“Security staff maintained control the entire time and resolved the situation,” Schwartz said. “Maui Police were called to report the disturbance, as is procedure, but were notified that the situation was under control and their assistance was not required.”

In any case, Schwartz said that seven inmates face possible misconduct charges for their part in the demonstration. Charges will include inciting a disturbance, interfering with the performance of a correctional officer and threatening a correctional officer. Schwartz added that DPS officials are conducting an internal investigation, and more charges may be filed against additional inmates.

The phone situation seems to have been a particular issue with the inmates. “The MCCC inmate phone system was transitioning to a new vendor over the past week,” Schwartz said. “The phones were not off during this time, but the cutover caused a software issue that was immediately corrected. Inmates are able to use the phones at their designated phone use times.”

Schwatz said that the incident last about 45 minutes, and the prison’s guards were able to defuse the situation “by assuring the inmates that remedies were already in the works.” She added that inmates “quietly went into their cells,” and guards did not use force during the incident.

“Security staff maintained control the entire time,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda, in response to my inquiry.

“The situation did not escalate because staff handled it exactly how they were trained to do. They talked to the inmates, heard their concerns, and handled the situation in an appropriate and professional manner.”

That all may be true, but Schwartz also said that prison officials did call the Maui Police Department during the incident,

Joe Souki, D–Wailuku, because of his repeated instances of sexual harassment would open the door to a woman taking his seat, well, you can forget about it–at least in the interim. On April 14, the Maui County Democratic Party gave three potential candidates to Governor David Ige to replace Souki until a new successor is chosen this November.

The chosen three–out of eight acceptable nominations– are Troy Hashimoto (who ultimately got the job), Dain Kane and Joe Wildman.

Everyone in Hawaii who even glances at the news knows that Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC) is a powder keg. It’s been overcrowded for many years, and right now more than 400 inmates live in a space updated to hold just 301. What’s more, the prison itself isn’t in the best of shape.

Back in September we reported that the prison’s fire control system has been a mess for years–and won’t be completely fixed at least until the end of this year. Some of the prison’s emergency exits doors are also busted. They were supposed to be fixed by the end of March, but that didn’t happen.

“The completion date is currently being revised from the original date due to unforeseen delays caused by one of the subcontractors ceasing operations in 2017,” said Cathy Yasuda, an aide to the state Comptroller, in an Apr. 12 email. “A replacement contractor was approved recently and verification procedures are underway. We expect to have a firm completion date when all reviews and verification procedures are completed, which may take several weeks.”

But the prison’s problems go beyond even that. This sounds amazing, but more than a dozen locks within MCCC’s modules simply don’t work properly anymore.

“There are 15 locks that require manual operation,” Toni Schwartz, the Hawaii Department of Public Safety’s public information officer, said in an Apr. 11 email. “The repairing and replacing of these locks is being addressed.”

Living in such an environment can be bad enough, but when new problems start cropping up involving inmates’ phone, television and food, tensions can boil over.

That seems to be what happened at the prison’s Module A on the afternoon of Monday, Apr. 9. I first heard of the situation–which involved a large number of inmates participating in more of a sit-in than a full-blown riot–that night, but wasn’t able to confirm its particulars until today.

Hashimoto is Maui County Council Chair White’s executive assistant, Kane is a former County Councilmember and Wildman is a Wailuku attorney who in 2011 was appointed to be a 2nd Circuit Court judge but he ultimately declined the post because of an “unresolved situation” at his old law firm.

As for candidates like Lynn Araki-Regan (chief of staff to Mayor Alan Arakawa) and Mary Wagner (an official with the Maui County Department of Management), they’ll have to hope the voters are more sympathetic to them.

The only saving grace was that Wailuku Water Co. boss and former state Senator Avery Chumbley–who other than Souki most exemplifies the Old Boy’s Club in Maui County–didn’t get it. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

COUNTY OF MAUI JOINS DRIVE ELECTRIC HAWAII

Maui County has officially joined Drive Electric Hawaii, a collaboration of groups that share a vision to power Hawaii’s ground transportation with 100-percent renewable energy.

Mayor Alan Arakawa signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) earlier this month to join groups in the Drive Electric Hawaii Initiative, which aims to accelerate the cost-effective electrification of transportation in all passenger, public and fleet vehicles. Also participating in the initiative are the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, State of Hawaii Department of Transportation and Maui Electric Company, among others.

“This MOU reaffirms my goal of steering us away from fossil fuel use and carbon emissions in our ground transportation,” Arakawa said in an Apr. 13 news release. “Over

time the county will also benefit from cost savings because the electric buses are easier to maintain and use much less fuel.”

