credible analysis of alternative utility ownership models or market structures must recognize that such efforts are complex, time consuming and costly and may in fact increase rates for electric customers with no guarantees of improvements in reliability or integration of renewable energy,” stated the company, according to a Jan. 15 Maui Now story. And if the county is thinking about using eminent domain powers to take over MECO’s dispatch and control equipment (Senator Gil Keith-Agaran, D–Wailuku, Waihe‘e, Kahului, says he’ll introduce legislation to clarify the powers Hawaii’s counties hold in terms of condemning public utility property), the utility did some serious finger-wagging.

“We haven’t reviewed the proposed legislation regarding eminent domain so we cannot yet comment on the specific proposal, but any effort by the County to acquire Maui Electric through eminent domain or taking the assets of an electric utility would not be simple or fast–or

And now on to an issue near and dear to all of our hearts–power utility operation!

Most of Maui Electric Company’s (MECO’s) 70,000 or so customers probably don’t give the utility much thought (except maybe when the bill arrives), but the County of Maui itself is very interested in the matter right now. So much so that it spent $70,000 commissioning the Oklahoma City-based engineering firm Guernsey to do a report on alternative public power ownership models.

That report dropped on Friday, Jan. 15, and says the county should indeed get an Independent Systems Operator (ISO) or Regional Transmission Operator (RTO) to “oversee the county’s electric grid and energy market,” according to a county news release.

“There’s always a bottom line for a private utility,” Mayor Alan Arakawa said in the county’s press release. “Their decisions are influenced by making a profit, whereas an ISO’s only duty is being fair to the consumers and making sure our electrical grid is reliable and efficient, as well as renewable friendly. This community is more than ready for an electrical utility model where they–the ratepayer–is the bottom line.”

There is truth in what Arakawa–unlike a co-op, a public utility like MECO (whose parent company Hawaiian Electric Industries is preparing to merge with Florida-based NextEra Energy) is typically oriented towards shareholder interests above all else. And the 241-page report, dated Dec. 23, 2015, makes this explicitly clear, especially when discussing Guernsey’s (and the county’s) view that MECO just doesn’t have what it takes to fulfill the state requirement that all of our energy come from renewable sources by 2045.

“The vision presented by the [Hawaii Public Utilities Commission] PUC, and reinforced by both the Governor of Hawaii and Mayor of Maui County, is of a differ-

ent kind of grid wherein there are a greater number of points of generation, including residential and commercial customers,” states the report. “In this model the utility service [MECO] is an enabler of self-generation; the present Investor-Owned-Utility (IOU) structure is contrary to the new vision. An IOU is responsible to its shareholders, not the ratepayers, and uses a costof-service model where profits are provided through return on capital investment.”

To be sure, the report doesn’t recommend that the county completely take over everything MECO owns and does–only that it create an ISO or RTO that would “oversee the electric grid and energy market while ensuring a reliable power supply, adequate transmission infrastructure, competitive wholesale prices and fair access for renewable power.” Such an entity would then “need to acquire existing dispatch, monitoring and control equipment in order to manage the transmission/distribution system,” while power generators and distribution lines would stay with MECO. This could be pricey–“from a low of $525 million (book value) to a high of $867 million,” the report states. The report notes that such a system would be better committed to providing more renewable

energy and “on average, cooperatives and public power utilities have lower retail rates than investor-owned utilities.”

One thing to keep in mind here is that right now, the County of Maui and MECO aren’t really getting along. This is largely due to MECO’s unwillingness to go along with the county’s big waste-to-energy proposal.

“One of the driving factors behind the exploration of alternatives to MECO is the resistance to two proposed base-load renewable energy projects developed by Anaergia Services LLC (Anaergia),” states the Guernsey report. “The situation has deteriorated over the past year such that Anaergia filed a complaint on September 9th, 2015 with the PUC stating that MECO was not complying with PUC direction to enable renewable projects. Anaergia also alleged MECO refused and failed to forward requests for preferential rates for the purchase of firm renewable energy produced from agricultural crops to the PUC for approval, as required by law.

Which is part of the reason why MECO apparently wasn’t at all pleased with the Guernsey report’s recommendation. “Any

That’s MECO for you. Others, like Sierra Club Hawaii Director Marti Townsend, found much to love in the Guernsey Report.

“We agree with the conclusions of Maui County’s study, that the people of Maui should seek a new electric utility model, which may include pursuing public ownership of the utility,” she said in a Jan. 15 Sierra Club Hawaii press release. “Here on the clean energy leading edge in Hawai`i, large investor-owned utilities are dinosaurs. It makes more sense for our environment and our economy to manage our electrical grid as a shared resource and encourage as much competition as possible to give ratepayers what they want: clean, cheap energy.”

could be obtained per year which could be used as animal forage. A subtropical seed hemp cultivar also grew well. Evidence suggested that 2 crops a year could be harvested and yields of about 2.5 tons of seed could be obtained per acre per year.”

