Bardellini is now being advised by a CPA and receiving counsel from attorney Shawn Luiz, who is also representing Trinette Furtado and Alika Atay in the absence of conflict counsel. “I urge all government officials and their staff to cease and desist from using the news as a vehicle to spread false and defamatory statements regarding my clients,” Luiz said in a written statement to the Budget and Finance Committee, adding, “The County is now officially on notice for potential liability that could result in tort claims.”

Atay filed a motion to enter an executive session at the committee meeting to sort out details in a closed meeting. Committee Chair Riki Hokama denied the motion, so expect to hear more of this soon.

Mayor Arakawa unleashed the latest salvo on Oct. 25, filing an ethics complaint against Atay for sending a statement regarding the grant en-masse over the county email system. “In the complaint, Arakawa wrote that Atay made unfounded allegations against numerous people including himself,” reported the Maui News, adding “He argued that Atay violated county law by using email addresses in the county email system, which were acquired in the course of his official duties, and sent out the mass email for his personal gain.” Atay defended himself on Facebook citing his right to freedom of speech.

MHS is also asking the community for help when it comes to bringing cats and critters to the shelter, including strays and owner surrenders. Space at the shelter is extremely tight during renovations and there are a limited number of foster homes available. These spots must be reserved for animals that have zero other options for temporary or permanent homes.

MHS is asking anyone who finds a stray cat to call the shelter to arrange a time for the animal to be brought in during normal business hours. If you need to surrender your own cat or critter, call MHS at (808) 877-3680 ext. 3 for assistance.

Potential pet parents can visit the MHS website at Mauihumanesociety.org to see all adoptable cats and critters. If you are interested in a specific animal, call the shelter to confirm that they are available as some may be in foster homes during this time. MHS also has adoptable cats and kittens available at the Petco in Kahului; the special $5 promotion is honored at Petco.

AHAPUA‘A SIGN GOES UP

In an effort to provide a more peaceful experience for Haleakala National Park’s visitors (and to save money), the National Park Service is implementing a new wood locker system for backcountry cabin users. The new system is expected to reduce helicopter traffic, noise, and impacts to wildlife and visitors.

Beginning Nov. 1, each of the park’s three cabins will be equipped with 18 lockers and each locker will contain three logs. These logs will be stocked regularly

by NPS rangers using mules.

The Kula Makai Sign Project, aimed to raise awareness about Hawai‘i’s ancient land division system, will soon allow Maui residents to have a better understanding of the historical relevance of their neighborhoods. As part of the program, signs are in the process of being installed along South Maui’s roadways indicating which ahupua‘a and moku people are passing through. The first sign was installed following a blessing and groundbreaking before more than 100 Maui residents on Oct. 26 at Kenolio Park. While the initial signs are limited to Kula Kai area only, the long-term vision is to create and install signs for all 12 moku.

The concept of private property was unknown to ancient Hawaiians, but they did follow a complex system of land division. All land was controlled ultimately by the highest chief or king who held it in trust for the whole population. Each island was divided in smaller parts, called moku, the largest units within each island which were usually wedge-shaped and ran from the mountain crest to shore.

Each moku was divided into ahupua‘a, narrower wedge-shaped land sections that also ran from the mountains to the sea. The size of each ahupua‘a – a large, traditional socioeconomic, geologic, and climatic subdivision of land – depended on the resources of the area; poorer agricultural regions were split into larger ahupua‘a to compensate for the relative lack of natural abundance. Ahupua‘a also varied in size

depending on the economic means of the location and political divisions of the area.

Each ahupua‘a was ruled by an ali‘i and included a lowland mala (cultivated area) and upland forested region.

The Kula Makai Sign Project is a cultural heritage program funded by the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. It was designed to bring awareness and revitalize the traditional Hawaiian names of the ahupua‘a within the Moku of Kula, more specifically to Kula Kai (now known as Kihei or South Maui).

“Now that the sign project is on its journey eventually the entire Maui will have signs if the moku(s) chooses to,” said Vernon Kalanikau, the overall coordinator of this project. “The initial intent and purpose of the signs is to acknowledge, honor, preserve, educate and to stand and be proud as kanaka maoli.”

Haleakala’s new wood lockers will promote responsible use of firewood, ensure that all visitors have three logs per night, and will reduce noise pollution and wildlife disturbance in the crater, which is congressionally designated wilderness and world famous for being one of the quietest places on Earth.