In December, Maui joined other counties in signing a proclamation solidifying Hawaii’s role as a global renewable energy leader, with all four counties becoming the first in the nation to commit to a 100 percent renewable transportation future.

UH PRESS TO DIGITIZE OUT-OF-PRINT BOOKS Lovers of old books about Hawaii should like to hear this: University of Hawai‘i Press just secured a $100,000 grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to digitize and distribute 22 old, out-of-print UH Press books.

“We are extremely grateful to the Mellon Foundation and the NEH for their continued support,” said Trond Knutsen, UH Press digital publishing manager, in an Apr. 3 UH news release.

“Our goal for this project is to expand upon UH Press’s efforts to revive our rich backlist and make

interim chancellor. “We thank the Mellon Foundation for their assistance in helping us make some of these academic treasures available to the world in online open-access formats.”

This project, which will take 18 months, is part of the Humanities Open Book Program, run by the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. When it’s done, there will be a new UH Press website which will include links to the books. Readers will be able to

Offering this program during National Park Week highlights how parks can support the sharing of traditional knowledge.”

Maui County Council hires controversial former state Taxation Director

he Maui County Council has appointed Maria E. Zielinski, the former Hawaii state Tax Director who suddenly resigned in December following news reports that her department was allegedly interfering with an independent consultant’s work, the new director of its Office of Council Services (OCS). The vote on Apr. 6 was eight to one in favor of Zielinski, with only Councilmember Riki Hokama (a past critic of the OCS) voting against her.

The OCS provides research, clerical and logistical support to Maui County Council members and committees. At least in theory, it’s a nonpartisan office, though two years ago Council Chair Mike White decided that then OCS Director David Raatz had to go. But Sandy

Baz, White’s chosen successor to Raatz, left the office back in December (he returned to his old job as Mayor Alan Arakawa’s Budget Director).

During the Apr. 6 council meeting, four councilmembers spoke highly of Zielinski, but Hokama said nothing before voting no. Hokama also didn’t respond to an Apr. 11 email asking why he voted against Zielinski’s appointment.

At no time during the Apr. 6 County Council discussion on Zielinski’s appointment did anyone refer to her resignation from the Department of Taxation, which took place just four months ago.

In fact, no one even mentioned that Zielinski had worked for that department.

Governor David Ige appointed Zielinski, a previous comptroller for the

State of Hawaii, to be state Tax Director in December 2014. Her exit four years later occurred during a time of intense controversy and trouble at the Department of Taxation, which is trying–at great expense–to modernize its computer systems. Ige took the project away from Zielinski’s control in July 2017, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on Dec. 1, 2017, but worse news was to come.

“A consultant hired by the state to oversee the $60 million modernization of the Department of Taxation’s computer systems was instructed by state tax officials on which subjects ‘should and should not’ be addressed in its supposedly independent monitoring reports to lawmakers and the public, according to a new report,” the Star-Advertiser reported on Dec. 1. “The tax department also requested changes in the reports by consultant Advan-Tech LLC before they were made public, which the consultant said is ‘not the norm’ in its experience.”

Just four days later, the Star-Advertiser reported that Zielinski had resigned, though the exact reason has never been made public. “Ford Fuchigami, administrative director in the governor’s office, said Zielinski informed him yesterday that she was resigning,” the Star-Advertiser reported on Dec. 5.

“He declined to say if she was asked or forced to resign, saying that he cannot elaborate on a personnel matter.”

A staffer at the Office of Council Services said Zielinski doesn’t start work there until May 1, and couldn’t provide any contact information for her. Zielinski didn’t respond to a Facebook message regarding this story.

Look, none of this means that Zielinski will be a bad OCS Director–or even that she was a poor administrator at the Department of Taxation. But the Maui County Council not even publicly acknowledging the troubling circumstances surrounding her departure from her last job–to say nothing of explaining to the public what exactly happened–is both insulting to members of the public who read the news and simply asking for trouble. Instead, councilmembers used their time during the Apr. 6 meeting to heap praise on Zielinski.

Councilmember Stacy Crivello referred to Zielinski’s undergraduate degrees in accounting and biology from City University of New York, her membership in the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants and her previous experience at the Maui County Department of Finance, Council on Aging and the Maui Humane Society Board of Directors, but said nothing about her time at the state Department of Taxation (Crivello didn’t respond to an email inquiry asking for

comment for this story).

