The Maui News of course let Chun get away with this nonsense, but seriously– does he really believe it? Yes, affordable home construction is abysmal right now, but that’s not what Chun said. He said the law is a “de facto moratorium” on “new home” construction. Not merely “affordable” homes, but homes on the open market as well. So those super-luxurious million-dollar condos going up near the Wailea Gateway Center are just an illusion, then? Oh, if only Chun was correct...

SHOW ME THE WATER STILL AFLOAT Like Kane, it looks like we still have the “Show Me The Water” law to kick around. Yes, the common-sense law that dates to 2007 and requires developers to prove they have a long-term source of water before getting an approval to start building will remain on the books, despite nearly every local public official around blaming it for the county’s lack of affordable housing.

There had been talk that the Maui County Council might strike down the bill, but on Wednesday, Jan. 6, the council’s Water Resources Committee voted unanimously to leave the law alone, according to the Jan. 7 Maui News. A big part of the reason is that nearly 40 people showed up to testify that allowing development without securing water first is, well, horrible public policy.

Still, that didn’t prevent some developers from doubling down on the law as a housing-killer. “The water availability ordinance has been an important factor in creating the scenario that we face today,” Alexander & Baldwin Properties’

Looks like we can add Dain Kane’s name to the list of those wanting to replace Mike Victorino in the Maui County Council’s Wailuku seat.

“With the support of family, friends, and long standing supporters throughout Maui County, I’m excited to once again earn the trust of our citizenry to serve our community,” Kane said in a Jan. 8 statement posted on his website (Dainkane.com). “I bring a candidacy of experience–an understanding of the complex inner workings of county governance, and in particular, county legislative governance, and have consistently demonstrated an ability to work with my peers to accomplish important objectives.

My focus and commitment will be to further our community’s interests with a sense of fairness, dignity, and respect.”

What a quote! Kane has friends! Kane has experience! Kane supports fairness!

Kane can accomplish important objectives! Oh, if it were only possible for Kane to run for all the jobs, rather than just County Councilman–think of what he could accomplish!

Though Kane (a government consultant since 2007) lost the last two elections he entered (the 2012 Office of Hawaiian Affairs Maui residency seat election was close; the 2006 Maui County Mayor’s race wasn’t), he’s certainly a strong candidate for this race, considering he held the seat from 1998 to 2006 (his biggest claim to fame during those years was the ban on smoking in Maui County restaurants, which was passed in 2002). Of course, his adversaries have their strong points, too: Maui County Managing Director Keith Regan has all the advantages of being one of Mayor Alan Arakawa’s top aides, and Joe Blackburn (who also ran for the seat in the two previous elections) gives out free donuts every Thursday morning.

Well, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary fired back with a press release to “clarify” all that doomsday talk about missing whales. Turns out we might be worrying over nothing.

• This year’s arrivals appear to be in keeping with long-term historic observations. Recent years have had whales arriving early, making a “normal” arrival appear to be late.

• HIHWNMS conducts Ocean Count, a citizen science volunteer effort to count whales, every year at the end of January, February and March. Numbers in February and March are typically higher than January.

• Numbers of whales usually gradually increase in January and February, since whales don’t all come in a mass at the same time.

MAUI BREWCO BOSS JOINS BREWERS ASSOCIATION BOARD Maui Brewing Co. founder and CEO Garrett W. Marrero has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Brewers Association (BA). Marrero will assume his new post for a three-year term beginning February 2016.

As a member of the BA board, Marrero will assist in governing the activities of the professional division of the association and other divisions such as the American Homebrewers Association, Brewers Publications and events. Garrett will continue to serve on the Government Affairs Committee within the BA. “I’m honored to have been elected to the Board by my peers.,” Marrero said. “I’ve learned a great deal from many in the industry over the last 11 years and I’m excited to offer my input and be a resource for true craft beer.

Our industry faces many new challenges and I look forward to fighting the good fight.”

trade organization that promotes and protects American craft brewers, their beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts. Though calls for a public high school in Kihei are probably older than he is, state Representative Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui, got top billing in a Jan. 11 press release on the school’s long-awaited ground-breaking.

“I am ecstatic to see hundreds of hours of tireless work by so many people, over so many years, finally bear fruit,” Ing said at the ground-breaking, according to the release.

“This is more than just a school. Our community currently does not have a stadium or even a gym. Through sports and clubs, our high school will give our young people a better sense of belonging and serve as a true hub for our community at large.”

