Otherwise, none of this will ever change.

NEW FISH FINALLY DESCRIBED Speaking of fish, using specimens collected in 2009 and again in 2015 at the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, scientists with the Bishop Museum and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have published an official description of a new species of butterflyfish in the journal ZooKeys, NOAA announced on Sept. 6.

“Butterflyfish are the glamour fish of the coral reefs,” said Richard L. Pyle, a Bishop Museum scientist and lead author on the publication. “They are colorful, beautiful, and have been very well-studied worldwide. Finding a new species of butterflyfish is a rare event.”

The name of the new fish comes in part from a Hawaii Island diver who has long assisted the scientists who’ve studied the new species.

On Sept. 8, the Associated Press dropped a bombshell of a report on Hawaii’s fishing industry: much of the fish we eat in Hawaii is caught by foreign crews working under deplorable conditions that match the definition of indentured servitude. Here’s an excerpt of the AP’s findings: “Hundreds of undocumented men are employed in this unique U.S. fishing fleet, due to a federal loophole that allows them to work but exempts them from most basic labor protections,” states the AP report. “ Many come from impoverished Southeast Asian and Pacific nations to take the dangerous jobs, which can pay as little as 70 cents an hour.

“With no legal standing on U.S. soil, the men are at the mercy of their American captains on American-flagged, American-owned vessels, catching prized swordfish and ahi tuna,” the story continued. “Since they don’t have visas, they are not allowed to set foot on shore. The entire system, which contradicts other state and federal laws, operates with the blessing of highranking U.S. lawmakers and officials, an Associated Press investigation found.”

Angry yet? Well, how about reading this assessment of Hawaii’s fishing industry from one activist quoted in the story: “Most of the fish caught and sold in Hawaii is done by the use of exploiting migrant workers in what looks to be a human trafficking scheme legitimized by our own laws,” said Kathryn Xian, who runs the nonprofit Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery.

Of Hawaii’s three elected federal officials, only Senator Mazie Hirono is mentioned in the story (though she’s not quoted directly): “Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, acknowledges the fishermen’s liberties are limited and has unsuccessfully proposed an amendment that would allow them to fly into the country,” states the AP story. “It’s a move that would fix a widely accepted paradox. Currently, even though the men never legally enter the United States, the government provides a transit visa that lets them exit through Honolulu’s airport.”

When the story broke, I reached out to Senators Hirono and Brian Schatz, as well as Congressional Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, for comment on the AP’s story. On Sept. 14, all three finally issued statements: “I am deeply disturbed by the situation described in the Associated Press' report on conditions in Hawaii's longline fishing fleet,” Hirono said. “It is completely unacceptable that the inhumane treatment of any workers–foreign or not–is legal under U.S. federal law. I am engaging the full range of stakeholders, including federal agencies and the industry, to determine the extent of the problem and the appropriate course of action to address it. I welcome the industry’s initial steps to respond to this unacceptable situation, and am encouraged they are taking this seriously. I am committed to finding solutions that improve conditions for workers across the fleet and recognize the role industry can play in addressing this matter.”

As for Schatz, he said that he's "alarmed and disturbed by the conditions reported by the Associated Press. In addition to working on expeditiously and independently confirming the veracity of the reports, I have directed my staff to do a comprehensive review of what available tools the Coast Guard as well as the Departments of Justice, Labor, and Homeland Security have under current law to ensure the safety, human rights, and dignity of these crewmen. The crew on these vessels need immediate protections, which is why we are working with the administration to develop a decisive, aggres-

sive, and appropriate response in addition to researching legislative options.”

And Gabbard said that “The AP’s report that hundreds of foreign workers are being subjected to human rights abuses and inhumane conditions just off our shores is deeply disturbing. This is a problem that has been ignored for years, and must be immediately addressed.

We are working with major stakeholders to determine the most expedient course of action to put an end to this unacceptable situation, and protect the safety and human rights of these crewmen, making sure that fair labor standards are enforced for all workers."

