“Our robot has that same capability,” MPD spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto emailed me on July 8.

In light of what went down in Dallas, the Maui County Council needs to hold a public hearing on what, exactly, the Maui PD can and should do with their robot (and any other robots they get in the future). The county’s taxpayers paid for the robot, and we all need to know a great deal more about both what it can do, and what the MPD should do with it.

LIKE DALLAS, MAUI POLICE ROBOT CAN ALSO KILL WITH EXPLOSIVES The July 7 shootings in Dallas at the conclusion of an otherwise peaceful rally against police violence was horrible and abhorrent and straight-up mass murder.

Five police officers died, and five others (as well as two civilians) were wounded. It was barbaric and horrible.

The sniper (and there only seems to have been one) put Dallas law enforcement in an ugly spot. But their method of resolving the situation raises new, uncomfortable questions that affect us even out here on Maui.

In short, after apparently prolonged and ultimately fruitless negotiations with the alleged sniper during a stand-off, the Dallas Police Department deployed one of their “bomb robots.” Though normally designed to get close to explosives and then either defuse or detonate them, the Dallas PD instead equipped their robot with an explosive of its own. After directing the robot relatively close to the suspected sniper, they remotely detonated the bomb, killing the suspected sniper.

For lack of a better term, it was a drone killing. Law enforcement has long had the authorization to use deadly force, but if this seems, well, unprecedented, that’s because it is. Here’s the July 8 Washington Post on the ramifications: “The move represents a potentially unprecedented use of robots to deliberately deliver lethal force in domestic policing, according to experts, raising questions about how local law enforcement officials are deploying the high-tech tools that increasingly fill their arsenals,” stated the paper. “‘We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the subject was,’ Dallas Police Chief David Brown said at a news conference Friday morning.

‘Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger.’”

Police departments all over the country– including right here on Maui–have these robots. In 2014, the Maui Police Department took possession of a $17,000 robot from Palo Alto-based RoboteX called the Avatar II. Here are the specs on it, which I reported back in 2014: “Built by Sunnyvale, California-based RoboteX, it’s called the Avatar II,” I wrote.

“It looks like a small black tank–maybe two feet long, 15 inches across and six inches deep, according a company brochure posted on its website. It weighs 25 pounds without its battery. It can operate 300 yards or so from its base, go four to five hours before draining the battery and climb a 60 degree incline.”

Maui PD officials have refused to discuss how they would use the Avatar–and not just to me, either. In a 2013 budget hearing, then-Deputy Chief Clayton Tom refused to answer County Councilmember Don Guzman’s harmless question about the robot’s dimensions.

That being said, Tom and then-Chief Gary Yabuta did admit to the County Council during that 2013 hearing that their Avatar robot could be equipped with a gun (though Yabuta insisted to the Coun-

I’m serious. There are many examples of people who’ve passed through that old revolving door, transforming their otherwise dull careers in municipal bureaucracy into far more lucrative jobs in the private sector, but Ginoza has outdone himself lately.

For nearly two decades, Ginoza worked for local government in a variety of jobs.

His last, and arguably most important, was as Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa’s director of the Environmental Management Department, which oversees all the county’s dealings with garbage, waste, etc.

Let’s start with the July 12, 2016 Maui News article on Anaergia Services, which has a 20-year contract from the County of Maui to build a waste conversion facility at the Central Maui landfill. The facility is Arakawa’s big solution to all things garbage on Maui (and represents a big part of why his administration is so lukewarm on recycling efforts).

Anyway, Maui Electric Co. doesn’t like the project, and said they won’t buy the energy “product” the facility will produce. Anaergia has, in turn, filed a complaint with the state Public Utilities

Commission (PUC) to force MECO to buy its biogas “product.”

Which brings us to the July 12 Maui News article, which states that Anaergia is planning to do an end-run around MECO by setting up deals with local energy companies–like Hawaii Gas: As Anaergia awaits a decision, [Anaergia Americas President Arun] Sharma said his company also is exploring selling its biogas to “local entities” and has been talking to companies, including Hawaii Gas. It makes “logical” sense, he said.

