Prioritizing Maui’s Wastewater Systems

In continuing to describe my achievements towards my priorities from my 1994 Campaign, one such priority was in “Seeking excellence in the development of the County’s multi-million dollar upgrade of the wastewater system.”

Let me share some of my background with you: I started working for the County of Maui on July 1, 1984 as a Plant Worker, which is the lowest position in the department. About 10 months later when I had enough time in service to quality for the next step, I applied for and received a promotion to Assistant Plant Operator. Soon after, I also started my role as the Department’s first Safety Officer.

I started documenting and creating solutions for unsafe conditions in the Treatment Plant. We started a Campaign to address as many health and safety violations as possible.

At the urging of then-Mayor Linda Lingle, and her Managing Director, Richard Haake, I reported the County to the State Department of Health where we received an $800,000 fine for various health and safety violations.

We, however, were able to turn this around to create a positive outcome. The State Department of Health required us to make many improvements and those improvements would count towards paying that fine.

One of my coworkers and fellow whistleblower regarding these health and safety violations, Bill Carroll, faced many threats and hardships. He was even sent to

jail on charges that the courts eventually ruled were without merit and he was released During this time, I also applied for, took classes and passed tests for Grade I, II, III and IV Treatment Plant Certification. I worked at the Lahaina, Kihei and Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facilities.

When I passed my Grade III Operator’s test, I was promoted to Assistant Plant Supervisor.

Later, after passing the Grade IV test, I achieved the rank of Plant Supervisor.

The timing of all of this was important, as the County, under Mayor Lingle, was getting involved with recycling on a large scale. We started working with Tim Gunter to create Maui EKO Systems, a composting facility, which uses the County’s Wastewater sludge, grease from grease traps, and green waste to create Compost.

When we ran into some challenges with the grease in the Composting, Bob King of King Diesel came up with a solution and formed Pacific Biodiesel to handle the grease.

I was also able to work with Tom Reed and Lloyd Gilliom in starting a glass and plastic recycling facility.

I’m proud to say that as Kahului Wastewater Treatment Facility’s Plant Supervisor, we purchased 100 tons of recycled glass for landscaping and it is still in use today at the facility.

• Maintain and upgrade all facilities • Work toward 100% alternative energy use • Move to clean effluent towards drinking water standards & quality

• Installed alternative energy systems at all Maui wastewater treatment plants • Re-engineer all of the transmission and collection lines for the Waste Collection systems to increase capacity to meet projected Community growth (based on 50-year growth projections) • Move treatment plants off of the Coastlines and towards areas where major population growth is projected to occur, as funding becomes available

My goals for Wastewater have included: • Reduce sewage spills • Achieve as close to 100% effluent reuse as possible

We have made great progress towards the following: • Started with a System that spilled almost daily to a current System where spills are very rare • Reduce the sludge taken to the landfill to nearly zero, through a waste-to-energy program • Reduce effluent from injection wells towards zero discharge • Increase reuse of wastewater to 100% • Increased efficiency in all County Wastewater Systems • Started with deep ocean outfalls and have progressed to tertiary treatment (creating water that is nearly “Drinking Water Clean”)

It takes many, many steps to reach each objective and sometimes, it takes decades.

We have made great progress towards achieving many of our goals and objectives.

MauiSphere BICYCLE SAFETY LAW SIGNED BY GOVERNOR Governor David Ige has signed HB2215, the Safe Passing 3 Foot law which requires motorists to provide a minimum of three feet of separation when passing a bicyclist. Washington DC and 36 states have instituted Safe Passing laws to help make roads safer for cyclists and all road users.

These laws directly address one of the biggest hazards to cyclists. According to the League of American Bicyclists, 44 percent of cyclist fatalities result from being struck from behind or sideswiped. The Hawai‘i law, which was signed on Jun. 20, is a direct result of a huge advocacy effort led by the Hawai‘i Bicycling League.

The league is Oahu’s oldest and largest cycling organization and has an active chapter on Maui.

“We are very excited about this news and grateful for support from our partners, the community, and especially for HBL for leading the tremendous effort,” said Saman Dias, Co-Founder and Chair of Maui Bicycling League. “This is a big step towards creating a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly Maui and ensuring that all users feel safe on our roads.”

The Safe Passing 3 Foot law amended the existing Hawai‘i Revised Statutes 291C-43, which already required safe passing. The law now specifically states that three feet is the minimum safe passing distance when a motorist overtakes or passes a bicyclist.

“The passing of HB2215 is a huge milestone for cyclists in Hawai‘i and we are proud to be part of the initiative to improve the safety, health and sustainability of our state and our island,” said the Maui Bicycling League in a statement. More than 300 individuals and partner organizations submitted testimony in support or attended the hearing to speak in person.

“The passage of this bill highlights our commitment to ensuring that cyclists are safe on our roads, and that Hawai‘i becomes a more bicycle friendly community,” said Gov. Ige. “I am happy to sign this bill and make Hawai‘i the 37th state in the nation to make this commitment.”