Five days earlier, on Sept. 9, state Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui, sent a letter to state Attorney General Douglas Chin asking for an legal opinion on the alleged labor practices involving the Honolulu fishing industry.

“I am extremely alarmed by recent reports of the gross mistreatment of workers aboard American fishing vessels right here in our Aloha State,” Ing said in a Sept. 9 statement.

“If these investigations hold any validity, we must act swiftly to end any human rights violations occurring on our docks.

“Without any legal recourse, millions of undocumented workers suffer through starvation wages and inhumane work environments across America,” Ing continued. “It’s an issue too often ignored by mainstream politics. We can all agree that any abuse of any human being has no place in our Aloha State.

These investigations reveal why we must act now.”

The Associated Press story makes clear that many stores and restaurants out here get their fish from these boats. But there are places on Maui that serve fish caught in local waters

President Barack Obama's recent expansion of the marine monument wasn’t lost on the researchers, either.

“This new discovery illustrates the conservation value of very large marine protected areas,” said NOAA researcher Randall Kosaki, the paper’s co-author. “Not only do they protect the biodiversity that we already know about, they also protect the diversity we’ve yet to discover. UH MAUI VICE CHANCELLOR GOING TO JAPAN

NEW HAWAII DATA BOOK IS OUT The 2015 State of Hawaii Data Book came out on Aug. 17 with a bevy of statistic that reflect changes in everything from population and education to labor and tourism. The resource–a product of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism–is available on the DBEDT website and may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.

The state’s Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, labor, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.

“The state’s Data Book provides comprehensive information from all sources, both public and private,” said DBEDT Director Luis P. Salaveria. “It’s the most popular product on the DBEDT website and has been consistently produced for 47 years.”

The data in the 2015 book reveals that about 60 percent of people moving to Hawaii from the Mainland were between the ages of 20 and 44; in 2015 there were 1,047 licensed child care centers in the state, double the number of centers in 2004 (523); and Foreign Agricultural Exports, on a farm receipts-basis, have grown from $151.5 million in 2000 to $400.4 million in 2014.

“We try to add more data series to the Data Book to accommodate a wide range of data needs,” said Chief State Economist Dr. Eugene Tian. “Among the new data series in this Data Book are the Hawaii homes purchased by origin of buyers.”

According to the data, a majority of the more than 19,000 home purchases in 2015 were by local buyers (78 percent) with an average sales price of $546,146; followed by mainland buyers (19 percent) with an average sales price of $751,210; and lastly foreign buyers (3 percent) with an average sales price of $783,774.

In the income realm, the data reveals that the occupation with greatest employment in Hawaii in 2015 was “retail salesperson” with 24,770 employment and $11.46 average hourly salary. The next highest occupation was “waiters and waitresses” with 15,299 employment, followed by cashiers (14,790 employment) and general office clerks (13,660 employment).

And when it comes to expenditures, the numbers reflect the crunch many Hawaii residents feel in their checkbooks. Accord-

ing to the Regional Price Parities from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the “all Items” price level in Hawaii was 16.8 percent higher than the overall national price level in 2014; “goods” component was 8.9 percent higher while “services: rents” component was 58.4 percent higher than the national average in the year.

DBEDT’s Research and Economic Analysis Division (READ) also maintains the historical series of tables and updates the data continuously throughout the year.

UH MAUI COLLEGE GETS TWO FEDERAL GRANTS UH Maui College was recently awarded $3.7 million in two federal grants–with

the money to be dispersed over the next five years. One grant went to a UH Maui’s music studies program, and the other will be used for a college preparation program.

Dr. Keola Donaghy (Music Studies and Institute of Hawaiian Music) received a $2.5 million U.S. Department of Education Title III grant for Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions.

The money–$500,000 a year for five years – will be used to renovate the college’s recording room and create a professional quality recording studio. The money also will help deliver the Institute of Hawaiian Music’s Academic Subject Certificate (A.S.C.) in Hawaiian Music to Molokai; and create a new A.S.C. in Hawaiian Performing Arts. In addition, the grant will help fund a new curriculum for Music Studies that will bring Hawaiian content and pedagogy to all music classes.

