It’s with very cautious optimism that I think (okay, hope) that this nation has turned a corner in its response to school shootings. I know, usually we stick to the script of crying, offering useless “thoughts and prayers” and then forgetting about it, until the next mass shooting. Some people may note that many mass shooters are young men with histories of domestic violence, but nothing is ever done about that.

But the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida–which claimed 17 lives–seems different. Students there who survived the massacre aren’t sticking to the script. They’re speaking out against the availability of guns like the AR-15 rifle, which was used in the shooting. They’re denouncing the National Rifle Association (NRA) which loudly opposes all gun control efforts. And they’re putting intense social media pressure on the Republicans who do the NRA’s bidding in Congress.

In fact, the Parkland shooting was more than a week ago as I write these words, and the national media is still talking about it. And it's possible we’ll still talk about it next month, because the Parkland students have announced a nationwide walkout on March 24–at 10am in every time zone, students and teachers are saying they’ll march out of class for 17 minutes–one minute for every death at Parkland.

Here in Hawaii, the Legislature is debating a few gun control bills, though none deal specifically with the AR-15.

Senate Bill 2046 and House Bill 1908 ban “bump stocks” (they help a shooter increase a rifle’s rate of fire, and one was those reportedly used in the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas). SB 2436 and HB 2228 shortens the time period for people to surrender firearms after being disqualified to own one, to 24 and 48 hours, respectively. Of course, the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action–the NRA’s lobbying arm– opposes all these bills.

In truth, there’s no easy answer as to how to lower gun violence in the U.S.,

because guns play such a huge factor here, both in terms of American heroic folklore and the rise of mass shootings in places like schools. But guns aren’t equitably distributed throughout the U.S., and neither is gun violence.

In fact, when you look at current gun violence statistics, there are very sharp, very recognizable lines.

For instance, let’s look at firearm mortality rates in 2016, the most recent such data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control. Hawaii placed quite low in the list, with a rate of just 4.5 (that’s 4.5 deaths per 100,000 people).

As an experiment, I took the 10 states with the lowest firearm mortality rates (3.4-9.0 deaths per 100,000 people) and matched them up to the 2016 Presidential Election electoral college results. Guess what? Democrat Hillary Clinton won all 10 states.

Then I went through the CDC stats and compiled a list of the 10 states with the highest firearm mortality rates (17.7-23.3 deaths per 100,000 people), and matched them against the 2016 Presidential Election results. This time, nine of the 10 states all went to Republican Donald Trump (New Mexico, with a firearm death rate of 18.1, was the outlier).

This a chilling picture of a violently divided nation. Half believes that civilians shouldn’t be able to own weapons like the AR-15, which were originally designed for the military, while the other half believes that the way to fix mass shootings is by arming teachers and hardening schools into fortresses.

None of us will be able to live in this country if all this continues.

It took two months, but The Maui News finally ran a story (without a byline, of course) on Feb. 13 on the Hawaii Supreme Court exonerating MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo. As Civil Beat columnist Brett Oppegaard noted the day before, in a Feb. 12 story, Russo made headlines across Hawaii back in 2012 when two Maui Police Officers arrested him while he was photographing them on the side of Haleakala Highway.

“Other media sources in the state, including Maui’s daily newspaper, The Maui News , as well as Maui Now and the Honolulu StarAdvertiser, rushed to report about the arrest, using Russo’s police mugshot, and even unchallenged verbiage provided by officers involved in the case, including what turned out to be misleading statements,” Oppegaard wrote.

But then years went by. The case dragged through the court. The media lost interest. So by the time Russo won a complete vindication, hardly anyone in Hawaii reported on it–from a media standpoint, this is a profound injustice.

“When Russo finally was cleared of all wrongdoing by the Hawaii Supreme Court in December–five years later–only his publication (MauiTime) and Civil Beat’s Chad Blair covered the big win for the First Amendment in similarly splashy fashion.

KITV did have a short story about the Supreme Court case beginning (but not how it turned out),” Oppegaard wrote.

This happens all the time in the media, which is why Oppegaard–a media critic–wrote about it. And he even got Maui News Managing Editor Lee Imada to explain why his paper had reported on Russo’s arrest, trial and appeals, but hadn’t informed its readers of his ultimate exoneration.

