I love getting press releases that describe events already nearly a week old. That’s what happened last week when the Maui Police Department notified the public that they “will” conduct yet another test of body cameras for their officers.

“Beginning Thursday, August 18, 2016, the Plans, Training, Research & Development Section of the Maui Police Department will conduct a one month feasibility study on the use of the AXON bodyworn camera,” stated the news release, which wasn’t actually sent out until Aug. 24.

“The cameras will be field-tested by officers in the various Patrol Districts. The results of the study will assist the Maui Police Department in making informed decisions about the implementation of this technology.”

There are a host of issues associated with police officers wearing body cameras while they’re out in the field–most notably, there’s the question of when the officer wearing the camera can turn the cameras on and off, to say nothing of how the department stores all that footage (and whether it’s available for public inspection). Numerous departments on the Mainland have adopted such cameras, though their experiences have been mixed. Some report a considerable drop in citizen complaints against officers; others are still reporting very high incidents of officerinvolved shootings.

Over on Kauai, that island’s police office has already adopted body-worn cameras.

The powerful police union SHOPO (State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers) filed a complaint with the state Labor Relations Board in an attempt to gain greater authority over the use of the cameras, but in January of this year the board ruled in favor of the department. ■

On the morning of Friday, Aug. 26, Pacific Whale Foundation President Greg Kaufman sent out a news release stating that one of his boats spotted the first humpback whale of the season the day prior, in the waters just off Lahaina. But before you do any celebrating, Kaufman said the whale didn’t seem all that well.

“The brief video captured is a humpback encrusted with whale lice,” said Kaufman in the news release. “The animal appears uninjured and not entangled. It could be sick, starving or suffering from an internal blunt trauma injury. Whale lice are naturally occurring on humpback whales but tend to proliferate when a whale becomes weak or sick. It’s akin to death by a thousand bites. We are sending our research team out first thing in the morning to see if they can track the whale’s whereabouts.”

Kaufman added that this is the earliest sighting of a whale in Maui waters that he can remember. Whale season in Hawaii typically starts in September/October.

“Pacific Whale Foundation has tracked the first whale sighting since 1998,” stated the news release. “Previously, the earliest appearance recorded was on September 16 back in 2000. The majority of first sightings have taken place in October.”

According to the news release, the PWF vessel Ocean Quest was on a sunset dinner cruise on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the time of the sighting. They were about three quarters of a mile off the coast of Olowalu.

“The Coast Guard has been alerted and is requesting all boaters and water-users to be on the lookout,” stated the news release.

In a statement issued later that day, Malia Chow the superintendent of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, issued a statement saying that her organization and the Coast Guard had located the whale and documented its condition.

“The animal is emaciated, very light colored, rough-skinned, and is covered in cyamid amphipods (whale lice),” stated Chow’s news release. “At least four sharks were trailing the animal. These are all indicators of a whale in distress. However, the whale is not entangled and does not show any signs of trauma from being struck by a vessel; these are two of the main threats to humpback whales in Hawaii. The cause of the animal’s poor condition remains a mystery at this time.”

Chow also reiterated just how unusual it is to see a whale in Maui waters at this time of the year. “This is a very unusual sighting as first sightings of humpback whales are typically in September or October,” Chow said.

“Humpback whales are generally in Hawaii from November through May where they breed, give birth, and nurse their calves. It is difficult to determine whether this is one of the first sightings of a humpback whale for this upcoming season or if this whale has stayed around from last season.”

Humpback whales remain on the federal endangered species list. If you sight any marine mammal in distress, stay at least 100 yards away from it and call the NOAA 24-hour hotline at 1-888 2569840 (or radio the the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF CH. 16).

Indeed, there have been recent incidents in which body camera-wearing cops used deadly force, then reported that their camera mysteriously “turned off” just before the shooting.

