TRUCKER DUKES MEMORIAL RUN RAISES MONEY FOR WAILUKU GIRL Part of the proceeds from the Trucker Dukes Memorial 5K run and walk, held Mar. 17, were awarded to Kahalau Au Hoon, a 4-year-old Wailuku girl battling neuroblastoma. The 5K event was held in honor of Trucker Dukes, the 3-year-old Maui boy who courageously battled stage 4 neuroblastoma before passing away in 2017. The 5k community event attracted more than 500 participants, including “virtual runners” from around the world.

UVSC President Jamil Newirth, along with Trucker’s father Joshua Dukes and brothers Jedi and Mack Dukes, visited the Au Hoon family in Wailuku to deliver the check and spend time with Kahalau who was home briefly between her cancer treatments on Oahu.

The Au Hoon family said they are grateful and that they will use the money to help pay medical bills as Kahalau enters her second year of treatment for neuroblastoma.

The Trucker Dukes Memorial 5K was organized by volunteers of UVSC, a Hawai‘i-

based 501(c)(3) nonprofit helping cancer fighters live on. UVSC was founded in 2015 by Maui natives Newirth, a cancer survivor once diagnosed with terminal glioblastoma, and Chris Thibaut, whose father founded TS Restaurants and passed away from cancer in 1998. UVSC’s mission is to provide hope by raising funds for individuals fighting cancer, as well as supporting cutting-edge research for a cure. UVSC stands for U vs Cancer, but also Us vs Cancer. The dual meaning highlights how important it is for a community to rally around those fighting the disease. UVSC raises money for individuals diagnosed with cancer by bringing together a community of resources to support them, while also helping fund innovative research for a cure.

The 5K run and 1-mile walk was non-competitive and was organized as a celebration of Trucker’s life. A little over 60 years ago, I grew up in a very rural community here on Maui.

Plantation Camps were the center of housing and were the “Big cities” of the island in areas such as Upper and Lower Paia, Puunene, Wailuku, Sprecklesville, Lahaina, Haiku, Hana, Kaunakakai and Lanai City. The movie theaters,

bowling alleys, grocery stores, hardware stores, banks, sugar mills or pineapple canneries, etc. were located in these areas.

The population of Maui County was under 35,000 residents and agriculture was THE Economic Engine. Everyone respected each other even if society was basically split into two categories – management and

labor. Despite those divisions of economic status, there was still respect and civility. We worked together, celebrated special occasions together, and were there for each other when there was a death in the family. Even major ailments elicited a sense of unity and the community would band together to help each other.

Race, religion, cultural beliefs all co-mingled and we all lived amicably side by side. No group had a majority and no one cared.

We made friends with everyone.

Fast forward to today and we see that much of that civility and respect of each other is being threatened.

Social media is full of vile, hateful, and demeaning comments, deliberately delivered to divide and demonize opponents. Facts and fact checking don’t seem to be important anymore. Anything nasty or hateful is cheered and mob mentality seems to prevail. These cult-like groups cultivate bullies and celebrate bullying tactics and action. Fake news to bolster their claims to elicit anger and aggressive behavior from others has become commonplace.

This behavior seems to revolve around those who have decided that they do not wish to embrace the culture and local ways (despite what they say), but want to change and mold our society into what they consider to be their ideal. They wish to take control of all aspects of

society and to gain all the power.

They promise to deliver anything and everything, but in reality, our community has limited resources and funding and we must follow the laws. For example, I would love to repave every street in our County today, but it’s not financially feasible, without collecting a lot more taxes than we currently do. When paving roads, we must obtain all the proper permits and that takes time, too. Also, some roads are privately owned and the owners wish to keep them that way.

I would love to have our community grow 100% of its own food, but this will take a lot of time to accomplish. Land, equipment and labor are all very expensive and it’s very difficult for a farmer to make it profitable.

If we stopped importing all the food that we import today, how many people would survive?

I would love to return all water to it’s natural source. However, if the County stopped delivering water to homes, how many people would be willing to go to streams to collect enough water for his/her home and to treat it properly before consuming it?

What we want must be balanced with what is practical and reasonable.

