MAUI MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO COUNTY MANAGER Looks like county residents moved one step closer to maybe perhaps getting to vote on a

Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, which is chaired by termed-out Councilman Mike Victorino. Though Victorino has long been listed as a potential future mayoral candidate, he’s also recently said that he intends “to carefully review all the charter amendments submitted by my colleagues or the public and decide which are worthy of a public discussion in committee.”

In other words, we’ll just have to wait and see what Victorino does. Because if the County Council is serious about getting this amendment on the November ballot, then they’ll have to act quickly.

HAWAII’S FAVORITE BABY NAMES A couple weeks ago the Social Security Administration sent out a press release listing the top baby names in the U.S.

It would seem like Maui County Corporation Counsel Patrick “The Gambler” Wong’s luck has turned, and not for the better. On Saturday, May 14, The Maui News reported that Wong’s latest financial disclosure statement reports that he only won “between $1,000 and $9,999” in Las Vegas last year.

For most people, this would be wonderful news. But for Wong, who enjoys playing poker, craps and slots in Vegas hotels like Harrah’s and the MGM Grand, usually brings home a lot more in winnings. Last year, I went through Wong’s disclosure statements dating back to 2011. “[T]hey show that since 2011, Wong has earned somewhere between $500,000 and $1.2 million gambling in Vegas,” I wrote in our June 18, 2015 cover story “Maui County Corporation Counsel Pat Wong loves gambling in Las Vegas. And he wins a lot, too.”

Though the forms show that since 2012, Wong hasn’t brought home less than $50,000 in winnings from Vegas, Wong’s gambling success was largely a secret–even among his colleagues in the county. An search through The Maui News’ online archives also indicates that their May 14 story was the first time the paper had written about Wong’s gambling.

In any case, Wong wouldn’t talk to me last year when I started asking county officials about Wong’s lucrative hobby.

“He doesn’t want to talk,” county Communications Director Rod Antone told me a few days before my 2015 story came out. “Not because he’s being cagey, but because he doesn’t want to jinx it. And if he starts losing after this article comes out, he’s gonna blame you.”

But hey–winning between a grand and 10 grand is still winning, right? Right?!

On Monday, May 9, the county’s Special Committee on County Governance voted 6-3 in favor of placing a charter amendment on the November ballot that would institute a new “county manager” form of government in Maui County, according to the May 10 Maui News. Local activists and government-watchers who’ve long advocated just such a change were heartened by the vote.

“If enacted, the effect would be to place dayto-day county operations in the hands of a professional manager hired by the [Maui County] Council while retaining a popularly elected mayor with veto power, who would continue to represent the county inter-governmentally and who would appoint citizens to boards and commissions,” said Mark Hyde, who’s been pushing for a county manager form of government, in a May 9 email blast. “This is step #1 in a three step process, the next being Council approval of the Resolution followed by approval by the people in November.”

The 11-member committee (two members were excused from the final vote) had a lot of options before them, and they seem to have opted for the most moderate change that can still fall under the “county manager” classification. Many counties lack any sort of elected mayor, but the committee opted to keep ours, though with the power to hire and fire department heads given to the new professional manager, the mayoral job will largely be ceremonial (which helps explain why people like current Mayor Alan Arakawa and current county Managing Director Keith Regan– who is running this year for the Maui County Council–hate the idea so much).

Instead, this charter amendment would move the real day-to-day management of the county’s various departments to a professional, hired and overseen by the Maui County Council. The upside? Department heads will get their jobs because of experience and expertise, rather than any sort of personal relationship with the mayor. This is wonderful, but there’s also a danger: a future county manager would simply learn to “count to five”–build a coalition of five allies on the County Council and then pretty much do as he or she sees fit.

So Noah is really popular with parents both nationally and here in Hawaii. In fact, the top three boys names in Hawaii are the same nationally (though Ezekiel and Aiden didn’t make the national top 10 list). But for girls, Hawaii mothers like Emma fine enough, but are really loving Mia, which is only the sixth most popular girl’s name nationally.

EVERYONE WINS AT THE SEVENTH ANNUAL HAWAII STEM CONFERENCE More than 800 students, teachers and industry professionals participated in The Hawaii STEM Conference May 6-7 at the Wailea Marriott Resort. The two-day conference hosted more than 43 student breakout sessions, 16 teacher professional development breakout sessions and 15 STEM competitions. A total of 112 schools and organizations statewide were represented.