The study also explored hemp-based building materials (“hempcrete”) and cattle forage, as well as using hemp seeds themselves as food. “At one point Canada grew 40,000 acres of hemp per year,” states the report. “All but 10,000 acres went into other crops but the remaining hemp acreage was for seed hemp. They market packets of hemp seeds which people sprinkle on their cereal during breakfast, their salads, or make into cookies. The value of seed hemp is potentially very high. The 2.5 tons/year translates to 88,000 ounces/year. If there are 2 ounces of hemp seeds per candy bar this means each acre of hemp could support 44,000 candy bars a year.”

Keep in mind though that this was all just a simple university research project– the federal government still takes a dim view of hemp.

“Seed importation was a challenge,” the report notes. “The main reason is that industrial hemp is classified by the DEA as a Schedule 1 narcotic.”

Unless and until the federal government loosens its collective collar on hemp, it will remain a subject of research projects, rather than a major crop grown on Maui.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center is welcoming Kahulu Maluo as its new Cultural Programs Director. Maluo replaces Hokulani Holt, who has joined the University of Hawaii Maui College as its Hawai‘i Papa o ke Ao Program Cultural Director.

“As the MACC moves forward, we’re in very good hands with Kahulu taking the reins of our cultural program,” said MACC President and CEO Art Vento. “Hoku’s contributions and dedication to the MACC are deeply valued.”

The MACC established a cultural programs initiative, called Liliko Ka Pua, in 2001; the program resulted in the creation of the position of Cultural Programs Director. The goals of the initiative were to expand and enrich the nature of MACC’s Hawaiian programming and provide Maui’s diverse cultural communities with greater access to the Center’s programs, according to the MACC. The initiative also stimulates the MACC’s daily operations to reflect values and heightened sensitivity to cultural issues and to internalize the Center’s respect for and connection with Hawaiian culture.

Maluo, the respected kumu hula of Halau Kamaluokaleihulu, has been serving as MACC Programs Manager, which includes facilitating the center’s Artists in the Community program. This program takes touring season artists into the communities of Hana, Molokai, Lanai and Central

Maui to share their talents and skills.

She’s also served on Maui County’s Cultural Resource Commission. Maluo joined the MACC as campaign assistant in 2003 during its second phase of construction.

A student of hula since she was three, Maluo studied with esteemed Maui Kumu Hula such as Emma Farden Sharpe, Hokulani Holt and Hawaii Island’s Rae Fonseca. In June 2004, she completed her traditional ‘uniki ceremony under Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt, along with Rae Fonseca on the Pa at the MACC. Maluo and her sister, Napua Greig, co-founded Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka in 1996. She established Halau Kamaluokaleihulu in 2013.

A lifetime Maui resident, Maluo graduated from Maui High School and attended attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo; she completed her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration at Regis University in Colorado.

“Coupled with direct severance and training assistance, this could save hundreds of plantation jobs on Maui.”

A recent report filed with the state Legislature also states that hemp might pan out after all as a major crop in Hawaii. Two years ago, the Legislature passed Act 56, which set up an industrial hemp research project (to the tune of $78,860). In December 2015, the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources filed a 10-page report with the Legislature that outlined the results of the research project. In short, industrial hemp might just work in Hawaii.

Because of the Drug War, it’s been illegal to grow industrial hemp in the U.S. for a few decades now. And even though a 2014 federal farm bill allowed universities to carry out limited industrial hemp research projects, it took 11 months for UH to get the OK from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Obviously the politics of hemp growing still need work, but as far as the science is concerned, UH’s feasibility study was pretty positive. “[I]n the current 2015 trials, subtropical fiber hemp grew very well,” states the UH report. “Evidence has been gathered suggesting that 3 crops a year could be grown in our State. Evidence indicated that this would yield between 27-38 tons dry weight of stalks per year depending on densities planted. Similarly, between 31 and 35 tons dry weight of stems and leaves

They are simply “’spas’ designed to attract teenagers,” according to one university official–plush, state-of-the-art “training” complexes built by universities in the richest athletic conferences to entice elite 17-year-old athletes to come play for (and, perhaps, study at?) their schools.

The athletes-only mini-campuses include private housing and entertainment (theaters, laser tag, miniature golf)–but, actually, the schools are in a $772-million-plus “arms’ race” (according to a December Washington Post investigation) because soon after one school’s sumptuous, groundbreaking facility opens, some other school’s more-innovative facility renders it basically second-rate.

