87-year-old Souki has a future as Maui News pundit

THE MAUI NEWS GIVES PLATFORM TO DISGRACED SEXUAL HARASSER The Maui News made a questionable choice in their Aug. 19 Sunday Edition article “Not ready for prime time,” a review of local political observers’ views on the 2018 Maui County Council election races. The piece is problematic, not for any particularly controversial opinion within, but because of one of the pundits that Maui News City Editor Brian Perry rounded up for political commentary.

The article includes comments from Dick Mayer and Mark Sheehan… and former state representative and Speaker of the House, Joe Souki. Souki, you might remember, was forced to resign by the Hawai‘i State Ethics Commission earlier this year following an investigation into accusations filed against the longtime lawmaker for sexual harassment.

The Mar. 16 ethics investigation resolution report is pretty damning (and nauseating), and makes clear the way that Souki inappropriately treated women under the cover of being a high-ranking public official. It states that Souki admitted to touching and kissing “more than one woman in ways that were inappropriate and unwelcome… this physical contact exceeded the boundaries of the customary ‘aloha kiss.’”

Former speaker Souki further admitted to making sexual comments “on the physical appearance of more than one woman, that were inappropriate and unwanted.”

“Because of his power as Speaker over legislation and budgeting questions,” the ethics report states, “women were reticent to confront Respondent Souki or to file a complaint with the House of Representatives regarding his conduct…

Challenging then-Speaker Souki’s conduct could have jeopardized her [Rachel Wong, former Department of Human Services Director, who filed a complaint] agency’s budget and legislation…

She, like others, felt she had no choice but

to remain silent in the face of Respondent Souki’s behavior.”

Anita Hofschneider’s Mar. 21 article (“Hawai‘i House Speaker Forced Out…”) in Honolulu Civil Beat illustrates the culture of silence and acceptance of sexually inappropriate behavior in the workplace at the Hawai‘i State Legislature as “deeply ingrained.” Numerous women spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, and there are multiple reports of dismissal of women’s concerns regarding Souki’s behavior and acceptance of this abuse of power as normal (note: There has never been a female speaker of the house in Hawai‘i).

The allegations of sexual harassment and the subsequent investigation and resignation of Joe Souki came during the national #MeToo movement, a time when the abuses of power by high-ranking men are being exposed and receiving closer scrutiny as victims are encouraged to speak out and join a national conversation about misconduct and gender relations.

At this point, I have to ask: Really, The Maui News? In today’s climate, you can’t find anyone more qualified for political commentary than a disgraced public official who abused his power while in office? And then, you think it’s appropriate to cite him as a two-time speaker of the

house with no recognition of his misconduct, like he simply decided that at the age of 87 it was time for the Summer of Joe? Come on – even the State Ethics Commission is barring Souki from seeking public office for two years.

Publishing Souki adds more questions to this conversation. Should Joe Souki be blackballed for his misconduct? Should someone who has abused power still be considered an expert in the exercise of that power? Is The Maui News unethically and inappropriately giving a platform to someone who has used status in the past to prey on others? Should there be long-term consequences for these individuals who are outed as harassers and abusers?

As the last year’s wave of perverts rolls away from our memory, this last question will prove decisive for the fate of men like Souki. Will we see Charlie Rose stage a comeback, pitch it as a redemption series, and invite a whole line-up of (former?) predators from Matt Lauer to Louis C.K. to share their perspectives on #MeToo? If he does, I guess we know who’ll be willing to publish it, and kindly forget any troublesome history too.

At press time, The Maui News City Editor Brian Perry did not respond to a request for comment.

MAUITIME STANDS WITH PUBLICATIONS IN REAFFIRMING THE IMPORTANCE OF FREEDOM OF THE PRESS I’ll admit it: I started reading MauiTime because it was free. I didn’t first pick up the paper for the great writing, engaging storytelling, characteristic voice, insightful jabs, or even important news. I picked the paper up because it was free, and because it was there.

It’s a pressing need these days. The internet, hyper-connectivity, social media, and Trump-brand facts have collided in an environment where misinformation spreads fast, everyone has a platform, and blatant lies can be masked with a more outrageous untruth. Democracy, which rests its power in the people, becomes grotesque when it reflects and serves lies and ignorance.

This is why the media and the press have proudly considered themself the fourth branch of government: Knowledge and informed action give the power to the people. Last week, publications nationwide unified to publish editorials reaffirming the importance of press freedom to denounce President Trump’s treatment of the media and claims that we are “the enemy of the people” because, as The Washington Post has sloganized, “democracy dies in the dark.”

Put simply, at MauiTime we believe that critical thinking is good, and that an informed community will have strong ties and reach decisions that best serve the common good. I didn’t open my first MauiTime to think critically or inform myself, but in reading it I was inspired.

We are a weekly publication, and an alternative weekly at that, so we don’t claim to have all the news you need. We acknowledge our voice can be strong.

But we aren’t fake. We’re transparent and enter the conversation in good faith.

