Hawai‘i passed the first chlorpyrifos ban in the nation.

HAWAI‘I PASSES HISTORIC CHLORPYRIFOS BAN Once again, Hawai‘i has reaffirmed its status as a bastion of sanity in a country turned upside down absent a moral compass. On June 13, Governor David Ige signed SB 3095 into law, making the Aloha State the first in the nation to ban pesticides containing chlorpyrifos.

Chlorpyrifos should have been banned from food crops years ago. In 2015, back when the Environmental Protection Agency valued science, the EPA proposed a rule to eliminate the tolerance of any amount of the pesticide on produce. It stated, “At this time, the agency is unable to conclude that the risk from aggregate exposure from the use of chlorpyrifos meets the safety standard.”

This would have been the latest in a string of increasing regulations against the pesticide to emerge after more was known about its effects. In 2000, it was phased out of residential use. In 2012, no-spray buffer zones ranging from 25150 feet were established, depending on whether the application was via ground or aerial spraying.

But then, in 2016, Donald Trump was elected president and Scott Pruitt was appointed to head the EPA. In a fetid corner of the White House swamp, Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris took root. After he provided “advising” and a $1 million donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, Pruitt was persuaded to reject the proposed restrictions on chlorpyrifos. In doing so, Pruitt rejected the scientific conclusion of the EPA’s own chemical safety experts, who stated that the insecticide could harm children and farm workers.

When it comes to questionable chemicals, the stakes are high in Hawai‘i. Our ecosystem is fragile, unique and close-knit.

Chlorpyrifos can take weeks or years to

break down when it gets into the soil, where it sticks strongly to dirt particles.

When it rains, runoff hits the reef and is toxic to many bird, fish and marine species.

The pesticide may build up in the tissue of these animals, some of which we eat.

This impacts the most vulnerable among us: children. “Researchers studied the blood of women who were exposed to chlorpyrifos and the blood of their children from birth for three years. Children who had chlorpyrifos in their blood had more developmental delays and disorders than children who did not have chlorpyrifos in their blood. Exposed children also had more attention deficit disorders and hyperactivity disorders,” the National Pesticide Information Center states.

“Protecting the health and safety of our keiki and residents is one of my top priorities.”

Governor Ige said at the bill signing ceremony.

“We must protect our communities from potentially harmful chemicals. At the same time, Hawai‘i’s agriculture industry is extremely important to our state and economy. We will work with the Department of Agriculture, local farmers and the University of Hawai‘i as we seek safe, alternative pest management tools that will support and sustain our agriculture industry for generations to come.”

To be clear, the new law doesn’t just ban chlorpyrifos, and it isn’t immediate. Start-

ing next year, users of restricted pesticides will be required to report the total quantities of the chemicals used, along with the area that was sprayed. There will be nospray buffer zones 100 feet around schools from 7am-4pm. Users of chlorpyrifos will have a grace period through the year 2022, during which they can receive temporary permits to continue its use.

This is progress on multiple fronts: toxic chlorpyrifos will be banned, restricted use pesticide disclosure will be mandatory (currently it’s voluntary) and there is an establishment of buffer zones to protect schools. To some, however, this is just one battle in a longer war against industrial agriculture in the islands.

After all, it’s the industrial seed-agrochemical giants Monsanto, Dow, DuPont and Syngenta that most report using restricted use pesticides like chlorpyrifos. Of these companies, Monsanto has locations on Maui that are known restricted pesticide users – one of which is a mile uphill from the shore, less than a mile upwind of Kamali‘i Elementary and a mile from Lokelani Intermediate School. The other Monsanto location is less than a half mile away from the beach and adjacent to Kealia Pond. Both Monsanto sites are near residential areas. This highlights the shortcomings of the buffer zones created by the bill.

Further, “SB 3095’s 100 foot no-spray zones are 13 times smaller than the 1/4 mile standard set by a similar law in California.” Ashley Lukens, program director of the Hawai‘i Center for Food Safety said. “Although this is a huge win, it is just the beginning. We need continued community and lawmaker education to make this work possible. We need to continue organizing to ensure we have the strongest and most effective advocacy base possible.”

