This is, of course, not without some risk, as political scientist Sydney Iaukea pointed out in a Sept. 15 essay for MauiTime on the NATIVE Act. “This would encourage every rural place ‘too difficult to access’ free and open access,” Iaukea wrote. “Every place and all parts of culture open to the possible destruction of mass consumerism.

In essence, no place is sacred or worth protecting, every place is open for intrusion.”

The all-suite and villa luxury resort was recognized by the brand for achieving best overall operating performance along with outstanding guest satisfaction.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts selects the winner of the Hotel of the Year distinction by combining guest experience scores with financial performance. The Fairmont Kea Lani earned its first place title with high performance scores in each category.

The oceanfront resort was also recognized for launching a guest problem resolution initiative aimed at empowering colleagues to minimize the steps involved in resolving guest issues. That initiative was subsequently adopted by all Fairmont properties.

Looks like the 12th annual Lahaina Town Clean Up was a success, with event organizers saying that more than 500 people participated in the Sept. 24 effort to beautify Lahaina.

“Lead by The Lahaina Yacht Club, the Lahaina Harbor Master, and many of our local boating companies, this year’s main focus was Mala Ramp,” said a Sept. 25 news release sent out by event organizer Matt Lane.

“The Lahaina Harbor Clean Up was lead by Trilogy Excursions through the Blue Aina Clean Up. The town efforts were organized by Ashley Roussel, Surfrider, Malama Maui Nui, Local Surf Schools, all three Rotary Clubs and many of the town merchants.

Preventive measures, such as drain stenciling and signage, were also a big part of the clean up. All data collected will be reported to the International Coastal Clean Up. Helping change global policy around the world, ICC is a worldwide effort of over 800,00 people volunteering around the world this month.”

In a departure from past years, clean up organizers were able to secure 300 reus-

able grain sacks for volunteers. Donated by Maui Brewing Company, the sacks can be washed and used for other clean ups.

“Keeping our community clean and trash free is a necessity that aids local businesses, the community and the environment,” stated Lane’s news release. “The Lahaina Town Cleanup continues to bring members of our community from all age groups together to educate, motivate and grow as a cleaner, more conscious community. Special thanks to Ashley Roussel for Co-organizing the event, Down the Hatch, Maui Surf Clinics, Volcom, all of the Lahaina surf schools, Cool Cat Cafe, Tropic Water and Pacific O’s.”

“As a founding member of the organization, I am excited that the number of certified operators across the State more than doubled since the 2014-2016 certifications were awarded,” said Annette Kaohelaulii, HEA Board Treasurer.

HEA’s Certification Program is only one of two statewide programs in the U.S. providing a third party, comprehensive assessment of tour providers whose operations positively affect the state’s natural and cultural resources, contribute to conservation and help sustain local communities.

The British food artists Bompas & Parr are staging (through Oct. 30) a tribute to the late writer Roald Dahl by brewing batches of beer using yeast swabbed and cultured from a chair Dahl used and which has been on display at the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden, England. And a 16-year-old boy made headlines in August for being one of the rare survivors of an amoeba–a brain-eating amoeba–which he acquired diving into a pond on private property in Florida’s Broward County. (By popular legend, Floridians are believed to lack sufficient brain matter to satisfy amoebas!)

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION The Drug Enforcement Administration has schemed for several years to pay airline and Amtrak employees for tips on passengers who might be traveling with large sums of cash, so that the DEA can interview them–with an eye toward seizing the cash under federal law if they merely “suspect” that the money is involved in illegal activity. A USA Today investigation, reported in August, revealed that the agency had seized $209 million in a decade, from 5,200 travelers who, even if no criminal charge results, almost never get all their money back (and, of 87 recent cash seizures, only two actually resulted in charges). One Amtrak employee was secretly paid $854,460 over a decade for snitching passenger information to the DEA.

UPDATE In August, the Defense Department’s inspector general affirmed once again (following on 2013 disclosures) that the agency has little knowledge of where its money goes–this time admitting that the Department of the Army had made $6.5 trillion in accounting “adjustments” that appeared simply to be made up out of thin air, just to get the books balanced for 2015.

(In part, the problem was laid to 16,000 financial data files that simply disappeared with no trace.) “As a result,” reported Fortune magazine, “there has been no way to know how the Defense Department–far and away the biggest chunk of Congress’s annual budget–spends the public’s money.”