Readers may agree or disagree with what we publish; we are glad for the opportunity to express and examine our thinking and evidence. If we inspire you to read another story, form an argument, or take action, I’ll count that as success. Freedom of the press makes this possible, and without it the world would indeed be a darker place.

She watched the Walk Stories with the candidates, she said, and it helped her make a decision before voting in the Primary Election. She showed the videos to her best friend and boyfriend, both of whom had never voted.

After watching our candidate interviews, they were moved to vote for the first time.

MAUI COUNTY OFFICE ON AGING EXECUTIVE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION Deborah Stone-Walls, executive of the Maui County Office on Aging, was elected president of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a). Stone-Walls, who has been with Maui’s Office on Aging since 2008, was elected to serve a two-year term. StoneWalls most recently served as n4a’s first vice president and has served on the n4a board of directors for eight years. She was sworn in by Immediate Past President Kathryn C. Boles upon the conclusion of Boles’ term during n4a’s 43rd Annual Conference in Chicago in July.

“We’re delighted that n4a’s members have elected Deb as President,” said n4a CEO Sandy Markwood. “Deb’s experience in aging and human services will be a tremendous asset as n4a undertakes new and bold initiatives that will propel both our members and the entire Aging Network forward.”

Stone-Walls will sit at a board of newly elected members from Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Arizona, Florida, Vermont, Mississippi, and Maryland. N4a’s board members are responsible for ensuring that n4a fulfills its mission while providing governance and accountability for its operations.

SMALL HANDS FOR SMALL BUSINESS: SENATOR SCHATZ GETS TRUMP’S AUTOGRAPH Hawai‘i’s U.S. Senator Brian Schatz continues to make changes in Washington; Schatz’s bill to help small business fight cybersecurity was signed into law Aug. 14 by Donald Trump.

Small businesses are a pillar of the American economy but these businesses are major targets for cyberattacks, said a spokesperson from Schatz’ office. The new legislation, the National Institute

of Standards and Technology Small Business Cybersecurity Act, will provide consistent resources for small businesses to best protect their digital assets from cybersecurity threats.

“As businesses rely more and more on the internet to run efficiently and reach more customers, they will continue to be vulnerable to cyberattacks,” said Senator Schatz, lead Democrat on the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet. “But while big businesses have the resources to protect themselves, small businesses do not, and that’s exactly what makes them an easy target for hackers.

This new law will give small businesses the tools to firm up their cybersecurity infrastructure and fight online attacks.”

The Senate had unanimously passed the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act in 2014, which codified the industry-led process for the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, a comprehensive voluntary guide for organizations and businesses to better manage and reduce cybersecurity risks. While this framework continues to play a key role in improving the cyber resilience of the United States, additional coordinated resources are necessary to improve the ability of small businesses to use the framework, according to Schatz office. The legislation, formerly known as the MAIN STREET Cybersecurity Act, will ensure NIST considers the needs of small businesses as it updates the framework and provide simplified, consistent resources based on the NIST framework specifically for small businesses.

In addition to Schatz and co-author James Risch (R-ID), co-sponsors of the bill include U.S. Senators John Thune (R-SD), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Maggie Hassan (DNH), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

The fair season excitement keep building with this week’s update for the 96th Maui Fair: The entry deadline for the Baby of the Year Contest is Sep. 24 – or the first 96 contestants. Interested parents who want to show the contest judges their “baby bravado,” can register online at Mauifair.com.

Potential contestants born on or between Oct. 7, 2016 and Oct. 7, 2017 will be eligible to participate; there is no admission fee. The contest itself takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the fair’s main entertainment stage.

Contestants in the Baby of the Year Contest, presented by Pacific Media Group, are judged on best dressed, healthiness, and personality, with each category scored on a 25-point scale. The five highest-scoring babies are each awarded prizes from the Maui Fair and its many sponsors.

IDEAS SOUGHT FOR MAUI COUNTY BUDGET Mayor Alan Arakawa is seeking the community’s input on the Maui County budget. Arakawa and his administration will host a series of community meetings in September and October to receive comments and suggestions from the public regarding the proposed budget for the Fiscal Year 2020. Citizens with an interest in the county budget are encouraged to attend a meeting in their local area and offer input, either as individuals or on behalf of an organization. Both written and verbal comments will be accepted.

“This is a valuable opportunity for our citizens to have a say in how their taxpayer dollars are spent by the County,” said Arakawa. “Many of the projects and new services that my administration has implemented over the years were a direct result of the input from these community meetings. Suggestions from the public help us prioritize what is best for our community, and understand how to better serve our residents. Putting together the Maui County budget is a process in which everyone can take part.”

Tables will be set up to allow directors and staff from each county department to meet with members of the public, hear budget-related needs, listen to concerns, and answer questions about various county-related issues. Attendees will be given a form upon arrival at the meeting to determine their needs and to which department(s) their comments pertain.

The meeting in each community will begin with an overview by Arakawa and Budget Director Sandy Baz, followed by approximately one hour for attendees to submit comments at the various department tables.

Staff from the Community Development Block Grant office will also be on-hand to offer information and gather public input on the use of the county’s funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Community Development Block Grant is a federal program created by Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. CDBG funds received will be utilized for housing and community development needs primarily benefiting low and moderate income persons.