To put all this in context, Ing wasn’t even a legislator in 2011 when officials released the school’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Given the scale of the project, and the many, many years residents spent pointing to rapidly increasing South Maui population numbers and asking when they’d get a public high school, a wide range of state and local officials attended the ground-breaking, including Governor David Ige, Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui, state Senators Roz Baker and Gil Keith-Agaran, Rep. Ing and Mayor Alan Arakawa.

That’s a lot to ask of a public school, but the way Ing sees it, the future Kihei High is even bigger than that. “I’m really excited that this will be the first Net Zero high school in the entire state,” said Ing, according to the news release. “It sets an example for what high schools should look like in the future.

This is not your grandfather’s high school.”

While the press release states that the Legislature “met the Governor’s request to fully fund” the school (to the tune of $130 million), Ing estimates that school construction will require “an additional $50-$100 million depending on the final design and cost of materials.”

In December, Canada’s supportive organization The Transgender Project released a biographical video of the former Paul Wolscht, 46 and the father of seven children with his ex-wife, Marie, describing his new life as not only a female but a six-year-old female, Stephoknee Wolscht. She told the Daily Xtra that not acting her real age (even while doing “adult” things like working a job and driving a car) enables her to escape “depression and suicidal thoughts.” Among the trans-age’s favorite activities are (coloring-book) coloring, creating a play-like “kingdom,” and wearing “really pretty clothes.” Stephoknee now lives with the couple who adopted her.

American “millennials” (those aged 18 to 29) continue a “long-standing tradition,” The Washington Post wrote in December, describing a Harvard Institute of Politics poll on their views on war. Following the recent Paris terrorist attacks, about 60 percent of U.S. millennials said additional American troops would be needed to fight the Islamic State, but 85 percent answered, in the next question, that no, they themselves were “probably” or “definitely” not joining the military.

In November, as anti-Muslim tensions arose in several U.S. cities following the Paris terrorist attack, two chapters of the Satanic Temple church (San Jose, California, and Minneapolis) offered to protect Muslims who feared a backlash. The Minneapolis group offered “just big dudes walking you to where you need to be,” for example, grocery shopping–an offer “of genuine compassion for our fellow human beings.” (The offer was subsequently rescinded by the Minneapolis church’s executive ministry, reasoning that they are “not a personal security service.”)

EXCEPTIONAL FLORIDIANS Police in St. Petersburg reported the December arrest of a 12-year-old boy whose rap sheet listed “more than 20” arrests since age 9. He, on a bicycle, had told an 89-year-old driver at a gas station that the man’s tire was low, and when the man got out to check, the boy hopped in the car and took off. And a driver accidentally plowed through two small businesses in Pensacola in December, creating such destruction that the manager of one said it looked like a bomb had hit (forcing both–a tax service and a casket company–to relocate).

Breen Peck, 52, an air traffic controller who has been having career troubles in recent years, was arrested during a traffic stop on New York’s Long Island in December when officers found illegal drugs in his car.

“That’s meth,” he said. “I’m an air traffic controller.” “I smoke it to stay awake.” And in a “she-said/he-said” case, wealthy Saudi businessman Ehsan Abdulaziz, 46, was acquitted of rape in December in England’s Southwark Crown Court, apparently persuading jurors of “reasonable doubt” about his DNA found in the alleged victim’s vagina.

Perhaps, his lawyer said, Abdulaziz was still aroused after sex with the other woman in the apartment and accidentally fell directly upon the alleged victim lying on a sofa.

IRONIES Christopher Manney was fired from the Milwaukee Police Department in 2014 after shooting a black suspect to death in a case

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Jasper Harrison, 47, working inside the storage unit in Edgewater, Florida, where he grows his marijuana, heard a helicopter overhead on Dec. 9, panicked, and called 911 to turn himself in to pre-empt what he presumed was a SWAT raid. Actually, the helicopter belonged to a local news station headed elsewhere, but police later arrested Harrison based on the 911 call. And Lloyd Franklin, 34 and suspected in a North Carolina double murder, fatally shot himself in a Bensalem, Pennsylvania, motel room in November when police knocked on the door. THE CONTINUING CRISIS Two foreign students at the liberal arts Oberlin College complained in a recent school publication that the cafeteria selections–supposedly “inclusive” of world cultures–were actually denigrating other cultures by offering inferior versions of national dishes. Vietnamese student Diep Nguyen wrote that the correct “banh mi” sandwich should be a “crispy baguette with grilled pork, pate, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs” and not, he complained, “ciabatta bread, pulled pork and coleslaw.” Said Japanese student Tomoyo Joshi, sushi with “undercooked rice and lack of fresh fish is disrespectful.” (Cafeteria managers told The Washington Post they were proud of their commitments to other cultures, to local farming, sustainable foods and animal-treatment concerns.) ■

THE SUN SETS ON MAUI SUGAR What the closing of Alexander & Baldwin’s sugar plantation means for us all

ike most reporters in Hawaii, in the hour or so after Alexander & Baldwin’s Jan. 6 announcement that they would shut down their Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) mill in Pu‘unene by the end of this year, I watched with growing fascination as my email inbox quickly filled with statements from public officials wanting to weigh in. Reading through them, I kept seeing the word “sad.”