Protecting Maui County’s Families As a farmer myself in the late 1970’s I brought Federal Agricultural Support programs to small farmers. I was elected to Maui County’s Federal Soil and Water Conservation district’s Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services Committee (ASCS). I fought for Conservation and Agricultural Production programs at the local level. We were the First State to get Federal Conservation funds to be allowed to be used for Agricultural Production Increases.

Wind breaks, irrigation main lines, and Molokai’s billion gallon reservoir all became eligible to Hawaii Farmers for an 80/20 matching grant – i.e., meaning 80% of the cost was paid for by the Federal Government and 20% by the farmer.

What is your background?

I’ve been here on Maui almost 40 years and basically grew up here because I moved here when I was 19 from California. But I’ve been a wife and a mother here – my kids were born and raised here, went through Maui High School, went through college. I am actually a grandmother now so I have two lovely granddaughters. My husband and I started a company about 23 years ago called Pacific BioDiesel. We got into the environmental movement and that segued into climate change which is a big issue, and so it’s a larger mission of sustainability and environmental protection.

From that you just get really involved.

I was involved with the school system on the State Board of Education back in the ‘90s because my kids were getting involved in school. So it becomes a calling getting involved. You know you really care about the place that you live and your community. I had a lot of community members ask me to run for office. This is one office I never thought I would want, but I literally had one person get down on his knees and beg me. It was a real impact having people ask me, from the community, to put yourself into service like this.

Why do you want to continue in politics?

This is where I was born. This is where I had my formative years and this is a community that I really love to have. We’re doing major work to renovate Wailuku, and a lot of the businesses are very familiar with me because this is where I grew up. It’s not a career in the politics to me. It’s an opportunity to be able to help people in our community to get things that need to be done, done. We go around to all the different communities and we talk to people in the different communities throughout Maui County and most of our projects come from people: “Can you fix our road? Can you fix the water line leak? We need to revitalize the businesses in Makawao and Pa‘ia, can you help us? We have parking problems in Pa‘ia, can you help us with the parking lot?”

No matter where we go there are challenges within the community that need to be corrected and we’re going about doing literally hundreds and hundreds of projects, most of which nobody’s ever gonna hear about. But at the same time there are a lot of really great projects that we worked on that the people should recognize. I was one of the three founders of the Maui Coastal Land Trust. Susan Bradford, Helen Nielsen and myself founded the Maui Coastal Land Trust way back, and because we formulated the Land Trust we now have about 80 percent of the North Shore about 80 percent of the South Shore in no-build, so we’ve been able to protect the coastline so that the public can have access to the ocean.

What makes you think you’re the right person for this job?

I know Kalani English personally, and I’ve got nothing against him as a person. I am looking at some of the legislation, though, that really comes back to the proper representation of the community. I question where his focus and priorities have been recently. I think there’s a few things I bring to the table. The capacity to focus upon the community means having strong community ties. For me as a father with a young family, the issues that are near and dear to my heart – things like affordable housing, economic development and how to do so in terms of opening up new opportunities outside of tourism. Things like technology.

As well as what’s really happening in the community. In terms of where we live up in Kula, my perspective is the more focused we can be on our own locality, the better connected we can be. So being able to be present in Maui County, having family in Hana and Moloka‘i: knowing what’s happening because I’m connected to the pulse of my community.

I have a background in both business and nonprofit, so whether we’re talking about fiscal responsibility and management or about community. Community organized and grassroots effort is one of the things that I see there’s a huge disconnect between what’s happening in our communities with these great organizations doing and what’s happening at the level of state. My perspective is that with a change of administration there is also a change in priorities. So to be able to see more consistent work that is upheld irrespective of administration is one of the things I’d like to see. That’s the opportunity that something like the senate allows me: to be able to be a consistent voice that advocates for our community and being able to assert those desires of the community in a level that allows it to be moving forward consistently.

What is your background?

I’m born-and-raised Maui girl, grew up in Lahaina. What makes me want to be a State House Representative is I’m a mom. I have two kids and I’ve seen so many of my friends and family have to move because they simply can’t afford to live here. So at the forefront of why I decided to run for office is for keiki for their future

What are the most pressing concerns in Maui County?

One of the most pressing concerns I think is our system. Our system is 50 years old. It just really isn’t working anymore.

