Sergeant Chris Short joined the Army at the age of 20, and sustained injuries limiting use of his legs and arm. Now working with the Suicide Prevention Program in the Central Arkansas Veteran’s Healthcare System to share his experiences, strength, and hope with other veterans to help them recover.

One out of 11 adult males in Hawai‘i is an online sex buyer

‘ASTRONOMICAL’ PROSTITUTION DEMAND IN HAWAI‘I, STUDY FINDS “I would also like to share on the record that I called you from home because this morning we had to place our office in formal lockdown, file a police report, and get sheriff escort” Khara Jabola-Carolus, Executive Director of the Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women told me, following a threat of “imminent physical danger” her office received on Friday, Sep. 21.

“This is a big business and no one – from the small time profiteers to networks and institutions – wants their money flow interrupted.”

The threat, Jabola-Carolus said, was in response to the organization’s political stance and publication of a study by HSCSW and Arizona State University School of Social Work, titled Sex Trafficking in Hawai‘i Part 1: Exploring Online Sex Buyers, that suggests prostitution demand is much higher in Hawai‘i than it is in the rest of the U.S. The study used the O‘ahu and Big Island “Women Seeking Men” personals section of Backpage.com, “a wellknown site for sex selling advertisements around the globe,” to post sex advertisements on Mar. 23 and 30, 2018. Researchers analyzed the responses to derive estimates of the size of the sex-buying population.

In one day, the research team elicited 756 contacts from 407 unique phone numbers with the advertisement posted Mar. 23 on the O‘ahu Backpage site. In that same 24-hour period, 58 other sex advertisements were independently posted on the O‘ahu Backpage section. Within five minutes of posting, 10 texts from seven phone numbers and 10 calls from four numbers were received from potential sex buyers. In response to the ad posted on the Big Island Backpage that day, 206 contacts were made from 113 unique phone numbers.

Mar. 30, which was Good Friday, was a slower day for the research team. The O‘ahu advertisement received 430 responses from 239 unique phone numbers; the Big Island ad got 95 from 65 unique numbers. Using “the most up to date and conservative statistical methods,” the study estimated “that one out of every elev-

en males (9 out of 100) over the age of 18 and living in Hawai‘i, are online sex shoppers.”

According to the ASU team, the response to sex-selling advertisements in Hawai‘i state was much higher than in other areas of the U.S. where research was conducted: “a typical response in Phoenix, Arizona of 45 unique respondents, in Chicago, Illinois, 25 unique respondents, Denver, Colorado, 20 unique respondents, and Boston, Massachusetts, 22 respondents.”

The Oldest Profession in the World?

“Prior to Western contact in 1776, there was no prostitution in Hawai‘i. There was also no term for prostitution in ‘Olelo Hawai‘i (Native Hawaiian language)” states the report, citing renowned Native Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui. “The demand for prostitution in Hawai‘i can be traced to Western intervention,” it continues, referring to the growth of the whaling industry in the Pacific which lead to an increase of foreign men “who assumed that Hawaiian women should be available to them if offered material or monetary renumeration [sic].”

The report’s reference to the Western roots of the commodification of sex, women, and bodies and to the patriarchal and colonialistic ideology which made early foreigners feel entitled to the bodies of native people, is contrary to the common phrase that prostitution is “oldest profession in the world.”

“Prostitution,” the report asserts, “made inroads as gender roles where women had status and inherent value were replaced by a rigid, hierarchical gender binary where women became adjuncts to men. This occurred alongside increased attempts by Westerners to control Native sexuality, land, education and economies, culminating in a shocking overthrow of the Native Hawaiian Kingdom.” The inroads continued into modern history, with the military and tourism industry further driving demand.

The argument between those who think prostitution is an unavoidable reality and those who disagree on a historical and moral basis gets to the point of the contemporary debate regarding sex work: Should markets be eliminated with strictly enforced laws in order to end prostitution demand, or should they be legalized and regulated for sex workers’ safety and tax revenue?

Shortly after the HSCSW/ASU study was conducted in March, Backpage.com was seized by the Justice Department, an indictment that reignited the debate. Although many of the charges filed against Backpage included allegations that the site contributed to the proliferation of advertisements for sex which contained children and victims of sex trafficking, outlets responded with a number of stories that expressed concern that the shutdown would lead to less safe conditions for sex workers.