“She is creative and enthusiastic with a demonstrated track record of problem-solving skills and organizational abilities,” Crivello said. “She will be a valuable addition to the Office of Council Services.”

Councilmember Yuki Lei Sugimura, who also didn’t respond to an email asking for comment, similarly praised on Zielinski without mentioning her recent resignation. In fact, Sugimura said she interviewed Zielinski and “did do an employment check” on her–by calling a powerful landowner.

“When I was talking to her she mentioned to me that she worked with Peter Baldwin,” Sugimura said during the Apr. 6 Council meeting. “He had glowing reports. The one statement that he said that I think is important is that he said, ‘She is honest as the day is long.’ And that he took financial advice from her.

And he also said that sometimes, she didn’t say the things he wanted to hear.

And I liked hearing that, too, because it takes courage.”

Councilmember Kelly King said she was “thoroughly impressed” with Zielinski, and that she was “very appreciative that we found somebody of her caliber,” but said nothing about her time at the state Department of Taxation or the questions surrounding her resignation. Reached a few days after the meeting, King said that she did know about Zielinski’s resignation before the Apr. 6 vote.

“Yes, I know about the resignation and was satisfied with the response from both Ms. Zielinski and from those closer to the situation although I was not authorized to do a full investigation,” King said in an Apr. 12 email. “If she is willing to continue on past the end of this council term, I may try to get further confirmation, but her performance throughout the rest of this year should weigh heavily.”

Council Chair Mike White, who said at the Apr. 6 hearing that he “did some checking” into Zielinski, also gave her high marks while steering clear of the controversy surrounding Zielinski’s tenure as state Director of Taxation (White didn’t respond to an email asking for comment).

News Of The Weird MISTAKEN IDENTITY Around 4:30 a.m. on March 22, High Point, North Carolina, 911 dispatchers received a surprising call from a man informing them he had broken into a business. “Yes, this is Jesus Christ, and I just broke into the Pizza Hut,” claimed 46-year-old Richard Lee Quintero of Greensboro, according to WFMY TV. “Jesus is here, he’s back to Earth. I just broke in and had a pizza. I’m Jesus,” Quintero told dispatchers. “Because I’m Jesus, I can do whatever I want.” He also complained that “everybody’s been treating me mean.”

High Point police officers arrested Quintero and charged him with breaking and entering and larceny.

Shannon Dean Egeland, 43, of Kuna, Oregon, was found guilty Feb. 28 in an elaborate scheme to delay a prison sentence and collect insurance. The Idaho Statesman reported that shortly before Egeland was to begin a 10-year jail term in 2014 for his role in a $20 million housing scandal, he took out a disability insurance policy and talked his then-17-year-old son into shooting him in the legs with a 20-gauge shotgun, which would delay his prison term -- not to mention let him collect on the new insurance policy. After the teenager shot him, Egeland called police and said he’d been assaulted, but police became suspicious when they found Egeland’s wallet and BMW were still at the scene. U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown tacked three years and 10 months of additional time onto Egeland’s original sentence. Egeland, who eventually lost his left leg, stood before the judge on his prosthetic leg and said he’d had a lot of time to reflect on his crimes and realized he needs mental health counseling. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Bradford called him a “menace to society.”

A traditional March wedding at Peckforton Castle in Tarporley, Cheshire, England, was briefly interrupted when an owl trained to deliver the rings to a waiting best man changed its mind about where to land. The betrothed Jeni Arrowsmith and Mark Wood of Wrexham watched as the barn owl flew down the aisle toward the best man, but a seated groomsman then pointed at the bird, which it took as a signal to fly to his hand. “The owl just dived in and hit the guy–who is terrified of birds!” said wedding photographer Stacey Oliver. “He fell off his chair.” “Everyone was absolutely hysterical,” the bride later told the BBC. “It made the wedding because we were talking about it all night.”

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS When an intoxicated man arrived at the Delaware State Police Troop 1 station in

Wilmington on March 20, looking for a ride home, officers thought he seemed familiar.

Turns out he was Christopher McDowell, 34, a suspect in a Feb. 22 shoplifting incident at a local Kohl’s store, according to the News Journal. McDowell was charged with shoplifting and arraigned, then released on $1,000 bail. After he made a phone call to a friend for a ride home, his Kohl’s accomplice, April Wright, 48, showed up–and she too was arrested and charged.

FEUDS In Toronto, a group of animal rights advocates started protesting outside a restaurant called Antler in early December.

By March, the protests had grown, and Antler’s co-owner, Michael Hunter, had had enough of the “murder” signs and “You’ve got blood on your hands” chants.

