Mayor Alan Arakawa wants to move homeless people to Old Maui High, but there’s no actual plan to do it

ayor Alan Arakawa made some news last week with his announcement during his State of the County address that he wants to move Maui’s homeless population—at last count numbering 800-plus—to the Old Maui High School Hamakuapoko campus outside Paia.

Of course, this should come as no surprise to MauiTime readers. Last year, after the TEACH organization failed in its attempt to win a 60-year, $1 per year lease to take over the same campus, we quoted mayoral spokesman Rod Antone making the same suggestion (see “Did the County of Maui learn anything from TEACH’s failure,” Apr. 5, 2017).

At the time it seemed a flippant and rather cruel joke. After all, the 23-acre site has no water or sewer, and the buildings there are crumbling. But as the mayor explained it in his speech, the “Project Aloha” plan will move “the homeless, former [prison] inmates and the disadvantaged” to “an area of lesser impact to the rest of the community.”

To accomplish this, the mayor wants to lease the campus to a local nonprofit group, Tri-Isle Resource Conservation & Development, and “a coalition of community partners.” MauiTime caught up with Tri-Isle executive director John Tomoso this week and found the former social worker and recently ordained Episcopal priest long on enthusiasm, but rather short on details about this massive undertaking. Here are some excerpts from the conversation:

MAUITIME: The mayor’s plan is to move the island’s homeless to Old Maui High School— JOHN TOMASO: Not all of them!

I’m not going to move all of them! I mean, you’re talking about hundreds of people. We can’t move everybody up there! We can’t service all the hundreds, noooo! There’s no way!

MT: The mayor said he wants them moved to an area of “lesser impact” to the community.

JT: Well, that’s not my idea. Those are his words. But I grew up here; most of my cousins went to Maui High. It’s not that isolated. Back when I grew up, there were only 30,000 people on Maui and everybody knew where to go and nothing was isolated. But in modern time, I don’t think that kind of isolation should be any problem to any service organization because the connectivity both physically and virtually it is there.

Because Maui is a small place.

MT: What is your plan?

JT: Oh my gosh, we have months of work; we’re starting from zero. Right now, at this point, I don’t have a plan on paper. We [Tri-Isle] just joined the Maui Homeless Alliance because we were wanting to do something—especially with Old Maui High School.

MT: But the mayor said he wants to send a proposal to the County Council in two weeks for your organization to lease the

site. When TEACH came before the council it had a 157-page proposal in hand.

JT: I don’t have a proposal, I have snippets of it–maybe 12 pages. Even a couple of napkins that I still have to transcribe [giggles]. This is a work in progress and if it’s 20 people or 200 people [living on the campus], that’s what we’re going to work towards. We’re going to give it more than our best social work-community development shot. Starting Monday, we’re going to put pen to paper. We just came up with the name “Project Aloha.” Okay, so it sounds like I’m a fly-by-night, I know. I’m going to tell the Council what I’m telling you. I mean, I can’t lie. Is there a plan? Somewhat, but not on paper. I don’t have—in the Western

MT: How much time will you need to develop a plan?

JT: I don’t know. That’s my stock-intrade answer right now.

JT: We have to come up with a coalition and a partnering with many people other than ourselves. The main reason we’re interested in the campus is because of this agricultural land up there that can be used for training and mentoring. You know, there’s tons of land that can be used as a mentorship, as a training, as a rehabilitator for ‘aina kind of relationships. I don’t even know if we want to take over the high school buildings. That’s a big campus.

MT: But there’s no place for anyone to live; there’s no water or sewer.

JT: Well, then we’ll have to build units up there. That’s how big this plan is—you can’t just put people up in tents. Maybe rehabilitate a classroom to start as a dorm. We’ll use grants. We’ll need grants, lots of public and private grants. I love grantsmanship. It’s housing first, then you surround people with services and I use “surround” in quotations because I realize even to get out to Paia by bus it takes a while, but then this is beyond Paia.

MT: How did your involvement come about?

MT: And Holomua Road [which leads to the campus] isn’t paved the whole way.

JT: Oh, I’ve been meeting with the mayor for over a year.

JT: Yes it is.

MT: But you haven’t put a hard proposal in front of him?

JT: Are you going to quote me on this?

MT: Yes. JT: Then I’m not going to answer [giggles]. I haven’t been talking to the mayor for a year; maybe we started talking last summer. I’ve had a bunch of meetings with the mayor. But I haven’t been in a meeting with him by himself; it’s been with other parties who are concerned about the underserved populations.

