MORE BAD NEWS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE ON ISLANDS People who live on low-lying atolls in the Pacific like Roi-Namur in the Republic of the Marshall Islands may have to evacuate due to rising sea level in as little as 12 years, according to a new study by researchers from the USGS, NOAA and the University of Hawai‘i’s International Pacific Research Center.

The paper appears in the new issue of the journal Science Advances, and it’s rough stuff. Here’s the abstract from the paper, so you can see for yourself: “Sea levels are rising, with the highest rates in the tropics, where thousands of low-lying coral atoll islands are located,” states the abstract. “Most studies on the resilience of these islands to sea-level rise have projected that they will experience minimal inundation impacts until at least the end of the 21st century. However, these have not taken into account the additional hazard of wave-driven overwash or its impact on freshwater availability. We project the impact of sea-level rise and wave-driven flooding on atoll infrastructure and freshwater availability under a variety of climate change scenarios. We show that, on the basis of current greenhouse gas emission rates, the nonlinear interactions between sea-level rise and wave dynamics over reefs will lead to the annual wave-driven overwash of most atoll islands by the mid-21st century.

This annual flooding will result in the islands becoming uninhabitable because of frequent damage to infrastructure

and the inability of their freshwater aquifers to recover between overwash events. This study provides critical information for understanding the timing and magnitude of climate change impacts on atoll islands that will result in significant, unavoidable geopolitical issues if it becomes necessary to abandon and relocate low-lying island states.”

An April 25 news release from the University of Hawai‘i puts the timetable for evacuation in even more dire terms: “The combination of rising sea levels and wave-driven flooding will cause frequent damage to infrastructure and will irreversibly contaminate island freshwater resources by 2030-2060,” it states.

“The tipping point when potable groundwater on the majority of atoll islands will be unavailable is projected to be reached no later than the middle of the 21st century,” said Curt Storlazzi, USGS geologist and lead author of the new report, in the news release.

Seriously, that has to be the least controversial headline in Hawai‘i today. I mean, among residents–for tourists, this is all just Disneyland with a few palm trees and sickly sweet rum drinks, right?

For those of you who for whatever reason aren’t yet convinced that transient vacation rentals represent an alarming danger to Hawai‘i’s whole way of life for people who actually try to live here, the Hawai‘i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice just released a 20-page report that makes it abundantly clear that vacation rental units (VRAs) are making it staggeringly difficult for people who aren’t already wealthy to live here.

“Over just the last two years, the number of VRUs has increased by 35 percent,” states the report, titled Hawai‘i Vacation Rentals: Impact on Housing & Hawai‘i’s Economy. “There are currently 23,000 VRUs being advertised around the state. Up to 93 percent of them are for entire homes, rather than the rent-out-a-room image purveyed by the VRU industry. One out of every 24 housing units in the state is a VRU, with some communities being completely overwhelmed by the industry’s growth. On Kaua‘i, one in eight homes is used as a VRU. In Lahaina, the ratio drops to one in three. The reason why investors are choosing VRUs over long-term rentals is obvious: the average VRU brings in about 3.5 times more revenue than a long-term rental unit.”

Let me repeat this: One in THREE homes in Lahaina is a vacation rental.

For Maui as a whole, one in seven homes is a VRU.

Overheard WOMAN: “I passed out in a sex shop in San Francisco.”

MAN: “We were in line, too.”

Ugh. Here are a few excerpts from the report: • “Forty-three percent of Hawai‘i households rent rather than own—the fourth highest percentage in the nation. Hawai‘i’s “housing wage” (defined as the wage needed to afford a two-bedroom unit at fair market rents) is $35.20–the highest of all the states.

In comparison, the average renter’s real wage is $15.64. A minimum wage worker would need to work 152 hours a week–3.8 full-time jobs–to afford a two-bedroom unit, and 116 hours a week–2.9 full time jobs–to afford a one-bedroom unit.”

•“Nonresidents dominate Maui’s housing market. Sixty percent of condos and 52 percent of homes on Maui are sold to nonresident buyers.”