And of course, as one university official put it, the “shiny objects” have “nothing whatsoever to do with the mission of a university.” (Donors and alumni provide much of the funding, but most schools by now also tap students’ “athletic fees.”)

Police in Monticello, Kentucky, charged Rodney Brown, 25, with stealing farm animals and equipment from a home in December–but offering to return everything if the victim (a man) had sex with him. Brown allegedly took 25 roosters, a goat and some rooster pens and other rooster-care equipment. (Because Brown also supposedly said he’d beat the man up if he called police, a “terroristic threatening” count was added to “promoting prostitution.”)

MADE IN HEAVEN William Cornelius, 25, and his fiancee, Sheri Moore, 20, were arrested at the Bay City (Michigan) Mall in January, charged with theft. Police found a pair of earrings and a necklace swiped from Spencer Gifts on her, but she refused to “snitch” on Cornelius, who had minutes earlier proposed to her via a Wal-mart loudspeaker and given her a ring, to applause from onlooking shoppers as she accepted. Cornelius, holding $80.93 worth of goods (a watch, an edible thong, a vibrator and “BJ Blast” oral-sex candy), was apprehended at the mall food court, having apparently (according to the police report) “fallen asleep at a table while tying his shoe.”

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES A geography class at Riverheads High School in Augusta County, Virginia, alarmed some parents in December when students were assigned to copy an Arabic script to experience its “artistic complexity.” However, the phrase the teacher presented for copying was the “shahada” (“There is no god but Allah”). WAIT WHAT? NPR’s “Morning Edition,” reporting on the violent tornadoes that hit North Texas on the night after Christmas, interviewed one woman who said she was luckier than her neighbors because of her faith. She was entertaining 10 relatives when she heard the “train-like” sound of the winds approaching and took everyone outside to confront the storm: “We... started commanding the winds because God had given us authority over .. airways. And we just began to command this storm not to hit our area. We spoke to the storm and said, go to unpopulated places. It did exactly what we said to do because God gave us the authority to do that.”

WEIRD SCIENCE The most promising current concussionprevention research comes from a study of woodpeckers (according to a December Business Week report). Scientists hypothesize that the birds’ apparent immunity from the dangers of constant head-slamming is because their neck veins naturally compress, forcing more blood into their craniums, thus limiting the dangerous “jiggle room” in which brains bang against the skull. A team led by a real-life doctor portrayed in the movie “Concussion” is working on a neck collar to slightly pinch the human jugular vein to create a similar effect.

ono is alive! My husband and I, who live full time on the Westside, were relaxing at Airport Beach last week. The next morning, a police officer came walking up our driveway towards my husband. The officer asked him his name, and then if he was missing any electronic devices. We didn’t know, but he then asked if owned a Kindle. Turns out that an honest couple found my husband’s Kindle on the grass and turned it in to the police department. The officer took the time to look through the device for a name, looked it up on computer to find his driver’s license and address, then hand delivered it to our home. He said that it was the nice part of his job. Big Mahalo to the nice officer and to couple who found it. If only there were more people like them. ■

HAWAII’S WOUNDED KNEE

REMEMBERING THE OLOWALU MASSACRE

K

alolopahu. It’s a Hawaiian word meaning “the spilled brains.”

Until I began researching the history of Olowalu, I had never heard the word.

Olowalu, a tiny coastal town just a few miles south of Lahaina (pop. 80), has been in the news a lot lately because of the grand development plans from Olowalu Town LLC (a hui owned by Peter Martin, Jim Riley, David Ward, Glenn and Alice Tremble and a few smaller investors).

The project seeking to build 1,500 homes (which would raise Olowalu’s population

to around 4,000) is both enormously controversial and currently on hold, given the state Land Use Commission’s recent rejection of the project Environmental Impact Statement.

But missing from much of the island’s talk of the future of Olowalu is the fact that a few centuries ago, Olowalu was a big Hawaiian village. Many people lived there. And almost exactly 226 years ago, an American named Simon Metcalfe who was in command of the small fur trading brig Eleanora ordered the brutal murder of more than a hundred Hawaiians there–what survivors came to call Kalolopahu. Contemporary historians refer to it simply as the Olowalu Mas-

sacre, but Clifford Naeole, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s Cultural Adviser, thinks of it in even stronger terms: as Hawaii’s Wounded Knee.

Naeole is, of course, referring to the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry Regiment’s notorious killing of more than 200 men, women and children of the Lakota Sioux tribe in South Dakota on Dec. 29, 1890.

Though nearly as bloody as Wounded Knee–and certainly every bit as horrific–the Olowalu Massacre is largely unknown, even in Hawaii. “[The term ‘Hawaii’s Wounded Knee’] came to me after 24 years of driving back and forth from Wailuku to Lahaina, sometimes seven days a week,” Naeole

told me. “You tend to think about things when you’re driving. I knew that something there was wrong. There’s an energy there that’s never been cleared, never been released. I was thinking about it a lot more with the talk of development.”