MT: What do you think this project will cost?

JT: Oh, I don’t know. I sound stupid, I know. I don’t know. We can’t do it without government at all levels. We need public sector money, your tax money. There has to be some public sector involvement in the funding.

JT: Well it used to be. It was beautiful.

MT: Part of the problem with TEACH’s proposal was increased traffic through Paia.

JT: I know that traffic, my grandchildren live in Haiku. When I [drive through] Paia I think “Oh my God, I’m glad I don’t live here.” We need to engage the community.

MT: If the Council doesn’t want to give you a lease, would you do Project Aloha in some other location?

JT: Oh yes, because I’m committed to it.

But I see this Old Maui High campus that used to be this beautiful place [starts to cry] and now it hurts me to go in there.

While it’s nice to know that the store will remain open on Maui–a reality that just a few months ago seemed impossible–it’s sad to see the store’s famous book posters stacked near the back (Disclosure: I shelled out $30 cash for their Walden poster).

Their official move-date is Sunday, Mar. 11, and because the new location is the old Petco at the Maui Marketplace, the new store will be somewhat smaller. Company officials say the move is “temporary,” but as to how long they’ll be there, no one can say.

Then again, the whole Barnes & Noble chain is getting smaller. Business may have been good at the Lahaina store, but across the country, holiday sales in 2017 weren’t that great. Because there was a 6.4 percent decline in sales during the last two months of 2017, according to a Feb. 25 story in Forbes, the company has decided to

In December 2017, the Hawai‘i Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission released a monster 304-page report. The title tells you all you need to know about its importance: “Hawai‘i Sea Level Rise Vulnerability and Adaptation Report.” It pulls no punches about the dire threat that faces Hawai‘i, and the rest of the world. “[R]apid warming of the atmosphere and oceans, caused by two centuries of unabated carbon emissions, is causing increasing rates of sea level rise, unprecedented in human history, that threatens natural environments and development on low-lying coasts,” states the report. “Sea level rise is an inevitable outcome of global warming that will continue through many centuries even if human-generated global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were stopped today. However, much of what happens with future sea level rise will depend on our ability, or inability, to implement aggressive global carbon emissions reduction programs envisioned through the 2016 Paris Climate Accord.”

On Mar. 2, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa signed a proclamation officially accepting that report. “The Proclamation acknowledges that climate change is real and directs ‘County departments to use the Report in their plans, programs and capital improvement decisions, to mitigate impacts to infrastructure and critical facilities triggered by sea level rise,’” states a Mar. 2 County news release. “It also calls on the Planning Department to propose rule changes to the Maui, Molokai and Lanai Planning Commissions to include sea level rise in their shoreline setback calculations.”

This is a big deal, and frankly, should have been done a decade ago. Then again, the whole U.S. response to climate change– especially his corrupt majesty Donald Trump festering in the White House–has been tardy and pathetic.

“We appreciate the leadership that the Mayor has shown in issuing the Proclamation and in supporting changes to the shoreline setback formula,” said Deputy Planning Director Michele McLean in the Mar. 2 news release. “For years we have been asking, begging

We will ask our three planning commissions to amend their shoreline rules to include sea level rise in their shoreline setback calculations to further protect shoreline development from coastal hazards.”

Titled “Billy Graham’s legacy is the evangelical pursuit of politics instead of Jesus,” Greer offered a thoughtful but harsh assessment of Graham’s true achievements.

The 99-year-old evangelical preacher died on Feb. 21, and Governor David Ige–acting “at the direction of the President of the United States,” according to a Mar. 1 statement from his office–ordered the tribute to Graham at all State of Hawai‘i agencies and offices “as a mark of respect for the memory of Reverend Billy Graham.”

Spare me. Graham may have been popular with American evangelicals, but he was also a polarizing, extremely political figure who articulated very strong views against homosexuality.

We traffic in homosexuality at the peril of our spiritual welfare,” Graham told to a young woman who wrote to him in 1974, saying that she was in love with another woman, according to John Paul Brammer’s Feb. 22 NBC News story “Billy Graham leaves a painful legacy for LGBTQ people.”

The #MeToo movement is inspiring change in the State of Hawaii. The State Commission on the Status of Women is now offering a first-of-its-kind #MeToo Prevention Training. The one-hour instruction session is free and available by request by any public or private organization, workplace or classroom.

Typical sexual harassment training programs in Hawaii and nationally focus on legal frameworks and solutions that rely on criminalization or civil sanctions.

Many mandatory sexual harassment trainings are also often held online or in a depersonalized setting.