MISUNDERSTANDINGS “Mr. L,” 31, a Chinese tourist visiting Dulmen, Germany, in July, went to a police station to report his stolen wallet, but signed the wrong form and was logged in as requesting asylum, setting off a bureaucratic nightmare that left him confined for 12 days at a migrant hostel before the error was rectified. And in August at a hospital in Shenyang, China, “Wang,” 29, awaiting his wife’s childbirth, was reported (by People’s Daily via Shanghaiist.com) to have allowed a nurse to wave him into a room for anesthesia and hemorrhoid surgery–a procedure that took 40 minutes.

(The hospital quickly offered to pay a settlement–but insisted that, no matter his purpose at the hospital, he in fact had hemorrhoids, and they were removed.)

THIS WEEK IN MISTRESS DISPELLERS Evidently, many Chinese wives who suspect their husbands of affairs have difficulty in confronting them, for a profession has risen recently of “mistress dispellers” whose job instead is to contact the mistress and persuade her, sometimes through an elaborate ruse, to break off the relationship. For a fee (a New York Times dispatch said it could be “tens of thousands of dollars”), the dispeller will “subtly infiltrate the mistress’s life” and ultimately convince her to move on. A leading dispeller agency in Shanghai, translated as the “Weiqing International Marriage Hospital Emotion Clinic Group,” served one wife by persuading the mistress to take a higherpaying job in another city.

IRONY Flooding from rains in August tore down a basement wall of the Connellsville (Pennsylvania) Church of God, wrecking and muddying parts of the building and threatening the first-floor foundation, but under the policy written by the Church Mutual Insurance company, flooding damage is not covered, as rain is an “act of God.” (Church Mutual apparently uses a standard insurance industry definition and thus recognizes, contrary to some religious beliefs, that not everything is caused by God.)

GOOD INTENTIONS GONE HAYWIRE In 2005, India enacted a landmark antipoverty program, obligating the government to furnish 100 days’ minimum-wage work to unskilled laborers (potentially, 70 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion people). Programs often fail in India because of rampant corruption, but a recent study by a Cambridge University researcher concluded that the 2005 law is failing for the opposite reason–anti-corruption measures in the program. Its requirement of extreme transparency has created an exponential increase in paperwork (to minimize opportunities for corruption), severely delaying the availability of jobs. ■

We visit the island’s only winery, now rebranded as MauiWine.

E

veryone who knows me is aware that I’m a wine lover. I love tasting new wines, get excited about visiting wineries and adore dinner and wine dates with my friends. It’s been a few years since I visited the winery in Ulupalakua, but I recently learned two things. First, that there were now offering a new tour of the grounds called the “King’s Tasting.” And second, that they had recently re-branded themselves to MauiWine. Since I had Alissa, a childhood friend visiting me from San Francisco who’s also a wine freak like me, there was no hesitation in heading Upcountry.

Given that we were raised in an area that’s flooded with wines from Napa Valley, Russian River and Sonoma County, we learned to seek out smaller wine varieties. Alissa and I have similar tastes in wine selections, though she may be more prone to white wine varieties.

We’re not wimpy wine lovers–we like some meat and unusual flavors in our selections.

Through my own history of learning about wines, I’ve become aware that a wine’s flavor depends a great deal on the soil, weather and fertilization choices a vintner makes.

What we now call MauiWine first began in 1974 as a small private corporation situated within the 20,000-acre Ulupalakua Ranch property. Today, the winery hosts more than 100,000 visitors a year. Their 23-acre vineyard is located about 1,650 feet up the mountain on the makai side of Haleakala Highway.

There, they grow a variety of grapes, including Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Rose and Gewurztraminer.

“There is a story about Maui in each of our wines,” said Paula Hegele, the president of MauiWine. “Every raindrop, ray of light, wind and temperature change is embedded into

each wine grown here. Wine is a reflection of place. The name MauiWine is honest, proud and exhilarating. It creates a deep connection to the land and people that craft our wines, and the significance and beauty of ‘Ulupalakua.”

Paula Hegele has worked at Maui’s only winery for over 25 years (her son Joseph is the winery’s marketing director). You could definitely say that she has been the chief instigator in keeping the winery going and progressing. She believes that MauiWine’s preeminent goal is to present wines that support Maui’s agribusiness culture and the people who live here.