“Programs like this STEM Conference where you can go and explore your passion is really the best,” said Luke Jones, a senior at Kihei Charter School. “Every time I come, there’s always something new and I’m excited to learn more.”

The seventh annual statewide STEM Conference was presented by Maui Economic Development Board’s (MEDB) Women in Technology (WIT) project.

Event organizers said the annual event proved once again that everyone’s a winner when it comes to STEM education, whether it is by empowering youth through STEM programs; providing teachers with needed STEM-based resources and tools; or inspiring Hawaii’s next generation of innovative thinkers and doers–STEM has a far-reaching impact.

“What I like best about the conference were the breakout sessions,” said Raymond Andrade, a senior at Baldwin High School. “It’s one big get together of all these schools, trying the latest technologies and working together. Whether it be coding or engineering or math-based programs or digital media, there’s a session for practically everyone here which is pretty amazing and well organized.”

Students also had the opportunity to participate with others from around the state in STEM competitions. “One of the big benefits for students attending this conference was they got to meet other students who have similar interests,” said Keith Imada, a STEMworks facilitator at

Maui High School. “As teachers, a lot of times we put students together who are in STEM or science, but they don’t always have the same interests. But here, they have similar goals, motivations, frustrations, and accomplishments. They are proud of what they’ve done and get to share with other students who understand what they’ve gone through.”

The winners of this year’s competitions were announced during the May 7 awards ceremony. The event featured numerous student winners from Maui County.

Bernard Sula and Milmar Villanueva from Maui High School won the On-Site Video Competition; Maya Ooki, Jeremie Amano, Kai Richardson and Michael Reeves from King Kekaulike High School won the On-Site Cyber Spyware Competition; and Zoe Whitney and Allyza Sayno from Maui High School won the On-Site Design Pitch Competition.

Other Maui winners included Emmanair Rich (King Kekaulike High School), who won the Music Competition; Allyza Sayno (Maui High), who won the Photography Design Competition; and Maui High’s Shanell Pugal, Jada Chang, Roxanne Agtang, Sydney Dempsey and Jordyn Paa won the PSA Competition.

Maui High’s Kyle Alquisalas and Jake Arnsbrak won the STEMworks Tech Tips Competition. The T-Shirt Design Competition honors went to King K’s Thanthawat Moengchaisong. The What is STEMworks Competition honors went to Evan Aquinde, Jayboy Badua, Josh Cui and Jadynne Zane from Maui Waena Intermediate School.

Christine Alonzo, Czerena Bayle, Tiana-Lei Juan and Jadynne Zane, also from Maui Waena Intermediate School, won the Inter PIA Competition; and Baldwin’s Chelsea Kau and Shanelle Macaraeg won the High School PIA Competition.

“The high energy 5x5 sessions were invaluable for students as it offered them a rare opportunity to have direct access to professionals in the STEM field,” said

Emily Haines-Swatek, Career and Technical Education coordinator and MEDB’s STEMworks teacher at King Kekaulike High School. “They got an idea of the wide variety of careers available, as well as the benefits and challenges they may face on the road to such a career.”

This 2016 conference theme was “download knowledge, upload service” which emphasized the role the conference played in promoting and developing the skills of students to become innovative thinkers.

“One of our goals in providing these types of STEM events and programs is to encourage our youth to use STEM as a tool for making a positive difference in their community,” said Isla Young, MEDB’s K-12 STEM Program Director. “By all of us working together we can help Hawaii’s students access the wonderful world of STEM and provide experiences that will foster the next generation of innovators, educators, and leaders.”

MAUI FILIPINO CHAMBER WILL SOON HAND OUT GINTONG PAMANA AWARDS The Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce will honor leaders from Maui’s Filipino community June 16 at the 2016 Gintong Pamana Leadership and Scholarship Awards, which will be held at Maui Beach Hotel. The prestigious Gintong Pamana (Golden Heritage) Leadership Award will be presented to six outstanding individuals. The Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation also will award $1,000 scholarships each to

select high school seniors and to a recipient from the Maui Culinary Academy at University of Hawaii Maui College.

“The awardees have demonstrated dedication in their respective fields–from health care, culture & arts, hospitality and community service,” said Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce President Kit Zulueta. “We hope you can help us honor them at our awards night as it promises to be a special night for all.”

