Future UN Ambassador Gabbard?

REP. GABBARD MET WITH PRES-ELECT TRUMP THIS WEEK Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, met with President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Spence on the morning of Monday, Nov. 21, according to various news reports published that day.

“Gabbard, who backed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, is being considered for jobs at the Defense Department, State Department and the United Nations, the source said,” according to a CNN report published a few hours later.

There still aren’t too many details about they all discussed at the meeting–just a lot of palace gossip and speculation.

“Gabbard met with Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Monday morning, but Trump spokesman Jason Miller said it was ‘premature’ to discuss Gabbard’s potential role in the Trump administration,” reported McClatchyDC. New York Times reporter Jeremy W. Peters tweeted that Gabbard “is under consideration for UN Ambassador, per senior Trump aide.”

In their story, Reuters included some interesting background on how Gabbard’s policy preferences mesh with Trump’s (as much as he has policy preferences, anyway): “Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the U.S. Congress, has veered from Democratic Party positions at times, backing policies cracking down on immigration to the United States by Muslims in particular,” stated the Reuters report. “In November 2015, she was one of a few dozen Democrats who joined Republicans to pass a bill mandating stronger screening process for refugees from Iraq and Syria seeking to enter the United States. In 2014, she called for a rollback

of the visa waiver program for Britain, Germany, France and other European countries with what she called ‘Islamic extremist’ populations.”

Gabbard’s official statement on the meeting, released a few hours later, contained no information (either to confirm or deny) on a possible job with the Trump Administration. “President-elect Trump asked me to meet with him about our current policies regarding Syria, our fight against terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS, as well as other foreign policy challenges we face,” Gabbard said. “Where I disagree with President-elect Trump on issues, I will not hesitate to express that disagreement. However, I believe we can disagree, even strongly, but still come together on issues that matter to the American people and affect their daily lives. We cannot allow continued divisiveness to destroy our country.”

Gabbard’s statement contained no specifics on where she might “disagree” with Trump. More troubling, though, is her insistence that we should all “come together,” as though Trump is just another Republican who got elected.

None of this should be surprising.

Though Gabbard ultimately endorsed Hillary Clinton for president (after first endorsing Sanders, of course) and easily won reelection this year, she’s been ominously quiet on the issue of Trump’s appalling appointees and nominations, to say nothing of his apparent desire to use the presidency to further his personal business interests.

Most notably, her signature did NOT appear with 169 of her colleagues in the House of Representatives on a Nov. 16 letter to Trump denouncing his nomination of notorious white nationalist Stephen Bannon to be his “chief strategist.”

“Since the election there have been a number of incidents across the country in which minorities, including Muslim Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Jewish Americans, have been the targets of violence, harassment and intimidation,” states the letter. “Mr. Bannon’s appointment sends the wrong message to people who have engaged in those types of activities, indicating that they will not only be tolerated, but endorsed by your Administration. Millions of Americans have expressed fear and concern about how they will be treated by the Trump Administration and your appointment of Mr. Bannon only exacerbates and validates their concerns.”

That Gabbard didn't sign such a letter is remarkable (though Democrat Colleen Hanabusa just took office to replace the late Mark Takai as 1st District Representative, she signed the letter, according to a printed list of all the signees compiled by The Boston Globe).

Though Gabbard’s view on Bannon’s appointment isn’t publicly known, what is known is that Bannon seems to like Gabbard. In fact, according to a Nov. 15 article in The Hill , Bannon is a “big fan” of Gabbard.

“Bannon admires what Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have done on the left in generating populist energy and stoking opposition to trade deals,” states The Hill article. “And he’s a big fan of Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the Hawaii Democrat who frustrates progressives due to her more

right-leaning stances on guns, refugees and Islamic extremism.”

Outraged at Gabbard’s refusal to sign the letter, Hawaii state Rep. Angus McKelvey, D–West Maui, wrote Gabbard his own letter on Nov. 17.

“All of this begs the question of why you–an elected Democrat representing constituents in a highly Democrat district–support an individual who has a propensity for racism, anti-immigration, anti-Semitism, and ties to White Supremacists groups,” McKelvey wrote.

“Your silence on this issue also infers to many that you would rather see our country continue its current course of disorder and turmoil instead of unity for the good of all the people.”

In any case, Gabbard’s office still hasn’t responded to two phone messages and two emails on the Bannon letter.