The #MeToo Prevention Training will provide a new model by targeting the cultural conditions that make sexual harassment likely to occur in the workplace.

The prevention training curriculum includes discussion of the American gender system, examination of our collective participation in the normalization of sexism, and concrete strategies to change an organization’s culture to a more inclusive, safe environment for all women.

“Thanks to the #MeToo movement there is now a recognition of the systemic character of men’s abuse of power in the work-

place,” said Khara Jabola Carolus, the executive director of the State Commission on the Status of Women, in a Mar. 2 news release. “Everyone knows that sexism, and sexual harassment and violence, are part of everyday life for the majority of women. It’s time for a collective response.

“Sexual harassment is one form of something bigger happening against women,” Jabola continued. “We need trainings that have a level of social awareness and discussion.” She added that sometimes law isn’t the answer. “We have underestimated the power of institutionalized practices and unspoken social norms on the status of women. Culture should teach respect for women and not tolerate sexism, regardless of whether that sexism is legal or illegal.”

Another goal of the #MeToo prevention training, which was inspired by local community activism, is to make sure individual women don’t risk their jobs and their family’s economic security when they speak up about sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and violence.

“Training isn’t a magic bullet but it opens a difficult conversation on the treatment of women in a safe, inclusive way,” said Jabola. “Hopefully, it will spark other ideas and engage even more people to join the work of co-creating a new culture where women are treated as humans.”

College students who are interested in careers in natural resources, conservation and/or the National Park Service have until March 31 to submit an application for Haleakala National Park’s ‘Imi i ka Lama Collegiate Internship Program.

‘Imi i ka Lama is an eight week summer internship program for college-age students who would like to pursue careers in fields related to the National Park Service.

Six positions will be available in the areas of Endangered Wildlife Management, Cultural Resource Management, Facilities Management, Interpretation, Team Leader and Visitor/Resources Protection.

Students interested in these fields or in education, Hawaiian studies, or tourism careers are encouraged to apply. The official deadline is Saturday, Mar. 31, 2018. All applications and required documents must be received by 4pm to be considered.

Applicants will be selected through an application, background check, and interview process.

Interns will earn a living allowance of $200 per week and the Team Leader will earn $400 per week.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,230 that may be applied towards higher education costs or student loans.

Applicants must be available full-time from June 11, 2018 through Aug. 3, 2018, 7:30am-4pm, not including travel time. Free transportation is provided from designated pick up sites in Central Maui and Upcountry. Neighbor island residents are encouraged to apply, however they must seek their own accommodations.

Some key components of the winning design include the flowing design and cool color tone reflecting the ocean, with the warmer red and orange colors displaying the sunrise and sunset. The darker panels represent the night before the start of a new day. News Of The Weird WAIT WHAT Police in Mainz, Germany, responded to an apartment building after cries were heard from within one unit early on Feb. 17, The Associated Press reported. When they arrived, officers found two men, the 58-year-old tenant and a 61-yearold visitor, “hopelessly locked up” with a mannequin dressed as a knight and a large remotecontrolled car. The men were too drunk to explain how they had become entangled, and one officer remarked that “the whole thing would have remained a funny episode” if the younger man had not become “more than impolite.” He now faces a charge of insulting officers.

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Metro News reported on Feb. 20 that travelers “remained silent” for 20 minutes while a fellow passenger on a Ural Airlines flight from Antalya, Turkey, to Moscow used the air vent above her seat to dry a pair of underwear. Witnesses reported that the woman showed no shame and that “everybody was looking with interest and confusion.” Debate raged later, however, after video of the woman was posted online, with one commenter speculating that “maybe the takeoff was sort of extreme, so now she has to dry those.”

Shanghai police posted a video on social media of two men trying to break into a business on Feb. 14 by using bricks to shatter the glass storefront. But as United Press International reported, when Suspect A’s brick bounced off the glass, he bent to retrieve it and ended up squarely in the path of Suspect B’s brick, which struck him in the head and apparently knocked him out. In the video, Suspect B can be seen dragging Suspect A away from the store. Police remarked: “If all burglars were like this, we wouldn’t need to work overtime.”

Crestline, California, resident Claudia Ackley, 46, has teamed with “Discovering Bigfoot” filmmaker Todd Standing to sue the state of California, requesting on Jan. 18 that state agencies acknowledge the existence of a Sasquatch species.