In 2018, the NPS spent an estimated $139,700 to deliver logs to cabins. That system required 26 hours of helicopter sound, exhaust, and activity in the crater.

Few, if any, other national parks provide wood burning stoves and logs to backcountry visitors.

The new locker system should reduce costs significantly, with savings reallocated to maintaining and improving backcountry visitor services, according to the NPS. Helicopter operations will still be required in the crater for emergency searches-andrescues, as well as resource protection operations, but will likely be reduced by at least 50 percent.

Locker combinations will be assigned and issued by park staff (one locker combination per night) at the time of check-in for cabin permits at Headquarters Visitor Center (at 7,000 ft. elevation) in the summit district. Any visitors wanting to pack in more wood can purchase additional logs and fire starters at the gift store during check in.

HELP CATS AND CRITTERS MOVE OUT FOR MAUI HUMANE SOCIETY RENOVATIONS The Maui Humane Society began renovations on the cat building and critter corner on Oct. 29, with construction expected to last approximately two weeks.

News Of The Weird YOU CAN’T SAY HE WASN’T WARNED Some people can get pretty territorial about their food. So it appeared in Colleton County, South Carolina, on Sept. 29, when Ryan Dean Langdale, 19, warned his 17-year-old cousin not to eat his salt and vinegar potato chips.

“Do not touch my chips, or I’ll shoot you,” Langdale told his cousin, according to a sheriff’s incident report. The Charleston Post and Courier reported Langdale then went into another room, retrieved a rifle and “the rifle went off,” according to the sheriff’s document. Langdale summoned help but told police his cousin had accidentally shot himself while cleaning the rifle. Officers didn’t think the story held up: The pathway of the bullet through the victim’s chest was “impossible” if he had mistakenly shot himself, said sheriff’s Maj. J.W. Chapman. Sure enough, when the victim was questioned after undergoing surgery, he told officers the savory snacks were at the center of the dispute. Langdale surrendered on Oct. 10 and was charged with, among other crimes, attempted murder.

JUST KIDDING An alert (or nosy) passerby called police on Oct. 10 after seeing staff through the window of a Natwest bank in Birmingham, England, hiding and cowering under their desks. Officers arrived at the bank in hopes of catching a robber red-handed, but instead were told the workers were participating in a team-building game of hide-and-seek.

West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Dave Keen tweeted that, although the incident was a misunderstanding, the citizen made “the right call,” reported Metro News.

WEIRD SCIENCE In Olympic National Park in Washington, the mountain goat population has baaallooned to an unnatural 700 or more animals.

The park is also becoming more popular with humans, which has led to an unsavory consequence: In their constant quest for salt and other minerals, the goats have developed a strong taste for human urine and sweat left behind by hikers and campers. Goats will lick clothing and paw at the ground where people have urinated or disposed of cooking water, making them a nuisance, according to the National Park Service. Popular Mechanics also reports that the increased likelihood of human-goat interactions has park officials worried, especially since a goat gored a hiker to death in 2010. The answer: Park officials are tagging, blindfolding, and airlifting mountain goats to nearby Mount BakerSnoqualmie National Forest, which should be more hospitable to their needs.

SMOOTH REACTION On Oct. 12, an Air India Express pilot guided a Boeing 737 up and away from Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu, India – but not ENOUGH up and away. As the plane took off shortly after midnight, it hit the top of a 5-foot-tall pe-

rimeter wall and destroyed a small landing guide tower. The Washington Post reported that, despite the audible collision, the pilot told the airport director the plane’s systems were functioning normally and he was continuing toward Dubai, across the Indian Ocean. “But we found some parts of the plane, like an antenna, on the ground,” the director said. Finally, about two hours into the flight, ground control convinced the pilot to return to India, where the plane landed in Mumbai. Indeed, there was a huge gash in the plane’s underbelly, and mesh fencing was wrapped around the landing gear. All 130 passengers arrived unharmed and were booked on other flights, and the pilot and co-pilot have been grounded pending a review.

QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENT Hatam Hamad, 56, a Palestinian and American dual citizen, made a name for himself on Oct. 10 as he flew from New Orleans to Heathrow Airport in London, reported Fox News. Six hours into the flight, after swigging five servings of wine, Hamad approached New Orleans TV executive Joel Vilmenay, who was sitting with his wife and two children. “This man had his penis out and exposed within 3 inches of my face,” Vilmenay said in his statement to the Uxbridge Magistrates Court prosecutor, Wendy Barrett. Vilmenay said he stood up and asked Hamad what he was doing, whereupon Hamad “responded by grunting” and exposed himself to another passenger. At that moment, Hamad “slapped (Vilmenay) in the chest with some force.” The cabin crew were alerted, and Hamad was removed to the back of the plane, where he was guarded for the remainder of the flight. Hamad, who has no previous convictions, at first denied having assaulted anyone, but later admitted his guilt, saying he had not drunk alcohol for three months but was a nervous flyer. His prison sentence was suspended, but he was ordered to pay Vilmenay $789.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS In an apparent attempt to destroy what little brainpower he had left, 26-year-old Brandon McVay of Council Bluffs, Iowa, ate a Tide Pod, prompting a trip to the hospital. But while he was being treated in the critical care unit, McVay went on a rampage early on Oct. 4, causing thousands of dollars of damage to medical equipment, according to the Omaha World-Herald. A nurse told the responding police officer that McVay “was yelling loudly” as he broke objects in his room before proceeding to the hallway. Keyboards, computer monitors, and glass valued at more than $7,500 were found littering the hallway, where McVay was subdued by security before police arrived. McVay was arrested and held at the hospital on charges of second-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct in a place of business. ■

M

aybe you’ve seen it on social media, on a car bumper, or stuck to some roadside guardrail, but wherever you saw it first, the words are everywhere this election season: huli. Huli means to turn or change, and who can blame citizens for wanting to flip course?

Maui residents are facing monumental issues determining the future of our island, from high costs of living, to a diminishing quality of life; from young people leaving the island for better opportunities, to development and tourism – and that’s barely scratching the surface.

Nationally, things look even messier and the 24-hour news cycle, for all its access to information, does little to calm the chaos. The result becomes fatigue rather than civic engagement, and the fundamental issues become lost on the course to partisan bickering.

So I agree with the bumper sticker: We need to huli the direction we are headed in as a collective species – for our planet and for our keiki. But what

does it mean to huli the system? Will voting in the right candidates be enough to flip the script? Is it enough to simply change the faces?

Obviously, different elected officials will lead to different policies (and that’s significant), but the true huli isn’t a fresh slate of figureheads – to huli the system requires people power.

Only then, when the power is flipped so the voices of the people are at the top and elected officials serve citizens, will we truly have a system that wen’ huli and best reflects the interests of our community rather than rich donors or self-interested politicians.

So if the system isn’t working for you, here’s step one: vote. Or even better: Read this, then vote.

MAYOR Elle Cochran Elle Cochran got her start in politics as an activist fighting for the preservation of Honolua Bay. Mike Victorino, on the other hand, supported a request

by Maui Land & Pineapple Company to remove Lipoa Point from preservation.

There’s your line in the sand.

Victorino, while certainly a nice guy, doesn’t embody the vision of Maui we would like to see. A constant theme of his campaign has been his success raising money, and Victorino is proud to say things like “I take money from everybody.” When running a business this might be great, but when it comes to our home, Maui, we question the kinds of deals he would make and the vision of balance he has for our community. His record shows significant campaign contributions from off-island, supporting removing land from preservation, and rezoning acres to accommodate luxury home developments.

We didn’t want it then, and we do not need more of that now.

Cochran has shown herself to have the political courage and vision needed in times like these. While Elle is unproven as an executive, Cochran’s leadership as an activist reflects a concern for people and willingness to listen – whether on a picket line or at a demonstration outside the County Building. When it comes to issues she got wrong, such as the increase of park fees in the latest budget, Cochran has done the difficult thing that is the mark of a leader: She admitted her mistake and took steps to correct it.

Obviously, we hope that Elle brings diligence, thoughtfulness, and research to the mayor’s office, but in a political environment where demagogues bully the truth in order to win, it is refreshing to see a politician do what is right for the community, ego aside.

Plus, vision goes a long way. Cochran has consistently kept the issues of affordable housing, environmental protection, and cost of living at the top of her platform. She has been vocal when it comes to addressing the the costs of tourism on our island, reallocating funds from tourism marketing to management, and supporting workers trying to make a living wage. These are conversations that we desperately need to have, and we think that with Elle as mayor the potential for discussion and progress on these fronts is bright.

GOVERNOR David Ige For our few issues with Governor Ige which include his lackluster public relations, the false missile alert, and opposition to the legalization of can-

nabis, there are some areas where his leadership has caused marked progress.