A Vice Broadly piece interviewed criminologist Mary Finn of Michigan State University. “[Sex work] is the oldest profession, and it’s continuing to flourish,” she said. “We enact [anti-prostitution] laws because we think we’re helping vulnerable people, but, for those individuals who are involved in the sale of sex, criminalizing it just drives it further underground. This can prevent individuals from seeking assistance, and it’s also a public health issue.”

N’jaila Rhee, an educator, sex worker, and host of The Cuntcast Podcast, told The Verge that sex workers who “are impoverished, those that are running away from abusive partners, those that are actively trying to get out of really bad situations, especially black, trans street workers” are “now cut off from a means of elevating themselves into a safer workspace.”

Another sex worker, interviewed by The Cut, told a reporter “right now, the focus is on finding the next Backpage. Once

Reframing the Issue This support for Backpage as a “safe” market came despite recent testimony to U.S. Senate subcommittees by Yiota Souras, vice president and general counsel for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Media, that more than 71 percent of child sex trafficking reports from the public to the CyberTipline were related to Backpage. The problem had become so rampant on the site, Souras said, that staff would check Backpage first whenever there were reports of missing children at risk of human trafficking.

“I feel like we’re thinking about it too much as just a black-and-white binary because that’s what folks who are pro-transactional sex or pro-commodification of sex are pushing,” Khara Jabola-Carolus told me in response to the argument that markets such as Backpage gave sex workers opportunities. “The sex trade is really a spectrum,” Jabola-Carolus said, and workers, like those highlighted in The Verge and The Cut who find it empowering, are a privileged minority at one end: “Everyone else along the spectrum doesn’t have all that. Endless research shows a majority of people don’t have all that. So the majority of people in the sex trade are not that privileged, have some form of coercion, would probably meet the definition of being trafficked.”

“Ultimately,” the report by HSCSW/ASU concludes, “sex buyer demand is the culprit of sex trafficking. Addressing sex buyers is a critical step to reducing sex trafficking in Hawai‘i.

Sex buyers create a market for victims to be bought and sold for sex, with over 400 buyers for one online advertisement, there is a tremendous incentive for sex traffickers to sexually exploit children and adults in Hawai‘i.”

Yet, in Honolulu, sex buyers are arrested far less than prostituted people. “From JanuaryDecember 2017, 36 sex buyers and 72-prostituted persons were arrested,” the report states.

“From January to June 2018, 14 sex buyers and 37-prostituted persons were arrested.”

“Criminalizing those prostituting drives them away from help,” Jabola-Carolus said, “We must decriminalize those being prostituted, wherever they fall on the spectrum… but that doesn’t mean that we should decriminalize those driving the demand. Note it’s the same demand for prostitution and sex trafficking.”

But with more people in Honolulu being penalized for sit-lie violations and jaywalking than for buying sex, it’s clear the State of Hawai‘i and law enforcement don’t quite see the problem the same way.

Monica Walley of Holden Heights, Florida, wrote a negative online review Aug. 20 about the Daybreak Diner in Orlando, accusing the restaurant of refusing service to her disabled mother. The negative review didn’t sit well with the diner owner’s son, Michael Johnson, or his housemates, Jesse Martin and Norman Auvil, reported WFTV. That evening, as the three sat drinking beer, Martin looked up Walley’s address, then they drove to her home, where Auvil, 42, shot three rounds into the house. “I actually could feel the air from the bullet as it passed by me,” said Ken Walley, Monica’s father. “I didn’t think anybody was crazy enough to do something like this over something so small,” Monica Walley said.

Auvil was arrested Aug. 30 and charged with shooting into a dwelling, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

University of Houston student Jehv M. looked at a blank wall in his local McDonald’s and saw opportunity. Hoping to boost Asian representation in the burger chain’s advertising, Jehv created a poster featuring himself and a friend touting McDonald’s french fries.

They bought used McDonald’s uniforms at a thrift store as disguises, then boldly hung the poster in a Pearland, Texas, location as customers ordered and ate around them. United Press International reported that 51 days later, the poster still hung on the wall unnoticed, as shown in a photo on Jehv’s Twitter feed. As of Sept. 4, it was not clear whether management at McDonald’s knew of the poster’s origins.

DON’T DO DRUGS On Sept. 3, as an unnamed woman drove through Columbia Park, Washington, she witnessed a beaver being struck by a car.

