HAWAII CONSUMER DEBT IS BAD, GETTING WORSE Oh look, more bad news about the financial state of Hawaii residents. This shouldn’t surprise anyone reading this, but things are bad out there. Sure, unemploy-

ment’s very low, but for the most part the jobs that are available are low-paying. In fact, income levels for just about all jobs in Hawaii fall below the national averages.

On Feb. 27, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) released a new report on consumer debt. Titled 2017 Quarterly Consumer Debt Report (exciting, I know), the report shows–to no one’s surprise–that debt is rising here faster than the nation as a whole.

“This report highlights why home equity lines of credit and home equity loans are more popular in Hawaii than the nation due to our high home prices,” said DBEDT Director Luis P. Salaveria in a Feb. 27 DBEDT news release. “We saw the number of accounts in these two types of financing methods increase, while the number of accounts

housing payment in Hawaii is $1,091 (one of the higher figures nationwide), while the average annual income is $56,889 (one of the lower figures). That’s a bad ratio, the results of which we can see in the latest Hawaii DBEDT report.

“Chief State Economist Dr. Eugene Tian noted that the highest growth in debt occurred in bankcard loans and personal loans for both Hawaii (9.4 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively), and the nation (9.8 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively) between the first and fourth quarter of 2017,” stated the Feb. 27 DBEDT news release. “The outstanding balance for home equity loans increased 7 percent in Hawaii but decreased 2.3 percent at the national level between the first and fourth quarter of 2017.”

State Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui, made headlines across Hawaii on Friday, Mar. 9 when he sent out a few Tweets denouncing the naming of Honolulu International Airport after the late U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye.

“In order for sexual violence to end, men need to know they can no longer get away with it. But when we name an airport after an accused serial rapist, we show them that they can,” said Ing, who is running for Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District seat. Almost immediately, Ing came under fire from one Twitter user, who pointed out that Ing himself had voted a year ago to name the airport after Inouye.

“I told the reporter, I didn’t know at the time,” Ing responded on Twitter. “He was a hero of mine. When I heard the rape accusations from 9 women, I was stunned.

Most millennials didn’t know, because the power structure buried it for decades.”

The denunciations came quickly. The Daniel K. Inouye Institute on Oahu immediately put out a statement, according to Hawaii News Now. “Senator Daniel K. Inouye passed away more than 5 years ago,” said the Institute statement. “It is incredibly mean spirited to accuse him of a crime when he is not here to defend himself. It is unfortunate that Mr. Ing would attempt to smear the Senator and his family’s name to attract attention to his congressional campaign. This is not conduct becoming of a member of Congress.”

But the thing is, Ing was correct. Inouye WAS an “accused serial rapist.” The charges date to 1992. Inouye denied it all when he was alive, of course (he died in 2012 at the age of 88), and the allegations never went to court. But they still pop up from time

to time. In fact, Civil Beat columnist Denby Fawcett wrote about the allegations just a few months ago.

“In 1992, Inouye’s hairdresser, Lenore Kwock, alleged that the senator forced her to have sex with him and that he groped her in a hair salon after that. Inouye denied the allegations, as well as unsubstantiated claims that he had abused nine other women,” Fawcett wrote in her Nov. 28, 2017 column, titled “Would Dan Inouye Have Survived 1992 Sex Allegations Today?”

While it’s true that Inouye denied the allegations when he was alive, it’s also true that the political climate back in ‘92 was very different than today. The media was far more deferential to powerful men back then than it is today (even with the power of the #MeToo movement, life is still rough on women who accuse powerful men of sexual harassment and assault).

So what was the problem with Ing’s statements? The answer lies in Fawcett’s 2017 column. In it, she interviewed Annelle Amaral, a former state legislator who said she lost power because she had supported Kwock, Inouye’s preeminent accuser.

“Amaral believes if Inouye were alive today and was confronted with similar allegations of sexual harassment, his backers would be just as ready to be on his side,” Fawcett wrote. “‘I think Hawaii remains a closed shop politically,’ she said Saturday.

‘Inouye’s supporters would continue to protect him from possible censure. People would just shut up and say nothing.’”

