These guys don't care for oxybenzone

MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL TALKS OXYBENZONE Earlier this year, the Hawaii state Legislature took up a few bills that would have addressed sunscreen containing oxybenzone, a chemical that both helps humans prevent skin cancer but also may harm coral reefs. SB 1150 would have required “the University of Hawaii to conduct a study on the effects of sunscreen on Hawaii’s coral reefs and report to the Legislature.” HB 600 and HB 818 banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone.

All three bills died in committee, despite some pretty damning testimony from the state Department of Health (DOH).

“The Department of Health is concerned about the release of chemicals, including oxybenzone, from personal care products into the marine environment,” stated the DOH’s Feb. 3, 2017 testimony. “Research by local and national coral experts have shown that levels of oxybenzone in the marine environment may be high enough to pose deleterious effects on coral, and may exacerbate coral bleaching. However, oxybenzone plays an important role in reducing the risk of some forms of skin cancer, so balancing public health protection is a very important consideration. DOH believes more evaluation of the health and environmental impacts of restricting the use of oxybenzone are warranted. In addition, we are not aware of any impending federal or state regulations to remove this chemical from sunscreens. A key concern to be resolved is the availability of safe and effective alternatives, for example, sunscreens containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles are alternatives to oxybenzone. However, titanium dioxide has been classified as a possible carcinogen when

inhaled in high doses. Additionally, when zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles wash off skin, they enter the aquatic environment, with unknown effects on our tropical marine ecosystems.”

On Aug. 8, 2017, the Maui County Council meeting included talk on Communication No. 17-316, initiated by Councilmember Elle Cochran. That item related “to Oxybenzone and its effects on the environment.”

According to Cochran’s office, there isn’t any proposed legislation yet, but staffers are working on something that would focus on the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone. The actual communication attached to the agenda was just a singlesentence letter from Cochran to Council Chair Mike White, dated July 5.

“May I request the matter relating to Oxybenzone and its Effects on the Environment be placed on the next Council meeting agenda,” Cochran wrote.

In an effort to end the Maui County Prosecutor’s five-year campaign to bust MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo for photographing two Maui Police Officers on a public road (the county says he was “failing to comply” with the officers, but that’s BS to mask the fact that he was photographing cops on a public road), Russo’s attorneys Ben Lowenthal and Sam MacRoberts asked the Hawaii Supreme Court to hear their case.

After all, District Court Judge Kelsey Kawano had tossed the case out in 2014 on a procedural matter and the state Legislature passed a law making clear that photographing cops in public is legal. But when the Intermediate Court of Appeals (ICA) ruled in March of this year that Judge Kawano should not have tossed the case, it seemed like the whole travesty would go on forever.

In late June, Russo’s attorneys asked the Supremes two questions: • “Did the Intermediate Court of Appeals gravely err by vacating the dismissal order when the record clearly established there was no probable cause to bring the charge of obedience to a police officer against Mr. Russo?

• “Did the ICA gravely err in failing to review and examine if the prosecution against Mr. Russo violated his constitutional right to record the police conducting a traffic stop before vacating and remanding the case to the lower court?

On Aug. 1, the five justices of the Hawaii Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, and will schedule oral arguments. No word yet on when that will happen, though.

JUDGE GRANTS 10-DAY STAY ON MAUI LANI SAND REMOVAL In a lawsuit filed last week to stop Maui Lani Partners from excavating any more sand–and potentially disturbing the Kakanilua battlefield, which took place in Central Maui’s sand hills–Judge Joseph Cardoza has granted a 10-day stay, stopping all sand-removal activities

“IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that for a period of ten days, beginning with the day and time upon which this order is entered, defendants MAUI LANI PARTNERS, a domestic partnership, and its agents, employees, and all persons acting under, in concert with, or for them to refrain from any further sand mining, grading or excavation at lands located in the Maui Lani Project District in the ahupua‘a of Wailuku, Central Maui,” states the order.

Cardoza listed four reasons for his decision: 1. Plaintiffs are likely to prevail on at least one of their claims.

2. Plaintiffs will suffer “irreparable injury” should sand mining continue.

3. Maui Lani Partners is already subject to a county warning on sand mining.

4. “The public interest will be served by the entry of this stay order.”

Malama Kakanilua and group members Clare H. Apana and Kaniloa Kamaunu–represented by attorney Lance Collins–filed the suit against Maui Lani Partners in Maui Environmental Court back on July 28.

“It has been over ten years, we have been asking Maui Lani Partners and state entities to protect the ‘iwi kupuna, these ancient burials of the sandhills of Maui,” said Apana, a cultural practitioner and founding member of Malama Kakanilua, in a July 28 news release from Collins.

Maui Lani Partners officials insisted in a July 29 The Maui News story that they haven’t removed any materials since May 1.