The 2016 awardees are: Zacarias G. Asuncion, a retired surgeon who now dedicates his life to volunteer medical work; Uluwehi Guerrero, Kumu Hula and multiaward winning Hawaiian music recording artist; Vincent L. Gusman, humanitarian and leader of the Maui Masonic Lodge; Rick Nava, public servant and accomplished businessman; Ronaldo Santos, Food and Beverage Manager at the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club and community supporter; and Melanie Vallejos, dentist and leader of community development projects.

The Chamber’s Gintong Pamana Committee, with help from a panel of judges, will also give a special award to one of the recipients, which will be announced that evening.

industry for using a photovoltaic system to supplement our electricity use with renewable solar energy,” says Gary Bulson, Senior Engineer at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, in a recent press release. “Hyatt Regency Maui is one of the first resorts in Hawaii to install a system of solar panels of this size, making it one of the largest rooftop PV systems in the state of Hawaii. We are currently in the process of introducing a sustainability tour around our property that will better inform and increase awareness of the different areas that we are making sustainability advancements, including: water efficiency, ocean and reef protection, minimizing food waste, recycling, solar energy, interior air quality and green cleaning.”

The Hyatt expects to produce more that six percent of their electricity through their new solar system. The Fairmont Kea Lani is currently in the final steps of their 1,258 photovoltaic system that will launch in June. The Kea Lani is predicting a 10 percent offset of their current energy demand and a reduction of 457 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The Hyatt also established a long term goal for greening the property. Housekeeping uses Ecolab cleaning products to reduce volatile organic compounds and protect staff health. The resort also retrofitted rooms with high efficiency shower heads

to save more than 30 percent in water consumption. Hyatt has championed other efforts in irrigation, food waste recycling and protecting the ocean from runoff.

Senior Engineer Gary Bulson, a veteran of green initiatives, made them a focus for his career with Hyatt that began in 1973. He says the county and mayor played important roles in getting the photovoltaic job done.

“Mayor Alan Arakawa and the County of Maui have been extremely supportive in the sustainability efforts that we have been able to accomplish here at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa,” he says. “From the participation of the Mayor himself at our LEED EBOM certification reception, to the photovoltaic system installation reception and the proclamation of Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa Malama ‘Aina Leadership Day on October 17, 2014 that recognized our efforts to increase waste diversion, energy efficiency and conservation, in addition to urging citizens to work toward keeping the island of Maui sustainable and environmentallyfriendly for generations to come.”

Bulson emphasizes the best thing a resort can do long term for the environment is educate the staff, residents and visitors alike with their efforts.

“The largest impact that the resorts can have on our local communities are the sustainability efforts that continue to have a positive impact on our environment,” says Bulson. “Educating the staff and local residents about being environmentally conscious is another way that Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa supports the efforts of the community. It’s not a matter of trend these days–instead, alternative energy and water saving devices are part of the bottom line. Capital investment is driving these decisions as much as any compelling environmental need.

The resorts have tackled carbon reductions in different and creative ways. Starwood brand has pledged participation in an environmental initiative they’re calling “30/20 by 20.”

I asked Westin Maui’s Resort Sustainability Champion Sulinn Aipa what this means.

“In 2007, Starwood began collecting environmental data on all of its properties around the world,” says Aipa. “Two years later, the data became the baseline for Starwood’s landmark environmental initiative 30/20 by 20, which calls for a 30 percent reduction in energy use and a 20 percent reduction in water consumption per built hotel room globally by 2020. Our guests are choosing hotel brands that reflect their desire to reduce the global footprint. The Westin Maui Resort and Spa has long been a champion of sustainability and we are excited to meet and exceed their expectations to ensure a successful future.”

Some of the creative programs for Westin Maui include offering guests Starwood points or dining credits for choosing to defer daily housekeeping services. Deferring services for even a single night saves nearly 40 gallons of water, plus electricity, natural gas and chemicals. The resort is also telling housekeepers that they can pocket five cents for every beverage bottle they recycle.

Duane Sparkman, the engineering and landscaping manager at Westin Maui, has streamlined water savings by using native drought resistant landscaping and predawn watering. What’s more, he started a botanical tour of these native plants.