“A Chicago officer whose police powers were suspended after the officer shot an African-American teenager in the back last week was wearing a body camera, but the device was not operating and did not record the fatal encounter, officials said on Monday,” The New York Times reported on Aug. 1. “Advocates for the family of Paul O’Neal, the 18-year-old who was killed on Thursday, reacted skeptically to claims of the faulty body camera, wondering aloud why the department had invested in the technology if it did not work.”

After 34 years of nearly continuous volcanic eruption from Kilauea on the Big Island, an inter-agency group has created new informational products about the health hazards of volcanic air pollution–vog.

Sulfur dioxide in vog creates hazards that challenge communities, agriculture and infrastructure on the Island of Hawaii and across the state. Vog, which can sometimes be seen as a visible haze or have a sulfurous smell or taste, is said to contribute to a variety of symptoms including eye irritation, coughing, wheezing, sore throats and headaches.

The new vog-hazard information–including a brochure, a FAQ booklet, a poster and a web-based dashboard–were created by a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey, Durham University, International Volcanic Health Hazard Network, Hawaii Department of Health and County of Hawaii Civil Defense.

“The diverse partnership has allowed us to develop new, consistent products that more fully address the needs of the community,” said DOH’s John Peard.

The products were designed to disseminate information while helping residents protect themselves during vog episodes. The booklet,

brochure, poster and dashboard offer advice on vog protection measures, such as staying indoors, limiting physical activity, and staying hydrated when vog levels are high.

The mobile-friendly vog dashboard provides comprehensive links to a wide range of vog resources, including vog forecasts and airquality information. The dashboard is hosted by the International Volcanic Health Hazard Network, a clearinghouse for information on the health impacts of volcanic eruptions.

The new products were inspired in part by a 2015 Durham University study by Claire Horwell. The study results supported the need for consistent online advice from all federal, state and local agencies; increased access to web- and non-web-based information on vog exposure and protection; and updated guidance on how to access resources about vog.

Horwell said providing relevant, up-todate information to a population living with decades of an ongoing volcanic eruption may help people to better cope with the frequent vog conditions.

The Eddie Aikau Foundation's offering more than $5,000 in cash prizes to winners of the 2016 Eddie Aikau Essay Contest. The “Eddie Went” contest is open to 7th through 10th grade students currently enrolled in public or private schools in Hawaii. The Foundation will present $500 to the first place winners, $350 to second place winners and $250 to third place winners. The contest also will give out two $100 honorable mention awards.

The Foundation is looking for essays that examine the continuing impression made by the legendary big wave surfer and heroic lifeguard. The essays should reflect the impact Aikau has made in the lives of the writer and the public.

Students entering the essay contest are instructed to use the contest title, “Eddie Went,” as a writing prompt. The Foundation then encourages the students to explore what it is about Aikau’s strength, spirit, knowledge and power (mana) that continues to attract

worldwide attention; students should answer the question: how has the mana of Eddie Aikau made a difference?

There will be English and Hawaiian Language Divisions. Awards in the English division will be given to winners in each grade level; because there are fewer Hawaiian Language applicants, all grade levels will be combined with only one set of awards in that division.

The essay contest will be judged on three main criteria: essay content, presentation and writing skill. The submitted work must show that the writer has insight and understanding behind their words.

The work must also reflect the voice of the writer, and reflect Aikau’s values.

All essays must be the student’s original work. Additional guidelines require the essay be a maximum of 1,000 words and must be typewritten, double-spaced, and in 12 point font. Each essay should have a title that captures the idea of the work;

The merchants showcasing their goods and products are located throughout the center. During the Outdoor Market, Outlets of Maui retailers hosted a sidewalk sale with special Wednesday-evening-only promotions.

The late fashion designer Alexander McQueen (who dabbled in macabre collections, himself), might appreciate the work of acolyte Tina Gorjanc: She will grow McQueen’s skin (from DNA off his hair) in a lab, add back his tattoos, and from that make leather handbags and jackets. Gorjanc, a recent graduate of McQueen’s fashion school alma mater, bills the project mainly as showcasing the meager legal protections for abandoned bits of human DNA–and fears industrial use of such DNA on a much larger scale.