There’s too much opportunity for cronyism and-or political influence. Even before I got on the council I was an advocate for a stronger Managing Director in our county and a lot more autonomy that separates the Managing Director term from the term of the Mayor so he or she doesn’t have to get involved in politics to keep their job. So you know as an advocate I was disappointed two years ago when the council did not pass that out of the committee and so that was one of the driving issues that convinced me that we need new blood on council.

What do you say to people who dismiss you as an "establishment" politician?

I’ve never been a good part of that. When I got on the council, Kalani English, Sol Kaho‘ohalahala and myself led the charge for nonpartisan, so that in council races and mayoral races, we’re not about political parties but we’re about what you gonna do for the community. If you look at my administration, we have a plethora of people from all of the different parties in all different walks of society working in our administration.

What makes you think it’s time for a change in representation?

We have a lot of systemic problems that are affecting our working-class families and for too long our leadership has been driven by special interests, corporations and lobbyists, and I think now more than ever we need leadership that is people driven, community engaged, and ‘aina based.

What was your experience as a community organizer advocating for SB 3095, the chlorpyrifos ban?

You know, going up against corporations and the special interests. They love to use fear tactics. They love to make it difficult for us who are just on the front line trying to protect the health of our keiki. What I learned from it is how much money is floating around the state capital. And so I’d like to change that. I think that whenever it comes to our keiki, when it comes to their health, it should never take five years to pass simple common-sense legislation to protect the health of our communities. But unfortunately, that’s what we have to deal with.

I definitely would support more pesticide regulation. Especially ones that are cancercausing chemicals or neurotoxins. I think that’s something that we need to look at but most importantly I think the best thing we can do in office to support our small-scale local businesses our local farmers and we need to get some of those lands back into the hands of the public so that we can create these new sustainable economic opportunities for the people of Maui. ■

News Of The Weird WAIT, WHAT? Visitors to Merlion Park in Singapore on June 8 were startled to see Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump enjoying a casual walkabout, hand-in-hand. On closer inspection, however, they would have seen the two men were Howard X, a Kim impersonator, and Dennis Alan, a Trump impersonator, who traveled to Singapore in advance of the June 12 summit meeting between the two real leaders. Janette Warokka of Indonesia was fooled: “It’s so shocking for me. I don’t know why those two famous guys come here,” she told the Associated Press. Airport officials were less amused when Kim’s doppelganger, whose real name is Lee Howard Ho Wun, arrived at Changi Airport. Wun said police officers searched his bags and detained him for two hours before releasing him with stern warnings to stay away from the summit. Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said Wun was interviewed for about 45 minutes.

THE LITIGIOUS SOCIETY If you’ve ordered a Quarter Pounder recently and specified “no cheese,” you may be interested in a $5 million class-action lawsuit brought against McDonald’s on May 8 by Cynthia Kissner of Broward County, Florida, and Leonard Werner of MiamiDade. According to the Miami Herald, the two are angry that they’ve been paying for cheese even though they ordered their sandwiches without it. The lawsuit contends “customers ... continue to be overcharged for these products, by being forced to pay for two slices of cheese, which they do not want, order or receive.” Also, Kissner and Werner “have suffered injury as a result of their purchases because they were overcharged” and “McDonald’s is being unjustly enriched by these practices.” While attorney Andrew Lavin admits the mobile app ordering option does offer a Quarter Pounder without cheese, he notes in-store customers have no such choice.

According to the Denver Post, the agent was dancing and did a backflip, which caused his firearm to come out of its holster and fall to the floor. When he bent to pick up the gun, it discharged. “I heard a loud bang,” Reddington said, “and I thought some idiot set off a firecracker. All of a sudden, from the knee down became completely red, and that’s when it clicked in my head, ‘Oh, I’ve been shot.’” A man at the bar applied a tourniquet to Reddington’s leg. The FBI agent was taken to Denver police headquarters and released to an FBI supervisor. Mile High Spirits has promised “complimentary drinks forever” to Reddington.

STEAMING RAGE In a gross twist on road rage, Henry George Weaver, 69, of New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, ended an argument with another man June 8 by defecating on him. According to Lehigh Valley Live, Pennsylvania state police reported that “the accused and the victim got into a road-rage argument, leading the accused to defecate on the victim,” but they did not disclose what started the argument. Weaver was charged with harassment.