Armed thieves in New Delhi, India, left a craftsman deep in debt after they made off with 500 pounds of wigs and raw hair worth more than $20,000 on Jul. 27, according to the Associated Press. “People think wigs are cheap, but they cost a fortune to make,” wig-maker Jahangir Hussain said. In fact, he had borrowed more than $17,000 to buy hair last month from South Indian wholesalers. India exports wigs and hair extensions to the tune of $300 million a year; much of the raw materials are collected at Hindu temples where people shave their heads as a religious sacrifice, a practice called tonsuring.

PROBLEM-SOLVER The list of offenses was long when Franklyn Williams, 32, appeared in Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Common Pleas Court on Jul. 31 to be sentenced for aggravated robbery, kidnapping, theft, misuse of credit cards, and more – including cutting off his ankle bracelet late last year and fleeing to Nebraska, where he claimed he was hit over the head and lost his memory. But it was his courtroom behavior that spurred Judge John Russo to call for an extreme measure. During the hearing, Williams would not stop talking, even interrupting his own lawyers repeatedly over about 30 minutes. Finally, Russo ordered deputies to tape the defendant’s mouth shut, reported FOX 8 in Cleveland.

Williams continued to talk until deputies applied more tape, and finally Russo sentenced him to 24 years in prison.

SO MANY QUESTIONS When an employee of Sarabeth’s restaurant in New York City opened the walk-in freezer door on Aug. 5, a man jumped out, yelling, “Away from me, Satan!” and grabbed a knife from the kitchen, which he used to threaten restaurant staff. Carlton Henderson, 54, of Cave Creek, Arizona, struggled with workers but eventually fell unconscious and was transported to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the New York Post reported.

Authorities don’t know (1) why and how he entered the freezer and (2) why he died, but they did determine he was charged last year with two 1988 cold-case murders in Boston. He had been released on bail the week before the freezer incident and was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14.

RIPE West Valley City, Utah, has a malodorous mystery on its hands. The community stinks, and for the past year, officials have been fielding complaints about the smell, which city communications director Sam Johnson described as “a musty sewer smell... that you can smell in certain parts of the city stronger,” according to FOX 13.

The city has now launched a campaign recruiting residents to help pinpoint the

source of the odor: “If you smell something, say something.” They’re hoping more complaints will spur Salt Lake County and Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality to investigate and take action.

NERD ALERT Who knew? Apparently the unofficial “uniform” for Bay Area techies and venture capital investors is a vest, so the Japanese company Uniqlo is cashing in with a vest vending machine at the San Francisco International Airport. The airport’s public information officer, Doug Yakel, says the machine is no joke; it earns $10,000 a month on average. Do the math: At $49.90 apiece, the company is selling about 200 of its ultra-light down vests each month. “This is the first time we’ve had clothing available for sale from a vending machine, which we thought was very unique,” Yakel told Business Insider.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL The Baltimore Sun reported that a driver’s license examiner in Glen Burnie, Maryland, got a whiff of something illegal on Aug. 6 when she approached a car about to be used in a driving test. She called Maryland State Police, who found Reginald D. Wooding Jr., 22, of Baltimore waiting in his mother’s car to take his test. But he never got the chance: Wooding was in possession of marijuana, a scale, more than $15,000 in suspected drugrelated money and a 9mm Glock handgun with a loaded 30-round magazine.

‘FOR MY GIRLFRIEND’ Airport security at Berlin’s Schonefeld Airport evacuated a terminal on Aug. 7 after spotting “suspicious content in a luggage piece” during a routine X-ray, according to CNN. The bag’s unnamed owner was summoned, but he was reluctant to identify the mysterious items, calling them just “technical stuff.” After an hour-long investigation involving the bomb squad, the 31-year-old traveler admitted to federal police that the items were sex toys, including a vibrator, he had brought along for his girlfriend. He was allowed to proceed with his trip, and the terminal reopened shortly afterward.

COMPELLING EXPLANATION In Bluffton, South Carolina, 32-year-old Lauren Elizabeth Cutshaw informed police officers she was a former cheerleader, sorority girl, good student and National Honor Society member after they pulled her over at 1:45am on Aug. 4 for running a stop sign at 30 mph over the speed limit.

According to The Island Packet, she also told officers she shouldn’t be arrested because she’s a “very clean, thoroughbred, white girl.” She said she’d had only two glasses of wine, but then allowed, “I mean, I was celebrating my birthday.” Police arrested her anyway and booked her into the Beaufort County Detention Center. ■

ith Hurricane Lane barrelling down, we find it time to say aloha to MauiTime co-founder Mark D’Antonio. The simple truth is there would not be MauiTime without Mark. Mark was the first person to believe in the opportunity for two school

friends to move to a foreign place and create a media company. Mark spoke music to musicians and art to artists in a way that drew so many people into our efforts with MauiTime.

As you can clearly see from the small sample of photos in this piece, Mark lived life to its fullest. He looked for and

found the good in people, and wanted to share positive stories with everyone.

