ar strike–are old threats. The state has literally had many decades to build up reserves, prevent construction of critical infrastructure in dangerous spots, etc. Instead, what do we have? Power plants and fuel depots located in inundation zones?

In any case, Ige said he’s gonna need a bit more money to help deal with all this.

“I’ll be asking the Legislature for more than $2 million right now to build capacity,” Ige said in a statement released on Feb. 20. “It’s all about the safety and security of the people of Hawai‘i.”

Given all the deficiencies and vulnerabilities highlighted by the Hara report, $2 million seems painfully inadequate.

MAUI OFFICIALS RAISING BIG MONEY ON OAHU

SCARIEST HAWAII GOVERNMENT REPORT EVER We’re nowhere near Halloween, but last week the State of Hawaii made public one of the scariest reports I’ve read in a long time.

It’s the All-Hazards Preparedness Improvement Action Plan and Report, issued by a team led by Brigadier General Kenneth S. Hara, Deputy Adjutant General for the State of Hawaii Department of Defense. Commissioned in response to the false missile alert Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) sent out on Jan. 13, the report sets out a “road map” for where the state needs to go in its efforts to keep us all safe in the event of a major disaster.

Though just 36 pages long, the report makes for grim reading.

“It is important to note that HI-EMA is prepared for and stands ready to immediately respond to and provide support to the counties of Hawai‘i ensuring rapid recovery from natural and man-made disasters–with the exception of nuclear capable ballistic missile attack,” states the report.

And even that seems overstated. Here are excerpts from the report dealing with the state’s major vulnerabilities–not merely in the case of missile attack, but basically any major natural disaster: • “The Port of Honolulu is by far the most significant single point of failure, as its capability cannot be duplicated in any other commercial port in the state. The state possesses no heavy salvage or dredging equipment organic to government capabilities. Hence, port damage that requires such equipment for restoration will result in the loss of mass importation for 19-30 days. For each day the port is closed, it takes approximately five days of importation to reestablish inventories.”

• “Similarly, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu is the major air hub, and estimates three days to restore

one runway. Depending on the severity of the disaster, it is estimated that the HNL could be partially operational between 3-12 days. If the Port of Honolulu is closed, HNL has about four days of jet fuel on-hand.”

• “Food and Water supplies are very limited without constant importation. Upon port closure, there is an estimated five to seven days of food within the state. After five days of no food importation, the market capacity will be below forty percent. No large stores of surplus emergency rations exist.”

• “Sixty percent of the major power plants are located in inundation zones. Power is delivered through an overhead transmission & delivery system that is extremely vulnerable to high wind events… The electric generation systems also have limited surplus equipment with some components requiring up to nine weeks for delivery.”

• “Fuel/fuel products are entirely imported through sea transportation… Most fuel storage facilities are in inundation zones, making them highly susceptible to high wind and water damage.”

• “There are insufficient hurricane evacuation shelters to meet the estimated demand of the population and these shelters have no supplies. The designated hurricane evacuation

shelters and the post-impact sheltering systems are in need of retro-fitting and improvement. Currently, the state does not have any plans to reinstitute fallout shelters.”

• “In general, hospitals have 72 hours of emergency surplus of major medical material, pharmaceuticals, fuel for generators, and food/water for patients.”

• “There are approximately seven days of pharmaceuticals in the system after shipments cease.”

• “Hospitals currently operate at about 90% occupancy rate. On average, about 2,505 of 2,784 staffed beds in Hawai‘i are filled, thereby reducing the capability to handle a large surge of mass casualties.”

It’s like the entire state was designed to be as vulnerable to disaster as possible.

“This is uncharted territory, and we are using this experience to vastly improve our strategic planning and disaster preparedness,” Governor David Ige said in a Feb. 20 public statement issued when the Hara report came out. “As we take the action steps described in this report, we will become a stronger, more resilient community.”

Representatives Lynn DeCoite, D–13th District, and Kyle Yamashita, D–12th District held big fundraisers last week on Oahu.

Though neither representative has any constituents there, it’s very common for all state elected officials to raise money there–especially during the legislative session.

