THE WAILUKU COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES TALK ABOUT THE COUNTY MANAGER IDEA

Will someone please get this guy a mirror?

A

s you’d expect, a lot was said at last night’s Kula Community Association-sponsored candidates’ forum, which included about a dozen people running for various local and state offices on Maui. But of particular note was the panel of five candidates running for the Maui County Council’s Waikapu-Wailuku-Waiehu-Waihee seat, currently held by Mike Victorino, who’s termed out this year. And in that panel, the way candidates Alika Atay, Joseph Blackburn, Dain Kane, Keith Regan and Hana Steel dealt with the possibility that the county would someday soon adopt a “county manager” form of government was especially interesting. Or rather, how some of the candidates handled the issue. No offense to Atay or Blackburn, but when your fellow candidates are current and former county officials (and in one weird case, someone who’s somehow simultaneously a current AND former county official), you’re going to get sidelined (for the record, Atay and Blackburn both sort of support the idea, though with reservations). Put simply, a County Council special committee recently recommended that the county amend its charter to take control over the day-to-day operations of the various county departments away from the current elected mayor and give it to a professional manager–someone who answers to the County Council itself. While this

system is used by many counties on the Mainland, it’s certainly novel here. Anyway, let’s start with former County Councilmember Dain Kane. He chalked up the whole discussion of whether such a manager is necessary to a “communication breakdown” between the mayor’s office and the council. “It’s a human problem,” he said before adding that he personally had a preference for the existing mayoral structure. It’s a fair position, of course, but Kane neglected to mention that during his time in office–and especially when he chaired the County Council–Kane and then-Mayor Alan Arakawa had an adversarial relationship. It wasn’t as bad as that which plagues Arakawa and current Council Chairperson Mike White, but it… okay, it was bad. “Another key challenger, Wailuku Councilman Dain Kane, 43, has accused Arakawa of leaving lawmakers out of the loop on major initiatives, and failing to treat council members and others with ‘fairness’ and ‘dignity,’” the Honolulu Advertiser reported on July 27, 2006, during that year’s mayoral race. Was all that just a “communication breakdown,” too, Kane? But Kane’s response to the question was nothing compared to that of Regan, who’s been the county’s Managing Director since Arakawa returned to the mayoral office in 2011. Though Regan’s title sounds lofty, he can’t hire or fire depart-

ment heads, so his real power in county government is limited. Regan approached the question of a potential county manager–someone who would all but eliminate the very job Regan holds–exactly as I imagined he would. “I’ve often asked, ‘What is broken? What needs fixing?’” Regan said. “There really ought to be systemic issues with that structure. I don’t see that.” Though Regan added (without elaboration) that the county might conceivably need a professional county manager “maybe five to 10 years down the road,” he said the county is “not ready for that yet.” Sigh. If Regan wants to find a “systemic” reason for changing the county charter, he need only look in the mirror. Regan’s own words–surreptitiously recorded three years ago by former Maui County Film Commissioner Harry Donenfeld–make this abundantly clear. Let’s flash back to early March 2013. Then Regan, mayoral Chief of Staff Herman Andaya and county communications director Rod Antone sat Donenfeld down at a Kahului Starbucks to tell him to stop bad-mouthing film producer Ryan Kavanugh–a major Arakawa campaign supporter who was also trying to convince the state Legislature to pass lucrative tax credits for film productions in Hawaii. The language Regan used during that talk exemplifies why so many people in Maui County want to see the mayor’s office stripped of a great many of its powers. “Ultimately, I think what Rod is saying is that our primary goal above all else is to get the mayor re-elected,” Regan told Donenfeld (I’ve listened to the audio recording of the conversation). “Nothing else really matters because if the mayor is not re-elected none of us have jobs. Let’s be very frank. We’re all political. We’re very connected to the mayor. If he loses, we lose, our families lose, those who depend on us lose. I think you need to understand where we’re all coming from.” In Regan’s world, administration officials work for one purpose only: to make sure the mayor gets re-elected. Next to this, Regan says, “nothing else really matters.” A few minutes later in his conversation with Donenfeld, Regan returned to this point again. “I’ve had the mayor tell me, straight to my face, ‘It’s not about you. It’s about me,’” Regan said. “He’s told me that in private. I respect that because he’s right.” No, he’s not right. The county charter doesn’t say county departments exist solely to further a mayor’s political aspirations. It doesn’t say “nothing else really matters” besides a political campaign. There is no clearer “systemic” issue at the heart of the drive to remove politics from the day-to-day operations of county departments than this.