SWEET REVENGE In a bid to unseat his boss, Bon Homme County, South Dakota, Deputy Sheriff Mark Maggs thrashed Sheriff Lenny Gramkow in the June 5 Republican primary by a vote of 878 to 331. So Sheriff Gramkow didn’t waste any time: Less than a minute after the polls closed, he fired Maggs, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. “As of this moment you are no longer an employee of Bon Homme County,” Maggs’ termination notice read. Maggs, a 31-year-old father of four, will not become sheriff until January, but he is confident the county commission “will stand with my family... and insure that my family will not be left hanging without an income or insurance,” Maggs said. “We’re going to be fine.”

Charlotte Fox, 61, an accomplished mountain climber who summited Mount Everest in 1996, met an unlikely death May 24 when she fell down the hardwood stairs at her home in Telluride, Colorado.

Fox was part of the infamous 1996 Mount Everest expedition chronicled in “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer, when eight climbers died. Friends called her fall “shocking,” according to The Aspen Times.

Climbing partner Andrea Cutter said of the news, “It made me think, ‘Jeez, it’s just so wrong.’” San Miguel County Coroner Emil Sante said officials “have no reason to believe that it was suspicious at all.”

On June 2, as two Jackson County, Oregon, sheriff’s deputies waited for a tow truck to remove a 2003 Toyota Camry from the side of a road, 23-year-old Anthony J. Clark, of Grants Pass, walked up to the car and told the deputies he was going to steal it. He then got into the car and drove off, leading officers on a 40-mile chase through Ashland, Talent and Phoenix Oregon, crashing into fences and driving the wrong way on several roads. When officers finally stopped the car, The Oregonian reported, Clark ran into a mobile home park, where he was arrested trying to steal another car. The deputies reported Clark admitted taking LSD and said he thought he was inside a real-life version of the “Grand Theft Auto” video game. Among other charges, Clark was accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants and second-degree criminal mischief. ■

aybe you’ve been in this position: You’re at work, and a co-worker gripes about a supervisor. Then the conversation takes an ugly turn: “I can’t believe they get paid $[fill in the blank] to boss us around...” It’s a risky bit of gossip, but it happens. Workplaces can be trying, and when it feels like stress isn’t distributed or rewarded equally, anxiety mutates into resentment.

But for most of Maui, it’s not the middle management supervisors who are robbing workers’ coffers – it’s the executives higher up the food chain.

CEO Pay Ratios On the Island To get a sense of what I mean, take a look around the neighborhood. At your nearest McDonalds, the median annual income of a worker is $7,017.Yet, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook was compensated $21,761,052 in 2017. If you divide CEO pay by the median worker income, you get a figure that’s referred to as the “CEO pay ratio.” At McDonald’s Corp., the CEO pay ratio is 3,101-to-one. That means CEO Steve Easterbrook makes 3,101 times what is paid to his median employee.

poration, which compensates its workers a median $137,849 per year. Uncle and Aunty behind the counter aren’t the ones making that much (if they are, teach me how to make teri beef). This number reflects the math involved.

Median income is the middle, not an average.

So, half the employees are making less than these six-figures (gas station attendants), while half are making more (oil rig technicians). This figure pales in comparison to the $24,781,568 made by the Chevron CEO in 2017, 180 times the salary of his median worker.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon raked in $22,791,276 compared to the median worker compensation of $19,177, for a ratio of 1,188:1. Target CEO Brian Cornell took a comparatively modest $8,399,210, 408 times his median worker’s income of $20,581. Amazon (Whole Foods) CEO Jeff Bezos was compensated $1,681,840 while employees got a median $28,446, a CEO pay ratio of 59:1. That almost sounds philanthropic in comparison to his fellow executives until you consider his 80 million shares of Amazon stock that net $275 million a day.

CVS Health Corp. (Longs and Walgreens) CEO Larry J. Merlo made $12,266,076 in

2017, 320 times his median workers.

Chances are, you’ve shopped at one of these chain stores in the last month, and your money has subsidized the bloated paycheck of a rich CEO (note: in Googling the above executives, all were white males) and their gluttonous extraction of labor from the cashier who actually helped you with what you needed. We can play this game, “Which CEO is the greediest?” because of a rule in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that mandates CEO pay ratio disclosure of all publicly traded companies. The act was signed into law by President Obama in 2010 as part of an extensive set of reforms following the Great Recession.