With a heavy heart, MauiTime Weekly says goodbye to MauiTime Co-founder Mark D’Antonio. Mark passed away on July 7, 2018 at his home in California. He will be missed greatly by his family and tribe of friends that had the opportunity to know him on his journey through life. Mark lived a blessed life and embraced the human experience with passion, touching many people’s lives and hearts along the way. Mark moved to Maui in 1997 to help create and publish MauiTime with his college friend Tommy Russo while enjoying the Hawai‘i life. A professional musician, Mark played conga drums with Hawai‘i’s legendary bands and musicians, frequently touring the islands doing what he loved. Mark always let it be known how lucky he felt to be living on Maui, having the opportunity to live his life like a movie. “Living the dream” were the words he used frequently to describe his life. Why are you a Republican?

For me, being a Republican is about less government. That’s why. I wanted more autonomy in the community. I’m very community-minded. I wanted to empower the people to take ownership. I believe that the less government we have, the better. Then it can let the land breathe, the people breathe. I feel that part of it is upholding the Constitution and the laws, which every Hawaiian will go back to: What happened in the past is a lot of why they’re unhappy with where we’re at, so if we have all these laws, why aren’t we keeping them? There are various things that made me want to run as a Republican but the way that I address it, especially in my community, is that I stay community-focused. Everybody knows that. People ask me in live interviews all the time, “Would you go against the party?” Absolutely! I hope anybody would go against their party.You don’t run for your party, you run for the people. You should be able to go against them anytime, because the voices of the people are what you’re supposed to represent.

What are three issues you would focus on?

Well if you look around, affordable housing and homelessness. They’re so connected, I would say they’re really one. We need to look at all the various pressures on our environment, whether it’s corporations trying to hog the water or corporations spraying pesticides and not wanting to disclose what they’re spraying on our families. Also, education: Our legislature has been derelict in its duty to adequately fund public education in Hawai‘i.

We used to have preschool in Hawai‘i and one of my opponents gutted preschools out of our public education system. We also could do much better around college and graduate school. I do see a way for our economy to bear offering students free education all the way through graduate school because when you think about it, when you pay your student debt back, most of that money is interest.

It’s leaving our economy, but imagine if you weren’t paying that money on student loans and you were spending it down at your local stores in your local community. Through the GET, that money is going to sustain the local economy, and it trickles and cycles through. So basically that’s an opportunity.

What have you done as a State Rep.?

This year we passed a measure to encourage the use of the correct Hawaiian place names and the spelling. We had an issue this year with people not having Hawaiian interpretation and forgetting that the official language is Hawaiian and English. That measure I worked on with some of the native Hawaiian professors and educators. Throughout my career as a legislator I think that many of my accomplishments are community-based.

We do annual young women prom conferences where I give out free dresses and address domestic violence. I do emergency preparedness. I do entrepreneur conferences.

I did a sex trafficking awareness statewide conference. I do community cleanups. I held my thirteenth one and I have hauled over 50 tons of trash and 75 abandoned cars. I’ve held 41 town halls because I want to hear the people’s voice. I want to hear about everything. I want us to really dig deep and get to some of the root issues.

What are your thoughts on the cost of living?

When I was on the Board of Education I asked a superintendent, “Do we have any state workers working full-time jobs in our schools whose own kids are eligible for free and reduced lunch from the federal government?” and she said, “Of course.” I mean how shameful is that, that our own state is perpetuating poverty on state workers and their families. We need to change that completely and take responsibility to pay people a livable wage. So yes, one job should be enough and right now the minimum wage of $10.10 – somebody would have to work two full-time jobs just to be considered very low income by the federal government.

So even though many of the legislators are patting themselves on the back for getting $10.10, that is like halfway there.

How are you different from the incumbent, Rep. Justin Woodson?

I think my background here on Maui makes a difference. I think that philosophically we do have differences. Now I grew up in a Christian household: I went to a Catholic preschool, Saint Anthony, and then a Protestant elementary, middle and high school so I understand where he’s coming from, but I do have a different philosophy on the role of the state. I think the state needs to treat everybody with dignity and respect, and that’s regardless of the colors of your skin, the depth of your wallets, the god of your prayers. I also think that as a representative for this district, your first allegiance should be to this district and then to Maui and then to the state. So there is a very different philosophy by which I would try to govern.

What do you think are the top three concerns of your district?

Well the feedback I’ve been getting as I’ve been knocking on doors are affordable housing, education, and kupuna care. People in the Central Maui, you know, there’s a lot of multi-generation households like the one I grew up in. Our schools are overcrowded.

Maui High is at like 120 percent capacity, and our population is aging. We have to take care of our kupuna, those who took care of us. That’s the feedback I’ve been getting and so that’s what I’ve been running on.

How do you balance the needs of different community members?

That’s part of why we have to have difficult conversations. My platform includes education, elderly care, the environment, and the economy, and I purposefully pick things that have a duality to them. Our keiki and our kupuna; the environment and the economy: things with tension to show that I am concerned about balance. I think one of the ways you address that is by having targeted growth and targeted areas of preservation.