Most significantly, the state’s ambitious goal to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2045 has put Hawai‘i on the map as a leader in addressing the tremendous global issue of climate change and sustainability. Under Ige, Hawai‘i began the Sustainable Hawai‘i Initiative, which sets a number of other goals including a 100 percent increase in local agriculture production by 2020 and increased protection of watersheds and nearshore marine areas. Along with the chlorpyrifos ban signed earlier this year, we see an administration committed to to preserving the environment and public health.

Additionally, Ige has voiced support for increasing the minimum wage and finding dedicated revenue sources education, and through his attorney general challenged Trump’s travel ban. These are good choices for the state, and we’re not convinced that Tupola would continue the progress made by the Ige administration. Still, Tupola offers appealing traits. The possibility to elect a Native Hawaiian, female voice to the role of governor who is personable and committed to engaging rural communities is indeed tempting, but some of Tupola’s positions can’t be ignored.

First, we question any Republican’s willingness to identify with a party that is regularly exposed to have lost a principled platform, and complies with the most bankrupt person in politics, Donald Trump. We question Tupola’s will to challenge Trump when his choices reach extremes that require resistance. In a recent debate, Tupola fell short of a definitive condemnation

of Trump’s attacks on the press. Instead of reaffirming the necessity of the free press, she shied from renouncing Trump and said that we all have to take responsibility for the divisive environment be accountable for our words and actions. Wrong answer.

Tupola also did not vote on a bill to require gun owners to register in a database, and voted against legislation that required pregnancy centers to disclose all options to women in crisis.

Tupola has further opposed taxes with tired job creator and landlord-protection arguments, while questioning unfunded state liabilities. The untold consequence to this kind of rhetoric is either magic thinking that believes we can fund the state without look-

ing at progressive forms of income, or the slashing of social programs in the name of needed austerity.

Yet, for all her “small government” talk, Tupola is on record opposing medical marijuana dispensaries and the legalization of recreational cannabis, justifying prohibition and the failed War on Drugs with stories about

the damage drugs are doing to our communities. Enough of this 1970sera rhetoric already.

For his part, Ige opposes legalization of recreational cannabis based on wanting consistency between federal and state laws, an argument that doesn’t hold up considering that under federal law, any use (including medical, excluding FDA-approved research) of cannabis should be prohibited.

Maybe it’s a sign he’s willing to be swayed. We find this, the false missile alert, and weak public relations to be blemishes on Ige’s record, but we remain mostly hopeful that another four years in office will show that he has learned from shortcomings in his first term and is willing to build upon the progressive reforms we and his many voters endorse him for.

Tulsi Gabbard We have reservations about Rep. Gabbard, including her political ambitions and unwillingness to debate primary opponents. But for her faults, which we will continue to watch

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER WAILUKU-WAIHE‘EWAIKAPU

Alika Atay Atay has been the subject of a lot of bad press over the past year, from allegations of violent behavior from his assistant to recent challenges to the way his staff handled grant funds.

At this point, however, we don’t think there’s enough evidence to say that his behavior could be qualified as to his family. In addition to showing he has the passion to pursue justice in drawn-out battles, Kapu has made this experience a key part of his platform to extend resources to Hawaiians so they can reclaim land that is rightfully theirs. He has also prioritized affordable housing for Hawaiians who don’t make the blood quantum level required by Hawaiian Home Lands, and has been articulate in explaining how Native Hawaiian issues affect all Maui residents. The idea of Ke‘eaumoku Kapu in a greater leadership role where he can continue his work is a good one, so we support his bid for Maui trustee.

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER KAHULUI

Tasha Kama Kama is running against Alan Arakawa, and it’s time for a change. Plans like the Wailuku Civic Center, which Arakawa tried to insert into the latest budget at $80 million, are not the kinds of ideas we want to see more of. We’re also tired of his clumsy topdown management, like the countyclosely, we recognize that she has been a consistent voice for progressive causes including criminal justice reform, ending U.S. interventionism, campaign finance reform, and the legalization of cannabis. In the future, we would like to see Tulsi unscripted – in town halls with live questions, debates with primary challengers, and, yeah, walking story with us down Market Street. Participating in these kinds of public debates and appearances is fundamental to democracy and her role as elected official, and we hope she steps up.

OHA MAUI TRUSTEE Ke‘eaumoku Kapu We are making one endorsement for Office of Hawaiian Affairs elections, and it is for Ke‘eaumoku Kapu.