Like many well-known wineries in California and Europe, MauiWine is located on a historic piece of property. Here you’ll find a fascinating agricultural past, gardens, aged structures and rare trees.

“After 40-plus years of business we have had numerous challenges, disappointments and successes,” said Paula Hegele. “We are just starting to get a solid footing in understanding who we are and what we want to be as MauiWine.”

The winery’s history begins in 1856, when the former whaling captain James Makee purchased the land and named it Rose Ranch, after his wife Catherine’s favorite flower variety. For the next 30 years, Makee and his family worked hard building up the ranch. They rehabilitated the sugarcane fields of the Torbert Plantation, raised cattle, brought in dairy cows, planted cotton and grew many other for-profit based crops on the estate. At the time, their dairy was famous for a sweet cream butter that was exported to markets on Oahu.

Not only did Rose Ranch become a bustling headquarters for Upcountry agribusiness, but it was also a popular place to visit.

Makee and his family hosted soirees at the ranch every month. Guests included King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani.

“The main entrance to the grounds surrounding the mansion was surmounted with an illumination bearing the words–“Welcome to the King,” in red letters, bordered with sprays of pine-leaves,” the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported in April 1874. “A neat but roomy cottage was set apart for the use of their Majesties, and here the party remained in the enjoyment of the liveral hospitality of Capt. Makee. In the interim, a large feast in the native style was spread under the shade of the noble trees near the mansion.”

Makee died in 1879 at the age of 67. He was originally buried at the Rose Ranch Mausoleum located behind the sugar mill. But after robbers ransacked the graves of him and his wife, their remains were moved to the Oahu Cemetery.

Many of the buildings and trees found on the MauiWine property today date to Makee’s era. One of the most impressive examples is a huge 200 or so year-old Queensland Kauri (Agathis Robusta). Native to New Zealand and currently endangered, this spectacular tree is silver-barked and has a life expectancy of 1,500 to 2,000 years. In addition, Catherine Makee’s rose plantings are still apparent today– in fact, there’s a spectacular area of pink English tea roses planted outside the old dairy.

In 1886, James Isaac Dowsett purchased the Rose Ranch estate for $84,500. A former captain in the British Navy, he was considered a “pioneer capitalist” and settled in Hawaii after a pearl fishing expedition.

Born in Honolulu, his eldest son James Isaac Dowsett, Jr. is believed to be the first AngloSaxon child born in Hawaii not of missionary parentage. A childhood friend of Kamehameha

IV, Kamehameha V and Lunalilo, James Dowsett Jr. eventually became the first rancher to import Aberdeen Angus stock to Maui.

James Dowsett Sr. died in 1898, and the Rose Ranch land was endowed to Phoebe Dowsett-Makee, who was married to James Makee’s son Charles (small island!). After Charles died, Phoebe married Dr. James M. Raymond, who purchased the ranch in 1900 and renamed it Raymond Ranch. Raymond built a slaughterhouse, raised thoroughbred Hereford cattle and was the owner of some of the fastest race horses in Hawaii.

In 1922, Frank Baldwin–an owner of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S)– purchased Raymond Ranch and renamed it Ulupalakua Ranch. His sons were also some of the best polo players in the Territory of Hawaii. Frank Baldwin managed the Ulupalakua Ranch until he died in 1956.

Not quite a decade after Frank Baldwin’s death, C. Pardee Erdman purchased the Ulupalakua Ranch. At that time, more than 30 ranch hands and their families lived on the estate.

The property had amassed about 6,000 cattle and now encompassed approximately 58,000 acres. He also introduced sheep and elk to the Ulupalakua Ranch. The Erdman family also began to adopt environmentally conscious and sustainable practices for managing their ag lands–pretty groundbreaking, for the time.