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz said the news “deeply saddened” him. Hawaii House Speaker Joe Souki called it “a sad day indeed.”

Governor David Ige said he received the news “with sadness.” State House member Justin Woodson (who represents Central Maui, where many cane workers live) said he was “saddened” by how the decision would affect the mill’s nearly 700 employees.

HC&S has grown, harvested and processed sugar cane into molasses on Maui since 1870.

Their 36,000-acre sugar plantation is the last such operation in Hawaii, but it’s fallen on hard times; has for some years now. A few months ago, HC&S also lost a potentially big power-sharing deal with Maui Electric Co. that would have given it about $19 million in revenue, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on Jan. 10. But in their own official statement on the mill closure, A&B officials blamed it all on agribusiness losses.

“A&B’s roots literally began with the planting of sugar cane on 570 acres in Makawao, Maui, 145 years ago,” A&B Executive Chairman Stanley M. Kuriyama, said in his company’s Jan. 6 announcement. “Much of the state’s population would not be in Hawaii today, myself included, if our grandparents or great-grandparents had not had the opportunity to work on the sugar plantations.

our operation running for 16 years after the last sugar company on Maui closed its doors.

We have made every effort to avoid having to take this action. However, the roughly $30 million Agribusiness operating loss we expect to incur in 2015, and the forecast for continued significant losses, clearly are not sustainable, and we must now move forward with a new concept for our lands that allows us to keep them in productive agricultural use.”

The news seemed to surprise many.

Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui found the announcement “hard to believe.” “Personally, I was shocked,” ILWU President Donna Domingo told KHON 2 news.

Others, like anthropologist Carol MacLennan, who has written extensively about Hawaii’s sugar industry, had a different reaction. “I wasn’t surprised,” MacLennan told me. “I knew it was coming. They’ve been hinting at it.”

Indeed, though The Maui News consistently buried the most dire revelations in their accounts, they did report over the last year or two that A&B was moving away from sugar, perhaps soon rather than later: • Aug. 11, 2014: A second quarter report shows that A&B’s agribusiness posted a profit of just $400,000–down from $8.3 million in the same quarter the previous year. Sugar production as a whole is down, blamed on wet weather.

• Nov. 6, 2015: “Significant” third quarter losses for HC&S show a $9 million operating loss for the July-September quarter. Sugar production comes in at 42,500 tons, down from 67,000 tons during the same period of 2014. What’s more, company officials say that they’re looking at “diversifying the crop grown on its 36,000 acres” and will make an announcement on the future of the plantation “by its next earnings call,” which would

take place no later than early March 2016.

• Dec. 4, 2015: HC&S announces that it is conducting a grass-fed beef experiment on 29 of its acres over by old Maui High with 15 head of cattle. One A&B official tells the paper that since November, the company has been seeking an “alternative business model,” and is trying out various other ag plans.

Then on Jan. 4 of this year, Insider Trading Report noted that A&B stock had fallen rather sharply: “2.16% during the past week and dropped 7.2% in the last 4 weeks.” Fortyeight hours later, A&B officials announced that they were ditching sugar entirely.

The mill had simply become unprofitable. It’s why all the other mills in Hawaii closed, too. Wet weather hurt, but sugar crop yields have been falling in Hawaii for decades. The question was never if the Pu‘unene mill would close, but when.

As a result of this decision, most of the 675 or so people who work in the Pu‘unene mill will lose their jobs. If the last 45 years of mill closures in Hawaii are any guides, the transition won’t be easy–there just isn’t enough ag around to pick up the slack, leaving many workers with no other option than to try to move over to the service industry. This, as would be true for any news of mass layoffs, is undeniably sad.

But how much should we mourn for a company that every year churned out thousands of tons of a substance doctors say is bad for us? How many tears should we shed for a plantation that for well over a century ran Maui like a gigantic factory, depleting the island’s soil, diverting its streams and filling its skies with smoke?