• “Sixty-six percent of nonresidents who own Maui property report renting out their units. Only 16.7 percent of these owners choose to rent to residents only. Thus, it is no surprise that Maui has the highest percentage of residential units being used as VRUs in the state.”

• “Even when new units are constructed they are often not affordable; Maui has the lowest share of affordable housing in the state. Median sales prices for homes on Maui saw the largest increase (24 percent) in the state from 2010 to 2014. Furthermore, less than a quarter of prospective Maui home buyers are able to make an adequate down payment.”

This is a disaster. In the face of these numbers, the remedies imposed on the VRU industry here seem completely inadequate: • “Potential hosts must obtain a permit, arrange a safety inspection and provide public signage with their contact information.”

• ”Opposition from neighbors can trigger a Maui Planning Commission review of the VRU and neighborhoods have caps on the number of short term rentals that can operate.”

• ”Any dwelling approved for shortterm use must have been constructed more than five years before a permit application is submitted.”

As for what we all do about this, I don’t really know, though there is an election coming up this year. event for their first time. Team Hulakai, from the Big Island, won the men’s and women’s OC2 divisions. Team Hulakai men’s was comprised of Jun Balanga and Keahi Warfield.

“It was pretty good, not too much wind, but plenty of swell,” said Warfield. “It’s a different experience, broadened our horizons and it’s my first time doing the Maliko run, you gotta get one under your belt. The next time around you become more ma‘a [familiar]. It was just good fun!”

The Hulakai women’s team, was made up of Sarah Taylor-Balanga and Kristin Old. “It was pretty scary at times, but it was really fun, there were some good size bumps,” said Taylor-Balanga. “The most fun part was just making it the whole way and not crashing.”

This year’s Women’s OC1 winner, Monica Equivel, also did the Maliko run for her first time. Equivel saw the 10th Annual OluKai Ho‘olaule‘a as an opportunity to compete and get comfortable before the Ka‘iwi Channel crossing next week.

“Today’s my first day trying this run and coming in was the most challenging part, but the jet skis were here and they were guiding everybody in, said Equivel. “The most fun part was also coming in. Everybody is gearing up for the Pa‘a Ka‘iwi Channel Crossing, I think I had that extra nerves that I had to get it out, and feel good going out. Thanks to OluKai and Uncle Archie for a great race.”

CONNOR BAXTER WINS BIG AT OLUKAI HO‘OLAULE‘A Connor Baxter won the Stand Up Paddle and First-Ever Foil Board Race at 10th Annual OluKai Ho‘olaule‘a on Apr 29. Baxter, 23, pushed his limits and won the SUP division for his seventh time, as well as the inaugural Foil Board race. This was the first Foil Board race in history and Baxter competed in the historic event after winning SUP. “This is pretty incredible, OluKai showing that they’re here to push the boundaries and here for the athletes,” said Baxter. “To have the first official event here in my backyard at the OluKai is incredible. I was actually cramping up and not

Ryan Sung grew up in the family business, skateboarding around the factory, cutting cookie samples for the Made in Hawai‘i Festival and making deliveries after obtaining his driver’s license. “We are thrilled to have our son carry on our legacy and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for all of us.”

While Baxter is a seasoned racer, the Maui resident was very aware of the big waves that added an additional challenge to the SUP course, which started at Maliko Gulch and ended at Kanaha Beach Park.

“Fortunately I can say this is what I’m training for off-season in the Kahului Harbor doing laps where there is bump, where water is moving, but it’s not a downwinder,” he said.

“So, I was feeling strong the whole time, but definitely one of the heaviest OluKais we’ve ever done. Waves up to 6-to 8-feet.”

“Last standup paddler made it out of Maliko and the whole gulch closed out, and when that happens you know Pe‘ahi has waves, normally we’re surfing in these conditions,” explained Baxter. “Coming down the coast and seeing the white water just lit up on all the outer reefs. As flat as it was and as light as the wind was, there were still a lot of ocean bumps out there to be had. I took advantage of it and came in first.”