Which is pretty much what’s happening today.

DBEDT, is stunning: “Among the population with at least one credit line (scored population), the average debt per person was $64,642 for Hawaii, 46 percent, which is about $20,000 higher than the national average of $44,284 during the fourth quarter of 2017,” stated the DBEDT news release.

Put another way, Credible Labs’ findings show that “Residents of Hawaii spend, on average, 36.2% of their monthly paychecks on credit card, student loan, and housing payments—the highest percentage in the nation, and over 43% more than residents of Michigan.” While the average monthly credit card payment across the U.S. is $200, it’s $238 in Hawaii–one of the highest in the nation.

Arnie Koss of Kula and his twin brother, Ron Koss, were recently celebrated as innovators for creating baby food grown without herbicides and pesticides. The Koss brothers were honored as natural foods industry pioneers in a Mar. 9 ceremony inducting them into the 2018 Hall of Legends at New Hope Media’s Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California.

The siblings became pioneers in the organic foods movement in the 1980s when they created the nation’s first organic baby food product in Vermont, Earth’s Best Baby Foods. The baby food was the first organic consumer product to cross into the mainstream food products world and be sold on the shelves of supermarkets nationwide.

“We started on a shoestring, with an idea that seemed right to us because babies needed healthy organic food that was

of-the-art baby food factory. “The road to getting their product into the marketplace was not an easy one, but Earth’s Best Baby Foods became a national brand, which was acquired first by Heinz Foods and then

by Hain-Celestial Group, who owns it today,” said Koss. Today, Earth’s Best Baby Food can be found in all supermarkets and most natural food stores in Hawaii and across the United States.

During the 1990s, both brothers moved to Maui with their wives and children, but Ron and his family returned to Vermont, where he lives today. The brothers detailed their experiences and challenges in starting Earth’s Best Baby Food in their 2010 book, The Earth’s Best Story, available on Amazon.

The brothers have since worked together on a variety of projects, including sustainably sourced wood and a healthy ice cream made with organic milk, probiotics, protein and antioxidants. Arnie Koss is a regular guest speaker at the Maui Food Innovations Center at the University of Hawaii Maui College.

“The organic and natural products industry was built on dreamers; it still needs dreamers who have the drive to innovate,” said Koss in his remarks at the Hall of Legends ceremony. “Who could have guessed back in the 1980s that organic and natural foods would become such a huge part of the food industry? Ron and I are proud to be part of the launch of something that helped to change the world in a positive way.”

At the time, there were only the Big Three brands: Heinz, Gerber and Beech-Nut. Koss said no one was even talking about organic baby food. “Ron and I were pioneers who participated in the lengthy process to establish certification standards for organic and advocate for the official USDA designation of organic food that’s in use today,” he said.

The brothers spent three years toiling on their idea, working in a tiny one-room attic office in Burlington, Vermont and eventually raising the capital to build a state-

News Of The Weird WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING As the medal ceremony for the men’s 1,000-meter speed-skating competition concluded on Feb. 23 at the Gangneung Oval in Pyeongchang, South Korea, “serial streaker” Mark Roberts, 55, of Liverpool, England, jumped the wall and took to the ice. Roberts peeled off his tracksuit to reveal a pink tutu, a “penis pouch” with a monkey face on it, and “Peace + Love” scrawled on his torso.

Although he might have lost points for an initial fall, he jumped up and continued performing a dance routine. Metro News recounts that Roberts has streaked at Wimbledon, the French Open and soccer matches, along with dog shows and other large events. He “retired” in 2013, saying “gravity’s against me,” but apparently he couldn’t resist the global exposure of the Olympics.

As the 2018 Winter Olympics got underway, and athletes from Russia were forced to compete under the Olympic flag and be designated as “Olympic Athletes from Russia” (OAR) as punishment for systemic doping at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russian bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva proudly wore a T-shirt that read “I Don’t Do Doping.” But on Feb. 23, Sergeeva became the second Russian athlete to fail a doping test. (Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky also failed a drug test earlier in the Games.) Sergeeva was a vocal critic of the Olympic policy toward Russian athletes, telling Yahoo Sports, “If we are here, and we are clean, we should be able to walk under our flag.”

