Cove Park: Where the magic happens

MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL HOSTED WORKSHOP ON KIHEI WATER QUALITY On May 2, the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC) put on an all-day workshop on Kihei water quality over at the Humpback Whale Sanctuary. According to organizers, the workshop was a follow-up to our Mar. 16 story “Poop! (There It Is)” on new research into whether effluent from the County of Maui’s water treatment facility in South Maui is migrating to popular beaches like Kalama and Cove Park, where it could be seriously harming coral.

“The purpose of the workshop is: To consider new information regarding water quality in South Maui, to understand impacts of degraded water quality to coral reefs, to consider solutions, and develop recommendations,” said Amy Hodges, the MNMRC’s Programs and Operations Coordinator, in an Apr. 30 email. “Mailea Miller-Pierce [the researcher I interviewed in the MauiTime story] and Neil Rhoads, the authors of the scientific paper which brought to light the poor quality of Kihei’s water be presenting among other experts. There will then be a panel discussion and small group brainstorming session to develop a set of recommendations to improve our water.”

In total, five researchers spoke at the workshop on a variety of topics, including “The Influence of Wastewater Discharge on Water Quality in Hawaii: A Comparative Study of Lahaina and Kihei,” “Temporal Analysis of Hawai`i DOH [Department of Health] Water Quality Data” and “The Impact of Wastewater on Coral Reef Inhabitants and Ecosystems.”

The latter, by Kalaupapa National Historic Park marine ecologist Dr. Eric Brown, seemed especially timely. “As human population increases on islands with highly visible limitations on the ecosystem, it is important to understand factors such

as wastewater that can alter the ecosystem,” stated the workshop program on Brown’s talk. “Over the past 20 years numerous studies have examined the impact of human wastewater in coral reef ecosystems and identified several key stressors that negatively influence coral reef organisms when present in excess quantities. These stressors include freshwater, dissolved inorganic nutrients, endocrine disrupters, pathogens, solids, heavy metals, and toxins.”

The day after the conference, Hodges sent a follow-up email stating that about 30 people attended (with another five people watching online), representing various organizations like the state Division of Aquatic Resources, the Department of Health, various homeowners associations, the Kihei Community Association, Maui Tomorrow, the Nature Conservancy, the National Park Service, the University of Hawaii and the County of Maui’s Wastewater division. She also said the attendees agreed to numerous recommendations, of which these were the top four: 1. Conduct a feasibility study of best practices from around the world for treatment and use of wastewater, with associated costs. Determine the best fit for Maui and then make recommendations to the County of Maui.

Officials with the state of Hawaii Department of Health announced that Maui Wellness Group and Pono Life Sciences Maui are their choices to run medical marijuana dispensaries in Maui County, Health Department Director Virginia Pressler announced on Apr. 29 at a news conference (which I got to watch live thanks to a livestream from Honolulu Civil Beat).

Records with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) show that Maui Wellness Group is based in Wailuku and run by Maui Wellness Management, which is run

by Gregory Park, MD and David C. Cole (who used to run the Maui Land & Pineapple Company). Pono Life Sciences Maui only has a Honolulu address and is run by William Mitchell and Robert Wong.

Companies that included various celebrities (Maui Medical Marijuana Dispensary LLC, Shep Gordon and Simple Organic Living LLC, Woody Harrelson) or public officials (Hawaii Medicinal Options, Sen. J. Kalani English) didn’t make the cut. Nor did Grateful Meds, LLC, which is run by longtime marijuana eradicator Donald Shearer of Maui-based Windward Aviation (who we profiled in our Mar. 10, 2016 cover story).

Keep in mind these are merely the state’s selections–the state will issue dispensary licenses after the selected companies send in their $75,000 application fees. Patients should be able to buy from dispensaries this summer, health officials announced.

“We are hopeful that some dispensaries selling various forms of medical cannabis will open as early as mid-July, and we are pleased that the maximum number licenses allowed by statute were granted, including one to a group on Kauai,” stated an Apr. 29 news release from the Drug Policy Forum of Hawaii, a nonprofit founded in 1993 that advocates for more sensible, humane drug laws. “The long-suffering medical cannabis patients have waited since 2000, when medical cannabis was legalized by the legislature, to have the option of buying safe and tested medicine. Currently, there are some 13,000 patients across the state, but with dispensaries soon to ease access to medicine that number is expected to grow exponentially.”