“I think it is an amazing opportunity for UHMC to strengthen and expand its programs for students interested in Hawaiian music and performing arts such as hula, whether as a

career, for personal growth, or to contribute to our community of practitioners of these vital arts,” Donaghy said. “It also advances the UH system’s goal to be a model indigenous serving institution.”

Melissa Bonnin, Grant Development Management Coordinator, secured a $1.2 million, five-year Talent Search grant, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program; the TRIO Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.

The grant will be used for a college prep program that will serve underrepresented middle and high students of Maui County. Program services include career exploration, academic advising, college tours, support in applying for college, and help in all steps of the college admissions process, including securing financial support for college. Ultimately, the program encourages students to graduate from high school, enroll in college, and complete a postsecondary education program.

“This grant will be a great community resource to increase college access by starting the college prep process for underrepresented students in middle school,” Bonnin said. “I am excited that UH Maui College was awarded the program and thankful for the team of people who made this happen.

The mission is part of the state’s ongoing economic effort to provide support to educational institutions and businesses that provide academic programs to foreign students.

The 38 member delegation also includes First Lady Dawn Amano Ige representing the Office of the Governor and representatives from the Hilo, Leeward, Kapiolani Community College, Manoa and West Oahu campuses of the University of Hawaii system.

Governor David Ige said, “International student exchanges serve as a catalyst for the mutual appreciation of cultures, and the skill and knowledge gained during these experiences are important characteristics in developing global competence in our youth.”

Nakama will be a presenter at the 2016 Education USA Expo to be held at the Ochanomizu Sola City Conference Center where 1,000 Japanese high school students interested in studying abroad are expected to attend.

Nakama has also been invited to a reception hosted by U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy who will launch A Broader View, an Embassy video project to promote studying in the U.S. that features prominent UH alumni currently living in Japan.

In addition to the Study Hawaii promotion, Nakama will be participating in a “sister-university” signing ceremony with the University of the Ryukyus on the Island of Okinawa and conducting two TeamUp Roadmap relationship building sessions with Fukuoka Women’s University and in Maui County’s sister city of Fukuyama, meeting with Fukuyama City University.

The Mission to Japan, Sept. 7-17, is sponsored and coordinated by the Study Hawaii Educational Consortium, the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism and the U. S. Embassy in Tokyo.

The phenomenal Japanese singer Hatsune Miku (100 million YouTube hits) is coming off of a sold-out, 10-city North American concert tour with high-energy audiences (blockslong lines to get in; raucous crowd participation; hefty souvenir sales), except that “she” isn’t real. Hatsune Miku is a projected hologram on stage singing and dancing (but her band is human), and her May show in Dallas, according to a Dallas Observer review, typically ignited frenzied fans who know the show’s “every beat, outfit... and glow stick colorchange.” Her voice, a synthesized “vocaloid,” is crafted in pitch, timbre and timing to sound human. (The latest PlayStation brings Hatsune Miku into the home by virtual reality.)

On Aug. 11, the federal government’s Drug Enforcement Agency famously refused to soften the regulation of marijuana, leaving it (with heroin) as a harsh “Schedule I” drug because, citing Food and Drug Administration findings, it has “no medical use.” However, as the Daily Caller pointed out, another federal agency–Department of Health and Human Services–obtained a U.S. patent in 2003 for marijuana-derived cannabinoids, which HHS pointed out have several medical uses (as an antioxidant and for limiting neurological damage following strokes).

PRIORITIES “A dog has better protection than our kids,” lamented an Oregon prosecutor in May because, unlike the pet law, the “child abuse” law requires proof the victim experienced “substantial” pain–which a young child often lacks vocabulary to describe. (Simply showing welts and bruises is insufficient, the Court of Appeals has ruled.) And that same Oregon Court of Appeals ruled in June that Thomas Wade, 44, was not guilty of a crime when in 2013 he unzipped his pants, reached inside, and at that point cursed the woman he had confronted in a public park. “Distasteful,” wrote the Court, but it was an exercise of Wade’s free speech right.