So on March 23, he told the Globe and Mail, he figured, “I’m going to have my own protest... This is who we are and what we do. So I went and got a deer leg.”

Hunter brought a cutting board, knife and the hindquarter of a deer into the front window and butchered the meat while the protesters looked on. As a result, Hunter and the protesters are now trying to open a dialogue, and reservation requests at Antler have increased.

WORST DRIVING TEST FAIL EVER A young driver in Buffalo, Minnesota, wasted no time earning an EPIC FAIL on her driver’s test on March 21 when she rammed the car into the examination station before she’d even pulled out of the parking space. As the driving test began, the 17-year-old shifted her 2014 Chevy Equinox into drive instead of reverse and hit the accelerator, causing the car to lurch forward, jump the curb and crash through the window of the station, located in a strip mall. While the driver was not hurt, the examiner, 60, was taken to a hospital with non-critical injuries. Buffalo Police Chief Pat Budke told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that no charges would be filed.

OOPS! Presumably in the throes of a serious case of munchies, Lizabeth Ildefonso, 44, drove up to the security booth at the Suffolk County (New York) jail at 10:12am on March 16 and tried to order a “bacon, egg and cheese” sandwich. Deputy Sheriff Yvonne DeCaro explained that she was at the jail, but Ildefonso “insisted that she really wanted a sandwich,” the Riverhead News-Review reported. The deputy noticed Ildefonso’s eyes were dilated and glassy, and that she had white powdery residue in her left nostril. DeCaro also checked her license and found it was not valid. After failing a field sobriety exam, Ildefonso was charged with felony driving while ability impaired by drugs and driving without a valid license. ■

What we learned about plastic pollution and Hawaii from the sixth International Marine Debris Conference PHOTO BY ANDERS LYON

I

t’s pervasive, persistent, produced from petrochemicals. It takes many forms and can be found as lightweight Styrofoam packaging, rigid polyvinyl chloride pipes, polyethylene water bottles, high-density polyethylene laundry and milk bottles, nylon ropes and nets and thousands of variations and applications. Look around you and count all the things made of drastic plastic.

Our modern food service is largely dependent on its insulating, waterproof qualities, when used in food packaging, beverage bottles, produce and ZipLoc bags, Tupperware and polystyrene foam containers for our take-out or coffee cups. Many of these qualify as “single-use” plastics, packaged for convenience and easily disposed, or not-soeasily recycled and repurposed.

Though omnipresent in our 21st century world, plastic did not exist at all until 1907, when Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented a synthetic polymer that proved both viable and inexpensive. Bakelite, the early phenol formaldehyde resin he developed and which bears his name, was used to make buttons, jewelry, telephones, children’s toys and more, and is often coveted by collectors.

With the continuing development of many types of plastic, global production grew from 1.5 million metric tons (mt) in 1950, reaching 100mt in 1989, 200mt in 2002 and accelerating to 335mt in 2016.

Along the way, it became apparent that cheap, sturdy, versatile plastic, while a boon to 20th century consumer culture, was also a bane to the environment, and to the health of humans and many other living creatures. Notably, beyond the tonnage

ending up in our landfills or as roadside litter, the discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by Captain Charlie Moore put plastic on people’s radar as a persistent pollutant in the world’s oceans. It’s estimated that 80 percent of all marine debris is some form of plastic.

Last month, more than 30 Hawaii marine debris experts, scientists and ecoadvocates spent a week in San Diego at the sixth International Marine Debris Conference. The Hawaii contingent joined more than 700 attendees from 50 countries, a considerable increase from the fifth IMDC, held in Honolulu with 200+ attending.

Dianna Cohen, a co-founder and CEO of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, referred to this upswing as a “total revolution, a blossoming. All the studies on microplastics, microfibers and defining marine debris as plastic is a huge shift.”

Cohen is also an artist and curator, and spent years crafting elaborate artwork out of plastics and marine debris before an epiphany led her to help found PPC in 2011.

She said she witnessed the plastic in her art degrading over time, and realized that’s also what happens in the world’s oceans, as smaller and smaller plastic pieces and fibers are ingested by sea life of all kinds: fish, turtles, crabs, plankton and seabirds, whose carcasses are sometimes found with more than a hundred plastic pieces in their bellies.

Plastic Pollution Coalition currently includes 721 groups from 60 countries, and a number of notable actors and musicians.

Its website (Plasticpollutioncoalition.org) features an ocean of information, such as their Global Plastic Reduction Toolkit.