“I know this is important to [Russo], but a lot of court cases are sort of marginal,” Imada says in Oppegaard’s column. “Sometimes, they can get lost.

It’s not done intentionally. Because our staff is so small, we try to focus on stories that touch the pulse of our community. That’s just the realities of the newspaper these days.”

nally got around to reporting that the case against Russo has finally been dismissed, but come on–all news organizations in the U.S. have faced cuts in the last few years. And the whole point of putting an arrest on the front page in the first place is to show “the community” that it’s not a “marginal” case.

For the first time in millennial women’s memory, we have a high profile sexual harassment case against a sitting legislator (Rep. Joe Souki, D–Wailuku). not be expected to stick their necks out for victimized women co-workers unless male leaders do the same. Even powerful women have a lot more to lose then their male peers by standing up against sexist behaviors. Both leadership and rank-andfile workers must be committed and vocal about their intolerance of sex discrimination in the workplace. Without these ingredients, sexism is likely to continue to create a less than dignifying workplace for women and, at worst, a violent workplace.

Third, we need to educate all generations, especially young children, to participate in a different gender system where men are not privileged over women. They must learn that men are not naturally superior or different in intelligence and emotional capacity.

Women who are experiencing sexual harassment need to understand the basics of where they can go and their pathways to legal justice or, what’s usually sought, making the abusive behavior stop. The best place for women in Hawai‘i to turn is the Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women, which is the state agency committed by law to serve

Everyone got their flu shot, right? I’m kidding, of course, though if everyone did get this season’s flu shot–just 30 percent effective–it would likely make things only marginally better. At least 84 children have died nationwide from influenza since the fall of 2017, according to the Feb. 20 Chicago Tribune. What’s more, on Feb. 10 Fortune reported that the flu this season “is killing up to 4,000 Americans a week.”

This is bad, but it’s not a pandemic, which according to new research spearheaded by University of Hawaii at Manoa Assistant Professor Victoria Fan, will likely hit even harder than scientists first estimated.

Fan is the lead author (along with Lawrence Summers, a former U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and former President of Harvard University and Dean T. Jamison, Emeritus Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington at Seattle) of a new paper titled “Pandemic Risk: How large are expected losses,” published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization.

Here’s the paper’s abstract, which should drive home exactly how bad things can (will?) get: “There is an unmet need for greater investment in preparedness against major epidemics and pandemics,” states the paper.

“The arguments in favour of such investment have been largely based on estimates of the losses in national incomes that might occur as the result of a major epidemic or pandemic. Recently, we extended the estimate to include the valuation of the lives lost as a result of pandemic-related increases in mortality. This produced markedly higher

estimates of the full value of loss that might occur as the result of a future pandemic.

We parametrized an exceedance probability function for a global influenza pandemic and estimated that the expected number of influenza-pandemic-related deaths is about 720,000 per year. We calculated that the expected annual losses from pandemic risk to be about 500 billion United States dollars–or 0.6% of global income–per year. This estimate falls within–but towards the lower end of–the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s estimates of the value of the losses from global warming, which range from 0.2% to 2% of global income. The estimated percentage of annual national income represented by the expected value of losses varied by country income grouping: from a little over 0.3% in high-income countries to 1.6% in lower-middle-income countries.

Most of the losses from influenza pandemics come from rare, severe events.”

That sounds dire, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s nothing we can do.

“Policymakers may be able to estimate the economic losses that come with rare but potentially devastating events,” said Fan in a Jan. 31 UH Manoa news release. “We hope this can lead to more appropriate adjustments for national policies and investments, and international collaborations on pandemic preparedness.”

#MeToo, is demanding panic buttons to protect women housekeeping staff against abusive hotel guests. Activists are criticizing the state for renaming our international airport after Hawai‘i’s most famous “alleged” sexual predator just months before the #MeToo outbreak.

Some local commentators, attorneys and journalists have trivialized the #MeToo movement by claiming the real problem is women are unable to tell the difference between innocuous social salutes and inappropriate behavior. These voices are part of the culture invested in ending the #MeToo movement because they benefit from the status quo. As feminist activists, we hope to see the #MeToo movement end. But the only way to end the #MeToo movement is to end sexism as a system.