It took place on the night of Thursday, Feb. 22, according to the official fundraiser notices made public by the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission, at the Honolulu restaurant Mandalay, which specializes in “Cantonese cuisine and Hong Kong style dim sum.” The minimum suggested donation for both campaigns was $50, though each Representative’s campaign accepted up to $1,000, if anyone felt so inclined.

Seriously, holding campaign fundraisers in Honolulu during the Legislative session (when it’s pretty much guaranteed that lobbyists from all over Hawaii will show up) is one of great strengths of being an incumbent–even if that incumbent’s district never even comes close to Honolulu. In fact, the campaign of state Senator Gil Keith-Agaran, D–5th District, held a $500/person fundraiser on Feb. 20 (though the fundraiser notice only listed the location of the event as “800 South Beretania Street, Suite 210;” Edward Evangelista, Keith-Agaran’s campaign treasurer, did not return a phone call asking for clarification by press time).

Of course, if you’re Governor David Ige, fighting for your political life, holding a fundraiser in lowly Honolulu simply won’t do it. In fact, Ige held two campaign fundraisers in Washington, DC on Feb. 23 and Feb. 27 (his office announced on Feb. 20 that he would spend about a week in Washington to attend meetings with various governor’s associations and federal officials).

What’s really bad about Ige’s fundraiser notices is that they make a mockery of the public disclosure by not being specific about either event’s location. The notices list the Feb. 23 event as having taken place at 1201 New York Ave., NW, Washington DC and the Feb. 27 event at 1900 K Street, NW, Washington DC. Both addresses are just skyscrapers packed with many tenants, though K Street is infamous in Washington as being the preferred home of big corporate lobbyists. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

WORLD’S OLDEST BIRD GIVES BIRTH AGAIN

The world’s oldest known wild bird, a Laysan albatross named Wisdom, is a mother again at the age of 67 years old.

Wisdom and her mate Akeakamai welcomed their newest chick this week to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

Wisdom has been returning to the same nesting site on Midway Atoll since at least 1956, when she was first banded. She’s one of more than three million seabirds that return to Midway Atoll each year to rest, mate, lay eggs and raise their chicks.

Wisdom’s longevity isn’t the only important aspect of her story. She also demonstrates a conservation success story.

Biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are working to restore the habitat that seabirds need at Midway Atoll and throughout the Pacific; and they are removing threats like invasive predators–because protecting the future for seabirds means protecting the places they call home, according to USFWS. “Laysan albatross and other seabirds depend on the habitat protected by Mid-

way Atoll and other remote Pacific wildlife refuges,” said Bob Peyton, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge Manager for Midway Atoll Refuge and Memorial in a Feb. 23 USFWS online post.

Albatrosses and other seabirds return to the same nesting site each year, where they lay a single egg and incubate it for a little over two months. Five months will pass before the chick leaves the nest. In that time, Wisdom and Akeakamai, like all albatross parents, take turns incubating the egg or caring for the chick while the other forages for food at sea.

RITZ-CARLTON KAPALUA CHEF WINS GLORY AT GELATO WORLD CUP Foodies rejoice; the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is adding an award-winning gelato cake to its menus. The resort is bringing the pastry to Kapalua in honor of Chef Yoshikazu Kizu who was the designated pastry chef for the US team during the Gelato World Cup in Italy. Kizu and the USA team placed among the top five teams at the eighth edition of the highly competi-

tive international event.

The USA team’s win is the highest for the United States in the history of the Gelato World Cup. “I’m extremely proud of Team USA’s performance during the Gelato World Cup and am honored to have been given the opportunity to compete,” said Kizu in a Feb. 22 news release from the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s marketing agency. “It was a very positive experience overall, although stressful, challenging, and tough at times. In the end, I felt a sense of great achievement, both personally and professionally.”

Beginning Jan. 21, professionals artisans showcased their gelato, pastry, bakery and coffee skills at Rimini Expo Center in northeast Italy.

Each of the 12 selected national teams were comprised of an executive chef, pastry chef, gelato master, ice sculptor, and a team manager. The USA team consisted of Yoshi, Team Manager Chef Randy Torres, Stefano Biasini, Chef Lyn Wells and ice sculptor Chris Foltz.