“I don’t want to take on the entire petrochemical industry,” says Cohen, “I

believe we should go for the low hanging fruit.” She believes local legislative campaigns to restrict plastic bags, polystyrene, straws and bottled water are all doable.” She advocates adding a fourth “R” to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle dictum; Refuse single-use plastic.

The opening plenary at the 6-IMDC quickly brought the enormity of the issues into focus. Sir David Attenborough, British naturalist and narrator of the Life on Earth broadcasts stated in a video message that, “If we were clever enough to invent plastics, we should be smart enough to get rid of or control them.”

Barbara Hendrie of the United Nations Environmental Programme, North America termed the issues, “One of the greatest challenges of our times.” She stated that we need informed citizens and “We need strong government policies to require a circular model where we produce and re-use.”

But keynote speaker Afroz Shaw, a lawyer from Mumbai, India urged immediate action.

“Don’t wait for the big boys [government] to tell you what to do,” Shaw said. “We don’t need a law to tell us what is right to do on our planet.” Shaw was honored as a UN 2016 Champion of the Earth for organizing the World’s Biggest Beach Cleanup project on Versova beach where he played on as a child.

Habib El-Habr is the Coordinator for the UNEP Global Programme for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land Based Activities. He dropped a bombshell by informing the audience that plastics production is slated to increase by some 40 percent, up to 500 million tons by 2025 and 600mt by 2030.

“Ultimately this is a problem of design,” he said. “How on Earth can we bear this

increasing amount of plastic if we can’t handle it now?”

El-Habr also called for Expanded Producer Responsibility, re-thinking production and consumption,” said El-Habr. “Do we really need straws when we order our juice, microplastics in our cosmetics and microbeads in our toothpaste?”

Conrad McKerron of As You Sow works with the big guys. His presentation on Mobilizing Markets for Social Change related his strategies for forming a socially responsible investment community. McKerron regularly attends shareholders meetings of corporations that are the biggest plastic users: Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Unilever. Some are listening, and are working to modify some packaging such as drink pouches, which currently have no recycling.

Corporations McKerron said are not responding include Mondelez (Oreo), Kraft/ Heinz and Kroger. He reiterated that there are more plastic factories scheduled to be built in years to come, due to a glut of cheap fossil fuels extracted by fracking, and the gradual shift away from liquid fuels as demand increases for electric vehicles.

Stiv Wilson of The Story of Stuff drove that point home. He cited an article in The Guardian that reported 318 new projects fueled by a $180 billion investment since 2010 by fossil fuel giants Exxon, Shell and others, according to the American Chemistry Council.

Continued from page 12 and her sister launched an effort called Bye Bye Plastic Bags, which has helped galvanize advocacy across their island of three million people and beyond. She spoke of youth empowerment, proclaiming that, “We are 25 percent of the population, but 100 percent of the future.”

One of the main take home messages was that used or discarded plastic has low value, and most types are difficult to recycle or repurpose. There were a few notable exceptions, such as David Stover of Bureo, which converts discarded fishing nets into premium products including skateboard decks, surfboard fins and sunglasses.

Brodie Neill, originally from Tasmania and working in London, developed techniques to incorporate hard plastics in his museum quality furniture pieces. Apparel company Adidas recently reported they sold one million pairs of shoes made from ocean plastic last year in collaboration with the environmental group Parley for the Oceans.

“Recycling alone is not the solution,” said Stover. But it may lead to a significant carbon reduction compared to incinerating discarded plastics or producing new ones, he said.

HAWAII EFFORTS AND INITIATIVES Hawaii’s marine debris efforts and scientific studies were featured in a number of 6-IMDC technical sessions. University of Hawaii researchers reported impacts of microplastics on marine organisms, including zooplankton.

Surfrider Kauai has taken on removal of massive fishing net balls from the beaches and coastlines of the Garden Island. Natalie McKinney and Doorae Shin of Kokua Hawaii Foundation related many of their initiatives and education efforts, including Plastic Free Hawaii and designing a Zero Waste footprint for the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2016, which hosted 10,000 people from 160 countries.

Musician Jack Johnson and his wife Kim founded Kokua Hawaii Foundation and were

both panelists. They spoke of efforts to have their concert tours avoid plastic bottles and other throwaways. Surfrider hosted a small rooftop showing of Jack’s film Smog of the Sea at a quaint restaurant in Pacific Beach, overlooking San Diego’s Mission Bay. The film follows a research boat through the calm waters of the Sargasso Sea, where their “manta trawler” net turned up tiny plastic pieces virtually every time they sampled. And Jack graced the audience with a couple of his classic tunes.

