And the fact that a small band of Molokai residents prevented him from visiting their mostly rural island (its unemployment rate for October was 5.1 percent, the highest of any island in Hawaii) is just incredible.

“We’re a small community,” Walter Ritte told HNN. “Anyone with that kind of money to buy such a cruise ship could come here and take control of the whole island.”

You’d think that a handful of locals blocking the monster yacht belonging to one of the world’s most powerful tech investors from visiting the tiny island of Molokai might make headlines around the world, but I guess not. On the night of Friday, Nov. 24, Hawaii News Now reported that a group of Molokai residents, including longtime activist Walter Ritte, had succeeded in keeping the 195-foot yacht belonging to billionaire Yuri Milner from coming to their island.

“It’s unclear whether Milner wanted to dock or moor in Kaunakakai,” Hawaii News Now reported. “But he was quickly turned away after Molokai residents told him he was not welcomed. ‘We’re too small to have something as big as this.

Especially if it’s someone who has a lot of power because they have a lot of money,’ said Loretta [Ritte].”

Though the Daily Mail blogged about the incident on Nov. 25, no other media outlet seemed to publish the story. This surprised me, given Milner’s enormous power and wealth (The Maui News finally wrote about the incident on Nov. 29, the day we went to press).

The founder of the venture firm DST Capital, Milner is a Russian-born oligarch (he lives in a $100 million home in Los Altos Hills, California now) who’s tight with American oligarchs like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. In fact, Milner was an early investor in both Facebook and Twitter, though he sold his stakes in both companies in 2012 and 2013, respectively, after they went public.

Milner made tech headlines in the last few weeks after news revelations that tie Milner’s investors to stories of Russian government interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“Yuri Milner, Russian entrepreneur

and founder of venture firm DST Capital, counts Russian government-linked organizations VTB Bank and Gazprom among his investors,” Wired reported on Nov. 8.

“The news surfaced in a joint investigation of off-shore banking documents called the Paradise Papers this week. In Silicon Valley, Milner is best known for sizable early stakes in Facebook and Twitter, both of which have been drawn into investigations around Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 US election. But venture investors at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon say they don’t think Facebook or Twitter erred by not knowing the ultimate source of their investors’ money. Short of hacking an offshore bank to find DST’s financial records and the beneficial owners of the limited partnership, who could have known?”

Milner denies that he was working on behalf of Russia to influence U.S. elections.

“There are over three million self-identifying Russians living in America,” Milner said in a Nov. 5 Recode story. “Thousands work in Silicon Valley, including the founders of some of the most iconic American technology companies. Because many Russians have historically been drawn to science and technology, to be suspicious of anyone with connections to both Russia and tech firms is to cast a very broad net.”

“The groups initially became concerned when after careful study, it was determined many customers of these tour operators regular[ly] take up the beach access parking stalls of numerous hotels along Ka‘anapali Beach,” states the news release from Collins. “These public beach access parking stalls were required to be made available to the public to allow access for non-commercial recreational beach uses as a condition of developing or redeveloping their hotels. MAUI OCEAN CENTER HOSTS TOY DRIVE FOR NONPROFITS

extends beyond Trilogy Excursions. She sits on the board of two Maui organizations–Surfrider Foundation Maui and the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

This past summer, she took a brief sabbatical from Trilogy to help lead several groups of high-school aged students with Maui’s Ecology Project International; EPI works with The Nature Conservancy, Maui Cultural Lands, The Hawaii Wildlife Fund and Polanui Hiu Community Managed Marine Area to create research opportunities for visiting students.

Trilogy continues to focus on smaller changes that when operating six boats simultaneously can make a large impact. They converted one of their boats to biodiesel; they purchased reusable cups and eliminated single use plastics; they transitioned schedules, manifests and ticketing processes to paperless methods; they converted the corporate office to run on solar power; and they began educating guests on alternative sun protection options such as rash guards and started spreading the word about the importance of using reef-safe sunscreens; their Trilogy boats are now outfitted with complimentary reef-safe sunscreen for guests to use.

HAWAII ECOTOURISM ASSOCIATION HONORS TRILOGY EXCURSIONS Trilogy Excursions was named 2017 Tour Operator of the year by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association.

Trilogy’s Conservation and Education Director and First Mate, Magen Schifiliti, took home Tour Guide of the Year honors.

The award recipients were honored at the annual Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel.