This year’s Women’s SUP winner, Sonni Honscheide, recognized that the big surf played a giant factor in the race. “Conditions were absolutely different [from the first time I won this race] and since this is the 10th Annual OluKai it’s a great honor for me, but I had to fight in the end because it was so hard with the waves,” Honscheide said. “It was really nice to see how beautiful it was from the outside with those big lines rolling in, it was amazing.”

News Of The Weird WAIT WHAT In Dorking, England, Chris Hepworth and his partner, Tanisha Prince, both of London, dove across the finish line in one minute and 37 seconds, setting a course record and capturing the coveted UK Wife Carrying championship on April 8. Any adult couple can compete in the contest–married or not and regardless of gender–which consists of one team member carrying the other, most using the “Estonian carry,” with the “wife” upside-down, her legs over her partner’s shoulders and gripping him around the waist from behind. About 40 pairs competed over the quarter-mile course strewn with hay bales and mud, Reuters reported.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? In Ohio in 2004, six-year-old Alex Malarkey spent two months in a coma after a car accident, awaking as a quadriplegic and telling his family he had visited heaven, seeing angels and meeting Jesus. Alex and his dad, Kevin Malarkey, co-wrote a best-selling book in 2010, “The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven,” but in 2015, Alex admitted he had made up the story to get attention.

“I did not die. I did not go to heaven,” Alex told The Guardian. In a recent effort to set the record straight, Alex filed a complaint April 9 in DuPage County, Illinois, against the book’s publisher, Tyndale House, alleging that “any reasonable person would have realized that it was highly unlikely that the content of the book was true.” The Washington Post reported that while Kevin Malarkey is not a party to the suit–which cites several Illinois statutes regarding the right to privacy, defamation, and financial exploitation of a person with a disability, among others–it does allege that Alex’s dad concocted and sold the story to Tyndale.

The younger Malarkey did not receive any royalties from the sales of the book.

McDonald’s drive-thrus are a chill place to be, if three recent events are any indication. On March 17, police officers called to a McDonald’s restaurant in Okeechobee, Florida, found Derril James Geller of West Palm Beach had passed out in his car while waiting in line. Geller was arrested for driving on a suspended license (a crime for which he had been charged three previous times). But that’s just the tip of the ice cream cone: The Okeechobee News reported that in January, an Okeechobee woman was charged with DUI after passing out at a different area McDonald’s drive-thru, and in December, a Texas man also received a DUI for nodding off in the line at that same McDonald’s.

EWWWWW! Workers renovating the old Dayton’s department store in downtown Minneapolis came across an unusual find in early April: the mummified remains of a monkey. The store

apparently had a pet department in the 1960s, and The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported that Steven Laboe, who worked in the building in the early 2000s, heard stories of a monkey escaping into an air conditioning duct, where it may have met its fate in the form of an exhaust fan. In fact, the mummy does show an injury to the abdomen. “We continue to find pieces of history in the Dayton’s project as we redevelop the building,” Cailin Rogers, a spokeswoman for the redevelopment team, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

THE GREAT TARANTULA CHALLENGE At Bull City Burger and Brewery in Durham, North Carolina, April is Exotic Meat Month! This year, according to WTVD, the restaurant offered a tarantula challenge. Customers were invited to enter their name in a raffle, and if chosen could claim a $30 tarantula burger, which included a pasture-raised beef patty, gruyere cheese, spicy chili sauce–and an oven-roasted zebra tarantula. Those who finished the burger received a commemorative “tarantula challenge” T-shirt.

DO NOT EAT An unnamed Chinese man “accidentally” swallowed a plastic and metal lighter 20 years ago. He neglected to seek medical attention until recently, when he began experiencing stomach pains and other symptoms we’d rather not detail here. In early April, using a camera inserted in the man’s body to locate the lighter, doctors at Dujiangyan Medical Center in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, performed not one, but two surgeries to extract the item.

The Global Times reported that the lighter had been severely corroded by gastric juices.