Which brings us to Hana Steel, who at the candidates’ forum couldn’t contain her glee at the notion of bringing in a professional county executive. “Don’t we have to start thinking differently to solve our problems?” she asked rhetorically, after noting that in her experience it currently takes a year to 18 months to get someone up to speed in a county position. But what Steel didn’t say is that the last two years of her “26 years” as county Recycling Coordinator have been spent at home–a fact that raises innumerable questions over how county departments are currently run. “I was placed on Administrative Leave with Pay by the Director of Environmental Management, Mr. Ginoza in July, 2014,” Steel said in a May 19 email to me (citing personnel issues, county officials have never commented to me on why they placed Steel on administrative leave). “No specific reason was given in his letter which only referenced ‘various... concerns.’ This occurred about 3 months after, upon the advice of a County Personnel Specialist, I filed an age discrimination complaint with the federal government Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, EEOC, against the County. I am happy to report that The County has recently taken steps to resolve this issue. As a civil servant of 26 years I have much more to contribute to the betterment of our community either as the elected Council Member for Na wai eha, or returning to active civil service as Recycling Coordinator.” Ok, let’s unpack this. Nearly two years ago, Steel’s bosses placed her on administrative leave. She says they gave her no specific reason–they just told her to stop coming into work. Since then, the county–and by extension, we, the taxpayers–continued to pay her, but without her having to work. This occurred just a few months after she filed an age discrimination complaint against the county with the EEOC–a complaint that is now apparently close to resolution. Perhaps anticipating that I would have follow-up questions, Steel added this to the end of her email: “I communicated with my EEOC investigator and this is all I can say. County personnel issues are confidential and I must honor that confidentiality. EEOC charges have the potential of becoming court cases, so I can say no more.” And now Steel is running for office, but as of yet, refuses to explain to voters the circumstances surrounding the last two years of her employment at the county. The county’s treatment of Steel would seem to be some of the best evidence out there that a professional manager is needed. Is it any wonder that she seemed so supportive of the idea? ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

LC FINALLY CHOOSES A NEW DIRECTOR

even though our tracking data unequivocally show the same large, tagged tiger sharks were present in Maui waters, and visiting Maui ocean recreation sites, throughout the entire 2013-2015 period. Oahu-tagged sharks were also visiting these sites during that period. Thus, even though more unprovoked shark bites occurred around Maui in 2012, 2013 and 2014 than in any previous year since records began, the reasons for these ‘spikes’ remain unclear.” While the research shows a very real shark preference for Maui waters, it doesn’t mean that the odds of getting bitten by a shark are anything beyond remote (far more people die every year from snorkeling, for instance, than shark bites, as a Jan. 12, 2016 Honolulu Civil Beat story shows). And as far as what we should do about this new understanding that tiger sharks love Maui’s near-shore waters as much as we do, state officials are taking the approach that people should educate themselves and not pretend this isn’t reality (and also that they NOT undertake shark culls, which researchers note

For the last seven months, Traci Fujita Villarosa has been both the Deputy Director and the acting Director of the Maui County Department of Liquor Control. The Liquor Commission’s numerous attempts to replace former Director Frank Silva has been a “circus,” one former member of the LC told me recently. On May 24, the circus tent finally came down when the Liquor Commission appointed former LC Deputy Director Glenn Mukai to be the LC’s new director. Given the familial history that run deeps throughout LC history, it’s almost to be expected that Mukai’s daughter Karilee Yoshizawa is both a current high-ranking official at the LC and one of the director applicants. In fact, Fujita Villarosa was the sole director applicant who didn’t have some sort of nepotistic connection to the LC (Layne Silva, the fourth applicant, is former Director Silva’s son). After briefly opening the meeting at 10:30am, during which it took testimony from two former LC officials–former Liquor Control Officer James Kendrick and former LC Deputy Director Wayne Pagan (both of which endorsed Fujita Villarosa)–and Fujita Villarosa herself, who during her testimony acknowledged a whisper campaign against her (“Rumors are not facts,” she told the commissioners obliquely, “please consider the source”), the commission once again huddled in private “executive session” with Corporation Counsel Ed Kushi while it re-interviewed the four director applicants. Later that afternoon, the commission took more public testimony from former LC Adjudication Board chairman Jason Medeiros and current LC Boards and Commissions Secretary Sarah Cordeiro. Both endorsed Fujita Villarosa. Michael Kawagishi, who used to run the LC’s licensing section, also testified, though he vigorously opposed Fujita

Villarosa, saying he has seen her “bully” a licensee and “makes decisions based on her biases” (strangely, Kawagishi also testified that one of Fujita Villarosa’s faults was that she “wrote a mediocre job evaluation for me”). Frank Silva also testified, though he never formally endorsed a candidate. “Some of the problems we have now are my doing,” he said. “Morale [at the LC] is at an all-time low.” Then Silva told the commission about the long list of health troubles he’s currently facing–prostate cancer, colon damage and two strokes.