Several attempts to obtain comment from Hawaii Gas representatives have been unsuccessful.

One of those “Hawaii Gas representatives” is Kyle Ginoza. On Nov. 30, 2015, he went to work as the company’s General Manager for Maui operations.

“Kyle is a proven leader who understands the important role that energy plays in the lives of residents and businesses on the Valley Isle,” said Mustafa Demirbag, executive director of Hawaii Gas operations, in a Dec. 8, 2015 company press release. “As a Maui native and former county director twice over, he knows what it means to serve our communities and help them thrive. We’re excited to have him lead our Maui team.”

So let’s rewind a bit. It’s 2014, and the County of Maui (with Ginoza at the helm of Environmental Management) signs a big contract with Anaergia to build this waste facility. In a January 2014 Maui Now story, you can see a photo of Ginoza grinning while Arakawa signs the Anaergia deal.

Then a year later, Ginoza resigns from the county to go work for Hawaii Gas. And now, Anaergia, looking for work because it’s big Maui County contract is on hold, returns to Ginoza (who is now at Hawaii Gas) and starts talking a new deal.

This is how it’s done, kids. You go work for the county (or state or federal government, it makes no difference), do the people’s business for a couple decades, then cash in at the private sector on the relationships you cultivated while working in the government.

Oh, and on top of all that, last month the Maui County Council voted to indemnify Ginoza in former Solid Waste Division Director (and former Ginoza subordinate) Tracy Takamine’s 2013 wrongful termination lawsuit against the county. At the same meeting, which took place on June 17, the council also voted to approve a settlement in that case for an undisclosed amount.

Keep in mind that Ginoza isn’t even a county employee anymore–he started working for Hawaii Gas way back on Nov. 30, 2015. But the Maui County Council knows a superstar when they see one. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

NextEra/Hawaiian Electric deal busted!

WITH TIME WARNER CABLE/CHARTER MERGER, WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO OLD EMAIL ADDRESSES? There are many questions concerning the merger and acquisition of Time Warner Cable by Charter Communications, which occurred on May 18 of this year. Too many to list here, but here’s one: what will happen to current subscribers’ @hawaii.rr.com email accounts?

We started by calling Charter’s customer service line. Except they have no idea what will happen to the email accounts, though they did say that customers won’t see any changes for another year. They also said that customers would receive updates in their bills as well as automated phone calls about changes before they occur.

But this still doesn’t answer the mystery of

In a 2-0 vote (one commissioner abstained) on Friday, July 15, the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted to reject the proposed NextEra/Hawaiian Electric merger.

“The PUC concluded that while the companies demonstrated that NextEra is fit, willing and able to perform the services currently offered by HECO, they did not demonstrate that the application is reasonable and in the public interest,” KITV reported on July 15.

Merger opponents, and there were many, immediately cheered the news.

“NextEra made this a no brainer,” said Isaac Moriwake, Staff Attorney with the environmental legal firm Earthjustice in a July 15 news release. “Outright rejection of the takeover was the only realistic option. NextEra refused to provide its plans for Hawaii, other than to give us a ‘bigger HECO.’ Based on its opposition to clean energy in Florida and failure to chart a different path in this state, NextEra is not what Hawaii wants or needs.”

Marti Townsend, the Sierra Club Hawaii director, agreed. “Hawaii is committed to a 100% clean energy future,” she said in the same news release. “We need partners that will help advance our critical economic

and environmental goals, and not businesses focused solely on their short-term gain.”

Though NextEra could have appealed the decision, the company instead chose to pay Hawaiian Electric $95 million in contract termination fees and simply walk away entirely, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on Monday, July 18.

what will happen to the email servers. So we emailed Bret Picciolo, Time Warner Cable’s public relations manager, to ask if current TWC customers will have to switch their emails to a Charter or Spectrum (the new company name) email domain. He didn’t responded by press time.

So next we emailed Charter Communication’s PR department, asking the same questions: will current Time Warner customers still be able to use their current email address or will they have to change their email address to a Spectrum or Charter account? If so, will those customers still have access to their emails from the TWC account and will an email forwarding option be available to the new email? What will happen to the email server and domains for those accounts?