The HEA honor recognizes the Hawaii ecotour operator who demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship, cultural sensitivity, community outreach, education and more. There are more than 100 businesses across Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Big Island that have chosen to go through the rigorous

This holiday season, the Maui Ocean Center will be a collection center for a toy drive that benefits Maui’s at-risk youth. The Ocean Center is teaming with Maui Pride, Maui United Way, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center and numerous other nonprofits to help make Christmas merrier for Maui kids of all ages.

“We are very grateful for the hard work and dedication demonstrated year after year by Maui’s nonprofit community,” said Elyse Ditzel, Maui Ocean Center’s Director of Marketing, “Every toy donated will be an opportunity to brighten a child’s holiday. We are honored to partner with these organizations and excited to be a part of this annual program.”

The Ocean Center placed donation bins at the park entrance on Nov. 19 and they will remain through Dec. 5; last year, the toy drive presented gifts to more than 2,000 children. The collection bins are accessible from 9am4pm. Donations of unopened, new gifts will be accepted including toys, games, sports gear, school supplies, and items appropriate for children and teenagers.

during toy drives; gifts for all ages are encouraged. “My favorite gifts for toy drives are arts and crafts sets,” said a Pride spokesperson. “They are suitable for all genders and they provide a creative outlet that I think is important for kids in need.”

Pride, United Way and Friends will distribute the gifts through a number of nonprofits to help reach a maximum number of children who are victims of abuse, neglect, economic hardship and other conditions.

Members of the Spann family of Comanche County, Oklahoma, keep running afoul of that state’s incest law, with the latest dustup over the marriage of 26-year-old Misty Spann and her 43-year-old mother, Patricia, in March 2016. The two had been separated after Patricia lost custody of her young kids, but when they resumed contact a few years ago, Patricia told investigators, “they hit it off.” KFOR reported that Patricia also married one of her sons in 2008, but two years later that marriage was annulled. Another son reported to KSWO-TV that Patricia tried to start an inappropriate relationship with him, but he shut her down. In early November, Misty received a 10-year deferred sentence and will serve two years’ probation. Her mother/exwife (their union was annulled in October) will be sentenced in January.

Sean A. Sykes Jr., 24, of Kansas City, Missouri, has discovered one way to avoid the justice system. Sykes was detained in a Sept. 1 traffic stop, but he denied any knowledge of the drugs and handguns found in the car, The Kansas City Star reported. As he was being questioned at the police station, the detective wrote in his report, Sykes was asked his address. In response, he “leaned to one side of his chair and released a loud fart before answering with the address.

Mr. Sykes continued to be flatulent and I ended the interview,” the detective wrote. Charges were not filed at that time, but Sykes was pulled over again on Nov. 5 and was in possession of marijuana, crack cocaine and a stolen pistol. He was in custody awaiting a bond hearing.

Since Twitter announced that it would allow 280-character messages rather than its original 140, a whole new world has opened up for the game-addicted among us.

Gizmodo reports that tweeters are using the expanded tweetspace to play board games such as chess, Connect Four, Shogi and Go. Games are even being customized; one tweet enthuses about “Marine biology twitter-chess.

With a new marine biology fact every time a piece is moved, and a scientifically accurate death scene when a piece is taken.” Uh, ok.

SWEET! Becky Reilly of Omaha, Nebraska, was forced to call in a roofing company after discovering thousands of honeybees had invaded her home’s attic, producing so much honey that it was dripping down the side of the house. “We heard a loud and rhythmic buzzing, and it was somewhat terrifying because we knew what it meant,” Reilly told KETV. Jason Starkey of Takoda Green Roofing said he removed about 40 pounds of honey on Oct. 26 before moving the bees and tackling the damage, which he called “horrible.” Local beekeeper John Gebuhr moved the bees to his garage, but he is pessimistic about their survival through the winter. But Reilly’s friends and neighbors are thrilled: They’re getting honey for Christmas!

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A loss prevention officer at a Vero Beach, Florida, Walmart happened to catch 25-yearold Cheyenne Amber West and another woman as they carried out some complicated maneuvers in the electronics aisle on Nov. 6. The officer told the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office that West and her friend chose a computer, video game controllers and other items worth a total of almost $2,000, then covered the bar codes with stickers taken from less-expensive clearance items. They then moved to the self-checkout lane, where their loot totaled just $3.70. “I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford,” West told officers. “The computer is for my husband. Since he just got me a Coach purse, I figured he deserved something nice as well.”