On Feb. 12, we held the first public discussion on #MeToo in Hawai‘i. The conversation was centered on what the media might consider “low-profile”–Native, immigrant and working class–women.

The goal is to emphasize the need to create a new system rather than limit ourselves to individual takedowns of well-positioned men.

To end sexism and sex discrimination, which includes sexual harassment and sexual assault, we must examine the conditions that make a culture of sexism in the workplace and campus commonplace.

Then, to co-create a new culture, we must train our peers and youth to understand the ways that male attitudes and violence towards women work to keep women workers inferior, silent, and excluded.

The only people who can hold men accountable are other men. First of all, patriarchal society teaches men to feel superior to women. This means that listening to women means risking one’s manhood and being socially shamed by other men and even women.

Second, women in the workplace should

A Canada goose got its final revenge on Feb. 1 when, after being shot out of the sky by a hunter in Easton, Maryland, it struck Robert Meilhammer, 51, of Crapo, Maryland, seriously injuring the waterfowler.

NPR reported that Meilhammer was hunting with a group when one of the large geese flying overhead was killed and fell about 90 feet, landing on Meilhammer’s head and knocking him out. It also dislodged two of Meilhammer’s teeth. Adult Canada geese weigh about 12 to 14 pounds and can have a wingspan of 6 feet. At press time, Meilhammer was in stable condition after being airlifted to a hospital.

Aaron Meininger, 29, of Hernando Beach, Florida, was arrested on Feb. 2 after Hernando County deputies caught him stealing items from the Demarco Family Funeral Home in Spring Hill. When officers arrived, Meininger was carrying a tub of formaldehyde out of the building. They also found makeup, nail polish, electric clippers, soap and other items used in funeral preparation in Meininger’s car. Curiously, the Tampa Bay Times reported, Meininger told deputies that he was “bored” and “messed up” and didn’t even know what kind of business he was burgling. He said he probably would have just thrown the stolen items away.

INEXPLICABLE Somebody in Muskegon, Michigan, didn’t want the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LII. Immediately following the Eagles’ victory over the New England Patriots on Feb. 4, Subaru of Muskegon ran an ad on local NBC affiliate WOOD-TV that featured 30 seconds of silence and a written message: “Congratulations Patriots!” WOOD-TV reported via Twitter that the business had submitted only one version of the ad and had specified that it run regardless of the game’s outcome.

PRECOCIOUS When a Texas stripper arrived at her 11:30 a.m. gig on Feb. 1, she smelled a rat: Her destination turned out to be Noel Grisham Middle School in Round Rock, Texas. Rather than going inside, the performer called the school and reported a prank. Jenny LaCosteCaputo, a district spokesperson, told the Austin American-Statesman the student jokester had used his cellphone to order the stripper and paid for it with his parents’ credit card.

Houston Realtor Nicole Lopez is sporting a new nickname these days: The Taco Lady.

Since late 2017, Lopez has incorporated a novel incentive for buyers of homes she’s listed: $250 in free tacos with the purchase of a home. “Let’s be honest, everyone in Texas loves tacos,” Lopez told KHOU-TV. “And so, it’s really been this ‘taco the town,’” she laughed. NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE Staff at an internet cafe in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China, had to call paramedics on Jan. 28 when a gamer lost all feeling in his lower limbs after playing the same game for more than 20 hours straight. Newsweek reported that the unnamed man didn’t realize he had become paralyzed until he tried to use the restroom and couldn’t move his legs. As he was being carried out on a stretcher, he was heard begging his friends to finish the game for him.

WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME A parking lot in Augusta, Georgia, became the scene of a nightmare for an unsuspecting motorcyclist and his 1982 Honda bike on Jan. 31. On his way to exchange some shirts at Target in the Augusta Exchange shopping center, Don Merritt told WJBF-TV, “I was going to go around the back to avoid the speed bumps,” but when he did, he and his bike fell into a sinkhole. Firefighters were called to rescue Merritt, who suffered a skull fracture and a loose tooth as a result of the 15-foot fall. The bike was totaled. “It’s not good customer relations,” Merritt said about the sinkhole. The center property manager reportedly is fixing the hole.