District Judge Joseph Boeckmann, 72, took a personal interest in the young men who came through his courtrooms in Cross and St. Francis counties (Arkansas) from 2009 to 2015 with traffic citations or misdemeanor criminal charges. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that Judge Boeckmann routinely dismissed those charges pending “community service,” which Boeckmann would set up through private phone calls with the men, assigning them to provide sexual favors or allow Judge Boeckmann to take pictures of them in “embarrassing positions; positions that he found sexually gratifying,” a court document revealed. Boeckmann, of Wynne, Arkansas, admitted to the charges in October and was sentenced Feb. 21 to five years in prison.

Prosecutors had agreed to a lesser sentence in light of Boeckmann’s age, but U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker ordered the maximum sentence, saying, “[H]e acted corruptly while serving as a judge. That sets his crime apart.”

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Washington State University senior Logan Tago, a football linebacker, received WSU’s Center for Civic Engagement Fall 2017 Community Involvement award on Feb. 1 for 240 hours of service to the local community, reported the WSU Daily Evergreen–service he was ordered to give as a stipulation of his

sentencing in January 2017 for third-degree assault. In June 2016, The Seattle Times reported, Tago allegedly hit a man with a sixpack of beer and later agreed to a plea deal that called for 30 days in the Whitman County jail, $800 in fines–and exactly 240 hours of community service. Tago managed to play the final two games of the 2016 season and in all of 2017’s 13 games, despite a WSU athletic department policy that prohibits players who are facing a felony charge from playing.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS On Feb. 9, the Texas 3rd Court of Appeals upheld the four-year prison sentence Ralph Alfred Friesenhahn, 65, of San Antonio received after his fourth DWI conviction in 2016, rejecting arguments from his lawyer, Gina Jones of New Braunfels, that the state’s legal limit for alcohol concentration discriminates against alcoholics, who have a higher tolerance for liquor. “You’re not being punished for being an alcoholic,” Sammy McCrary, chief of the felony division for the Comal County criminal district attorney’s office told the Austin American-Statesman. “It’s the driving that’s the problem.”

SPECIAL DELIVERY At the beginning of February, several residents along a block in Marina, California, were hit by mail thieves. But the criminals probably didn’t know what hit them when they stole Rosalinda Vizina’s package. SFGate.com reported that Vizina, an entomologist, had ordered 500 live cockroaches for a study she’s working on. “I feel a little bad for the roaches in case they got smushed or tossed or something like that,” Vizina told KSBW. “For the thieves, I hope they went everywhere,” she added.

TMI? On Feb. 20, little Jameson Proctor was born in St. Louis and a radio audience listened in as he came into the world. Cassiday Proctor, co-host of the “Spencer’s Neighborhood” show on The Arch in St. Louis, scheduled her C-section right in the middle of drive time and then invited listeners to share the moment when Jameson was born, at 7:45 a.m., through a broadcast phone call. “Our radio show is all about sharing our personal lives,” Proctor, 33, told The Telegraph. She also solicited ideas for names from her fans and received more than 400 submissions. “It was not something I wanted to keep private,” Proctor said.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE A designer pop-up store in Seattle made news on Feb. 22 for one particular item: a clear plastic, drawstring shopping bag that sells for–wait for it–$590. United Press International reported the bag was first seen on Paris runways in January and sports the Celine Paris label along with warnings in several languages about the suffocation risk posed to babies. ■

‘Under Our Care’

We talk story with Tapani Vuori about the Maui Ocean Center’s 20th anniversary.

T

his month, the Maui Ocean Center celebrates its 20th anniversary. The aquarium, one of the largest in Hawaii, opened its doors in March 1998. Since then it’s steadily grown, though these days it seems to be changing–and expanding–faster than ever.

Tapani Vuori, originally from Finland, took over as General Manager of the Maui Ocean Center in 2015. He’s worked at the Ocean Center since 2002, when he was Director of Retail (he also spent a year since then working at the Pacific Whale Foundation). Though he spoke a great deal during our chat about marine ecosystems, his education is not in biology–he holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, which he earned at UCLA in 1987.