“Contractor HC&D and Maui Lani Partners stopped moving and transporting sand May 1 after receiving a county notice to correct violations,” The Maui News reported. “The county says that the developer’s grading permit was not in dispute, but that the excavation and exportation of high-quality sand for concrete and other uses meet the definition of ‘resource extraction,’ which requires other permits.”

The next hearing on the matter will be 8am on Friday, Aug. 11.

CORRECTIONS First the easy ones: In last week’s cover story “Maui’s Aloha ‘Aina Ambassador” (Aug. 3, 2017), we forgot to mention that Darren Williams took the awesome cover photo of Pat Simmons, Jr. We also erred in identifying the location of Simmons’ family farm: it is, in fact, in Haiku.

The new MAPA board

The Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) inducted its new board officers for 2017-2018 on July 18.

Dr. Virginia Cantorna was inducted as president, Mason Williams as vice president, Marion Haller as treasurer and Linda Howlett as secretary. The board recognized and thanked outgoing board treasurer Cate Bellafiore.

Newly elected board members include Tom Hallagan, Satisha Smith, Sara Patton, Mason Williams and Lou Young.

They join current board directors Herman Andaya, Robert DeVinck, Rochelle Dunning, Lisa Mosbarger, Donna Nabavi and Kristina Shugars.

The board’s major focus for the upcoming year is to refurbish the property that was purchased on Main Street to create a permanent home theater and to accommodate the space needed for MAPA’s growing educational programs.

The 2017 Festivals of Aloha committee is seeking contestants for the 16th Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Ki‘eki‘e Falsetto Contest. Applicants who are at least 18 and have not released a recording for sale are eligible to apply; contestants will be judged on the following criteria: vocals/music, Hawaiian language and overall presentation.

The deadline for applications is Sept. 1.

A Maui music tradition, champions have gone on to release their own albums and carry Uncle Richard’s hopes for the continuation of Hawaiian music. “Every island had a falsetto contest except for Maui,” Ho‘opi‘i said. “I was honored when the committee asked to name the contest after me. It’s my kuleana.”

Presently, Maui is the only island with a falsetto contest. The rest of the state has retired their contests and have transitioned to concerts or ho‘ike due to challenges like finding contestants and funding.

At the event, Ho‘opi‘i will be joined on stage by his ‘ohana and will pay tribute to his band mate and Maui treasure, the late Sheldon Brown.

NOAA GIVES UH MONEY FOR OCEAN RESEARCH The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will award $1,380,554 to the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to support ongoing research on key marine species in the Pacific Ocean, including the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

The new funding for ocean research was announced on July 27 by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“As the pace of climate change continues to accelerate we need to monitor the results of our conservation efforts—and we must also have science-based tools to predict how climate change will impact populations of endangered species and commercial fisheries,” said Schatz in a July 27 news release.

“This funding will help the University of Hawai‘i take climate change into account when forecasting how ahi tuna, endangered sea turtles, and monk seals will fare in the future. The better we understand how our actions will affect wildlife and natural resources, the better choices we can make to protect the oceans we depend on.”

The Falsetto Contest will be held Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel.

Doors Open at 5:30pm, Contest begins at 6:30pm. Admission ($60) includes buffet dinner, festival ribbon and entertainment.

The theme of the 2017 contest is Aloha ka Ho‘i a ka Holokahiki–“beloved is the sailors’ return home.” Festivals of Aloha is joining in the celebration of the return of Hokule‘a and Hikianalia, the Polynesian voyaging canoes that sailed across the world’s oceans.

If you visit Dawson City in Canada’s Yukon Territory, you can’t skip one of its famous traditions: sipping on a Sourtoe Cocktail at the Sourdough Saloon. Demit Strato of New York took to Facebook on June 26 from his throne room to excoriate his local Starbucks for making his venti iced coffee with regular milk instead of soy milk, as he ordered it. “I’ve pooped 11 times since the A.M. My bottom hurts from all the wiping. Do you think I enjoy soy milk?... I don’t order soy milk because I’m bored and want my drink order to sound fancy. I order soy milk so that my bottom doesn’t blast fire for 4 hours.” For its part, Starbucks sent Strato a $50 gift card, and he told Buzzfeed that “many women are trying to go out on a date after this, too.”

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US A China Southern Airlines flight between Shanghai and Guangzhou was delayed for five hours on June 27 after an 80-year-old passenger, identified only as Qiu, was spotted tossing coins into the engine as she boarded “to pray for a safe flight.” Passengers already onboard were asked to deplane while crews searched inside the engine and around the area, ultimately finding nine coins totaling the equivalent of about 25 cents. Local news outlets estimated the cost of the delay and the search at $140,000.