For four days, Kizu and his teammates competed in eight major challenges against teams from around the world to earn their top honor. Teams completed daily challenges to demonstrate technical and artistic excellence, while tying each piece of work to a chosen theme. Team USA’s “Urban Legend: Area 51” theme was incorporated into the Cup’s challenges, which included gelato, pastry, high cuisine and ice and nougat sculptures.

Frank Lyko is a biologist at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg with a narrow field of study: the marbled crayfish.

But as Dr. Lyko and his colleagues report in a study published Feb. 5, there’s more to the six-inch crustacean than meets the eye. Until about 25 years ago, this species didn’t exist, The New York Times explains. One single, drastic mutation created a whole new species of crayfish–one that could clone itself. Since then, it has spread across Europe and to other continents and threatened native varieties. The eggs of the crayfish all produce females, which do not need to mate to produce more eggs. Dr. Lyko’s DNA research offers new insights into why most animals have sex, because there are so few examples of sex-free species (they don’t last long). He admits that the marbled crayfish may last only 100,000 years. “That would be a long time for me personally, but in evolution it would just be a blip on the radar,” he said.

About a week after an 11-year-old boy scraped his elbow while playing in a tidal pool on a California beach, pediatricians treating him for the resulting abscess removed a small, hard object and were surprised to discover a live checkered periwinkle marine snail, according to United Press International. Dr. Albert Khait and his colleagues at Loma Linda University wrote in BMJ Case Reports that a snail’s egg had apparently become embedded in the boy’s skin when he scraped it. The mollusk later hatched inside the abscess. Dr. Khait said the boy took the snail home as a pet, but it did not survive living outside its former home.

BLIMEY! Michelle Myers of Buckeye, Arizona, suffers from blinding headaches, but it’s what happens afterward that until recently had doctors stumped. Myers, who has never been out of the United States, has awakened from her headaches three times in the last seven years with a different foreign accent. The first time it was Irish; the second was Australian, and both lasted only about a week. But Myers’ most recent event, which was two years ago, left her with a British accent that she still has. Doctors have diagnosed her with Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare condition that usually accompanies a neurological event such as a stroke. Myers told ABC-15 that the loss of her normal accent makes her sad: “I feel like a different person.

Everybody only sees or hears Mary Poppins.”

MAIL CALL The Federal Agency for Environmental Protection in Mexico is investigating a Feb. 7 attempt to express-mail a Bengal tiger cub from Jalisco to Queretaro, reported WDBJTV. The cub had been sedated and packed into a plastic container; a dog sniffing for contraband detected it. Wildlife agents said the cub was underweight and dehydrated but otherwise healthy, and its papers were in order. However, because mailing it was considered mistreatment, it was relocated to a wildlife protection center.

WHY NOT? Terran Woolley of Hutchinson, Kansas, got a bright idea after he read the bylaws and requirements to become the state’s governor. “I was reading some stories about the young teenagers that were entering the governor’s race... and I thought, ‘I wonder if... Angus could run,’” Woolley explained to KWCH-TV. Angus is Woolley’s wirehaired vizsla, a four-legged, furry friend of the people who Woolley said would promise soft couches and a “completely anti-squirrel agenda” if elected.

Alas, on Feb. 12, the Kansas secretary of state’s office dashed Angus’ dreams when it declared that despite the fact that there are no specific restrictions against a dog being governor, Angus would be unable to carry out the responsibilities of the office.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Kenneth R. Shutes Jr. of New Richmond, Wisconsin, bolted from a midnight traffic stop on Feb. 6, but he didn’t make it far before having to call 911 for help. The Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported that Shutes got stuck in a frozen swamp in rural Star Prairie and, after about an hour, became unable to walk as temperatures dipped to minus eight degrees. Fire and rescue workers removed Shutes from the wooded area, and he was later charged in St. Croix County Circuit Court for failing to obey an officer, marijuana possession and obstructing an officer.