FEDERAL APPEALS COURT REJECTS MAUI COUNTY GMO MORATORIUM Bad news for opponents of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and Monsanto in particular: on Friday, Nov. 18, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down three county measures dealing with GMOs and pesticides in Hawaii, including Maui’s famous ballot measure, passed in the 2014 election.

“The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded Friday that Hawaii state pesticide law is comprehensive, and that the Legislature intended it to be ‘uniform and exclusive of additional, local rules,’” Civil Beat reported a few hours after the ruling came down. “That means county ordinances governing agriculture that were overturned by a federal judge in 2014 and 2015 will not go into effect.”

In their official statement on the ruling, posted Nov. 19, the SHAKA Movement– which spearheaded the GMO moratorium– put on a very brave face.

“This is a groundbreaking win for all GMO movements across the country,” reads the statement. “The court has acknowledged that states and home rule counties within states do indeed have the right to regulate and/or ban ‘commercial’ GMO crops within home rule counties or states.”

The statement adds, that “SHAKA Movement states that by no means is this ruling a setback or loss in any way.

We and the over 20,000 citizens of Maui who voted for the GMO Crop Moratorium believe in the Hawaii state constitution and will continue our efforts to ensure the Public Trust Doctrine is honored as the rule of our lands.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Researchers in Poland reported in August the “survival” of a colony of ants that wandered unsuspectingly into an old nuclear weapon bunker and became trapped.

When researchers first noticed in 2013, they assumed the ants would soon die, either freezing or starving to death, but, returning in 2015 and 2016, they found the population stable. Their only guess: New ants were falling into the bunker, “replacing” the dead ones. Thus, ants condemned to the bunker slowly starve, freezing, in total darkness, until newly condemned ants arrive and freeze and starve in total darkness–and on and on.

JUDICIAL ACTIVISM Jackson County, Michigan, judge John McBain briefly gained notoriety in October when a Michigan news site released courtroom video of a December 2015 hearing in which McBain felt the need to throw off his robe, leap from the bench and tackle defendant Jacob Larson, who was resisting the one court officer on hand to restrain him.

Yelling “Tase his ass right now,” McBain is shown holding on until help arrived–with Larson perhaps undermining his earlier courtroom statements claiming it was his girlfriend, and not he, who was the aggressor in alleged stalking incidents.

PERSPECTIVE In 1921, researchers for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stated categorically in a journal that “the one predatory animal” inspiring practically nothing “good” is the mountain lion, but recent research in the journal Conservation Letters credits the animal for saving the lives of many motorists by killing deer, thus tempering the current annual number (20,000) of driver-deer collisions.

Even killing deer, mountain lions still trail pussycats as predators; researchers in Nature Communications in 2013 estimated that “free-ranging (U.S.) domestic cats” kill at least 1.4 billion birds and 6.9 billion small mammals annually.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS On the way to the police station in Youngstown, Ohio, on Oct. 19, after being

arrested for, among other things, being a felon in possession of a gun, Raymond Brooks, 25, asked an officer (apparently in all seriousness) whether, after he got booked at the station, he could have his gun back. (The police report did not specify whether the officer said yes or no.)

‘EMOTIONAL SUPPORT’ ANIMALS Daniel, age four–and a duck–accompanied a woman in her 20s in October on a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Asheville, outfitted in a Captain America diaper and red shoes to protect its feet, occasionally (if inadvisedly) giving the woman a peck on the mouth. Reporting the event was author Mark Essig, who has written favorably about pigs but admitted he’d never before been on a flight with “companion poultry” and mused whether Daniel, gazing out a window, experienced an “ancestral” yearning to fly.

THE ART OF SMUGGLING At press time, Leston Lawrence, 35, an employee of the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, was awaiting a court decision on charges that he stole $140,000 worth of thick gold coins (“pucks”) that, over time, were taken from the mint in his rectum.

The mint’s “highest security measures” never turned up a puck on or in Lawrence; he was arrested after the mint investigated a tip that he had sold an unusual number of them for someone of his pay grade.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Mayor Paul Antonio of Toowoomba, Australia (pop. 100,000), admitted he had picked an uphill fight, but still has recently been handing out cards to men on the street asking them to help the city (in unspecified ways) become completely free of pornography. Though the city has several tax-paying sex businesses (even a strip club and a brothel), Antonio’s message (augmented by public confessions of men burdened by their porn habits) is directed at the internet’s ease of access to images of male “dominance and power” over females. ■

Volunteers make it all possible and many hands make light work of providing fresher, more nutritious food to those in the community that need it most. La‘a kea also offers affordable housing for Maui’s special needs adults. La‘a kea is working to ensure that youth and adults with autism and intellectual disabilities in Maui County have the opportunity to dream big, and make

Growing cucumbers at Kalama Intermediate School Garden

K

alama Intermediate School’s garden agriculture program may still be in its infancy, but ag teacher Garth Marriott has things in full swing. So much so the class is already growing toppings for the pizza at Flatbread for their upcoming fundraiser night this Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 5-10pm.