STATE STILL WON’T GIVE JOURNALISTS ACCESS TO NATURAL DISASTER It’s crunch time over at the state Legislature, and it looks like the long journey of House Bill 1344 is at an end. First introduced by Rep. Gregg Takayama, D–Pearl City, back in early 2015, the bill would have allowed “journalists and newscasters, under the supervision of emergency management agency personnel, to cover the mitigation of hazardous situations and access areas that are closed pursuant to emergency management powers of the governor and mayor.”

Though stuck in the legislative process for over a year, the bill made it all the way to conference this year. Things seemed to be ok–Brigadier General Arthur J. Logan, the Adjutant General and state Emergency Management Agency director, even testified that the bill was fine by him (after some relatively minor adjustments).

But on May 2, Honolulu Civil Beat reported that disaster struck.

“House Rep. Gregg Takayama thought he had a deal with his Senate counterpart on a news media access bill late last week,” reported Civil Beat’s Chad Blair. “But Takayama’s conference committee counterpart, Sen. Clarence Nishihara, [D– Waipahu] told him Friday [Apr. 30] that the bill would be deferred–that is, killed.”

Blair reported that “Nishihara said that there were concerns from Civil Defense about whether journalists would be at risk under the bill’s provisions.” Given that Logan had seemingly addressed all that his testimony before the Senate Ways and Means Committee back on Apr. 9, 2015, it’s hard to say what really went wrong. DUNKIN’ DONUTS COMING SOON Yeah, donut lovers, it’s true: next year Dunkin’ Donuts will start opening shops throughout Hawaii, including right here on Maui, the company announced today. Starting in 2017, the company plans to open 15 stores in Hawaii through an agreement with the franchise group Aloha Petroleum Ltd., Dunkin’ Donuts officials announced today.

“Our enthusiastic and dedicated franchisees contribute to our brand’s growth, which has helped solidify our position as one of the fastest growing brands by unit count in the quick-service restaurant industry,” said Grant Benson, CFE, vice president of global franchising and business development, Dunkin’ Brands, in a May 2 company news release.

“We are thrilled that Aloha Petroleum will be developing the brand throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and are also pleased to announce that even more of America will be Running on Dunkin’ since this agreement marks our upcoming entry into our 42nd state.”

Based in Canton, Massachusetts, Dunkin’ Donuts first opened in 1940.

The company operates more than 11,000 shops in 43 nations. The company had previously operated in Hawaii, but that franchisee closed years ago, according to the May 2 Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The Historic Hawaii Foundation will honor exemplary achievements in the field of historic preservation at a May 27 ceremony and celebration at the Pomaika‘i Ballrooms in Honolulu. The special event includes dinner, presentation of the Honor Awards and silent auction of Hawaiiana art and memorabilia.

The annual Preservation Honor Awards offer the local community an opportunity to share, recognize and applaud excellence in historic preservation in the Hawaiian Islands. Presented annually since 1975, the awards bring together architects, contractors, planners, developers, historians, archaeologists, landowners and others who contribute to preservation projects.

The awards ceremony will also include the presentation of the eighth annual Frank Haines Award to educators Jane Kurahara and Betsy Young.

Kurahara and Young are volunteers with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, working on the effort to identify, document, evaluate and plan for the preservation of the World War II-era confinement camp site in Oahu. Their efforts reached fruition in February 2015 when President Barack Obama designated the Honouliuli National Monument, ensuring its future preservation.

The Haines Award was established in 2009 and named for master architect Frank Haines, FAIA. It’s presented to individuals who have demonstrated sustained and outstanding achievements in the areas of preserving the significant historic and cultural places of Hawaii.

The Haines Award headlined the annual ceremony, which also included Preservation Honor Awards in three categories: Preservation Award for specific projects that preserved, rehabilitated, or restored a

historic property; Preservation Commendation for individuals, organizations or government agencies that engaged in advocacy, educational, programmatic or other activity supporting preservation efforts, either for a specific historic property or through a broad-based program; and Achievements in Interpretive Media for a printed publication or visual presentation that interpreted the history, preservation or physical characteristics of a historic property.