Institute of Marine Biology researchers Carl G. Meyer, James M. Anderson, Daniel M. Coffey, Melanie R. Hutchinson, Mark A. Royer and Kim N. Holland goes a long way to explaining why it is that sharks seem to like Maui so much. Titled Spatial Dynamics of Tiger Sharks (Galeocerdo Cuvier) Around Maui and Oahu, the report explains that the waters between Maui, Lanai and Kaho‘olawe offer a wonderful habitat for sharks, though researchers still can’t say for certain why Maui saw such an uptick in shark bites in 2013-2014. This very brief excerpt from the new report explains this in greater detail: “Overall, our results suggest the insular shelf surrounding Maui Nui is an important natural habitat for Hawaii tiger sharks, and consequently large tiger sharks are routinely and frequently present in the waters off ocean recreation sites around Maui,” states the report. “This may explain why Maui has had more shark bites than other Main Hawaiian Islands, although we cannot exclude differences in the numbers of ocean

NEW REPORT EXPLAINS WHY MAUI’S WATERS ARE SO POPULAR WITH SHARKS We’ve known for some years now that sharks–especially tiger sharks–seem to love the waters around Maui more than any other Hawaiian island. We reported that story a year ago (“Sharks Love Maui,” May 13, 2015). In fact, shark incident data going back two decades shows that Maui waters have hosted a lot more shark incidents than those surrounding any other Hawaiian island. Now, after two years of research, a new 75-page report that was commissioned by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and written by University of Hawaii and Hawaii

recreation activities between Maui and other islands as the primary cause of inter-island differences in shark bite rates. Despite the natural presence of large sharks in waters around Maui, the risk of shark bite remains relatively low and variable between years. Notably, 2015 saw only 1 unprovoked shark bite in Maui waters whereas there were 5-8 bites in 2013-2014. This variability exists

have historically done nothing whatsoever to reduce shark incidents). “This study provided us with important new insights into tiger shark movement behavior around Maui, and helps answer some questions about why that island has led the state recently in shark bites,” said Dr. Bruce Anderson, the administrator for DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources, in a Mar. 19 news release from the governor’s office. “We agree with the study’s recommendation that the best approach to reducing numbers of these incidents is to raise public awareness of what people can do to reduce their risk of being bitten. This has been our focus for a long time. People who enter the ocean have to understand and appreciate that it is essentially a wilderness experience. It’s the shark’s house, not ours.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

THREE VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED IN MEMORY OF BLACKIE GADARIAN The civic spirit of the late Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian lives on, in the form of three $1,000 vocational scholarships recently given out to Lahainaluna High School seniors. At a Senior Scholarship and Awards program on May 10, Gadarian’s wife Sara and Gary Kepner presented the awards. A statement forward to us by Sara Gadarian describes the import of the scholarships, and their namesake: “Mrs. Gadarian pointed out that they were wearing Blackie’s Boat Yard bright orange work shirts,” reads the May 22 statement. “Blackie Gadarian was known as a very colorful character,

and his trademark orange came from the early days of Blackie’s Boat Yard in Newport Beach. The boatyard started in 1964 with an empty lot and used machinery. A friend in the hardware business gave Blackie a large pail of red lead primer, which was used to keep the machinery from rusting further. After a year or two, the only color paint that would cover the primer was bright orange. So the orange color was used on the machinery, the tugboat, trucks, and continued after they moved to Lahaina in 1979 to the trucks and machinery in Blackie’s Boat Yard and Blackie’s Machine Shop, the roof of Blackie’s Bar, and to the current day home and workshop on Luakini Street.” Since 1981, the Gardarians have awarded 209 scholarships to students interested in pursuing automotive and/ or woodworking vocations, according to the news release. According to Sara Gadarian, here are the three students who won this year’s awards: • Junior Moala wants to go into construction. He recently interned at the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort in the Engineering Department, doing furniture and room repairs. • Andrew Vicente is planning on a career in refrigeration or automotive skills. He also participated in the Auto Skills Competition in 2015. • Jakob Opunui wants to get an Automotive Technician certification at University of Hawaii Maui College. He’s worked on many cars that members of the community brought to the Lahainaluna’s automotive shop. Students from Baldwin High School will present an intimate perspective of Hawaii Commercial and Sugar’s impending shutdown in Pu‘unene with poignant portraits of two long-time HC&S employees on a HIKI NO episode that is available to view online at PBS Hawaii’s website (PBSHawaii.org/hikino). The Baldwin students conceived the episode when hearing that by year’s end, Hawaii’s last remaining sugar mill, Hawaii Commercial & Sugar, will close in Pu‘unene, Maui, leaving 675 employees without jobs. The students chose to tell the story through the eyes of machinist Wes Bissen and millwright Koa Martin, who are both continuing their families’ legacy of working at HC&S. Martin’s father and grandfather worked at HC&S, and Bissen’s father was also a machinist for the company. The two reflect on their careers and their families’ histories with the company. They also discuss the state funds being allotted to help the laid off workers through the transition. “It’s sad that they’re going to close, but we’re all big boys,” Bissen says in Baldwin High’s story. “We’ve got to focus on how it’s going to affect everybody and just try to build a better life from here on.” The episode will also feature two other stories created for broadcast by Maui students; Students from Kamehameha Schools Maui Middle School introduce the viewers to a surfer-turned-chef who runs the popular Like Poke food truck on Maui; and students from Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahu-

lui show the PBS audience how a married couple is living out its golden years at a Maui senior day care center. HIKI NO is Hawaii’s first statewide student news network, made up of 90 public, private and charter schools from across the islands. Through the production of video news stories about their schools and communities, students gain valuable workforce and life skills, while teachers engage their students in hands-on, collaborative learning.