“We were trying to make it a goal to grow toppings for the pizza,” says Marriott.

“Flatbread suggested basil and rosemary.

We used that as a curriculum base for the kids to talk about real world applications, like what volume we need to produce.

They need 12 pounds of basil to cover a week’s worth of pizza, so we will be able to provide about half of that. We will be harvesting on Monday for the Tuesday fundraiser. We need 48 really strong plants for that, and with the time constraints we weren’t quite there to produce the full 12 pounds. As a model though we’re trying to move forward with that as a goal. It also really gives the kids a sense of pride when they grow something, and to see it used at this restaurant. And Flatbread has been so great to work with us and be so flexible.”

The curriculum is new, and so far just the 6th graders are working in the garden as part of their classroom work. But Marriott and the administrative team at Kalama are hoping for a quick expansion to include all the students.

“The 6th grade students at Kalama are working in the school garden curriculum,” says Marriott. “Half of them come first semester, and the rest come second semester.

I have 122 students working in the garden now. Next year after the winter break, the next 122 come in. The program just started last year. Our long term goal is to add some electives for the other 7th and 8th grade

students to continue working in the garden.

Right now, we have a gap during the 7th and 8th grade years until high school level agriculture. We have started an agriculture club for after school involvement for all grades, and we do a farmers market on Thursdays. We sell fresh produce and starts out of our garden. It’s a really cool way for kids to learn that skill–they learn sales and communication along with the ag. We also want to feed the community as we grow and start to create a surplus.”

The school has also procured nearby acreage, but it will be a while before they can expand that far. That’s where the fundraiser comes in.

“There’s so much potential for growing this program, but I realized getting money to grease the wheels right away is what is going to help this program the most.

The support for our upcoming fundraiser has been phenomenal. We have over 50 companies that have donated stuff for the silent auction. Several of the items are really substantial. We have several gift cards for treatments at the Grand Wailea Spa, Pacific Whale Foundation cruises, Golf Course rounds, stays at bed and breakfasts–we are looking at over $7,000 in retail value for these items. I don’t even know how we’re going to fit it all in on one table at Flatbread. It’s not a bad problem to have.”

This Tuesday, starting at 5pm, Flatbread in Paia will kick down a portion of every pizza they sell to the Kalama Intermediate School Garden. The silent auction will be in full effect as well. ■

T

rying to nail down an interview time between big wave sets was tough for Maui boy Ian Walsh.

He’s been surfing big waves every chance he could get for as long as he can remember. His career trajectory and competition schedule has been distinct from most pro surfers because of these huge swells, and their unpredictability.

Somehow, he’s found the time to create a new kind of surf film, in a partnership with Red Bull. This Saturday, Nov. 26, Maui gets to see Distance Between Dreams at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

“The concept for the film had been brewing in the back of my mind since 2011”, says Walsh. “I had started writing small storyboards down and conceptualizing what I would really like to work on.

I was influenced by a few pivotal films.

It’s really fun to see it all come to fruition years later. When it’s all happening, it’s happening so fast. Last year, there were so many impactful swells so the production level was moving at such an expedited rate.

Its been a really fun ride. To see it go from notes on a piece of paper six or seven years ago to what it is now, and to be able to share that with the world on Maui on Nov. 26, is incredible.”

In the film, you’ll follow Walsh and his brothers Luke, Shaun and D.K., along with World Champ John John Florence, Greg Long and Shane Dorian during the 2015 winter season where Hawaii saw back-toback El Nino swells.

“Rather than make a typical surf film that only shows what big wave surfers do, we made a film that shows who these exceptional individuals are,” says Rob Bruce, the film’s director. “Very few people realize what guys like Ian and his brothers go through every day, not only physically, but also emotionally and personally to remain ready and at the top of their sport year-round. It’s a fascinating

and crazy lifestyle that creates unique characters and inspiring camaraderie.”

One of the ways the film gives you an insight into what these athletes are thinking is by mic’ing them in the water. “You have real time audio,” says Walsh. “We captured the emotions of what the surfers are sharing between each other, before, during and after these waves. Talking to themselves before a 60-foot wall of water hits you in the impact zone. All of that is just so real.”