Shutes told a deputy he “needed an incident like this because he was making poor decisions in his life.” ■

Sure, the letter was mailed from an office here in Hawaii, but I’m still trying to figure out how it got to me on Maui instead of, you know, COLORADO. I mean, he and I have the same apartment number, which I guess is why it ended up in my particular mailbox, but other than that, there was absolutely no reason why that letter should have ever been delivered to anyone in Hawaii. ■

GUN MONEY WHAT DO MAUI’S REPRESENTATIVES THINK ABOUT THE NRA?

I

n the weeks following Florida’s Parkland high school massacre, a new fervor has set in when it comes to challenging the formerly bulletproof National Rifle Association (NRA)– and the organization is beginning to take some significant hits.

Whether it’s the powerful emotions created by angry, grieving Parkland students, or a collective consciousness snap at the news of yet another assault rifle slaughter, individual outrage seems to have coalesced into a steely muscularity intent on weakening the gun rights giant on a number of levels. Citizens are challenging local and national representatives who have taken campaign donations from the gun lobby, the NRA’s activities abroad are being ex-

amined, and now corporations are beginning to alter their relationships as well.

Starting last week, a steady stream of corporations have canceled discount programs offered to NRA members and asked that their names be removed from the organization’s website. At press time, they included the Metlife, Inc. insurance company, software giant Symantec, all the major rental car companies, Delta and United Airlines, the Wyndham group of hotels such as Ramada and Days Inn, and moving companies Allied Van Lines and North American Van Lines.

Even banks have sidled away. First National Bank of Omaha announced that, due to “customer feedback,” it no longer will issue its special NRA visa card, once known as “the official credit card of the

N.R.A.” Bank of America announced that it would review its relationships with those companies manufacturing assault weapons for non-military use.

And even though Amazon doesn’t sell firearms, it’s being attacked for streaming video content from the NRA’s TV channel.

For its part, the NRA has described the cancellations as “a shameful display of political and civic cowardice.”

Hawaii, with its strict laws tightly controlling gun ownership, registration and use, has one of the lowest gun crime rates in the county. Still, Honolulu Civil Beat’s Chad Blair recently jumped into the postParkland coverage recently by answering the question: what Hawaiian legislators have taken money from the political action

committees of the NRA or its local affiliate, the Hawaiian Rifle Association (HRA)?

There were dozens of names on the list, which listed any donations received since 2008, but only three from Maui. Former Speaker of the House Joe Souki (D-Wailuku) received $150 from the NRA and $2,800 from the HRA. Representatives Kyle Yamashita (D-Upcountry) and Angus McKelvey (D-West Maui) each received NRA donations of $250 (all three representatives are up for reelection this year).

Now, those amounts are pretty paltry– but as Blair pointed out–there are indications that any kind of gun lobby donation or support will be used as a campaign issue this election year.

groups because they’re national political groups, but we have the Women Helping Women non-profit on Maui that does amazing work helping women escape domestic violence. I thought it was a chance to support them and send a message of solidarity. So I gave them a contribution of $250.”

He added that if he retains his seat in this year’s election, his priority during the next session will be to introduce a bill for mandatory gun insurance (proposals for gun liability insurance have been proposed in several states and in Congress; the NRA currently offers such a policy).

“We have insurance for our cars that everyone has to buy,” McKelvey said.

McKelvey also says he will never take another dime from the gun lobby. “No more,” he said. “My community wants to know where I stand, especially on things like this. I’ve never voted one way or another for anybody or anything in my life, but I don’t even want the appearance of that right now. I won’t accept any more gun money going forward. It’s a pledge I’m happy to make.”

We also contacted the rest of Maui’s statehouse legislators who hadn’t received any gun lobby money to see if their policies had undergone any changes in the post-Parkland environment.

Only a couple responded. Senator Gilbert Keith-Agaran (D-Central Maui) said he hasn’t taken money from the gun rights organizations, but added that he usually isn’t aware of who makes contributions to him. “My treasurer knows, but I’ve never paid too much attention to exactly who was making the contribution,” he said.

Although he voted against gun registration in 2016–the vote the NRA wanted–his NRA rating is low: 21 percent in 2016. He shrugged off the number. “I’ve never asked for their endorsement and I’ve never responded to their questionnaire (which helps the group formulate its ratings),” Keith-Agaran said.