The grace period allowing the continued use of the banned chemical has been another subject of debate. Essentially, the law acknowledges the danger that chlorpyrifos pose to vulnerable populations and the environment… yet gives companies license to use the pesticide another four-and-a-half years.

The arc of the moral universe is long indeed.

which targeted GMOs and the pesticides sprayed by seed-agrochemical companies in unknown combinations and volumes.

Even after Monsanto and Dow spent $8 million to oppose the GMO moratorium with misleading advertisements and glossy mail-outs, Maui voted to do away with the GM seed companies and their chemicals.

Then Monsanto and Dow dragged Maui County to federal court and won, invalidating the moratorium. That said, the initiative made it clear where the people of Maui stand on the issues of environmental protection, health, and sustainable, local food production. Lukens is right when she says we need continued organizing and education.

It’s an election year, and an populace empowered by knowledge and communication is the best way to encourage progress.

Despite any shortcomings in SB 3095, it is signed into law and is a step forward, leading the nation in the right direction. It is the result of years of attempts, tireless organizers, concerned citizens and countless hours. The bill shows that the will of the people can overcome federal corruption and ineptitude, and that after a certain point, legislators will be forced to listen or risk losing their jobs.

Remember that this election season.

“When people talk about the term ‘Hawaiian,’ usually it’s used in the sense of race or ethnicity” Kauai told me. “In the 19th century [before the overthrow], however, in the Hawaiian Kingdom where the term originated, it didn’t denote race and ethnicity, it denoted membership to the Hawaiian Kingdom… It was an inclusive marker. The Hawaiian Kingdom is one of the first countries in the world to embrace universal racial suffrage. Regardless of the color of your skin, your race or ethnicity, in the 19th century you could acquire citizenship under the Hawaiian Kingdom. That history is one that is important for us to come to better know because it informs our optics of today, to show how far off track we might have gotten.”

Let me emphasize: decades before the Civil War and the U.S.-backed overthrow of the sovereign Hawaiian Kingdom, there was universal racial suffrage in Hawai‘i. Further, there were no laws prohibiting women from voting, and wahine commonly held positions of power and influence. “Because of the generosity of the people of Maui and with support from Young Brothers Ltd., Quick Tow, A&B, Na‘auao Traffic Control, Maui Gold-Hali‘imaile Distilling Company and Alpha Hawai‘i we are able to send another gift box of aloha to Puna – a very large gift box,” said drive coordinator Mahina Martin.

In Hilo, non-profit Food Basket Hawai‘i will coordinate distribution of donated items to evacuees and front-line community groups that are providing services and support to impacted areas in Puna. “Our partnership with Hilo-based nonprofit Food Basket Hawai‘i is critical,” said Martin. “They have the warehousing, staff and volunteer structure and ability to distribute directly to evacuees and to different support groups on the front-lines of the disaster.”

One of those groups, Hawai‘i Lava Flow Animal Rescue Network told Martin that they were in great need for pet food and supplies. In response, more than 200 cases and large bags of pet food were included in the container along with a large amount of pet supplies.

World Oceans Day was celebrated on Maui on June 8 with events presented by Pacific Whale Foundation, Maui Ocean Center, Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge and Seascape Restaurant.

The purpose of World Oceans Day is to inform the public of human impact on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens and mobilize the world’s population for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

Events included Marine Debris Monitoring Program activities at Kealia Pond and Kahului Harbor (with free beach cleanup kits distributed by Pacific Whale Foundation marine naturalists), a free PacWhale Eco-Adventure between Ma‘alaea and Olowalu, snorkel reef cleanup, microplastic sampling, a screening of the documentary STRAWS at Seascape Restaurant and a “Pollution Solutions” keiki art contest.

“This event has been months in the making, and really helps us to not only spread the message of what our nonprofit programs are all about but to teach others how small steps can make a huge impact, when practiced as a community,” said PWF acting executive director Kristie Wrigglesworth.