Ackley and her daughters, 11 and 14, say they were hiking a trail at Lake Arrowhead in March 2017 when they spotted a large figure braced in a pine tree. “I ran into a Sasquatch–a Bigfoot. We were face to face,” Ackley told the San Bernardino Sun. Forest rangers insisted at the time that Ackley and her daughters had seen a bear, and Ackley fears that by not acknowledging the presence of the legendary creatures, the state is putting the public at risk. “People have to be warned about these things,” she said. “They are big.”

INEXPLICABLE Firefighter Constantinos “Danny” Filippidis, 49, from Toronto, was the subject of a weeklong search by more than 250 people using drones, dogs and helicopters starting Feb. 7, when he disappeared from Whiteface Mountain ski resort in New York’s Adirondacks. When he finally turned

But, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard, Filippidis couldn’t tell officers anything about how he had traveled across the country, other than he rode in a “big-rig-style truck” and “slept a lot.”

The truck dropped him off in downtown Sacramento, but he was unable to explain how he got to the airport. He was taken to an area hospital.

AWESOME! Staffers at a Bangor, Maine, daycare called Watch Me Shine were happy to receive Valentine’s cookies made by a parent–until those who ate them started to feel high. “Within 15 minutes, teachers were reporting they had concerns about those cookies,” Tiffany Nowicki, director of the center, told the Bangor Daily News. About 12 staff members felt the effects of the treats, which were confiscated by the police and are being tested. “If they find something that shouldn’t be in those cookies,” Nowicki said, “that’s a big problem and we’ll make sure it’s addressed.” The day care has instituted a new policy that no outside food can be brought in for the children or staff.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Donna Walker of Linthwaite, England, just wanted a nice night out to celebrate her 50th birthday; she wasn’t anticipating a trip to the emergency room. Walker, along with her husband, Carlton, 45, and their two sons, was waiting for takeout food at the Atlantis restaurant in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, early on Feb. 18 when a brawl broke out. The Walkers don’t know what started the fight, but Carlton told Metro News: “When the fight spilled out of the takeaway, I said to Donna to stay inside. When I turned round my wife was at the doorway being attacked and was covered in blood. My son was being strangled.” Donna sustained a 2-inch gash on her forehead and was bitten on the arm by the young woman who attacked her, calling for a tetanus shot and antibiotics. “I wiped my eye and saw all the blood,” Donna said. “I had no idea I had been struck.” Police were still looking for the attackers at press time.

WEIRD HISTORY Union College in Schenectady, New York, excitedly announced on Feb. 13 that a librarian flipping through the brown pages of a 1793 almanac found a real historical treasure: a lock of President George Washington’s hair. Librarian John Myers came upon an envelope with “Washington’s hair” written in script on it, and inside, tied with a thread, were several strands of grayish hair. Keith Beutler, associate professor of history at Missouri Baptist University and the author of a book called “Washington’s Hair,” told The New York Times that in Washington’s day, it was not uncommon to exchange locks of hair as remembrances. “Exchanging locks of hair were like the selfies of the day,” Beutler said. Experts are examining the almanac and its provenance to determine whether the hair likely belongs to our first president, but in the meantime, college officials are learning how to preserve it. ■

HERITAGE TOURISM WHY THE CONTINUED MISUSE OF HAWAIIAN CULTURE IS WRONG

nited States Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), along with two other Senators, recently introduced Senate Bill 2395. Known as the “Explore America Act of 2018,” the bill would expand so-called “cultural heritage tourism” in the U.S. According to Schatz, this bill will be a big help for many people in Hawai‘i.

“Every year, Hawai‘i sets new records

for tourism growth in our state, but for too many people, it doesn’t feel like that growth is helping small businesses, families, and young people who are looking to build a life in Hawai‘i,” said Senator Schatz in a Feb. 7 news release sent out by his office.“This bill is about returning control to the people who live in the places everyone else wants to visit.

It gives local communities the chance to

see more benefits from tourism, including better jobs, and it puts the story of Hawai‘i in the hands of our own residents. This is what international visitors and tourists are looking for–authentic experiences that tell a story and have a history. With this bill, we can strengthen what Hawai‘i has to offer, and make sure local people benefit along the way.”

The bill states that it will “authorize

the provision of technical assistance under the Preserve America Program and to direct the Secretary of the Interior to enter into partnerships with communities adjacent to units of the National Park System to leverage local cultural heritage tourism assets.” In truth, the phrase “leverage local cultural heritage tourism assets” is a huge problem for anyone with any historical understanding of Hawai‘i.

I’ve written previously on this subject.