He thinks the NRA probably has a low opinion of most Hawaiian legislators: “We have strict laws and they’ve gotten even stricter for the last couple of years.”

At the other end of the NRA rating spectrum is Sen. Roz Baker (D-West and South Maui), who co-sponsored the successful 2016 gun registration bill. Her last HRA percentage was zero. Her NRA grade–a resounding F–prompted a big laugh during a phone call last week.

“I love it! My badge of honor,” she said. “I don’t take [their] donations, I don’t fill out their questionnaires, and because I wear my feelings and emotions on my sleeve when they come to testify, I’ve probably given them stink eye.” She laughed again. “So yeah, they love me.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

Of course, those plans, and his support for this session’s gun bills (see accompanying story) will probably do some damage to the current ratings he has received from the NRA (92 percent) and the HRA (71 percent).

ratings in the 90th percentile until 2016, when Souki voted in favor of gun registration. Perhaps not coincidentally, his 2016 rating dropped to 67 percent with the HRA and to 50 percent with the NRA. Surprisingly, although Rep. Yamashita voted the way the NRA wanted in 2016–against gun registration–his NRA performance ratings have hovered in the 60 percent range for the past few years. Neither legislator returned calls for comment.

But McKelvey was a different story.

In an interview, McKelvey said that, although his office only received one email about the $250 campaign contribution, he took immediate action.

“I didn’t even remember it and had to go back and find it in my records,” he said. “It was from 2012, so that money had come and gone a long time ago for regular campaign purposes.” His constituent suggested that he do something to support the fight against domestic violence or to donate to a group working to end gun violence, and McKelvey agreed.

HAWAII’S GUN BILLS If Civil Beat’s list of NRA/HRA donation recipients didn’t irk the already agitated gun lobby, two bills moving steadily through the legislature most certainly have.

The first, known as SB 2046 in the Senate and HB1908 in the House, is informally known as the “Bump Stock” bill. It would make it a felony to manufacture, import, sell or possess devices designed to accelerate the firing rate of semi-automatic weapons. The perpetrator of last year’s Las Vegas massacre used such a device.

The second, the so-called “Firearm Surrender” bill (SB 2436/HB2228) would shorten the time that a person who is disqualified from owning a gun would have to surrender it. The current time limit is 30 days; the House measure would reduce it to 48 hours, the Senate version to 24 hours.

Maui legislators were involved in the process, some apparently more enthusiastically than others.

Sen. Gilbert Keith-Agaran was a “primary introducer” of the bump stock bill, although he said in an interview that he thought the new measure might be a bit redundant.

“The attorney general’s office actually thinks that bump stocks and other trigger mechanisms are already covered by the ban in our statute, but the bill’s being introduced anyway, just to make sure it’s crystal clear that these are the types of things covered by the ban.”

He added that he’s “leaning towards” supporting both measures.

Sen. Roz Baker was a primary sponsor of the firearms surrender bill and also supports the bump stock measure, which comes as no surprise. She also was a force behind the successful and groundbreaking 2016 legislation mandating gun registration in the state, making Hawaii among the strictest states in terms of regulating gun ownership.

But in an interview, her thoughts wandered nationally as she pondered President Donald Trump’s proposal that teachers be armed in the classroom. “How stupid is that?” she said.

“My mother was an elementary school teacher, my father was a school administrator and even through I grew up in Texas and a lot of our friends were hunters, my family never was. To think that’s the answer to gun violence anyplace is just ludicrous. It’s anathema to what teachers want to do. That’s not the space that they come from, not the teachers that I know anyway.”

Although Rep. Angus McKelvey voted against gun registration in 2016 (“because it was in violation of federal law”), he is strongly supporting the two bills moving through the House. “I’m glad the bump stock bill is coming before us, I will stand in strong support of it, it’s an important bill,” he said.

McKelvey feels the same about the firearm surrender: “It’s a great bill and I look forward to supporting that as well.”

Whether Joe Souki, with his A rating from the NRA, plans to support this new legislation is unknown; he did not return a call for comment.