According to the historian Ralph Simpson Kuykendall, what we know of the Olowalu Massacre comes from three primary sources, the most detailed of which is an anonymous account from an officer about the ship, published anonymously in Gentleman’s Magazine in London in April 1791–roughly a year after the events had taken place.

Since then it’s been reprinted a number of times, most recently in the Sept. 3, 1928 Honolulu Advertiser (which is where I found it), and it provides much of this history that follows.

By the time the Eleanora reached Maui, Hawaii had been in contact with the western world for just a dozen years.

Kamehameha was pretty much in control over the Big Island by then, but he hadn’t yet successfully conquered Maui or any other island. Guns, and metal of any kind, were great prizes.

What we call the Olowalu Massacre was actually a series of bloody events that started many miles down the coast from Olowalu. On Jan. 30, 1790, says the officer’s account, Metcalfe’s ship (which is sometimes also referred to as the Eleanor or the Snow Elinora ), anchored in South Maui. There the crew traded with local Hawaiians for hogs, fruits and fish, but Metcalfe didn’t like the area so they sailed two miles further up the coast, coming to rest in a bay near the old Hawaiian village of Honua‘ula at about 4pm.

The incident that started all the trouble took place that night, around midnight. “Some of the natives swam off, and cut away the cutter from astern,” the Eleanora’s officer recalled. An hour later, the crew discovered the cutter–one of the brig’s small boats–was missing.

Metcalfe “immediately called all hands after on the quarterdeck.”

Everyone was present save for one–the cutter’s keeper, who’d been asleep in the cutter when it vanished. The crew hoisted a small boat to search, but it leaked so much they had to call off the search.

Though they didn’t know it at the time, the boat was already broken up for its metal and the boat keeper–who had been sleeping in the boat at the time of the theft–was already dead. The boat thieves had killed him after he drew a knife on them.

The Eleanora officer recorded that the Hawaiians “cut his head off, and took him on shore, and, the next night, burned him, for a sacrifice to their gods,” but the Hawaiian historian Kamakau disputes that, saying the boat keeper’s body was thrown into the sea after he was killed.

In any case, the crew saw no canoes at dawn, which the Eleanora officer wrote “confirmed our suspicions that they had cut the boat adrift.” But that afternoon, two or three Hawaiian canoes showed up, their paddlers bearing hogs and fruits–“presents from the chief.”

Apparently still highly suspicious, Metcalfe refused the food offerings.

Things went bad very quickly. “The last [canoe] that came we ordered immediately away, but they payed [sic] little attention to it, until we fired, by order of the captain, five or six musket shots at them, which killed or wounded three or four,” the officer wrote.

The Hawaiian historian S.M. Kamakau’s Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii – which drew on the only known firsthand Hawaiian account of the massacre– Ka Mooolelo Hawaii –says that among the dead from this first attack was a “peddler from Wailuku named Ke-aloha, who had come to Honua‘ula to peddle his wares.”

That night, a Hawaiian man with a knife swam to the ship. He swam under the hull, then tried to pry loose a piece of copper from ship’s bottom.

Metcalfe, fearing that the man could pull the copper loose and seriously damage the ship, “fired a pistol at him from the cabin window, but missed him.” Three or four crewmembers then went after the man in a small boat and caught him.

Enraged, Metcalfe prepared his ship for an execution. “Capt. Metcalfe fully determined to hang him, ordered a rope to be rove at the fore yard-arm, and the rope greased, but by the persuasion of Mr. Charles [another officer], and myself, he concluded to save his life, and keep him prisoner,” stated the Eleanora ’s officer in his 1791 account.

They may have stayed Metcalfe’s hand, but the next day brought more bloodshed. According to the officer’s account, “four or five thousand people” showed up, “all armed with spears, slings, and arrows.” By 10am, the Eleanora had moved to about a quarter-mile from the shore when Metcalfe ordered his crew to open fire. The Eleanora “fired round and grape shot at them, and dislodged them all from the village,” the officer wrote.

Round shot are simply the large cannonballs most people associate with wooden 18th century warships. But grapeshot–a canister filled with musket balls, much like a shotgun shell, designed solely to kill and maim individuals–was in many ways an even nastier weapon.

At noon, the author and six men went ashore to burn the village and “a place of worship” and fired upon the natives, “but by the constant firing from the ship, they did not attempt to attack us.”