TWO RIGHT FEET Thieves in Roanoke County, Virginia, hit the same shoe store twice in July and August, according to the Roanoke Times, stealing shirts, hoodies, jackets… and right shoes. Thirteen shoes meant for a right foot were taken from Clean Soles, where store operator Rob Wickham said he typically displays right shoes and keeps the mates behind the counter. They’re “not much good unless you have two right feet,” said Wickham. A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with the July break-in.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A homeowner in Toluca Lake, California, looked at video from his surveillance camera late on Aug. 29 and saw a person on the property, but it wasn’t until the next day, when he looked around for any damage, that a man was discovered stuck between a wall and a garage. KCAL TV reported that it took firefighters more than an hour to free the unnamed man, a suspect wanted in connection with a burglary the night before. Los Angeles police arrested him for trespassing as he was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

KIDS NEED BOUNDARIES Bryan Tucker of Sandston, Virginia, was FED UP TO HERE! with kids littering his lawn as they waited at the Henrico County school bus stop adjacent to his property. So on Sept. 4, he installed a battery-powered electric fence.

“They don’t respect other people’s land,” Tucker told WTVR TV. “I pick up trash every day.” Officials informed him later that day that the fence was placed on county property, not his own, so Tucker took it down. EASY MARKS Three men in Westborough, Massachusetts, are out $306,000 after falling victim to a scam, MassLive.com reported on Aug. 29.

Joseph Boakye, 31, of Worcester is one of two suspects wanted by Westborough police for allegedly selling 15 kilograms of counterfeit gold dust. In July, the victims met Boakye and his accomplice at an Extended Stay America hotel and tested the gold dust for authenticity.

Apparently satisfied, they paid $26,000 in cash and transferred $280,000 into a Bank of America account, after which they received a locked Sentry safe that supposedly held the gold dust. Boakye told them they would get the combination to the safe after the transfer cleared. But two days later, when they were unable to open the safe, the victims called a locksmith. Inside – shocking! – was counterfeit gold. ■

FUNDING OUR KEIKI’S

FUTURE IS VOTING TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION THE ANSWER?

T

his election, voters will have the chance to amend the state constitution. The ballot question, “Shall the legislature be authorized to establish, as provided by law, a surcharge on investment real property to be used to support public education?” has been the subject of heated debate. If the majority of votes cast and tallied for the question are yes votes (blank and over votes will count as “No”), the state constitution Article VIII, which reserves the power and duties of real property taxation for counties, will be amended to give the state legislature the power to “establish, as provided by law, a surcharge on investment real property.” Article VII, relating to education funding, would be amended to allow funds from the new surcharge to support public education.

The amendment itself would not implement the surcharge; those details would have to be negotiated in a legislative session, following the normal legislative process.

Still, the proposed amendment, which could grant the state greater taxing power, signals both tremendous opportunity and serious risk. Here, we take a look at some of the different groups trying to shape public opinion on the proposed constitutional amendment and the rationale for their stances. The issue is so complex that our hope is that readers will take the time to understand their perspectives in order to weigh the issue.

The County Council Questions the State On Friday, Sep. 21, the council deliberated a resolution to urge an audit of the Hawai‘i State Department of Education. The

resolution, transmitted by Councilmember Riki Hokama, was drafted in response to the ballot question.

“I’m not convinced that it’s just the money that’s the issue,” Hokama said in support of his resolution to urge the DOE audit. “I believe our people deserve to know, what is the reality of our Department of Education?” In a statement, Hokama elaborated, “the proposed Constitutional amendment ballot question, authorized by the State Legislature, fails to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness within the Department of Education.”

Discussion on the proposed resolution opened the floor for councilmembers to voice their many other concerns regarding the proposed amendment, including greater centralization of schools, fears of greater tax burdens on residents, and vague amendment language.

“Charter schools don’t get the same amount per child that the other schools get and yet they’re doing a lot with that money,” Councilmember Kelly King added.

“I’ve been a big believer, since the ‘90s, in decentralization as bringing a lot of financial benefit to our schools directly. So I would like to see this happen before we start just piling money on top of money.”

Councilmember Yuki Lei Sugimura added, “We do not want to be taxed twice for real property, which is what it sounds like what they are trying to do.”

Councilmember Mike White took aim at the ambiguity of the constitutional amendment. “We don’t know what the surcharge is. We know that it’s gonna be applied to

real property. We have no idea which real property.” White expressed worry that money added through a new tax could simply mean existing funds from other sources would be diverted.