MY WEIRD OBSESSION You may have read that the company that makes Necco Wafers announced in March that it would have to shut down in May unless a buyer was found. Since then, crazed Necco fans have been stockpiling candy. “Necco Wafers are up 150 percent,” Candystore.com reported in a blog post. “A clear signal of panicbuying.” Katie Samuels, 23, of Florida tried to strike a deal with Candystore.com, a wholesaler. “I offered to trade my 2003 Honda Accord for all of their stock,” Samuels told the Boston Globe. “I don’t have much right now, so I was like, ‘I’ve got this car, and I want all that candy,’ so maybe they would consider it.” Candystore didn’t accept her offer, but Samuels did buy 48 rolls of candy using her credit card.

OOPS Officials in the city of Vordingborg, Denmark, planned the demolition of a 174-foottall silo months ahead of the event, but as onlookers cheered the explosion on April 6, the tower toppled in the wrong direction, landing on a waterfront library and music school.

No injuries were reported, according to The Guardian, and the library interior, while covered with dust, sustained no serious damage. ■

ecently I went to visit one of my most beautiful spots on the Northshore–Maliko Gulch. Many families have frequented there. It’s a wonderful place. Or rather, it was a wonderful place. Because on my most recent visit I saw abandoned vehicle littering the whole place. It was horrible. What a disaster. ■

‘Go For Broke’ Talking story with writer and producer Stacey Hayashi

ahu filmmaker’s Stacey Hayashi’s lifelong dream to tell the story of the 442nd, the WWII Regimental Combat Team made up of Nisei Japanese-American soldiers, began with a comic book. In 2012, Hayashi and illustrator Damon Wong published Journey of Heroes. Hayashi’s initial achievement led to a far more ambitious plan, in which her 45-page graphic novel became a full length motion picture. The result: Go For Broke is an acclaimed festival favorite.

So far, Hayashi’s film (which she wrote and produced while Alexander Bocchieri directed) has won Outstanding Feature Film at the 2018 Normandy WWII Film Festival, the Movie Maker Award at the 2017 Hawai‘i International Film Festival and was voted Best Hawaiian Film 2017 by the Hawai‘i Film Critics Society. I caught up with Hayashi before her film premieres on Maui, in the same theater that coincidentally opened with the star-studded gala premiere of From Here to Eternity in 1953. We discussed the film’s origins, her thoughts on the 1951 Go For Broke movie and collaborating with Jake Shimabukuro.

MAUITIME: When did the idea of making the story of the 442nd into a movie first come to you?

STACEY HAYASHI: In 2001, I was a software engineer and Hawai‘i created a bunch of tax credits for IP industries, including film. I thought, “hey, that’s a great idea”– Hawai‘i has so many stories the world should hear, the Nisei vets topping that list, but, from their perspective. Being young and naive and having absolutely no idea how impossible it is to make a film of this scope and how difficult a task to tell this story correctly, I set out to make it happen.

MT: Was the comic book always a part of the process or was it a means of creating storyboards for your film?

SH: In 2008, the economy was in the toilet and I was working on a previous 442nd script with a friend. It was sad to think that all the time spent on the project would go to waste and the movie would never get made, and my vet friends were passing away... that’s when it dawned on me that a comic book would be a smaller, more feasible project. In the end, Go For Broke

is our own comic book movie, but the heroes and characters in it are real people.

MT: The notion of making Journey of Heroes as a motion picture is so ambitious. What were the first steps you took in making it a reality?

what some of the vets said: “the haole guy gets the girl, and we get the pig.” I thought we could tell something more true to life.

MT: How did you select your director, Alexander Bocchieri?

MT: Have you seen the (out of print/public domain) 1951 Go For Broke movie?

SH: I met Alex while we were both working on our friend Matt Nagato’s documentary for the Dept. of Health: OLA: Health is Everything. He was still in film school and I was working on the comic book. He asked if he could make a documentary on the comic book for his class at UH, and I said sure. It showed a lot of promise. Then, a couple months after the comic book came out, Senator Daniel Inouye passed away. At his funeral, I saw my friends in the legislature and commented that it was too bad that the grant they’d approved years earlier for a movie had lapsed (Governor Linda Lingle never released the funds), and they encouraged me to put in another application. So we did, and I said to Alex, “let’s show them what could be possible.”