2017 was the first fiscal year that public companies were mandated to report CEO pay ratios to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which posts the documents online. Earlier this year, websites like Bloomberg started compiling the data into searchable, accessible databases. Earlier this month, Honolulu Civil Beat’s Anita Hofschneider put the magnifying glass on Hawai‘i-based public companies.

CEO Pay Ratios at Hawai‘i-Based Public Companies To tell if companies based in Hawai‘i show more aloha for their workers than multinational ones, look at the SEC data for Hawai‘i’s notable businesses: • Alexander and Baldwin, Inc., the largest private landowner on Maui had a CEO pay ratio of 43:1. CEO Christopher Benjamin was paid $2,926,176 while the median worker earned $67,369 in 2017.

• Matson, Inc. paid its CEO Matthew J. Cox $4,477,211 and its median worker $101,968 (including company contributions to health plans) for a CEO pay ratio of 44:1.

• Bank of Hawaii CEO Peter S. Ho made $4,686,501 compared to his median worker who made $57,060: a CEO pay ratio of 82:1.

• Hawaiian Electric Industries, which owns HECO, MECO and American Savings Bank paid CEO Constance Lau 47 times the median employee. She made $5,913,746; the median employee made $126,857.

• Hawaiian Holdings (the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines) CEO Mark Dunkerley made $3,848,649 before retiring in Nov. 2017, 54 times the median employee income of $71,298.

• Hawaiian Telcom paid its CEO Scott Barber $1,364,311 compared to its median employee, who got $78,423. Its CEO pay ratio was 17:1.

• First Hawaiian Bank reported CEO Robert S. Harrison received $5,759,774 in compensation in its 2018 SEC filings, an almost $3 million increase from 2015, but did not include median income of its employees nor a CEO pay ratio calculation.

• Maui Land & Pineapple similarly has not filed its median employee income, but reported paying $1,153,750 in 2017 to CEO Warren Haruki.

So Hofschneider’s right, except regarding Bank of Hawaii. The SEC doesn’t have information on First Hawaiian Bank yet, but even considering its minimum wage of $15 an hour, its pattern of executive raises makes it doubtful that FHB’s CEO pay ratio is any better than BOH’s.

CEO Pay Ratios at Maui’s Top Employers While the aforementioned companies have roots in Hawai‘i, they don’t necessarily employ the most people – our top employers are hotels and other accommodation-industry businesses. Here’s how a few of Maui’s top employers that are public companies compensate their CEOs in relation to their workers.

• Hilton Worldwide Holdings, which owns Waldorf Astoria and thus the Grand Wailea, paid its CEO Christopher J. Nassetta $18,790,698. The median employee received $33,168, for a CEO pay ratio of 567:1.

• The Marriott International (parent company of the Westin, Sheraton and RitzCarlton) paid its CEO Arne M. Sorenson $13,311,617 while the median worker got $33,697 – a CEO pay ratio of 395:1.

• Hyatt Hotels Corporation CEO Mark S. Hoplamazian received $9,872,656 last year to his median employee’s $33,121.

He made 298 times his median worker.

The Marriott currently operates eight Local 5 hotels in Hawai‘i. 20 hotels in Hawai‘i have union contracts that are set to expire this year.

In a UNITE HERE Local 5 statement, Laurie DeCoite, a 30-year employee at Sheraton Maui said, “I’m a single mom of 3 kids and I work two full-time jobs as a phone operator at two hotels. I am fighting for this contract to make these jobs good enough so that I can work one job and spend time with my kids. I also don’t want them to struggle with two jobs like me.”

Somewhere, Marriott CEO Arne M. Sorenson’s ears are burning. But at $13 million a year, approximately 400 times DeCoite’s pay at one of her jobs, he can afford to insulate himself from this reality.

Towards Equality It wasn’t always like this. The Economic Policy Institute notes that CEO pay ratios were about 20:1 in 1965. Over the last three decades, however, CEO compensation grew faster than wages for other workers. That’s where we are now: hurting for housing while the national average compensation for CEOs is at a record high, about 235 times the median wage of workers.