“In Hawai‘i conservation and tourism go hand in hand to epistemologically and physically remove us from the aina,” I wrote in the 2009 Pacific Studies journal article “Land Agendas vis a vis a Makani Discourse.” “The backdrop for landscaping agendas in Hawai‘i also consisted of imagining Hawaiians along similar lines of consumerism and capitalism.”

While the relatively recent introduction of the term “heritage tourism” purports to make the “old” new again through representation of a better version of the old, these new “old” places are important to explore. Places like Lahaina were remade under the guise of “heritage tourism,” except that the history it purports to resurrect never actually occurred there to the degree that it is emphasized. The whole “whaling town” theme was largely created to sell hotel rooms in Ka‘anapali.

Ironically, it’s the need by government and tourism officials to sell the visitor experience as “authentic” that’s at the root of the fabrications.

In General—The Secretary shall, to the extent practicable, offer to enter into partnerships with gateway communities to leverage heritage tourism assets to strengthen local economies and create jobs in the gateway communities with the goal of establishing a standardized framework for partnerships throughout the System, including through (1) providing financial assistance to gateway communities to support outreach and promotional efforts; (2) providing technical assistance to gateway communities based on Service best practices in tourism development and visitor management, such as— (A) inventorying tourism resources in the gateway community; (B) identifying historic heritage and cultural resources; (C) engaging collaborative partners and stakeholders; (D) designing community outreach and participation strategies; (E) developing concept plans for trails, parks, historic resources, and natural areas; (F) developing sustainable tourism development frameworks for community planning; and (G) encouraging regional strategies for tourism development and promotion; and (3) assisting gateway communities in accessing additional Federal resources available to strengthen tourism assets and support economic development.

After years of highly non-sustainable tourism, promises to develop “sustainable tourism frameworks in community planning” will sound like a great idea.

But the overall tone is rather intrusive, especially with the goal of “establishing a standardized framework.”

This is like other state-sponsored practices that can only view culture through a lens darkened by bureaucracy: control the product to control the message. This legislation wants to make culture and tourism partners–as if the two could make a natural fit. The view here, that tourism saves culture, is actually what some will preach. The reality is that tourism usually tramples culture–Lahaina Town today is a perfect example–but there’s no money in recognizing that.

And who might make up one of these “gateway communities?” Do they include all communities next to national parks? U.S. National Parks are very diverse. There’s Pu‘uhonua o Hanaunau in Kona, Haleakala on Maui and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial on O’ahu.

How would a standardized approach fit the communities surrounding such different places? What if these communities are not “park ready” and don’t quite fit a seamless image of coming and going to and from the park experience?

Will this bill extend help in these communities, with such things as affordable

homes and funds toward schooling, to bring them up to whatever measurements are envisioned? In essence, will tourism give back to the communities it traverses through in real ways? Or is it simply an issue of being native enough?

Hawai‘i has a long and often conflicted history with conservation agendas, beginning with the Division of Forestry in 1903, to the broadening to the National Park System later. Today, Hawai‘i has the eleventh largest state-owned and natural reserve area in the U.S. The Bureau of Agriculture and Forestry began in 1892, a year before the illegal overthrow, and then grew rapidly to become the Division of Forestry. By the 1950s, the Territory of Hawaii set out to coordinate a Territorial Park System in order to “conserve and preserve valuable

The American consciousness fostered in places like Yosemite and Yellowstone, where indigenous tribes were often violently removed from the land for the creation of National Parks, was transferred to Hawai‘i. Ultimately in the U.S., “with the aid of national parks, the history of the conquest of humans was transformed to the conquest of nature,” Roderick Neumann wrote in his 2002 book Imposing Wilderness.

In 2016, Senator Schatz introduced the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience (NATIVE) Act. It passed both houses of Congress, and President Barack Obama signed it into law on Sept. 23, 2016. The goal of that act was to “Enhance and integrate native tourism, empower native communities, and expand unique cultural tourism opportunities in the United States.”

“There are the issues of nativeness and tourism,” I wrote in the Sept. 15 MauiTime article “The Case Against The NATIVE Act.” “Interesting that it is titled Sec. 5 Native American tourism and branding enhancement.’ Native Hawaiians fall under this section of Native American tourism–the crazy agenda to rewrite actual history. And also, we are not a brand and cannot be branded (Although it does say the cultures should fit within the national brand of the U.S.)! This section is almost too Disneylike to comment on.”

The NATIVE Act is like a cartoon of nativeness . It reinforces long-standing confusion around the word “native,” as associated with the “welfare discourse” introduced by the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, and away from Native Tenant understandings in the Hawaiian Kingdom. The NATIVE Act also encourages tourism in areas “too difficult to access or are unknown to domestic travelers and international tourists.”