A California man’s 2,000th visit to Disneyland in Anaheim on June 22 made him a celebrity in the park. Jeff Reitz began visiting Disneyland every day after receiving an annual pass as a gift in 2012. At the time, he was un-

employed, but he continued his habit even after finding a job, using the $1,049 Disney Signature Plus Passport. “Until today, cast members would think I looked familiar, but now they know who I am,” Reitz said. “It’s been positive, it’s been a motivator, it’s been my workout gym. GREAT ART! Police in St. Petersburg, Florida, were hunting in late June for the artist tagging buildings with butt cheeks. POLICE REPORT A SWAT team from the Sumter County (Florida) Sheriff’s department raided The Villages retirement community on June 21, uncovering what they believe is a golf cart chopshop operation, along with illegal drugs, in the sprawling complex near Ocala. Souped-up golf carts are a popular way to get around in the community, which is home to more than 150,000 people. Windshields, seat cushions, wheels and tires were found in the garage, along with drugs “in plain sight” in the home, Deputy Gary Brannen said. Five people, ranging in age from 38 to 63, were arrested.

ODD HOBBIES The Wall Street Journal reported in June on a small group of enthusiasts who participate in the esoteric sport of container spotting–discovering and documenting unusual shipping containers. Spotting a distinctive box “is analogous to the satisfaction that bird-watchers get from spotting a very rare breed of bird,” noted Matt Hannes, who maintains the Intermodal Container Web Page. Unusual boxes, known as unicorns, include those with outdated names or logos, or sporting discontinued colors, and those from very small shipping companies. Charles Fox of Indianapolis may be an extreme hobbyist: On his honeymoon, he spent two 12hour days taking photos of a variety of boxes in Belgium. Mrs. Fox was not amused.

Officers Bob Lynch and Lincoln Anderson agreed and moved Thompson’s handcuffs from his back to his front so he could put the ring on Leandria Keith’s finger. IN AMERICA AND ON MAUI IN 2017

W

hen MauiTime asked me to write an article on transrights and transphobia, it sent thoughts racing through my head at light speed. There’s so much happening in and to our Trans community in the summer of 2017 and most of it is a clear and present danger to who we are not just as citizens, but as human beings.

Backtracking a bit, when I began my transition 10 years ago I set up Google alerts to send me transgender news daily. I might receive three to five emails a week. Now, I average 20 to 25 emails daily. This is because our presence as a community has grown, as well as our acceptance. Yet, it is still an uphill battle because a great deal of these news stories I receive are filled with sadness, prejudice, rejection and violence (including murder). Last year there were 26 murders nationally of Transgender people, mostly Trans women of color. We’re on track this year to surpass this number.

So please believe me when I say that transphobic America is not just confined in the conservative, right wing, red states of our country (although it’s more pronounced there). It exists right in our own backyard here in Hawaii.

In this article, I want to break down what I see as the attack on all sides that we as transgender Americans are facing

today; from the segregated bathroom bills of Texas; to the ban on transgender service in the military by President Donald Trump; to loss of protections under Title VII; to lack of acceptance in Hawaii. By the end of this article I hope you’ll see how our community is in need of your compassion, your love and your assistance as a supporter and an ally to our future.

TRANSPHOBIA IN THE BATHROOM Just last summer, a fear swelled throughout Hawaii when the state Department of Education (DOE) announced their Transgender Guidance policy on transgender students. I had friends who are parents suddenly posting in social media their fear for their daughters that men would now be able to come into the girl’s rooms if they felt like they were a girl on any particular day.

This is the modus operandi of fear that’s used most commonly against our transgender community, implying that being transgender is similar to a choice you make like, “Do I have cereal or eggs for breakfast?” The only choice involved is resolving to live in the gender that you know you were born as in your mind, heart and soul. The fear also implied that actual trans Male to Female (MTF) students were just boys in girls clothing, which is absolutely wrong!

This policy went into effect at the onset of the 2016 school year. In fact, Kauai School Superintendent Bill Arakaki was quoted in The Garden Island last January as saying, “Our students have been great.

They really understand their classmates and what they’re going through and they really work together on campus. The community and students accept their peers and what each person says. We’re in Hawaii; we’re in a melting pot.”

On the other side of the coin, on Oahu, a transgender teacher (whose name I will keep anonymous at their request) felt not enough has been done yet.

“Some schools have not really implemented the policies and there is no accountability,” the teacher said. “While students seem to be able to use the bathroom of their presenting gender, I think there needs to be a task force that reviews all schools and keeps them accountable to the guidelines.”