Kapu has made himself known in the community and on the island for his constant support for issues concerning Native Hawaiians and the environment. Notably, Kapu was successful in a title dispute that lasted almost 17 years and resulted in the return of land

Tamara Paltin Paltin’s passion for the environment and a place she loved, Honolua Bay, took her from an average county worker, to someone who questioned malfeasance or criminal negligence.

Atay has prioritized the values of aloha ‘aina with regards to his work as the chair of the Water Resource Committee, stressing the fundamental importance of water for the environment, cultural preservation, and the health and safety of Maui’s citizens.

Atay also had the will to vote against an amendment to the latest budget which undid progressive tax rates proposed by Mayor Arakawa (the tiered taxes would have lowered rates for homes valued less than $500,000 and increased rates for properties over $1.5 million, maintaining rates for properties in between). Before we start resurrecting past councilmembers who have termed out of council seats, we think Atay deserves more time to see his work through.

Sinenci, on the other hand, has worked with the ‘Aha Moku Council, a cultural resource management entity within DLNR, and is a longtime public school teacher. Sinenci has been unafraid to talk about the bigger picture and future of Maui County, even when it comes to the scary realities of population growth and carrying capacity. We need more discussion on these big issues so we can plan for the people that call this place home and their keiki.

Gabe Johnson Johnson is running against Riki Hokama, an establishment politician and veteran of the system. Still, for all that experience, Hokama had one of the worst attendance records of all councilmembers in 2018 and only $200 of his $28,200 of his campaign contributions in the primary reporting period came from Maui County – the rest were from off-island or mainland sources. I guess that’s what establishment will get you.

Kelly King King has been a level-headed member of the council advocating for slow growth and environmental concerns.

Along with Atay and Cochran, King voted against the budget amendment that removed progressive tiered tax rates, something we give her credit for despite the fact that the amendment passed with a majority of votes. With pressing concerns in the county including how to address sea level rise and development, we are grateful to have a thoughtful voice on the council to advocate for sensible environmentalism and governance.

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER MAKAWAO-HA‘IKU-PA‘IA

Trinette Furtado In this debate over whether to recycle an old councilmember or inject new blood into the system, we take the latter option. But it’s not just for

taxes, boldly addressing the growing burdens of tourism, or using county incentives to subsidize housing to level the playing field for Maui’s working class, Furtado represents an alternative to the kinds of pro-luxury development choices that have landed Maui’s residents in the crises faced today. We want more representatives who are willing to boldly shift the priorities of the county from tourism to community.

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER UPCOUNTRY

Hannibal Starbuck Yuki Lei Sugimura, Starbuck’s opponent, is nice and active in the community. However, we take issue with aspects of her record. Her first move as councilmember was to side with the pro-development and establishment wing of the county council and support Mike White as chair of the council. Later, she voted against the mora-

torium on the mining of inland sand in Central Maui twice (the original bill and its extension).

With Central Maui sand mining likely to be a future issue along with a number of development projects, we would like to see Starbuck on the council to make the decisions that Sugimura would not.

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER MOLOKA‘I

Keani Rawlins-Fernandez Aside from aligning herself with the pro-development members of the council and supporting the reign of council chair Mike White, Crivello hasn’t done much to shake the boat and draw our criticism. However, it’s this lack of clear vision that makes us curious about the potential for a new voice in the Moloka‘i seat.

Indeed, when Crivello told us the county budget was balanced “awe-

This is concerning, considering her votes to continue A&B water diversion from East Maui streams and the fact that a number agrochemical regulations have been weakened when passing through her Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Health.

Mish Shishido, her Green Party opponent, brings a platform to answer these concerns, but we haven’t seen enough of her to endorse her for this position. We predict that Baker will win, but hope Roz knows that Maui County has put her on notice for her ties to big business. Her margin of victory in the primary over Terez Amato was 106 votes – less than half of the amount of blank votes for her race. If Baker hopes to stay in politics, she should listen to the people who voted for her opponent and place greater consideration on items that concern her constituents.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DIST. 10

Angus McKelvey Jen Mather, McKelvey’s Green Party opponent, made a compelling argument in her Walk Story. “We’re polar opposites at our core. I’m a woman, a kanaka maoli, a mother, and a low income earner with a degree,” she said.