Casey and Sonni Hoenscheid. Hoenscheid and Oregon’s Finona Wylde– two of the world’s top ranked paddlers– competed in a stroke for stroke showdown with Hoenscheid pulling ahead to take the win. Other highlights included the Men’s OC-2 which was won by two-man canoe team Junya McGurn and his cousin, legendary waterman Dave Kalama. The race was followed by an ‘Ohana Festival, which featured entertainment by the Old Lahaina Luau, prize draws, Grom Camp and SIC Maui Relay. Food trucks for the event were provided by Teddy’s Bigger Burgers and Like Poke. Trophies were presented to the top three finishers in each division; also, a special honor went to Bluesmiths Waterwear’s John Smalley, who has been the event’s Title Sponsor since its inception and continues to make it a success year after year. The annual race has reportedly raised more than $100,000 to fund Camp Imua during its five years on Maui.

GOOGLE SEES THE FUTURE Google filed a U.S. Patent Office application on April 28 for a vision-improvement device in liquid form that, once inserted (i.e., injected directly into the eyeball!), solidifies into not only a lens replacement for the eye but an instrument that carries its own storage, radio and wireless power supply. The idea, according to inventor Andrew Jason Conrad, is to better focus light onto the retina. (The patent process does not assure that the device will ever come to fruition, but it might indicate that Google’s parent, Alphabet, is concerned that other inventors might be doing similar work.)

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT! Before new parents ruin their baby daughter’s chances of future success by giving her “weak” names (such as Polly), they should consult one of several services that recommend more powerful ones (such as Elizabeth). A New York City woman offers personalized naming research for fees starting at several hundred dollars, but a Swiss agency whose primary work is helping to name product brands now offers parents suggestions on their offspring’s “brand” (for corporate-like fees beginning at around $29,000). (Parents in South Korea and India traditionally seek baby-naming recommendations from priests, who review religious text, culture and astrology–in exchange for modest offerings.)

WHAT’S THE PRODUCT AGAIN? Entrepreneur.com reported in April the surprising success of “Ship Your Enemies Glitter,” in which, for about $10, the startup sends an envelope full of glitter that, when opened, scatters, irritating (or enraging) the recipient. The concept was an overnight sensation, but quickly petered out and was seemingly worthless–until a prescient businessman offered $85,000 for its two assets: (1) a valuable list of customers who might buy similar pranks (such as a cupcake that’s really horse manure) and (2) an opportunity at additional waves of customers newly discovering the original glitter product. The $85,000 purchaser now reports sales “in the high six figures.”

Peter Jensen of Athol, Idaho, filed a lawsuit against the state transportation department in April after his driving privileges were revoked because his car had no license plate. For the inconvenience, he believes he deserves $5.6 million in damages (gold and silver only, please) because, for example, there is nothing about “license plates” in the Ten Commandments.

SIMPLE AS THAT Bingham County (Idaho) Sheriff Craig Rowland told reporters in March that the state legislature had no reason to improve the statewide administration of “rape kit”

evidence because the majority of local rape accusations are, he is certain, consensual sex. And Scout Hodge, 20, angry at his mother, was charged with arson in Austin, Texas, in January for setting fire to her rug. He told police he did it as a “political” statement (unexplained) and to prove he isn’t a “loser.”

MODERN PROBLEMS Sophia Sanchez, 27, was charged with intentionally crashing her car into her boyfriend’s vehicle in April in Riverside, Illinois. According to police, the couple had been arguing the night before, and Sanchez said she felt she had to disable his car so that he would talk to her. And William Timothy Thomas, 25, was arrested for vandalizing a home in Largo, Florida, in April. He told police he needed to go “destroy” stuff because he “listened to too much music and masturbated too much.” (Bonus: Three first names! Special police surveillance warranted!)

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS As China’s real-estate construction boom fades, tempers have flared, and according to a local government officer in Hebei province, two companies’ officials angling for a contract wildly dueled each other in their bulldozers in an incident captured on video. The losing driver was seen running from his toppled machine. And Italy’s top appeals court ruled in April that a homeless man stealing cheese and sausage from a grocery story in Genoa, and who received a six-month jail term for it, was actually not guilty of criminal behavior at all. The court set him free using a traditional Italian legal principle that no one is required to do the impossible– which, the court surmised, would be to allow himself to starve.