In response to what can be construed as clear infringement on protected places, I remarked that the bill would promote “Every place and all parts of culture open to the possible destruction of mass consumerism. In essence, no place is sacred or worth protecting, every place is open for intrusion.”

And now it’s much worse. The whole phrase “Explore America” supposes that all people and places will be willing coparticipants in this exploration. If places are unsure of inclusion, then perhaps “providing financial assistance to gateway communities to support outreach and promotional efforts,” as the bill

notes, will ease the indecision.

To be honest, the term “gateway communities” was new to me when I first read the bill, so I had to look it up. It simply refers to any communities that are close to national parks. The bulk of this legislation suggests ways to partner with these “gateway communities:”

but rapidly disappearing historic sites, monuments, and scenic areas throughout Hawaii,” according to the Territorial Planning Office in 1959.

The office recognized that “open spaces” would help the newly forming tourism industry by providing unencumbered vistas. “Hawaii is fortunate in that it possesses not only many heiaus, historic monuments, and other cultural sites but she also possesses scenic areas which, in their natural unspoiled beauty, also represent a great potential economic resource as far as visitor satisfaction,” it stated in 1959.

In fact, a “Policy for Recreation” was written into Territorial law: “In these words by the President the recreation needs apply to the country as a whole and to Hawaii in particular are aptly expressed,” stated the policy. “The federal government recognizes its duty in this important field of public welfare by stressing recreational development through various federal agencies such as National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, etc.”

these environments, then promotes these same environments as spaces for travel and exploration. This in turn converts the surrounding populations into nothing more than “gateway communities” to something else–the National Park. In the process, we largely forget to question the reasons for the takeover and the ways in which it continues.

The “tourist gaze,” as described by sociologist John Urry, is fickle at best and destructive at worst. Ultimately, the commodification of culture is only good for those who make money from the consumption. Complicating the matter in Hawai‘i is the inconvenient political reality of U.S. occupation of Hawaiian Kingdom’s sovereign territory and nationality. Erasing the past takes dedicated and prolonged effort, and these latest attempts to make us forget historical reality by selling access to Hawaiian culture is only the latest act of this long performance. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

ennilin Alcain, the owner of the Cupcake Ladies Catering Company, is a sweet, bubbly person who’s enthusiastic about sharing her delicious creations. Her small company creates artisanal cupcakes that are as creative as they are delicious.

We met up with her at the Shops at Wailea farmers market during one of her cupcake tastings to sample her Ladies and talk story.

“People always think that we are the cupcake ladies, but the Ladies are actually the cupcakes,” she said. “They’re named for ladies who have influenced my life.”

Her Ladies cover a variety of tastes; the original nine feature flavors like the Karen, with lemon and Kula strawberries, the Kassie with peanut butter frosting and the Hannah, with Kahlua cream filling and a Maui Grown coffee bean garnish. There is also a “Uniquely Maui” tropical menu, with flavors of li hing mui, Haiku banana, coconut, lilikoi and guava flavors, and simple classics for simple tastes, such as carrot cake, red velvet, vanilla and chocolate.

The company’s most popular cupcake, the Maya, is named for Alcain’s daughter, who was also one of the motivating factors for starting the business. Six years ago, Alcain was working at a resort and getting home late, and as a new mom, wanted to find a way to spend more time at home with her baby girl. She started out baking for family and friends from home, and created a tower of cupcakes for her daughter’s first birthday party. “It took off from there,” says Alcain, as more and more people heard about and tasted her delicious cupcakes.

Alcain’s Hawaii baking roots run deep.

“My grandpa owned and operated a bakery on Oahu,” said Alcain. “My dad was a baker his whole life, and I always liked being in the kitchen. Baking just seemed natural.”

When she brought her Ladies to the Made in Maui festival, the word about her cupcakes was out. After the demand outgrew her small origins, Cupcake Ladies became a part of UH Maui College’s Food Innovation Center, a resource center for “Foodpreneurs” that aims to support local business and reduce dependence on imported food. Cupcake Ladies uses the commercial bakery there.

The Cupcake Ladies now cater weddings, corporate events and other events. They can also deliver a dozen cupcakes–“like a dozen roses!” said Alcain. “It’s delivered to wherever people want. We use local and organic ingredients when possible.”

We tried a few cupcakes, and they’re as good as they sound. The Maya is a chocolate cake with dulce de leche inside, vanilla buttercream and is topped with sprinkle of toffee bits and balsamic sea salt from Molokai. “I named it after her because it was my favorite,” Alcain said.