“I understand why a lot of the people in the community who don’t interface with the legislature and don’t see the kinds of monkey-business that they engage in probably feel that this is all done fairly,” he added, “but in the dealings that we’ve had with the legislature we know that’s not always gonna be the case.”

White cited the Transient Accommodations Tax: “It started off as a temporary tax, but I never expected it to be used as a tool on Maui to fund rail on O‘ahu… We’re generating over $200 million just from Maui County; we get back $23.5 million.

Meanwhile, White said, the real property tax is the county’s only exclusive taxing power.

“We’re having to continually increase our taxes because we don’t get a share of the TAT that we should get, so we’re left basically asking our residents to pay for expenses incurred on behalf of our visitors even though they’ve already paid at the pump and in TAT. “ “So it’s in that frame of reference,” said White, “that we make this request [to audit the DOE]. I see nothing but trouble with this constitutional amendment because it is so vague and it leaves the legislature with such an incredibly open field without any guarantee about where that money is gonna go.”

The council voted with eight ayes and one excused to pass the resolution to urge the state to audit the DOE.

State Representatives Make No Guarantees At a Monday, Sep. 24 public forum about the ballot question, State Rep. Angus McKelvey seemed to agree with White’s characterization of the risks. “I gotta be honest with you: I can’t put odds on anything happening in that crazy building,” he said, when asked about the possibility that the constitutional amendment could result in a surcharge that hurts working families.

He cited the Transient Accommodations Tax. “I co-signed the TAT for education bill, voted up on it – still got steamrolled.

I mean I was there the whole way, signed the bill, pushed for it, voted for it on the floor, guess what: the O‘ahu legislators who outnumber us pretty much just steamrolled it through. I cannot sit here and tell you guys, ‘yes, definitely’ because I don’t have the ability to make a promise in front of 36 O‘ahu legislators.”

Rep. Justin Woodson was more hopeful that a good piece of legislation could be produced. “I was the chairman that actually crafted the current language in the state legislature,” he told me. “We changed the language because we wanted the legislature to have the maximum flexibility to make adjustments if in fact the proposal was ratified.”

The discussion that produced the final language of the ballot question shows the need for this flexibility, he said. Originally, the question was more specific and “the discussion was around investment properties defined as properties that people do not live in and are of a market value of $1 million to $1.5 million.”

Since then, his view has evolved. “My new

The result is that students are unprepared and miss opportunities. “To expand our great music program we had to cut a science line. We‘re not able to just offer the things to our students that they deserve,” Zupancic said. “When you work at a restaurant with your students, grinding it out past 11pm, they don’t look up to us like ‘that’s a life I want,’ so it’s just really unfortunate that we can’t be more of a role model to them.

Instead when they walk into the door it’s like, ‘I hope we can have paper today.’”

Zupancic remembered the Monday after the August Lahaina fires. ”200 volunteers from the community had to come up here to wash out the ash from the fire and clean, and that is the DOE’s responsibility to make sure we come back to safe working conditions. But who’s doing it: the teachers, the community… these are conditions that are not OK for students.”

“If you care about education or our kids,” Ms. Olson said, “you put your money where your mouth is.”

School Administrators On The Need For Funding For Matt Dillon, Principal at Iao Intermediate School, the state legislature is far removed from his daily responsibilities. “I don’t have an opinion one way or another about how the money is obtained from the state,” he told me. “From a principal’s

Steve Franz, Principal of King Kamehameha III Elementary, has worked at the school since 1996. Like Dillon, he stated, that he didn’t have an opinion on the constitutional amendment.

However, he was willing to talk about his experiences regarding funding in the DOE. “The issues that I have now are not new,” he said. “I’ve been with the DOE for about 20 years now as a teacher and as an administrator and the things that I see that are problems now are the same kinds of things that were going on when I started.

They just seem to be getting worse, especially on the West Side.”

“Staffing is probably the biggest one that impacts kids the most,” he elaborated.

His school deals with a turnover rate of about 15 percent, he said. Often, he gets applicants from the mainland who leave for a number of reasons including the high cost of living and relatively low pay.

Even local teachers often choose to work in other parts of the island where housing is cheaper. “Half your paycheck or more is going to rent and you don’t have money for anything else. So it’s hard to get people and then keep them.”