Even the food and beverage department has jumped into the effort. Executive Sous Chef Ikaika Manuku is offering sustainable menus bolstered by locally sourced and harvested ingredients and served in biodegradable containers. Manuku’s partnerships with local farmers extends to repurposing their food waste for pig food, and recycling 200

It was a guide for going green in hotels, available for not just Fairmont, but any other hotels that had an interest. The Kea Lani has a passionate sustainability team in place ever since Fairmont took over the property. With the case of this photovoltaic project, it was looking at an initiative that was right for the environment but also provides a compelling business case, too. We wanted to make sure the solar system did not intrude on guests and our neighbors, so finding the location on the roof worked.”

In addition to the Fairmont Kea Lani’s 500-kilowatt solar installation, they’ve engaged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state Department of Land and Natural Resources to establish an Endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle Dawn Patrol volunteer program. The resort’s self-empowered sustainability team walks nearby White Rock beach every morning throughout the 2016 nesting season, reporting tracks and nests.

The eye-catching Vietnamese model and Playboy (Venezuela edition) Playmate Angie Vu complained to the New York Daily News in April that her five-plus months in jail in Brooklyn have been “torture” and “cruel” because of her lack of access to beauty care.

Vu is fighting extradition to France for taking her nine-year-old daughter in violation of the father’s custody claim and is locked up until a federal judge rules. Among her complaints: “turning pale” in the “harsh light”; lack of “Guerlain’s moisturizer”; inability to look at herself for months (because glass mirrors are prohibited); and “worrying” about being hit on by “lesbians” (thus causing “wrinkles”). At least, she told the reporter, she has found God in jail and passes time reading the Bible.

QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS Chef Mahbub Chowdhury pleaded guilty in April to food and hygiene violations in Swindon (England) Magistrates Court after inspectors found “brown fingerprints” in the kitchen at his Yeahya Flavour of Asia carry-out restaurant. Chowdhury was candid about his “cultural” habit of bypassing toilet paper and using his hand to clean himself. The plastic bottle with the fingerprints, Chowdbury said, contained water that he normally used instead of the toilet paper, and his lawyer argued that since the bottle was never actually lab-tested, the brown spots could have been “spices.”

BAD TIP$ TIPPING IN RESTAURANTS HAS AN UGLY PAST AND IS UNFAIR TO FOOD SERVERS. HERE’S WHY IT NEEDS TO END.

T

here’s no way to say this delicately, so I’m just going to come out and say it: tipping food servers is wrong.

It’s messed up, unfair and appalling.

Of course you should tip your servers if you eat out, but it’s clear the whole system is rigged against those who try to work in the restaurant industry. It needs to end. Hawaii, though known nationally as a progressive place to live

and work, is anything but when it comes to compensating restaurant workers properly.

As anyone who’s worked in the restaurant industry knows, in 43 states (including Hawaii), there are actually two minimum wages for workers. There’s the regular one, which varies nationwide but currently stands at $8.50/ hour in Hawaii, and then there’s the

minimum wage for people who work in jobs in which they might be tipped.

In Hawaii, the tipped minimum wage is $7.75/hour, but will eventually rise to 9.35/hour on Jan. 1, 2018 (by then, the standard minimum wage in Hawaii will be $10.10/hour).

This difference in wages is a problem.

is better than in some states, where it stands at a mere $2.13/hour (the federal minimum wage, which hasn’t changed in decades). That wage is so absurdly low that a worker making that actually receives a paycheck marked “THIS IS NOT A PAYCHECK” because all their income went to taxes.

“Many people assume that low wages

in the restaurant industry are concentrated in the fast-food segment of the industry,” writes Saru Jayaraman, the director of the Food Labor Research Center at UC Berkeley, in her new book Forked: A New Standard for American Dining. “Unfortunately, this is not the case. Workers in all segments of the industry, in all positions and of all racial and gender backgrounds work and live in poverty in the restaurant industry. Wages for kitchen workers are abysmal, and, unbeknownst to many, income for workers serving customers on the dining floor–workers who earn tips–is no better.”

For Hawaii, this is especially important.

According to the Hawaii Restaurant Association, slightly more than 90,000 residents work for restaurants in Hawaii–15 percent of the state’s entire labor pool (nationally, restaurant workers make up 10 percent of the labor market). What’s more, the HRA projects $4.5 billion in projected Hawaii restaurant sales this year.

Add to that a new study published by the Pew Research Center last month that showed Hawaii has the sixth highest cost of living in the United States. It’s a remarkable 23.9 percent higher than the national average (Illinois, the state with the highest cost of living, is 34.6 percent above the national average).