For example you can concentrate where you want to focus your energies both on development and through preservation.

What did you learn from being on the Council in the past?

I learned the ability to compromise. It’s like being married to eight other people, but you know the more you work at it, the more you’re able to be effective and have everybody – and there’s no such thing as leaving people out, I believe in being inclusive, having everybody participate because everybody has good ideas. So the more everybody works together as a unit, we can get so much more done for the community. And that’s what I’m really excited about doing and I can’t wait to do it if I’m elected.

What are you proud of from your tenure on the Council?

I concentrated in the area of social services because that’s pretty much my strength and background. I have been on just about every single major board of directors for the various nonprofits in Maui County and so I’m very familiar with what the services that they provide. In fact I co-founded, in 1987, the nonprofit association. So this is kind of a brand new thing for Hawai‘i.

This enabled the various nonprofits to work together and to be stronger because they were putting their resources together when they went to the legislature or to the council when they needed to change laws or they’re asking for resources or money. They’re a lot stronger today as a group rather than working individually. I worked very much in the area of housing. We did not have a housing problem back in the ‘90s. We did not have a water problem back in the ‘90s. Back in 1998 you could buy a lot for $90,000 in Maui Lani. You could build a house for $90,000. So the house and lot would be a $180,000. It’s quite a difference from today where the average house is between six and seven hundred thousand dollars, which is clearly out of the reach of so many of our families. That’s something that has to change and will change.

How does your background as a community organizer influence you as a politician?

I think as an organizer you want to get things done. You want to organize people. You want to organize people because you can’t do it yourself. You’re not the expert in anything but you bring people together and you let them tell you how and what things need to be done. Organizing is just about getting people together – getting them together on an issue that you all care about and working on solutions to resolve that issue.

How would you prioritize items on the budget?

The budget has to be people-focused. It’s not about the profits, it’s about the people.

What do we try to manage? Are we trying to manage parking lots and make a little extra buck for the county? That’s not what people want. We want to have programs and nonprofits that are here to help the common folk.

I’m a working-class guy. I’m a single dad. When I get my taxes I want to see return. I don’t need more infrastructure for tourists, I need more infrastructure for the working-class people. We have a huge chunk of our budget that goes toward marketing to tourists. I believe that our economic engine is based off of tourism, but we’re breaking records every year with our amount of tourism coming in, the amount of money that tourism is making, so I think we’re pretty good with that.

We now have got to focus on the infrastructure: the affordable housing, better paying jobs, helping our kupuna, helping our children. You know my daughter’s future is: Come out of the high school, go into the hotel, go to the service industry.

And yet we have huge money coming in from Silicon Valley, these big industrial giants that are making money off computers.

Well teach my kid to do code or do something with computers! But instead the big money that comes to the island is making more waiters and more bellman and more service industry jobs. Honestly, you’re never gonna own a home if you’re gonna be a waiter for you know 20 to 30 years. It’s too hard for us when the homes cost half a million dollars

What is your background?

I’m a lifelong resident of Maui. I lived and I also spent time in other locations around Maui so I feel I know Maui very well, the place and the communities, and I just want to get more involved in the decision making that affects the working class citizens, the working class community, of Maui.

What is your background?

First Friday has been going on now for 10 years and I helped build it. In fact, I met MauiTime and they were part of my partners in terms of building the event. This project represents who I am: born and raised in Wailuku.

My father was a physician on Vineyard Street and we grew up here. All the main stores were here and this is where commerce was. I’ve been married for 30 years and I have a son who’s working as a data scientist in the mainland.

That is really the foundation of who I am. Community, family, values are all part of this and I was so thrilled when you told me that you’re gonna walk down Market Street from Main all the way down to Vineyard because it is truly the path of First Friday and I walked here many times over the nine years that I did this.

Who I am is community and the reason why I’m doing this is because one day I hope my son would be able to come back and live here and afford to buy a house on Maui and be a resident. I hope to provide that opportunity to the many people on Maui who live here and cannot afford to buy a house. I’m running for people like you and my son to one day be able to buy a house or have an affordable rental, because we have a shortage of rentals.

So one of the my main platforms that I’ve been running on is to support working families like us who want a chance to have a better life. Every decision that I make is for broad strokes for the future and affordable housing is super important. Right now there’s about 8,000 homes that are in the pipeline. There’s affordable homes to buy and we finally have affordable homes to rent, so we’re starting to get the big picture about the things that need to happen to support our working families. Those are really important things for me.■

How are you different from Alan Arakawa, who is also running for this seat?

I don’t know everything and I don’t presume to know everything. I think as the mayor he does know a lot. He has done a lot as the mayor, but the difference between us is I don’t always have to be miss know-it-all and I don’t presume to know everything. I would rather work with people and bring them together and talk with them, as opposed to dictating to them. I think that as a mayor he has done a lot for the county but he has had the power to do that. As a council person you are one of nine. I worked really well with people – that’s what organizing has taught me: talking, compromising, maybe giving up a part of something that I really want for the betterment of all. I think as a council person you have to work with others.

You have to play nice in the sandbox.