Then the author wrote that he went back to the ship to get water casks. But this time, “The natives came down in great numbers, throwing their spears and stones, which obliged us to go on board again, our object unaccomplished.” The Eleanora rained down more fire on the Hawaiians. “They then all went up the summit of a hill, thinking the shot from the ship would not reach them there, but we fired two guns with such good aim, that they were soon convinced of their error,” the officer wrote. Only when the Hawaiians fled to low ditches did the ship finally cease firing.

Relations between the ship and the Hawaiians settled down over that evening. In fact, the Eleanora officer wrote that the next morning, a couple canoes showed up “and were well-treated.”

The Eleanora remained at anchor near Honua‘ula for three or four days, then sailed north. Everything changed shortly after they got moving. “We had been under way about an hour and a half, with a light breeze, when the natives in canoe alongside, informed us that the chief of the people that had stolen the boat, lived behind a point, to the northward, we then hauled our wind, went

Metcalfe’s officers tried to calm him down, but failed.

Metcalfe’s reaction was pure treachery.

First, he secretly told his crew to man the Eleanora’s starboard guns, which were loaded with musket balls and nails. Then he told the 170-212 canoes, which that day had surrounded the Eleanora to trade, to move to the ship’s starboard side.

Again, his top officers pleaded with Metcalfe to calm down. Again, they failed.

by Metcalfe’s son Thomas, is captured by Hawaiians in Kona. Hawaiians kill everyone aboard save Isaac Davis, who is spared by Kamehameha in exchange for him providing military assistance; Eleanora boatswain John Young is similarly captured in Kealakekua Bay, and given same deal as Davis.

Later 1790 - With the assistance of captured cannons and Davis and Young, Kamehameha routes Maui warriors at the Battle of Kepaniwai (Iao Valley); Kamehameha conquers Maui 1795 - Kamehameha conquers Oahu 1796 - Kamehameha aborts invasion of Kauai 1819 - Kamehameha dies round the point and came to anchor,” the officer wrote.

The next day, Chief Kaopuiki came aboard, saying he could deliver both the stolen boat and the missing boat keeper– if Metcalfe would give him a reward.

According to his officer, Metcalfe offered a musket, eight cartridges, a bar of iron and a piece of Bengal cloth for the man, and the same again for the boat.

Kaopuiki agreed, and delivered the boat keeper’s thigh bones to Metcalfe. Amazingly, Kaopuiki got his reward.

The next day, Kaopuiki showed up again, this time carrying the keel of the stolen cutter. He then asked for his second reward.

Metcalfe ordered his crew to fire a full broadside into the canoes. At least a hundred people were killed outright, with at least the same number wounded–many of whom died soon after.

The scene was every bit as bloody and horrible as you can imagine.

“To attempt to describe the horrible scene, that ensued, is too much for my pen,” Metcalfe’s officer later wrote.

“The water alongside continued of a crimson colour for at least 10 minutes; some were sinking, others lying half out of their canoes, without arms or legs; while others lay in their canoes weltering in their blood. Although the appearance was so horrid, the people

after firing wished to get into the boat, and use boarding spikes to kill those in the water; but by severely punishing two or three, they desisted from their dreadful purpose.”

Writing from the Hawaiian perspective, the historian Kamakau described the aftermath. “Even those who swam away were shot down,” he wrote. “At noon that day the Eleanor sailed, and the people went out and brought the dead ashore, some diving down into the sea with ropes and others using hooks; and the dead were heaped on the sands at Olowalu. Because the brains of many were oozing out where they had been shot in the head, this battle with the ship Eleanor and her captain was called ‘The spilled brains.’

It was a sickening sight, as Mahulu and others have reported it; the slaughtered dead were heaped upon the sand; wives, children, parents, and friends came to view and mourn over their dead; and the sound of loud wailing arose.”

And then the Eleanora sailed away to the Big Island.

At the conclusion of his account, the anonymous officer put the blame on the massacre squarely on Metcalfe, then warned other Americans from returning to Hawaii. But by the time that account was published in Great Britain, the aftermath of the massacre had already sent shockwaves throughout Hawaii. The Olowalu Massacre was, for lack of a better term, a trigger event that set in motion very rapid changes for Maui and Hawaii.

Six weeks after the Eleanora shot up Olowalu, Hawaiians captured the Fair American–commanded by Simon Metcalfe’s son Thomas–in Kona and killed the entire crew save a crewmember named Isaac Davis. Kamehameha himself spared Davis’ life, in exchange for him becoming his military adviser.

Along with John Young–the boatswain of the Eleanora who was also captured at Kealakekua Bay around the time the Fair American was taken, and who later gave his own account of the Olowalu Massacre to the English explorer George Vancouver–the two men instructed Kamehameha in the tactical deployment of two new cannons that the king also obtained. Later in 1790, they used those guns to great effect at the bloody Battle of Kepaniwai, which allowed Kamehameha to conquer Maui once and for all. Metcalfe’s massacre at Olowalu had brought western warfare to Hawaii, changing the islands forever.