On top of that, in the last few years both Roy’s and Pineapple Grill got in trouble with the state Labor Department for forcing servers to share their tips with kitchen staff–a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Add to that a general lack of paid sick days, which is a public health hazard. And let’s not forget that the whole practice of tipping leads inexorably to increased sexual harassment. “Seven percent of American women work in restaurants, but 37 percent of all sexual harassment complaints to the EEOC come from the restaurant industry,” Jayaraman noted in Forked.

Clearly, unquestionably, Hawaii needs to get rid of tipped minimum wages.

There should be one minimum wage for all employees, regardless of whether they get tips.

On May 9, I spoke with Jayaraman by phone about her new book and how Hawaii is far behind some states in treating restaurant workers fairly (Disclosure: I went to high school with Jayaraman, though we didn’t know each other there.

In any case, we’ve had no contact with each other since at least 1990).

Q: So why did you write Forked?

I wrote another book called Behind A: the Kitchen Door in 2013. It was about all the things people don’t know about restaurants. I did a book tour, and there was so much demand for this information. We also put out a diners’ guide for a couple years. Oxford asked me to put that into a book. There’s a handful of folks who are doing it right– about 200 people doing it right nationally. The more we communicate our values, the more restaurant owners will take the high road. We’re seeing some of the highest-profile restaurants starting to go the high road.

If the District of Columbia, Massachusetts and New York can move in this direction, then Hawaii can.

As usual with new restaurants, his dream deli has then morphed into what Maui needs and wants. Vafaie just got their liquor license and they’re planning to have beer and wine with their dishes.

His menu is still evolving.

“We just got some eggplant, and we are going to do a the BLT with a fried eggplant instead of bacon, and have a new veggie sandwich on the menu.” says Vafaie.

“Another one of the neat things we do is a house made hot sauce. It’s really good.”

and eggs and a breakfast sandwich. There’s even buttermilk fried chicken and waffles which stays on the menu all day.

The menu reads like a meat lover’s paradise: meatloaf, BLT, Italian cold cuts, all-beef hot dogs, Reuben, pastrami and hamburger. Vafaie fixes me a few tasters to go along with my burger, and the Reuben catches me off guard. It’s so good I temporarily abandon my burger to finish this morsel of sandwich.

The Reuben is served on amazing rye and is toasted on the grill. The house-made corned beef slices all melty with cheese and is topped with just the right amount of sauerkraut. There were no adjustments needed for that sandwich or the burger, which had a really good ratio of bun to meat to fixings.

he North Shore Deli has a good thing going on. Open from 8am to 4pm daily they are making serious Seattle influenced espresso and drip coffee, breakfast and lunch options in Paia. Owner Robert Vafaie is familiar with the restaurant business, having grown up in the industry in California. He wanted a different kind of operation though, his dream was to have a casual Paia eatery inspired by the old school deli’s of his youth.

“My entire family is in the restaurant business in LA,” says Vafaie. “We lived two blocks from Billy’s in Glendale. My grandmother would take us there at least one Sunday a month. I grew up eating

in developing the open air kitchen and menu. Aluminum seats surround black square tops, and there’s a community bench with cushions along one wall. There is wifi and I saw several laptops were open.

The open kitchen has a register off to one side where they take orders and a line of high stools along a bar for customers.

“I wanted the deli here to look a little different than what you usually see around Maui,” says Vafaie. “There are enough rainbows and surfboards in designs around Maui. I wanted a space that pays homage to the classic deli. A sleeker industrial or urban look.”

One of the first things Vafaie tells me is that I have to try their coffee, especially the lattes. They have a sage latte, a cardamom one, plus a spiced mocha on the menu. They also have drip, but the

North Shore Deli Burger lattes are where it’s at. Barista Emilee Brimhall brings her Seattle java palate to the coffee menu.

“For the sage latte, we infuse sage into the syrup,” says Brimhall as she motions to a bottle of green elixir that’s going into my latte. I ask her if I can take a photo of my coffee and she sighs and rolls her eyes a bit. “No,” she says. “It isn’t pretty enough.”

Her pretty pointy pink nails get to work on another version that’s more photogenic while I ask her about the fancy flavors.

“I used to work at a cafe in Seattle,” Brimhall says. “That’s where I got my inspiration. I want to keep going, I want to make other types of syrup and new flavors of lattes. There’s a rose latte with rose water that’s good. We use Anthony’s coffee right now.”