There have been a number of proposals towards income parity that address the riches that tend to be hoarded at the top. Examples include taxes on companies with high CEO pay ratios; progressive tax rates that make the wealthy shell out higher percentages on their wealth than working and middle class people; raising the minimum wage, and allocating funds for social and housing programs.

Engagement, advocacy and solidarity with activist-workers are other routes. Buying local is one way to keep money in our community.

Even without legislation, we can choose to defund McDonald’s CEO at every meal. The mandatory disclosure of CEO pay ratios means that we can choose to support companies that value fair wages. We can and should expect more from companies, especially ones that built their wealth stealing Native people’s land, polluting the Earth, exploiting third-world labor and peddling junk food to our keiki.

As for me, I’ll be doing my banking at the credit union and getting my summer mangoes at the farmers market.

Cost of Living in Hawai‘i This all goes to say that the amount of money made by ultra-wealthy CEOs is so monstrously excessive, it’s sociopathic. Hilton Worldwide Holding’s SEC report downplayed CEO Christopher Nassetta’s grossly unequal pay by reporting, “This ratio would have been 325:1 if not for the one-time grant made to the CEO in 2017. The one-time grant was awarded in recognition of successfully completing the spin-offs and transforming Hilton into a new fee-based, capital-efficient business model.” Giving an $8 million “grant” to an executive (who already makes $11 million a year) for simply doing his job is the kind of vampiric exploitation of labor that makes sense if you consider that this is the same cabal to unleash Paris Hilton on the world.

In a local context, the picture gets dimmer.

Earlier this month, Hawai‘i Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice claimed that “Hawai‘i has the highest ‘housing wage’ in the country,” referencing a report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition titled Out of Reach 2018. “Housing wage” is an estimate of the hourly wage a full-time worker must earn to pay fair market rent without spending more than 30 percent income on housing costs. The report documented the gap between wages and the cost of renting across the United States and found that it’s worst here in Hawai‘i. On Maui, the report calculated, the annual income needed for a studio apartment is $44,960. According to the Bureau of Labor, that’s over $4,000 more than the median individual income if you extrapolate from median hourly wage.

So, while wealthy CEOs endorse milliondollar executive raises and multimillion-dollar bonuses for themselves, the median employee of a hotel chain will not have the income needed to afford a zero-bedroom rental in Hawai‘i.

“This new national report confirms what we all know,” Gavin Thornton, co-director of the Hawai‘i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice, said: “Hawai‘i is facing the worst affordable housing crisis in the country.”

On Wednesday June 27, after MauiTime goes to press but before we’re on newsstands, hotel workers and their allies will unite in Lahaina for a call to action. UNITE HERE Local 5, a union representing approximately 11,000 workers throughout Hawai‘i in the hospitality, health care and food service industries, is organizing the rally, where workers will sign-wave and demand that “One Job Should Be Enough.”

Senate for comment. We asked what specific legislation they would support; whether they would vote to raise the minimum wage, if the state should tax companies with high CEO pay ratios, and if they would support raising taxes to redistribute wealth. It was super-crowded, and with seating for 20, we ended up sharing a table with a woman who was sitting alone. Like many people who are into local, sustainable food, she turned out to be great. We bonded over the healthy food and my friend asked for her card so we could keep in touch. I got the Super Salad; the roasted Brussel sprouts stole the show, and the sweet and savory paired with different textures made it a very non-boring salad. My friend got the Beet and Goat Cheese Salad in a wrap, and the fruity flavors paired with the earthy goat cheese really pulled the flavors together.

There are a lot of choices on the menu, depending on your inclinations. There are a range of signature salads with a diversity of flavors, like classic Caesar, Greek, Thai, Beet and Goat Cheese, and Cobb. Grain Bowls take the salads a step further by adding quinoa or papaya salad. For those looking for a hearty meal, there are the Chef Inspired salads, like the Buckwheat Noodle, the Super Salad with purple sweet potato and Brussel sprouts, and a Paniolo option with cheddar, bacon and mushroom flavors.You can also make any salad a wrap.

Sandwich options also range a variety of flavors, from falafel, to shrimp and avocado, to ahi, to lemon and thyme, and eggplant and goat cheese.

When I went to meet a friend for lunch and to check it out, the place was busy.