Again, no response so far. But while waiting for a response, we called Oceanic Time Warner’s local customer service line.

Their representative had a little more information about the email question.

Turns out that when Time Warner acquired Road Runner, it allowed customers to keep their @ hawaii.rr.com email domain while all new customers received the email domain @twc.com. When logging into the email server provided by TWC, it’s clear that the username requires your entire email address to account for both email domains.

So in conclusion, it looks like @hawaii. rr.com customers (and @twc.com customers, for that matter) will get to keep their old email addresses.

In May, an apparently devout woman named Katy Vasquez of Winter Park, Florida, posted a sincerely written entry on Facebook (and told Huffington Post in an interview) that she had just seen a “sign from God”– a cross–as a smudge in her infant’s soiled diaper. “I prayed to God for a sign that everything would be OK,” she gushed to the reporter. “It might not be the prettiest sign, but he put it where he knew I’d see it.”

To their great surprise, Sophie Scafidi and friends, on an outing in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, in June, learned that a man spying on and photographing them through a camera lens hidden in a Gatorade bottle painted black was not violating any law.

Although the lens was rigged to the man’s phone, which contained beach photos, including some of children, police informed Scafidi that even surreptitious photography in sleazy circumstances, as long as done on public property, was legal -- and that the only law broken in the incident was by the person who snatched the “camera” to show police.

WAIT WUT A court in Canberra, Australia, found Wesley King not guilty of a 2014 burglary despite his DNA’s having been found at the crime scene–on underpants containing his fresh feces. Wrote Chief Justice Helen Murrell in June: There is a “reasonable possibility” that the burglar was someone else who was wearing unwashed underwear that had previously been worn by the accused. (Thus, she found King not guilty of all charges.)

In June, a federal appeals court revived Adrian King’s lawsuit against the Huttonsville Correctional Center in West Virginia for emotional distress and invasion of privacy in forcing him into surgery to remove the marbles he had implanted in his penis before going behind bars in 2008. King did not allege that he misses the marbles but only that he had chosen body-modification and that the surgery was against his will, causing pain upon touch (or whenever it gets cold, or rains or snows). Prison officials initially ordered the surgery because it was unclear that the objects were not contraband.

WEIRD SCIENCE Medical Daily, in a May review of recent cases, noted progress in dealing with Cotard’s syndrome–a disorder that leads patients to believe they have no blood or vital body parts– or feeling as if they are dead (or may as well be). Studies show one in about 200 psychiatric patients exhibit the symptoms, and one doctor, describing a brain scan of his patient,

said brain activity resembled that of a person in a coma or under anesthesia. Cotard’s, also known as walking corpse syndrome, leads patients to thus avoid eating or bathing (asking themselves, why bother?).

AWWWWW The Sacramento (California) Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals put out a call for help in April after stray kittens were found dumped in a yard, with only two still alive but nearly blind with eye infections and needing animal blood for a serum that might save the eyes. The call was “answered” by the rescue dog Jemmie. After Jemmie’s blood “donation” (not a transfusion, since the blood went only to make the serum), vets reported saving one eye of one of the kittens, earning Jemmie a “special” reward. (Said vet Sarah Varanini, “There’s nothing in life (Jemmie) likes more than kittens.”)

REDNECK CHRONICLES At the monthly pro-wrestling show in Ringgold, Georgia, in June, Patricia Crowe, 59, apparently having had enough of “bad guy” Paul Lee, reportedly jumped into the ring to rescue “good guy” Iron Mann, whom Lee had “tied up” and been beating with a chair. First, she cut Mann loose with her knife and then pulled a loaded handgun on Lee (and was eventually arrested by sheriff’s deputies). Crowe admitted that Lee’s earlier “mean” banter with ringside patrons had unnerved her, especially when he told Crowe to sit her “toothless self back down.”

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS A former Malaysian legislator (Mr. S. Manikavasagam), who was charged in June with taking a bribe worth about US$7,300 from a contractor, claimed innocence–that somehow a package of money was thrown into his car as he drove down a city street. And a woman in Goldsboro, North Carolina, acquired a freezer from her neighbor several months ago but said she hadn’t looked inside until May, when she discovered parts of a dead body (and called authorities). She said the neighbor had discouraged her from opening the freezer because “a church” was using it as a “time capsule.”