Geoffrey Fortier, 23, was arrested in Craighead County, Arkansas, in July and charged with video voyeurism of a woman he had allowed to shower in the home occupied by Fortier and his girlfriend. After the woman stepped out of the shower, she noticed a logged-on iPad propped against a wall. Fortier informed deputies that it was all a misunderstanding–that he had earlier recorded himself urinating in order to sell the video to a urinationfetish website, and he simply forgot to remove the device.

WAR IS ALL HELL Jihadists had a rough year militarily and now suffer further from an array of field reports (such as a new book by retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn) that their most sensitive laptop computers captured in battle by U.S. forces seemed always to be loaded with pornography–including “vile” material involving kids and animals. (Initially, said one analyst, there was so much porn that U.S. intelligence figured its purpose was only to disguise tactical messages within the sex-scene pixels.) On the other hand, jihadists can claim one victory, in that the actor Michael Caine said recently the terroristcaused airport discomforts had finally convinced him to legally change his name to “Michael Caine”–after tiring of explaining to screeners why he had Maurice Micklewhite’s [his birth name’s] passport.

AWKWARD FLIRTATIONS Patrick Marsh, 59, was charged with indecent exposure in Woodward Township, Pennsylvania, in July after he rang the doorbell of a 30-year-old female neighbor seeking, as he told police, “courtship.” He greeted the woman naked, “with his genitals in his hands.” And in Florida’s The Villages senior community, Howard Sparber, 69, faces several charges after having, in June, fired 33 9mm rounds into the home of a woman who had been declining his sexual overtures.

(The lady was away.) Oh, and John Taylor, 57, said he was just lonely and wanted to meet women when a court sentenced him in Shirley, England, in July, for a three-month spree of furtively slipping men’s underwear through various women’s house letterboxes.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In June, Dieter Uchtdorf, a high official in the Mormon Church, said the historic narrative of Mormon founder Joseph Smith’s use of a “seer stone” to translate the “golden plates” that gave Smith ultimate worldly knowledge has been authenticated, basically, by the 2007 invention of the iPhone. “I can get the collected knowledge of the world through a few little inputs,” said Uchtdorf, and thus it is likelier than ever that God gave Smith something like a smartphone in 1823.

FRIENDLY BACTERIA Plastics are well-known to decompose slowly, but the most difficult is the polyethylene used for containers such as the omnipresent water bottles, and despite recycling, tens of millions of metric tons wind up in landfills, where the plastic’s strong polymer bonds resist breakdown.

Recently, however, two Japanese researchers, after tedious trial-and-error, identified a bacterium that views the polyethylene terephthalate as an efficient, tasty meal. A colleague of the two said further tweaking was necessary before using the bacteria industrially.

ROOM-SIZED BONG? Samuel Oliphant, 35, was arrested on various charges in Scottsdale, Arizona, in June after police were called to a house to investigate a “strong and unusual” odor (which cops suspected to be drugs).

Inside, they found a “laboratory,” necessitating use of their “hazmat protocols,” because Oliphant had allegedly built a “complex and elaborate” system apparently for the purpose of enhancing the smoking of marijuana.

AWESOME! Rapper Kasper Knight apparently shot himself in the cheek with a revolver on July 17 in Indianapolis–as part of a staged music video–according to raw footage of the incident posted on his Facebook page (and then of course seen by almost two million people). Knight, seen bleeding afterward, said he tried to recruit a shooter, but when no one volunteered, shot himself, anticipating (as in previous times he had been shot, by other people) “like a 4 out of 10 on the pain scale.”

Bummer Summer 2016 Recapping the last three months of cinematic junk

S

ummer movies are supposed to play like fun carnival rides, taste like cotton candy and feel like exhilarating dreams to escape in. This year, the majority of May-August films were more like broken-down rides, stale candy and cinematic nightmares. The Bummer Summer of 2016 was a collection of letdowns.