13,632 pieces of debris were collected throughout the day by 233 participating volunteers, with cigarettes continuing to be the item most recorded during beach clean-ups, amounting to 56 percent of the total trash. The average microplastics count was 4.9 items per liter of water, lower than the global average of 11.8. According to Pacific Whale Foundation Senior Research Analyst Jens Currie, the microplastic counts are baseline data, and the team will be looking to see how these trends change over time as the annual event continues.

“Everyone needs to play a part,” said Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. “You can make a difference today – and every day – by doing simple things like carrying your own water bottle, coffee cup and shopping bags; recycling the plastic you buy; avoiding products that contain microplastics; and volunteering for a local clean-up.”

During a public proclamation ceremony on Jun. 5 at Kamaole II Beach Park, Mayor Alan Arakawa asked all residents and visitors to do their part in protecting the ocean from marine debris and to steward our global and local natural resources well.

“Here in Hawai‘i, the Pacific Ocean is part of who we are,” said Arakawa. “In the sea, we find food, play, travel, exercise, education and more. So World Oceans Day provides us with a positive reminder to redouble our efforts to protect the ocean and reverse negative trends brought about by humans who have taken this vast, bountiful resource for granted.”

News Of The Weird THE PASSING PARADE Ninety-six-year-old Barney Smith of Alamo Heights, Texas, is known around those parts as the King of the Commode for his life’s work: more than 1,300 decorated toilet seats, all displayed in the retired master plumber’s Toilet Seat Art Museum. But now, he concedes, it’s time to put a lid on it: “I’m beginning to feel like I’d rather be in an air-conditioned home in a chair, looking at a good program,” Smith, who is bent with arthritis and uses a cane, told the Associated Press on May 22. Inside the metal-garage museum the collection includes toilet lids decorated with a chunk of the Berlin Wall, a piece of insulation from the Space Shuttle Challenger, Pez dispensers and flint arrowheads, along with the toilet lid from the airplane that carried Aristotle Onassis’ body back to Greece after his death. Smith told his wife, Louise, that he would stop at 500 pieces, but that was 850 lids ago. “If I would have just read my Bible as many hours as I spent on my toilet seats, I’d be a better man,” Smith said. Louise died in 2014, and Smith took a fall recently and broke some ribs. Now he’s looking for someone who will keep the museum intact: “This is my life’s history here.”

On May 20, as a handful of adults enjoyed the swings at Angel Park in southwest Atlanta, two children walked up and asked to use the swing set.

The adults agreed and started to walk away, reported The (Macon, Georgia) Telegraph, when the boys, about 6 and 12-years-old, pulled out rocks the size of baseballs and what appeared to be a black handgun. They threw the rocks, hitting one man on the calf and causing an abrasion, according to Atlanta police.

The older boy held the gun and pointed it at the adults, who ran away as the boys ran in the opposite direction. Earlier in May, two children were reported for an alleged armed carjacking in the same neighborhood.

COMPELLING EXPLANATION Claiming the shooting was an accident, Angelo Russo, 55, told police in Tatura, Victoria, Australia, he tripped over an eggplant during a dispute with a man who had run over his dog, which caused the gun Russo was carrying to go off, striking David Calandro in the head and killing him. Calandro and a friend had gone to Russo’s farm on Feb. 18, 2017, to buy some chilies, 9News reported, but as he drove away, Russo’s dog, Harry, began barking and chasing the vehicle. Calandro swerved toward the dog to “spook him,” the friend told a Victorian Supreme Court jury on May

23, but swerved too far, running over the dog instead. Russo pleaded guilty to manslaughter on May 25.

OOPS! Pesky weeds around his garage caused a Springfield Township, Ohio, resident to resort to extreme measures: The unnamed homeowner tried to eliminate them with a torch, and instead set the garage on fire. Firefighters were called to the scene at 4 a.m. on May 24, where they found the detached garage “fully involved,” according to the Springfield News-Sun. The structure was a total loss, including tools and appliances inside, valued at $10,000 to $15,000.