VOTING WOES Douglas Aaron Shuttlesworth, 34, was simply trying to exercise his civic duty when he reported to an elementary school in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to vote–on Monday, Nov. 6, the day before Election Day. Susquehanna Township police arrested Shuttlesworth for DUI after he appeared at the school intoxicated and admitted he had driven there to vote. The Associated Press reported that Shuttlesworth’s mother elucidated: Her son thought it was Tuesday.

An Indonesian museum, De Mata Trick Eye Museum in Yogyakarta, has been forced to remove an exhibit that encouraged visitors to take a selfie with a waxwork of Adolf Hitler. The figure, which stood in front of a giant image of the entrance to Auschwitz concentration camp, had been on display since 2014, and the museum said it was one of the most popular displays. Metro News reported that the museum originally defended the exhibit as “fun,” but when the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Los Angeles demanded its removal, the museum complied, taking it down on Nov. 10.

Joseph Vaglica, 40, of Edgewater, Florida, surprised a woman at her New Smyrna Beach home on Nov. 7 when, naked, he burst in through the garage door and ran through her kitchen “acting irrationally.” The homeowner dashed next door to her stepson’s house and called 911, reported the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Meanwhile, Vaglica helped himself to some of the woman’s clothes, then ran outside and started banging on the windows at the stepson’s home. When New Smyrna Beach police officers arrived, Vaglica was rolling around in the grass. Police said he was intoxicated; he was later charged with burglary with assault. ■

WHAT HAPPENED TO ACCOUNTABILITY?

An open letter to the Maui County Council on MPD’s new body cameras.

on’t we live in momentous, wondrous times? Futuristic technology seems everywhere right now. Earthorbiting satellites relay phone, television and internet transmissions, as well as tell you exactly where you’re standing. Pollution-free electric cars and trucks are now on our roads, while automakers are pushing the bounds of autonomous vehicles. Agile robots can now run, jump and even backflip. For just a few hundred dollars, a person can carry a personal computer connected to the internet in his or her pocket.

And a police officer can now carry out patrol duties while a small camera mounted on the front of his or her uniform silently records citizen interactions.

It’s this last bit of technological innovation that concerns me–or rather, it’s the Council’s lack of concern over the cameras that concerns me.

I don’t know if you realize this–and I’ve found no evidence that the Council does–but the Maui Police Department’s issuing of body-worn cameras to its patrol officers represents a revolution in law enforcement–in terms of both documenting crime and preventing police abuse. When first mentioned a few years ago, body cameras seemed to hold great promise for police accountability. For the first time, there would be an independent record kept of every time cops used deadly force, or just any force, on suspects.

camera as a possible tool for citizens to help bring bad cops to justice.

Now, as police departments across the country rush to attach cameras to their officers’ uniforms–and lawmakers like U.S. Senator Brian Schatz sponsor legislation to make that even easier–it’s clear that the dream of body cameras helping bring about citizen justice is just that–a dream. Police departments, including the one here in Maui County, are crafting body camera policies that help cops, but do nothing to strengthen accountability measures for citizens.

That’s because over the last three years, while the MPD was studying various cameras and technologies, there’s been virtually no public debate over the question of whether the department should get body cameras–and if they do, how they should use them. And now, just like that, a hundred or so cops are today patrolling Maui with cameras clipped to their uniforms.

This is how it went down when the MPD decided it needed an armored truck–the Bearcat.

And it’s what happened when the department asked for a tracked robot that can also carry explosives or even a gun. In both instances, the Council asked few questions about why exactly the MPD needed this kind of hardware, and what it would mean for the future of Maui County.

Way back in early 2016, during his annual State of the County Address, Mayor Alan Arakawa painted the MPD’s body camera program as a great advancement for citizens and cops alike.

“Our Maui Police Department continues to meet higher standards,” Arakawa said on Mar. 14, 2016. “By the end of the year MPD will be implementing body cameras for about 125 of its patrol officers. Although some see these cameras as a way to monitor the behavior of our officers, they are also a tool for law enforcement. Used correctly, we hope that the footage from these cameras can be used as evidence in court. Mahalo to Chief Tivo [Faaumu] for initiating this important community policing tool.”

Arakawa turned out to be optimistic on the timing–the MPD only began implementing its body-

camera program in September 2017. He was also, I suspect, entirely too optimistic about the cameras’ value for the community at large.

How police departments around the nation are using these cameras is becoming a great disappointment right now for those who advocate for greater protections for civil liberties.Yet as I searched through the online archives of the minutes of meetings of the County Council and its various committees in the last year, I found virtually no mention of the MPD’s body camera program.

