INMATE DEATH AT MCCC Daisy Kasitati, an inmate at Maui Community Correctional Center, died in her cell on the afternoon of Oct. 12, Hawaii Public Safety officials confirmed on Oct. 13. As to how Kasitati died, officials would only say that “Her official cause of death is pending,” though foul play has already been ruled out.

Here’s the full statement on the death from Hawaii Department of Public Safety spokesperson Toni Schwarz: “At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC) staff responded to calls for an inmate found unresponsive in a cell.

Health Care staff began administering aid and called 911 Emergency Medical Services (EMS),” Schwarz wrote.

If you consume any sort of social media, this weekend you probably noticed the #MeToo hashtag or saw women posting the words “Me Too” on Facebook. Doing so signifies that the woman has at some point in her life been the victim of sexual harassment and/or assault. I really started to see the trend on Facebook pick up early Sunday evening, so I decided to do something small to measure how many women I know have experienced this.

Though I like to think that I know how serious sexual harassment of women is in society, and how little men actually do to rectify it, I wanted to do something tangible to let women know that at least one guy had listened. I decided that every time I saw a woman on my Facebook feed post “Me Too,” I would write “Thank you for sharing this.” I wouldn’t click “like” or post one of those dumb emojis–I would type out a complete sentence to show that I had read what they wrote.

A few women I saw post “Me Too” didn’t surprise me–we had previously talked and she trusted me enough to tell me what happened. But many other women who posted the phrase surprised me–I honestly had no idea what they had gone through. After I wrote “Thank you for sharing this” 15 times, I stopped counting.

And that was all on a Sunday night–there have been many more women come forward since then.

To be honest, the whole “Me Too” thing is backwards. Though it’s wonderful and brave of so many women to come forward with stories of how they were sexually harassed and/or assaulted, solving the problem requires positive action on the part of men, not women. It’s men who are doing most of the sexual assault in this country, and it’s men who need to stop it, much less acknowledge that it’s happening.

The whole damned country is infected with toxic masculinity that seems to be getting worse. On Oct. 16, I opened Twitter and saw Hawaii’s own Senator Mazie

Hirono talking about a new survey that showed nearly 40 percent of National Park Service (NPS) employees have been sexually harassed.

“This report confirms what we’ve known for some time–there is a pervasive culture of workplace harassment in the NPS,” Hirono tweeted. “Continued silence & inaction are unacceptable. We must provide oversight & resources to ensure NPS employees have a safe working environment.”

Sure, intense media pressure–spurred by many, many women coming forward–is finally crushing Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, whose actions are so loathsome and predatory that even he has admitted he has a problem. But what about President Donald Trump? The allegations of sexual harassment and assault from women against him are virtually the same as Weinstein’s, in terms of quantity and quality (they also date back years, to long before he won the presidential nomination). While Republicans are gleefully denouncing Weinstein–a longtime big money donor to the Democratic Party– they still loudly defend Trump.

Men need to stop doing this–believing one set of women because it’s politically expedient, while ignoring or insulting other women because what they say makes you uncomfortable. Then again, men need to stop doing all sorts of horrible behaviors–raping women, attacking women, insulting women, forcing sex on a woman even after the woman says no,

forcing sex on a drunk or sleeping woman, groping women, catcalling women, blaming women who get harassed or assault, rationalizing that women who dress a certain way are asking for sex, belittling or ignoring the need for better healthcare for women, refusing to give women equal pay and authority in the workplace and so on. Seriously–the list of shit men pile on women goes on and on and on. This is the society we’ve built, where everything I just described is just considered to be normal.

And I’ve probably forgotten a dozen things here, because I’m a guy who was raised in a society that values men’s leadership, thinking and priorities over women.

My understanding this doesn’t make me immune from its ugly effects. I said nothing when a guy I was hanging out with once boasted of having sex with a drunk woman who fell asleep. I’ve heard more than a few sexist, racist jokes in my life, and laughed like all the other men I was with. That I can

say those events are in my past doesn’t make me a hero–it just means I’m learning.

Men, like me, can always do better. We must do better. Because until we do, the endless sexual harassment that women everywhere have to deal with, often on a daily basis, will only get worse.

Navy during World War Two as an aviation machinist. After the war, he went to work at Western Airlines as an engine mechanic (which, his wife Sara told us, is where he got his famous nickname). It was while working at Los Angeles Airport in the late 1950s that Blackie and Sara met, and the married in 1960. They soon moved to Newport Beach, California, where they opened Blackie’s Boatyard in 1964.