Today, there’s no monument or marker at Olowalu to tell people what had happened there. For people like Clifford Naeole, this must change.

“Olowalu is special,” Naeole says.

“Olowalu is a place with significance.

But Olowalu as a place is not really recognized. It needs to have its own sense of place. There needs to be an altar, a temple erected there, just like Wounded Knee.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more history articles, visit: mauitime.com/history

Tasting the Music AMY HANAIALI‘I’S NEW WINE PAIRS GREAT WITH HER UPCOMING SHOWS AT THE KING KAMEHAMEHA GOLF CLUB

my Hanaiali‘i fans can’t help but enjoy her departure from Ha`i into R&B in her fall 2015 release Chardonnay. This album shows another facet in her illustrious music career, one she’s paired with her own vintage of wine.

This Thursday, Jan. 21, she’ll kick off a series of three dinner shows featuring her wine and music at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.

“I'm having an amazing time with having my wine be part of my music event,” says Hanaiali‘i. “It's really special. Fans all over Hawaii are really enjoying it. Pairing my Chardonnay album with my Chardonnay wine. I will be doing music off of that album, which Michael Ruff produced. It's all sung in English. Wine, music and a prime rib and seafood buffet. I will be doing a little of everything at these shows. The VIP reception is going to be on the rooftop at the club. It's going to be breathtaking.”

Her rooftop meet-and-greet starts at 6pm, and you’ll have the opportunity to taste each of her wines–the merlot and chardonnay– along with Amy. These wines are near and dear to her heart and palate, and she created them with her style and music in mind.

“The wine is my palate,” says Hanaiali‘i.

“I'm really a merlot lover. I had my winemaker and partners make the wine the way I like it. We won a 90 on Spectator in Sonoma. The chardonnay is something new for me. I asked them if they could make it smooth and buttery. It's my favorite. When I was doing Evita I was finishing the vocals on the album and realized the music paired perfectly with the wine. Taste the music.”

Chardonnay the album ventures into new territory for hard core falsetto Hanaiali`i fans, but her attention to the details gives the album its edge. On “Leave the Light On” and her jazzy Bob Marley cover of “Waiting in Vain,” she is joined by

Fiji who also raps on the album. In the studio she teamed up with Tris Imboden from the group Chicago to do drums, Jimmy Johnson–who plays with James Taylor–for bass and Gannin Arnold on guitar (he started a band with the drummer from Foo Fighters). Michael Ruff not only produced the album but also plays keyboards and does background vocals with Eric Gilliom, Amy’s brother. The result is a solid foray into an eclectic wine-drinking album.

“There are a lot of originals,” says Hanaiali‘i. “It’s very acoustic-y, vibe-y, Shania Twaine-y, but a little more soulful. It’s a fun album. Something totally different that has rhythm and blues, acoustic and jazz.”

I liked the idea of pairing the wine with the music, and popped a bottle of Hanaiali‘i merlot just to experience it. I definitely feel the country influences in a few of her tracks like “I Would Have Stayed” and “The Meaning of Love,” which features steel guitar and mandolin plucking. “Every part of love” is soulful but upbeat, and it’s the catchy tune on the album. She also sneaks in a Hawaiian title with “Uale ‘a o Ka Mahina,” but it’s a love ballad sung in English.

I hardly ever drink merlot, but Hanaiali‘i describes it as a bold cab drinker’s merlot, with dark berry and chocolate notes. It’s from a single-source grape in Saint Helena in Napa. The merlot won two gold medals in last year’s West Coast Wine Competition.

The wine is delightful, and either I’ve been converted to a merlot lover or this one is exceptional. So far I’ve found the versatile album Chardonnay pairs well with both her chardonnay and her merlot. I know it will pair even better with the menu at the King Kamehameha Golf Club dinner show, and you can get it by the bottle at her show.

“I’m creating music all the time, in Hawaiian, jazz and R & B,” says Hanaiali‘i. “I’ve been grooming my fan base for this over time. I had Michael Ruff, from Kaua‘i, produce Generation Hawaii. I had a tune on that album with Ernie Watts called an ‘Evil Talent’ with

sax. Then I did Friends and Family of Hawaii that was duets with all the males of Hawaii–Willie Nelson, Robert Cazimero, Fiji, Rebel Souljahs–in different genres.

I even went into reggae mode. What’s interesting about Hawaiian music is that it’s hard for people to sing in Hawaiian, but Hawaiian people can sing in any genre. So as an artist, you’re always growing and changing and getting better and better. I’m a songwriter. I love to challenge imagery in people’s minds, melodies and collaborations.”