SMOOTH REACTIONS Sonny Donnie Smith, 38, of Clackamas, Oregon, was feeling snubbed in September 2016 when both his father and his brother were invited to a family wedding, but Sonny wasn’t. As a perfectly reasonable revenge, Sonny made anonymous phone calls to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and the Midland International Air and Space Port in Midland, Texas, claiming that his father and brother were terrorists and would be traveling through the airports. An FBI investigation revealed no terrorist threats, and after interviewing the father and brother, they were both released. On Feb. 1, Sonny Smith pleaded guilty to making the calls, according to The Oregonian, and will be sentenced on May 10.

REDNECK CHRONICLES Cheryl Merrill, 60, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, was arguing with her boyfriend of five years about who would win Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4 and became so enraged shortly after kickoff that she picked up a wooden shelf and threw it at him. WAR Will the public lose out in the fight over how best to ensure open government in Hawaii?

T

his story shouldn’t exist. I shouldn’t have to write it, and you certainly shouldn’t need to read it. But if you believe in democracy and open, honest government, then nothing about the political state of affairs in this country, state or county is even close to optimal. Which is why I’m writing this story, which you should most definitely read.

There’s a war going on here in Hawaii

over open government. It would be easy if it were between powerful, menacing authoritarian forces on one side, and bright, honorable advocates for transparency on the other, but it’s not. It’s between two entities, one public and one private, who are dedicated to ensuring that the State of Hawaii operates as openly as possible. This war, in which two wellmeaning entities slap each other with wonkish reports and colorful infographics, is–on the face of it–rather ridiculous.

Until you start really thinking about it–

about what they’re arguing over–then you realize that the citizens of Hawaii may end up the only real losers here.

The fight is between the Office of Information Practices (OIP), a state government agency, and the Civil Beat Law Center for the Public Interest, a nonprofit organization. Both want to ensure that the public in Hawaii gets unfettered access to public officials’ records and deliberations.

The OIP basically ensures that government organizations throughout Hawaii properly adhere to two state laws–the

Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) and the Sunshine Law. The first is the state’s open records law, which ensures that citizens have access to government records and the second prevents government bodies from making official decisions without proper input and oversight from the public.

“OIP provides uniform interpretation, advice, and training on these laws to nearly all of Hawaii’s state and county agencies and boards and to the general public,” states the OIP website. “OIP renders advice

Delays like this are horrible for the people who made the public access request in the first place, mostly because it’s highly unlikely that after two years or so, whatever information was originally asked for is still relevant.

Ironically, there was virtually no delay in OIP’s response to the Civil Beat Law Center report. In fact, it took the agency just a few hours to send out its own 10page response, titled “OIP’S Response to a Staggeringly Misleading Report.” The OIP response makes 15 points in rebuttal, many of which include detailed legal citations and references.

“solutions that promote transparency and responsiveness in government to better serve the people of Hawaii” and does other work like “investigating questionable government activity, advocating for corrective action, and, if needed, enforcing corrective measures in the courts.”

Both organizations seek to help the public get better access to government.

And right now, both organizations are attacking each other.

Civil Beat Law Center fired the most recent salvo, on Feb. 12, with a 10-page report titled “A National Comparison: Delays at OIP Are Staggering” (the report follows on similar research the center released a year ago). The damning report makes a very compelling case that all is not well over at the OIP. “[D]espite high staffing per capita, OIP has the longest delays for public access disputes among its peer agencies with available information,” states the Civil Beat Law Center report. “Forcing the public to wait two years or more for resolution of public access disputes at OIP is unacceptable.”

In fact, according to the report, “None of OIP’s formal decision from 2015 to 2017 were decided in less than two years.” The Civil Beat Law Center report also looked at 29 other states that have agencies like OIP, and found that “OIP is the worst among its peer agencies for delays in addressing public access disputes.”