Here’s a recap:

The Good The genuinely scary The Conjuring 2 was a rarity–it made a lot of money, was popular with audiences and was actually good. In a summer where too many dogs squeaked by or died out of the starting gate, James Wan’s stylish sequel matched the promise of the original. Only slightly less terrifying is the clever, Wan-produced Lights Out, which should lead to a surge in nightlight sales. The old hat but highly enjoyable Star Trek Beyond should satiate Trekkies until they find a genuinely new direction to take. X-Men Apocalypse fell apart in the third act, when a somersaulting, Frederick’s of Hollywood-attired Olivia Munn spun it into pure camp.

Until that point, Bryan Singer’s grand, exciting sequel had more than enough to recommend it. The violent, too-hip-forthe-room Ryan Gosling/Russell Crowe comedy The Nice Guys has a cult following awaiting its blu-ray/DVD release. The same fate awaits the less-than-perfect but still hilarious Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a very of-the-moment satire.

The charming Pete’s Dragon was that rare remake that wasn’t a Xerox of the original and was much better.

Guilty Pleasures Will Smith’s skipping out on round two of ID4 wasn’t the problem; the dumb-and-proud-of-it screenplay and Edward Scissorhands editing job on the pace were. Still, it was a lot of fun and the extra-terrestrial school bus chase at the end was one of the best action sequences of the summer. Independence Day: Resurgence won’t become the 4th of July staple the original was but it deserves better than the $5 bin at Target. Sausage Party had its moments, but admitting I laughed at a talking douche isn’t the same thing as actually suggesting you watch the movie.

The Misses No one wanted sequels to Alice in Wonderland, Now You See Me, Neighbors, The Mechanic or the 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , let alone another Purge or a fourth Ice Age. Hollywood executives, take note: making a hit movie is a gamble.

When you hit big, walk away a winner and don’t look back. Going back to the table and risking it all on the same game is a stupid bet. The same game was played by Jason Bourn e, a crushing summer letdown that worked hard to spin gold from a story that had already concluded perfectly.

Too Much Love Captain America: Civil War began the summer season. It’s an uneven, patchy, two-and-a-half hour movie of moments that drags whenever Iron Man and SpiderMan aren’t on screen. The summer’s top

grossing monster hit, Finding Dory, had a similar problem. Sure it was beautiful and occasionally funny, but even devoted Pixar parents know it wasn’t as good as the original.

Adults Got Left Behind To be fair, I’m not convinced there was ever a wide audience awaiting instant flops Free State of Jones, The Infiltrator, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hands of Stone or Money Monster. Still, movies for grown-ups were scarce. Meanwhile, Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and the love-it-or-hate sensation The Neon Demon never came to Maui. The acclaimed Captain Fantastic opened this year’s Maui Film Festival but never got a local theatrical release. Why? Was Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates hogging too many screens?!

The Bad Some embraced The Legend of Tarzan but I couldn’t get into the anachronistic dialogue, lifeless performances and gratuitous Samuel L. Jackson. Art movies continue the baffling trend of being made for millions, boasting big name movie stars and finding a wide release, despite being “independent.” A film that should have died on the festival circuit but somehow played for three weeks on Maui was The Lobster, proof that Colin Farrell has made a more insufferable film than Alexander. Then there was Suicide Squad, a jumbled catastrophe that oozed with contempt for its core audience. It made a lot of money, just like The Flintstones, Batman & Robin, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and every other summer hit that initially looked good but wound up an embarrassment. If the best that can be said about a new movie is that its “just okay” or “not bad,” take that as a warning. ■

It’s supposed to be good luck to fold 1000 origami cranes in a year. I’m giving it a try. Someone gave me a stack of fancy paper and whenever I have a minute I fold it into a crane. It’s very meditative, actually, and it occurred to me that this kind of activity might suit you, because of its low time commitment (it only takes a minute). Like I said last week, you need to generate bits of downtime; because finding or making a spare half hour on a regular basis is beyond you, I thought I’d suggest something like this, that you can squeeze into all the chinks in your schedule.