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa called A&B’s announcement “the end of an era,” but is it even truly that?

Michigan Technological University anthropologist Carol MacLennan has studied every one of Hawaii’s sugar mill closures, dating back to the late 1960s. Her 2014 book Sovereign Sugar: Industry and Environment in Hawai‘i (published by University of Hawaii Press) is a sweeping look at the tremendous ecological changes sugar brought to the state. “[A closure] can be traumatic,” she told me by phone. “Most of the Big Five dwindled as they diversified their holdings. But A&B has this unusual power on Maui. Because A&B has such a local identity, there’s an assumption of loyalty.”

Sugar production spans 150 or so years of Hawaii history, but it’s greatest years stretched from 1840 (when the Hawaiian kingdom reigned supreme) to 1940 (when the Territory of Hawaii was converting into a massive military bastion for the U.S). In that century, sugar plantations had transformed the islands in ways so deep that they’ll be with us forever.

“By 1920, sugar had remolded the islands into a production machine that drew extensively on island soils, forests, waters, and its island residents, to satisfy North America’s sugar craving,” MacLennan wrote in Sovereign Sugar. “Native communities–human, plant, and animal–adapted, disappeared or found niches in which to survive on a small scale. Imported and transplanted peoples, plants, and animals largely replaced them.”

The plantations were sprawling–covering a quarter-million acres by 1920–and required thousands of workers. Because diseases introduced by contact with Europeans in the late 1700s had devastated Native Hawaiians (their numbers dropping from between 279,000-800,000 in 1780 to a mere 30,000 by 1900), the plantations imported

Historically, plantation owners like A&B have typically retained their water rights when they close mills, MacLennan told me.

But it’s unclear how the mill’s closure will affect NHLC’s fight, since A&B has said it still wants some agricultural uses on its land.

Murakami didn’t return a phone call for this story, but he told Civil Beat on Jan. 6 that A&B’s decision to stop growing sugar will certainly impact the case. “The question is how much,” he said. “There’s clear-

huge numbers of workers of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Puerto Rican and Portuguese workers, forming the “mixed plate” ethnic makeup that largely populates Hawaii today.

Such massive change occurred throughout Hawaii’s ecology. Thirsty sugar depleted the soil of nutrients and demanded huge quantities of water through rainfall and irrigation, according to MacLennan. The plantations also harvest whole forests for planting and fuel (though quickly learned that preservation also served a vital role).

In an attempt to control rats, plantation owners imported the mongoose in the 1880s. It “proved environmentally unsound,” according to MacLennan, and led to the wholescale slaughter of Hawaii’s ground-nesting birds.

One group that certainly isn’t looking at the demise of sugar harvesting on Maui in romantic terms is the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation. Founded in 1974, the NHLC is a nonprofit public interest law firm that’s spent the last decade and a half petitioning the state–on behalf of the East Maui residents who make up Na Moku ‘Aupuni o Ko‘olau Hui–to restore flows in 27 Maui streams diverted by East Maui Irrigation (a subsidiary of A&B) to Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (another subsidiary of A&B). It’s a tedious legal process, given that HC&S uses so much water that it’s long been loathe to give up.

Throughout Hawaii, former sugar lands have given way to a variety of uses–homes, resorts, mac nut fields. It’s likely some or all of that will end up here, though it’ll be some time before we know for certain. In 1971, according to Sovereign Sugar, the Kohala Sugar Co. on the Big Island announced that it would close, putting 500 people out of work. Transition there was rough and took seven years.

On Jan. 6, A&B released some details about three “diversified agriculture” test projects they intend to implement on their 36,000 acres: • Energy crops: “HC&S has initiated crop trials to evaluate potential sources of feedstock for anaerobic conversion to biogas,” stated the company’s press release. The statement added that HC&S has entered into “preliminary, but confidential, discussions with other bioenergy industry players to explore additional crop-to-energy opportunities.”

• Cattle: As noted above, HC&S is “working with Maui Cattle Company to conduct a grass-finishing pasture trial in 2016.”

• Food crops: “A&B plans to establish an agriculture park on former sugar lands in order to provide opportunities for farmers to access

ly nothing more thirsty than sugar cane.”

Earthjustice attorney Isaac Moriwake, an attorney agreed. In 2014, Earthjustice helped bring about a settlement agreement with HC&S and Wailuku Water Co. on behalf of Hui O Na Wai Eha and Maui Tomorrow to restore the Waihee, Waiehu, Waikapu and Iao Streams.