TEXAS! In August, Houston defense lawyer Jerry Guerinot announced his retirement from death-penalty cases, leaving him with a perfect record (for that area of his practice): He lost every single time. Twenty-one clients received the death penalty, and 10 have been executed (so far). He made no excuses, pointing out that “gang members, serial killers and sociopaths” were entitled to representation, too, and that he has taken more than 500 noncapital cases to trial (with, presumably, more success).

TOURISTS GONE WILD Tourism officials in Iceland recently posted “hundreds” of signs at visitor attractions showing a squatting person in silhouette, with a small pile on the ground underneath–

and the familiar diagonal line (indicating “don’t”). Critics of the signs reluctantly admit Iceland’s chronic shortage of public restrooms. And in a YouTube clip released in July, a Disney fan posted shot after shot of “rude” Chinese tourists at Shanghai Disneyland, coaxing their small children to urinate in public rather than in restrooms. Also, the Tourism Bureau of Japan’s Hokkaido island recently rewrote its etiquette guide for visitors to underscore the inappropriateness of “belching or flatulence” in public.

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED A New York Times reporter, describing in June the rising prices of prescription pharmaceuticals, noted that a popular pain reliever (probably describing oxycodone) was available on the Paterson, New Jersey, black market for $25 a pill, while heroin was going for $2 a baggie. And the economic growth rate in Ireland for 2015 was revised–upward–in July. Growth of its gross domestic product was originally estimated at 7.8 percent, but subsequently–adding the paper value of several “inversions” (U.S. companies “moving” to Ireland to reduce U.S. taxes)–Ireland found that it was actually growing at 26.7 percent.

AWESOME! Investigators revealed in July that an offduty Aurora, Colorado, sheriff’s deputy had justifiably fired his gun to resist a parking lot mugging–and that, furthermore, one of the bullets from Deputy Jose Marquez’s gun had gone straight into the barrel of one of the handguns pointed at him. The investigators called the shot “one in a billion.” And Matthew Lavin, 39, drew internet acclaim in July after he was gored through his left thigh while “running with the bulls” in the annual spectacle in Pamplona, Spain. Interviewed in his hospital bed by Madrid’s The Local, he called it “the best time ever” and said he looked forward to another run next year.

IRONIES Gary Durham, 40, was shot to death during a heated road-rage incident in Plant City, Florida, on Aug. 10. Durham had served 10 years in prison after an aggressive road-rage episode in 2001 in which he pursued another driver and knocked him to the ground, causing the man to hit his head, fatally, on the pavement. (Included in Durham’s 2002 sentence was an order to take anger management classes.)

WAIT WHAT? A nine-year-old girl named Irina won a contest in Berezniki, Russia, in August for letting mosquitos bite her more often that they bit other contestants. It is the signature event of the annual Russian Mosquito Festival, and her 43 hits were enough to earn her the title of “tastiest girl.” The annual Great Texas Mosquito Festival in Clute, Texas (south of Houston), apparently has nothing comparable. ■

laze Anderson says skate park culture changed his life.

Changed it so radically, so passionately, that he made skate park culture his very occupation. And in the process, he’s helped out a whole generation of Northshore Maui kids.

“I grew up in the valley in LA,” says Anderson. “There were these skate parks there that we would go to, by seventh grade one of my buddies was already going pro. Growing up in the dogtown area, we all skated since we were, like, seven years old. There was a skate park called Aloha Skate Park and the concrete was all pink and it was all themed with the whale bowl, the grand canyon bowl. We just lived there. Our parents would drop us off with a bunch of hot dog and slushie money and we stayed for hours.”

Last week, after a period of deterioration, the Stonewave Skate Park reopened, cleaner and better than ever. Today, we can say with ease that the skate park is an integral part of the positive social and physical development of youth and culture in Paia, but it wasn’t always thought of that way. The skate park and the Paia Youth and Cultural Center (PYCC) enjoy a symbiotic relationship, though Susun White, the center’s executive director, admits that at first she didn’t see the need for a skate park.