SH: I’ve seen the film and it was progressive for its time. But, I’ll always remember

MT: What changes did your screenplay go through during the initial

SH: Finding the right people was the hardest part. Most of the people on the Go For Broke crew were relatively new, as in I’d known them five years or less. The majority of people who provided services and donations–wardrobe, uniforms, vehicles, locations, food, time–were friends I’d made long ago, some as far as 17 years ago when it all began. Securing the funding was a miracle.

While it might have seemed like a large sum, in reality, it was a painfully low amount for a feature length film of the quality we had in mind. But we made it work, thanks to the generosity of many people. It’s a special film.

If anything, it’s all heart.

drafts into filming?

SH: We were writing and shooting last scenes up until August. Alex’s perspective was very valuable; because I’m so close to the story and know it so well, it’s hard to see where the audience might need help identifying who the different parties are or their significance. My biggest fear was that there were so many characters and the story was so complex that people would get confused. And while I wanted to make a film that local and Japanese American people could appreciate, I didn’t want it to be something a mainland audience couldn’t relate to. It’s still a very dense story and people have told me that they’ve watched it several times and every time they see or hear something they’d missed before, so I’m glad they’re doing that. There were a lot of people who gave very valuable feedback and that made it a stronger film.

MT: Did you always envision Jake Shimabukuro creating the score?

MT: Is it too early to ask about a sequel?

SH: Go For Broke: An Origin Story is supposed to be a pilot. The dream is a 10-part limited series, following the guys you meet in Go For Broke, as they make their way through training and fighting overseas with the 100th Battalion, the 442nd and the Military Intelligence Service in the Pacific and the China-Burma-India theater.

But there are also many stories about the home front, and the civil rights debacle of the Japanese incarceration and how brave young Japanese Americans volunteered to serve their country from behind barbed wire. But, it’s always the funding that’s the issue, so if that happens, we can do it. If not, it’ll end here.

MT: How have WWII veterans and Hawai‘i’s Nisei community responded to the film?

SH: They’re pretty happy in general, which is what makes it all worth it for me. They feel comforted they won’t be forgotten, and they know their sacrifices are appreciated. And, for the vets who are in the film–their stories, as well as actually being in the movie, in cameos–it was fun to update them along the way, especially during shooting. It was wonderful having them on set, and our crew really enjoyed meeting them–the real life heroes whose stories we were telling. Introducing the actors to the vets they were portraying and their families was also very special to me. I’m very grateful we were able to get the late Senator Daniel K. Akaka in the film, too... he was always very supportive, and that meant the world to me.

Broke, which is not simply a great Hawai‘imade movie, but a great film, period.

This is a deeply felt work, with many scenes playing like painful memories faithfully recreated. There are brief but potent bits throughout, like a little girl who barely survives a blast outside her home during the Pearl Harbor attack. We see a Japanese man arrested in front of his wife and son (who insist, correctly, that he is not a criminal), a teacher warning the students of his Japanese school that war is inevitable and that they are not to forget that they are Americans; this latter aspect haunts the film, as well as this horrible period of U.S. history.

The film recreates the time when Japanese-Americans (particularly second generation Nisei citizens) were rounded up, denied their rights and put in camps. There’s a scene here that moved me to tears, where a group of imprisoned Japanese men plead with a carpenter to contact their loved ones; the carpenter is stunned but continues to do his job and ignores them.

While Go For Broke is thoroughly entertaining, concludes at an opulent ceremony in front of Iolani Palace and features an epilogue of the real soldiers interlaced with their onscreen counterparts, it’s the pain and hardship in this story that resonates.

Considering how there are only a handful of truly great, locally made, independently films about Hawai‘i that have received wide circulation, the question some may wonder is how this one holds up. The answer is easy: Bocchieri and Hayashi’s film feels like a companion piece to Picture Bride, the superb 1995 film by the late Kayo Hatta. Picture Bride also depicts early 20th century Japanese-Americans living in Hawai‘i, pressing against prejudice and social injustices, and finding meaning in the history and future of their heritage. Bocchieri and Hayashi’s ambitious and often spellbinding film is a worthy companion piece to Journey of Heroes and a unique, vital tribute to the 442nd and their legacy.