“Bottom line, it’s a game-changer,” Moriwake told me. Because sugar requires so much more water than diversified agriculture, Moriwake said that even if A&B keeps all of HC&S’ 36,000 acres in ag, they’ll still require far less water than they do so now. “Now that HC&S is closing, we need to reset the fundamental assumptions,” he said. “If you don’t have a use, then the water needs to stay in the rivers and streams right now.”

What will also stop are the cane burns.

The method of harvesting sugar by burning the cane in the fields–the subject of considerable controversy and the first ever lawsuit in Hawaii’s new Environmental Court–will cease by the end of 2016.

The mill itself could be pretty dirty as well. In 2014, the state Department of Health slapped a $1.3 million fine on HC&S for 400 (!) air quality and reporting violations at the mill from 2009 to 2013.

HC&S is still in discussions with the DOH over the fine and violations.

The plantation could also be an extremely dusty place. In our Nov. 29, 2015 issue, we explored one fugitive dust complaint in depth–one that led to a $3,300 violation against HC&S. Workers were working on a windy day in December 2014 over by the Maui Humane Society, and the dust cloud they kicked up caused one resident to complain.

aries who’d grown so powerful after the destruction of the old kapu system in the early 1800s–had grown so powerful that they forced the notorious Bayonet Constitution on King Kalakaua. Its mandate that only property owners could vote meant that two/thirds of Native Hawaiians no longer had a voice over the governing of their islands.

That, thankfully, is in the past. But sugar’s ecological influences over Hawaii are still here, will likely always be here.

“The resulting erasure of what remained of the Hawaiian landscape by sugar’s class of businessmen has serious consequences for sustainability in the islands,” MacLennan wrote. “The faith in the human power to manipulate nature and re-create new landscapes of production continues environmental change and, when not checked, degradation.”

This is why MacLennan told me that sugar will still exist on Maui “in ghost form.”

“Sugar production is ceasing, but A&B is still there,” she said. “You still have a major company with say over the acreage.”

That Central and South Maui could become even dustier once A&B stops growing sugar is a very real fear.

“I’ve read accounts from the 1800s of dust clouds hundreds of feet high and sandstorms so thick a rider could not see the ears on her own horse,” historian Jill Engledow posted on her Maui Then and Now blog on Jan. 6. “I live downwind, and I’d rather have occasional cane smoke.”

For their part, A&B officials insist that they will take steps to keep Central Maui from becoming even more of a dust bowl.

“As the lands are harvested, they will be replanted in a cover crop, transitioned to a replacement crop, or be allowed to return to their natural state with native ground cover,” A&B spokesperson Tran Chinery told me.

The use of the term “native ground cover” is ironic, given how much of Maui’s native ground cover vanished when the sugar plantation came in.

Feel the burn

work? Will Monsanto sweep up more land? Both are too early to say. But another question could be problematic: what will become of the power-sharing agreement between HC&S and Maui Electric Co. (MECO) once the mill shuts down?

“The amount of power we currently receive from HC&S is a small percentage and since October of last year, HC&S has not exported any power to Maui Electric,” MECO spokesperson Kaui Awai-Dickson told me (their agreement stipulates that the mill provide MECO four megawatts of power from March to May and October to December).

That’s good, but there’s a snag. “However, over the years, HC&S has provided reserve or backup power that was available almost immediately to support Maui’s electrical system during extenuating circumstances,” Awai-Dickson added. “Such examples include severe storms or hurricanes where electrical infrastructure is severely damaged or a large generator is lost.

Under these conditions, Maui Electric may not have a sufficient amount of reserve capacity to serve all customers at times when the demand for electricity is high. We are exploring possible options to replace this generation sup-

“A&B is committed to looking for optimal productive agricultural uses for the HC&S lands,” A&B President and CEO Christopher J. Benjamin said in his company’s Jan. 6 announcement. “Community engagement, resources stewardship, food sustainability and renewable energy are all being considered as we define the new business model for the plantation. These are leading us toward a more diversified mix of operations.”

While all this sounds great to most residents, they also struck anthropologist MacLennan as very familiar. “It’s seen as a good thing to get away from monocrop production,” she told me. “People expect that these will keep wages up, but they’re always experimental. Diversified agriculture has been proposed since the 1920s, ‘30s. tried it. It’s a unique dish, with thick boneless chunks of chicken fried karaage-style, but I’ve never had a karaage like this before. It’s deeply crispy and crunchy, salty in a good way, and served with a lemon wedge that gives it a nice acidic zing. Anne says some people also like to dip it in tempura sauce, so I followed suit.