Sometimes the mayor has not been able to do that. There’s tension already sometimes with the council and the mayor has not been positive. My sense is that he really needs to be able to come to a place of listening, which is what I do really well, and come to a place of allowing others to take lead. I know I do that very well. I don’t always have to be in charge. I don’t always have to be the person that you go to for everything, but I can facilitate many of those things.

Why are you a better person for this job than the incumbent, Riki Hokama?

I would argue that he’s had over 20 years to fix the problems that we are facing and here we are 20 years later – not much has changed. If I had a job for 20 years and I had the same problems I couldn’t fix I think I’d be out of a job real quick.

How does being a teacher relate to being on the Council?

I’ve been a science teacher at Baldwin High for 12 years and we continue to get to know community in our teaching roles.

For instance, every year I teach students of friends of mine, people who I went to school with (I graduated from Baldwin High), and I teach the children of these families. I get to see what they’re doing now and maybe hear about what they want to do and then I can kind of visualize if Maui is available for them anymore or if they need to seek their opportunity somewhere else.

What are the issues you’d prioritize?

I really want to take a look at the water meter list and try and expedite that process.

I know it’s complicated, that they deal with about 60 people on that list per year and 50 percent of those people accept the offer and the rest maybe can’t afford it, or it’s too long, or things have changed since they applied which was six years ago or something. I want to take a look at that. As far as all of Maui, I’d like to look at some infrastructure issues such as putting the Pa‘ia bypass that the community wants. The communities that I’ve heard want the bypass that goes from across the airport, above Spreckelsville, out by the Mill and then all the way to by Maliko.

The DOT has chosen a different path and for financial reasons or historic reasons.

I think it can be done, that and other infrastructure, like moving Honoapi‘ilani Highway mauka – that needs to be done. These are all multi-million dollar, hundreds-ofmillion dollar, projects. So just look into ways to get these done.

During the 2014 World Cup, five friends in Durango, Mexico, made a pact to travel to the 2018 tournament in Russia. They saved their money, bought a bus, painted it in Mexico’s colors and booked passage for themselves and the bus on a ship going to Spain, where The Daily Mail reported, the friends planned to drive the bus to Russia.

Samen Kondorura was joined by dozens of male relatives mourning his mother’s death in North Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on June 15, as they carried her coffin to a lakkean, a wooden stilt structure where dead bodies are stored during traditional funeral ceremonies. But as they hoisted the coffin up a bamboo ladder, The Jakarta Post reported, the ladder broke and the coffin fell, striking people in the crowd, including Kondorura himself, who suffered a severe head injury and died on the way to the hospital.

CRYSTALLIZED BODILY FLUIDS At the Royal College of Art’s annual London fashion show in June, one graduate unveiled a unique approach to accessorizing garments: crystallized bodily fluids. ART MAKES A STATEMENT To kick off an exhibition focused on the opioid crisis at his Stamford, Connecticut, art gallery on June 22, gallery owner Fernando Alvarez and artist Domenic Esposito placed an 800-pound, 11-foot-long steel sculpture of a bent and burned spoon in front of the headquarters of Purdue Pharma, makers of OxyContin. AWESOME! On June 23, firefighters of Engine 642 of the Henrietta, New York, Fire District went the extra mile after responding to an accident in which the injured driver was a pizza delivery man, according to Fox News. “Once the patient was cared for and loaded into the ambulance, the crew decided

to finish the delivery so the pizza wouldn’t go to waste,” the fire department posted on its Facebook page. “If it’s not delivery it’s Di ... Fire dept?!”

OOPS! James J. Rynerson, 38, was being held in the Mesa County (Colorado) Jail in May after being charged with menacing, disorderly conduct and trespass. But on May 21, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported, sheriff’s deputies at the jail released him, having mistaken him for Marvin March, 35, a different inmate.

Jail staff gave Rynerson March’s belongings, and he wore March’s leather jacket as he signed March’s name to the release papers and left the facility. Rynerson’s wife was startled to see her husband in the garage at their home, and after he explained what happened, she convinced him to go back. She “personally drove him back to the Mesa County Detention Facility,” the report noted, and he was back in custody by 11 p.m., with new charges, including escape and forgery, added to his list.

GROSS! In this week’s installment of foreign objects stuck in body cavities: Mr. Li of China’s Guangdong Province went to the doctor on June 15 at Pingshan Hospital in Shenzhen after feeling discomfort and pain in his ear.

Using an otoscope scan, the doctor discovered a live cockroach burrowing into the 52-yearold man’s ear canal. “It’s still alive, still moving,” the doctor can be heard on video saying, according to The Daily Mail. She cut the roach into pieces to remove it and disinfected Li’s ear with alcohol in case it had laid eggs.

PSYCH! When Juan Ramon Alfonso Penayo, 20, of Santa Teresa, Paraguay, failed to return after leaving his home June 14, his family assumed the worst. The town lies on the border with Brazil, reported the BBC, and is a hotbed of illegal drug activity. Police found a charred body three days later and called Penayo’s family, who, despite being unable to identify the remains, accepted that it must be him and proceeded with funeral arrangements. As they mourned over his casket during the wake, Penayo walked nonchalantly into the room. The body in the casket was returned to the morgue, and Penayo’s family celebrated his return.

arlon Wayans will perform at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Sunday, July 22nd.