“We’ve been pretty steady,” the girl at the front told me. The interior is cute, vibrant and hip. The waiting line curves around the side of the store and instructions for ordering are built into a wall collage. Fresh, colorful ingredients are displayed under the counter. Water is displayed in glass dispensers with lemons sliced into it. The bright green interior is offset by farm-style wood accents.

Never mind that the creatures within are deadly, powerful and awfully hungry – the audience was given a firstperson view of a most awesome sci-fi destination (outside of Westworld). We were drawn in by how enticing the set-up was and on the edge of our seats when things inevitably went south.

In the latest installment, “The Park Is Gone” (as stated in the movie poster tagline), the dinosaurs risk extinction from an erupting volcano and the survivors of the previous film improbably put themselves in incredible danger once again. It’s all so by-the-book, only the ferocious dinosaurs seem to be enjoying themselves.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom feels implausible and forced every step of the way, with star Chris Pratt’s here-we-goagain attitude extremely on-the-nose.

Despite being directed by J.A. Bayona, whose 2012 The Impossible perfectly mixed searing emotions and state-of-theart special effects, the pacing is initially sluggish, then switches to frantic once the action kicks into high gear. Bayona sets up moments and frames scenes in ways that suggest he’s studied the works

of Steven Spielberg (who returns here as an executive producer).

Yet, Spielberg’s touch is sorely missed.

Note the justifiably famous scene from the first film: the agonizing slow build of two children, trapped inside a stranded vehicle, while a curious T-Rex terrorizes them from outside. In comparison, Bayona leaps from one set pierce to the next (Volcano erupts! Humans run! Dinos pursue! Repeat!) and we barely register anything as scenes fly by.

Dwelling on John Hammond story leftovers is the wrong way to go. If Jurassic Park is now a thing of the past and the future of the dinosaurs is the current, most pressing issue brought up, then looking back only keeps the film from embracing anything new, plot-wise.

ponderously at a table. As hard as it is to believe, Independence Day: Resurgence wound up using Goldblum far better and gave him far more to do.

Much of this is surprisingly depressing, as the plight of the doomed dinos is used to make references to human trafficking, unlawful confinement and the inevitability of death. There’s no sense of wonder to any of this, as the towering creatures are either chasing, chomping or being abused by humans. The volcano ambush is the film’s best sequence, though bad timing hurts it. To state the obvious, recent events on the Big Island make it hard to enjoy lava-based destruction at this point in time.

Pratt gamely spends the running time auditioning for the next Indiana Jones installment and still seems detached.

Bryce Dallas Howard works hard to muster tears during key moments, but her

performance is better than the role. The supporting characters (particularly those played by Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda) are so obnoxious and poorly acted, I was rooting for the dinos to devour them.

Even the acting veterans, like Ted Levine and Toby Jones, are really bad here.

Also subpar is the screenplay, which doesn’t get truly interesting until literally the last few minutes. While this ends on a cliffhanger and sets up world-building along the lines of the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, it fails to create something similarly complex and fresh. This is easily the weakest of the sequels: while it’s livelier than the big-nothing of Jurassic Park III and has a larger scale than the mostly awful The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Bayona’s film leaves an unsatisfying aftertaste.

There are exciting moments and excellent CGI effects to carry it, but this is all very been-there, stomped-that. ■

While ditching that extra weight might be more amazing if you had a baby to show for it, I’m not sure. You’re suddenly free of an incredible burden that was really beginning to take its toll. A baby, precious though it might be, would be a whole different kind of burden. Before you mourn its absence, consider: might you not be better off as you are, at least for the moment?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Some woman is suing a lingerie company because of a thong accident. She claims a metal clip flew off her underwear and hit her in the eye. While this might be legit, my Spidey Sense says she’s just fishing for a big payout from a rich corporation. Who knows?

She might even get it. But she’ll have to live with being known as the chick who can’t put on her undies without getting hurt, and who’s petty enough to make a lawsuit out of it. Your own door to Easy Street might open a crack this week. Consider the price(s) you might have to pay to take a stroll down that road, and make sure they’re worth it to you, before you do.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

No one quite understands responsibility like you do.