LEAST COMPETENT COPS Motorist Rebecca Musarra was stopped for speeding in October 2015 by state troopers in New Jersey, and dutifully handed over her license, insurance and registration, but declined to answer the troopers’ “do you know why we stopped you” questions. Annoyed at her silence, troopers Matthew Stazzone and Demetric Gosa threatened several times, with increasing aggressiveness (according to dashboard video obtained by NJ Advance Media), to arrest Musarra for “obstruction.” Musarra pointed out that–as nearly every American knows–she has the right to remain silent. The troopers nonetheless arrested her (then recited, of course, her “right to remain silent”). After nearly two hours back at the station, a supervisor offered a weak apology and released her. Musarra, an attorney, unsurprisingly has filed a federal lawsuit. ■

MOLOKAI MULES It’s the best way to see Kalaupapa

Other transportation options to the county include hiking down the trail and also flying into their small airport, but you can’t wander the streets. In order to secure a permit to visit the National Park you must go through Damien Tours. However the mule ride operation is happy to take care of all of that for you. Once you get off the mules and stretch your legs, it’s time to hop on the bus. They take you to several different points of interest in Kalaupapa, as well as the bookstore where you can buy postcards,

ible park that overlooks the cliffs where the first Hansen’s Disease inhabitants were forced to swim to shore. Then back in town you’ll visit the St. Francis church, a Catholic monument of stained glass and statues. The Damien Tour guide was very knowledgeable, a fascinating conduit into the history of the region. Four hours later you’re back on your mule, riding out of town. You’ll be happy you took a mule when you pass by hikers heading up the 1,700 foot climb. With only a few Hansen’s Disease patients re-

The newest group of tour guides and mule skinners showed just as much aloha as before. The tour started with Buzzy’s son, Sale Sproat, matching up our group with our mules and showing us how to ride. The mules all have funny names and personalities, and the skinners like to say the mules choose you. The main thing they teach you

Once topside at the Mule Ride, you bid your mule goodbye, then the tour guides give you a certificate of completion as a memento. You will visit St. Marianne’s monument and grave, and drive by other spots like the old hospital ruins, the longhouse and the Bishop home for girls. Then you’ll drive out to the original church Father Damien built and old grave sites of the first colony on the far side of the peninsula. You’ll stop for lunch in this incred-

They say mules are much better than horses for the trail because a mule never takes a risky step. Slow and steady is how they roll. The trail had been fabricated with steps here and there, and widened. It was nicer than I remembered. The trip is a full day of activity, for the real tour starts at the bottom in Kalawao County, when you get on the yellow bus ran by Damien Tours.

Molokai mule ride started in the 1970s with paniolo and legendary mule skinner Buzzy Sproat. He was the heart of the mule operation that offered visitors a glimpse of Molokai’s original Father Damien church. I met Buzzy when he took me down the treacherous trail in the early 1990s, back when the passage was just a muddy, ruddy, mule-stomped track. I was afraid after his sad passing in 2014 that the mule ride might stop or change, but his partner Roy Horner, wife Marlene and other ohana

One of Maui’s unexpected treats is getting even better

creativity. There will always be unique new challenges to face and new opportunities to try new things. What these grapes are capable of is not yet defined, so we have no restrictions or rules to follow. It’s exciting!” The Maui Winery is also making some other upgrades on the property. They recently opened the King’s Visit Tasting Tour. An intimate group limited to 10 starts at the “old jail,” which also served as office of Captain James Makee, who ran the Ulupalakua Ranch in the later 19th century. It’s all decked out and renovated inside, but the old charm remains captured in the ancient mortar of the walls in the building. Our tour host, Ken Goring, started off with a casual reception of Lokelani rose champagne while he explained a bit of the colorful history behind the building and the region. After the champagne, it was time to take a walk into the behind the scenes operation of the winery. Among the great vats of fermenting pineapple and grapes, Goring gave a sample taste of some unfinished hooch straight out of the stainless steel columns while

the glass. The historical displays in the tasting room is temporarily down while they work on construction, but it will be back in July, better than before. Here you have the opportunity to taste a few of the cottage selections like the incredible raspberry dessert wine. “If someone leaves having had a good time, having had an experience that was worthy of their time, that’s a success,” said Hegele. “The icing on the cake is when they ‘get it’–the significance of this space and why we do what we do here. There’s a genuineness. Ulupalakua has preserved its identity, an identity that was shaped over 150 years ago and is still alive. Exposing people to and having them realize what this place was and is, whether it’s the grape vines and wine that’s interesting or the ranching and farming, the history, the trees, the buildings, awesome burgers or just incredibly beautiful places. We’re a part of Maui that’s not expected–a winery on a cattle ranch isn’t the first thing you think of when you think of Maui.” ■