In 2014, Fawn Liebengood was a cofounder of 808 Cleanups, adding a beach and ocean element to original efforts targeting graffiti on Oahu hiking trails.

While many Hawaii organizations may do monthly, quarterly or annual cleanups, 808 conducts them four times daily. In 2017 they picked up 135,000 pounds of trash, with the help of 5,688 volunteers.

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii began as a nonprofit in 2010, and has grown to one of the premier cleanup and education groups working throughout the islands. Led by a small team including Executive Director Kahi Pacarro and scores of volunteers, their Ocean Plastics program has helped recycle over 200,000 pounds of marine debris plastic since 2011.

Megan Lamson of Hawaii Wildlife Fund and Lauren Blickley, a Maui marine biologist and owner of Swell Consulting co-hosted a session detailing Hawaii as leaders in passing measures to restrict plastics and curb marine debris. “Maui has progressively moved towards more sustainable solutions and is recognized as a leader in the effort to break free from our dependency on plastics, said Blickley.

They detailed the plastic bag ban, passed first

by Maui County in 2010, with the other three counties following suit by 2015.

Tobacco Free beaches and parks passed the Maui County Council in 2014 on an astonishingly fast track, in large part to high school student participation.

Maui County was the first to pass restrictions on polystyrene food service wear, culminating in five to six years of efforts hampered by industry lobbyists, including the American Chemistry Council.

Food service vendors and retailers must discontinue using polystyrene foam after December 31 of this year or face stiff fines.

Hawaii Island passed a similar measure soon after, and at press time, state Senate Bill 2498 is still alive. If passed, it would distinguish Hawaii as the first state to institute such a bill.

“Plastic pollution is a global issue, but the solutions start locally,” said Blickley.

She likes giving out stainless steel straws, which she considers a “gateway” to further conversations and meaningful actions.

Seabury School honor student Camry Gach recently completed her eighth grade project, which she titled, “Reducing Waste on Maui.” She completed six components for her project: Producing a hilarious educational video on choosing to avoid plastic packaging (you can see it on YouTube); held a zero-waste birthday party; went doorto-door in her neighborhood to spread awareness; conducted a beach cleanup and evaluated the types of trash collected; started a vermi-compost bin, using worms to consume food waste; and volunteered for a large zero-waste event at Ho‘omau.

Like Melati Wijsen of Bali’s Bye Bye Plastic Bags, Camry Gach’s efforts and youth empowerment point the way for us all to do something, anything to step back from the proliferation of throwaway plastics that surround us.

Ed Lyman of the Mauibased Hawaiian Islands Whale Entanglement Network has a job description that would surely have stumped contestants on the old TV show, What’s My Line. A NOAA employee, Lyman and partner Dave Mattila have freed 17 whales of 68 entangled cetaceans spotted since 2002. They have removed over 7,000 feet of rope and line, some traced to gear from as far away as the Aleutians and Southeast Alaska–2,450 nautical miles from Hawaii.

Repurposed fabric made from recycled fishing nets is the closed-loop solution for stylish swimwear designed by two Maui women, Kelley Chapman and Anna Lieding of Manakai Swimwear. Chapman has been around water much of her life, working on boats and for a bikini company before forging out on her own in 2015. Through her extensive research and vetting she discovered that the fashion industry is one of the top global polluters after agri-biz/meat and fossil fuels. Often, as well, there may be social justice issues on how the garments are made.

The company’s nylon fabrics are sourced from two European re-manufacturers, Econyl and Carvico-Vita. Chapman noted that some 70 million barrels of crude oil is used annually making fabrics used mainly for swimsuits and yoga wear. It’s no wonder the Manakai Swimwear website includes the following quote: “Sustainability is the new sexy.”

ast week, I found myself sitting on the floor in Down to Earth in Kahului, which was a new experience for me. I was pumping liquid peppermint soap into a previously-used Dr. Bronner’s bottle.

It’s with some shame that I’ll admit that this was my first time refilling a bottle from the bulk products. I’ve always recycled–I learned from my mom, who recycles everything from tea wrappers to pickle jars. But I know that recycling isn’t good enough. Like many of my fellow Maui residents, I care about my footprint, but sometimes that’s all I do. I notice (and hate) when I’m using a plastic fork, I dabble in volunteering for beach cleanups and I haven’t used a plastic water bottle in years, thanks to the mass popularization of first Nalgene bottles and now Hydroflasks. But I know I can do more.

Say No to Single-Use Plastic products It’s okay to start with just a fork, or a coffee cup. Business owners and employees are typically fine with this request.