They were right, its good too.

“Everything is made from scratch,” says Anne while translating her dad’s Japanese to English for me. She’s fluent in Japanese, and she says her parents speak mostly Japanese. “The noodles in the ramen are from Sun Noodle in Oahu. The soup broth is a fish and chicken base that my dad makes.

hen it comes to itemizing the benefits of living in a melting pot, food tops the list. But honestly, how often do you take advantage of your local mom and pop restaurant? One of my favorite cozy Kahului stops for homestyle Japanese cuisine is Matsu over on Alamaha. In fact, they’re on of only 2 Japanese restaurants in Kahului. Matsu has been in busi-

By “nothing fancy,” Anne means they cover the classic rolls, but they offer a long list to choose from: tobiko, salmon, unagi, avocado, soft-shell crab, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, takuan, kappa and Kampyo. They make unagi and salmon nigiri, and inari sushi, too. I also like the donburi, and tend to gravitate to the unagi don, but my sister loves the yakitori don. Anne says a lot of their ingredients are Japanese, which gives it all a distinct flavor and style.

“My parents go to Japan every year,” says

The tempura is also wonderful–it’s feather light and crisp. It never overpowers the vegetables and shrimp encapsuled inside. The dipping sauce uses just the right seasoning, too.

TALKING STORY WITH MAUI FRINGE FESTIVAL PERFORMERS LUCIE LYNCH AND MARCIA ZINA MAGER

F

ringe Festivals bring the most outrageous and marginal theater into light. This year’s Maui Fringe Festival at Iao Theatre is the sixth so far on Maui, and will include three days of solo, musical, improv, self-produced, nationally acclaimed and otherwise unique dramatic arts. The Seabury Hall Dance Ensemble will also do a show, and Cocktails and Cabaret will perform burlesque.

One of those acts is the hit Oahu musical Money Talks: But What the Hell is it Saying? I recently got a chance to talk with performers Lucie Lynch and Marcia Zina Mager about their show and what money is actually saying to them.

MAUITIME: What three words best describe your show?

MARCIA ZINA MAGER: Provocative, honest, hilarious.

MT: Ok, so what’s the show about?

MZM: Money Talks is the true story of our lifelong struggles with money, self-worth and the challenging process of trying to write a Broadway musical. Audiences can expect to be surprised, moved, inspired and hopefully walk away pondering their own inherent worth.

MT: What inspired you to write this show?

MZM: Through wildly synchronistic events (which we touch on in our show), we met in Honolulu only to discover that we both had a chronic issue with self-worth and money. But instead of sinking into despair about it, we decided to channel our energy into writing a Broadway musical about money. We spent 18 months working on it–

MT: Did you always want to do theater?

LUCIE LYNCH: I have been singing and writing songs since I could walk!

I studied musical theater in Hamburg, where I was born. I wrote my own one-woman musical, Gabriele’s Universe , which successfully toured all over Germany. I also starred in Carpe Diem , an independent feature film that debuted in New York City. I also perform all over Oahu solo and with my band, Lucie & the Perfect Wave. All in all, I’ve written hundreds of songs and released four CDs. MZM: My background is as an author, journalist, poet and seminar leader. I founded the original “Write from the Heart” national seminar series in Manhattan in the 1980s. I have written 10 books–translated into eight languages– including an international bestseller. As a child, I loved making up songs and being on stage. When I turned 50, I met Academy Award-winning actor Alan Arkin in Honolulu and began studying improvisation with him. That experience launched my performing career.

Since then, I’ve performed as a slam p

poet, had a guest starring role on Hawaii Five-0, wrote my own one-woman show and was invited to audition for America’s Got Talent. Now, at 61, I’m having the time of my life collaborating with the wildly talented Lucie Lynch on Money Talks.

MT: Your show was a hit at the Oahu Fringe Festival. What is performing on Oahu like?

MZM: We’ve performed Money Talks a dozen times on Oahu, to diverse audiences ranging from millionaires to the homeless, from educated theater-goers to church congregations to recovering Pacific Islander drug addicts to the entire women’s prison.

MT: Whoa, the women’s prison sounds like a tough crowd.

many times, and asking deeper questions about self-worth and success in front of an audience, we’ve ironically (or perfectly) come to realize that we’re overflowing with abundance and resources.

MT: What do you do when you’re not performing this show?

LL: I perform around Oahu solo and with my band, Lucie & The Perfect Wave.

I’m a vocal coach and I teach “Sing Your Soul” workshops.