Rather than simply sit in his office and answer questions, Vuori agreed to chat while walking me around the Ocean Center. We talked about the good the aquarium has done, the not-so-good and the role it can play at a time when marine life around the world faces considerable threats.

Vuori talked a lot during our trip through the Ocean Center about the need to “stop the commercialization of natural resources.” This may seem a bit odd for a guy who runs an aquarium that charges admission, but it’s not entirely hypocritical. Indeed, Vuori repeatedly used the word “hypocritical” in our discussions on the Ocean Center’s actions, past, present and future. And he took pains to make clear that he understands the Ocean Center’s considerable responsibilities to the com-

munity, and the ocean life it celebrates.

Vuori said that Kahu Dane Maxwell blesses all the animals at the center (his grandfather, Charlie Maxwell, blessed the Maui Ocean Center when it first opened). Guests requesting recorded audio tours now have the option of listening to them in Hawaiian, and the center recently conducted an educational tour entirely in Hawaiian.

Trash cans throughout the center are made of repurposed shipping pallets. Vuori also said–knowing that his own beverage people would be displeased–the center is adding water fountains and encouraging people to bring their own water bottles, instead of purchasing plastic bottles of water at the snack bars (which are still for sale).

“This is all under our care,” Vuori told me as we walked into the center. “This is very important–we don’t own it. It’s all under our care. And up to 80 percent of the life here, we return to the ocean.”

We were in the Surge Zone, one of the first exhibits most people see when entering the park, when Vuori began talking about limu, the algae that’s considered a delicacy in Hawai‘i. “There used to be 200 different species of limu,” he said. “Now there are 11. I said, ‘let’s do a limu exhibit.”

This was a common refrain during our talk. Vuori radiates energy about marine life, and the part the Ocean Center can play in educating the public about the myriad threats it faces–coral bleaching, acidification, pollution, ocean warming, extinctions and so on. Sometimes, he

found himself second-guessing the way he was articulating his priorities. Inside the Living Reef exhibit, Vuori said, “Sediment is the number one threat to marine ecosystems.” Then he quickly asked me to understand that he didn’t mean that he doesn’t think sunscreen is a problem.

“We stopped selling sunscreen four years ago,” he said. “We recommend that people going to the beach wear long sleeves and hats. But if you have to use sunscreen, we say that they should use a mineral-based type–like zinc oxide–and use it minimally.

Then wash it off at home.”

Of course, washing it off at home is better (hopefully) because it means sunscreen residue will go into a wastewater treatment facility before flowing into the ocean. To cover all its bases, Vuori said the Ocean Center is also working with the county’s storm drain stenciling program, to make sure people understand not to dump anything in the drains, which empty directly into the ocean.

“What is the carrying capacity for the tourist industry in Hawaii?” Vuori then asked me. “This is the conversation we need to have.”

He repeatedly mentioned the island nation of Palau, holding up its celebrated refocusing on on eco-tourism as a model of where he believes Maui needs to go.

“They created a paradigm shift on Palau,” Vuori said. “And I mention this because it is considered a Third World country. If a Third World country can do this, why can’t we? We want to be part of that–we are part of the community.”

Though most visitors to the Ocean

Center seem to gravitate to its giant shark tank–and the tunnel that gives people 240-degree views of the animals inside the tank–Vuori said the most important animals in the center are the corals.

“We put 1.2 million gallons of sea water into the park every day,” he said. It’s an open system, using salt water. “It’s a fairly rare setup we have here, but it allows us to have healthy coral colonies here. We have one of the largest displays of live endemic corals.

Most of what we collect are living rock.”

Vuori knows that the term “living rock” is a popular misnomer, and back-tracked his comment almost instantly after saying it. “Of course, coral is not a rock,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful, live animal.” The Ocean Center plans to develop an exhibit where viewers will be able to watch microscopic images of coral actually eating.