“Blaze Anderson was here, he worked for the youth center for 12 and half years,” says White. “He wanted the skate park. I

didn’t want the skate park. He came to me one day and said we should build a skate park here and my exact words were ‘Not on my watch.’ Back then, all I could see was broken arms and kids hitting concrete.

But it has ended up being one of the best things for the youth center because it brought in families. We have a rule that if you are younger than nine years old you can skate, but your parent has to stay with you. It was an amazing thing: we got fami-

lies involved, seeing what this is all about.

We have so many kids celebrating their ninth birthdays here.”

Kids have to be nine before they can join the Paia Youth and Cultural Center.

For lots of the youth who skate at the park or have learned to skate at the park, it’s become a rite of passage. And they can’t wait to get in.

“Well, you know in the beginning kids literally lived here,” says White. “I would

never have met their parents or only see them when they come to sign their membership paperwork. We would have open house and nobody would come. It’s hard to get parental involvement–parents are busy. But now with the skate park, that’s changed. Family involvement makes it more of a community center. It also makes people realize more that we are a private nonprofit and we have to literally raise anywhere from $125,000 to $150,000 a year from the community. So we have had more community support, too.”

White credits Anderson with spearheading a lot of the skate culture on the island in the 1990s. He saw the value of bringing it to the youth center. As for Anderson, he gives credit to some surprising individuals.

“Believe it or not, a big reason there are skate parks in Maui is because of Charmaine Tavares, Kimo Apana and Martha Ferris,” says Anderson. “And from back in the day, Darrell and Michelle Ota were the ones that help build all of the wooden skate ramps–the very first skate parks that got me into the Maui scene.”

Anderson’s dream of getting the skate park built was never easy. He had to sell the benefits, and get the funding.

“It was a 1996,” he says. “Martha Ferris was Charmaine Tavares’ right-hand lady when she was the head of Park and Recreation back then. Ferris was also the president of the Maui Skateboard Association. She came to me and said they needed help getting a park going for this area, and

wanted help with the association. I said the best place for it would be right here at the youth center because we could watch the kids. I ended up taking over the presidency of the association as well. At the time, the Wailuku skate park was closing and was getting dismantled. So we got help from prison workers and took the old ramps and set them up here while we were working on this design. We also started working on the Kahului skate park.”

His big challenge back then was finding insurance.

“In 1997, we did a 12-hour skate-athon to raise funds for the skate park here in Paia,” says Anderson. “Then we moved all the ramps up behind Eddie Tam to do a Makawao skate park. I was running all those, and we had to chase our own insurance. There was no county insurance at the time. I had to charge kids two to five bucks to skate–any way we could collect it. I ran that for a while, and then Mike Morris came into the YMCA and he wanted to get into the skate parks. So I created the Skate Park Action Maui (SPAM) organization, and he paid me as a director to have them go over to the county parks and cover the insurance under their YMCA umbrella. I managed and directed that for a few years.”

Eventually, they got the funding to do the Stonewave Skate Park. In 2004, it finally opened.

“The skate park has a huge effect on this place with the economics,” says White. “We have the poorest of the poor–kids living on the beach–and the wealthiest of kids on the planet, all in this one space. They don’t know that about each other. I don’t think there is any other

place in the world that has that kind of dynamic going on. We have a huge diversity of culture and race. It’s been great to see that. In the beginning we had a lot of racial clashing and fights. It’s all gone away. It happened organically. They realize they are all the same.”

The Paia Youth and Cultural Center boasts a membership of 450 to 500 kids a year. They have their own commercial kitchen and cooking and meal program

deteriorating. For a while, they spraypainted areas the kids couldn’t use. But after a while, that became a safety hazard.

Anderson decided to talk to RCMC, the company that originally built the park. Repairs weren’t going to be cheap.

“I started talking to RCMC about the repairs and got the numbers,” says Anderson.

“We needed $50,000. Believe it or not, the county has a skate park repair budget.