Other Maui legislators also did not return calls asking how they regarded the measures. However, Rep. Lynn DeCoite (D-Molokai/East Maui) was a primary introducer of both House bills, and Rep. Kaniela Ing (D-South Maui) was a primary introducer of the House bump stock bill.

house-style dining room and bar. Maui Brewing Company worked with Oahu’s WCIT Architecture, who also designed Nobu Honolulu and Andaz Maui, to create the space. They also designed MBC’s Waikiki location.

The same creative spirit that goes into brewing and designing their craft beers went into their restaurant design. In the dining room, huge garage-door style doors open onto the lanai, creating an outdoor feel to the whole area. “The restaurant opens up to a very large gar-

The popular tasting room and brewery have been there for several years, and regulars and the pau hana crowd will be happy to hear that the tasting room remains the same. Behind the long bar hangs whimsical signs for 32 colorfully-named beers. Tourists and locals scour the selections, ordering samplers and draughts. There are still

guitarist Justin Morris and the Hitzig brothers will take the stage with bassist Matthew Del Olmo, and John Michael Jelliffe will play bass for some of the show.

The band members blend their fiddle, bass, guitar and mandolin to create soulful, genre-defying music that is good through speakers and even better live. “People with a love for original, bluegrass, country, singersongwriter, folk, jazz, funk, gypsy jazz and Irish music find a natural connection with us,” he says. Their instrumental and vocal songs, with names like “Arizona,” “Hillbilly Bubble” and “Cocaine Birds” take turns being playful and soulful, fun and real.

“We are grateful to be alive playing music and sharing this life with others,” says Morris. “That’s one reason this recording will be cool. It’s going to document a spe-

“We’ve played everywhere from the roof of a house at sunrise to a kitchen in a taqueria,” says Orion. Though they’ve played at private parties on secluded islands, they have a penchant for spontaneous concerts. “Some of my favorite memories are when we just pull out our instruments and our surroundings embrace it,” says Morris.

The band has crossed the continental US over a dozen times and appears in Hawai‘i yearly. They are completely independent, which means they travel, book shows, performs and record on their own.

oing to a BrownChicken BrownCow Stringband show is like stepping into a bar in Appalachia, or listening to a midnight fireside serenade, or playing your dad’s old albums–often, all at once.

Curious about what that feels like? On Saturday, Mar. 2, you’ll get the chance. The boys of BrownChicken BrownCow will play on Maui once again, this time to record a live album. The talented, earnest boys of the band will be taking to the stage for the welcoming crowd at Charley’s, who has hosted the band yearly over the past decade.

“I’m super excited about this show because it’s going to be our first band recording in several years,” says fiddler Xander Hitzig. His brother Orion is also in the band (he plays the mandolin). Together,

Originally of West Virginia, the band started out on the sidewalks of Paia a decade ago and grew on back porches and around campfires. They’ve become beloved on Maui for their energetic, entertaining shows.

“When we first arrived on Island, we played on the sidewalk for months,” says Morris. “We met everyone on the street, locals and tourists, until our audience grew so big they began stopping traffic at the corner of Hana Highway and Baldwin.”

Something about the band clicked with many Maui residents, probably because the sounds fill an uncommon genre for the Maui music scene. “They find a natural connection with us because we inhabit all of these different styles blended together,” says Xander Hitzig, “and there’s not a lot on the island with these sorts of genres for them to connect with.”

And many embraced the band, who return each winter. “When we are on Maui I don’t feel like I’m on the road, I feel like I’m home,” says Morris. “The thing about playing on Maui for us is, we have not only a fanbase but a family base,” says Orion Hitzig.

The guys know how to put on a show; their concerts are a good time. Their bar shows are a down-home, high-energy experience that goes well with whiskey. Loyal fans dance and stomp and sing along. Guys with stately mustaches and PBRs hang out near the saloon doors, and ladies in sundresses and cowboy boots whirl across the dance floor.

On the stage, the band, clad in suspenders, clutch their instruments, their fingers a blur and their hearts on their shirtsleeves.