Because of the Ocean Center’s design, the coral on display are subject to the same ocean heating that’s leading to bleaching throughout the world. To combat this, Vuori said, they installed a chiller at the Ocean Center, which cooled the exhibit waters and slowed the bleaching.

Vuori said that when he came on as general manager in 2015, the Ocean Center was having “effluent issues” (this was one of a number of times during our chat when Vuori wondered out loud if he should say something that he had already started to say, only to nod and continue, adding that it was important that the Ocean Center remain transparent and accountable). He said that these issues help spur the hiring of an environmental director.

“You didn’t have an environmental director before then?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “In fact, we hired two environmental directors. They did a comprehensive chemical analysis of all the water.

We basically cleaned house.”

According to Vuori, the results have been impressive. In fact, he said, they recently completed a scientific study on water quality in Ma‘alaea Harbor. The results show that the water in the harbor is actually cleaner now because of the Ocean Center.

“It would create smell and algae issues if we stopped [operating],” Vuori said.

It’s great news, but there’s bad news on the horizon. The Maui Ocean Center operates under a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and in 2020 the allowed discharge levels will become more stringent. Vuori said the Ocean Center is currently under the interim levels, but something will have to change to meet the new, lower targets. Vuori said he’s gone to the state Department of Health (DOH) Clean Water Branch in hopes of offering solutions.

“They told us to write a watershed plan, get stakeholders together and they would get us money,” he said. Of course, with the EPA basically getting slashed by the Trump Administration, it’s hard to say what will happen by 2020. Still, something has to be done.

“There have to be government/private collaboration efforts,” he said. “The issues are bigger than the Maui Ocean Center.”

Just outside the Wet Lab is a large home aquarium tank filled with old fishing line, spider weights and other junk. It was all pulled from the ocean near the Ocean Center, and it all represents a threat to the marine ecosystem.

“Will this be part of a future exhibit?” I ask Vuori as we walk by.

“We’re working on it,” he said. They’re trying to figure out how to display it at the very end of the new Papahanaumokuakea exhibit–which sits at the end of the Ocean Center’s famous underwater tunnel through the shark tank–so that you have to walk through it to exit the center.

The Ocean Center is also working on a future exhibit on Kaho‘olawe. Or rather, they’re going to display a former Kaho‘olawe exhibit that once sat in the

Smithsonian Institution, but has been gathering dust in a Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) warehouse for the past decade. The exhibit would go into the part of the Center that currently houses the dolphin and whale exhibits (those will eventually move to the new 139-seat Dome Theater that’s currently under construction).

In any case, the whale exhibit itself is mostly dated–Vuori said he constantly sees kids putting their hands on the big view screens, expecting them to be just as interactive as virtually every other screen in their lives.

Vuori said that, once completed, the Dome Theater will allow those inside to see exactly what it would be like to be in the ocean with humpback whales. “It will become a landmark on Maui,” he said. He added that the theater will also include a door that leads directly to the parking lot, allowing community groups to use the theater without having to go through the rest of the Ocean Center.

Vuori also talked to me of other future plans, including a floating dock in Ma‘alaea Harbor that could accommodate the Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani voyaging canoe.

“I believe the State of Hawaii should have an allocation of harbor slips,” Vuori said. “If you have 50, then maybe one should be for cultural uses. It would create more of a sense of community.”

There are many dozens of exhibits and displays at the Ocean Center, but Vuori only paused in front of one and said he was proud of it. That was surprising, because the thing he wanted to highlight was a sign explaining to guests why there aren’t any dolphins at the Maui Ocean Center (among other reasons, a 2002 Maui County law forbids it).

“I wanted this sign,” Vuori told me.

“When this went up, I started seeing our Trip Advisor reviews going up. Millennials are the generation that pays attention to things like this. Change is possible when this happens. It is our moral obligation to talk about these issues. Most people hunger for this. We were in the very dark Mid Reef exhibit when I asked Vuori why aquariums are needed. After a brief pause, he motioned me towards one of the walls.

There, he started talking about the work of Rene Umberger, an environmentalist who founded For the Fishes, an organization that seeks to protect coral reefs and opposes the aquarium industry. Umberger made headlines in 2014 when, while filming damage to a reef off Kona, a diver collecting reef fish attacked her.