It was my favorite, too. It had a fantastic balance of dense with chocolate and light with buttercream. The taste reflected the careful ingredients, and the flavor of the toffee and balsamic salt really popped.

“I like the Mona,” said Alcain’s mother, who was helping her at the market the day we dropped by. The Mona has caramel cake, vanilla buttercream frosting and a balsamic Molokai Sea-salted caramel drizzle.

We also tried the Claire, a lavender cupcake with honey cream cheese frosting and made with Ali‘i Kula lavender. The flavors complement each other perfectly.

“It’s about quality ingredients and about the flavor,” said Alcain. The Ladies are also very beautifully presented. The company does not do custom decorating or special orders, which keeps the turn-around times quick and the focus on the sweet simplicity of their cupcakes. They can do adjustments to make them gluten-free, though Alcain stresses that their facility is not gluten-free.

They don’t currently do vegan orders.

Cupcakes Ladies does not have a retail spot, but orders can be placed through the company’s online “cupcake boutique” at Cupcakeladieshi.com.You can also find them at the Shops at Wailea farmers market pop-up shops, where cupcake enthusiasts can sample the wares and buy just a few cupcakes.

“We’re all about celebrating life’s special moments,” said Alcain. “That’s why I created this. If you don’t have cake, it’s not a celebration!” ■

The Universe and Goldawn Won HIP HOP HIPPIES WITH HEART

I

t’s 11pm when I get out of my car and start to wander, trying to find this rehearsal studio in the Kahului industrial area. It’s not where I usually find myself on a Thursday night, but I’m out to jam and hang out with Goldawn Won and his band, The Universe, who are rehearsing for their Mar. 10 show at Wai Bar.

I’m rescued from my aimless wandering by a friendly face, who turns out to be Chris Dack, the drummer. He greets me, we talk story and he eventually leads me up to their rehearsal studio.

Dack is a California native and Maui High graduate. He and the rest of The Universe are professional studio-recording musicians.

Along with Dack and Won, The Universe is comprised of lead guitarist Forrest Yashaharala, bassist Jonathan Cua and singer/lyricist Larue Mayo. This year, they were nominated for a Na Hoku Hanohano award, and though they applied in the reggae category, the judges put them in the R&B genre. This is a testament to their genredefying style.

Their rehearsal space is a former dance studio transformed into the type of after-hours spot you’d stumble upon in New York City at 2am. DJ Lij, who runs the Free Runnin’s shop below, is spinning heavy dub reggae on his Numark decks when I arrive. They welcome me in as they would a friend.

Soon after, Goldawn Won arrives, quiet and casual, and greets me like we haven’t seen each other in years. We just met. I realize that in this digital age, everyone is struggling to connect. Won is a reminder that music always helps people do that.

“We’re kind of hip hop hippies,” says Won. “If we were back in the fifties and

On Won’s YouTube channel, among his live performances and music videos–one of which is with Buju Banton–there are jam sessions with strangers, one of which takes place on a Greyhound bus to the music festival Reggae on the River. An island boy at heart, he’s got his ukulele in hand,

sixties, we’d be a jam band doing jazz, reggae, hip hop and rock. On our album, every song is a different genre.” Won says he drew inspiration from bands like Roots. Two years ago, the band got serious about rehearsing and performing, though all of the band have been serious about music for a long time.

“Fifteen years ago, we were like, how do we bring hiphop to Maui?” Won says. “We figured out that we have to be the ones we’re looking for.” That’s when they started inviting artists like Hieroglyphics and Beat Junkies to Maui.

“We always get the crowd involved,” says Won. Their show at Casanova on Feb. 24 featured DJ Lij and a crew of amazing hip hop lyricists. Especially Atlas, who started his set off with an amazing spoken word poem right in the middle of the dance floor. I’ve seldom seen that at any show on Maui.

Won was born in Honolulu and raised on Maui. He’s lived in Virginia, Maryland, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle. All his travels have influenced his sound, but his soul has always been in Hawaii. It is the undeniable source of his music.

Won is a serious hip hop lyricist

beat boxing, rhyming, singing and inspiring others around him to do the same. “What’s the point of pursuing this if I am not bringing my people up with me?” he says.

The roots music Universe produces is grounded and connected. The message is powerful and globally impactful because of the strong community it has created worldwide, much as hip hop has done. The Universe channels both genres to create music that is both universal and yet very Hawaii.