MAUI 5K – The seventh annual Maui 5K begins and ends at Ma‘alaea Triangle. riter/director Alex Garland’s Annihilation is about duality, specifically the uncomfortable contrast between suicide and self-destruction. Because it’s such a predictable, lumbering and thoroughly unpleasant film, it seems to have much less on its mind.

Natalie Portman portrays Lena, a soldier turned biologist who’s abducted and forced to take part in a bizarre mission. Three years earlier, a fallen star created a massive landscape, referred to as The Shimmer, full of genetic mutations and oversized monsters. No one entering The Shimmer has ever returned. For reasons I’ll leave out, Lena convinces Dr. Ventress (played

by Jennifer Jason Leigh), the head of the operation for containing the phenomenon, into joining her and an entirely female-led team on a mission to the source of The Shimmer.

Garland wrote The Beach and wrote/ directed the admirable but seriously overpraised Ex Machina a few years back. Much of the first act of Annihilation is remarkably similar to Arrival (both films are about lovesick scientists, working in academia, who are recruited to explore extraterrestrial phenome-

na). Garland allows character and narrative to build carefully and pulls us in with vivid CGI. But where he ultimately takes us feels like reheated bits from The Mist, Event Horizon and especially John Carpenter’s The Thing, oozing together after too much time in the microwave.You know you’re in trouble when your first action sequence–involving a killer croc–feels like an outtake from Lake Placid.

Despite the strong build-up, our heroes come across as even dopier than the foolish scientists in those Ridley Scott Alien prequels: if you’re entering a force field into an alien landscape, wouldn’t you wear protective breathing gear and armored suits? Why on Earth would you sleep in a deadly jungle in a bright yellow tent? This is one of those horror movies where people do dumb things all the time, like venture into an obviously scary cave that’s clearly a bad place or turn their backs on a lurking monster.

For some reason, everyone speaks in hushed whispers. It neuters the performances and kills the anticipation of seeing Portman and Leigh, masterful actors, finally working together. I’m a fan of co-star Tessa Thompson but her mannered delivery makes her work seem especially foolish. Playing the loony role of Portman’s husband is Oscar Isaac, who shouldn’t be in movies like Suburbicon or this.

I liked the Ghostbusters reboot better

There is one really scary sequence and the creature effects are persuasive. But because there’s no life to the characters or performances (though Portman is really trying here), there’s no suspense. Despite a few lofty ideas tossed around, this operates like your average slasher movie. The world of The Shimmer provides some neat visuals but note how lovingly positioned everything appears. It looks exactly like what it is: art direction.

I had already given up on the movie well before the big ending, which will likely be discussed for years to come. If nothing else, the climatic, elaborate light show is full of cool and revolting visuals that guarantees this will garner a cult following. I dug all the pret-

ty colors but openly laughed at its silliness.

A better comparison than Arrival is Altered States, which managed to balance grand scientific concepts into a bonkers sci-fi monster movie. Some key components that movie has that this one lacks: it was fun, enjoyable and had a sense of humor.

Annihilation feels much longer than its two-hour running time and will likely inspire walkouts from a mid-way sequence that is alarmingly gruesome. There’s a lot of nightmare fodder here but it’s overly familiar, down to the obvious closing moment. Garland’s film is ambitious but his rich visuals serve the story the way newspaper is used to wrap a dead fish. ■

MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL MARCH MEETING - Wed. Mar 7. The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC) invites the public to their monthly meeting. The presentation will offer updates on the State of Hawaii’s management of Maui’s nearshore fisheries and coral reef resources.

Hear from Russell Sparks, Aquatic Biologist of State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources and Division of Aquatic Resources. Sparks will give an update on the status of Maui's reefs following the bleaching event of 2015. MNMRC staff will also be offering updates on their recent and ongoing projects including the expansion of a volunteerbased water quality monitoring program and a study of corals off Olowalu. I often say I have trouble believing in the future. I just see the odds stacked well against us. This affects how I live my life–making me be much more in the moment, and milk every ounce of enjoyment out of this golden age that I can. If you believed– truly believed–that you had less than 20 years to live (or less than 10, or less than five), would you changed how you live now? Would any of those changes make your life better? This week, try adopting them, regardless of your actual beliefs about our collective future.