Erdman also partnered with Napa Valley winemaker Emil Tedeschi to build Maui’s first winery. After experimenting with over 140 grape varietals, they found satisfaction in planting a hybrid grape called Carnelian in 1975.

initely gravitate more to an herby wine than a sweet wine. I’m not really prone to being a fan of a buttery Chardonnay or a sweet Merlot. I like wines with some richness, and I definitely want to taste the soil. I love the funky tastes

Upon leaving the Kings Tasting Tour, my friend and I were definitely inspired and in

high spirits. Having an opportunity to share the Island of Maui with mainland friends is always exciting, and visiting the MauiWine property was a highlight of her trip. Besides the opportunity to taste MauiWine varieties, it was kind of like an art history class. After the tour, I asked Joseph Hegele which wine region around the world compares to MauiWine’s vineyard type and wine quality output.

“The closest comparison would be to Old World wines of Rhone Valley, France,” he said. It’s quite a boast, but I’m not surprised that Maui’s fertile lands could produce a wine that’s comparable to a world-renowned wine province like the Rhone Valley.

Although MauiWine’s grapes are growing well and abundantly, it’s still a time investment in growing wine varieties. Taken as a whole, MauiWine is still relatively new in the world of winemaking.

Maui has a lot of agri-businesses, but MauiWine is different. Once thought of as merely the place tourists go to for pineapple wine, it’s steadily transforming into something much more sophisticated. But there is still much work yet to be done.

“In the coming weeks our new history room will be completed, with new stories and information regarding the past of Ulupalakua and Rose Ranch will be back on the walls,” said Paula Hegele. “Three walls will be covered with history from 1860 to present. Captain Makee, King Kalakaua, ranching then and now and a little about the winery’s history as well.

The grounds look as great as ever–the Jail and King’s Cottage are recently remodeled.”

Joseph Hegele agrees.

“We just want to continue to make interesting wines that represent the place they are grown, nothing more important that,” he said. “As far into the future as I can see, this vineyard will still be about experimentation, discovery and creativity. There will always be unique challenges to face and opportunities to try new things. What these grapes are capable of is not yet defined. We have no restrictions or rules to follow. It’s exciting!”

of Old World wines, and it’s exciting to taste wines from the smaller and more in-the-know wineries in the world. This is where I see MauiWine fitting into the wine industry.

I’m always infatuated with Cabernet Sauvignons from the Central Coast of California– my absolute favorite being a 2013 from Justin Vineyards in Paso Robles. It’s smooth, aromatic and tastes like a chocolate-tobacco-herbed soil bomb. Other red wine choices that get my blood pumping with excitement would be from small family wineries in the Spanish Canary Islands. Known as tintos in Spanish, there are many interesting flavors that come from this area of the world; black pepper spice, wildflowers and some atypical fermentation tastes that are definitely consistent to an Old World wine flavor. Like MauiWine, wines from the Canary Islands are grown in volcanic rich soil, so there’s a certain depth in the body of the wines that is pretty comparable.

The biggest difference is that most wines from the Canary Islands come from historic vines–MauiWine has only emerged with their newest varietals in the past few years.

In regards to red wines, I was definitely impressed with MauiWine’s Malbec. It has a malted flavor, but you can still taste an herby quality. It will be interesting to see what the next harvest brings about.

South African wines are also special.

Favorite wines from there would be a Warwick Sauvignon Blanc or a Chenin Blanc from De Morgenzon. It’s a wine type that’s not as popular in the United States as in France or the rest of the world, but one every chef and sommelier will say is a favorite.

MauiWine’s Chenin Blanc is quite impressive. In fact, I think MauiWine’s smaller barrel estate wine varieties like their Chenin Blanc are the wines that would be advantageous for expert and aspiring wine lovers to taste.

Of course, while MauiWine grows fine grapes, for many, the winery is arguably more famous for its pineapple wines. Since planting the first grape vineyard in 1974, the idea of growing grapes in Maui took a lot of patience and experimentation. While waiting for grape varieties to grow and fruit, pineapple wines became a kind of training ground that has since flourished into an extremely popular wine product. In a sense, the pineapple wines have somewhat fed the engine that has transitioned MauiWine into what it is now.

The Maui Gold fruit that’s used for their pineapple wines are hand-picked and tasted before they’re delivered to MauiWine’s production facility. The waste from the pineapples go to cattle feed and fertilizer on the Ulupalakua Ranch property.

It takes 72,000 pounds of pineapple fruit to make about 4,000 gallons of juice. It takes two days to crush the fruit, which then goes into a cold tank. Within five days, the fermentation process begins, and takes four months to complete. The result of all this is 1,600 cases of wine. In a single year, MauiWine can produce 20,000 cases of pineapple wine.