As it worked out, the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation paid for 95 percent of the supplies and materials. White and Anderson put together a Gofundme project and the community poured in support. Michael Baskin of Paia Inn donated the lodging for RCMC workers. Nuestro Futuro donated $10,000. The kids at Paia Youth and Cultural Center got permission to sell hats and solicit donations at a table next to Milagros, which raised $3,752.25. Other donations came in from Flatbread, Cafe Mambo, The Wine Corner, Hana Ranch Provisions and Maui Roller Girls.

Last week, Stonewave Skate Park officially reopened, with new coping and a fresh paint job, all courtesy of the same youth center kids who’ll be skating there. Which was exactly Anderson’s point all along.

“For me, I have always known how much of a saving grace it was having the social environment where we could be independent,” says Anderson. “We didn’t have to be like a football player with the whole team to rely on. We just got to be ourselves and express ourselves. There is so much expression with how you dress, what skateboard you rode and how you rode. It was all about the music and the fun and I really wanted to create that here. And we did. [Though] I couldn’t have done it without my wife Kelly Anderson. She sacrificed a lot. But now I have a 16-year-old son that skates here.

They also offer a youth video and photography program called the Hekili Multimedia Arts, and the Stonewave Skate Park to run. Lots of little kids learn to skate here because it’s the only adultmonitored skate park on Maui.

Recently, PYCC officials discovered that Stonewave’s coping and corners were badly

it by a certain time for the fiscal year. They told us in late April or May that they had $25,000 for us, but we couldn’t get everything processed by the right time before the end of the fiscal year. So then those funds got recycled back into the budget. And this year’s budget didn’t have that line item. So then some funds came from the unplanned county maintenance fund, and they gave us a quarter of what they originally funded.”

OUR GUIDE TO MAUI’S WONDERFUL TACO TRUCKS It was just a couple weeks ago that “Latinos for Trump” organizer Marco Gutierrez went on MSNBC and warned that unless America elects Donald Trump to be president, “you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.” Oh wow–could we?

Please? Because right now, Maui doesn’t have nearly that many taco trucks. It’s a great selection, sure, but we’re a long way from finding one on every corner. Some serve up traditional tacos while others offer their own twist, but all the trucks here sell delicious, wonderful, Mexican street food. To make it easier for you to find them, we offer this humble guide to all things Maui taco trucks.

SOUTH MAUI

JAWZ FISH TACO Jawz has been in its spot at Makena beach for nearly two decades. It’s like an oasis in the Southside desert. They have two trucks out there: the yellow one on the main road, and the black one that parks inside the first entrance of Makena Beach Park.

Jawz tacos come on soft white corn tortillas with their incredible cilantro rice, cheese, cabbage and creamy salsa. Taco proteins include fish, shrimp, chicken breast, steak and shredded pork. HORHITOS Horhitos was voted Maui’s Best Food Truck in our Best of Maui issue for the last two years. You will find it tucked into the front corner of Kihei Marketplace facing South Kihei Road and across from Kalama Park. Horhitos specializes in owner Jorge Galaviz’s Mexican cuisine. Ono Tacos is posted along Honoapi‘ilani Highway under a big banyan tree next to the old Sugar Cane Train station. Their walk-up taco stand has a menu printed in Spanish and English and includes asada, pollo, al pastor, birria and veggie tacos for $3.50 each. Pescado and camaron tacos are $4. The truck has a self-serve condiment bar with chopped onions, cilantro, pickled peppers and several different kinds of hot sauce. The menu also includes tortas, burritos, quesadilla, hot dogs and taco combo plates with rice and beans. Ono Tacos also has a sign pointing to Kohola Brewery–it’s a gentle suggestion, but a good one: you can take your lunch or dinner there and pair it with one of their 10 beers. Driving down Wainee Street in Lahaina, I discovered a burgeoning food truck/ parking lot across from the Maria Lanakila Catholic Cemetery. That’s precisely where I found TaquerEATa serving its new-school tacos. Owner Gina Clements’ cute little grey and white trailer makes tacos to order and specializes in breakfast tacos. The Migas has scrambled eggs with bits of corn tortilla, jalapenos and onion with cheese in a flour tortilla, while the Three Alarm is a similar taco with eggs, pickled jalapeno, potato and chipotle. Both are $3.95. Clements also has a build-your-own taco section where you can choose from a slew of toppings like egg, beans, sausage and bacon, with tortilla options like whole wheat and gluten-free corn ($2.50 to $4). 808 Ch Antojitos comes alive at night in the food truck parking on Wainee Street in Lahaina.