DRUGS–WHAT CAN’T THEY DO? University of Georgia student Benjamin Abele, 22, was finally subdued by four police officers on May 29 after he had run naked down an Athens street and leaped into the gooey, malodorous back end of a garbage truck, wallowing in the slimy liquid that pools under the gunk (hindering arrest), and then attempting to burrow further into the filthiness to somehow “escape.” Two Taser shots had no effect, and he was identified as high on PCP. ■

h, that’s a baseball park, not a dog toilet. Our keiki play there. I jog in the morning and I’ll see half a dozen people releasing the hounds. That’s fine, but leaving their turds just isn’t pono. Those steaming piles of doodoo don’t just magically poof into shitake fertilizer dust and disappear overnight. Either someone else has to scoop them up or it smears all over our keiki’s shoes, or the lawn mower hits them and sprays them into a minefield of poop shrapnel. When it rains, it melts into icky goo. A few days ago, I saw a big guy with a beefy dog drop a bomb over by first-base fence. When he got back to his truck, he wiped the dog’s okole. But that thoughtful gift was still there the next morning, not far from another one. Auwe. I asked a one guy running his dogs for a plastic bag, and he said no, he only had two for himself. What, only take care of yourself? You’re not akamai to scoop up two in one? I threw up my hands, ran back home and got a bag. ■

K

alani Pe‘a is not just debuting his album, but himself. The cover photo of his album E Walea is a good indicator that Pe‘a is not a mere a newcomer to the Hawaiian genre; he’s a game-changer. Trading the beach for downtown Wailuku, an aloha T-shirt for a suit, a ukulele for an infectious smile and a shaka for a kalo necktie, you can see Pe‘a is different. But the 33-year-old singer is not trying to defy the status quo of Hawaiian musicians. He’s just being himself.

“I’m a modern Hawaiian,” he says. “That is, a Hawaiian that speaks Hawaiian fluently, and who will rock a purple bowtie and Versace prescribed glasses and will sing ‘Always and Forever’ in Hawaiian and English. That’s who I am.”

Pe‘a rocks the modern Hawaiian juxtaposition, and not just because he showed up to the interview wearing kalo earrings with his Versace glasses. In his album, the musician uses R&B and soul as mediators between millennialism and Hawaiian cul-

ture. It is Boyz II Men meets Bruddah Iz. Allan Cool, Pe‘a’s manager and partner, labeled this hybrid sound as “Kalani style.”

It’s not just the influence of R&B that makes Pe‘a’s songs stand apart from the kind that would greet you at the Kahului airport. It’s how he voices his words.

The Kalani style is not a subtle sound you pick out while listening to his seven haku mele (Hawaiian original music compositions) and five covers. Instead of

noticing it as an afterthought, Pe‘a’s musical style surprises you mid-song. You can literally hear the soul throughout Pe‘a’s album, in both meanings of the word. In track four, “Hanalei I Ka Pilimoe,” Pe‘a disrupts the relaxed acoustic with a sudden–and powerful–ballad. Then there is the gentle track “Ku‘u Poli‘ahu,” but Pe‘a’s voice does not blend in with the soothing melody. Pe‘a’s lyrics are a force of their own, refusing to camouflage into the background music.

producer in Honolulu who has received 13 Na Hoku Hanohano awards. Then there is Nani Lim Yap, a Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement awardee and singer Pe‘a referred to as the Diana Ross of Hawaii, who performed a duet with Pe‘a in track three, “He Wehi Aloha.”

“That memory, and having her in the studio and being recorded on my album permanently, will be one of the best memories in my life and embedded in me forever,” Pe‘a said.