Many publications have come and gone since Mark and I started MauiTime, but we, along with countless others, birthed something special.

Despite the weather, we’re planning a celebration of life this weekend. On

Sunday, August 26, at Launiupoko Beach Park we will come together to remember Mark with a paddle-out at 11am.

Stick around for a prepared lunch and potluck, and share stories with friends.

It seems surreal to be saying farewell and paying tribute to Mark D’Antonio.

He was much too young, far too talented, and, frankly, too ridiculously handsome to be gone so soon. He was also very kind and funny, and embodied the aloha spirit. I met Mark for the first time in 1996 when he was the drummer/percussionist for the uber cool, college band Sunset Red – a Chico band that routinely sold out shows and venues throughout California. This was the band’s first live tour on Maui.

At the time, I was the morning show host of Maui’s alternative rock station, The Point 101.1 FM, and Sunset Red was invited to the studio for an interview and to talk about their upcoming live shows at Lahaina’s legendary World Cafe on Front Street. The guys in the band were great, there was a lot to talk about, and I remember the interview ran long.

But it was after the interview that Mark and his soon-to-be business partner Tommy Russo stayed behind at the station, and shared their vision of relocating from Chico to Maui and launching a new publication: an island lifestyle, alternative newspaper similar to those that were the voices of college towns and hip cities across the country.

“MauiTime.” Brilliant name, innovative concept, and just what the island needed. I was excited for Mark and Tommy, and at the same time, cautiously optimistic about the prospect of the publication being a profitable venture.

After all, the Hawaiian Islands had taken a few economic hits in recent years with the Gulf War and devastation of Hurricane Iniki. Tourism wasn’t what it had once been, and many businesses were doing all they could just to keep their doors open. Advertising in an unproven publication that appealed to “surfers” would be a difficult sell for upstart, long-haired Californians.

However, any uncertainty about MauiTime Weekly didn’t stand a chance against the blind faith and youthful optimism of its soon-to-be publishers, and roughly one year after our radio station brainstorming session, MauiTime came to fruition and released its debut issue in 1997. The rest, as they say, is history.

Over the years, I had the pleasure of working with Mark and Tommy on numerous events that The Point 101.1 FM and MauiTime co-promoted: battle of the bands, live concerts, nightclub events, and one that was near and dear to my heart – the Endless Summer Annual Longboard Surf Classic that I created and co-promoted with MauiTime . Among his many talents, Mark was also a brilliant graphic artist and he donated his time creating the iconic logo we used for each year’s event. The surf contests broke attendance records at Launiupoko Park, and traffic along the Pali highway was ground to a halt most of the day.

This was a magical time on Maui.

Lightning in a bottle, and I’m proud to have been a part of that – and feel privileged to have known the creative spirit of Mark D’Antonio. His business partner Tommy Russo continues to carry the torch for MauiTime , and it

has been inspiring to see the “surfer” magazine evolve into one of the most influential, policy changing publications in all of Hawai‘i.

Mark’s legacy will always be a part of that, in addition to all of the other accomplishments he celebrated in both business and the music industry.

-Glen Gerrard (Thuncher) After two days of mostly shock and confusion, I just had my first legit breakdown. Losing a close friend never gets any easier, even the older you get.

I just finished writing a letter to our work colleagues letting them know of the passing of Mark D’Antonio, and the act of having to hit “Send” on that letter was just too much. It made it too real.

Having to tell the entertainment companies that had been hiring us as a DJ/ Conga duo for the last 12 years… like there’s no escaping the reality of it now.

He was supposed to be here on Maui at the end of the month to do a wedding with Del, then the three of us were gonna do another Future Funk party while he was here. What happened to all of that?

Mark and I go back to 1992 when we met during our college years in Chico, California. His band and my band shared the stage countless times throughout Northern California, Tahoe, and Reno area. We were neighbors directly across the street from each other for a portion of that time. My band practiced in the basement of his house. He even took some drum lessons from my dad a couple of times. We were aspiring musicians chasing the lifestyle that being wannabe rock stars afforded us.

Too many good times to remember... but I find myself trying to sort them all out now, to take stock, and hold on to them as if they were invaluable. Indeed they are. And I’m pretty sure some college-ing happened somewhere in there too, in between all the gigs and all the parties... if y’all knew Chico like we knew Chico, then ya’ll know what I’m talkin about.

He moved out to Maui maybe about five years before I did? He was one of two people that I knew when I moved here. Tommy Russo is the other half of that equation. They started MauiTime mag together. It was a real treat getting to reconnect with him out here as a DJ/ Conga duo. We played quite a lot of gigs around the island (with Del on quite of number of those also, as a two-DJ + Conga trio on our Future Funk sets), but the opportunities that (mostly) Envisions Entertainment afforded us to play together allowed me and Mark to spend some quality time on some really quality gigs throughout the islands that we, no doubt, wouldn’t have been able to play otherwise.