While our state is working in a positive direction to assist our trans youth, Texas seeks to isolate and potentially harm them. Led by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, the Texas legislature was called back into special session after the regular legislative session failed to pass Senate Bill 6. The essence of this bill is to require transgender individuals to use bathrooms in public schools, government buildings and public universities based on, “biological sex.” The measure

would also preempt local nondiscrimination ordinances that allow transgender Texans to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

Despite passionate testimony from several trans-adults, children and parents of transgender children, the bill was passed in the Texas Senate 21-10 and is currently being discussed in the state House.

A strange ally to the Texas transgender community is big business. As we know, money talks in America and major companies such as Shell, Exxon, Apple, Microsoft, American Airlines and IBM, to name a few are against the bill. Their fears are well documented as North Carolina’s HB2 (a similar transgender bathroom ban cost the state millions in revenue) which included PayPal canceling plans for a $2.6 billion facility, NCAA and NBA cancellations of playoff games and the All-Star games and several conventions and concerts were additionally cancelled. If Texas passes the ban, the estimated economic cost (according to the Texas Association of Business) will be $8.5 billion in GDP and an estimated 185,000 jobs.

Personally, I feel if the bill becomes law I’d love to see transgender men (female to male, FTM), with birth certificate in hand, go as a group into the women’s rooms to use the bathroom.

This would prove the ridiculousness of this legislation to all concern.

Yet the real loss, in my eyes, is to the transgender children themselves.

They will suffer from rejection, bullying and possibly death by suicide. This is the real danger substantiated by a 2016 study by the National Institute of Mental Health. They found that suicidal thoughts and attempts by trans-children were significantly related to, “Perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness.” It’s no wonder that our nation’s transphobia has led to a 40 percent suicide attempt rate (the national average) of transgender individuals.

TRANSGENDER IN THE MILITARY On July 26 of this year, Trump tweeted, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow...... .Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming..... victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

This backlash against our 15,000 transgender military service men and women set off a firestorm of outspoken anger and frustration from military personnel followed by great support from allies. Hawaii Attorney General Douglas Chin led the way on July 27 with a letter to the U.S. Senate and House Armed Services Committees, supported by 18 other attorneys general, that expresses opposition to Trump’s ban. “The decision to oust honorable, well-trained, and patriotic service members based on nothing but their gender identity is

of our community as patriots and Americans who are just as willing and able to serve their country as anyone else is.

TITLE VII PROTECTIONS Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act “prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.”

For years, LGBTQ employees lost cases trying to cite this protection under the definition of “sex.” Then in 2012, a transitioning transgender woman changed the game.

Presented as a complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the case of Macy vs Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) determined that Mia Macy was discriminated against be-

cultural and social aspects associated with masculinity and femininity.”

Based on this ruling, transgender individuals have won many discrimination cases in the public sector. It also led to a 2015 EEOC ruling that made clear that discrimination based on sexual discrimination is illegal. But now, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said–on the same day Trump announced his transgender military ban, in fact–that Title VII does not protect employees based sexual discrimination.

Clearly, this is yet another battlefront arising from prejudice and stigma. It’s especially distressing because President Barack Obama was such a forward thinker and man of compassion for American citizens. It further denigrates us as second class citizens, in the same other

cause she was transgender. According to the EEOC, “as used in Title VII, the term ‘sex’ ‘encompasses both sex–that is, the biological differences between men and women–and gender.’ As the Eleventh Circuit noted...

Title VII barred ‘not just discrimination because of biological sex, but also gender stereotyping–failing to act and appear according to expectations defined by gender.’ As such, the terms ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ are often used interchangeably to describe the discrimination prohibited by Title VII. That Title VII’s prohibition on sex discrimination proscribes gender discrimination, and not just discrimination on the basis of biological sex, is important. If Title VII proscribed only discrimination on the basis of biological sex, the only gender-based disparate treatment would be when an employer prefers a man over a woman, or vice versa.

But the statute’s protections sweep far broader than that, in part because the term ‘gender’ encompasses not only a person’s biological sex but also the

undiluted discrimination and therefore indefensible,” states the letter. “We urge this newly announced policy be immediately reversed.”

U.S. Senator John McCain, R–Arizona and Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, rejected Trump’s statement.

“There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military–regardless of their gender identity,” he said.

“We should all be guided by the principle that any American who wants to serve our country and is able to meet the standards should have the opportunity to do so.”

In regards to the tremendous costs that the President was referring to, it amounts to about $8.4 million a year, or roughly 0.017 percent of the nation’s defense budget. It’s well documented that the military spends five times that amount on Viagra. I suppose the only real “hard on” here is against transpersonnel by Trump himself.

Addressing readiness to perform and serve, perhaps the president should know transgender troops have been serving since the Revolutionary War. Robert Shirtliff served with the Continental Army and was wounded in battle on multiple occasions. While being medically treated for a wound in battle, it was discovered that Robert was really Deborah Sampson, and was thus discharged. Eventually she received a military pension, and her readiness for combat was never at question.