In fact, I found exactly one mention of the cameras in the minutes of the Maui County Council Budget & Finance Committee (which, during budget time, is where top MPD brass usually describe their latest programs and acquisitions). The camera program was mentioned in passing at the Jan. 31, 2017 hearing, during testimony by MPD Lt. Scott Migita on a drone the MPD wanted. Councilmember Kelly King asked Migita how the money for the drone would come out of the budget.

Here’s the exchange:

I also reported a nauseatingly long list of incidences over the past few years of camera-equipped cops across the country who, for whatever reason, suddenly didn’t have a functioning camera when it came time for them to use deadly force (or even just any force).

Now a new report from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights–a coalition of more than 200 organizations across the country–states that most law enforcement agencies that are now using body cameras are doing so with policies that are completely incompatible with public accountability.

footage before they write incident reports, but does not allow citizens filing complaints to review any relevant body camera footage.

Okamoto also said the MPD will store all body camera footage–including that which isn’t currently relevant to any investigation–for five years. Okamoto also said the MPD currently does not have a policy–either for or against– the use of facial recognition technology to identify individuals who appear in all this new body camera footage. At least Maui PD says its body camera policy is available to the general public, though Okamoto added that anyone who wants to look at it must first file a written public records request under the state’s Uniform Information Practices Act–a needless requirement given how easy it would be to simply post the policy on the MPD website.

MR. MIGITA: Right. So as far as public input, it’s going to fall along the line of the body camera project. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the body camera project.

COUNCILMEMBER KING: I’m not familiar with it.

• Do you support the use of body-worn cameras by Maui Police Officers (Yes; No; or Unsure)?

• Do you feel safer knowing the police are wearing body-worn cameras (Yes; No; or Unsure)?

Given the fact that there’s been little to no public debate on the efficacy and dangers of police body cameras, it’s extremely difficult for Maui residents to answer the above questions with any degree of informed confidence.

Back in October, I reported that much of the “accountability” rationale for equip-

And that was it. Though the minutes clearly show that King told Migita she was not familiar with the body camera program, Migita just glanced over it and returned to the subject of financing the drone. If the Council or its committees ever took up body cameras again, I couldn’t find it in the minutes (I also recently asked a Council staffer if the Council had ever discussed the body camera project in detail, and the staffer couldn’t think of any instance).

The Maui Police Commission, which in theory provides direct oversight of the MPD, doesn’t seem to be any better. In their minutes for 2017, I could find just one mention of the the MPD’s body camera program, which came in the July 19 meeting. There, Deputy Chief Dean Rickard briefed the panel on the program. He told them the department had gotten 125 cameras from Axion and was currently installing the required hardware in the Wailuku, Lahaina and Kihei districts. He said the department’s plan was to have the cameras “on the road” by Sept. 1.

This is a huge problem, especially since the MPD itself is now–after going ahead with the program–asking citizens for their thoughts on body cameras. The department’s new Citizen Survey, released on Nov. 21, includes two questions on body cameras:

“As more police departments utilize body-worn cameras, they must not be taken as the last word for police accountability,” said Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference in a Nov. 14 news release. “Our scorecard shows that many police departments are failing to adopt adequate safeguards for ensuring that constitutional rights are protected, and our report shows that unrestricted footage review places civil rights and liberties at risk and undermines the goals of transparency and accountability. Without carefully crafted policy safeguards in place, there is a real risk that body-worn cameras could be used in ways that threaten civil and constitutional rights and intensify the disproportionate surveillance of communities of color.”

Though Maui PD isn’t included in this report, its policies are every bit as problematic.

All of this is troubling–especially the part about allowing cops to look at their camera footage before they write their incident reports.

“Without carefully crafted policy safeguards in place, there is a real risk that body-worn cameras could be used in ways that threaten civil and constitutional rights and intensify the disproportionate surveillance of communities of color,” states the Leadership Conference’s new report, which details how most of the 75 departments it surveyed do exactly what the MPD is doing. “Today, most major police departments that use body-worn cameras allow officers unrestricted footage review. Officers may review body-worn camera footage anytime they wish, including before and during the process of writing their initial incident reports. Even in cases where officers’ actions are most closely scrutinized, including after a controversial use-of-force incident, officers are often permitted to review footage before giving investigators an initial interview.”

The Leadership Conference report goes to great lengths to show why allowing police officers time to review body camera footage before they write their reports is bad for the general public. It’s worth quoting at length.