World-famous for the TV shows In Living Color, The Wayans Bros, and Marlon, as well as his roles in Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2, White Chicks, Haunted House, this American actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer is bringing a huge night of comedy.

MauiTime had a chance to do a Q&A with Marlon last week! Check out what Marlon thinks about his upcoming trip to Maui, his favorite comedians, what it’s like to work with family, his favorite “Fly Girls,” and friendship with Tupac.

MAUITIME WEEKLY: The last time you played at the MACC was in 2011 with your brother Shawn. What was your favorite thing about that trip?

MARLON WAYANS: I think that trip was so great for me because I didn’t know we had an audience in Hawai‘i. I didn’t know how big it was. That was in the middle of us still building, and when all the people came out, I was like, “Oh, damn.” I didn’t know we had love in Hawai‘i, ‘cause you know, Hawai‘i is still America but it’s kind of off coast. And then I realized, there’s a lot of people that smoke weed in Hawai‘i, and we do a lot of movies that appeal to the weed smokers, so therefore, I should’ve thought that out of anywhere, that’s where I’m going to have the big-

gest audience. And the straight up people, they’re so cool and chill and you know they give you those two fingers – not the middle finger, you know I’m from NY – the hang loose two fingers. I like the vibe and the people, they walk around with smiles. Hawai‘i can kick some ass – they all do some kinda MMA. MTW: Is there anything you’re looking forward to while you’re here on island?

MW: I like to visit Hawai‘i when I can. It’s a very peaceful, Zen kind of place. It’s like the closest place in America to what God made. It’s just beautiful. It’s the only place I’ll go hiking. I don’t like walking, but Hawai‘i’s so pretty, so why not. I go golfing. I don’t ever go golfing in my life, but when I’m in Hawai‘i, I’m like “Damn…” I can just hit this ball for like five hours and just look at how beautiful this place is.

MTW: What’s your favorite cocktail?

MW: I like tequila straight up with ice. I usually like a good tequila like Jose Cuervo Reserve or 1942.

MTW: What can Maui look forward to for your show? Will the content be all ages?

MW: I don’t think I’m a PG stand-up. I’m more PG-13. I like to curse sometimes, it’s not crazy sexual, but I don’t know where I’m gonna go. So, I would say 18+ unless you have really cool parents… ‘cause you know in Hawai‘i parents be hittin’ the blunt early.

MTW: Do your close friends have a nickname for you?

MW: Sometimes they call me Hyman Roth.

They call me Hyman, and here’s why. In The Godfather, Hyman Roth always took care of his friends and he always made sure that his friends got rich, too.

MTW: Do you have a favorite comedian from Hawai‘i?

MW: No, but I’m going to say Richard Pryor because he spent so much time in Hawai‘i.

MTW: Who are your all time favorite stand-up comedians?

MW: Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, my big brother Damon, Shawn and Keenan, George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Jim Jefferies, Erik Griffin, and Sydney Castillo.

MTW: Nike or Adidas?

MW: Nike MTW: I’ve read that you have 10 siblings. How did you all get involved in acting and comedy?

MW: If you ask me which sibling I like better, you’re trying to get me killed. Growing up, we were all comedians. Like in school, we were all class clowns. We all went to the same school, and I remember that in every class we had, all the teachers would be like, “Oh, no, another Wayan,” and they’d give me detention based on what they thought I would be doing. Keenan was the first one that was like, “We’re going

to get into comedy.” And, we all followed.

MTW: You attended Howard University in Washington, DC. Did you always want to do acting and comedy?

MW: Yes, I did. I knew since the first grade that I wanted to be a comedic actor. There was nothing else for me. I love acting and it’s something I always thought I was going to do. I was thinking something like an I Love Lucy show. I always wanted to star in movies like Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey. I just knew at a young age what I wanted. I went to Howard for acting and filming. This was at the time that In Living Color was on TV Sunday night; we’d shut down everything and watch In Living Color. Everybody would be like, “Yo, your family is stupid.” Which is a compliment in the black community.

MTW: What is it like to tour and work with family?

MW: I love working with them all. They’re all so different. Me and Shawn just have a magnetic chemistry – I think because we’re only a year apart. We have the same point of reference with life but different. I love working with Shawn, but I really like working with all of my family. We laugh a lot. On the stage and off.

MTW: Do you manage your own Instagram account?

MW: Absolutely, I manage my own account.

MTW: Your brother Keenan created

MW: I’d say White Chicks. We did the impossible. We did a movie with two black guys playing two white girls. We were acting like it was summertime in the Hamptons, even though we filmed it in the winter in Canada. The fact that we pulled that movie off, it’s so hard to do. We slept three hours the whole time.

something negative, but then find the positive in it. You have to look at your life and be like “What’s funny about it?” For me, looking at my life, I just took my worst situation and made it my best. Break-ups can be terrible, but we’re actually closer in our break-up than when we were together. You have to be with somebody to love somebody. I think it’s fine to just love people unconditionally. The show’s backdrop is about divorce, but it’s really about how to keep your family together.