Furthermore, Trump’s own military commanders were caught off guard by the announcement. The Pentagon was still investigating the impact of trans service readiness, which was not due out until December. In fact, the Rand Corporation had already reported in a study that transgender military personnel posed no threat to our military readiness. Additionally, 56 retired generals, admirals and senior military officers signed a letter sent to the president stating a transgender ban would be disruptive and degrade the readiness of all troops.

In the polls, 58 percent of Americans are against the ban. Those who are in favor of it buy into the false notion of stigma, as Trump does, that a transgender individual is somehow lesser than a normal military service person. This is simply not true. Trans military personnel are as well-trained, well-disciplined and ready for combat as anyone else in their unit. Transgender service members fill several critical military positions and retaining these individuals is not a weakness to our military readiness.

While I never served in the military, Robyn Walters, a transgender woman from Kihei has. Walters is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy and a retired Lt. Commander. “There is no time for bigotry in today’s Armed Services,” she said. “Transgender service members should not have to hide and lie, but should be able to freely serve our country.”

It’s my hope that Trump’s ignorance and bigotry will lead to further understanding

forms of discrimination did to other Americans over our nation’s history.

TRANSGENDER IN HAWAII Those of us who are Mahu (historically a third gender designation in Hawaiian culture, now used as slang for transgender) in Hawaii face may challenges and stereotypes in regards to acceptance.

I love it on Maui because Hawaii is more forgiving and progressive towards us because of the Aloha spirit, but we’re still not always accepted by family, friends, classmates, co-workers and clergy.

I want to share with you the perspective from some fellow trans sisters and brothers. I asked each of them to share with me their biggest concerns in regards to being Mahu in Hawaii.

Their answers are honest, candid and sadly true:

[Transgender teacher and advocate] “We have about 1.4 million transgender people in America with 9000 in Hawaii (number one per capita). I think that the bathroom bills that disallow transpersons to use the bathroom that aligns with their presenting gender puts thousands of people at risk for being harmed, especially trans women.

“I also feel that discrimination that student athletes face is also horrible.

Student athletes should be allowed to compete in athletics that align with their gender identity.”

Punahele Marie Ho‘opi‘i [Social worker with the Judiciary] “My biggest fear is that my son will grow up ashamed of me because of how society perceives Mahuwahine.”

In closing, I want to ask all of you in our Maui community to support our transgender population on Maui and in Hawaii, especially the children. They are the bravest and the most susceptible of all of us in regards to lack of acceptance and potential for bullying or harm. It has been my experience in my 40 years here on Maui that we have some very wonderful and accepting folks who live here.

I know many social service agencies and have worked with several of them personally. They are supporting our transgender community. To the rest of you, I ask that you do not sit on the sidelines in the face of discrimination–stand up and be counted! Remember, an idle bystander can be just as dangerous as a bully.

“If you like cookies and cream you will like the #5 with milk tea, crushed Oreo, vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup with boba. Or you can create your own. We have a father and son in here twice a week and they create these complicated strange concoctions. It always throws me. They sit there and play checkers.”

If you look to the left of the register they have a menu called Top Stirs, those are the top 12 boba tea concoctions that are already tried and true. The strawberry bomb has strawberry black tea, condensed milk and strawberry jelly. The “jelly” on the menu are like little cubes of firm Jello type bits you can have in your tea, as opposed to boba. Then there is the “popping”-little molecular gastronomy derived balls of sweet flavors, lychee, mango, strawberry, etc.

I’ve taken to their acai bowls this summer, too. They come in a regular ($8.95) or large size ($10.95) and are filled with organic granola, banana, strawberry, acai,

ou could go to Made in Hope Cafe every day for a year and not drink the same boba tea twice. My daughter and I fell for boba teas years ago, and these imports from Asia get trendier here in Hawaii every year. Boba is said to have originated in Taiwan when street tea vendors started adding fruit flavors to their teas. Boba tea is also known as pearl tea and bubble tea.

Made in Hope Cafe opened as a Stir It Up Cafe in August 2016, and then gradually changed their name, while keeping the Stir It Up products. I sat down with owners Peter Selvey and Chris Kanemura to find out more about the tea craze and what the Made in Hope brand means.

“In the beginning we started as Stir It Up Cafe,” says Selvey. “Chris Kanemura co-founded Made In Hope nonprofit organization, to talk about human exploita-

tion and work outreach with youth, and Chris and I use to go to the same church in Oahu. The cafe was a partnership with our friend who owned Stir It Up in Kahala Mall to provide some financial contribution to our community work with Made in Hope. But also to have a marketplace to meet people and families. The idea is to put your phones away and play board games.”

After a while Made in Hope bought out the Oahu startup for the Maui location.