So for that… for all of that, I am truly grateful. I know it sounds cliche, but if there was anyone I ever knew that really lived life to the fullest, Mark D’Antonio was that person. Mark had a life “Volume knob” that went up to 11. I don’t think he knew how to do anything halfway. He was good at everything: He

was an incredibly skilled musician, an incredibly smart, witty person; he was good at being nice and genuine, and he was very good at not having any sort of ego about any of it.

Mark D’Antonio, everyone that knew you, loved you… and we always will.

-Jay Langworthy (Boomshot) I was lucky enough to work with Mark D’Antonio very closely on a variety of different projects over the past 20 years.

Ideas and creativity always flowed effortlessly between us. We kept everything light and fun! He worked tirelessly with me for some really long hours to make everything perfect. He edited and published all of my articles for MauiTime Weekly. He did the layout and design for all of my CD covers.

He played percussion on some of my tracks as well [like “Daydream” by Kika Kane]. Very cool playing here! His spirit and talent will be missed by MANY who feel like we’ve lost a good brother! It does seem like a daydream. Rest in peace, Mark, and a hui hou.

-Clark Naberschnig I’ve known Mark for just over half of my life. We met in college, graduated together in 1994, then went on to play in the band, Sunset Red, for over a decade.

When you’re in a band for that long, you can’t coexist by just being polite. It’s like being in a marriage and working with your spouse every day. Since Mark came in to the band with long hair we would sometimes put him in a skirt. We had a very unique connection.

We were more than just five musicians who came together to play music, we were the closest of friends. We traveled together, roshambo’ed for shotgun, flipped for the spot on the couch or driving duty, carried our gear up endless flights of stairs, and laughed ‘til we cried.

I have hundreds of stories about Mark and so many incredible experiences on stage together. We would get to the end of our set and for some reason none of us wanted it to end. Club owners hated when we would take the last song, and just when you thought it was going to end, launch into the land of make believe from which there was no return.

This was Mark’s happy place.

We would speed up and approach total chaos. Then this incredible thing would happen. The floor would rise up under our feet and we would settle in this whole new musical dimension. Mark would see the light go on in my eyes and this huge smile would appear. He would then yell, “Sully, welcome!” It was as if he had been to this magical place before and was taking comfort in showing me around now that we had arrived.

That was Mark, a gracious host in the 4th dimension of music. Eager to bring you in, and show you what he had learned and what he was working on. While packing up the equipment he would say, “That was like the New Year’s Dead show in ’89, except totally different.” His quick wit and humor were always packaged with humility and confidence – the perfect combination that defined his character.

He was always there to share a new experience and invite you in to his beautiful world. He was a true creative genius.

This layered dimension made Mark complicated. Having your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground poses challenges to even the strongest committers of balanced imagination. Mark was a true “music maker, and a dreamer of dreams.”

One of the trademark songs in our set was called “Mental.” It’s about tapping in to your true self and not wearing a pretentious mask or being phony.

Ironically, we started this thing where we would put on a mask or wear a costume before we started the song. This ritual started taking on a life of its own. Being the brilliant underappreciated rhythm section that we were, we decided (by ourselves), to bring my father’s backyard leaf blower on stage as an added prop. At the perfect time during the ending Mark snuck up behind me and strapped this engine on my back. He then proceeded to pull the cord in an attempt to get it started on stage.

A look of confusion came over his face when he realized he needed more leverage. In a moment of genius, he placed his foot on my floor tom (drum) and pulled with all his might. The floor tom tipped into several symbol stands and everything came crashing down… including Mark. The blank look from our fellow bandmates and audience gave the word “priceless” a new meaning.

Being the true wingman that I am, I instantly turned and gave him a look of violation as if I knew nothing about our premeditated plan. With a confused half grin, I said, “Dude, what are you doing?”

His complete ownership of this failed event was classic Mark!

He humbly shrugged his shoulders and said, “Sorry about that, the stage was getting a little dusty.”

I could go on and on about this guy.

I know how much I learned from him and it’s overwhelming to see the outpouring of respect from so many people he touched during his life. What bothers me is I sensed he was holding on to something. Afraid of being vulnerable to the core. He was guarding something and it was affecting his inner light’s ability to shine.

“Some birds weren’t meant to be caged, their feathers are just too big and too bright, the part of us that knows it’s a sin to keep them caged must rejoice at the sight of flight.”

-The Shawshank Redemption Although I miss him dearly and want him here for myself, I am rejoicing at the sight of flight. His feathers were too big and too bright to keep caged. Spread your wings my friend and, with that big smile, soar in the endless notes of your greatest symphony. I love you and will never forget you, Mark. You are a true, authentic, shining star in a dark world.

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship MAUI’S KENDALL ‘DA SPYDER’ GROVE READY TO FIGHT IN BKFC 2: A NEW ERA ON AUG. 25 about his mindset entering the competition: “I always try to keep myself in shape, you never know when an opportunity may arise for me to fight again. Kendall Grove’s work ethic is second to none, as he not only maintains himself in “fight-ready shape,” but also juggles work and family duties. Kendall has had more than 40 professional MMA career fights, many of which are legendary. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship: The Ultimate Fighter 3 Champion is still regarded as one of the most highly decorated fighters to ever come out of Hawai‘i. To most, it’s incredible that Da Spyder still finds the motivation to compete as a top-tier athlete after all these years, while still maintaining dad duties as a father of six.

aui-native mixed martial arts fighter Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove is always eager to put on a good show. Nerves, anxiety, and adrenaline run rampant in the mind of an athlete entering the octagon or stepping on the mats before a fight, but this weekend Da Spyder faces a new challenge.

