Contracts for workers expired in June

SHERATON MAUI WORKERS RALLY FOR A NEW DEAL, READY FOR STRIKE VOTE Tourists walked the sidewalk fronting the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa looking bewildered as they encountered the crowd of red shirts and bobbing signs that gathered at Ka‘anapali Parkway on Labor Day afternoon. Marching outside the entrance to the hotel, 200 people assembled to pressure the Marriott, Sheraton’s parent company, for a new employment contract by shouting union chants through megaphones and brandishing signs that read “One job should be enough.”

Sheraton Maui workers comprise 333 of the over 3,500 Marriott workers statewide represented by the union UNITE HERE Local 5, and had contracts that expired in June. After a summer of negotiations, these hotel employees are still without a contract.

“10 negotiating sessions and we haven’t had any real progress with Marriott or with Kyo-ya [Kyo-ya owns Sheraton Maui]. They’re disrespecting us,” said Erin Kelley, a bartender who’s worked at the Sheraton for seven years.

“We’re sitting there across from them at the negotiating table in good faith, asking for a livable wage, asking for benefits for our family and for our children. They’ve totally disrespected us and just said no to all of our proposals.”

“It’s so messed up,” she added.

“They’re the richest hotel management company in the world. They can’t even begin to understand the struggles that working people feel, and we’re here welcoming Marriott guests from all over the world, every single day, making memories for their vacations when we can’t even

afford to make memories with our own families because we’re working.”

Marilyn, a housekeeper, echoed that the fight was about dignity and quality of life for workers and their families. “We are fighting for our contract and for our community. Everything is so expensive. I have three kids, and I am a single parent. One job should be enough,” she said.

She recalled the experience of working more than one job, when she would drop her children off to school by 7am, and work one job from 8am-4pm followed by another from 4:30-10pm. “I come home like 11:45pm and my kids are sleeping already. It’s hard. It breaks my heart to drop them to school, you know, that I no more time with them.”

Evie Chargualaf, a hotel employee since 1979, works multiple side jobs.

Through tears, she talked about the effect Maui’s high cost of living has had on her family, including her son who is moving to the mainland where it is more affordable.

“My three grandchildren are leaving me and it hurts me because nobody can af-

ford homes here anymore,” she said. “You have to make $36-$39 an hour to be able to afford a home. So something’s wrong with our economy right now, something’s wrong with the Marriott, and something’s wrong with Kyo-ya because they’re not listening to us.”

Indeed, a report released this year by the National Low Income Housing Coalition titled Out of Reach 2018 stated that Hawai‘i has the highest housing wage in the nation at $36.13 per hour.

The housing wage refers to the amount of money a household must earn while working full time, in order to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment without spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing.

“I come from this line of work myself so I know what it’s like to work two to three jobs just to make ends meet, and be dependent on tips. Sometimes you get barely minimum wage,” said Elle Cochran, county councilmember (West Maui) and candidate for mayor, who was there to show support for the hotel workers. “UNITE HERE has always stood by me before I even became a councilmember, and I will be here by your side, always,” she told the crowd. “What [the Marriott is] doing is not right and we need to stand up to them.” Cochran is endorsed by UNITE HERE Local 5 in her bid for mayor.

As time passed, the 200-person rally moved from the Parkway entrance of the hotel to the beach, in full view of beachgoers, the Sheraton, and tourists sipping sunset cocktails. Some watched intently and took videos while others just sipped, unperturbed, while the chanting and sign waving continued.

“People don’t earn enough, it’s really bad. I’m moved, even,” said Maria, a tourist from Portugal. “We’re here, and I feel bad for being here. I hope they get their jobs and I think they should go on and do your struggle. It’s the only way. I don’t know how other people react but at least the managers, they know what’s going on. I think it’s good to make tourists see what’s going on.”

This week we ask: Have you ever had to work more than one job on Maui in order to get by?

Carolina, her daughter, worked at a Sheraton in Portugal and agreed. “That’s the most important part. Because the tourists don’t know what’s going on, and some maybe don’t care, but I care. Doing this in front of a Sheraton is a good tactic because you catch the attention. If you keep doing this in front of Marriott hotels I think someday it will make a difference.”

On the sand, Evie spoke through a megaphone while her co-workers shouted back responses and continued to voice their discontentment with the Marriott and their negotiations. “Do they care about us?

(No!) Do they care that we smile everyday to take care of our guests and make them happy so they come back over and over again? (No!) Do they care about our wellbeing, our livelihood, our health, our safety, that we have to smile while our backs are hurting and our ankles are ready to buckle underneath us? No, they don’t care.

“All they care about is money. But we work hard. We work hard. We’ve made them millionaires. Where is our share?

Where is our share of what we deserve?”