Bridges to Maui TALKING STORY WITH JEFF BRIDGES ABOUT LIFE, ART AND DUDELINESS MT: Very cool. I have to ask, given the shocking news we had recently, do you plan on doing any songs to pay tribute to David Bowie?

JB: Not right now, but you never know.

You’re dropping a lot of good ideas on me.

The Bowie idea, the uke idea...We’re both Starman, you know, so I have an affinity to him in that way. But I haven’t worked out any of those tunes.

MT: So, another thing I have to ask is Dude-related, of course. I imagine that the Sheraton that night is going to stock the bar with a lot of Kahlua, more so than usual. Do you expect to see a lot of people out in the audience clad in bathrobes?

JB: [Laughs.] Could be. I feel so blessed to have been a big part of that movie, The Big Lebowski. It’s one of my favorite movies, whether I was in it or not. It’s just a wonderful film, you know? The Coen Brothers, they’re masters. They really know how to make movies... And of all my movies, that’s probably the one I’m most recognized for. And I don’t mind that at all.

T

here’s probably no actor whose name is as synonymous with just taking it easy as Jeff Bridges. So we imagine that when he travels to Maui to play a show this Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Sheraton Maui Resort, he’ll enjoy himself. Bridges is perhaps best known for playing the Dude in the insanely quotable cult classic The Big Lebowski, but the Oscar winner, musician and anti-hunger activist is quite the achiever. We recently caught up with Bridges, who abided us a conversation about everything from his work with No Kid Hungry to being the Dude.

MAUITIME: I noticed you’re playing a show on Maui, but not on the other islands. What brings you out to Maui to play a single show?

MT: Do you plan on doing any islandhopping while you’re there?

JB: Yeah, we’ll probably be [checking out] different islands. We haven’t figured ‘em out yet, which ones we’re going to visit, but we’ll probably take a little trip. My wife will be coming with me. She’s my, uh, groupie. I travel with my own groupie. That’s kind of nice.

JB: Could be. You never know. Chris and I love to play around, so if something pops up, we may just show up somewhere else, too.

MT: Any plans on working some islandinspired sounds–say, working a uke part into a tune or two?

JB: I’ve been very involved with the hunger issue for about 30 years now. I helped out an organization called the End Hunger Network 30 years ago, and about 20 years ago we shifted our focus from world hunger to hunger here in America, because it started to raise its head and it continues today. One in five kids here in our country struggle with food insecurity... I’m happy to say that it’s really a bipartisan issue.

MT: Speaking of politics, in my mind, the Dude would totally support Bernie Sanders. Do you have any thoughts on the candidate roster going into this election?

JB: Yeah, they’re all fascinating. I’m enjoying listening to all the candidates. Talking about hunger, Martin O’Malley, also running on the Democratic ticket, we jammed together up in Maryland. He’s a musician and we played together at different events. He’s really on the forefront of ending child hunger in his state.

MT: You’ve always seemed like a happy guy—blissful, even. What could you tell our readers about maintaining that state of mind in an often chaotic world?

JB: Yeah, well, it’s quite wonderful to be alive, you know? And like the Dude might say, there’s strikes and gutters. There are some bad times that are challenging and some wonderful times. And for me, one of the strategies or the tasks is to get out of my own way–whether it’s preparing for a role, or doing music or making a painting or anything, just kind of get out of my way of my own personal notions about the results that are hoped for and just kind of letting the thing come through me.

JEFF BRIDGES: We were asked, for one thing. And that’s always nice, to be invited. And my brother has a place in the islands, so I’ll be spending some time with him. And it gives me a chance to play with my good buddy Chris Pelonis, who is my good friend and musical director of the Abiders, the band that we are both in.

MT: Yeah, that seems like a good idea.

Maui is the kind of place where you never know who’s going to show up on stage and play a set. Willie Nelson comes to mind in that regard. Is that in the cards, potentially, while you’re there?

MT: You’ve been involved with the fight against child hunger for a long time. Any plans on helping to bring the issue into the national dialogue ahead of the 2016 elections?

MT: Do you work out your set lists in advance or do you just kind of see how it feels and build it from there?

JB: We’ve been working on some new material and reworking some of the other stuff. Some songs from Crazy Heart and some stuff from our albums we’ve done in the past with the Abiders, an album that I put out with my buddy T-Bone Burnett after Crazy Heart.

We’ll do some songs off that, and some, like I said, some new songs that we’re working on, too.