Goldawn Won and The Universe are everything good about Maui’s music scene–honest, open, versatile and real, with serious hustle and talent. Goldawn is a guy who has been around, and gone through enough to know what is important in music and life. “I want my mom to see that the Casio keyboard she bought me when I was a kid actually paid off,” says Won. 'Red Sparrow' The Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller is grim but has no audience ★★★★★ Rated R / 130 Min.

ennifer Lawrence stars as Dominika, a Russian Bolshoi Ballet dancer whose promising career is cut painfully short. An onstage injury redirects Dominika into a life of spying, as her uncle (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) enlists her in the Russian intelligencesponsored “Sparrow” program. Dominika must endure living in a remote location, where she is trained to by a no-nonsense authority figure (played by Charlotte Rampling) to be a seductive and deadly servant for her country.

Lawrence is undoubtedly one of the best talents in film, as her work in Winter’s Bone and a trio of David O. Russell films (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy) demonstrates her intensity and charisma. But some of her recent choices suggest that her desire to stretch herself and seek out ambitious projects doesn’t always pay off. While Red Sparrow is arguably more audience accessible than the admirably bonkers mother! and a better acting showcase than Passengers (or any of the Hunger Games installments), it’s still an uneven work.

Lawrence’s grim, sexually frank vehicle

succeeds in keeping its audience intrigued and lingering on the details. Where it fails is coming up with an ending that justifies the 140-minute running time. Movies like these thrive on big, last-minute reveals, but the conclusion here is more “Oh, okay, I guess that makes sense” than anything mind-blowing.

It’s refreshing to see a John Le Carre-style spy thriller for an adult audience that doesn’t need endless shoot-outs and car chases. But a big problem with Red Sparrow is that there’s no memorable set-piece or outstanding moment. Even the bloodiest scene in the movie, involving the use of a skin-grafting machine, goes by too quickly.

There’s no questioning the commitment Lawrence makes to this film, as she conveys Dominika’s cold exterior and anguished inner life. There are also several scenes in which her character is naked, beaten, nearly raped and performs the very-R-rated skills she learned during training. Needless to say, this isn’t for fans of Katniss Everdeen or Lawrence’s X-Men movies. In fact, it’s hard to say who this is for.

Luc Besson’s 1991 La Femme Nikita remains the best of these types of thrillers and offers rousing action sequences, as well as a compelling journey, for its female protagonist.

The best things about Red Sparrow are James Newton Howard’s Bernard Herrmann-esque

score and Jo Willems’ beautiful cinematography, which give this pulpy exercise the look and feel of a more prestige film. A distracting quality is Lawrence’s understated but still trying-too-hard Russian accent. To her credit, the last time an actress nailed that tricky accent was Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1990 The Russia House. Lawrence doesn’t embarrass herself but the accent is so cumbersome, I wouldn’t have minded her either dropping it or a change of location.

Aussie Joel Edgerton, playing the love interest CIA agent who pursues Dominika, does a masterful job with his American accent and brings a needed light touch. Jeremy Irons and

Rampling, on the other hand, are too good to be appearing in movies like these.

Director Francis Lawrence (no relation to Jennifer) got his start making some iconic MTV music videos, like Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me a River, Britney Spears’ Slave 4 U and Aerosmith’s Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing. His film career so far includes the better-thanyou-remember DC Comics action/horror Constantine and the Will Smith’s I Am Legend, which has a solid hour before falling apart. Francis Lawrence has the visual chops and his star is game for the punishing material, but he needed a stronger screenplay. ■

You don’t generally lay awake nights over questions of ethics. Rams have strong opinions about everything, and see the world, if not in black and white, then at least in clearly delineated shades of grey. You usually have no trouble deciding between them when necessary. When a close friend waffles over a decision that seems like a no-brainer to you, you might be tempted to take charge and make it for them. Resist this urge!

Persistently advocate your viewpoint if you wish, but don’t take action. This, after all, is actually none of your business, and even though you know what the “right” decision would be, it’s your friend’s place to make it, or screw up (and, hopefully, learn from their mistakes).

There’s something charming about the stammering, fumbling innocence of a teenage first date. However, it’s not something most people would choose to experience much in the following decades. What’s endearing on a 15-year-old is much less so on a 35-year-old. Sometimes I wonder if you’ve figured that out yet, considering the people you choose to date or otherwise get involved with. No one likes to be rushed, and in this case if you even hinted that something’s taking too long, it might be a deal-breaker. Take a breath, my speedy friend. These things take time. Get used to that, or else get used to not getting what you want.