Maui is represented in the Preservation Award Category, which went to Agawa Home Rehabilitation (Lahaina). The home, located within Lahaina’s National Historic Landmark District, was the residence of one of the first Japanese lunas (supervisors) at the Pioneer Mill. It was rehabilitated and will ultimately provide a location for Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s Plantation Era Education Center. Honorees are Lahaina Restoration Foundation; Lincoln Construction and Garden View, Inc. Hana and Lanai are honored in the Preservation Commendation Category for the “E ‘Ike Hou Ia Lanai” Education Program and the Hana Belt Road Historic District State Bridges Preservation Plan.

Lanai Guide-GPS Web-Enabled Application for Storied Places of Lanai is honored in the Interpretive Media Category. Also honored in the category is Molokai’s The Pride of a Nation video, a five-minute introduction to the history of Kalaupapa that focuses on the people who were sent there because of a diagnosis of leprosy or as family members to patients.

Anniversary Recognitions, in celebration of the rich history of the kama‘aina companies, organizations and institutions that are an important and integral part of the singular culture of the Hawaiian Islands, will also be presented.

An Anniversary Recognition is going to Hawaiian Electric (125 years) and Ka‘ono‘ulu Ranch (100 years).

Xerox Maui recently showed its support of the Maui Food Bank by providing funds and labor to build new shelving units for the local nonprofit. Close to a dozen Xerox Maui employees and their family members gave up a recent Saturday afternoon to build the much needed shelves. Xerox Maui also donated $2,000 to purchase materials for the shelves.

“These shelves serve an important role in our operations,” said Richard Yust, executive director for the Maui Food Bank. “The shelves are stocked with food and are used daily by our 120-plus partner agencies who come to the Maui Food Bank to obtain donated food for their programs. Our current shelves were over ten years old, literally falling apart, and desperately needed to be replaced.”

In addition to constructing 36 shelving units, Xerox Maui volunteers also attached new wheels to each unit. “Our new shelves can now be wheeled into the warehouse for stocking, then back into the front area for easy access by our partner agencies,” said Yust. “This provides us with a more efficient and time saving method for replenishing our shelves, which is done on a daily basis.”

Once the shelving units were constructed, Xerox Maui employees worked together to stock the shelves with donated food. “It goes without saying that we (Maui Food Bank) can’t do what we do without the help from businesses like Xerox,” said Yust.

Xerox Maui’s support of the Maui Food Bank is part of the company’s nation-

wide Xerox Community Involvement Program (XCIP), which is an employeedriven and corporate-supported community giving program. The XCIP program provides Xerox divisions throughout the country with an annual budget to implement community-based projects. In Hawaii, Xerox funds projects that benefit those in need, with the stipulation that all donations must be accompanied by employee volunteer man hours.

In March, one District of Columbia government administrative law judge was charged with misdemeanor assault on another. Judge Sharon Goodie said she wanted to give Judge Joan Davenport some files, but Davenport, in her office, would not answer the door. Goodie said once the door finally opened, an enraged Davenport allegedly “lunged” at her, “aiming” her thrust at Goodie’s neck.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Tennessee state Rep. Jeremy Durham has such a reputation as a “dog” around women working at the capitol that the House Speaker issued a directive in April relocating Durham’s office to a less-populated building across the street. Further, Durham is allowed access only to certain legislative meetings and to certain staff (i.e., no free-ranging among female staff members). After interviewing 34 people, the state attorney general said he believed that Rep. Durham’s unwanted sexual approaches and commentaries were impeding legislative business.

As The Wall Street Journal reported in April, entrepreneurial dog owners have rushed to create popular Instagram accounts and Facebook posts (and now, even to put their photogenic pups on a livestreaming app called Waggle) to catch agents’ eyes (and, they hope, lead to four- and fivefigure paydays from such advertisers as Nikon, PetSmart, Residence Inn and Heinz).

THE JOB OF THE RESEARCHER Researchers already knew that masked birch caterpillars “rub hairs on their rear ends against a leaf to create vibrations,” according to an April National Geographic report, but a forthcoming article by Carleton University biologists describes that “drumming” as actually part of their “sophisticated signaling repertoire” to attract others–not for mating but for assistance in spinning their protective silk cocoons. The researchers’ “laser vibrometer” detects sound likely inaudible to humans, but when the caterpillars feed, it’s clearly, said one researcher, “Chomp, chomp, chomp, anal scrape.