SH: Jake is a dear friend from high school, and several years ago–maybe, 10?–I’d asked if he’d write the soundtrack, and he agreed.

Jake was instrumental and always supportive of all my other vet projects and events since, and he was one of the first people I called when I had the idea for the comic book. He was like, “I love it! I’ll play, we’ll fundraise, we’ll get it done!” And as for Jake playing Saburo Maehara, he was great! I knew he’d be great; the camera loves him and the lines I wrote for him are pretty much what he says to kids when he visits schools anyway.

I wrote the role with Jake in mind, and that was fun and a natural fit. What I didn’t know was how nervous he was about it–he was trying to get out of it the day before we shot his scenes! I was like, “Oh my god, don’t do this to me.” I told the vets it was supposed to be him. Finally what it came down to was that I told him that I was positive that if he didn’t do it, that they’d be very sad. So he did it and the rest is history.

As for Jake and the score, watching him record the soundtrack was really one of the highlights for me. Alex had put in temp tracks since that’s what you do before you have your actual music, but as Jake recorded what he’d written and I could see the scenes we’d shot playing out while he recorded,

I knew instantly that the score would dramatically elevate the film and bring out the feelings of that scene like only Jake could.

Hayashi and illustrator Damon Wong first released their Journey of Heroes graphic novel in 2012, composed of true stories of the 442nd in combat and their lives before and after war time. The graphic novel cleverly avoided being a dry history lesson by depicting the soldiers as cute manga figures; in this film adaptation, the handful of main characters are played by charismatic actors but the approach is no less inventive.

The opening credits sports imagery from the graphic novel and Hayashi’s screenplay builds the narrative in an unconventional way: we follow the journey of the established central protagonists but the focus jumps around, even leaving the islands for a look at a Wisconsin Japanese internment camp. The episodic nature allows for more ground to be covered than in a conventional film.

There’s also dreamy cinematography by Jeremy Snell and Anthony Vallejo-Sanderson, first-rate editing by Aaron Yamamoto and a lovely, versatile score by Jake Shimabukuro. While the story does build to an inspiring finish, the style allows isolated personal incidents to drive the narrative.

There are moments in this approach that reminded me of The Thin Red Line, including a scary, deeply unsettling staging of the Pearl Harbor attack. Thanks to the hand-held cinematography, some exceptional CGI and the focus on human struggle, this sequence is remarkable and, for a low budget indie, surprising in its scale.

Of the large cast, Chad Yazawa (playing Akira Otani), Kyle Kozaki (as Dan Inouye) and especially Shiro Kawai (as Principal Maehara) stand out. Some of the supporting cast performances aren’t as polished, which causes the spell of the period setting to wane at times. Occasionally, the dialogue is too on the nose (“More than just war is at stake”), sounding like modern editorializing on history. These flaws don’t undermine the overall impact of Go For

There will be a beer for everyone, with over 90 options of great quality, craft beer. We have more hard cider options than we have ever had.”

Many mainland breweries will also be in attendance pouring beer not available anywhere on Maui. “It’s exciting that you get to try beer that we never get on island, from breweries across the mainland,” said Humphrey. “One even from Texas this year!”

ach year, Maui’s beer enthusiasts flock to the great lawn of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center for a celebration of beer punctuated by diverse music and supplemented with tasty food. For a decade now, the MACC’s Annual Maui Brewers Festival has brought brewers from around Hawaii and the mainland together to showcase beers typically not found on Maui. Now in its 10th year, the May 19 event will bring together island favorites and famous mainland breweries to celebrate the love of the art and craft of beer.

“We are very excited for the 10th this year–it’s going to be awesome,” said Nicole Humphrey, the event coordinator.

Humphrey said that this year’s festival will be the biggest yet, with 45 breweries, 90 tastings and 15 rare beer options.