hen you picture the Ulupalakua winery tasting room, do you think of pineapple wine and tour buses? You’re not alone if you do–the pineapple wine has clearly been the most popular bottle with visitors for decades. But what you may not know is that tour buses coming from Hana are no longer stopping here without a reservation at the tasting room. That way the level of service, and the ability to sip and savor selections from their vineyard and winery, continues the way Maui Wines envisions for their guests. This is not the Tedeschi Vineyards of yesteryear. The winery is taking on modern winemaking, and recently hired a new winemaker: Rachel Joy. I recently asked Joe Hegele, the marketing director, to define their vision. “We just want to continue to make interesting wines that represent the place they are grown, nothing more important than that,” said Hegele. “As far into the future as I can see this vineyard will still be about experimentation, discovery, and

he explained the different wine processes employed at Maui Winery. Further along we gazed on the bottling operation, that, despite the winery’s small size, employs some pretty high level industry tech. Back in the King’s tasting room we all took a seat around the community table set with a selection of wine glasses ready to take to their purpose. A pour of chenin blanc got us off the ground, and Goring’s head was filled with knowledge of these wines to share. The table was set with little bites nicely suited to the wines. We tasted voigner, syrah, grenache and malbec. With each sip I had a difficult time finding my favorite. They’re all exquisite, and I was impressed with these small batches of wine that grew grapes grown on volcanic soil just down the road. In the final part of the King’s tour, the group took another walk to converge on the King’s Cottage, the place King Kalakaua used to stay when visiting Rose Ranch. This room has undergone lot of changes, and they’re building a spot on the deck to enjoy wine by

JOURNEYING TO OLD HAWAII PHOTO BY FORREST & KIM STARR

Requires an adventure on the road to Hana

Pi’ilanihale Heiau at Kahanu Gardens

Y

Road in Hana, located right before the Wainapanapa State Park turn-off and the Hana Airport, and I wanted to stop at Hana Ranch for a tour and to see their new food truck. Just out of Hana Town on the slopes above Koki Beach, I had the Hana Ranch burger at their food truck, which comes with salad, green iced tea and a papaya smoothie. Of course, this is as farm-to-food truck as it gets–the ingredients practically tumble down from the mountain behind the truck. My driver/husband had the mahi sandwich and was seriously impressed, saying it was the best fish sandwich ever. They have a restroom, farm-stand and picnic tables. For the full farm-to-sandwich experience, book a tour at the ranch. Depending on who’s available, someone comes down to meet you by the food truck and you take off for the fields just up the road. They’re growing such a wide variety of crops there, employing new techniques, crop rotations, experimenting with new edible plants and planting the tried and true canoe crops, too. A new field of 200 Ulu trees (breadfruit), from Kahanu Gardens,

and do a self-guided tour (Saturdays are 9am to 2pm). Children under 12 are free. The garden is home to the largest collection of Ulu trees in the state with more than 150 varieties. All around the Pi‘ilanihale heiau are plaques explaining the plants, history and region. The heiau is breathtaking. It’s immense–the largest heiau in the state, in fact. Built in several phases, beginning in the 13th century and ending in the 16th century. Hana was an important place then with plenty of commerce. It was a big player in ancient Hawaii and you feel it here. And by the way, No Climbing! Surrounding the backside is one of the last untouched Hala forests, and to the front and shoreline there’s a thatched canoe hale replicated in recent times that you can walk to and sit under. Although this was my first visit to Pi‘ilanihale and Kahanu Gardens, I know this will be one of my Hana destinations for years to come. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more thing to do in Maui County, visit: mauitime.com/activities

ou don’t hear too much about Hawaiian history before Kamehameha I, but of course Hawaiian royalty and culture started centuries before his birth. One of the best places to get a feel for the mana of ancient Hawaii is at the Kahanu Gardens in Hana, home of Pi‘ilanihale heiau. But to get to it, you must adventure to Hana. If camping is an option or desire on your trip to East Maui, contact Camp Maui. They have camping kits to loan you. It starts at about $60 for a two-person set-up for three nights. They can also set you up with air mattresses, sleeping pads, family-size kits, kama‘aina specials and firewood. These guys are serious about camping, and can give you the inside scoop on where to camp and how to get permits. They have a kiosk in Kihei, but they also have mobile delivery and pick up. Of course, spending the night in Hana is highly recommended if you can swing it, but I decided to stop making excuses and just drive out for the day. The Kahanu Gardens National Botanical Garden is on Ulaino

is coming along, but won’t fruit for eight years. In the papaya field we picked one of their non-GMO papayas that go into their papaya ginger smoothie and cracked it open for a taste. Growing food isn’t revolutionary, but seeing the vision that Grant McCargo, CEO of Bio-Logical Capital and Brian McGinness, Operations Director of Hana Ranch, have makes it feel very cutting edge there. We headed to Kahanu Gardens after a quick dip in the fresh water caves of Wainapanapa. This National Botanical Garden was established in the 1970s when the descendants of Chief Kahanu and Hana Ranch deeded the land to the Pacific Tropical Botanical Garden (as it was known then) to create the Kahanu Garden. In exchange, the organization promised to restore the Pi‘ilanihale heiau and provide unfailing protection for the sacred site and open it to the public. Subsequent purchases have grown the garden to 464 acres from its original 61. Kahanu Garden is open from 9am until 4pm every Monday through Friday, and it costs $10 per person entry or $5 for kama‘aina to get in

That '70s Show There’s a lot to like in the new action comedy ‘The Nice Guys’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 116 Min.