“We support the efforts of Rene Umberger,” Vuori. “Does this make us hypocrites? I don’t think so.” He then repeated his earlier statement that the Center returns about 80 percent of the life in its exhibits to the ocean.

Reached by phone a few days later, Umberger heaped lavish praise on Vuori. “I’ve seen a 180-degree turn since Tapani took over,” she told me. “They’re doing such good work. They’ve gone from not caring so much about the marine life they’ve captured to now wanting to reduce the numbers of animals they take from the wild. It’s really surprising, and really awesome.”

Umberger, who said that most aquariums around the world “have a terrible track record” in terms of taking fish and disturbing delicate eco-systems, holds Vuori and the Maui Ocean Center as “a model” of how the industry should now operate. “Given what’s happening to coral reefs worldwide, they have to do it,” Umberger said.

Back at the Ocean Center, Vuori gave a few more reasons to justify its work.

It does a lot of marine education (“we should not monetize education,” he said).

What’s more, he said the majority of people around Hawaii (and the world) don’t dive on reefs.

“If people don’t see the beauty of the ocean, how can expect them to care?”

Vuori said.

For Vuori, aquariums like the Ocean Center represent a way for people to see ocean life up close, without damaging the marine ecosystem through aquarium collecting.

“Before we rush into pet stores, let’s have a conversation. Maybe there’s a better way to enjoy marine life.”

“We have made a public commitment: By 2020, 20 percent of our supply will come from sustainable sources.” Indeed, the Ocean Center is already working with UH Hilo and the Oceanic Institute on Oahu on aquaculture.

Located just outside the Ocean Center’s facilities that are open to the public, sits the Wet Lab. There, Head Curator John Gorman tends to a variety of tanks.

“There are 60 million tropical marine fish coming into the U.S. every year, primarily for home aquariums,” he said. “Forty percent of the fish were caught using cyanide.”

Basically, cyanide fishing works like this: someone snorkels down to the reef, sprays an area with cyanide using a squirt bottle, then scoops up the stunned fish with a hand net. “The practice began in the 1960s in the Philippines as a way to capture live reef fish

for sale primarily to European and North American aquarium owners—a market now worth some $200 million a year,” according to Scientific American magazine.

Gorman said this causes three major problems. First, it damages the coral itself.

Second, “for every fish that makes it to market, two don’t,” he said. And third, there are trace elements of cyanide left in the fish that eventually are sold to the public.

“Rene came to us,” Gorman said. “We’re doing an exhibit on this because visitors to aquariums are perhaps programmed to having an aquarium.”

“Does this make us hypocrites?” Vuori then asked Gorman.

“It could, yes,” Gorman said. “But we have to address this with an open mind.

We believe there are solutions.”

For instance, Gorman said those wanting a home aquarium would do better by investing in fresh water fish, as opposed to salt water fish. Gorman also said that captive-bred fish are also part of the solution.

Gorman then walked me over to a tank filled with Yellow Tang. They were bred in captivity with the help of the Oceanic Institute on Oahu. It’s a complex procedure, requiring a wide variety of different types of plankton, but it is doable.

“We are not operating from a place of fear,” Vuori said. “We need to be engaged with the community. And we expect the community to hold us responsible.”

Taverna will celebrate its second anniversary with food from a variety of local food and live entertainment. The event will also benefit the Maui Culinary Academy.

Guests at the event can expect great food. Chef Gary Johnson of Hana Ranch and Courtney Glarita of Honu Seafood will be among the seven chefs serving the fare. 'The Strangers: Prey At Night' This horror movie proves that not every picture needs a sequel ★★★★★ Rated R / 85 Min.

en years later, somebody finally made a sequel to the horror hit The Strangers and proved that, once again, some movies absolutely do not need a sequel. Here, a family of four (led by Mad Men star Christina Hendricks and Martin Henderson, the lead in the Ice Cube-led fiasco Torque) go on a road trip in an effort to bond (they really should have gone to Wally World). They wind up staying in a spooky trailer park inhabited by killers. The trio of villains are identified in the credits by the disguises they adorn (Man in the Mask, Dollface and Pin-Up Girl) and are quick to stalk, scare and stab their victims.