As usual, many local breweries will be featured, and the popular Hawaii Zone will feature 14 breweries from the islands, including Maui’s own. The Kohala Brewery will pour Talk-Story Pale Ale and Red Sand, while Maui Brewing Company, the event’s

isney/Marvel is releasing their Avengers: Infinity War on the 10th anniversary of their lavish, mammoth successful experiment, the creation of the Marvel Comic Universe (MCU). It began a decade ago with the still-wonderful Iron Man and now concludes with this new phase. While the films themselves are hit and miss, the overall goal of the MCU earns a hearty Mission Accomplished so far. The ambitious notion was of creating shared worlds, characters and ongoing plotlines in films to exist in the same way they do on the printed page.

Nearly every competing studio failed in their similar attempts to match Marvel (hence, no Ghostbusters or “Dark Universe” universe). Marvel, with the exception of a few underwhelming installments, has succeeded in fusing the narrative architecture of 18 prior works and given fans a stack of really good movies. This latest feels like a distinct closing chapter, an end to an era and a satisfying way to look back before moving forward. I haven’t liked the other Marvel movies with the word “Avengers” in the title but I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Alternating between being grim and lighthearted, there’s enough here to excite and stun anyone who feels these movies have nothing new to offer.

We begin with the reminder that Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) is a ruthless intergalactic villain, in search of collecting the all-powerful “Infinity Stones.” Although the Avengers have ostensibly broken up, there’s additional help found in “friendly neighborhood” Spider-Man (Tom Holland, again best taken in small doses), Doctor Strange (Bene-

dict Cumberbatch), the citizens of Wakanda and the Guardians of the Galaxy (who steal the movie with much needed comic relief).

This one has some of the same problems as the other, overstuffed, superpacked, superhero, smash n’ bash teamups. It’s obscenely long and switches focus on wildly contrasting characters so often that there’s no momentum. It’s all stops and starts, with vastly shifting tones from scene to scene.

Note how there are 22 characters on the movie poster! That’s too many for one film and, as usual, some of the less popular characters are sidelined. While Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch has never had more to do in a Marvel movie, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon is stuck in the background.

There’s clear fatigue in the performances of the elder Avengers: Robert Downey Jr. still has a way with biting quips but his chemistry with Gwyneth Paltrow is tired. Scarlett Johansson seems game but all but asks why she’s still doing these

movies (and hasn’t had a long overdue Black Widow vehicle for herself). Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner remains woefully unimpressive but Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has never been this interesting.

Nearly every Marvel supporting cast member makes a return appearance. My reactions to the non-stop cameos ranged from Wow-I-forgot-you-were-in-this (William Hurt’s Thaddeus Ross) to Timeto-retire-and-search-for-a-better-role (Idris Elba’s Heimdall).

Here’s where Avengers: Infinity War goes right: it’s long but allows every scene to breathe and properly develop, which wasn’t the case of the choppy Justice League. Also, whereas Justice League forcibly shoehorned the eagerly awaited Wonder Woman portion, this movie finds the proper place to include new scenes of the Black Panther cast. While the screenplay’s format is redundant (stage a huge battle, stop and talk, fight more, give more exposition, etc.), the action

impresses and the cast seems to relish the uniquely grave mood of the story.

While comic book movie fans run a wide range of ages, the majority of Marvel aficionados I encounter are children, who are likely to find this movie distressing. Scenes of torture, mass killings and characters forced to kill someone they love (in a PG-13 presentation) occur constantly. This is an exceptionally somber film and a better choice for adults, who ought to see this and decide for themselves if they want to subject their keiki to this.

Brolin is basically doing what Oscar Isaac did in X-Men: Apocalypse, though Thanos is more developed than Apocalypse was. The dark journey of Brolin’s deranged character leads to a strikingly bold finale (which would be risky for any film, let alone a mainstream, $300 million franchise product). The conclusion is the film’s greatest, most calculated creative risk and what makes Avengers: Infinity War truly special. Audiences will be talking about the ending of this one for years. ■