MTW: What was your favorite scene in White Chicks?

MTW: What is the most unexpected thing about being a father?

MW: The dance battle and the bodega sketches. And, the date scene at the restaurant.

MW: That children don’t listen to a program. You need to listen to kids, and not them listening to you. We’re so worried sometimes about them listening to us.

Sometimes kids teach you, and you have to learn that every kid is different and you have to treat them as human beings. You have to listen to them. There’s no formula for raising your kids.

MTW: Of all the films that you’ve starred in, which one are you most proud of?

MTW: How long did it take to get into makeup as a “White Chick”?

MW: 7 hours everyday.

movie. I remember I humped a stuffed animal. I did a menage with a stuffed animal in Haunted House 1, and then I banged a doll in Haunted House 2. That was really improv. Me getting butt naked and going there with a doll and stuffed animal, it’s just, I have no vanity when it comes to comedy – I go for it.

MTW: What’s your favorite NFL team?

MW: Steelers.

MTW: Fifty Shades of Black (2016).

You co-wrote, co-produced and starred in this film. I’ve read that the film grossed over $22 million in the box office and was created from a $5 million budget. Did you always know that it would be so successful?

MW: I actually thought it was going to be way more successful than that.

In movie terms, there’s a single and a double. Haunted House 1 was a home run because we made that movie for $1 million and grossed $50-something million worldwide. Fifty Shades of Black, I thought because of what we were making fun of that it would have done better. I just love making movies, and as long as you’re successful enough to make another movie, then you’re good.

MTW: Did you read the Fifty Shades of Grey books?

MW: Yes, I did.

MTW: Do you think more men should read the books?

MW: Um, no. But, if they do, they’ll learn more about what’s romantic and sexy to women. What a woman thinks is sexy is different than what a guy thinks is sexy. Women think dressing up in a sexy costume is sexy. A man’s like, “That’s cute. I can almost see a tittie. Can you take that off?”

MTW: I’ve read that you were close friends with Tupac. How did you guys first meet?

MW: Yes, I was great friends with Pac. I met him on the set of Juice. He was working with one of my best friends, Omar Epps. Me, Pac and Omar, all three of us were in performing arts as kids. So where everyone else saw the thug rapper Tupac, I always saw the fun, loving, artist Tupac.

MW: No, it’s actually not coming out. I wish it was. That’s one movie we need a sequel to.

MTW: What do you love most about doing stand-up comedy?

MTW: Of all the people that you’ve worked with, is there any particular person that you’d consider a mentor?

MW: The freedom. In my show, I get to say what I want to say and how I want to say it.

MW: Everyone is a mentor in their own way. I learned a lot from Tupac, without him even actually teaching me. I learned a lot from him by just watching how hard he was. I think my brother Keenan will always be one of my greatest mentors. My brothers actually sit down and teach me.

MTW: Are you friends with Ice Cube?

MW: Yeah, I like Ice Cube. He’s cool. We aren’t like besties, but we’re really cool. I like “It Was a Good Day,” and my favorite Cube movie would definitely be Friday.

MTW: In 2017, your own sitcom, Marlon, was launched on NBC. Now in its second season, the show is loosely based on your divorce, and characters have been inspired by your family and friends. When you created this show, what was your goal?

MW: When I first created this show, my intention was always to make people laugh.

The intention was also to make myself laugh with something aspirational that’s based on

MW: Little Migo.

MTW: Do you have any words of wisdom for an aspiring actor, screenwriter, or stand-up comic?

MW: Hit the stage every night, three times a night. If you bomb, who cares, get back on the stage. You only fail when you quit trying. There’s a light at the end of every tunnel, just keep digging and stay a student. Read books on writing. Learn to write, learn to direct, learn to produce and create avenues and projects for yourself so you’re not kicking around waiting on Hollywood. Become your own machine.

In Living Color (1990-1994). You appeared on the show from 1992-1993.

What is one of your favorite memories from being on that show?

MW: Just the entire experience. It was like comedy college for me. Just watching Damon, Jim Carrey, Keenan and all these guys working their behinds off. I was only in the industry for maybe a year. Me and Shawn were like the rookies on the set. We learned to write, and we’d stay up ‘til five in the morning writing sketches. For the most part, every sketch that me and Shawn were in – we had to write them. That really trained us and taught us how to write.

MTW: Did you have a crush on any of Fly Girls? Who was your favorite?

MW: All of them. Pick one, name one, I love them all. Lisa, J. LO, and Carrie Ann. The only reason why I didn’t like Deidre is because she was dating my friend.

MTW: Jennifer Lopez then, or J. LO now?

MW: There’s a difference – I like them both.