MAUI OCEAN CENTER NOW USES PAPER STRAWS Maui Ocean Center continues its environmentally-friendly platform with the discontinuation of single-use plastic straws.

The Ocean Center’s Seascape Restaurant, Reef Cafe and Coffee Shack will now be using biodegradable paper straws exclusively.

It’s estimated that over 500 million single-use plastic straws are used and discarded daily in the United States. Given the lightweight non-biodegradable nature of plastic, straws that end up in the ocean, waterways, and outside of landfills pose a substantial threat to local wildlife.

Joining the Strawless Oceans Movement, Seascape Restaurant recently introduced Aardvark, The Original Paper Straw at all food and beverage venues throughout Maui Ocean Center. The Aardvark paper straws are both compostable

Sara Gadarian, the wife of the late Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian, is selling all of her husband’s old tools and machinery at the end of October. The sale is to raise money for the Blackie Gadarian Memorial Vocational Scholarship Fund at Lahainaluna High School.

Through his life, Blackie collected a huge variety of tools and equipment, much of which he used extensively on Maui.

“We made a railroad car for the Ka‘anapali Railroad in 1982,” Sara told me. “He did all the brass handrails for the grounds of the Hyatt Regency when it was built. He did a lot of fancy brass work for the Grand Wailea. He rolled rebar to make frames for umbrellas for the Hyatt.

dos and buildings, and stainless ladders for boats. He also made handrails for stairs for buildings to become ADA-compliant.”

Gadarian’s selling her late husband’s tools in 267 lots. Probably the most unique item on the sale list is a pink (it used to be bright orange) 7.5-ton high-lift Hyster forklift (pictured above, next to Blackie).

“The forklift was Blackie’s go-to tool for everything,” Sara said.

Other items include welders, grinders, sanders, drills, metal fabrication tools, a 60ton electric press, pipe-cutters, sledgehammers, jigsaws, hacksaws and thousands of fasteners (brass and stainless steel).

Blackie was a Maui treasure from almost the moment he and Sara arrived in Lahaina in the 1970s. Soon after they opened Blackie’s Boat Yard, Blackie’s Machine Shop and eventually Blackie’s Bar. After graduating from technical school in New York, Blackie served in the U.S.

The specialty Belgian Red Ale is brewed with KonaRed Hawaiian Coffee Fruit.

With its ruby red appearance comes a dark cherry fruit and dried figs aroma. The Motueka hops and a balance of four different malts provide an earthy flavor with notes of dark fruits and subtle Belgian esters, according to brewing supervisor Jon DuPont.

“For this release, we wanted to create a recipe that would let the coffee fruit shine through,” DuPont said. “At 5.6 percent ABV and staying low at 15 IBUs, I think we set the stage nicely for the dark fruit character to mix well with the esters coming from the Bastogne yeast. I think people will be pleasantly surprised at the great ruby coloring when they pour it from the can as well.”

Pilialoha Belgian Red Ale has been available on draft for a few months, but as of Oct. 13 consumers can pick up a six-pack

and biodegradable, taking approximately 30-60 days to decompose. Using non-toxic materials and ink, the straws are BPA and elemental chlorine free and are manufactured in the USA. In 2016, Seascape Restaurant was among the first wave of Maui restaurants to receive a platinum-level Ocean Friendly Restaurant Certification by Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaii, a Surfrider Foundation program recognizing restaurants that reduce plastic waste and implement ocean-friendly practices.

The transition to paper straws builds upon Seascape Restaurant’s commitment to minimizing impacts to local ecosystems and wildlife.

An anonymous bidder in the United States has purchased a pair of Adolf Hitler’s boxer-style underwear for about $6,700, according to auctioneer Bill Panagopoulos of Alexander Historical Auctions in Chesapeake City, Maryland.

The drawers, with a size 39 waist and “A.H.” embroidered on them, apparently were left in the Parkhotel Graz in Austria in 1938, Panagopulos told Metro News on Sept. 24. The seller was the grandson of the people who owned the hotel at that time. Panagopulos supposes the buyer will frame the underwear and hang them on a wall in his or her home: “It would be the most talked-about relic in the house.”