“At our core we’re very different, and that frames how we look at the world, it frames our paradigm. It frames access as well, of who we’re able to to encounter,

Keani Rawlins-Fernandez has these qualities. A young, smart, experienced, and active candidate, Keani has a background that makes us confident in both her beliefs and abilities to find solutions to the problems facing the community. She also brought attention to the need to preserve the subsistence economy on Moloka‘i. These are both conversations we’d love to have, and Keani is a candidate that we’d love to hear more from.

This is meaningful, especially at a time when including marginalized people in the political process is essential to progress. However, this is not enough of an argument for us to endorse unseating Angus McKelvey. McKelvey has worked on the preservation of Lipoa Point, has worked and is working on progressing the state’s cannabis laws, and has steadily supported finding revenue sources to fund education. He has talked about solutions to make life more affordable to residents, and prioritizes managed shoreline retreat. These are all issues we would like to see him continue to advance at the state capitol.

Lynn DeCoite After endorsing Lynn DeCoite in the primary election, we received feedback from readers who were disappointed in the fact that we endorsed a “GMO farmer.” Well, here’s the thing: DeCoite is the only farmer serving as a state legislator.

So, while it would be nice to endorse an organic farmer, we recognize the unique opportunity to have a farmer represent the largely rural areas of Moloka‘i, Lana‘i, and East Maui. Nikhilananda, her Green Party opponent, is known in pockets of

the community and for having run for office many times, but has little actual experience to show for it. Instead, the Green Party Maui, which he has been a longtime member of, continues to lack an organized presence on Maui.

Recently, DeCoite made the news by calling for increased funds for the Department of Agriculture and suggesting money be diverted from tourism to agriculture. We agree that there is a serious need for locally grown food, sustainability, and food sovereignty, and we hope that DeCoite, as a farmer, will continue to be a strong voice to promote this initiative.

BALLOT QUESTIONS Relating to a Constitutional Convention

NO The best argument for a constitutional convention is that, with the election of numerous delegates, more people are drawn into the political process. However, the ‘70s were a different time, and at this point I’m not sure we’d make it alive through the extended election season that a con-con would turn into. Plus, given our divisive environment, low political engagement, and influence of wealth, the potential for harm outweighs any good.

County Charter Amendment Relating to Claims

NO This charter amendment would require personal injury or property damage claims against the county to be filed directly with corporation counsel, rather than with the county clerk. Although the ballot question was supported on the grounds of eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies, the office of the county clerk is uniquely positioned to process these claims as a body serving the council, county departments, and the public.

Corporation counsel supports the county government, period. Sometimes redundancy helps to ensure integrity, so we’re going to be cynics about this one even if it means a few extra emails get bounced around in the county system.

County Charter Amendment Relating to Penalties

YES While we still await the results of the third-party analysis of the number of illegal short-term rentals on the island, it’s clear that we’re in a housing crisis.

A recent study found that one in three homes in Lahaina is a vacation rental, and most of them are owned by people from the mainland. Our concern with this proposed increase in penalties for illegal transient accommodations to a

severe $20,000 plus $10,000 a day is that it would hurt local families trying to make some money by renting extra space. But, at this point, research shows that this narrative of aunty renting out her spare bedroom to backpackers is not the norm, and most vacation rentals are whole-home rentals. What’s more, it’s hard to plead ignorance on this issue which has become at the forefront of state debates on affordable housing.

Higher penalties give enforcement some teeth, and ensures renters pay appropriate licencing fees and taxes while regulations on land use are followed.

County Charter Amendment Relating to Open Space Fund

NO This amendment would allow the Open Space Fund, which is dedicated to land acquisition, to be used for safety and security improvements on land acquired through the fund. These improvements are important, but so are land acquisitions for the preservation of significant sites. his Saturday, from 9am-12pm, 1,000 native trees will be given away during Maui’s 15th Annual Arbor day. Hosted by the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, in partnership with Hawaiian Electric Company and Arbor Day Hawai‘i, the

event will also feature other happenings for tree-lovers and the environmentally minded, like hands-on Hawaiian cultural activities as well as appearances by conservation organizations.

Maui master gardeners from the University of Hawai‘i Cooperative Extension will be on hand to help attendees find a tree or shrub that grows well where they are hoping to plant it. Tree enthusiasts will also be able to pick the brains of certified arborists, who will answer questions about tree care and management, and give advice.

In addition to the personalized help, many local nonprofit conservation groups will be there, and residents will get a chance to learn how they can be more involved in Maui’s conservation community. Participants will also get an opportunity to make traditional Hawaiian products like toys, tools, and household items from the leaves, fruit, and bark of native trees.