Additionally, Franz said, facilities have not been maintained over the years and schools are getting overcrowded without new construction of buildings and schools.

“We had a remodel at our school three to four years ago,” he said, “but prior to that we had issues that were taking years to resolve, like more than one leaky roof.”

“It all comes down to money,” said Franz. “What I know is that the way things have been funding now has been going on for a long time – I know that the DOE is haggling for money with every other de-

you don’t like are in that bill,” he told a local resident at the public forum concerned about excessive taxation, “that’s where you fight. If in that bill all those things are coming through, that’s where we fight together. My opinion as a teacher is that the benefits far outweigh the risks.”

The HSTA cites a number of sobering findings, including that Hawai‘i teachers are the lowest paid in the nation when adjusted for cost of living. Low teacher pay makes it difficult to train and retain teachers, they say, resulting in a shortage of more than 1,000 teachers. This and other factors contribute to Hawai‘i’s ranking as one of the worst states to be a teacher. But it isn’t just about pay: According to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Hawai‘i spends the lowest percentage of county and state funds on education in the country and when adjusted for cost of living, Hawai‘i ranks 45th in the nation in per pupil spending.

While the language of the con am doesn’t guarantee it, the HSTA’s intent is to stick the bill to investment properties and raise money from wealthy nonresidents.

Off the Beaten Track PA‘IA’S HISTORIC TRAIN DEPOT IS REIMAGINED TO GIVE THOSE LOOKING FOR FRESH, LOCAL FARE A BREAK FROM THE BUSTLE

“I call it upper Pa‘ia,” said Nadia Toraman, owner of both the yoga studio and Island Fresh Cafe. Toraman, who originated in Turkey but has been teaching yoga on Maui’s north shore for over 25 years, was drawn to the spot for its mellow vibe that retains all the history and charm of Pa‘ia without any of the scramble for parking.

The space is off the beaten track while being historically right on it, since the site was originally exactly where the train came through. Island Fresh Cafe is housed in what used to be the train station that linked Ha‘iku and Kahului. Back when Pa‘ia was an epicenter of commerce and agriculture, the train carried pineapple, sugarcane, and passengers along the North Shore route. No tracks are left at the depot, but the space maintains its historical charm. “I’d love to find out more about the history,” said Toraman.

Recently, we sat down at the cafe with owner Nadia Toraman to sample some of the delicious menu and talk about supporting local farmers and her thoughts on the intersection of yoga, food, and good living.

Though the cafe has been open for a few years, “I kind of kept it on the downlow the first year, to ease into it,” Toraman explained. “I wanted to be on point.”

And the cafe is on point. The space is beautiful and relaxing. The spacious outdoor lanai, painted with mediterranean reds and blues, was shady and cool despite the midday heat, with a breeze coming through.

The garden-like setting, soft Pa‘ia sunshine, and wild chickens pecking around outside were reminiscent of old plantation days.

The display case was full of chilled coconuts, baked goods were on display, and her friendly staff bustled around as we chatted.

Right now, the cafe is a breakfast and lunch spot, open from 7:30am to 2:30pm each day.

There is also a full coffee menu featuring house coffee, lattes, mochas, and matcha. “Many people come and work here, and have meetings,” said Toraman. Inside, a comfortable space features benches with pillows, artwork, and plants.

Many ingredients are sourced from local farmers. “I also wanted to support our local farmers,” Toraman said. “That to me is also yoga ‘off the mat.’” Toraman brings in Upcountry produce and local fruit, and the menu is full of kale, coconuts, potatoes, and fresh fish that all come from Maui.

It opened earlier this month and will run through November 9 in a display that is free and open to the public daily from 9am to 4pm. The exhibition is juried by conservation juror Fern Duvall and art juror Mina Elison, and features art from adults and students of all ages from around the island.

“Malama Wao Akua celebrates its fourth year at Hui No‘eau this year!” said Katie Peterson, Hui No‘eau’s Membership Coordinator. “Every year, it is so inspiring to see new artists joining in among seasoned veterans of the exhibition. Rooted in native species education, this exhibition truly lends itself to the inclusion of children, conservation specialists, and budding artists.”

Public education and awareness is at the heart of the exhibition. “Malama Wao Akua gives us the opportunity to educate, not only artists, but also visitors and Maui residents alike about the beautiful and often fragile species native to Maui Nui, often unseen by the public eye,” said Peterson. “Every year this awareness grows more and more.”