POLICE REPORT According to surveillance video, a man broke into a Five Guys restaurant in Washington, D.C., in the middle of the night on March 18, cooked himself a cheeseburger and fled. And Ellis Battista, 24, was arrested for the February break-in at Bradley’s convenience store in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in which he took only a pack of cigarettes– for which he left $6 on the counter. (However, he also damaged the door getting in.)

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS A 69-year-old man was killed on March 17 while awaiting emergency care at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. He had been seriously injured in an earlier accident and was in the waiting room when a 59-yearold driver’s car crashed through the hospital doors and fatally struck him. And a 55-year-old man was killed in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 23 when a 15-foot trailer came loose and crashed into him on a sidewalk. The deceased, who had a lengthy criminal record for sexual assault, might have avoided the trailer if he had not been distracted by watching pornography on his phone as he walked.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Amanda Schweickert, 28, was charged with a felony and three driving offenses in March in Springville, New York, when deputies noticed that her rear license plate was just a piece of cardboard painted to sort of resemble a New York plate (but more likely suggesting the work of an elementary school art class).

New York also requires a front plate, but Schweickert had not gotten around to that yet. ■

More Kitten, Less Fake Gangsters Key & Peele’s ‘Keanu’ could be a lot funnier ★★★★★ Rated R / 100 Min.

T

he first film collaboration with Jordan Peele and Keegan MichaelKey, hot off their acclaimed Key & Peele sketch comedy series, is about a kitten. Specifically, a ridiculously adorable stray that enters the life of Rell (Peele) at his lowest point and immediately rejuvenates his life. Naturally, Rell names the kitten “Keanu.” Rell’s best friend, Clarence (Key), is overjoyed to see his stoner buddy finally asserting himself and finding joy and motivation. But when Keanu suddenly disappears, Rell and Clarence go on a dark quest to find him. They eventually discover that Keanu’s new owner has adorned the kitten in a do-rag and gold chains.

Directed by Peter Atencio, it begins so brilliantly, with a nutty, skillfully directed action sequence, it seemed like “Keanu” really would live up to being from “the visionary minds of Key & Peele.” Unfortunately, the film becomes overly committed to its gangsta drama.

The brilliance of Key and Peele’s TV series is that they would take an outrageous concept and push the joke as far as it could possibly go. I’m thinking of their deranged and hilarious “Little Homie” sketch. Keanu begins in high gear, mellows out for too long and only at the very end does the movie inch towards total comic lunacy. You keep waiting for them to leap past the gangbanger clichés and enough-already jokes about George Michael and take everything an absurd step further. Instead, the screenplay sticks to its story of rival gang members and can only do so much with it.

At best, it comes closer to being a good Fakerz N The Hood comedy than the likes of Get Hard, Bringing Down the House and Malibu’s Most Wanted.

Initially, it seems like the film has something to say about identifying yourself in African-American culture and adopting a rapper lifestyle as a means of expressing repressed anger. It also wants to tap into the universal fact that just about everyone on the planet can’t resist the charms of an adorable kitten. The subtext and the

promise of a great movie go slack by the second hour, when things get both overly predictable and too complicated. Having Luis Guzman show up late as a rival criminal should feel like a comic shot in the arm, not additional baggage.

The movie needed more Keanu, whose presence is such a funny contrast to all the violence and dark humor. Near the end, there’s a money shot of Keanu defending his master and leaping through the air. It’s one of the most priceless in the film. So is the way the movie eventually addresses the kitten’s famous namesake. Yet, the screenplay paints itself into a corner and doesn’t go as over the top as it should. The introduction of the Allentown Brothers, for example, is so good that the movie should have stuck with them.

Key and Peele, as always, have great

chemistry and make a potent comic duo.

They’re so good and likable, they will likely overcome this wobbly first feature.

Oddly, right after I saw Keanu, I visited a friend who was watching the final season of their TV series. We watched an “Undercover Boss” sketch that had us howling for four minutes. In comparison, the hilarity in Keanu isn’t consistent or sustained for its 100-minute running time.

For better or worse, the best thing this movie has is a kitten in a do-rag. That’s acceptable, especially in a movie year that gave us Fifty Shades of Black. Yet, a single four-minute sketch is still better at showcasing how funny Key and Peele can be over a motion picture. I hope their next movie is really something else. My two cents: write a stronger movie next time, but bring back the kitten. ■