“Because watching body-worn camera footage can alter an officer’s memory of an event, doing so will likely taint what officers write in their reports,” states the Leadership Conference report. “This practice will make it more difficult for investigators, internal affairs, and courts to accurately assess what occurred and whether an officer’s actions were reasonable given what he or she perceived at the time. Unrestricted review policies undermine longstanding principles of procedural justice, violate the law enforcement community’s best practices for preserving eyewitness evidence, and threaten to erode community trust. These policies are antithetical to the primary purpose of bodyworn cameras: to enhance police transparency and accountability.

“Unrestricted footage review creates an illusion of accuracy because it produces a false impression about how much officers actually remember about an incident,” the report continues. “It makes officers’ memories appear to be more accurate, and thus more credible, than the memories of other eyewitnesses–which can distort how an independent factfinder, like a judge or a jury, might understand how an incident truly unfolded. In the worst cases, because of the inherent limits of body-worn cameras, unrestricted footage review allows officers to square their version of events to the footage, and potentially create false beliefs about what actually happened.”

According to The Leadership Conference, many police departments around the nation are adopting similar policies. Their survey noted that just four of the 75 departments they surveyed “expressly allow people who are filing police misconduct complaints to view all relevant footage.”

The Conference survey discovered that only seven of the 75 departments they looked at “place any limits on the use of facial recognition together with their camera systems.” Just 11 of the 75 departments “delete unneeded footage within six months of recording.” And, most disturbing, “No department reviewed requires its officers to always write incident reports before watching relevant footage.”

Not a single department. In fact, the Conference found that just “13 out of 75 departments place any restrictions on officer review of footage, primarily after serious use-of-force incidents.”

Just because most cities and municipalities around the country are allowing their law enforcement agencies to do this, that doesn’t mean Maui County should. Taxpayers in Maui County provide the money for the Maui PD, and its cameras. Considering that their faces will inevitably end up recorded on these cameras, shouldn’t their representatives in government have some say in how these are used?

supermarket item for many, Kapsalis believes their Greek yogurt is the best because of the simple, properly made ingredients. The secret to the yogurt is the imported honey. After tasting a spoonful of it, I was sold. Most of the imported ingredients such as the olive oils and honey can also be purchased to take home.

“As soon as you see ‘processed’ on the label, you know they put the worst stuff in it,” said Kapsalis. “Here at the Greek Oven, we take pride in the ingredients.”

The Greek Oven also offers a large array of sandwiches, paninis and wraps. There’s

I also tried the Moussaka. It’s a classic Greek dish that requires three days to prepare. The kitchen staff makes multiple trays everyday to keep up with demand. It has layered beef, eggplant and potatoes, all covered in a savory béchamel sauce and then baked in the oven. It’s filling and delicious.

Kapsalis and his team offer dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights. The dinner plates are still based on classic Greek recipes, but offered in a more traditional sit-down style, with a server doing

This looks good too Portuguese sausage, vegetarian wraps, burgers and even a Mahi pita. I tried the Lamb gyro, with Australian lamb. After baking in the oven for three hours with lemon, olive oil and oregano, they pull it out and it practically falls off the bone.

Then the meat is shredded and packed into a house-made pita, covered in tzatziki, local tomatoes and onions.

Most of the sandwiches can also be made into plate lunches with Greek style potatoes

he Greek Oven in Haiku is as close to eating in Greece as you can get. Adonis Kapsalis and his wife Santuzza moved to Maui to raise their children, but soon after decided that he could offer delicious food from his homeland.

The Greek Oven sources everything they can from local farmers. They also make their own bread and beef patties in house.

Their tzatziki sauce is house-made, but they import olive oil from Greece. Kapsalis’ mother, in Greece, also sends them fresh oregano for their recipes.

Kapsalis frequently walks through the restaurant, asking the customers how they’re enjoying their meals. During our interview, we were stopped by a couple from New York who wanted to express

nesthesia is a Kihei-based metal band that was formed by guitarist Ian Smith over 25 years ago. Formed in the 1990s, they eventually reached legendary status in the Maui metal community. Gone from the stage for two and a half years, they’ll soon return with a Dec. 2 show at Mulligan’s on the Blue.

second show. We had about eight hours notice. Promptly at 7:30pm, the band dropped the lights and the 10,000 fans thought we were Metallica going out on stage. It was a tough crowd–winning them over was one of our crowning achievements, for sure.”