Love Story ‘Carol’ is an instant classic, full of vision and ideals ★★★★★ Rated R / 118 Min.

he opening image of Carol is a close up of a street grate. As the camera pulls back, we take in the rich, longstanding patterns that make up this small but integral part of the landscape and the film begins from there to establish a world that is now alien to most: America in the 1950s. Like the street grid, the patterns of this world are firmly established and in place, with Americans partaking in shopping, marriage and their careers in a manner that could be described as ritualistic and mechanical. Watching the inner working of a 1950s era department store is, indeed, as oddly fascinating as seeing someone commandeer a space shuttle.

When we meet Therese, played by Rooney Mara, she’s a friendly but meek young woman, working in a department store. Therese is wearing a silly hat and seems shy and unassuming. When Carol (Cate Blanchett) walks into her section and exudes movie star glamour, we get it immediately: Carol is radiant, exudes

wealth and control, gloriously standing out from the other shoppers. From that moment on, it’s clear that the single, shy Therese is putty in the hands of the married, captivating Carol.

Carol is based on a story by Patricia Highsmith, the author of the thematically similar Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. While Carol isn’t a thriller, it shares the intensity, period and idea of concealed identity. The central characters in those films were either gay or struggled to understand their inner longing, whereas in Carol, Therese gradually begins to understand that her attraction to Carol is sexual, though the relationship has an obsessive, controlling quality that only Carol seems aware of.

The sex scene comes late in the film and it’s a surprise. Carol is designed to resemble the classy, old-fashioned films that were playing in the 1950s, with the bedroom scene between Mara and Blanchett the core reason (aside from some profanity) that this received an R-rating. I mention the scene not as a warning but to admit that it took me off guard, as the eroticism on hand is otherwise more ce-

rebral than physically conveyed.

Carol is an instant classic, a film so full in its vision and ideas, it feels from start to finish like a work that will last. Through use of color, costumes, sets and well selected performers, director Todd Haynes recreates the 1950s in a way that feels less like a facsimile and more akin to time travel. His vision of ‘50s America is so precise that it provides a window into what we once were, as well as subtext on how those alive at the time viewed the taboos at hand. It’s worth noting that Haynes’ first, best and still unreleased Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (in which music star Carpenter’s life was told through Barbie dolls) was also about breaking through societal expectations.

Blanchett finds the layers to convey how Carol is both adventurous but cal-

culated in her choices, while Mara is thoroughly touching and open. Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler stand out in supporting roles that illuminate the societal attitudes towards Carol and Therese’ relationship, but it’s the two leads that will mesmerize you.

The story is always involving, though the film is sometimes emotionally chilly.

This is perhaps because Carol’s practical, grounded approach to her feelings is stronger than Therese’s more demonstrative manner of behaving.

Haynes finds the heart of his film in the wraparound scene: the close-up of a hand on a shoulder, appearing early as a suspicious moment. Later, seen from a different angle and with further understanding, the image leaves a bruise. ■

Be careful. The boat you’re in is barely afloat. Water laps hungrily at the edges of the hull, and occasionally gleefully spills over. With each new invasion of wet, your vessel sinks a millimeter deeper, thereby making further flooding almost inevitable. My message is this: you simply can’t take new things (or people) on board right now. You’ll sink. This isn’t the time to consider what needs to be added to your life. That’s just gotta wait. For now, keep things simple: concentrate on bailing the boat, getting to where you’re going, and caring for the people you’ve already got on board.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Cut a Gemini off from their cellphone and Internet and they practically go into shock. Even if you’re one of those people who publicly professes to never answering your phone, you must confess that when you’re without it you feel kind of lost. You’re communication-dependent, which isn’t really a critique. At least it means you’re constantly engaged with the world around you, which is more than I can say for some other signs. But this week, when your regular avenues of communication break down, try not to collapse in helpless exasperation. There are ways and ways. Find one that you’re not used to using, preferably one you’ve never tried before.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I wish at least one of us understood what was happening to you, or why. It’s confusing as hell, and probably pretty scary on top of that. I’m sorry, darling, but you probably won’t get to the bottom of it this week, either. I wish I could help you; the unknown is one of the most frightening things there is. But I’m, at least at the moment, as clueless as you are. I do, however, have some good news: Even if you can’t figure out what exactly is happening, or why, you can come lots closer to being able to deal with it; i.e., learning when resistance is useful, and when to simply surrender to the situation and save your hope and energy for when it might do more good.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’re pretty good about friendship-maintenance. But there’s no denying the smoking evidence I see over your shoulder: a few wrecked, blackened, burnt bridges from your past. There’s still hope for them, though; this week offers a chance for you to repair some of those damaged relationships. People might be willing to consider wiping the slate clean, then begin afresh.

Try it. Sling rope bridges across the gaps; you can build them up later, once contact’s been established.

Remember, though, this is just the first step. Motivation is plentiful the next two weeks, thanks to astrological influences; patience is something you and your friends will have to come up with on your own.