MZM: I’m wife as well as the proud mother of a 17-year-old successful entrepreneur. I also work with writers around the country as The Write Coach, and I’m an intuitive counselor.

MT: Which hat would you say comes easiest? Singing or writing?

MZM: What’s wonderful about performing this show together is that it continues to invite us to be really present, both with the audience and each other.

There always comes a moment when the boundaries disappear and we’re all experiencing it together. Also, we constantly improvise with ourselves, the audience and the musician. In many ways, the show is always brand-new.

MZM: That is how we complement each other wonderfully. Lucie is 38, tall, blonde and German. I am 61, short, gray-ish and Jewish! But we both love wearing all the hats! Singing is like breathing for Lucie, who has been singing her whole life and writing is second nature to me–I’ve been doing it since I was a child.

MT: What would you like Maui Fringe Festival goers to remember about your yo show?

MT: If you could be in any Broadway show, which would it be?

MZM: That something difficult, a taboo like money and self-worth, can be b transformed through creativity. But B also that the deeper truth is that tha money does not define us, never will, w and that we are all richer beyond beyo our imagination.

MZM: We want to sing and dance and star (at least for a few days) in the Broadway show that we’re still writing, KaChing.

Our goal is to see it hit Broadway!

MT: How has money affected you aff as an artist?

MT: Pretend you’re writing me a guide book of what to do on Maui–What are your top things to do?

LL: I love to drive down the road to Hana to have a dip in the Lover’s Pool, then stop at Coconut Glenn’s ice cream shack.

MZM: I used to live on Lanai. For me, it’s a drive to visit Upcountry Maui, especially Kula and Makawao.

MT: What are you most proud of?

MZM: For both us, we’re really proud of our determination and courage, of never giving up on this show (and on KaChing), no matter how down or discouraged we get. And whenever someone in the audience is moved to tears, we know our show is making a difference. And that’s the best reward of all.

Butch & Sundance!

The classic Redford-Newman western is back for a special TCM screening ★★★★★ Rated PG / 110 Min.

T

he 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of the greatest westerns ever made, because it’s so much more than a horse opera or cowboy shoot ‘em up. It’s about heroes and mythmaking, why love is so complicated and how two dastardly criminals are so likable, to us and each other.

The setting is Wyoming of the 1890s and we’re reminded, as the best films in this genre do, that the days of cowboys and outlaws weren’t for wimps. The streets were muddy, the homes were dusty with dirt-encrusted floors and people were shot for giving someone a wrong look or an unkind word.

The opening scenes of George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are in brown, washed-out color tones, giving viewers a sense of the wild west days of old. As the establishing scene progresses, in which gunplay breaks out over a card game, the film slowly switches to color.

We meet Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and Harry Longabaugh (Robert Redford)–

”The Sundance Kid”–two train robbers whose antics are becoming so widely noted that a hired posse of lawmen are in pursuit.

While they manage to outride their opponents for a time, our two anti-heroes wonder if their time is coming to end, and if their much discussed escape to Bolivia is an actual possibility.

Along for the ride is Etta (Katherine Ross), a school teacher who is Sundance’s girlfriend but flirts openly with Butch. Over the course of the film, it seems she’s in love with both men, a touch that seems to reflect the flower power era in which the film was released. When your boyfriends are played

by Redford and Newman, who could blame her for failing to chose just one?

It’s hard for me to write about this movie in terms of its story, which is compelling but maybe the eighth or ninth best thing about it. Let’s talk about Redford and Newman: they are positively sensational, share such a delicious chemistry and are such a joy to watch, they make this the captivating, sexy and surprisingly hilarious ride that it is. Ross is a marvelous match for them both and good luck resisting the scene where Newman takes Ross on a bike ride (set to the Os-

car-winning “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head”). Or the sequence where Butch and Sundance use too much dynamite to blow up a bank vault. Or the hysterical bit where they attempt to rob a bank in Spanish.

There’s also the scene where Butch and Sundance talk one another into jumping off a high cliff, which feels like a something you’d see in a subsequent Lethal Weaponstyle buddy comedy. Here, it’s funny but suspenseful, because the stakes are so high for the characters. We genuinely care about these outlaws, making their brushes with danger all the more exciting.

There’s a montage that portrays the joy the three fugitives share while on a voyage–the editing and music in this portion is masterful. Otherwise, the story builds in its scope and escalating danger. The extended chase with “the man in the white hat” evokes a

sort of existential tension and dread.

It’s also a great comedy, made all the richer for how obvious it is that Newman and Redford’s unforced chemistry reveals a genuine affection they shared in real life.