These contract negotiations come after Hawai‘i’s visitor industry had a recordsetting year in 2017. Additionally, the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority stated in their July 2018 monthly report that yearto-date visitor spending is up 9.8 percent statewide, with total visitors in July reaching 939,360, an increase of 5.3 percent and “the most ever for any month in Hawai‘i’s history.”

Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson has cashed in on Hawai‘i’s tourism success, making more than $13.3 million last year – 395 times what Marriott’s median employee made ($33,697).

At the end of the rally, UNITE HERE Local 5 organizer Lisa Grandinetti congratulated the hotel workers for uniting for the biggest rally the Sheraton Maui has had in about 20 years. “We’re still in negotiations,” she said, “but Marriott and Kyo-ya showed that they’re not gonna listen to us. They rejected our workload proposals, they rejected our job security proposals, they rejected our wage proposals. So what, are we gonna stop?”

From the look and sound of it, absolutely not.

Sheraton Maui workers are preparing to vote on Monday Sep. 10 to decide whether they should go on strike. “Nothing is happening at the negotiation table and our workers are ready to take it to the streets,” stated Grandinetti, who is “really confident that the workers are ready to take the next step to put pressure on the company.”

News Of The Weird MMM, TASTES LIKE CHICKEN In Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Aug. 17, a friendly game at Southers Marsh Golf Club turned ugly when Derek Harkins, 46, and an unnamed 57-year-old man got into a brawl on the 18th hole. But you gotta hand it to Harkins: The Patriot Ledger reported that he pointedly ended the fight by biting off the other man’s finger up to the knuckle, according to Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri. The victim, from Marshfield, was taken to the hospital, but his finger could not be reattached. Harkins was arrested at the scene and charged with assault and battery, mayhem and disturbing the peace.

28 YEARS LODGED United Press International reported that a 42-year-old British woman saw her eye doctor after experiencing swelling and drooping of her eyelid earlier this year. After performing an MRI, doctors discovered a cyst and performed surgery, during which they found a hard contact lens embedded in the eyelid. It turns out that the patient had suffered a blow to the eye 28 years ago and had assumed the lens fell out. She experienced no symptoms until the recent discomfort.

MALICIOUS MUSIC WHY THE WORLD HATES AMERICAN TOURISTS On an Aug. 17 flight between Chicago and Narita International Airport in Tokyo, a 24-year-old American man, who was reportedly unprovoked, urinated on a 50-year-old Japanese man sitting two rows behind him. The younger man had consumed at least four glasses of champagne and one cup of sake before the incident, police told Japan Today, and claimed not to remember what he had done. He was restrained aboard the remainder of the flight and turned over to police in Tokyo.

NOT THE HAPPIEST GREASE ON EARTH The happiest place on Earth couldn’t work its magic on Aug. 15 when a worker at nearby Harvest Power fell into a vat of oil and grease from Walt Disney World. The plant in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, recycles the resort’s food waste, then converts it into renewable energy and fertilizer.

John Korody, 61, and another worker were emptying the contents of a semitruck into a vat when Korody slipped on a grate and fell into the vat. His co-worker tried to pull him out, but the fumes overtook them both, and Korody slid farther in, according to The Washington Post.

The Reedy Creek Fire Department responded, but Korody was pronounced dead at the scene.

INDECENT EXPOSURE Debbie L. McCulley, 57, of Salem, Virginia, has been banned from all future Floyd County High School sporting events but, on the bright side, her indecent exposure case may eventually be dropped, following an incident area lawyers are calling “moon over Floyd.”

McCulley’s husband, Mark, is the JV softball coach for Glenvar High School, and the charges resulted from Debbie’s unusual reaction to her husband’s team’s loss to Floyd County in May. She “stood on or close to the pitcher’s mound and pulled down her pants with her right hand to expose her right butt cheek,” according to Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy G.H. Scott. But Debbie told the officer that her husband had confronted the opposing coach after the game, and she was afraid he would be “attacked,” so she was trying to divert attention from the two men. The Roanoke Times reported that Debbie wrote a letter of apology and will be performing community service. Chris Robinson of the Virginia High School League noted that crowd

After 16 years, neighbors of “Eva N.” in Sturovo, Slovakia, have gotten relief from her particular brand of torment, reported the BBC. From morning until night, the woman had played a four-minute aria from Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” over and over, with her speakers on full blast. “The whole street is suffering,” complained one resident. At first, the music-lover played the music to drown out a neighbor’s barking dog, but continued the practice until Aug. 6, when she was arrested for harassment and malicious persecution.

If found guilty, she could face between six months and three years in prison.

A POT(HOLE) FOR PLANTING A pothole in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, got a new life as a vegetable garden this summer after area residents grew weary of waiting for the city to repair it. The hole, which is several feet deep, had been expanding for months, neighbors said. So they filled it with tomato plants, which are now ripening and getting so tall they require wire cages for support. Now, “It’s sort of, like, become the community garden,” resident Bryan Link told CBC Radio. Finally, Mayor John Tory has agreed to not only fill the pothole, but to move the tomato plants to a community garden.