STILL CREEPY Before Chuck E. Cheese was a thing, it was ShowBiz Pizza, complete with the Rock-afire Explosion Band, an animatronic combo that is still the stuff of nightmares. On May 24, the Rockafire Explosion Band was reunited at a new arcade bar in Kansas City, Missouri, also called Rock-afire. The band’s inventor, Aaron Fechter of Creative Engineering in Orlando, Florida, refurbished the band members with new masks, skin and costumes, and the playlist is set to include old standards as well as more contemporary hits. Bar owner James Bond was a huge fan of the band as a child: “You didn’t know whether they were fake or real,” he told The Kansas City Star .

BRIGHT IDEA Toronto police constables Vittorio Dominelli, 36, and Jamie Young, 35, had to call for backup in January during a raid on a marijuana dispensary after allegedly sampling some of the evidence. CTV News reported the officers called for help after they began hallucinating, one eventually climbing a tree. In a May 23 press release, Toronto police announced the two officers had been suspended and now face criminal charges in the incident.

CRIME REPORT Three men were arrested on May 20 after stealing a 25-foot-long shed from a foreclosed property in Lebanon, Maine, and dragging it down the street behind their pickup truck, according to the Portland Press Herald . Matthew Thompson of Lebanon, Timothy James of Pembroke, New Hampshire, and Robert Breton of Milton, New Hampshire, were spotted in the act by a concerned citizen, who alerted Maine State Police. In addition, Thompson was found to have crystal meth and prescription pills that were not prescribed to him. All three were taken to the York County Jail and held on $5,000 bail. ■

huge mahalo to the lady whose face I never saw and who never saw mine. It was the most humiliating crisis of my life. There I sat in a locked stall in the ladies room of Walmart praying to GOD to give me direction as to how I was going to get back out there. I heard a voice like an angel say, “Ma’am, is there something I can do to help you?” She went way beyond the call of duty as she went shopping for multiple items to help me out. She came back with everything fitting perfectly and would not take money. I wandered around the store thinking maybe I would know her. I want her to know that she restored my faith in humanity that day and never could I have needed it more. ■

Talking story with Maui business owner, bodybuilder, actor and director Jim Oxborrow

t Ox Pro-Fitness, the sleek and enticing new supplements store in Kihei, you’ll find a telling comic book ad, framed and sitting by itself on a shelf. It’s the Charles Atlas classic, in which a cheerful muscleman asks a bullied wimp, “Hey kid, are you tired of getting sand kicked in your face?” The genie-like strong man assures the young

teen that a better life awaits with some exercise, workout routines and by ordering his workout manual. It’s a classic piece of Americana, but its presence in Jim Oxborrow’s new shop isn’t kitschy or ironic. In fact, the friendly but earnest, not-kidding-around manner of the one-page commercial reflects not only the store, but the man running it.

When I met him in his store, Oxbor-

row wore his glasses, flashed a winning smile and was an ingratiating host. It reminded me of that SNL skit where Dwayne Johnson plays Clark Kent, with his reporter attire just barely concealing his enormous musculature and superhero cape. Oxborrow is an imposing presence but a warm, honest-to-goodness nice guy with a mission to see his clients (and everyone else) get fit. When

I addressed his framed Charles Atlas ad, Oxborrow responded, “I had the skinny kid complex. I had sand kicked in my face. You have to put the time in. I can get you big or small.”

Jim Oxborrow was born in Coalinga, population 7,000, in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Or, as Oxborrow puts it, “I was born and raised four miles from where Joaquin Murrietta was killed.”

His shop is packed with different brands but Oxborrow, who was wearing a form fitting tank top and jeans when I first interviewed him, acts more like a friendly drug store clerk than a fitness coach.

“I’m a bit of a bartender and a pharmacist,” he said. “I do a lot of studying on my down time. I’m my own lab rat.

I know what works as a small business owner on Maui. I’m not gonna sell garbage that doesn’t work. I want results.

I ask my customers, ‘What are your goals?’ I want no product lines that are already on Maui – I keep prices as low as possible. In a lot of cases, I’m cheaper than Amazon. I’m always looking for the next big thing.” Among his repeat customers are police officers, firefighters and active military. They all get a 10 percent discount. “I rely on word of mouth,” said Oxborrow.