Baristas at coffee shops don’t even blink when you bring your own cup. With trepidation, I brought a glass container to a food truck recently, but the owners were friendly about it, then the tourist behind me in line wanted to know what I was doing, which sparked a good conversation about Maui’s trash problem.

Stop buying crap Anyone who’s had to move realizes that junk piles up, and sometimes it’s just easier to throw it all away and start over. But what if you stopped buying those things in the first place? Cheap plastic toys even-

Shop at farmers markets Farmers markets are a great alternative to big box stores, since few things are wrapped in plastic (like the last cucumbers I bought at Costco, which were individually wrapped in plastic, the again wrapped in plastic–yikes) and most of the products are local. Bring your own carry bag and you’re good to go. Bonus is the essential feeling of community you get when you know the person who grows your tomatoes.

Buy used stuff Shopping at thrift stores and donating your unused or old things to thrift stores is another high-impact way of reducing landfill fodder. Manufacturing and shipping clothing takes a big toll on the environment, and lots of clothing ends up in landfills. Though Savers is closed, we still have Goodwill. Even cheaper and better are the numerous church thrift stores around Maui: St. Joseph in Makawao, St. Anthony

Kamalani Pahukoa sells Pono Pa‘ina reusable bamboo utensil sets that are meant to replace single-use plastics. “We’re the most isolated islands in the world,” Pahukoa said. “Our kuleana to promote sustainable and zero waste living begins by eliminating single-use plastic in our islands.” If the cost of these feels prohibitive, start small.

Recycling helps, but don’t rely on it Recycling is “endangered practice,” says UH Maui College professor Tim Botkin. Most plastic isn’t recycled, and plastic can only be recycled a few times before it has to be thrown away. Glass and aluminum can be recycled endlessly, but plastic is far more ubiquitous and harms beaches and marine life. We also have no remanufacturing plants on Maui, which means we have to ship all of our recycling to China, which for obvious reasons isn’t a sustainable solution. EAST MAUI TARO FESTIVAL – It’s time for the 26th annual East Maui Taro Festival. The festival is centered around taro (kalo), the essential staple food of the Hawaiian diet. 'Rampage' ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 107 Min.

arly into Peter Berg’s still-fantastic 2003 action/comedy The Rundown, Dwayne Johnson walks into a bar (stop me if you’ve heard this one) and bumps into Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ah-Nuld taps Johnson on the shoulder, says, “Have fun in there” and literally walks out of Johnson’s movie. The moment is a symbolic gesture on Schwarzenegger’s part, as he was literally passing the Action Movie Hero torch over to Johnson.

It felt premature at the time, as Johnson was billed only as The Rock (his WWE character) and had made just a couple of movies. Now, that scene seems almost historical, as Johnson truly has become the kind of household name, beloved action superstar, fitness/hard work guru, All-American success story and likable man’s man that the former Governator was in his prime. Unfortunately, if Johnson has followed Schwarzenegger’s movie path, then he’s currently in the Jingle All the Way phase of his career.

Rampage is Johnson’s second video game movie and only a slight improvement over the obnoxious Doom adaptation he made in

2005. Here, Johnson plays a warrior-turnedzoo-primatologist who cares for George, a gorilla who grows to an enormous size. Thanks to a flurry of space junk, George and two other creatures become the size of buildings and thrash everything in their path to smithereens.

Thankfully, the world can be saved by a scientist (Naomie Harris, slumming it big time) and an off-the-grid agent (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, clearly trying to be Billy Bob Thornton)... but really, you only need Dwayne Johnson.

I have no idea who this movie is for. The dialogue is terrible from start to finish but, since this initially seems like a children’s film, I was willing to forgive the awful quips and enjoy the monster mash. Despite the sentimental relationship George has with Johnson, Rampage has a real mean streak. The PG-13 rating appears to have been achieved after editing this down from an R; note Johnson’s sanitized F-bomb, how the camera cuts away from graphic dismemberments and the gigantic body count. Johnson coproduced and certainly knows how to entertain but he misjudged his audience this time.

Fans of the game this is based on will note that the arcade version is visible in the background of one scene and how the extended climax recreates some of the game’s highlights.

It’s what you’ll do to get out of theater once the movie starts

The Rock takes on a giant croc–It practically writes itself!

Rampage is livelier than Pacific Rim: Uprising and has a couple of good action sequences (the best of which features Joe Manganiello).

But as the movie progresses, it not only becomes relentlessly stupid but truly dubious. There’s an out-of-place, too-dark flashback scene where George witnesses his parents being slaughtered by poachers(!).