AT LEAST SHE WAS HONEST Near Mason City, Iowa, on Aug. 20, the Iowa State Patrol pulled over a Ferrari 488 Spider that was clocked going 137 mph during a rainstorm. “Not a great idea to drive this fast in the rain,” the trooper posted on Facebook with a photo of the radar readout.

The unnamed driver, however, wasn’t fazed; she thought she was going “around 100.” Fox News reported that if ticketed in a 70-mph zone (the highest speed limit in Iowa), her fine would be $335.

OOPS Pennsylvania State Police told Lehigh Valley Live that Evan T. Kasick, 52, of Upper Milford Township, was injured on Aug. 16 when he wrecked his motorcycle – in his own driveway.

Kasick sped into his driveway around 7:30 p.m. and struck a concrete barrier, causing him to be thrown from the Honda bike. He was taken to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries, and police issued a ticket for driving at an unsafe speed. In his driveway. ■

Fall Movie Preview 10 of the most enticing films coming soon to a theater near you.

A Star is Born (opens Oct 5) The Gist: Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, starring himself and Lady Gaga Why It Could Succeed: The early word on this musical drama is that Cooper and, yes, Ms. Gaga are in their element. Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliot are also in the cast.

On the Other Hand: There’s the creakiness of the material (this is the third remake, folks). It needs to play like Jeff Bridges’ Crazy Heart, not Gwyneth Paltrow’s Country Strong.

Venom (opens Oct. 5) The Gist: Remember the ending of Spider-Man 3? It’s back, but new and improved!

Why It Could Succeed: Tom Hardy, one of our finest actors, is taking on the title role.

This promises to be an edgier comic book movie than anything from Marvel or the competing Aquaman.

On The Other Hand: Director Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad looked like a sure thing, too. If it gets a PG-13 rating, will the

fanboys instantly turn on it?

First Man (opens Oct. 12) The Gist: Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong in this true life drama about the 1969 space race.

Why It Could Succeed: Writer/director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash and La La Land) is on a roll. The trailer looks great and Gosling brings mystique and charisma to Armstrong.

On The Other Hand: Knuckleheaded audiences convinced the moon landing was faked may turn their noses on this film.

Halloween (opens Oct. 19) The Gist: Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, once again facing Michael Myers (cue the music...)

Why It Could Succeed: Curtis did scream queen nostalgia duty 20 years ago, in Halloween H20, and it was a glorious return to form.

John Carpenter is the film’s executive producer.

On The Other Hand: David Gordon Green also made Pineapple Express, and may not have been the best choice to step in Carpenter’s shoes. Of all people, this was written

by Gordon and Danny McBride.

Bohemian Rhapsody (opens Nov. 2) The Gist: At long last, the story of Freddie Mercury and the legacy of Queen Why It Could Rock: Here is the season’s biggest curiosity item. At least we know the soundtrack is aces. Despite the controversy over who directed this thing, Bryan Singer is still listed.

On The Other Hand: Rami Malek is a poor substitute for Sacha Baron Cohen, the original choice for Mercury. This deeply troubled production might play more like “mud on your face… big dis-grace!”

Suspiria (opens Nov. 2nd) The Gist: Remake of the Italian horror classic, stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton Why It Could Succeed: The cast is game

and talented, director Luca Guadagnino is coming off Call Me By Your Name, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke did the soundtrack, and the trailer is fantastic.

On The Other Hand: The mix of grotesque imagery and heady artiness might turn off mainstream and horror audiences, the same way Mother! had audiences crying uncle the year before.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web (opens Nov. 9) The Gist: The first new Lisbeth Salander thriller, not written by creator Stieg Larsson.

Why It Could Succeed: Claire Foy (on a roll after Unsane and playing Mrs. Armstrong in First Man) is an ideal choice for Salander. Director Fede Alvarez is a maestro with suspense On The Other Hand: With David Fincher, Daniel Craig, and Rooney Mara gone, this only has Foy and the name to carry it. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a hit that left a bad aftertaste.

Widows (opens Nov. 16) The Gist: A heist thriller for grown-ups, starring Viola Davis and Liam Neeson Why It Could Rock: Director Steve McQueen’s post-12 Years a Slave film looks like a rousing antidote for quality-starved audiences. Davis’ first film since winning Best Actress for Fences.

On The Other Hand: McQueen’s ultraserious approach to pulpy material might squeeze the fun out of it. Will audiences go for a grittier, longer Ocean’s 8?

The Front Runner (opens Nov. 21)

he fall movie season is traditionally the busiest, and not just for the massive amount of audiences who turn up. Between now and December 31, there are 120 movies scheduled for release.

That doesn’t even include the dozens more that will be added late to the schedule.