S

hane Black’s action/comedy The Nice Guys takes place in 1977, the year I was born, and vividly recreates a world that will appear alien to many. Set in Los Angeles, we see a time when there are no home computers, as newspapers and the evening news are prime sources of information. The color brown is prevalent and the Hollywood sign appears ready to collapse. Instead of superhero movies and sequels, movie theaters visibly offer multitudes of pornographic and exploitation films. We’re offered glimpses of the ‘70s oil crisis, with long lines of cars waiting for gas (though anyone who buys their gas at Costco can still see this today). Along with David Fincher’s Zodiac and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, Black’s latest captures the details of a lost era with such fidelity, the movie will play like a time machine for some. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe star as private investigators, initially at odds, who

team up to investigate the disappearance of a woman named Amelia. Their search leads them to powerful figures in both the pornography and automotive industry. Black is the best and worst ingredient here, as this is a big-budget, anythinggoes manifestation of his fiendish imagination. I wish this were among Black’s best pulp thriller throwbacks, which include the sensational, under-appreciated The Long Kiss Goodnight, the hysterically funny and thrilling Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (which showcases Robert Downey Jr.’s funniest performance) and his highly influential Lethal Weapon. The Nice Guys is closer to his uneven and relentlessly mean Bruce Willis vehicle, The Last Boy Scout. I enjoy both of those movies but wish they were better and not so nasty. While not an obvious choice for his role, Crowe finds the heart of his character and is good at capturing a man in need of respectability. Gosling is hilarious, once again demonstrating how potent he can be in comedies. He may be one of the best dramatic actors around but Gosling is a force of nature in farcical turns like this one. Kim Basinger’s re-teaming with Crowe for the first time

Yes, in the 1970s car seats and jackets were made of the same material

since L.A. Confidential is unfortunate, as her performance is off and never connects. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that Keith David has a supporting role as one of the cluster of vicious heavies. David once co-starred in John Carpenter’s They Live, where he and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper performed one of the longest and most legendary fight scenes in cinema history. In this film, David and Crowe have a brawl that’s impressively staged and exceptionally violent. In addition to being set in the 1970’s, The Nice Guys feels like a movie that could have been released during that decade as well. This is a mostly-smart, character-driven script that takes its time to develop the intricate story. And it’s extremely profane and un-PC with plenty of violence and nudity. That being said, it’s also one of the least predictable

comedies I’ve seen this year and it can catch you off guard with its savage wit. The grand finale, which incorporates a foot chase, a shoot-out, free-falls from a building and an underwater hallucination, is sensational. Everything connects in the final act, including a funny tease for an unlikely sequel. A holdover from both Black’s The Last Boy Scout and Iron Man 3 is the presence of a young child who serves as a witness to the events and provides the loose moral center. Here, it’s Angourie Rice playing Gosling’s insightful daughter. Danielle Harris played a similar part in The Last Boy Scout as Willis’ daughter and it felt equally dubious. Rice is first rate but the role made me uncomfortable. It’s worth noting that someone on-screen questions why Rice’s character is present during this violent, sleaze-drenched investigation. Great question! ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Procrastinating now would be stupid. Even more so than usual; simply delaying one extra day would mean the difference between success and complete, mortifying failure. Being laidback, patient, or lazy at this point could cost you everything on the table, and then some. If you can possibly act now, do it. Waiting only makes the situation less viable, more likely to explode in your face. This week’s astrological influences are positively screaming: “Now or never!” Get off your hot little ass and make it happen immediately; if you go for it later, instead, you’ll just be knocked right back on it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Cancers aren’t particularly materialistic, but there’s no denying you like being comfortable. However, this week you need to shed even your penchant for coziness, because almost everything important you could get up to lies well outside your comfort zone. Oddly, the main challenge here is not getting stuck on missing some of the amenities (emotional or practical) you’re used to (or worse, whining about their absence). Once you’ve finally accepted that you’ll need to get your hands dirty and work up a sweat, with only a cold shower to look forward to afterwards, the rest will be a piece of cake. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’re the skinny kid who’s been taking the long way home from school, to avoid the bullies who threaten you daily. Consequently, you’ve been missing out on a lot, and not just your favorite afternoon cartoon. But luckily this week you’ve got someone on your side who’s able to stand up to those you can’t face–they might even be one of the former bullies. Sticking to your safe, self-damaging habits despite this alliance isn’t doing it, or yourself, justice. Take the short route home from school and add some things back into your life that you’ve been missing, because now you can. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Sometimes you simply rub some picky people the wrong way. It has nothing to do with your value as a person. Maybe it’s some kind of chemical pheromonal thing. In certain folk, you produce instant irritation. I don’t know why you’d let it bother you so much, though. This phenomenon happens to everyone (you actually suffer it less frequently than nearly every other sign). This week might be challenging, as you’re likely to be forced to interact, at length, with one of those who finds you irksome. Don’t let it get to you, since there’s nothing you can do about it (and trying only makes things worse). Just be yourself. Nine times out of ten, these guys come around when they’re forced to; once they get used to your scent, they might find they actually like you quite a lot. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