“Over the years I have noticed the variety of native flora and fauna subject matter get more and more diverse as artists delve into the world of what is native to Maui Nui,” said Borell.

The exhibition will also include Talk Story Thursdays from 5 to 6pm, in which conservationists will speak to the public about work in the field to protect natives.

rom the Hawaiian honeycreeper – the scarlet ‘i‘iwi – to the iconic silversword, ‘ahinahina, Hawai‘i is known for its unusual and beautiful native species. Over millions of years, natural selection took the flora and fauna of the extremely isolated archipelago in unique directions. Isolated from all major landmasses and with little competition, evolution became extremely creative, producing plants and animals that are not seen anywhere in the world.

Today, with international flights and shipping, monocrop agribusiness like pineapples

and cane sugar, and poor stewardship, many of the natives have gone extinct or are endangered. “The majority of land below 2,500 feet is no longer dominated with plants and animals that originated here before humans arrived,” explained Allison Borell, East Maui Watershed Partnership Community Outreach and Education Liaison.

Though the situation is pressing (and sometimes depressing), there are many on the island who are working towards conservation.

One of the ways conservationists bring attention to natives, their fragility and meaning, and efforts to preserve them, is through an annual celebration of the beauty and form of these creatures and plant life, depicted by local artists through a wild variety of mediums.

tography, and beyond. “The magic of this exhibition lies in the diversity of the work,” said Peterson. Curving koa leaves, mythic ‘ohi‘a lehua, and famous birds like nene and pueo are prominently featured. The art ranges “from the delicate botanical renderings of Charie Attix and Maggie Sutrov to the bold body painting of Melissa Bruck, from the intricate soft geometry of Christina Haines to the videography of Sherry Ringer; from kapa dyed with ‘uki‘uki, ma‘o, ‘iliahi, koa by Denby Freeland, to the handcrafted mineral pigmentation of Terrace Temple.”

“Artists must complete a certain amount of research to be sure they are featuring a species native to Maui Nui,” explains Peterson. “This process, in and of itself, functions to build a greater awareness of Maui’s unique natural history and native biota, much of which exists

aul Feig’s A Simple Favor is about how some friendships are so fulfilling and unexpected, we can’t believe our luck. When Stephanie, a widowed, lonely “supermom” (played by Anna Kendrick), meets the flashy, carefree Emily (played by Blake Lively), she’s visibly amazed that a wealthy, sophisticated figure in the fashion world would take an interest in her. Emily, who is uninhibited and outspoken, brings out a long dormant sense of empowerment in Stephanie. The two bond profoundly over time and, despite how different they are, they become close and rely on one another… until the day Emily disappears.

Feig’s return to form is one of the year’s nicest surprises: a delicious, sexy, and rather addictive mystery. A key to its success is how Feig’s confident direction manages a perfect control of tone, allowing comedy to organically breathe into the space of a dark tale. This isn’t a comedy or even a “comic thriller,” but a genuinely twisted murder-mystery puzzler that just happens to sport characters who are naturally funny.

The distinction is key: most comedies push the jokes and present a bouncy tone, announcing their lightness and keeping the audience feeling safe, because, hey, we got jokes! While not similar in terms of content, A Simple Favor reminded me of John Landis’ An American Werewolf in London or John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, which weren’t comedies but had characters so hilarious, the hu-

mor surprises and comes from a genuine, unforced place. Smart, character-driven comedy in the face of a sinister plot was exactly what was missing from Feig’s failed 2016 Ghostbusters remake.

Kendrick and Lively have never been better, with Kendrick in a unique character role that brings out the best in her acting instincts, while Lively gives a forceful, richly humorous turn. After appearing in three Pitch Perfect movies (possibly the worst movie trilogy since Big Momma’s House) and failing to deliver on the promise of her Oscar-nominated work in Up in the Air, Kendrick finally reaffirms her considerable talent and connects with a vehicle that suits her.

The feel of a neo-noir crime thriller connects, as Stephanie’s search for her best friend

makes us realize the hard truth about her newfound friendship – it’s not about building a case as much as learning how little she thought she knew about the person she admires the most. The cinematography by John Schwartzman (who filmed everything from Pearl Harbor to Jurassic World) and score by Theodore Shapiro are excellent at creating a modern thriller with a nod to the classics (Diabolique, in particular, is openly referenced). Jessica Sharzer’s screenplay (adapted from the Darcey Bell novel) keeps the give-and-take constantly funny and, even when I could guess an upcoming twist, I was still engrossed in the telling. The soundtrack is full of eclectic song choices, ranging from Brigitte Bardot to Cypress Hill, which keeps this feeling fresh and offbeat.