Since then, the band has performed occasionally, working on their music whenever possible. A few of the band members have since focused on raising kids, but now with the children mostly grown, the band is making a comeback, dedicating their time to playing together and getting their second album finished.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to reconnect and recharge our batteries,” Katchadourian said. “We’ve never been at a better point in our lives to collectively do this, and we’re doing it on our own terms.”

After gaining notoriety and metal fandom on Maui, Anesthesia was picked for the opening slot of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1992 show on Oahu. A year later, the band opened for Metallica at the Blaisdell Arena in front of 10,000 fans.

In 1993, Metallica was touring for their Black Album, arguably the pinnacle of the band’s career. They played two shows in Honolulu, the first of which Katchadou-

joined the lineup, as did vocalist Russell Carbonell and bass player Ryan Sawtell.

“Being a Kihei-based metal band on Maui, as you imagine, wasn’t exactly the house music at the time,” said Katchardourian. The band had to look outside of the norm to find gigs, playing at places like Kalama Park and the old Maui High gymnasium.

“We were really challenged with venues, but we were packing them,” Katchadourian said. “In this independent gig period, we were riding the underground wave that turned out

'Coco' The new Disney/Pixar fillm will make you cry, but that’s a good thing ★★★★★ Rated PG / 109 Min.

he title character of Coco, the new Disney/Pixar CGI masterpiece, is the great-grandmother of Miguel, a young boy and the main protagonist.

Initially, it seems odd that the movie would be named after Miguel’s oldest living relative, who is depicted mostly sitting, barely moving and only somewhat aware of what’s going on around her.

As the film progresses, we learn about the profound bond between Miguel and Coco, which is what makes this unexpected triumph so endearing.

The Mexico-set tale centers on Miguel (voiced by 12-year-old Anthony Gonzalez), raised by parents who forbid him to play music. An involving back story provides hints as to why Miguel’s desire is to be a great guitarist, like the late, great Ernesto de la Cruz (voiced by a fantastic Benjamin Bratt), is blocked by his overly attentive guardians. As emotions reach a boiling point in Miguel’s home, he flees with Ernesto’s guitar and finds himself in the Land of the Dead, a spirit domain that exists on the other side of our known world, while the Day of the Dead takes place. Miguel seeks out Ernesto and befriends Hector (voiced by an excellent Gael Garcia Bernal), whose union with Miguel reveals multiple surprises.

A glimpse at the trailer led me to believe that Pixar was making an animated feature awfully similar to the gone and forgotten 2014 The Book of Life, which also took place in a Day of the Dead-inspired spirit world with talking skeleton characters. While Coco has a structure out of The Wizard of

Oz, the formula from last year’s triumphant Moana is also firmly intact: the young lead wants to go against family tradition but is held back by a strong-willed authority (here, Miguel’s grandmother is a stand-in for Moana’s father). On the other hand, a different family member (I won’t reveal who but the equivalent of Moana’s grandmother) encourages Miguel to seek the truth and pursue his dreams. The most important comparison Coco shares with Moana is how it celebrates the culture it depicts, avoiding stereotypes while weaving mysticism and folklore into a tale of personal discovery.

The greatest strength of Coco is its depiction of how music connects us to our past and those gone but never forgotten. For all the rainbow-colored beauty on display and richly designed characters

and settings on display, it’s the emotional climax of the film, between Miguel and Coco, that will likely seal the film’s legacy; this remarkable, quiet but emotionally charged sequence is among the most touching in Pixar’s history. I can’t remember the last time I heard a sold-out movie house of audiences openly weeping.

The three lead performances are excellent and bring great heart and many layers to their characters. This is one of the few rare, big budget studio films with a mostly Latino cast, including Edward James Olmos and Cheech Marin (though the end credits informed me that Pixar staple John Ratzenberger is also in there somewhere).

Sometimes the story drags its feet getting from one major incident to another.

Coco also could have used a little more

humor and a lot more songs. Considering how marvelous the original tunes are, this should have been a full-on musical.

Still, as I left the theater rubbing away tears, the things about the film I didn’t like seem fairly minor. Despite the Day of the Dead setting and the skeletal appearance of many characters, there’s a lot of heart and warmth in this one.

Coco is preceded by Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, a touching, calculated and (at 21-minutes) surprisingly long animated musical feature. If nothing else, it’s a sobering reminder to parents that, no matter how sick you are of Frozen, be warned: Frozen 2 is on its way, ready to take over the world and bludgeon us with more show tunes that we’ll be listening to for the next decade. ■