I try the rose water latte and fall hopelessly in love with it while waiting for my burger. They also serve a lot of full breakfast items which I’m dying to try: corned beef hash, lox and bagels, omelets, bacon

which was terrific. Served on a toasty warm roll, this simple bacon, lettuce and tomato creation also had a wondrous avocado aioli that tied it all together. It came with handcut fries, pickle, and cole slaw– their simple but solid lineup of sides.

Joining the specialty coffees for your after-meal treats are a few sweets. I managed to squeeze in one of their brownies after lunch. You just can’t resist that fresh baked goodness with their great coffees.

“It’s hard to find a really good sandwich on Maui,” says Vafaie.”You can get a sandwich at a lot of places. But to have a really nice pastrami and really nice reuben was missing. We are the only spot doing matzo ball soup. Sequels and Remakes: Resurgence It’s time for our annual summer movie preview

S

ummer traditionally means we get a new crop of big-budget blockbuster action, adventure and comedy films, and this year will be no different. And yes, many of them will be sequels and remakes. But some look good. Here’s our annual summer movie preview:

THE NICE GUYS (opens May 20) The Gist: Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in a violent, 1977-set buddy comedy.

Why It Could Rock: Written/directed

by Shane Black, the gonzo genius behind the bloody, hilarious R-rated comedic thrillers Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,The Long Kiss Goodnight and The Last Boy Scout. Gosling is great in comedies and Crowe was surprisingly hilarious on his recent SNL stint.

Unless: Outside of the Lethal Weapon series he created, Black’s movies are typically cult items. The Nice Guys may be too hip and brutal for mainstream audiences.

While they’re typically full of funny oneliners, Black’s storylines mirror Raymond Chandler’s and can be hard to follow.

THE CONJURING 2 (opens June 10) The Gist: Vera Fermiga and Patrick Wilson return as real-life ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Why It Could Rock: Director James Wan is becoming a new master of horror and the original made audiences scream like banshees. With two strong leads, thick but old school PG-13 scares and a whole month before Lights Out, this could make a killing.

Unless: While reliable money makers, not everyone liked Insidious chapters 2-3. Horror movie sequels aren’t the sure thing they used to be (just ask the makers of Sinister 2). Will anything here terrify audiences as much as the Hide N’ Clap game from the original?

FINDING DORY (opens June 17) The Gist: Dory the Flounder goes looking for her family, keeps forgetting who she is.

Why It Could Rock: Finding Nemo is the most beloved Pixar film, period. Released in 2003, a generation that grew up with it will embrace this sequel.

Unless: Pixar has been going sequel crazy, though this won’t be the movie that stops the trend. When they eventually get around to making Brave 2: Even Braver, audiences may finally cry uncle.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (opens June 24) The Gist: Twenty years after aliens

blew up The White House, they return for more. Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum star. Epic cheese-meister Roland Emmerich again directs.

Why It Could Rock: Opening exactly 20 years after the original Independence Day was a masterstroke. So was getting Goldblum and Pullman to return. Seeing this on July 4 may be essential for all Americans. Even if it’s sillier than the original, good luck resisting this one.

Unless: The trailer is cool but topping the original won’t be easy. Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher are young, handsome and in no way enough to fill the void of Will Smith’s absence. ID4 was the biggest hit of 1996 and a summer movie classic but let’s be honest: it’s as corny as My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

THE SHALLOWS (opens June 29) The Gist: A surfer (Blake Lively) battles a hungry shark on an isolated cove.

Why It Could Rock: Like the surprise hit Open Water, this is a slick, minimalist and intense shark thriller.

Unless: Lively carries 90 percent of the movie by herself, which could be a problem. She’s lovely but has yet to prove herself as an actress. This badly needs her to step up and surprise everyone.

THE SECRET LIVES OF PETS (opens July 8) The Gist: Turns out that when we leave our pets behind, they raid the fridge and go on wild adventures.

Why It Could Rock: The trailer has been playing in theaters for a year and is funnier than most movies playing after it. The voice cast is a hip assortment of popular comedians (Kevin Hart and Louis C.K.!) and the concept is funny. If it’s better than Minions, parents will be most grateful.

Unless: If any movie is going to get left behind by Finding Dory, likely the summer’s top grosser, it’s this one.

GHOSTBUSTERS (opens July 15) The Gist: Who You Gonna Call?