Because you’ve always taken yours seriously, you can easily assess what a new duty will cost you, in terms of time and energy. Thus you should already know that you just can’t take on this new burden without ditching a host of others. You simply don’t have enough room and time in your life. This isn’t a tank of low-maintenance sea monkeys; it might as well be a brand-new baby. In order to give it the care it deserves, you’ll have to completely upend your routine.

Are you prepared to do that? If not, make sure you’re crystal clear with those who’d unload this responsibility upon you, and tell them, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Imagine you’re a clam, using your entire being to keep the two halves of your shell sealed tight, making you more or less impervious to the world. But what’s happening? Against your will, your muscles begin to relax. The shell opens. You’re being steamed, my dear, and it’s no bad thing. This is what you’ve needed for a long time – someone who has the tools to gently force you to open up and make yourself vulnerable. Let them, even though it’s probably frightening. You’ve done as much as you can cooped up in your safe little world. It’s time to see and do more.

Inevitably, human life in the modern world generally has a negative impact on the planet. There are ways to offset this, of course. Let this be your focus this week.

There are also other, less concrete (but no less effective) ways to subtly counterbalance your impact on the planet. You’ve already put off this kind of thing for too long. Since this is a great week to stop thinking about it and just start doing it, I can’t see why you’d wait.

Don’t let scare tactics get to you. These dogs are all bark. They could bite you, and hard – which is why the scare tactics might work. Recognize that it’s probably not worth their while, though. You needn’t be foolishly brave; I suppose if you give them reason enough they might make an example of you. However, there’s no real reason to let them totally derail you. Slow down and keep an eye on their sharp, sharp teeth. But continue on your way. They’ll do their best to terrify you, but once you’ve moved on anyway, they’ll find other things to do, and almost certainly forget all about you.

You know those friends, the good ones? If you showed up on their doorstep and needed a place to crash, there’d be no question whether or not they’d let you, and you wouldn’t be embarrassed to ask, either. Count yourself lucky if you have more than one or two of these gems.

Honor them this week. The thing with friends like these is so much can go unspoken that you can end up taking each other for granted without meaning to. Let them know how much they mean to you. It goes without saying, and they know. But it’s still nice to hear.

Some people navigate the world wearing blinders.

Since they only see a narrow sliver of reality, they make terrible decisions. While I hope you’re not one of these poor fools, you surely wear a few filters – some of which may compromise your ability to make wise choices.

Some of these filters are likely to be forcibly stripped away this week. That might be a bit shocking (how shocking depends on how many you were wearing in the first place), but it’s the only way you’ll be able to arrive at the “right” decision. Cope as best you can with this new, less-censored version of reality on your own – but don’t be afraid to ask for help. You may need it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

In India and elsewhere, you use your left hand to wipe your ass, and nothing else. In fact, it’s considered insulting (and, presumably, disgusting) if you employ it to eat or interact with other people. There are certain tools for certain jobs that you really can’t use elsewhere, at least not without offending people’s sensibilities. Language can work that way, too.

Certain words and ways of interacting are only appropriate in certain contexts. Since you’re likely to get those mixed up, make sure you have someone on hand who’ll give you a warning sign when you venture into dangerous territory. Keep your left hand and your more colorful vocabulary to yourself this week; you don’t need them for the task(s) in front of you.

Imagine if making love to someone tapped you directly into their nervous system, so you’d literally feel what they felt. Rape would certainly become a thing of the past. We’d also have trouble lying to our partners or hiding infidelity. Would it be the end of intimacy altogether?

Or would we explore a new kind of intimacy, where we acknowledged all of our own desires, instead of hiding, denying or lying about them? I personally think it’s better to love the whole, imperfect person, rather than only cherishing some edited version of them. This week you have a chance to move to a new level of trust with someone. It’s not likely to all be good, but I think it’s worth going there, anyway. The question is, do you?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

I’ve seen some Geminis undergo dramatic transformations in the space of moments. Some might find it alarming that one minute you might be mildmannered Bruce Banner and the next you’re something akin to the Incredible Hulk; others will think it exciting. Whatever other people’s reactions, your goal should remain consistent: learning to keep your metamorphoses under control. They are potentially a tremendous source of power, if you figure out how to properly harness them. Until then they will always be a great weakness. Since this week’s a great time to transform your Achilles’ Heel to a secret font of strength, please focus on making that happen.