OIP’s entire response centers on its view that Civil Beat Law Center didn’t factor in all the OIP does. It says its opinions are, in contrast to other states, required to be lengthy and detailed because the courts defer to them. It says OIP “has historically been underfunded and not given the resources needed to perform its duties.” But despite that, OIP says that when you look at all the requests for service the agency gets–not just the formal complaints–it’s actually doing quite well, even when compared to other states.

“If fast, informal advice comparable to other states’ ‘opinions’ is desired, then people are already getting answers the same day from OIP through the AOD [Attorney of the Day] service, which responds to 77% of all requests for OIP’s assistance,” states the OIP response. What’s more, OIP says that in 2017, it “resolved 93% of 1,234 formal and informal cases in the same year they were filed, of which 77% were typically resolved the same day through the AOD service.”

While it’s true the Civil Beat Law Center report doesn’t address OIP’s Attorney of the Day service–the center doesn’t consider it part of OIP’s core mission–it’s also true that resolving big cases is a problem at OIP. According to Civil Beat Law Center, OIP resolved 70 “major matters” in 2016, but just

34 in 2017. What’s more, a chart included with OIP’s own response would seem to confirm a huge criticism from Civil Beat Law Center. It shows the OIP had 150 “unresolved cases” at the end of 2017, which is 46 more than it had at the end of 2016.

But it’s the OIP’s last rebuttal point that’s most damning–and head-scratching: that Civil Beat Law Center is trying to steal away potential OIP clients.

“CBLC’s motives are suspect,” states the OIP response. “In last year’s report, CBLC recommended the elimination of the AOD service; this year’s Report fails to recognize or account for the cases resolved informally by the AOD same day service to prevent disputes from arising or escalating to formal complaints. Without OIP’s primary means of providing fast, free, informal, and neutral advice, members of the public would suffer the most as they do not have alternative access to governmental attorneys that assist agencies and boards.

Without OIP to provide this service, would there be more clients for a ‘public interest’ law firm to choose from?”

And that’s how the OIP response ends– with this question.

“It’s a strange response,” Civil Beat Law Center executive director Brian Black told me during a Feb. 15 phone conversation.

“All of our work is pro bono, and our mission statement is broader than just government transparency. Our current mission is to come up with collaborative solutions to promote government transparency. I see us as heavily aligned with the mission of OIP.” In its report, Civil Beat Law Center makes a couple recommendations. First, that the State of Hawaii create a “citizen commission” that would “supervise OIP’s performance to ensure timely public assistance in accordance with its mission.”

And second, that the state impose a “hard deadline” on the OIP to render decisions.

In fact, Senate Bill 3092–introduced by 18 Senators, including Roz Baker, D-South Maui, and Gil Keith-Agaran, D-Kahului– proposes to give OIP six months to complete big decisions. That bill was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb. 13, but nothing’s happened to it since then.

For its part, OIP says it “already has its own goal to resolve formal cases within 12 months of filing,” but to meet a shorter deadline would require “money and positions appropriated and authorized immediately, and additional time to hire, train, and equip the new employees.”

Of course, OIP simply ignored Civil Beat Law Center’s recommendations last year, so I suppose it’s something that it’s at least entertaining the possibility of these. And maybe that’s enough.

Although the public has the right to go to court without having to involve OIP, it is not necessary to hire attorneys or observe judicial formalities to obtain OIP’s assistance, and OIP’s free and informal proceedings are not subject to the contested case procedures of HRS Chapter 91.”

Then there’s the Civil Beat Law Center, an independent nonprofit organization funded by billionaire Pierre Omidyar (though it shares a name and two board members with the Honolulu news site Civil Beat, the Law Center is a completely different entity). It offers “free legal advice, and representation on a select basis, to members of the media and the public who need help with issues involving government transparency,” tries to create

The servers were sweet, and despite the wait, the customers all looked satisfied.

The prices are also very reasonable. $8.08 is a pretty good price point, and they also have a $6.75 “Kama‘aina” menu with a mixed plate of options.

It’s one of those things that’s only worth it if you have something really great in store, like a sunrise on Haleakala or an empty surf lineup. Last week, with friends visiting from out-of-town, we planned an early morning fishing trip.