Being in the presence of two Na Hoku Hanohano awardees is not what overwhelmed Pe‘a’s sentimentality. It was acknowledging that there was a family connection in the room, even if it was not blood-related, that got to Pe‘a. Family is one of Pe‘a’s top values, going so far as to title his album after the shortened version of his nephew’s name, Kamali‘ikanekuike kaipu‘oluwaleaokalani Pe‘a-Whitney. Pe‘a honored his grandmother Mary Ka‘iawe Manuia as well, closing the album with “Nani A Maika‘i,” a church hymn she would sing. But it was a family member who made it possible for Pe‘a’s lyrics to even be coherent.

munity. More specifically, he wanted to give back to his community by educating Hawaii’s children and “to ensure that our future leaders know their Hawaiian identity.” Pe‘a is instilling that sense of identity everyday as a Hawaiian resource coordinator at Kamehameha Schools’ Maui campus.

Being an educator has also pumped up Pe‘a’s reputation as a singer. It’s not only the keiki who look up to their teacher, but the adults, too. On top of being a fluent Hawaiian speaker of 25 years and a graduate from a Hawaiian immersion program, Pe‘a said being a kumu, an instructor, has given him the integrity and credibility that has earned people’s trust.

This faith in Pe‘a’s music is essential given his alternative take on Hawaiian lyrics.

When it comes to Hawaiian music, a genre that has so carefully guarded its traditions, it can be understandable for listeners to be hesitant towards Pe‘a’s direction. But Pe‘a is just trying to make his album more accessible to everyone’s tastes.

“It is a hard business because certain people like Hawaiian music a certain way, whether it’s falsetto or whether it’s traditional Hawaiian music, but for me, I hopefully can change that and make my album a little more global,” Pe‘a said.

Pe‘a hopes his album’s global reach will make listeners want to hunker down in a bar in Texas to listen to his cover of “You Are So Beautiful” or perform the hula at Merrie Monarch to his first three tracks.

But that is the only impact Pe‘a hopes his album will have, other than hoping listeners simply enjoy themselves.

“I’m not trying to deliver or convey or influence others, I’m just trying to tell others that’s who I am,” Pe‘a said.

Pe‘a shared that his ultimate wish is for people to pick up his purple album, play it, read the lyrics, read a book, light a candle, have a ribeye steak and enjoy your loved one in the midst of everything.

“My musician realized that normal traditional Hawaiian language singers have normal chords like C, F Major,” he says.

“My chords are augmented and diminished and little minor chords so there’s a little jazz and R&B.” Sitting at Maui Coffee Roasters in Kahului, Pe‘a took a break from his snack to demonstrate his distinctive vocal range.

Pe‘a half-joked that he could mimic Beyoncé, erasing doubt that he was joking when he launched into her famous line “Baby it’s you, you’re the one I want.” The small talk and orders being yelled in the coffee shop did not muddle the clarity of the Beyoncé lyric. His voice’s ability to resonate, whether it is above the chatter of a crowd or Hawaiian instruments on a recorded track, can also be credited to his roughly four years of training as an opera singer.

While modern music genres and icons like Beyoncé and Luther Vandross inspire Pe‘a, he takes the Hawaiian aspect of his album seriously–if not more. Pe‘a is a fluent Hawaiian speaker who graduated from Ke Kula ‘o Nawahiokalani ‘opu‘u, the Hawaiian Language School in Kea‘au, Puna, in 2001.

But Pe‘a is not just an academic Hawaiian.

He speaks the language at the dinner table with his family. Pe‘a is also a strong advocate for Hawaiian music to receive its own category at the Grammy Awards.

“Our Hawaiian language must thrive,” he says. “Our people must thrive. And in order for me to do that, I must share that through the composition, through the melodies, and every song.”

For Pe‘a, his album is not merely a collection of songs that happen to be sung in Hawaiian. Rather than looking at the Hawaiian lyrics as a second language, Pe‘a treats them as poetry. That is where the meaning of Pe‘a’s album reveals itself–the poetics. Although the literal meaning of E Walea is “to come together like birds, be elated, exuberant and enjoy,” there are more hidden messages, kaona, to be discovered in Pe‘a’s songs. These cryptic meanings peak through in the images Pe‘a paints as he croons each word. Pe‘a used the image of a lofty flower as an example at Maui Coffee Roasters, explaining how we can compare the Naupaka flower of Hilo to a particular person.

