, Foy is excellent in the role and she’s backed by the direction of Fede Alvarez, the gifted filmmaker behind Don’t Breathe and the surprisingly great Evil Dead remake. The downside (and it’s a big one) is that The Girl in the Spider’s Web wasn’t written by Larsson but is based on the novel

lot going for it, except a good story.

After Salander’s latest assignment goes south, she winds up protecting a young boy who holds a crucial secret. Making matters worse is that a presence from Salander’s past returns to torment her (a key plot reveal that the film’s trailers have idiotically ruined).

Alvarez is following in Fincher’s footsteps but he’s more than up to the challenge, as the first act is full of cleverly designed sequences and arresting imagery. Alvarez has crafted a visual marvel, a feat matched by Foy’s bravura turn – somehow both vulnerable and ferocious. Yet, by the midpoint, the story lost my interest. Both the original Swedish and U.S. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo were built around a grand, intricate mystery; here, the story is, not unlike a spider’s web, sticky and clumsy.

In some ways, this suffers in comparison to Fincher’s film, as Sverrir Gudnason and Vicky Krieps, playing journalist Blomkvist and his boss and lover Erika Berger, are no match for Daniel Craig and Robin Wright.

Also, while Fincher’s film opened with a memorably disturbing title sequence, set to Trent Reznor’s take on “Immigrant Song,” this one fails to shock and mesmerize in the same way. Most importantly, the original had a real-world feel. Here, Salander is Batman in a Jason Bourne world. Because the tone is nearly in line with a James Bond reality, the sense of danger is gone.

There are lots of rousing moments (like a bird’s eye view of a villain’s comeuppance) but the story is too far-fetched and redundant to fully invest in.

Foy has given Salander more of an aching

center than either of her predecessors but both Rapace and Mara had better screenplays to work with. While the latest in this series thankfully dials down the rape scenes, there’s still a lot of perverse imagery and exploitative qualities that, for better or worse, keep it consistent with the prior entries.

Fincher’s film was accused of being an indifferent, mainstream project. Actually, his Dragon Tattoo is rich, somber, and elegant, falling just short of greatness. By contrast, Spider’s Web starts off strong and gradually fades.

If anything, it has a few things in common with last week’s Bohemian Rhapsody: despite a wonderful lead performance and scenes that work, it’s passable entertainment at best.

Foy’s work, as well as the cinematography and score, are standouts and Alvarez gives this lots of flash but the web is tangled. ■

Your intentions are the best (“I don’t want you to fall over and hurt yourself!”), but in this case it might be better to trust, and accept that you might be setting someone up for a painful lesson or two. Sometimes, that’s the only way to learn.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Things take time. Fortunately you can often predict how much time they’ll require; for example, when you break a bone, the doctor can tell you roughly how long it’ll need to be in a cast. You can plan around it. What’s screwing you over is you’re either ignoring or forgetting those timetables, and essentially scheduling a soccer game for the week after you break your leg. It doesn’t take a prophet to guess what you’ll be up for, and when. Stop trying to do shit too soon. Give yourself the time you realistically need to actually be ready for them.

Being entitled and selfish is ugly and despicable.