It was fun, but a downside was that we were really, really hungry. By 9am, the

Apparently we weren’t the only people with that idea. Though I was under the impression that it was still sort of a secret, there was already a small crowd of locals and tourists waiting out in front of the glass doors, when we got there.

He now creates moving paintings, which will be on display at Lahaina Galleries during the event. His nature and abstract collections use audio and moving visuals to create an “immersive visual experience” that's unique and

strangely addictive. In “Another Day in Paradise,” aqua waves crash into a bay under a shifting sunset with the silhouette of a mountain behind and rain falling in the foreground.

'The Dark Crystal' Jim Henson’s classic, wild 1982 fantasy will have a special Maui screening ★★★★★ Rated PG / 93 Min.

im Henson had nothing to prove when he made The Dark Crystal.

In fact, as legacies go, his was already staggering. At that point in his career, having been the creative force behind Sesame Street , The Muppet Show and the still-magical The Muppet Movie, Henson came across like the cuddlier, wilder Walt Disney. Henson’s works encouraged not only support for children’s education but the notion of empathy and having a sense of humor about oneself.

While the arrival of Henson’s yearsin-the-making, surprisingly grim The Dark Crystal in 1982 seemed like a change of pace for him, it was also a master’s thesis on his ability in storytelling and characterization through puppetry. Many children of the 1980’s look back on The Dark Crystal as a scary, intimidating work, and, in the richest sense, it is.

In a world overcome by an oppressive darkness, the grotesque, vulturelike Skeksis reign supreme by controlling the all-powerful crystal of the title. Despite their use of spider/crab/ nightmare-inducing monsters called the Garthim to do their dirty work, the Skeksis fear a prophecy that a pure being, called a Gelfing, will over turn their world domination and bring light to their preferably drab existence.

The screenplay is Tolkien-inspired but uses The Lord of the Rings as a creative-jumping off point rather than a blueprint or outright copy. While

Willow (1988) was George Lucas’ blend of Star Wars and Tolkien, this is something altogether different. Henson is actually applying the optimism of the Flower Power Movement and how it contrasted with cynicism and the corrupt government. While the Gelflings are Hobbit-like and seek to alter a sinister force oppressing their world, this is actually a tale of earthy, spiritual hippies taking on the ruthless, uncaring bureaucrats.

If you’re willing to surrender to its gradual pace and vast strangeness, you’re in for a treasure chest of Jim Henson magic. The puppetry is extraordinary and the characters exhibit quirks and a soulfulness. Henson and co-director Frank Oz, as well as scores of gifted puppeteers, were working at the top of their craft.

Like any great fantasy or bedtime fairy tale, the villains are everything.

The Skeksis are vain, stupid, belligerent, withered and funny. There’s a hilarious, ghastly death bed scene where the elderly Skeksis greedily clings to his scepter, feebly struggling to stay alive, declaring, “Mine!” As a political allegory, the Skeksis are still a potent stand-in for any cluster of greedy, indifferent mean old bullies in power.

Four years later, Henson made Labyrinth, another puppet-infused fantasy, starring a then-unknown Jennifer Connelly and rock legend David Bowie.

Taking inspiration from Lewis Carroll, Labyrinth has musical numbers, a lot of British humor and is a far more accessible work than The Dark Crystal.

Willow but strong contenders like Legend, Return to Oz, Dragonslayer and The Never-Ending Story , Henson’s film has the edge in that everything we’re looking at is hand-made and articulated by unseen artists. There are admittedly some optical effects and matte paintings but really, Henson’s literal and thematic fingerprints are all over this one.

The imagery is often powerful: note the sad, stripped and pathetic Skekis Lord Chamberlin cowering in a corner.

There’s also Aughra’s astonishing globe room, the moving flashback of protagonist Jen being raised by the Mystics and the John Ford-like shot of the

Mystics marching against the sunset.

Then there’s the thrilling finale, which is somehow both bizarre and emotionally satisfying.

Trevor Jones’ majestic score adds an additional layer of wonder and excitement. It may be too much for those expecting the whimsy of Fozzie the Bear and not a good pick for the small fry. But if you and your keiki are old enough for Harry Potter, the works of Tolkien and never miss a movie about The Force, then this is one to experience and savor.