An update from the prior films is that the menacing creeps now like to blast bad ‘80s pop ballads during their killing spree.

It’s a touch that doesn’t work. Note to the filmmakers: nothing sucks the suspense out of your chase scene than having Air Supply playing over the soundtrack. Another scene takes place partially underwater, which made me grateful that I didn’t have to hear Total Eclipse of the Heart in its entirety.

It all leads up to a stupid final scene that

can’t seem to decide if it wants to conclude with a sequel set-up or a fake-out scare, then ultimately chooses neither and just fades to the end credits. While the original left me shaking, this sequel gave me the sinking feeling that I should have watched A Wrinkle in Time.

Why are the killers doing their dirty deeds, done dirt cheap? Perhaps they’re a bunch of 80’s-lovin’ Gen-X-er’s who hate Millennials, which is why the film’s first real victims are a pile of cell phones. Is there anything scarier to the film’s target audience than not having their phones? Maybe these creeps hate teens who shop at Hot Topic and can’t appreciate the likes of A Flock of Seagulls? It would explain a lot of this movie.

I tend to go easy on the inept behavior of characters during these films and forgive them for making bad decisions. Look, until you’ve been chased by a psychopath wearing a mask and carrying a large cutting tool, you can’t claim that you’d act rationally, either.

When people do things in these movies like hide in closets or hide in parked cars, I genuinely sympathize. On the other hand, the people in this movie behave like such morons that I wondered if they were being targeted because of their lack of peripheral vision.

True horror: when you lock your keys inside the car

Bertino’s 2008 The Strangers is that it set up its simple premise perfectly (affectionate couple checks into log cabin and has their romantic getaway interrupted by murderous bullies) and piled on real terror. I cared very much for the leads (played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) and their night-long stand against the killers consisted entirely of suspense and suggestion. Until the ending, that is, which always felt tacked-on. That lousy ending keeps The Strangers at near-great status.

The sequel, on the other hand, has virtually nothing to recommend it. While the atmospheric setting is eerily lit, there’s no

sense of geography; the location is as random as the attacks. There’s lots of jump scares but little to really get worked up about. The villains are much scarier in the shadows than in plain sight and no one in the cast really stands out (except for Zeke the dog, who seems really scared).

Horror fans are in for a rough year: since It made a fortune in 2017, it only means studios are now rushing to push the next potential scary blockbuster out there. For every one breakout genre classic, there will be dozens of movies like this one to remind us how bad a horror movie can be. ■

Imagine your solution was to simply remove clocks from the area they’re waiting in, so people somehow won’t notice how long they’ve been waiting. I hope I don’t need to point out how useless and impractical such a solution is, compared to somehow making their wait either shorter or more entertaining. Removing clocks wouldn’t solve a thing. Unfortunately, that is something akin to the slapdash solution you’ve applied to a current problem you’ve been having. Time to rethink and apply a real solution before someone (else) calls you out.

You’ve heard this before but it bears repeating: you reap what you sow. You’re acting like a gardener who goes out to their vegetable patch, then acts surprised that what’s come up is corn, carrots, and tomatoes, instead of peas, okra, and broccoli. Unless they’re especially clueless or someone played a cruel, elaborate joke on them, the plants that grew are the ones whose seeds they planted, so they have no right to complain.

To be fair, you might be upset because only corn and tomatoes grew, when you also planted, right next to them, seeds for cauliflower and potatoes. Maybe you put the seeds in the wrong place, or in the wrong kind of soil, or gave them too much or too little water. Shit happens. Move on, and eat your vegetables, instead of complaining about the ones that aren’t there.

Most things look better with some wear, from books to clothes to buildings. People do, too. Sure, you don’t necessarily want someone who’s worn out, but a few scars and scratches, evidence of having lived, can be incredibly hot. You’ve lived, and survived some pretty rough patches. That’s sexy, which is why I’m confounded whenever you try to hide that and appear more innocent or less battle-scarred than you are. Flaunt it baby.