There’s no need for me to mention Jason Momoa in Aquaman or Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns – you know you’re seeing them and that they’ll make a lot of money. Likewise, Bumblebee or the CGI take on Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, which look awful but you know you can’t resist, right? Amidst all the sequels, prequels, remakes, and comic book movies, there’s a lot of promise in the upcoming lineup.

Here are 10 of the most enticing films coming soon to a theater near you.

Bohemian Rhapsody opens Nov. 2nd

The Gist: Remember Senator Gary Hart, Donna Rice, and the S.S. Monkey Business?

Why It Could Succeed: Hugh Jackman is playing one of the most gossiped-about and controversial former presidential candidates. Vera Farmiga and J.K. Simmons are in the supporting cast.

On The Other Hand: This may prove our 1980s nostalgia craze has its limits in the tale of an ‘88 candidate. Will Hart’s once red-hot journey seem like much in the era of a certain Billy Bush interview?

Creed II (opens Nov 21st) The Gist: Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa are back… and so is Ivan Drago.

Why It Could Succeed: Michael B. Jordan returns as the son of Apollo Creed and Sylvester Stallone once again reminds us why Balboa is among our most endearing characters. Who can resist Creed v. Drago?

On The Other Hand: Stallone wrote the screenplay but Ryan Coogler is out. Untested newcomer Steven Caple Jr. takes over directing duties. Also, like Balboa, this series doesn’t know when to quit. ■

The other night I dreamt that an irrefutable prophecy had decreed my death by murder, but that if I was willing to embrace the inevitability of my fate (by strapping explosives to my chest), I’d be able to take my murderer with me, thereby saving their potential future victims. Of course doing so was a bit of a no-brainer, as it should be for you this week, when a little sacrifice on your part will save a bunch of other people from some turmoil and heartache. Since what you’re being asked to give up is nowhere near as extreme as your very life, there’s no real excuse (except selfishness) to not do it.

When I go through a rough patch or have a bad day or week, I try to simplify a bit. Instead of focusing on my own problems or troubles, I just try to be kind and thoughtful towards those around me. The idea is that just by putting good stuff out there, I’ll not only feel better, but eventually – through oft circuitous and incredible ways – that kindness will circle back around and make my life a little better, too. Refrain from turning inward this week; there’s no point in dwelling on whatever’s going on. Instead, focus your attention and energy on what’s happening around you. You’ll forget your problems, and by the time you get back to focusing on them, you’ll find that they’re not as big as they were (or as you thought they were).

Since you’re able to see the next few steps that must be taken, you might as well start preparing for them now. I’m surprised you haven’t yet. Perhaps it’s because you’d been hoping things might go differently. By now it should be obvious which way they’re headed. Pretending otherwise would diverge from optimism and delve into delusional. Face the reality you can clearly see. This is a good week to set yourself up to survive and thrive in the new situations you’re moving towards. I know you’re too thoughtful and careful not to. Don’t prove me wrong.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Leave a little bitter in your coffee this week. You want to make sure you have something strong to prep your mouth for all the subtle and varied kinds of sweetness coming your way this week. If your palate is already sullied by a cheap over-sugared coffee flavor, you might miss some of them. That’d be a shame. If you’re able to detect and appreciate them, you’re going to be a lot more capable of manifesting them more often. Your life could be a much sweeter place than it is; make sure you’re in a position to notice and enjoy it.

A watched pot never boils, right? Well, a lot of things won’t happen if you put too much attention and pressure on them, or at least they won’t happen the way you hope. Sometimes you just have to give the situation a little space and trust and hope for the best. If it doesn’t play out the way you wanted, chances are it wouldn’t have even if you’d watched it like a hawk. At least this way everyone had an easier time of it and you gave things a chance to unfold ideally in a natural, unforced way. Since that’s the only way it could have happened, realistically, it’s better that you at least gave it that chance, no?

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Even in our incredibly interconnected world, an ocean is a great divide. It’s not much further to cross the Atlantic than to cross the U.S., but it somehow feels a lot further. You could, after all, theoretically walk across the country, but there’s no way you’d get over that ocean without a big machine to carry you. Similarly, the things separating you from where you want to go are also real obstacles, but I’m more concerned about their psychological component.

You have ways to feel connected with what’s on the other side of that ocean, even if you can’t realistically get there right this second. Please exercise them.

When pessimism masquerades as pure realism, it’s difficult to shake off. You get worried that being optimistic under those circumstances amounts to being delusional. That’s not precisely true, though. There’s a bright side to every situation and a light at the end of nearly every tunnel. You can focus on that without losing sight of how perilous or difficult it might be to get there. There’s no need to imagine hope where there is none (and by all means beware of that).

However, obsessively focusing on that thread of hope, no matter how slender, is the best way to get to a place where things don’t feel so tenuous.