All of MauiWine’s wines are grown and manufactured in Maui. From the growing of the grapes to processing and bottling, MauiWine is one of the few wineries in the U.S. that manages the complete cycle of their business.

After 40 years of experimentation, MauiWine now has 16 of their 23 acres under vine. In fact, they performed a major overhaul to the vineyard in 2012, pulling out all the old vines that were planted in 1974. They also dug down three feet to prepare the soil for the new plantings.

Growing grapes is a complex process, and many elements can contribute to success or a challenge: daytime temperatures, nighttime temperatures and rain. The volcanic soil beneath the vineyard is one of MauiWine’s best advantages. The volcanic soil contributes to maintaining the acidity for their very balanced cool-climate wines like Rose, Viognier, Grenache, Chenin Blanc and Syrah.

“As far as grape-growing, it’s the unique climate we have that is uncharacteristic for vinifera [grapes],” said MauiWine marketing director Joseph Hegele. “It presents new and unfamiliar challenges in grape growing, things that are unique to us. In many ways, the challenges and difficulties in grape growing are also our strengths and what makes our wine’s distinct and interesting.”

This past May, MauiWine brought on a new vintner. Rachel Joy arrived just in time to prepare for harvest season. She has a chemistry degree from the University of Massachusetts and more than 10 years of experience working in the wine industry for Newton Vineyards, Jamison Ranch, Don Sebastiani & Sons and Delegate Estate Wines.

When it comes to pastas and mains, I’m irrevocably drawn to the specials, so don’t rule those out either. The pan roasted branzino is a gorgeous plate of fish with fingerling potatoes, broccolini, lemon butter and Italian parsley.

The Taverna team has also done a tremendous job with their cocktails, wine and beer. They have beautiful hand-crafted cocktails that even the biggest spirits geeks can appreciate, as well as making some of the most approachable libations that pair remarkably well with everything on the menu. What I like to do is gravitate toward a spirit and pluck my cocktail from the list that way. Their negroni menu never disappoints me–bringing spirits and liqueurs together in one concoction is tricky, but they make it look easy and attractive at the same time. You can also get refreshed by

feel. The floor plan is open–you can gaze across the entire space–but your own table somehow remains intimate.

Tomato is a primary here, but the devil is in the details. The tomato soup is killer, I wish I could take jars of it with me. The tomato is in the minestrone, meatball, lasagna, pizza and caprese. Stettler and the team at Taverna do awe-inspiring things with the tomato.

“It’s real simple,” he says. “I start with great local tomatoes and quality ingredients. I just don’t overthink it and I don’t rush it.”

The fresh Taverna woodstone oven-baked house bread is something my daughter always looks forward to. In fact, it’s one of her favorite places to eat. What I like is that even though there are enough familiar dishes here, there are also plenty of exciting exotic things to try as well.

t’s one thing to say that Italian cuisine is comfort food, and yet entirely another to experience the Italian delights created by Chef Roger Stettler at Taverna. Italiano is inherently comforting, belly-filling pastas drenched in rich cream sauces and meaty marinaras, but Stettler elevates comfort a few notches, adding elegance with the quality ingredients he likes to work with.

of course,” says Stettler. “After that, I would say tomato, arugula, semolina, basil, parsley and olive oil. It’s home cooking like my mother and grandmother used to cook. It’s simple, great food, comforting to any palate. It’s soul food.”

In March, Taverna opened in Kapalua, completely revamping the space that was last Village Cafe and Sweet Shop. The new look is modern but cozy–the quintessential zone to settle in for a good meal. The exterior architecture is rustic, reminiscent of a log cabin. The dining room is spacious, with cushioned, communal bench seating here and there, which adds to the family

a hearts of palm salad. The seafood salad has also been a favorite since they opened.

It’s full of generous portions of cooked and chilled lobster, fish, tako, shrimp and scallops, with some greens and a white balsamic emulsion. The fried capers add a bit of light, crisp acid.

The menu is organized into antipasti (apps, soups, salads), share plates (pizza, meatballs, olives, artisan cold cuts and cheese), primi (pasta and risotto) and piatti principali (mains). My advice is to give yourself time to graze, as there are so many great things to try on the menu. The pizza bianca is one of my favorite share plates, with its panchetta bits and roasted pear meeting over arugula and gorgonzola. The fritto misto is also popular.