“It ran for many months as Stir it up until their business was really growing in Oahu too, and it was going to be mutually beneficial to that we would buy them out,” says Selvey. “So now myself and Chris coown the cafe. We want to keep going. The response has been fantastic. We are still serving the Stir It Up products–we’re all friends.

So it’s Made in Hope Cafe featuring Stir It Up drinks. They did all the hard research on the recipes, and we want to honor that.

There are a lot of people who are huge fans of their Kahala Mall location. They come here and we stamp their stamp card.”

The cozy cafe and their board games

are some of the reasons my daughter and I stop by when wanting boba drinks and acai bowls. We like to sit and play Bananagrams, Boggle and any other word-related board games we can try. The drinks are a sweet treat but having conversations and playing a game away from devices and screens is a special kind of refreshment.

If you haven’t ever tried boba tea, feel free to ask someone there. Amanda Selvey, Peter’s daughter, works behind the counter and knows a lot about the flavors. Basically boba teas are a base tea plus a flavoring, with boba or other add-ins. The boba are these marble size pearls made of tapioca starch that have a chewy texture. They’re delicious with tea.

“The jasmine green tea is more floral; the black tea, the lemonade, the milky teas with non-dairy creamers, those are your base,” says Peter. “The milk tea is a particular kind of black tea that’s specific for making the milk tea base. But the other teas are jasmine green tea and black tea. Then of

course you have all the flavors that you can add to them. If you’ve never had boba tea, it can be confusing.”

Selvey says they recently streamlined the menu to make it less confusing. The menu is up on digitized screens on the wall, to the left you will find all the base teas and the flavors they come in–45 in all. To the right all of the add-ons. Drinks start at 25oz for regular at $5.95, larger versions at 32 oz go for $6.95 or mason jar size for $11 and you can get mason refills for $5. If you don’t love boba, there are 29 other things you can have dropped in your tea drink. This is a beverage with chunks of stuff that gets dropped in and you slurp it up through a straw. Some are even decadent.

“We usually point people to the Top Stirs Menu because that can help,” says Selvey.

The drinks sound unusual and even futuristic, but that’s the fun of it. The cafe also has a little gift shop with jewelry, totes and cookies that contribute to their nonprofit’s mission of improving human traffic issues and working with youth to educate and oppose exploitation. photographing them in really controlled conditions and hand holding the light. That is what makes them unusual pictures because I can actually really control the light and I can visually isolate them from their surroundings. I love seeing them in their natural habitats but to be perfectly honest sometimes they are a little difficult to see. Many are small. Many hide. It’s not so easy to photograph them to show their natural characteristics in their natural habitat.”

She became interested in invertebrates while on a NOAA research trip in 2006 that involved top biologists collecting and discovering various species. Trips like these aren’t common, because more often funding goes to better known megavertebrates.

“I don’t think I have ever seen terrestrial animals that are this interesting with this repertoire of color and shapes, forms and textures,” says Middleton. “That led me to focus on the marine invertebrates specifically.”

She asked me if I had a title for the book and I said yes, I want to call it Spineless and then the subtitle should be ‘Portraits of marine invertebrates the backbone of life in the sea.’ She said no, it shouldn’t be life in the sea, it should be the backbone of life, period. Because without a healthy marine invertebrate fauna in the ocean, the rest of life comes to a grinding halt.

Which is why the acidification of the world’s oceans poses such a big problem for the invertebrate ecosystem. Rapid changes caused by climate change are directly affecting our ocean invertebrates. They don’t have spines, so many of them depend on shells and corals to create these skeletons. The crab is an invertebrate that has an exoskeleton that is made of calcium carbonate. But rapid acidification of the ocean corrodes these calcium shells. There’s less cal-

never thought I would see a personality emerge in a photograph of a marine invertebrate. But that’s exactly what happened when I visited Susan Middleton’s Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates The Backbone of Life photography show at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery.

The show, and her book by the same name, is the result of Middleton working alongside biologists in research vessels as she photographs these fantastic creatures up close and personal. It’s so you and I can get to know these little seen living things.

“I hope people get excited by the show,” says Middleton. “In the sense that I hope people see animals that they never heard or seen before. I want them to get excited by that, and spark a curiosity that could lead to a greater understanding. How we each ask ourselves questions like, ‘what does this mean?’

If these animals are the foundation for the rest of life on the planet, then they are pretty important, and how does that work?”

The show is gorgeous. Larger than life images of invertebrates line the walls with little descriptions and anecdotes about the creatures that she’s profiled. Her video project Hermit

Crabs! also plays on a loop in a corner room.

Spineless is the sixth book in a line of projects that started with her photographing endangered plants and animals in the US. This brought her to Hawaii, where she was immediately intrigued by our biology.