It’s a shame the ending doesn’t work.

While the plot doesn’t cop out in the final stretch, the tone ultimately does. The overly jokey, campy final reveal and epilogue are unworthy of the strong buildup.

While most of this plays like the best of “Big Little Lies,” the finale is reminiscent of “Desperate Housewives” at its worst.

Although the conclusion doesn’t ruin the movie as a whole, it does keep it from soaring as high as it could have.

Despite a weak finish, this is easily one of the biggest sleepers of the season and a strong return to form for Feig and Kendrick. An uninspired trailer and poster campaign improperly sold this as a farce, when it actually would make a fine double feature with Gone Girl. ■

Although it’s true that the more you mindlessly flail the worse off you’ll be, a little careful, methodical effort on your part should have you flying free in no time.

Luckily, you’re very good at that, provided you don’t fixate on all that fruitless work you did. It’s time to let that go, completely, or you won’t be able to think on your feet. And if you’re not able to think on your feet right now, you may as well lay down and cover your face and wait for people to just walk all over you.

If the tool you had at hand was a thick black marker, the kind of picture you’d draw on a post-it would be incredibly different from the one you’d draw on a wall-sized mural. Similarly, if you had to fill out that wall mural with a fine-tipped watercolor paintbrush, you’d lose interest or run out of time way before it was done. This week, make sure your “canvas” is the appropriate size for the point you want to make, and that the tools you use are the right ones for the job. It’d be far too easy to choose incorrectly on both counts if you’re not careful.

You are fond of your habits and rituals, aren’t you?

Doing things a certain way every day certainly adds to your stability and well-being – most of the time.

Sometimes, however, it can certainly start looking an awful lot like a rut. I’m not sure how much new stuff you really want coming into your life; no point in introducing a lot of novelty or many fresh new faces if you’re just not in the mood. However, even creatures of habit such as you require a little variety and innovation. Make a token effort in the next few weeks to ensure you’ve got at least that much.

Yes, I suppose burning down the house and trying to collect the insurance money is one possible solution to getting out of debt, but it’s not the best one.

The antidote to what ails you is probably a lot more complex and tedious than that, but it’s also far more likely to work. The scheme you’ve been contemplating is not only highly likely to fail, epically, but it’s got the added bonus of making your life even more miserable and screwed up than before. Take the long, sure route to where you need to go. Believe me, however lame, boring, and annoying that path is, it’s still far superior to any supposed shortcuts you think are available.

Just take things as they happen. You have much less than your usual ability to influence events right now, so the control freak in you really needs to take a vacation.

Trying to direct the action at the moment will just lead to frustration and misery for all concerned, because this stuff does not need a director, least of all you. Get all Zen about it if you can. Just allow things to unfold as they naturally want to, and enjoy them to the best of your ability. You can go back to making sure everything happens just the way you like it soon enough, but for now try to like it just the way it happens, instead.

Recall a situation when you had to meet and get to know a large number of people all at once – first day at school or a new job, for example – and remember how there were people who stood out at once, and some you had trouble telling apart at first. Later you’d learn that one is brash, slutty, and hilarious, the other a boring prude, but on that first day you couldn’t for the life of you remember which was which. Embrace the unpleasant. Since you’re stuck with the less savory aspects of your existence in any case, go ahead and celebrate them as best you can. The good news is, the more beauty and serenity you can inject into these situations, the less unpleasant they’ll be. What was forced at first may become natural soon enough. And it’s like a positive feedback circle. The happier you are with things as they are, the more things you will discover to be happy about. In other words, this kind of thing just gets easier and easier, and better and better.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Because you’re so socially weird, you sometimes have trouble discerning what is or isn’t appropriate behavior. This has not only allowed some serious kooks some prime real estate in your life, it’s also caused you to make some hilariously dramatic gaffes that have earned you a kind of notoriety in your circle. While being the eccentric amongst your friends is a fun role to play, it can sometimes erode your credibility with certain acquaintances.

You may have to tone it down this week, and you may need help doing it. When playing your most normal self, make sure you have an able partner-incrime. Enlist one, pronto.