“Our most popular dishes are tomato soup, Taverna lasagna, spaghetti carbonara, seafood salad, carpaccio, Margherita pizza, branzino and ossobuco,” says Stettler. “But everyone has to try

their bubbly spritzer menu, which has six different cocktails on it.

“Taverna is a great neighborhood restaurant–comforting, satisfying and affordable,” says Stettler. “We love to see that satisfying smile on everyone’s faces when they leave.”

Taverna gives us a lot to love. On Mondays from 5-6pm, kama‘aina can score half off their entrees. Wednesdays, everyone gets half off wine by the bottle, and half off wines by the glass at bar. Tuesdays, try the three-course lasagne dinner for $35, and on Sundays try the slow-roasted prime rib for $29 with mashed potatoes and asparagus. t’s not every day that we get Reggae royalty like Sly & Robbie and the Taxi Gang coming to Maui.

These guys are legends in the business–together, they’ve produced more than 50,000 songs. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare hooked up in the 1970s, establishing themselves as the rhythm team for breakout Reggae albums like The Right Time (1976) by The Mighty Diamonds.

Sly and Robbie have been churning out definitive and innovative beats ever since.

They produced “Hey Baby” for No Doubt, “Murder She Wrote” for Chaka Demus & Pliers, among other recognizable songs for those artists and so many more. They also have their own label–Taxi Records– and have performed with nearly every great name in Reggae.

In 1984, the Grammy Awards added Reggae as a category, and that year Sly and Robbie won their first of several. Now they’ll play for us for one night only: 8pm on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Maui Theatre in Lahaina. It’s part of the Maui Theatre Music Icon Series: Tribute to Legends of Reggae.

Hawaii’s Reggae Ambassador Marty Dread will be there, as well, to celebrate the exclusive release of his new album

Magnificent!

Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Magnificent Seven’ remake is a great western extravaganza Rated PG-13 / 132 Min.

T

he key to Antoine Fuqua’s remake of John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (which is a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai) is that it genuinely loves the western genre.

Although westerns were, at one point, second only to musicals as the most popular type of movie, their appearance in movie theaters is now awfully rare. When they do pop up, the films in question tend to be dark reconstructions and bleak commentaries on the desperation and moral compromises made in the wild west. I love Unforgiven and The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, although they come across more like reflective, post-modernist responses to the tropes of Cowboys and Indians movies than the real thing. While John Wayne made serious-minded classics (most notably John Ford’s The Searchers), his rootin’ tootin’ shootin’ movies tended to be escapist fare with a sense of fun. Although Fuqua’s re-telling of the classic story has an alarming amount of carnage, it’s a thrilling,

violent ode to classic westerns.

Denzel Washington, standing in for Yul Brynner, plays Chisolm, a gunslinger hired to defend a town from a ruthless tyrant named Bogue (well played by Peter Saarsgaard). Chisolm rounds up a team of motley, somewhat dubious but skilled killers. Among the team Chisolm assembles includes a card-playing scoundrel (Chris Pratt), a legendary gunslinger (Ethan Hawke), a burly wild man (Vincent D’Onofrio) and a Mohawk-sporting warrior (Martin Sensmeier). Their mission of revenge and justice seems impossible, as there’s only seven of them against dozens of Bogue’s men.

Fuqua’s recent The Equalizer queasily tried to fuse a nasty, blood-soaked revenge tale with a warm and fuzzy depiction of its murderous protagonist. Turns out The Equalizer is an advocate for the Boys and Girls Club of America. I realize that this reflects who Washington is in real life, but that movie felt like an odd platform for a noble cause.

On the other hand, Fuqua really had his heart in this one. He clearly loves westerns, as this isn’t a neo-western or another grim commentary on the horse opera. This is akin to

the recent 3:10 To Yuma and a better western than either of Quentin Tarantino’s last two films. I enjoy bleak, modern westerns and was among the few who saw and admired Jane Got A Gun earlier this year.Yet, Fuqua has taken a non-cynical, transparently affectionate approach and made a gosh darn, no joke, great old-fashioned Hollywood extravaganza.

I should end have ended that last sentence with “Yee Haw!” but I will restrain myself.