“If I look back at my previous projects, each one leads me to the next,” says Middleton. “I did start making portraits of rare and endangered plants and animals in the mainland US but also in Hawaii. I did a couple of books on federally listed endangered species and that brought us to Hawaii. But when I got here I was like, wait, everything is totally different here.

Not just geographically, but the fact that 25 percent of plants and animals on the endangered species list are from Hawaii. But Hawaii has such a small land area. That was when I seriously started to attach myself to science. I wanted to understand that. I started understanding how evolution works and how amazing it was when the volcanic islands emerged that created the archipelago of Hawaii in this isolated area, away from the continents. This created the situation for these life forms to evolve over 70 million years. Because of this isolation, these life forms do not exist anywhere else in the world, and that is just so exquisite to me.”

To get the images, Middleton set up elaborate photo studios in wet labs on research ships.

“I have a little area where I setup my aquariums,” she says. “There is a constant flow of fresh seawater being pumped in from just outside the vessel.You can keep animals happy for a period of time with water that is fresh and the right temperature and all of that. I will put an animal in my aquarium and then visually isolate it by putting in a white background. I make these by sanding pieces of milky translucent plexiglass and then I have also created a lighting system. It’s kind of a complex photo studio. I’m

So she traveled side by side with scientist to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Palmyra, Kingman and Jarvis, in the Central Pacific area where there’s a really healthy coral reef habitat.

“I feel like there’s a commonality between the way artists work and the way scientists work,” says Middleton. “There’s a huge curiosity. This open-ended quest for discovery. They want to understand how life works. They’re looking at the smaller less conspicuous invertebrates.Yet evolutionarily this is the realm of life that the rest of life depends on. This is the foundation for all life on our planet. Over 98 percent of described species in the ocean are invertebrates. It’s like we are standing on their shoulders except most of them don’t have shoulders. We depend on them so much for our own survival. They’re important scientifically but also just ultra cool.”

She discussed her project with imminent marine biologist and ocean explorer Sylvia Earle, who shed some light on just how important these ocean creatures are.

“She wrote a beautiful foreword in my book Spineless,” says Middleton. “When I asked her to write it, I was on Midway Atoll,

Gun Fu ‘The Dark Tower’ is a grand, goofy guilty pleasure ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 95 Min.

A

boy named Jake (well played by Tom Taylor) has a tortured home life and is known in school for his troubling behavior. Jake dreams of a place called Mid-World, where a supernatural gunslinger named Roland of Gilead (played

by Idris Elba) pursues Walter, a vile magician (played by Matthew McConaughey).

Known as “The Man in Black,” Walter seeks to destroy the world by knocking down the all-powerful dark tower at the center of the universe. Jake is able to travel to Mid-World and aide the Gunslinger, whose use of firearms is so awesome it ought to be deemed “Gun Fu” (trademark pending).

Although I’m a lifelong fan of Stephen King (his Pet Sematary was the first novel of length I ever finished) and read at least one of his books a year, I never finished his The Dark Tower series. I enjoyed the first three of the eight novels but grew distracted by alternative literary options, as well as dozens of other King novels. Over the years, I recognized how elements, themes, characters

and places from that series would pop up in other King novels (particularly in Black House, a personal favorite). There was also an additional graphic novel series, as well as further Dark Tower tales, arriving long after we thought King was finally done with it.

The works of Tolkien are the clear influence but a better comparison is Star Wars. King not only established core characters and a mythos from the first sentence (“The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed”) but multiple worlds, alternating genres and even a specific slang. Clearly, the long-planned attempts to make this into a movie weren’t going to be easy. The current result (and unlikely to be the only adaptation) will work best for the uninitiated.

Nicolaj Arcel directs a hodgepodge screenplay, pillaging scraps of Dark Tower lore, as well as lots of King “Easter eggs” (more like references that go nowhere) and choice cuts from The Matrix, Terminator 2, The Golden Compass, The Giver and especially Last Action Hero, of all things. King devotees will likely respond to this as favorably as comic book fans did to Batman & Robin (which, like this, also has screenwriter Akiva Goldsman as a contributor).

Arcel’s film is everything I was afraid it’d be, as eight King novels have been crammed into a PG-13, 95-minute summer movie that has obviously been severely edited. The awful final scene, intended to set up a sequel that will never happen, appears to be a late addition re-shoot.

An absurd (if awfully compact) running time results in a rushed start, choppy midsection and an admittedly rousing finish.

The Dark Tower is a mess but it’s also generously entertaining and headed for midnight movie cult fandom, not sequelitus. Arcel has cobbled together a goofy but grand fantasy, full of enormous, unrealized potential.