Pe‘a at the age of four. Preschool speech therapy’s attempts at smoothing out Pe‘a’s stammering sentences were fruitless. It was Pe‘a’s mother, Puanani Leonard, who got him talking–or rather, singing–straight.

Leonard introduced her then four-year-old son to singing, the child’s first song being “I Feel My Savior’s Love.”

Stuttering and stammering interrupted Pe‘a’s speech less as he went on to compete in a multitude of vocal competitions, winning Brown Bags to Stardom at eight years old and later snagging first place in the men’s category in classical and musical divisions at the National Association Teacher’s of Singing Competition in the Colorado/ Wyoming chapter during his time at Colorado Mesa University.

“From speech therapy to being a college graduate in communications, Kalani can’t stop talking and singing,” Arthur Kalani Pe‘a, Pe‘a’s father, said.

Thanks to singing, the child who needed speech therapy in preschool went on to tackle a field in which verbal interaction is mandatory: journalism. Pe‘a worked as an assignment editor at KJCT News 8, an ABC affiliate in Grand Junction, for two years before returning to the islands.

Every month since then, the Treehouse Gallery has put on a themed show on the last Saturday of the month. This month’s theme is the Birthday Luau.

“This year our Birthday show is kind of a retrospect,” says Binda. “This is what I’m going to hang. This is all work that I have done since I got here. In that same vein, we’re doing this show for the gallery. The Treehouse started as an idea on a Home Depot run with my friend Jesse. I was getting material for a project that I was doing at a yoga studio.

It was a huge piece of plywood the size of this wall and I was living in a tiny bedroom in Paia. I was thinking that I can’t really be doing these projects in my house, it would be nice to have a space. I think any artist can dream of having a studio.”

For Binda and Lenihan, it was an idea worth exploring.

“You think of Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack with these huge rooms to go crazy on,” says Binda. “That was our inspiration, and our dream. Jesse and I thought it up, and he handled a lot of the logistics and I handled a lot of the cheerleading.

ers with my prints on it. That is just cool. I like the idea of getting art into the world– it doesn’t have to be this mysterious thing on the wall that someone did sometime. It can be accessible.”

The Treehouse Gallery Birthday Luau show takes place on July 30 and starts at 4pm. The show will include DJ Chad Kistler on vinyl and a tea ceremony. The community is invited. Rumor has it that Lenihan will be back again too.

“A big part of what I’m so proud of looking back a year later is the whole transformation this place has taken on with the help of so many people,” says Binda.

“This place has so much potential to grow.

t’s one of those gorgeous mornings in Haiku, where the clear blue sky seems to go on forever until, inevitably, it finally collides with the deep green jungle. The sun is hot, and it’s streaming into the window at the Treehouse Gallery. A bright pine scent is also wafting into the studio, dispensed from a nearby table saw. As the saw lets out a shrill shriek, the artist Em sings along.

I’m sitting with Taylor Binda, one of the co-creators of this North Shore artist cooperative, which occupies several rooms in the Pauwela Cannery. They will celebrate a year of monthly shows on July 30, and Binda says she’s learned a lot since opening the space.

“We have had ebbs and flows,” says Binda. “Maui is known for that. All the people here now are not the same as in the beginning. We started about a year and half ago. The one year birthday this month signifies one year since our first show. We were throwing a welcome back party for the other Treehouse founder, Jesse Lenihan, who travels a lot. We decided, ‘Well, we might as well throw art on the walls,’ and that’s how our monthly shows got started.”

They’ve filled the different rooms in the space with different artists, all of which contribute to the rent and the shows. There are individual studio spaces, and big front rooms for the gallery shows. Binda says those rooms have evolved and sometimes also get used for movie nights, or watching TED Talks through a projector.