One is a natural young beauty with a big ol’ butt. Back then, it was special for me. I never seen anything like that. As a black brotha, we love that. J. LO now – she’s still got the butt, but she has that money butt that’s been worked out, so it got a little more shape. I liked it when it was more like “Black-oww,” like an ass explosion.

MTW: After In Living Color, you went on to work on the sitcom The Wayans Bros with your brother Shawn. Do you feel like that was the project that really launched your own career?

MW: Yes, definitely. That and the movies.

When we did Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and Scary Movie, it all kind of started to come together.

MTW: Jim Carrey: one word.

MW: Brilliant. Or actually, Hilarious.

a worthy stop for their other goodies. Their cold-pressed goodness Love Buzz serves the coffee fix, and delicious smoothies like Jungle Love, Tiger’s Milk, and Magic Mint are the perfect thing for a hot summer day.

The variety of juices, smoothies, and creative concoctions like macnut milk matcha, noni and sparkling coconut water, and superfood boosts can meet any mood or taste.

The food menu is chock full of interesting and healthy fare. Food options at Maui Kombucha are diverse and aplenty, ranging from a raw bagel sandwich to raw

tasty dressings. A cooler is full of quick and tasty to-go options like a cashew carrot wrap, Thai spring rolls, and salads. The cooler also contains the raw vegan desserts, featuring choices like the chocolate avocado and orange creamsicle pies.

ucked inside the Cannery in quiet Haiku town, Maui Kombucha & Raw Vegan Fusion Cafe has been gathering a loyal following for years. Push through the screen doors and you’re faced with a bar full of regulars, upbeat service, and a myriad of delicious, healthy food and drink options, with the star of the show being their unique and delicious kombuchas on tap.

Maui Kombucha’s signature drinks on tap are carefully brewed with creativity and the

touted as having many health benefits. As it’s a fermented beverage, it does contain probiotics, and the research on a healthy gut biome and its myriad of health benefits is very promising. If you’re not in it for the health, taste alone might convince you to pick up a jar. Kombucha is earthy and fermented, and picks up tastes of whatever it is brewed with, so it provides some of the fond feelings of drinking a beer – without the hangover.

vegan pizza, smoothie bowls and cooked bowls, soups and salads. Smoothie bowls can be served with house-made, raw, gluten-free “Grawnola”, fresh fruit, and various protein powders. Cooked bowls include the Macro Bowl with adzuki bean tempeh, housemade sauerkraut, daikon, beets, kale, spiced chickpeas and pumpkin seeds, served with an orange tahini sauce.

The Burrito Bowl features cashew nacho cheese. Salads are large and served with

itself. The place feels sweet and safe, and the energy is good, probably because the customers are hopped up on probiotics and fresh raw fare. the bar was happy to walk us through the process of finding our flavors. Flavors range from edgy to sweet, and he gamely let us try pretty much every flavor before we settled on our favorites. Blue Jazz, Blood Orange, Ginger Turmeric, and sparkling coconut water. We sat down with our rainbow of kombucha light strawberry pink, mellow orange and sunlight yellow - and shared a healthy, fresh meal amongst the happy chatter.

Maui Kombucha’s brewers craft unique flavors like the Palo Santo, which is a wild wood native to Mexico. Palo Santo translates as holy wood, and it’s often used as an incense to purify and heal. The kombucha was woodsy and heady.

unique flavors shift often. The booch is fizzy and light with an edge to it. The brewers craft options ranging from crisp to fruity to earthy, with sweet and not-so-sweet options to serve all whims and moods. The “booch-tenders” are friendly and happy to let customers try different flavors before committing to a jar.

It’s best to bring your own mason jar or container, because that will save a few dollars so you can spend more on the good stuff.

No longer a fringe trend, kombucha has passed the longevity test and is here to stay.

That’s not to say it’s a new thing – the first recorded use of kombucha was over two thousand years ago in China, but the drink only gained popularity stateside in the past decade. The fizzy, fermented tea beverage is

'Won't You Be My Neighbor?'

remember once, when I was a boy, sitting with my Grandma as she flipped the dial and channel surfed her way into Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. It was a warm afternoon in her Florida condo and she had a tendency to suck me into watching whatever program she settled on (in fact, this was how I wound up seeing Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho for the first time). Once Grandma hit the local PBS station and that familiar theme music began jingling away, we sat on her couch, entranced. A subtitle appeared on the screen, announcing that today’s episode was about “Grandparents.” My Grandma turned to me and announced, “Oh, we’re watching this one!” She had a point. When Mr. Rogers has something to teach you, there’s no point in resisting.

I found revisiting the life and career of Fred Rogers in Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Morgan Neville’s simply marvelous documentary, to be equally irresistible.

Looking at Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood today, the long-running PBS children’s program created and hosted by Rogers is truly strange. The show would begin as Rogers, with his golly-shucks-oh-gee manner, introduced every episode inside his home while singing and changing sweaters. It quickly became much weirder, as a trolley would take the viewers into the Land of Make Believe, where we’d meet puppet characters like King Friday, X the Owl and the fiendish Lady Elaine (who, amusingly, is revealed to be based on Roger’s mother-in-law). As noted in Neville’s film, the episodes were awfully slow. Longtime

fans like myself can’t deny how goofy it all felt. Like Rogers himself, you’d question how sugary it all seemed, until the deeper meaning and inherent compassion would etch its way into your heart.