Put simply, this is not a typical surf film.

“Usually it’s, ‘OK, show a travel sequence, then queue the music, queue the surfing, queue the location, repeat,’” says Walsh. “Instead, this film shows a lot more of what goes into surfing–the ups and downs we face. Another big thing that’s different for me is that a lot of the times when you see a surf film or a snowboard film, you only see the best of the best shots that make the cut. In this film, we wanted to show some of the sessions in their entirety, to show some of the really horrific falls and a guy bouncing back. I wanted to show how a bad fall can alter the psychology of the entire session when waves are in the 60-foot range.”

The film is part of Red Bull’s Unrideables series.

“The Unrideables franchise is dedicated to athletes and visionaries, who are truly redefining what is possible in their sport,” said Scott Bradfield, Head of Production and Development for Red Bull Media House North America. “Ian’s winter last year represents sport progressing vision and effort at the highest level.”

The red carpet event starts at 5pm. Tickets are $10 and free for ages 12 and under.

'Moonlight' Everything about this film is new, and that’s wonderful ★★★★★ Rated PG-13/ 99 Min.

T

he first scene of Moonlight is done in a single take: we watch as a drug dealer named Juan (played by Mahershala Ali) oversees his operation and checks in, mentor-like, with a young protégé, who is furiously working the streets.

This sequence is filmed in a handheld, old school manner that recalls when doing these sorts of shots were difficult, intricately organized stunts that couldn’t be done with CGI. It’s the first indication that the film we’re watching is something truly special.

The best thing a movie can do is present the viewer with something new. After the first few minutes, I assumed I knew where the Florida-set Moonlight was going and that I had seen a version of it before. The character of Juan immediately reminded me of Delroy Lindo’s amazing performance as a neighborhood “father figure” in Spike Lee’s 1995 masterpiece Clockers.

The set up seemed to indicate this was another slice of life movie about growing up in “the hood,” as dozens of great, early

1990s movies had captured previously.

Actually, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, one of the great movie discoveries of 2016, goes places I’ve never seen before and presents its impactful story in a bold new way.

Juan discovers a little boy hiding by himself. The kid, who identifies himself as “Little” (played by Alex R. Hibbert) doesn’t say much but doesn’t want to go home. Juan is moved by the boy’s inner strength and immediately takes to him. Their relationship becomes a tight, father/son dynamic, in which Juan instills Little with a newfound encouragement. We also discover why Little is so afraid of his mother (a devastating Naomi Harris) and that the boy carries a big secret.

The story is told in three acts, each marked by Little’s growth into a man. We meet up with him as a teenager (played by Ashton Sanders and identified as “Chiron”) and as an adult in a very different stage of his life (played by Trevante Rhodes and referred to as “Black”). This brief synopsis does nothing to describe the way Jenkins shapes his story, as a series of memories that range from painful to rapturous.

Movies depicting a “gangsta” lifestyle

This is great and all, but maybe next time can we take a boat?

dependably have a lot of hip-hop music on the soundtrack but not this one. Instead, Moonlight uses a great deal of instrumental, classical-sounding music, creating a universal, richly felt mood. The scene where Juan teaches Little how to swim is especially moving, as the imagery and music create a richly observed, seemingly organic moment.

Moonlight presents a journey unfamiliar to me and to cinema in general: that of a shy, timid, gay African-American man who struggles with his identity while growing up in a bad neighborhood. There are moments that lean towards melodrama but nothing here is presented in a preachy, politically charged or remotely message-driven way.

Everyone in the cast gives a superb, layered performance. Ali makes Juan a complex, surprisingly tender man whose profession says nothing about the good person he’s trying

to be. Hibbert never hits a false note as Little, Sanders is devastating playing the character as a taunted high school student and Rhodes is unforgettable as a man at possibly the end or the beginning of his life.

The final act, in which Black reconnects with an old friend, is remarkably suspenseful, as nothing that occurs feels inevitable or motivated by screenplay convention. The only thing remotely Hollywood here is the familiar name of the film’s producer (some guy named Brad Pitt).

There is sadness in Little’s journey but also humor, insight and joy. Then there’s the final scene, which is a breathtaking in its poetry.

Moonlight takes lots of chances and emerges a bold, beautiful work. Jenkins side-steps editorializing Little’s world and journey, and makes every scene an opportunity for discover and understanding. ■