Ox Pro-Fitness carries 13 product lines, many of which have names that either evoke intimidation or sound like Dwayne Johnson biography titles: Havoc Hardcore, The Pitbull Labs line (“10 percent of the profits goes to animal rescue,” Oxborrow assured me), the bestselling Blackstone Lab product line, the Outbreak line (with a post-apocalyptic theme) and the Red Con line (with individual packages labeled “Total War,” “Cluster Bomb Double Tap” and, my favorite, “Boom Stick,” which boasts the flavors “sour gummy bear and mint chocolate ice cream”).

Ox Pro Fitness is not only inviting and immaculately clean in its layout but also has a few of Oxborrow’s trophies and medals on display. And there’s a massive photograph of him stretched out on the beach, wearing a tiny orange bikini. Truly, the store is an extension of the man.

Whether asking Oxborrow a complex or embarrassingly simple question about health and fitness, his reply is direct, good-humored and extremely motivating. For example, here’s his take on “cheat days” during an exercise routine: “I don’t believe in ‘cheat days,’” he said. “I believe in a ‘cheat meal.’ You can ruin a diet by eating bad for a whole day. Eating one donut is 255 calories; you burn approximately 300 running for 30 minutes. It’s like a high interest loan. You’re spending half an hour burning off that one donut, paying interest, before you begin working on the principal. If you cheat a whole day, it will take you a whole week to pay off the interest. Your body will never change.”

Before I left Ox Pro-Fitness, Jim gave me a last minute tip that has stayed with me. Apparently, I shouldn’t be looking at the weight on the bathroom scale as an indication of where I’m at healthwise. “It’s a misconception if you use the scale,” he said. “Your fat weighs more than your muscle! Stay off the scale. It’s not your friend. Use the mirror instead.”

Along with his two sisters, Oxborrow was raised in a household with a unique religious affiliation.

“I was raised Seventh Day Adventist by my mom and Mormon by my dad,” he said. “But now I lead a spiritual path.

Patience, tolerance and love are my daily goals.” Oxborrow always wanted to be a business owner of some kind and credits Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bob Paris, Sandra Bernhard and Bette Midler as his role models.

While Oxborrow was an accomplished – and very lean – tennis player in 2011, everything changed a year later. “In 2012, I told my trainer that I wanted to go on stage and do a bodybuilding show,” he said. “He looked at me and said, ‘Okay, it’s going to be a minimum of two years. So, I packed on muscle and trained for two years.

I did my first show in 2014, winning Mr. Maui. I can no longer play tennis...

I’m too big and slow. You have to pick your sport.”

In his first show, Oxborrow didn’t just win Mr. Maui – he also took the Mr. Bodybuilder Physique and Mr. Central Maui titles.

Oxborrow owned the Orchid Salon at the Four Seasons for 10 years, which gave him his first taste of being a business owner. “I’ve lived on Maui for 25 years,” he said. “It’s nice to give back to the community.”

My first question was an obvious one: Since he’s a known fitness expert, why did he open a supplement store and not a gym?

“The gyms have overhead and need more space,” said Oxborrow. “I think they’re more of a hassle. I’ve seen friends with gyms struggle and shut down. The rent is so expensive. Here, I’m the landlord.”

In addition to being a friendly, highly recognizable and approachable local celebrity (casual comparisons to The Rock aren’t out of the question), Oxborrow is also an actor. In fact, that’s him playing a cop in Kuleana and he performs frequently in local productions.

While the roles have become better and more complex (like his recent turns in Of Mice and Men and My Three Angels), he was at first cast often in roles that showcased his considerable physique.

“My first stage role was playing Sabu in The Producers ,” he said. “I played a lot of roles where I’m shirtless, holding a spear next to Cleopatra. I get it, I’m the bodybuilder. In L.A., I’m a dime a dozen. On Maui, I’m unique. It’s all about painting a picture: If you need a guy with abs, there’s me. But I like to dig into characters with depth.”

His recent directorial debut, a production of The House of Yes at the ProArts Theater, was a surprise. Any preconceived notions of Oxborrow being simply a macho he-man went out the window after the first five minutes. The show was bold, daringly dark, sexually charged and well-received.