The Sting may be the vehicle that won the Best Picture Oscar and is arguably the better known movie (perhaps for its legendary score as much as the con man angle). Yet Butch and Sundance is the better, funnier and more consistently thrilling movie.

I took my mother to see this at the legendary Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in Denver a few years back and it’s a memory I treasure. Seeing a movie this great on the big screen is a gift (it’s back in theaters now for a special screening). If it’s been a while or, heavens to Betsy, if you’ve never seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid before, what in tarnation are you waiting for? ■

Having something you’re really proud of get torn to bits by assholes has probably made you reluctant to share another of your secret masterpieces. This week, however, would be a good time to reveal that special bit of yourself. It probably won’t be universally lauded or adored–no one could guarantee that–but it will almost certainly be respected, and you can’t realistically hope for much more.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Only Sagittarians despise the thought of being stuck in prison more than you do, Leo. Although their longing for freedom is quite different from yours, the result is the same; neither of you can abide feeling trapped for long. I’m not going to make a case for how great imprisonment is; however, sometimes it’s imposed on you not for the protection of others but for your own safety and well-being. That’s the case this week. Left to your own devices you could really mess shit up at the moment. If someone’s sheltering you (hint: it might feel like smothering), let them. You can shrug off their care next week, when your lack of foresight won’t mess up your whole life.

Keep your ears pricked for the “click.” This week you’re likely to experience several examples of that profound, subtle, and almost mystical union with someone else. It could happen in conversation, artistic collaboration, during sex, or all three, or any number of other situations. It’s not that you’re likely to miss it when it happens, but you may not appreciate how special it is, until it’s too late. Don’t do a Before Sunrise; exchange numbers, make plans, and dream. Sure, this could lead to disappointment; the other route, however, definitely will.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Don’t expect to accomplish much or get anywhere this week. In fact, you’re doomed to spend the bulk of your time getting most of the way somewhere, then changing your mind and reversing direction, then repeating the whole process elsewhere. It’s almost impossible for you to be decisive or efficient right now; planetary influences virtually forbid it. If I were you, I’d postpone major responsibilities if I could; meanwhile, I’d enjoy the silliness of your mental dancing.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Everyone’s experienced that moment, hopefully many times, when a previously opaque and incomprehensible subject suddenly clicks into transparent clarity. The light dawns, as they say.

This can, occasionally, be accompanied by embarrassment, if, say, this took one much longer than it ought to have. In other words, now that you know how short and simple the journey was, it’s humbling that it took you as long as it did. In case you hadn’t guessed, this week might feature one or two of these ego-crushing incidents. Don’t let it get to you, though (better late than never, right?); spending too much time feeling stupid will just keep you from picking up your next clue, and start the whole damn cycle all over again.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

In confrontations with literal-minded, scientific pragmatists who challenge me to try to justify or prove astrology’s relevance, I say: “No, you’re quite right. It’s all bullshit.” Then I move on. Follow my example, please, Gemini. Too many people this week will invite you to throw yourself at brick walls. Astrological influences might make you perversely inclined to try it, even though you know the outcome ahead of time. Resist them.

None of these walls are coming down; your bones will break first. Keep your body and ego unbruised. Politely turn down those goads, and walk away.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Most Virgos I know are, at least a little, embarrassed to admit their sign. As if it’s disgraceful to be so efficient, energetic, dependable, and clean! That’s because some lame and unscrupulous folk have gone to great lengths to shame you about your organizational skills or your fastidiousness. But that’s just so they don’t feel too bad about being such flaky slobs. Screw them. They’re pathetic and they know it. You’re not the least bit pathetic, though. Why don’t you know–deep in your bones–that?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Other people suck, don’t they? At least, that’s what you’re likely to frequently think about them this week.

It’s true that some of those you know could be more generous, but fixating on their stingy behavior will only make you bitter. They can’t be nagged or coaxed out of miserliness; simply trying will probably only intensify it. Unfortunately, this isn’t something you’ll be able to easily ignore, though. It’s not your job or duty to compensate for these scrooges by giving more time, energy, or money (you’ve already done your fair share), but you still might want to. It’d be a nice gift, so please consider it; the world could certainly use it.

The bad news is that your efficiency will drop dramatically. Those who’ve come to expect insane quantities of high-quality productivity from you might be disappointed, or even put out. That’s bullshit, though. You deserve a break, a chance for all those lash-marks on your back to heal. If anyone complains, point to the mountain of accomplishment just behind you and tell them when your lazy-ass peers catch up, then they can resume their nagging, but not before.