Then, there’s a massive skyscraper collapsing, followed by clouds of smoke and debris, with survivors running to one another in slow motion. The target audience for Rampage may be too young to remember 9/11, but the imagery (as well as the roughness of the violence) is so on-the-nose and grim that it kills what an easygoing escapist romp Johnson seems to think this is.

I really like Johnson but I’m worried about his movie choices, many of which are lousy sequels to dead franchises that he carries etire-

ly on his massive shoulders. At some point, audiences will note (and possibly mock) how Johnson seems to be playing the exact same guy, wearing the exact same white t-shirt and walking through all of his movies in the exact same what-me-worry manner. That day will come but, for now, here’s hoping someone gives him some better career advice.

Johnson will get away with Rampage, just as he grinned his way through Baywatch, Hercules, G.I. Joe Retaliation and a lot of other watchable but moronic movies. At this point, his high points are The Rundown and Moana. What he needs is a Terminator or Total Recall–a chance to work with a great director and a great script.

According to Johnson’s overstuffed IMDB page, Johnson is currently making a movie out of the Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland. I wonder if he’s also thinking about playing Mr. Freeze. ■

When you accidentally bite the inside of your cheek, it’s usually not so bad at first. But then you end up chomping that same spot a few more times that day, each time making things worse. That’s similar to what you’re doing with an emotional problem here: aggravating it (probably accidentally) and making it far worse than it was at first, because you can’t quite leave it alone. If we were talking about an inner-cheek-injury, you could give it a chance to escape your teeth by stuffing a bit of gauze in there. This problem, while less concrete, can be dealt with nearly as easily. What does gauze do? It keeps you away from the injury. Find something that will work like that here, and just like your self-inflicted mouth wound, the problem will remedy itself.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You’re not the attention-grabber that Aries is, or as needy as an unevolved Cancer, but you still get frustrated when things are never about you, even when they by all rights ought to be (on your birthday, for example).

It’d be nice if people stepped up on their own and gave you the love and admiration you deserve, but that’s quite unlikely–not because they don’t appreciate you, but because it’s easy to forget to show it. By all means, give your friends and family a chance to give you a day (hell, a couple hours) that’s all about you, but don’t hate them if it slips their minds. After a week away, I’m aglow with the simple pleasures of home: my own bed, a decent cup of coffee, familiar foods, etc. Because you haven’t exactly been similarly appreciative of your life’s simple pleasures, the astrological forces that be are probably going to (temporarily) take them away from you soon. It’s for your own good, so that you’ll be especially grateful for them when you get them back. Luckily, you haven’t been deprived yet. Since you don’t know how long you’ll have to do without all that good stuff, why not take a moment to properly appreciate it now?

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Graffiti, as an art form, can be brilliant. Too often, though, it’s barely more evolved than dogs pissing on fire hydrants–something only other dogs (or, in this case, graffitists) can appreciate. I wish graffiti artists more often conspired to simply make things more beautiful, interesting and/or thought-provoking for everyone, instead of simply scrawling their personal scribble everywhere. There’s nothing wrong with what you’re up to; it’s just rather limited. What you’re doing now is scrawling a tag only another graffitist could decipher and interpret. However, what you could be doing is making something that would accomplish that, and more: it would make everyone get your message, not just the person it was meant for.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Pride can be your downfall, Leo. You know this. Although you should be proud of all you accomplished, you’re pushing it a little too hard. Think of how much cooler it is when someone subtly downplays all they’ve done, and later you find out on your own exactly how amazing they are. It’s a million times more impressive than when they just come right out and tell you. Have a little faith in your would-be admirers. They don’t need to be told why you’re great. This week at least, let them figure that out (or not) on their own.

“You’re late!” If I had a dollar for every time you’re likely to have someone bark that at you this week, I’d be able to take us all out to a very fancy dinner. Don’t sweat your chronic tardiness, though. Perversely, it’s actually a good thing. It means everything you’re up to is going so well, and so enjoyably, that you’re likely to have trouble tearing yourself away to get to the next thing on your agenda. So you’ll probably barely notice when people get annoyed or scold you; you’ll simply be having too much fun.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

My dog’s bored when I take him to work. Yet he’s eager to come with me nevertheless, probably for the lovely walk there and back. Although you’re stuck in a situation that’s lame, there can still be plenty to feel good about; focus on that, and you’ll sail through with nary a psychological scratch nor bruise. For my dog, the tedium of sitting around waiting for me to finish writing is instantly forgotten during the thrilling, scent-filled walk home.