Antojitos has two red trucks with their signature “CH” in a heart painted on them. They park them a few stalls away from each other, stringing lights between them over tables and chairs.

It makes for a festive environment to enjoy their tacos and all their other specialties. Antojitos is a nod to Mexico’s street food culture–it means Mexican snack foods. They make tacos with pollo, al pastor and chorizo for $2.50, and pescado, asada and suadero for $3 (plates with rice and beans are $7.50/$8). It’s all delicious and served on corn tortillas, just like the food stands in Mexico City. They offer quesadillas, which are made on their housemade tortilla in squash blossom or mushroom. If there’s one taco truck on Maui with a sense of humor, this is it. El Taco Borracho has to, because it’s the late night food truck in Lahaina Town that’s open until 1:30am, when things usually start to get silly. You will also find El Taco Borracho, which means “the drunken taco,” at the Kihei Fourth Friday town parties. Their taco drunken taco mascot is bleary eyed in a sombrero, and the truck’s twitter feed (@ElTacoBorracho1) includes jokes about the mota smells at the reggae concert. Hilarity aside, their soft shell tacos of fish, shrimp, carne asada, chorizo, chicharron and chicken ($3.75) are delicious and hit the spot whether you’ve had a few drinks or not. MAUI 8 WONDER This little taco trailer at the ever-expanding food truck park located across the street from Costco has been there since the beginning. In fact, Maui 8 Wonder has also parked at the Maui Swap Meet on Saturdays for many years. Their specialty, three tacos for $5, makes them a popular choice with options in carne asada, bbq pork, chicken, salmon and vegan, topped with spinach as the green. Want sour cream and cheese? They’re just a buck more. Maui 8 Wonder also offers Diabla Shrimp and garlic shrimp plates for $10, the Wonder Burrito for $8, fajitas and ceviche for $7.

ISLAND TACOS Island Tacos is a pop-up taco stand in the corner of the parking lot at the Haiku Cannery. They offer flour or corn tortillas for all of their fillings: fish (ono), pork, chicken (all $7) or vegetarian ($6). You get black beans, avocado, cabbage, cheese, sour cream, cilantro, salsa and jalapeno for topping. Served on a flour tortilla, this is a pretty big taco. There are also a million bottled hot sauces to try. This tropical taco outpost is also known for Thai Iced Tea ($3) and they have tapioca pudding for dessert. They stock lots of canned and bottled sodas and drinks, too. Daily 11am-8pm.

MILAGROS The Milagros Food truck is a mobile extension of the scrumptious menu they offer in their Paia restaurant. While it doesn’t keep a permanent location or schedule anywhere, you can see it making appearances at events like the Made on Maui Festival and music concerts and the like. Or you can hire it for your own party. Keep an eye out for it at the Maui Brewing Company Kihei Tasting Room, where it appears on the food truck rotation schedule. The menu serves their tacos, of course, but all your Milagro’s other favorites are there, too. We wish they could serve their phenomenal Milagro’s Margarita’s, but we’re on Maui, which means the county Liquor Commission couldn’t possibly allow that.

CHINESE MOON FESTIVAL – The annual Chinese Moon Festival will take place at the Wo Hing Museum in Lahaina this Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17. Presented by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, the event will commemorate Chinese traditions and celebrate Maui’s locally grown produce.

Guests can explore feng shui, knot tying, calligraphy and authentic Chinese cooking with lots of awesome live demonstrations. Keiki can plant seeds and learn how to make paper lanterns, and all can enjoy Chinese moon cakes.