THE FARCE IS STRONG A black-and-white photo depicting the signing of the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1945 has prompted the recall and reprinting of Saudi social studies textbooks because it pictures Saudi King Faisal seated next to the Jedi master Yoda. The photograph was created

by 26-year-old Saudi artist Abdullah Al Shehri, who mixes pop culture icons into historic photographs. Shehri told The New York Times in September he inserted Yoda into the photo because he reminded him of the king. “He was wise and was always strong in his speeches,” Shehri said. “I am the one who designed it, but I am not the one who put it in the book,” he clarified.

Saudi education minister Ahmed al-Eissa apologized for the mistake, but the mystery of how the photo got into the book remains unsolved.

IT’S GOOD TO HAVE GOALS Octogenarians Ray and Wilma Yoder of Goshen, Indiana, have finally achieved a goal they set nearly 40 years ago: to visit every Cracker Barrel location in the United States. On Aug. 31, they checked off the last of 645 stops in Tualatin, Oregon, where they each received a Four-Star apron, the company’s highest honor. The Yoders once stopped at 10 Cracker Barrels in one day as they traveled up the East Coast. “I’ve always walked away feeling refreshed,” Ray Yoder told ABC News. “For two old people, we’re pretty fast moving.”

BRIGHT IDEAS The Detroit Red Wings’ new promotion commemorates the Joe Louis Arena, where the team played until this year, when they’re moving to a new rink. The Detroit News reported in September that fans who want to keep the old home ice close to their hearts and contribute to the team’s foundation can buy a small vial of limited edition “melted ice” taken from the arena’s surface (otherwise known as water) for $85. Only 3,000 vials have been produced; they are accompanied by a framed photo of The Joe.

SUPERHERO UNDERWEAR IS BIG, TOO Even Superman underwear couldn’t protect Nathan French, 19, from Halewood, Merseyside, England, as he climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Wales, 3,600-foot Snowdon. French managed to hike to the summit on Sept. 9, but he quickly succumbed to the elements–perhaps because he was wearing ONLY Superman underwear, shoes and gloves. French, who is studying sport, nutrition and health in college, told The Guardian, “It was when I was at the top I was shaking uncontrollably.”

He rode the Snowdon mountain railway back down, but fell ill on the train: “I started to go deaf and my sight started to go funny.”

Paramedics said his blood sugar had dropped and he was showing signs of hypothermia.

Miles Hill of the Llanberis mountain rescue team noted, “We hope Mr. French is back in the mountains soon, perhaps in the full suit (cape optional), rather than just the underwear.” ■

If you are looking for breathtaking views and epic sunsets, a romantic diner or farm-to-table cuisine, maybe it’s the entertainments, live music, DJs, trivia and game nights, karaoke and open mic nights and dancing, there’s a place for you–no matter where you are on Maui. Repeated To Death ‘Happy Death Day’ is a real letdown ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 96 Min.

J

essica Rothe stars as Tree Gelbman, an obnoxious college student and sorority member who makes a daily habit of being as rotten as possible to everyone she crosses paths with. One night, she’s murdered by a masked assailant... only to wake up the next day, and find the exact thing keeps happening, over and over again. Tree struggles to figure out the who and why of her situation but never bothers to ask whether Punxsutawney Phil has spotted his shadow.

Happy Death Day is a real letdown, as it never fully commits to either the horror or comedy genre but still thinks it’s more clever than it truly is. Director Christopher Landon (son of TV legend Michael Landon) and X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Scott Lobdell have a solid gimmick to play with and fumble almost immediately. It feels off from the start, as every scene is brightly lit and as tonally chipper as a Pitch Perfect installment.

Once it gets to the horror scenes, the stalk n’ slash sequences are as glib and by-the-

book as a lesser Scream sequel.

The problem isn’t the PG-13 rating but how this is clearly most comfortable when striving for laughs. Landon’s film comes across as artificial when it’s trying to be sincere and forced when it’s trying to be funny. It doesn’t help that the movie’s trailer is a perfect abbreviation, preferable to sitting through this, and features a spot-on 50 Cent tune that isn’t in the movie.

There are good bits, like a cool transition after an explosion, the birthday music box, the clever set up for the killer’s mask and a moment where a text message distracts from a murder. The score by Bear McCreary is better than you’d find in most slasher movies and the end credits are fun. I also liked how Tree’s one night stand has posters for They Live, Repo Man and Mystery Science Theater 3000–The Movie in his dorm room.