Arbor Day is a worldwide celebration of trees, an official holiday created to promote, honor, and plant trees in this era when we so desperately need them. In Hawai‘i, Arbor Day coincides with the beginning of the rainy season, which makes for a great opportunity to plant and nurture a tree through the wet months ahead. Planting natives, especially, not only spruces up your yard, but it can also help with some of our pressing losses in diversity on an island where biodiversity is one of our biggest assets.

As we are all pretty aware of by now, the environmental situation is dire, as underscored by a new report that we’ve had a horrifying 60 percent decline in the populations of wildlife in just the past 40 years. Humans tend to be really, really bad for other species. Biodiversity isn’t just nice to have, it’s essential to our survival on this planet. It’s hard to know where to start to help this disheartening situation, but small actions do matter. In order to to do something about it at the policy level, we’ve got to care at the personal level. Planting a native tree in your backyard is symbolic as well as an actual way to signify care.

So, go and get yourself a tree. The event will feature a variety of native trees and shrubs fit for all the varied climates of Maui. As plant lovers know, native trees are of special significance, especially in our isolated archipelago which

gave rise to unique endemic species. They are also beautiful and interesting plants that will enhance any landscape. The good people who care about these things will be giving out a large variety of native plants, with well known mainstays like wiliwili, hala, ‘ohi‘a lehua, and koa on hand alongside many less common trees and shrubs. Some of the free plants will include endangered species like koki‘o ‘ula‘ula, the beautiful red hibiscus and the nanu, a flowering forest gardenia of the coffee family. First-come, first serve, so get there early.

Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is host to many events throughout the year, including the Ulu Festival and various workshops, like dye and kapa making, in keeping with their mission to promote native plants and cultural heritage.

'Mid90s' Jonah Hill calls in favors for his directorial debut, but asks the most of the audience ★★★★★ Rated R / 85 Min.

omic and dramatic actor Jonah Hill’s Mid90s is his debut as a writer and director, a depiction of a deeply troubled childhood amidst the Clinton era. While a young cast performs well enough, there’s little here to suggest Hill learned anything while working for pros like Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant, or the Coen brothers. In fact, good luck even remembering this movie a week later.

Sunny Suljic is impressive playing Stevie, a sweet young boy who is viciously abused by his older brother and falls in with a crew of skaters, whose influence on him is especially negative. While the leader of the crew (well played by Na-Kel Smith) has a big brotherlike relationship with Stevie, the others mostly allow their drinking and skating lifestyles to wash over him.

Hill’s talent as a character actor continues to impress, as he’s racked up two Oscar nominations in recent years for Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street. Behind the camera, he’s clearly enamored with recreating a lost decade but shows little finesse of any kind as a filmmaker. If anything, Mid90s demonstrates how Hill saw Kids and every other awful Larry Clark and Harmony Korine flick like the rest of us. This is Kids-lite, a facsimile of down and dirty indie filmmaking that doesn’t have a voice or a clear point to make.

As far as sporting a 90’s identity, Stevie has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bed sheets, wears a “Ren and Stimpy” t-shirt and listens to music on a Walkman. A stronger connection is how this is plays like one of those off-putting, stardriven bummers from that decade, like Joe The King or Niagra, Niagra, that no one ever watches more than once, tops. This could have

been set in any year, as the details of Stevie’s life are overly familiar and unsurprising.

As a portrait of poor kids acting out and exploring the possibilities rebellion, away from the view of their parents, the recent The Florida Project does all of this so much better. Some of the skating stunts are impressive but there’s little here that you can’t find in a halfway decent YouTube video. One of the best scenes involves Stevie’s losing his virginity at a party: the build-up and result of the scene feels genuine. The most authentic sequence overall is the short film-within-thefilm that plays before the end credits, which has an energy the rest lacks.

There’s an onslaught of racist and homophobic slurs, a distancing approach that doesn’t automatically equate to historic accuracy. In addition to the non-stop ugliness,

the dialog is banal and none of the characters are fully formed. It doesn’t mean anything that Stevie betrays his mother’s trust, as the character is, at best, barely established.

Despite Hill’s already impressive body of work, this is a misstep, though a minor one.

Mid90s makes so little an impression, Hill can either embrace a potential cult following or permanently push it under a rug and forget about it. It’s that kind of risk-free enterprise, a passionless pet project. I suspect many scenes were improvised (as many feel made up on the spot) and that either Stevie or his awful brother have autobiographical elements from Hill’s life. Unfortunately, Mid90s is so poorly held together, I could care less how much of it really happened.