Flyboy Clint Eastwood’s ‘Sully’ is a soaring, old-fashioned winner ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 96 Min.

E

ach time Clint Eastwood makes a movie, it’s as though he were presenting a fresh challenge to himself. If you look at his body of work behind the camera, you’d see a filmmaker who cannot be tied down to one type of movie, is constantly taking risks and humbly adapts his approach to each project he takes on. Like John Huston before him, Eastwood is a fearless director with a clean-cut mode of storytelling and a restless manner of choosing films that are intriguingly unconnected.

There are thematic threads to all of Eastwood’s work but if one were to binge watch a stack of his movies, you might be astonished to realize they were all made by the same man. Seriously, check out Unforgiven, Play Misty For Me, Letters From Iwo Jima, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, A Perfect World and Hereafter. They’re all great and totally different. Eastwood’s most recent works include the failed musical Jersey Boys and the controversial blockbuster American Sniper. The best directors, ranging from

Martin Scorsese to Robert Altman, share this quality: their wide ranging love of varying film genres results in a playful body of work.

It’s a gift for us to see something we didn’t expect from an artist we grew up watching.

In Sully, Tom Hanks plays US Airways pilot Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who we meet after his legendary 2009 emergency landing on the Hudson River left him shell-shocked. Through subtle use of sound and especially clever cinematography, we see how Sully is an introvert whose world seems to be surrounding him.

Unwanted attention from the press and an investigation into his capabilities as a pilot haunt him. His wife (Laura Linney) struggles to keep it together at home, while his co-pilot (Aaron Eckhart, outstanding) is the only witness to Sullenberger’s remarkable performance in the cockpit.

Hanks’ portrait of a reserved, private man suddenly placed in the center of a media blitz and having to defend his outstanding service record, is beautifully understated. The film, and Hanks’ approach to the role, is similar to Hanks’ recent triumph in Captain Phillips. In both cases, the recreation of the central event is as-

tonishing but it’s the lead actor’s decision to give a quiet, lived-in portrayal of a real survivor that gives this its center.

If there’s a single filmmaker who clearly inspired Eastwood while making this, it’s Frank Capra. From the cheerful supporting characters to the quasi-courtroom climax, there’s an old fashioned quality to the storytelling. Eastwood’s direction is exceptional as always but it’s refreshing to see a film present its story with such nononsense clarity and top-notch production values (the cinematography and visual effects ought to be award contenders). Eastwood’s only indulgence is an amusing shot of Sullenberger jogging past a NYC movie theater playing Gran Torino.

We see the Hudson landing from different perspectives and, in every instance, the event is gripping and vivid. Hanks’ big

monologue during the climactic hearing manages to be his big showcase and still not come across like an actor’s grandstanding.

Eastwood found the perfect collaborator in Hanks, as both bring their expected professionalism, experience and understanding of human nature to their efforts.

The screenplay establishes a theme of Sullenberger’s “humanity” and the human element in his piloting being the greatest aspect (and not the robotics of the aircraft) that saved his plane. It’s this quality, the ability to look inward and not make this a gaudy spectacle, that also makes Eastwood’s film soar. While it falls a bit short of his previous film, with overly broad supporting roles and at least one dream sequence too many, Eastwood has once again delivered an astonishing film.

Not bad for an 86-year old. ■

It’s hard to describe weeks like this one, which will be infested with little things that will either mildly annoy or amuse you, but not really piss you off, or make you scream with laughter. I think of these middling periods as good practice time. Turn up the gain on your sense of humor. Try to find ways to smile at the petty shit that would normally irritate you. You’ll find the stuff that’d make you smile before could now potentially make you laugh out loud. Sure, people will think you’re crazier than they did, but so what? You’ve never cared about that shit. Crazier? So be it, as long as you’re happier, too.

But every once in awhile, it’s a valuable exercise to go without so that someone else can benefit–especially if you can do so without making a big ego deal out of it. While I’m talking about making a sacrifice I’ll mention this, too: a one-off is fine, if that’s all you can manage. But a regular habit would be far, far better.