The footage speaks for itself: note how, during its initial run, there’s an episode where King Friday wanted to “build a wall” to keep everyone out(!) and later regrets his decision. There were also political allegories, direct conversations about difficult topics and a remarkable, defiant reference to racial bigotry… and that was just the first season. Neville’s documentary isn’t just a collection of golden clips, but a revealing, tremendously touching declaration of Rogers’ philosophy. Rogers wanted children to feel special, know they were loved, and feel empowered to pursue their dreams.

In Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, no stone is left unturned. The bizarre and surprisingly durable urban legend that

Mr. Rogers is a Navy Seal covered in tattoos (hence, the long sweaters) is addressed. So is whether his onscreen persona was an act or the real deal. We see a clip of the hilarious “Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood” SNL sketch, then hear Rogers’ reaction and his recollection of a priceless Eddie Murphy encounter.

Some documentaries don’t need to be seen on the big screen but this one does.

There is an epic scope within the 90 brisk minutes, full of unseen home footage and new interviews. Maurice Sendak-like animated segments, depicting Rogers’ child-like psyche, provide strong dramatic bookends. There are telling, surprisingly rowdy recollections from Rogers’ production staff. Eagle eyes will note that, in the archival, mid-1970’s footage, you can spot a very young Michael Keaton.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? shows a man who was a true original: both

genuinely square but somehow defiantly earnest, even progressive. A sequence in which we learn that Rogers once objected to the gay lifestyle of a cast member (he feared it could lead to PBS shutting down the show) but later changed his outlook, is especially affecting.

There are a lot of moments in Won’t You Be My Neighbor? that made me cry, and not merely because of nostalgia. Getting an unguarded glimpse of this true original, who stood for decency and love in everything he did, is refreshing. Rogers’ life story and this documentary provide a plea for kindness. That may sound corny, but Rogers knew long before his passing that the world around him would only become a scarier place. Here’s a man who made a career out of demonstrating how good we can be, for ourselves and one another. It’s impossible not to be moved by this film. ■

Some guy near Milwaukee came up with the insanely perverse and shortsighted idea of skipping out on bills by faking heart attacks. He got out of a bunch of cab bills, restaurant bills, and so on this way, before he was finally exposed, and had to face fines and prison. Clearly this fellow hadn’t thought through his plan very well, and I wonder how the hassle of an ambulance ride to the hospital seemed like a better deal than just shelling out $25 for his dinner. I’m worried that your own scales are similarly (although hopefully not so extremely) out of whack, probably because of your emotional investment in the situation. Get them retuned before you start making choices like Mr. I’m Having Chest Pains. How? Check in with your sanest and most cynical friend. They’ll set you straight.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

When I was in school, I resented having to waste time and energy on skills and subjects that had absolutely no relevance for me, like perfecting my handwriting or learning trigonometry. It made the whole schooling experience lose credibility for me, because even my teachers couldn’t explain or justify why we needed to be good at that stuff. Your credibility’s in question, too, as you seem fixated on points as academic and largely irrelevant as, say, learning Latin. Correct your course.

Make sure that the hoops you’re asking people to jump through are worth the effort they’ll have to make.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Everyone thinks they’re a natural at sex, but almost no one is. Of course, it’s possible to improve on your own, with experience, practice, and feedback, but for those not quite sensitive or imaginative enough, sex schools might be the answer. Workshops and classes are everywhere, teaching people how to stimulate their partner(s), talk dirty, or even kiss. I think it’d be great to be able to point those who really need it in the right direction. You’re likely to be asked to go learn something you think you already know this week. Instead of being resentful, give whoever’s asking you the benefit of the doubt, and go anyway.

While some Aries are indeed those things, most are actually quite loyal and steadfast, if easily distracted in the moment. One of my favorite columnists says that every relationship fails until one doesn’t. This simple truth can keep people from telling themselves the story that they suck at relationships and will never have one that works. While it’s useful to look at yourself (because you really might suck at relationships), it’s not useful to believe that you’ll never get into a more or less healthy, happy relationship – that can all too easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Look at yourself critically, and be the best person you can be, but this week be sure you’re not actually being too harsh, or sabotaging yourself. Remember this: Your own self-judgments and sabotage are much more likely to hold you back than your actual flaws.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Don’t paint meanness as a virtue. Sure, you might get a laugh now and again if your nastiness is clever enough, but if you can’t see the virtue of avoiding hurting people when you can, there’s something wrong. It’s very easy for those with sly wit to develop a habit of subtly or blatantly putting down others, just to get a laugh or artificially elevate themselves. What’s even worse is when they mock people who are obviously wounded by it.

While most Geminis I’ve known are generally sweet and generous people, I’ve met a few who make a practice of verbally demolishing everyone in sight. I don’t know if they end up unhappy and alone, but a part of me hopes so. Please make sure you’re not one of them.