Oxborrow is currently training for the Shawn Ray Classic tournament in November, and his workout and eating regimen has become far more strict and focused. “I just hired a trainer, posing coach and dietician for the event,” he said. Off to the Hang Loose Lounge where the Salty Dog’s are cold, calm and collected. This casual, classic Kahului spot is all about comfort, so settle in and grab some Mexican food from Amigo’s next door. -Sean Hower We grab an Uber to the West Side en route to Spanky’s Riptide. Spanky’s is a warm blanket for the liver. My health tonic here is a shot of tequila and a Miller High Life bottle (Sometimes a PBR pint). After all I only fly business class. Then it’s off to The Dirty Monkey where we have a similar routine but a bougie, highfalutin variation of the one at Spanky’s. Since Matt (Robb, the owner) is constantly juggling the tap selection, I can’t really tell you what the fuck beer we are having, just know it’s damn good. If the planets align, Firestone Walker 805 is there.

Then it's a neat pour of Elmer T. Lee Bourbon or something from the Buffalo Trace family.

Here’s where we get fancy: Sip the whiskey and use the beer as a palette cleanser. Finish that up already – now it’s time for some gin, and Sean at Lahaina Coolers crushes the martini game. Dude knows the perfect ratio of olive juice to gin. -Aydin Say Guess what? Sometimes going to the bar isn’t about getting a hip $20 drink.

Sometimes it’s about putting the world on hold and disappearing for a bit to watch the game, chill with friendly faces, or sing some ‘90s jams along a properly stocked bar. L’AVA’s is that place. Tucked away on Lower Main Street (but not a hostess bar!), with cheap happy hour drafts, TVs for sports or karaoke, and people having a good time – it’s a good place for a relaxing drink. Bottoms up! -Axel Beers Well, since we were underage and not drinking for the past 21 years, it only makes sense that we like kombucha. Every Tuesday, Alex Mitchell comes skipping into MauiTime Headquarters with her halfdrank booch. I heard the Wai Bar, which is just down the street from the office, serves ginger beer and kombucha on tap for those who choose to stand up for their health or lay off the booze. Sweet, right?

Or maybe it’s our hangover helper. Try the Palo Santo, which is a wild wood native to Mexico. One of the most relevant for turning 21 is this: Time and Place. There’s a time to have a blended kumquat-infused, coconut-washed rum and pineapple cocktail with POG foam, and that place is not the Sly Mongoose. The Goose reminds you that there’s beauty in simplicity. Sanctity in communing with your fellow bar comrades. Magic in the moment.

Ordering a shot and a beer (aka a Boilermaker) is not only an economical way to consume two drinks at the same time (NOTE: this is a sipping shot, not a ‘shooting’ shot) but it’s also a means to keep it simple, to not have you or your barkeep have to work too hard on what you’re drinking so that you can focus on being present, on releasing the toils of the day and getting back to what keeps you grounded. My preference at the Goose is for Jameson Irish Whiskey and a

First stop is the South Shore Tiki Lounge for the holy trifecta of live music, cold booze and scooby snacks. Soak it up – we have a lot of imbibing to do! We traipse around the Barmuda Triangle for a while, taking in the lively sights and sounds, and savoring the fact that we have just hit up Kahale’s, Dog and Duck, What Ales You, VIBE, Three’s and L.A.B. from one parking spot. Plus the Love Shack! We have to dance to at least one song at each spot, have a drink at each and, of course, hydrate, because at 21 we are pros at this. Extra points for popping across the street, singing karaoke and grinding a half price late night roll at Sansei in between shots. -Jen Russo Next up we head to the Fairmont Kea Lani. We are having the Logsdon cocktail at the Luana Lounge: Woodford Reserve bourbon, Benedictine liqueur, cardamaro, Angostura and creole bitters, and Kiawevanilla smoke. First the bartender stirs bourbon, butters and liqueurs, then he lights the wood and vanilla on fire and traps the smoke in a snifter. When the smoke fills the snifter, the bartender adds the liquor. It’s served up. It’s different, has whiskey and is smoky special. Sip it slowly, and relax. -Anthony Pignataro and Angie Thompson We are going to get loose with an epic Maui sunset view – a dirty martini and a hottie is always a good choice. Then welcome to my wino: we are going to a couple of my favorite spots for a glass of grape. First a crisp and always acid-free glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc at Ferraro’s. Then the lip-smackingly delicious 2015 Roth Cabernet Sauvignon at Mama’s Fish House. Last we take a trip to Tamura’s to stock up for our wineinfused, celebratory, turning-21 dinner party. -Alex Mitchell