There are too many ill-defined components, like the nature of Walter’s minions, how kidnapping kids and hooking them up to a Tower-destroying ray works and who the heck Jackie Earle Haley is play-

ing. The point of it all, particularly Jake’s Wizard of Oz-like journey to adulthood, doesn’t come across.

The scenes that work (Roland’s funny hospital encounter, most of the third act, Roland firing away, the visualizing of MidWorld and the campy showdown) are so exhilarating that they deserve a longer Director’s Cut to flesh them out.

Elba’s warm, expressive eyes provide Roland with the heart and angst the role requires.Yet, it’s McConaughey who steals the show with a performance that inches towards self-parody. There’s a playfulness and visible joy in McConaughey’s villainy, both silly and scary at the same time. Good performances, great scenes and an exciting score by composer Junkie XL keep this Tower at the level of a supreme guilty pleasure. ■

Something simple like cleaning out a drawer could lead to a million other tasks, until you find yourself at your neighbor’s house, chatting and sipping tea, while the drawer’s contents are strewn messily across your home, a garbage bag is stalled on the front stoop on its way to the bins, a letter is half-written to a neglected friend, laundry is mildewing in the washer, and a friend is still waiting to be called back. Messy, messy, messy. Avoid this kind of minor disaster by staying on task, even when something seemingly “more important” intrudes.

Excellent writers, in my opinion, come in two basic varieties: some wow you with incredible writing that’s astonishingly beautiful, clever, or surprising. Others just get out of the way of the stories they have to tell, and you find yourself totally immersed in the world they’ve created, not even noticing the writing, simply compelled to turn page after page. Storytelling is similar. Keep this in mind when you’re telling stories, even if you’re just talking about what you did last night. The more compelling you can be this week, either through your brilliance or your ability to get out of your own way, the happier everyone (including you) will be.

People are impatient when it comes to transformation. Fat people hope to become thin overnight, and unhealthy folks want to pop a pill and wake up in perfect condition. Some wish they could lose their baggage as effectively as some airlines, never to be seen again, but somehow most of it keeps catching up with them. When it comes to not wanting to wait for change, you Rams are the worst. You’ve learned to apply patience in so many other areas of your life, especially regarding other people. When it comes to yourself, however, you’re impossibly demanding. Cut yourself some slack, and give yourself some time.

When you spend a week at the beach, it’s virtually impossible to keep sand out of everything: it’s perpetually in your clothes, bed, food and all your cracks and crevices. This, effectively, is what’s happening to you. One tiny aspect of your life is infecting all the rest, so that every meal, dream, and moment is flavored by it. There’s no easy solution for this, of course, besides leaving the oceanfront entirely, which would mean you’d also miss out on all the fun to be had there. However, you can take measures to make sure that sand (or its equivalent) has a minimal impact on your life. This week, I’d suggest you do so.

Do what you love, whether or not you’re good at it.

If you do it with enough passion and enthusiasm, people will adore you for it, despite whatever shortcomings you have. I love singing, for example, even though I’m not especially good at it (fortunately I’m not tone deaf, either), and people usually good-naturedly put up with my frequent bursts of song even when they’re out of key. Your friends will do the same for you, because they’ll be happy to see you happy, right? This week, ask them to humor you rather than humiliate you when you try something you won’t necessarily be good at. Chances are, they will.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

In order to get a better view of the big picture, you’ve climbed to the top of a very tall, skinny tree. Unfortunately, the gusty winds are tossing you this way and that and it’s all you can do to hang on for dear life.

Consequently your supposedly better perspective only serves to make you dizzy, nauseous, and terrified. Don’t let this encourage you to climb down, put on blinders, and focus only on the goal just ahead of you, as you may be inclined. While that’s certainly a valid temporary strategy at times, this isn’t one of them. You need to see what’s only visible from way up here. Hang on tight a little longer, and keep looking, all the way to the horizon.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Tolerance for incompetence and stupidity isn’t one of your fortes–nor should it be. Don’t let kindhearted Cancers or forgiving Pisces talk you into cutting these losers any slack. If they can’t cut it, cut them loose, despite what supposedly more compassionate sorts might think is the way to go. Sure, they might have untapped potential, but you don’t have time to wait for them to figure out how to access it, nor the energy to help them, so in actuality the kindest thing you can do is free them to find something they might already be good at or someone who actually has time to help them figure it all out.

Add love to the world. This is something I reckon we all ought to be doing, all the time, but I want you to focus on it especially this week. Every minute of the day, in every situation this week, as often as you can remember, I want you to think, “How can I add love or joy to this situation?” Don’t be discouraged if your efforts seem to go unappreciated; this isn’t just about what you get back, and anyway, people aren’t necessarily used to loving and joyful activity while waiting in line at the DMV, or wherever you are. Trust that there will be a positive ripple effect, and what goes around will, eventually, come around.