Months ago, the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship Organization contacted Grove about an upcoming opportunity to fight in the new organization. BKFC later announced that Grove, an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bellator veteran, signed an

exclusive contract to make his debut at the promotion’s event, “BKFC 2: A New Era,” which will take place at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi on Aug. 25.

After being released from Bellator MMA (the second-largest MMA promotion in the world featuring notable talent such as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida) earlier this year, many fans and critics believed Da Spyder’s fight career was coming to an end. After interviewing Kendall for this piece, there’s no doubt that his fierce competitive spirit is not leaving just yet.

Feldman expressed excitement about bringing Da Spyder over to BKFC, believing the organization’s rules will allow Kendall to exemplify his edgy fight game and long stature in his first bare knuckle bout. “This is a great opportunity for MMA veterans, like Kendall, who can bring excitement to the sport as the rules are based for a fast-paced brawl, allowing fighters from different backgrounds and martial arts to display their stand up game,” said Feldman.

BKFC is a new organization with a rule set that got combat sport fans jumping out of their seats when announced. Outlawed since 1889 in the United States, the seemingly primitive London Prize Ring rule format from the days of Jack Broughton, father of English Boxing, and John L. from all sorts of different genres. With ten songs each performed by a new talent, from Kalani Pe‘a, to Starr Kalahiki, to Josh Tatofi, just to name a few, each artist features their connection to a C&K song in the liner notes, and their own take on the music in the track.

The CD finishes with a bonus track of the crew singing “Friends” along with Kapono.

“It’s getting a lot of airplay everywhere,” says Kapono. “I am proud of the artists with their participation, respect and love for the music. Their passion for it. The recording has been doing very well. We are really happy.

There are people from the mainland trying to get it but they don’t have FHB over there.”

For now the CD and vinyl album is only available by walking into a First Hawaiian Bank. In lieu of that, you can experience some of the music at the concert.

“We usually do this concert once every two, three years, and it’s usually called “Back In The Day” where we get the all the iconic artists to songs,” says Kapono. “We come and do their hit songs, We just thought that maybe it would be a good idea to do ‘Henry Kapono and Friends’ and invite the younger artists as well. For me it becomes like a bridge between both generations where there is a lot of love and respect for all that we have done. I think that is such a great bridge between both gaps. Bringing everyone together as family and friends. That’s what it seems to have been. Everyone is so stoked to be a part of this project and a part of this concert.”

Paula Fuga sings the 10th track, “Song for Someone,” on the album. She remembers the first time she heard the song, the impression it made on her young mind, and how it played a big part in her psyche of songwriting. When Kapono called her at home in Pupukea, before

he even had a chance to ask her about the project she felt compelled to share her experience with his song.

“I said ‘Hello’ and he is like ‘Hey Paula this is Henry Kapono,” recalls Fuga.

“I was like ‘Oh hi Henry!’ but I was thinking, ‘Oh my god it’s Henry Kapono calling me!’ He said, ‘Hey have you ever heard of my band Cecilio and Kapono?’ I was like ‘Of course I have! I love your guys’ band, are you kidding me?’ but then I said, ‘In fact before you say another word I have to tell you this story.’ and he said, ‘OK.’” “I was about 4 or 5-yearsold, I was cruising with my mom at a friend’s house,” Fuga says. “She and her friend

his Sunday, Maui’s Yokouchi Pavilion and A&B Amphitheater will host a historic show blending generations of Hawai‘i’s musical artists onto one stage. [Ed. note: Henry Kapono and Friends has been postponed until September 16 due to Hurricane Lane] The show’s main billing, Henry Kapono, has been the driving force beneath this concept to bring renowned Hawaiian music artists together with the up-and-coming to sing the “Soundtrack of Hawai‘i.” Kapono has sparked a whole new era of C&K fans with a clever recording idea he had brewing with his wife Lezlee Ka‘aihue. That got First Hawaiian Bank interested too.

“It all got started with First Hawaiian Bank about a year and half ago,” says Kapono. “They called us in and asked us if we wanted to do a project with the music community. My wife and I came up with this vision about having the millenials and younger artists do C&K songs, because these songs have been around, thank god, for 45-something years. FHB thought it was a great plan and we went forward and started recording this year.”

The result was a highly successful CD called The Songs of C&K K that features tracks from a range of talented

“I remem remember all the visuals I had, hearing the lyrics. It is a song about not being able to write a song. It just blew me away. I was like, ‘This is so cool! He is writing a song, about not being able to write a ssong. One day I am going to write a song like that. th ’ It’s just so crazy to me looking was one of my first times that I really back, that w about the songwriting process. I was 4 thought abo 5-years-old, thinking about breaking down a or 5-years-o song. I told him that.”