We might do a tequila shot from their fantastic selection since we are celebrating, and we’ll probably wash that down with a Tecate or two. It pours a jet black color with a tan or off-white head. But something about the warmth and earthy spice of the whiskey complements the crisp neutrality (some would say “blandness”) of this domestic beer, which the Goose always keeps icy cold. Poetry is the Cure NAOMI SHIHAB NYE AND CATHY SONG WILL PROVE IT TO YOU IN THE GREEN ROOM Maui resident and past U.S. Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin by supporting innovation in the arts and sciences. Tekula calls the event series “Food for the soul,” noting that they have been said to “rouse appetites for literature, poetry and the arts.”

“These events expose the Maui community to writers, poets, and other types of visionaries that we wouldn’t normally have access to, and the setting is quite intimate,” Tekula added. “Participants are able to talk directly with these inspiring presenters before, during and after their event, and are also surrounded by kindred spirits in the audience. I really see it as a community building opportunity, as well as a place to come and be inspired to write, create and to cultivate a reverence for language, nature and the imagination.”

York Times reported that “Nye displays a palpable, unwavering empathy and hope for a better world.” She’s drawn on her experiences traveling around the world to create that empathetic, humanist view through her writing.

Of Hawai‘i native Cathy Song, renowned poet Richard Hugo wrote, “Song’s poems often remind a loud, indifferent, hard world of what truly matters to the human spirit.” Song is a noted teacher and leader of creative writing workshops through Hawai‘i’s “Poets in the Schools” program. “I’m not there to give [the students] false praise. It’s not going to do them any good,” Song has said of her work with the program. “Sometimes I tell them to rewrite something over and over, and

The reading will follow a unique format, which Tekula was excited to share with me.

“While their overall theme is to explore poetry as an ‘antidote’ for our chaotic times (a nod to current events and political atmosphere), I just learned that they are going to segment the presentation by topic area and share poetry that is relevant to that topic, have a brief discussion about it together, and then share poetry relevant to another topic, etc. I haven’t seen a poetry reading done this way and I think it will help the audience understand poetry in a way they maybe haven’t before. I’m really excited to witness the magic that is bound to happen with these two amazing forces for good in the world.”

Reading poetry is not easy for everyone, but listening to poetry, especially spoken by the artist who created it, is a connected and beautiful experience that transcends the page.

When listening to poetry, the lyricism and rhythm and intention of the words comes alive – much like listening to music.

After the reading and an intimate Q&A with the audience, there will be a book signing, a reception with refreshments, a book fair and live music.

Naomi Nye, who is visiting from Texas State University where she is a Professor of Creative Writing in Poetry, is a diverse and prolific writer with a list of accolades that are literally too long to list here. The New

hen I was a literature student, a classmate lamented that poetry was a dying art form. Our teacher was much smarter than we were, and disagreed completely. She schooled us with the idea that there is better poetry happening now (gasp) than ever before. From Tumblr, to rap songs, to fellows at famous universities and beyond – our world bursts with poetry. It’s still a force because it speaks to us, though sometimes we don’t know why. Amongst the deluge is genuine talent.

This Friday, June 22, two renowned poets will gather on stage for an evening of poetry at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. They will take the stage together, presenting an evening immersed in the power of poetry and exploring its role as an “antidote” to the chaos in the world around us – an antidote we are all looking for. For those unsure of the role and meaning of poetry, this reading will include a discussion and an audience Q&A woven into it, so that participants can dig a little deeper.

“We are honored to have two incredible voices joining us, weaving together a meaningful conversation for this special edition of The Green Room,” said Sara Tekula, interim Executive Director at The Merwin Conservancy. “Both Naomi and Cathy are truly gifted writers and compassionate women who care deeply about our world.”