Washington exudes maximum charisma, which is no surprise, but he generously holds court without upstaging the rest of the ensemble. Pratt’s character is especially striking, as he provides welcome comic relief but displays a drunken mean streak.

Hawke, D’Onofrio and Hayley Atwell are all first-rate, though the characterizations are slim. The movie is 132 minutes long but I

would have been happier with an even longer running time. The characters and their foolproof tale are so enjoyable, 20 more minutes would have been fine with me.

While the structure of the story and a reprise of Elmer Bernstein’s classic score harkens back to the prior 1960 film, this is a film for its time. The updates and tweaks to the story work. There isn’t a static or uninteresting shot in the entire film, as Mauro Fiore’s cinematography is always moving, capturing great visions and meant for the big screen.

It’s not perfect (particularly the annoyingly obvious CGI in that last shot) but comes close. This is a far more exciting action movie than anything released last summer. It’s also a great western, which makes it a true rarity. ■

For good or ill, Libras often see things in terms of personal gain. It’s that whole scale thing; you’re constantly weighing, evaluating, and judging. This is how you’ve gotten a reputation as shallow social climbers, who only act out of pure self-interest. I know that’s not truly accurate, of course; just because you can’t help seeing things in that light doesn’t mean you always have to act on that basis. Does it? Prove your naysayers wrong this week (if only just for yourself ) by doing lots of good that you won’t get anything for–not even credit.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Some people are incredibly eager to always leap onto the next big thing; they buy the newest, coolest gadgets as soon as they can afford them, watch the hip shows, wear trendy clothing, and so on. These people are almost never Scorpios. It’s not that you’re traditionalists or sticks-in-the-mud. It’s just that you can’t be bothered with that shit until it comes more naturally into your life. If it turns out a TV show is really good and you missed out, you’ll find a way to catch up on it. And you look good in any old clothing without hardly trying (most people just want to tear it off, anyway). Lately you’re more inclined to act more like the rest of us, but I wish you wouldn’t. Just stay cool. Don’t get swept up in any crazes that sweep past you this week. Not a one of them is worth it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

If you’re eligible for an award, you’re liable to win one this week. If not, it’s quite likely you’re going to get some kind of recognition for who you are and the way you do things. Enjoy the well-deserved accolades, but beware of them as well. There’s nothing more likely to constipate your evolutionary process more than praise. Admit it, you’ve been having more of an urge to be social and go out. Why have you dug your heels in so much and resisted it so adamantly? I know you’re putting off fun now so you can have more later, but you’ve got to practice having fun all along the way, or you won’t know how to manage when you finally give yourself the freedom to really enjoy your life. Get out there and party a little this week. Consider it an investment in your happy future.

Why not walk around pretending you have superpowers? Or a billion dollars that you’re just waiting until the right moment to use? I’m a big fan of people reinventing their realities to make them more interesting, and you are especially good at it. The trick is letting it be a game and not cross the line into self-delusion. If you play the game right, your world becomes vastly more interesting (for everyone), you get to be more dynamic and explore a wider range of possible selves, and magic can actually happen.

Guess what else? This week, it’s not just fun, it’s also, strangely, a route to changing your life for real.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Recently I told you to focus on the little things, and I’m glad I did. It’s amazing what a tremendous effect the smallest detail can have on you sensitive Fish.

I’ve seen you fundamentally swayed by a gentle autumn breeze, a wink from a stranger, or a snippet of a song heard in passing. One of the problems with being so sensitive is that you can take pleasure in such gorgeous tiny moments, but you’re also saddened that so many around you cannot. Make remedying this incongruity this week’s task. If you can teach just

one person–or better yet, three or four–how to experience rapture from the color of an autumn leaf (or something similar), you’ll have done your job.

Don’t rush things. In fact, since the roads are so slippery at the moment (and of course I’m not talking about actual driving), it’d be a good idea to stay well under the speed limit.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Although you’ve undoubtedly had some wild moments in your life, and taken tremendous risks, you haven’t really done so lately. Your recent life has been a lot tamer and more cautious than some of your previous chapters. Your biggest adventure these days is trying a new breakfast cereal. But I hope you’re not settling into some lameass old lady routine; you’re much too young to get so crotchety and set in your ways. Use this week to really bust out and get wild. Take some risks.