This is a favor movie, the kind of low budget drama that, despite the no-frills

filmmaking, is loaded with expensive period music. There’s also the visual nods to Hill’s former collaborators, as characters are seen viewing Goodfellas (a tribute to Hill’s The Wolf of Wall Street director), adorning a Leonardo DiCaprio poster (Hill’s ode to his famous co-star), and even listening to Ginuwine’s “Pony” (a likely shout out to frequent collaborator Channing Tatum).

Then there’s Katherine Waterston and Lucas Hedges, both exceptional, up-and-coming performers who give this credibility, in roles that won’t do anything to further their careers. For all the favors Hill called in, I feel like the biggest, unwarranted favor he asks is of his audience: Why would anyone see this, let alone sit through it? I’ve seen worse films this year but this one had me begging for its 85-minute running time to mercifully end. ■

KEPA LIMA WORKSHOP - Sun. Nov 4. Created from the tooth of the great white shark or cow bone, and mounted on a wooden handle that fit the palm of a hand, the kepa lima was the symbol of the members of Hale Naua (the secret society of King David Kalakaua). The kepa lima signified belonging and was not used by its members as a weapon. You don’t consider yourself to be a creature of habit, which is why you’re not necessarily on the lookout for the warning signs that you might be stuck in an invisible rut of some kind. Although most of the time you’ve embraced change in your life, and rolled with it quite ably, in some cases lately you’ve been dragging your feet just a bit. Someone’s bound to call you out about it sooner or later, but before you drag out all the examples of times when you’ve leapt before you looked, shut your mouth and listen. This time they may be right. It’s not like you to be so fearful and conservative.

Shake it off and jump into this new thing, already.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

The problem with being so capable, organized, and determined, is that if you get pointed in the wrong direction, you can go quite far before you realize you ought to reverse course; at which point it’s that much harder, of course. Usually, you’re quite sensible and avoid these kinds of mistakes, but when you make them, the consequences are long-lasting and profound. That’s why I wouldn’t blow it off if anyone warns you that you might be doing the wrong thing.

Double-check what you’re up to. Other signs can get away with just diving in and figuring it out along the way, but you’re such a strong swimmer that I wouldn’t recommend that. If you end up too far out to sea, even you’d have trouble making it back to shore.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

It’s a war between the homebody and the social butterfly. One of you wants to go out all the time, the other is happiest staying in. This can be a huge source of conflict in any relationship, even a friendship. Poorly thought out compromises (homebody goes out more than they’d like, butterfly stays in more than they want to) often make both people miserable.

On the other hand if you both do your own thing too much, what’s the point of your relationship anymore?

These are the questions that’ll figure largely in this week. They could lead to a break-up of sorts, unless you two work hard right now to get to a happy, sustainable place located somewhere between your two perfect scenarios; luckily such a place actually exists – you just need to find it.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You can’t rush perfection. Luckily, what you’re up to is never going to be perfect, and thus there’s no real reason why you can’t pick up the pace. In fact, you really ought to; dragging your feet and then delivering something that’s good but not great (or even great but not amazing) isn’t likely to win you many admirers. Just get it done, already. Do it well enough to quell serious critics, but fast enough that you don’t get called out on your snail’s pace. The sooner you get this out of the way, the sooner you can move on to the stuff that’ll really make you shine.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

There’s no point in making demands when you have no leverage; it’ll just make you look silly. Instead, begin your negotiations from a sweeter, more humble place. You don’t need what you’re asking for, after all, though it’d be nice. Just ask for it, and don’t be afraid to compromise or make concessions if it’ll help you get it. There’s no need to be a tyrant, diva, or brat, and lots of reasons why you shouldn’t. Pointblank ultimatums are only likely to get you laughed

at. If that’s what you’re going for, though, by all means make some.

Sometimes you have no idea how much trouble you’re in until you’re neck-deep; sometimes you know just how badly what you’re up to could play out. I don’t know which is worse, going into something with your eyes open, dreading the moment it all turns to shit, or being surprised by unexpected consequences but enjoying yourself thoroughly up until then. I do know who’s more likely to avoid the trouble altogether: the person who’s looking out for it the entire time. Don’t embrace ignorance, no matter how blissful it might be. Looking ahead with unclouded vision may produce more anxiety, but it’s also likely to produce better results.