Kapono says every artist had their story Kapo about their t connection to the songs. He really gave the artist free reign to develop their oown sound, and everyone chose a unique song. Fuga says this was a huge lesuniqu son in humility and trust.

“In m making this project, he told us, now it says Fuga. “Our song ended up you sing it,” being 6 minutes.

I don’t even know if it will mi get any time tim on the radio. Nobody paid attention to the time! We were all just going with the emotion emotio and the feeling of it and it is so raw. For me m it was a big lesson in itself to let people take from you. To have that humble attitude, that th humble heart, to let somebody take their ssong, and you know make it yours.

Its like copying a painting. It’s not going to be cop the same. Just J the thought that he would let go of the control over his work and let us take c the reigns. Give it over to the next generation.

It was cool that he let us be ourselves.”

Kapono’s Kapono banker suggested that he set up a nonprofit foundation, an idea that he ran with. The Henry Kapono Foundation will earn H proceeds from fr the CD and other projects.

“Our m mission for the foundation is to support the th community through art and music,” says K Kapono. “This allows us to give to other artist artists and musicians, the community,

the schools. Helping kids find their dreams, helping elder musicians with health care.

There is so much to do, we just want to try and help and be a part of that situation.”

Fuga says just being a part of this collaboration has already been such a fruitful experience. There was the sweet moment when Kapono got to tell her what “Song for Someone” was about, a day where he tried to write a song for his mom at their home along Kapahulu, but distractions arose.

“What he did for me is incredible. It’s not so much what I learned from him right now, but what he had taught me already.

He did that for me in writing that song so long ago. He did that for me when I was four and I was with my mom, and the radio. When I heard it I thought consciously about writing music. Writing my own songs. This is my moment to honor him and that song, and that connection that I feel with it. It was such a special thing to be able to sing it and think of his mother and him. He gave everyone room and space to do whatever they wanted to do.”

The Meg A fun summer B-movie that knows it’s a B-movie ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 113 Min.

here’s a megalodon-sized reason The MEG is a better movie than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom: It’s a Jason Statham versus a giant shark B-movie that knows exactly what it is, has a cheeky sense of humor about itself, and is free of franchise-building expectations (or any high minded expectations). Fallen Kingdom is a joyless, here-we-go-again sequel to a reboot, needed to bridge a trilogy nobody asked for. Whereas Chris Pratt’s lavish trilogy is running out of steam (and lava), The MEG is aware that it’s junk and doesn’t have a T. rex sized budget, but goes above and beyond to entertain a popcorn-lovin’ summer audience.

Jason Statham stars as Jonas, a marine biologist who is summoned to lead a rescue after his ex-wife and two colleagues are trapped at the deepest end of the ocean. While Jonas is in the midst of his attempts to save lives, he realizes that his once-believed-to-be-crazy theory about a giant megalodon shark is indeed real. A greedy billionaire (played by Rainn Wilson) sees monetary possibilities but Jonas and his crew know their lives, and the world itself, is in great danger.

The MEG is based on Steve Alten’s novel MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror, an airport read that has been around since the late 1990s. While Alten’s book has Michael Crichton aspirations, the film adaptation cribs pieces from of Deep Blue Sea, Sphere, and Jaws 3; to the credit of the film’s director, Jon Turtletaub, it’s better than all of the above. Turtletaub (who made 3 Ninjas, Cool Runnings, and both of the National

Treasure installments) is no Steven Spielberg or James Cameron, but he’s clearly a student of those filmmakers and can ably stage gripping action sequences.

Less sturdy is the screenplay, overstuffed with dialog ranging from occasionally clever to completely stupid. There’s also the opening prologue, with sketchy special effects and shaky cam so extreme, I wasn’t completely certain what was happening.

Once the film settles into its premise, it’s fun and exciting. It’s also 20,000 leagues better than the Jaws sequels, or anything from the Sharknado canon.

Statham is in good form, even if he’s been playing the same screen persona since the first Transporter. He has a great scene at the mid-point, where his macho, “I’ll Be Right Back Speech” before plunging into the MEG-infested ocean is met with his grumbling to himself, “I am so

stupid.” He then sings a classic Disney jingle as he swims towards the giant monster. It’s a glorious bit and a lead up to the first of a handful of inventive, suspenseful action sequences.

Wilson is less effective as the apparent “comic relief” and the rest of the supporting cast is around to basically react to everything Statham and the shark do. The whole movie is easily stolen by Shuya Sophia Cai, who milks the role of the cute 8-year-old along for the ride, and Pippin the dog (played by a Yorkie named Kelly), whose now-iconic shark showdown is a comic riot.

While the CGI runs hot and cold (at times it’s vivid and scary, but overly cartoonish and underdeveloped in other moments), the scenes that matter most are truly spectacular. When the MEG attacks hordes of beachgoers in broad daylight, the sequence brings to mind the riveting open-

ing to Bong Joon-Ho’s 2006 The Host (one of the best monster movies ever made). The set up offers some stunning visuals, particularly when we get a view of the world that has been housing the MEG and other deep water wonders. To the credit of the filmmakers, the funniest moments appear intentional, including the cheeky title card that closes the whole thing.