'Superfly' This remake of the 1970s blaxploitation classic is neither super nor fly ★★★★★ Rated R / 116 Min.

revor Jackson takes on the role of Priest, a slick drug dealer in Atlanta, Georgia with plans to step away after “one last, big score.” His best friend Eddie, played by Jason Mitchell, doesn’t believe Priest can walk away so easily, especially with the villainous JuJu (played very well by Kaalan Walker) on Priest’s heels. A tragic shooting leads to Priest playing every angle he can to keep on top and stay alive.

The original Superfly was released in 1972 and arrived in the midst of the socalled “blaxploitaton” film movement. The movement started in 1971 with Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, an act of cinematic defiance in which Van Peebles, after years of playing degrading roles that fed into black stereotypes, decided to make his own movie. Van Peebles plays Sweetback, an on-the-run criminal who, at one point, beats a white cop to death with his handcuffs. Sweetback – in addition to being sexually aggressive, violent and intimidating – also sported a mustache, which was formerly taboo for African-American film actors. Van Peebles’ movie was an indie smash. Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, Black Belt Jones, Blacula and Superfly followed. They changed the way African American men and women appeared in movies: sexy, rebellious and complex.

Priest, the “hero” of Superfly, was especially hard to like. But, accompanied by thrilling music from Curtis Mayfield, the character resonated. While the initial blaxploitation movement waned mostly due to the quality of the later films, the genre never went away.

While there are lots of parodies (like the still-

uproarious I’m Gonna Git U Sucka and Black Dynamite), there have also been real-deal updates (namely Wesley Snipes in Blade) and loving tributes (like most of Quentin Tarantino’s films). The rich, troubling heritage of blaxploitation (a moniker both positive and negative) made me excited about the return of Priest. Unfortunately, this new version is empty and underwhelming.

Jackson is appealing in the lead – his elevated hair is deservedly noted throughout the film. Jason Mitchell’s performance as Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton was among the best of 2015 and, again, he seizes an opportunity to steal the film.

Michael Kenneth Williams has some of the strongest scenes as Priest’s martial arts mentor and Esai Morales is great as essentially the same gangster he plays on Ozark.

provides a handful of echoing, redundant songs on the soundtrack. Far better are the inclusion of Mayfield’s classic Superfly theme and “Pusherman,” though both seem out of place with the modern day setting. Had the filmmakers changed the name of the lead character, this would be unrecognizable as the new Superfly. The best that can be said is that it’s better than the awful, long out-ofdistribution, 1990 film, The Return of Superfly, in which the title character is played

by The Young and the Restless star Nathan Purdee (a young Samuel L. Jackson is in it, too). I recall having a VHS copy of it in a box, where it deserves to remain.

If the new Superfly has a consistent problem, it’s how cheap looking it is. Even by the standards of a B-movie update of a ‘70s drive-in movie classic, there’s nothing here we haven’t seen before. The trailers

tout this as coming from “The Producer of The Matrix Trilogy.” Indeed it is, as legendary producer Joel Silver is the biggest name in the film. Despite Silver’s lineage, there’s not enough action and too many scenes of talking and driving. The filmmakers name is Director X, which is too pretentious for a movie this underwhelming.

There’s a satisfying shoot-out in the lively final feel, but this really should have been tougher and nastier. The opening scenes look too much like a late-’90s P. Diddy video, and, seriously, it’s hard to take a rival gang called Snow Patrol seriously. While it has its moments, the new adventures of Priest are neither super, nor fly. Mario Van Peebles, son of Melvin, made this movie better back in 1991. It’s called New Jack City and is everything you’d want from updated blaxploitation. ■

I’m incredibly disappointed when parents give their kids boring names simply to keep them from being made fun of in elementary school. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Keep moving towards your goal, but try to be openminded. There’s no need to explicitly change your mind about where you think you’re headed; just don’t pitch a fit if you never actually get there. I try not to kill bugs. I assume that on some level they value their lives as much as I value mine, and killing them just because they’re little and I can is cruel and unnecessary. Sometimes I destroy them by accident, and I don’t torture myself with guilt over it, but it feels good to consciously eschew needless nastiness.