Every bad movie has an irredeemable moment and this one permanently shoots itself in the foot during a comedic montage: Tree’s many attempts to overcome her killer and understand the logic of her predicament include jokey, illogical bits I won’t describe. This portion

insults its audience and derails an already indecisive tone. Not helping matters is that most of the characters are obnoxious stereotypes, and there are especially mean-spirited moments directed towards Asians and homosexuals.

Here’s another thing that made me really angry: Happy Death Day waits until literally the very last scene to halfheartedly address Groundhog Day in the most condescending way imaginable.

Look, Groundhog Day isn’t the first to portray a “time loop,” as Philip K. Dick’s great short story “A Little Something For Us Tempunauts” covered it in 1975, as did the 1990 short film, 12:01PM (it’s on YouTube–look it up. It’s brilliant). Source Code and Edge of Tomorrow recently and successfully explored the idea in strictly

sci-fi terms. The potential for this slasher comedy with a sci-fi novelty stops after the clever tweak on the opening Universal logo. Lobdell’s multiple endings seem less like a narrative gotcha and more of poor test screenings demanding additional, better endings.

Rothe (who next appears in the title role of a musical film adaptation of Valley Girl) works hard in the lead but fails to make the oddly named Tree sympathetic or endearing. Tree’s journey to redemption rings false–note how her putting things right in the end only demonstrates what a jerk she still is!

What the filmmakers clearly don’t get is that Tree isn’t the hero of Happy Death Day and that, as in any lesser teen horror movie, we’re rooting for the killer to

A little bit of dysfunction is natural with any group of people, especially if they come from many different backgrounds and perspectives. While I admire your diplomatic instinct and your determination to smooth over and resolve any conflict, I’m afraid you might be too driven in this regard. Not every clash of wills or difference of opinions has to be moderated and addressed.

Sometimes people have to hash it out on their own, and they won’t appreciate you getting in the way of that. This week, work on recognizing when your input is desired, and when people would rather you simply butt out.

Your life is like a beach town. There are months when it’s bustling, packed to the gills with people on vacation, eager to have a good time. Unlike a beach town, though, it’s sometimes hard to predict when the peak season is due, since there are practically no external signs (like nice weather). Not this time, however. People want to believe in ghosts, UFOs, and yeti (and astrology, for that matter), and do, despite having little to no tangible proof that they’re real. I believe we have a hunger for mystery and wonder in our lives; they’re as essential as water and as satisfying as chocolate. What looks like depression is often actually acute wonder-deprivation. When people don’t have enough mystery in their lives they end up shuffling dully through a grey doldrums that’s hard to escape from. Is your world feeling a little lackluster?

Parents who diligently keep their kids perfectly safe and sated often end up with boring, entitled kids. Children who’ve suffered hardship and risk are more likely to become motivated, generous, rugged, and inspired.

It’s hard to not protect those you love from every bit of hurt they might suffer, but it’s important to let them stick their hands in the flame once in awhile. Pain tempers people, and teaches them how to properly dream (I’ve met more than one pampered child whose greatest aspiration was to become a manager). This week, please keep that in mind. When it comes time to stand between someone and some kind of pain that might actually be good for them, please step aside.

Some people’s Achilles’ heels are more obvious than others. When someone has an addiction to alcohol or abusive partners, it’s easy to spot–though figuring out what to do about it is frequently still a quandary.

Other personal weaknesses are more subtle and subversive. This week, however, you have the unique perspective that puts you in a position to help someone resist or get a handle on their failings. This week, someone teetering on the brink of succumbing to their internal darkness might reach out a hand that only you can grab. Therefore please stay alert, keep your center of gravity low, and don’t let them fall.

Some people confuse being vulnerable with being weak. They see you sensitive, impressionable Fish as feeble because you have a hard time shielding yourself from the world. The reality is that for the most part that’s made you stronger, even if it doesn’t always look that way. Someone who puts up walls between themselves and the parts of the world they don’t like is only fine until something knocks down the walls. Then they fall apart. Even though to some eyes you seem perpetually on the brink of falling apart, you never quite do. That, as we both know, is strength. This week, help someone who’s judged you wrongly see it that way, too.

This week, kiss people’s scars. Cherish them for having suffered and still being able to hope, dream, and love. Everyone’s endured mountains of hurt; every beam of light they can allow to shine past all that occluding emotional scar tissue is a kind of miracle. Remember that.