If The MEG seems very of-its-time (namely, the end of the 20th century, when movies like this and Congo could play a drive-in double feature), then it’s a giddy example of the genre. If this is the definition of movie junk food, then it’s a nachos with so much beef, jalapenos, and chili cheese sauce, the paper container it comes in is about to break apart. In other words, a perfect summer movie. Don’t worry about how implausible it is – just buy a ticket, grab some snacks, and take a giant bite. ■

What you’re up to now is like turning up the air-conditioning so high you need to wear a sweater indoors.

You’re overcompensating, and it’ll probably backfire on you. Keep the air-conditioning at fifty degrees and you’ll likely catch a chill. Why are you trying so hard anyway?

Is whatever you’re trying so hard to prevent really so disastrous that it merits this much time, energy, and effort? I don’t think so. You have more important things to worry about. Save yourself the stress and the energy bills (both actual and spiritual). Just open the windows, and let whatever wants to happen, happen.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Don’t pre-judge. What you think are deal-breakers (and usually are), in this case might still be workable.

The key here is to keep an open mind about the person in front of you. Could s/he be the exception to the rule? The guidelines you’ve made for yourself haven’t actually gotten you very far in the past, so an exception is precisely what you need, someone who’s able to get away with breaking most of the rules. Letting someone with this much power into your life might be scary, I know, but you already play it way too safe.

Scare yourself by giving it a go. You know what fear is called when you embrace it? A thrill.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Stop making things so hard for yourself. Don’t go get a job in a pastry shop when your plan is to give up sugar. Give yourself more mental breathing room than that. Subjecting yourself to constant, compelling temptation is just about the dumbest thing you could do. Prove that you’re smarter (and less self-destructive) than that. Your goals are admirable.

Please set yourself up so that they’re likely to succeed, not crash and burn horribly. Still confused? I don’t know how to spell it out any more simply, but I’ll try: Self-sabotage is bad. Please make sure you’re not engaging in it, consciously or unconsciously.

Imagine you accidentally left the baby sitting in his car seat on the sidewalk next to the car at the last rest stop. The second you realized it, you’d tear over to the other side of the highway and race back as fast as you could, kicking yourself the whole time and freaking out until you knew the poor infant was safe. You wouldn’t give a crap about speed limits or traffic rules or anything like that, would you? This is similar, even if it’s less obvious. Don’t worry about looking stupid or desperate. Do what you have to do to make this happen, and most likely that will mean you need to run, don’t walk, and break whatever rules get in your way.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Stop ignoring the facts. What you’re doing right now is examining the scenario and deliberately blinding yourself, saying, “I won’t see anything that’s the color red.”

That’s excluding a lot of potentially important information, and isn’t going to lead to you making wise or insightful choices. Whether or not you find these particular facts and details distasteful is irrelevant. Your job here is to be sure you’re making sound, clear decisions, and those are impossible unless you open your eyes to everything, including the stuff you’d rather wasn’t part of the picture.

An abstract or impressionist painting has a beauty all its own, beauty it wouldn’t possess if it didn’t leave a certain amount of detail to the imagination. How much imagination must people employ when trying to figure you out? Up that total by 10-20 percent and you’ll be in good shape.

Stop telling yourself that you shouldn’t need what you know you do. That’s just a waste of time. Wishing you didn’t need to eat or love just can’t make it so. If your heart were a kitchen, you’d have the refrigerator door gaping and turned all the way up, and the oven wide open, set to broil. You’re not only burning the candle at both ends, but you’re working at cross purposes to yourself. Stop tripping yourself up. Decide what temperature this room ought to be, and turn off the oven or close the fridge. I know it’s hard for you make up your mind and commit to one direction, but it’s about time. If you own a business with employees, you’ll go nuts if you don’t trust them. Micro-managing everything will set you on a path to a nervous breakdown. Eventually, your best bet is to simply let go and believe that they’ll correctly do what you ask of them. The same holds true of every aspect of your life. Trying to control the minutiae of what happens when you’re not looking will really screw you up in the long run, even if you can get away with it for a little while.

Don’t delude yourself, though. For every second detail you attend to personally, you’ll piss off the person who would’ve taken care of it for you. Then, when you need them to come through for you, they won’t.

Trust them sooner, rather than later, before they decide to not bother being worthy of that trust.

What’s the point of buying a fancy phone that can do 8 million things, when you’re only ever going to use it for two things? Keep things as simple as you can this week. You don’t necessarily need all the bells and whistles, so why pay for them (really or metaphorically)?

Strip everything down to the bare minimum, and only add in ripples, complications and extras when you’re sure you need them. Be brutal. You won’t feel like you’re missing anything. In fact what you’re most likely to feel is a tremendous weight lifted from your shoulders.

You could half-ass it and choose the easy but purely temporary solution, or you could really dig in and fix things for the long-term. That would definitely involve