“I’m moving through a shift to be able to devote more time to my artwork,” says Binda. “I let go of a job. I’m 28, so I’m in this Saturn return thing, and I see that influencing my artwork. This piece here with the unicorn is the oldest one in my collection; it was made before I got here. As you can see, it’s really full. There are a lot of layers. There’s a lot of stuff. Then when you look at some of these other pieces, they’ve lightened up. They’re in lighter colors. The Pele Moonlight piece right there is one of my favorite pieces, inspired by a trip to the Big Island. Refining and simplifying is

something that’s happening to my work. My palette is changing. I lost someone close to me in the midst of it, and the butterfly wing piece is a spirit transformation symbol for me. It’s a funny thing about showing your art, too: it’s so exposed. You’re saying to the public, ‘Here I am on a wall. Look at me. I feel naked.’ But it’s fun, too. It makes you grow, and it feels good to talk about it. ” Painting is Binda’s main medium but she plans on expanding into textiles.

“I draw and use oil pastels sometimes, but most of what I’m doing is using upcycled canvasses and paint,” she says. “I get a lot of my canvases from friends leaving the island or from the thrift store. I get paint from the paint recycling program here. I studied fashion–I also make clothes–so I would love to do more textiles. I think my art would be great translated into fabric.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

Not the new Ghostbusters, sadly ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 116 Min.

aul Feig’s much discussed remake of Ghostbusters comes with more baggage than any summer movie this year. The online and real-world animosity towards the project sprung mostly from a rotten early trailer. There was also the bigger question: since the original came out in 1984, is one of the best comedies of its decade and established the bar so high for every subsequent f/x-driven comedy, why try to reinvent an already perfect wheel? Was the insistence from Sony Pictures to make this truly justified beyond franchise dollars? After all, do we really need another subpar remake?

The original and pivotal lead Bill Murray was famously unwilling to make an official Ghostbusters III. His equally essential costar, Harold Ramis, is no longer among us.

What Feig and his talented collaborators have come up with is no disaster, entertaining in parts but still an interesting failure.

Kristin Wiig stars as Erin Gilbert, a university scientist, longing for professional acknowledgement, whose book on the paranormal has “literally and figuratively”

come back to haunt her. Gilbert teams with a former colleague (Melissa McCarthy), a wacked out techno genius (Kate McKinnon) and a subway worker (Leslie Jones) to investigate a string of ghost sightings throughout the Big Apple.

The lingering controversy surrounding the decision to cast four women in the leads is sexist and stupid. Feig’s movies (as well as decades of cinema and television) have proven female leads, comedic training or not, are more than capable at carrying a film without the help of male co-stars. The problem here isn’t the sex change of the four central characters but an uneven ensemble and a screenplay that flat lines when it should be funny.

McCarthy is strangely subdued here (this is hardly the movie to keep it reigned in) and Wiig’s one-note, whispered line readings were fine for Bridesmaids but render her bland here. The lesser known SNL vets, Mckinnon and Jones, are far better and should have been in the foreground more. Placing former Ghostbusters stars (including a wasted Murray) in tiny, thankless roles was a big mistake.

disastrous Vacation remake, does him no favors. Once again, the joke is how attractive he is. Somebody stop him before he appears in another ‘80s era remake.

In addition to a forced concept (will two former best friends reconcile? Will bustin’ make me feel good?), the villain on hand is awful, both in concept and the way he’s played.

Master character actor Charles Dance is in the cast and, strangely, not playing the bad guy.

The gags are light, obvious and lazy but the special effects are impressive. Questioning plausibility in a movie like this is pointless but the logic of the big finale is lost on me. Why is Times Square full of signs and landmarks from every decade of the 20th century? Has the whole movie fallen into a scrambled dimension with no discernible past or present? Oh well, at

least this lively spectacle has lots of great ghost bustin’ action and some wild visuals.

I enjoyed the return of Slimer but the more-is-more problem with most summer movies is present here. There are no less than four versions of the classic title song and only Ray Parker Jr.’s original is any good. As for the moments that cheekily address the online hatred towards the movie, reference the original and push female empowerment, it’s all too soft.

Feig’s Bridesmaids and Spy didn’t have McKinnon lustily licking a proton gun but both were constantly hilarious and felt like radical examples of female-led comedies. His Ghostbusters has some creative juice but is a better toy commercial than a comedy. The preferred follow-up to the first ‘bust is still Ghostbusters II. ■