Why It Could Rock: If it overcomes an awful trailer and toxic pre-release word of mouth, it might just work, but that’s a big if.

Much of the original Ghostbusters cast turns up in cameos. That alone will bring in diehard fans on opening weekend. Director Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids and Spy were hilarious.

Unless: Everyone involved drops the ball. Sony must be kicking themselves for turning a sure-thing into a let’s-pleaseeverybody topic of internet rage. Bill Murray anchored the originals–who’s carrying this thing? Melissa McCarthy and three SNL vets may not be enough. Looks a lot like Pixels.

Wow, that new film about McDonald's founder Ray Kroc looks awesome!

STAR TREK BEYOND (opens July 22) The Gist: The crew of the starship Enterprise takes on a new super-villain (played

by Idris Elba).

Why It Could Rock: The cast has great chemistry, the franchise is thoughtful and sunny. Elba is a slam dunk as the bad guy.

Unless: This matches the mixed-tocontemptuous response to Star Trek Into Darkness. With Khan gone and Spock reborn, are there any classic Trek movie tropes left to reconfigure? Will a new director and a lack of J.J. Abrams at the helm hurt it?

LIGHTS OUT (opens August 22) The Gist: Turn your lights off, a monster comes…

Why It Could Rock: The three and a half minute, 2013 short film this is based on will petrify you (don’t believe me? Look it up. I’ll wait). The director expanded his original short film and the concept is genuinely scary.

Unless: Audiences get enough boo out of The Conjuring 2.

JASON BOURNE (opens July 29) The Gist: Following a trilogy, a reboot and several rip-offs, Matt Damon returns as Jason Bourne.

Why It Could Rock: Damon and MVP Director Paul Greengrass are back. Throw in the Moby song over the end credits and you have yourself a hit. Everybody now! “Oh Baby! Oh Baby! Then It Fell Apart! It Fell Apart! (repeat 40 times).”

Seriously, is there a better action movie opening this summer?

Unless: Will the ludicrous pharmaceutical company subplot from the otherwise underrated but Damon-less The Bourne Legacy play a part in this one? Is Bourne still as impressive as Ethan Hunt?

Or are they just making these movies to give Julia Stiles work?

THE FOUNDER (opens August 5) The Gist: Michael Keaton stars as Ray Croc, the man who helped create the

worldwide phenomenon known as McDonald’s.

Why It Could Rock: Keaton is the whole show here. He got passed up for Birdman but his tour de force as Croc might finally lead to an Oscar. Controversy via criticizing the world’s most popular fast food chain could make this the most discussed film of the summer.

Unless: Does anyone care about the origin of the Big Mac? Will critics be singing “Ba-da-bah-ba-bah, I’m Lovin’ It”? Will middle America turn against a movie that’s critical of the Golden Arches? The words “From the director of The Blind Side” do not instill confidence.

SUICIDE SQUAD (opens August 5) The Gist: A cluster of DC Comics villains join forces and blow stuff up. From the director of Fury.

Why It Could Rock: Jared Leto’s take on The Joker is a must-see. Apparently, Batman pops up in this one, too. Also noteworthy–Margot Robie’s take on Harley Quinn is the beloved character’s cinematic debut.

Unless: It matches Batman v Superman–Dawn of Justice in desperately courting fanboy dollars. Outside of Leto’s involvement, this looks as good as Batman & Robin. Writer/director David Ayer does nihilism well but his movies are no fun. The new TMNT actually looks better.

PETE’S DRAGON (opens August 12) The Gist: A Disney remake of an oldie but goodie.

Why It Could Rock: The cast is stronger than expected. Jurassic World survivor Bryce Dallas Howard is no surprise but Robert Redford is in this!

The dragon looks more Maurice Sendak than The Good Dinosaur. Looks like Harry and the Henderson with a $300 million budget.

Unless: It lands with a thud as loudly as John Carter or The Lone Ranger. The original is well remembered but kinda lame.

This is your kind of week, because the best thing you can do is be whimsical. If something tells you to take a different route home, or pop into a café, or do anything out of the ordinary, heed it whenever you can. But the very nature of your life often means you have to rely on conscious thought over gut feeling. Not so this week. Give your intuition free reign; even your pouting, ignored brain will be glad you did.

Roll with punches, or, if you can, redirect them towards other folk who are also causing you trouble.