The Dark Crystal plays at the Maui Mall Megaplex on Sunday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2pm and 7pm. ■

Not to get all Matrix-y on you, but to me that points to it at least being possible that life is merely an insanely complex simulation or game. World of Warcraft, essentially, multiplied by a trillion trillion. I think you’d benefit from temporarily positing that my theory’s possible, because you’re taking life just a bit too seriously. Perhaps thinking of it as a kind of game (and one which you could start over, if you like) might help you relax so you could do what you’ve got to do. Try that, this week.

I have a friend in his late 20s who’s still never had a drop of alcohol or taken drugs not prescribed by a doctor. I ascribe to a different school of thought, one that values experience, but I still wouldn’t suggest he take up drinking or doping now, just as I wouldn’t tell a 30 year-old virgin to just hook up with a stranger and get it over with.

Once you’ve invested that much time in something–no matter how pointless it may seem now–it would be a shame to just blow it. You may be ready to move on with a big change. Don’t’ screw it up by not valuing where you’ve already been. If you’re a granny-virgin who’s over it, don’t just hook up with the first person who’ll have you. Among my friends, the ones who take it easy actually party more than the ones who consider themselves hardcore. Like a lot of my fellow keto-ers, it’s hard not to crow about something that’s brought so many positives to my life. Yet, I’m very careful not to use the word “should” here. Telling other people what they should or shouldn’t do won’t be helpful right now.

Just because something is so right for me doesn’t mean it’s right for someone else. These words resonating? Make them your mantra this week.

Like you, I’m not especially shy. If I’m interested in someone, I have no problem expressing it; my occasional problem, perversely, is taking an interest in anyone at all. That’s right, I can be a bit of a snob.

Don’t sneer; you can be, too. Call it “having standards,” if you want. There’s nothing wrong with that, only that your standards are too narrow. You should hold out to have only great people in your life. However, your concept of what “great” is has dramatically limited the kind of people you let into your life, to your own detriment. Because you feel everything so intensely, you put up a barrier between yourself and the world. Consequently, those “within your shell” get a completely different version of you than those stuck outside it, who often mistakenly consider you a bit shy and cold. It’d be sad if they walked away based on that inaccurate assumption. They’d be interested in the “real you,” if only they could see it; what they do so doesn’t intrigue them at all. I’m not suggesting you remove your protective shell entirely–but this week a revealing crack or chink might be in order.

You go out of your way to avoid playing emotional games. I admire your desire to be direct and candid.

Sometimes, however, a little song and dance before you cut to the chase might be a good idea. Flirtation and romance thrive on mystery, after all. It may be refreshing when someone lays their cards on the table, but it’s not terribly romantic. Don’t start lying, though.

I’m simply suggesting that exercising your powerful honesty isn’t always your best option. Sometimes– like this week–just keeping your mouth shut is the best thing you can do.

I went to a fake wedding party, in which everyone wore mock-up versions of the outfits they might wear to their actual weddings (there were a lot of tiaras). It was good fun, and it made me think of you; playing at marriage right now might be a blast (a lot more fun, actually, than the real thing would be).

In fact, this would be a good week to do a test run for whatever you’re thinking of taking on in the near future. You might find out you hate (or love) it.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

I live on the top floor of my elevator-less building; when I’m delivered a package, the guy who drops it off always gives me attitude, dramatically huffing and puffing as he comes up the steps and otherwise complaining about, you know, having to do his job. I feel for the guy, I do–but only to a point. It is, after all, what he signed up for when he filled out the job application and petitioned to deliver packages for a living. You’re getting exactly what you signed on for, too. You could’ve seen that exactly this would happen, before. Don’t bitch about it.

Everything has a season and all that. One of my friends contends that one of the most significant facets of life is timing, and one of the ones that’s least controllable. Nor should you venture out in such inclement (metaphorical) weather; doing what you want to do now will be just as impossible as turning soil while being pelted with fist-sized chunks of ice. In general, I believe in making your own moments, especially when there’s something unpleasant that you nevertheless must do. But in this case, waiting a while–at least until this storm has passed, for example–might be the best call.