You know that feeling–you finally see an over-hyped film and are kind of let down because it fails to live up to your enhanced expectations. The bad news is that right now you are that film. It’s not that you’re bad–just not quite living up to what people expected of you, so they’re more likely to focus on all the ways you let them down instead of all the things you did magnificently. Fortunately, unlike a film, you’re a work in progress, not a finished piece. So even though you’re battling unreasonable expectations, you can still keep striving to get closer to them. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Screw your reputation as a badass. You have nothing to prove: We already know you’re strong, and definitely not a quitter by nature. But does that mean you have to be stupid? All signs indicate that you need to retreat from this battle. Back off. It doesn’t mean you’re weak, just that this particular scenario isn’t meant to be. If you try to force it, you’ll simply fail spectacularly, and look really stupid in the process. Please, baby, let go of the ego bullshit. Heed the advice of your friends, family, and me, and call it quits, just this once.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Diligently avoid relying on luck this week. That bad habit of yours could get you crushed under a bus or something, as Murphy’s Law is powerfully in effect at the moment. You can’t prevent the countless minor accidents that will befall you–bumping into doorframes, tripping over cracks in the sidewalk, and stepping on toes left and right. Don’t sweat it; these are forgivable and reparable offenses–unlike dying. Avoid dangerous situations this week—and that includes crossing the street against the light. Just play it safe for once, since luck isn’t especially on your side. Who knows? It might be an interesting change of pace.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

I’m sure, in your most frightened moments, you wish you could put a magic forcefield around yourself. It would shield you from fire, flood, heartache, and flu. But in your bravest moments you know that even if you could protect yourself from these things (and you can, to some extent), life without risk isn’t all that fulfilling, interesting, or worthwhile. There are times to be cautious, and times to put it all on the line. You know which this is. You’re walking the narrow line between boldness and cowardice, but you can’t keep doing it. You’ll fall off (into fear) or step off (towards courage) any minute now. Which you do is up to you.

tattoos by Rachel G

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You’re from such different worlds that you have trouble recognizing what’s special about the other. You’re a scarab, they’re a spider. Sure, you blundered into their web, but you’re too big for them to eat. And their eyes aren’t equipped to notice the iridescent prettiness of your shell. Your encounter might simply be an unfortunate coincidence, not kismet (as you’ve both been fantasizing). But what the hell do I know? Well, I know this: unless you really start to understand them–and vice versa, naturally–you’re screwed. Take a class, get counseling, dosomething–or just give it up. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Admit it, you cultivate mystery. It’s partially a defense mechanism; if you shroud yourself in smoke and mirrors, no one ever gets to realize or notice that you don’t quite understand yourself. It’s nothing to be ashamed of; but it is something to cop to. Blaming someone for not being able to wrap their head around what you’re about is hardly fair, considering it’s beyond your own capability as well. I’m not asking that you unravel the enigma that is you (as if that was possible). I’m just asking that you forgive others for being unable to do so. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re being held back by rubber bands, thousands of them. Stretchy emotional elastic is preventing you from going where you want to go and doing what you want to do. You’re only just realizing it’s there; before now, that flexibility imparted the illusion of freedom. Now that you know the truth, you’ve got a choice: Can you live within the admittedly spacious and flexible confines your bonds define? After all, you didn’t even notice them until now. Or should you snap those metaphorical rubber bands? You’re certainly more than strong enough, but be warned: if you choose this route, it’s going to hurt, at both ends.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Why you’re trying to tone down your idiosyncrasies is beyond me–it’s not like you’re the weirdest weirdo out there. It’s also not likely that anyone who’s lucky enough to get to be intimate with you won’t find out about them anyway. If they’re going to be repulsed or frightened by what isn’t very repulsive or frightening, wouldn’t it be better that you found out now, before you got more involved? I say wear your freakhood badge on your sleeve. It might mean fewer people are interested in you. But you could also look at it another way: those remaining are interested in you.
