selves, then we live in dark times. Right now, not 50 years ago but today, Republican presidential candidates and officials have discovered that blatant racism appeals to their party’s base.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie fears Syrian refugees so much that he said his state wouldn’t accept any, including “orphans under age five.” Presidential candidate Donald Trump posted completely false (and racist) “statistics” on race and crime–information that seems to have come from neo-Nazis (he’s also advocated building a giant wall on the U.SMexican border). Presidential candidate Ben Carson wants the federal government to monitor “a mosque or any church or any organization or any school or any press corps where there was a lot of radicalization and things that were anti-American.”

And it’s not just Republicans, either. The mayor of Roanoke, Virginia–a Democrat named David Bowers–even made national headlines when the public learned of a statement he made in opposition to accept-

ing Syrian refugees included his approval of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II–an act all but universally decried as both unnecessary and unconstitutional.

On Nov. 20, as Republican governors and Republican presidential candidates were knocking each other over as they label the thousands of Syrian refugees trying to escape not just ISIS or the brutal regime of Bashar Assad but also the totality of their nation’s long and bloody civil war as “security risks”–a completely baseless slur–U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, D–Hawaii (who was born in Japan) took to the floor of the U.S. Senate this morning to speak out against this dangerous nonsense.

Calling it a victory for free speech, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Hawaii office announced yesterday that the County of Maui has dropped its appeal of a First Amendment case. The case involved Maui pastor Strat Goodhue and his wife Doreen, who in 2013 were handing out religious pamphlets on a public sidewalk outside the Maui Fair when Maui Police Officers asked them to move.

“As part of the settlement agreement, the County of Maui has dropped its appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and, for three years, will conduct additional specialized training for current and new Maui Police Department (“MPD”) officers on upholding the 1st Amendment in public spaces,” stated the Nov. 19 ACLU Hawaii news release.

“After the case was filed, the County of Maui had in turn sued the Maui Fair (“Fair”), whose insurance carrier will pay damages and court costs.”

The incident, according to the ACLU, went down like this: “At the direction of Fair organizers, an MPD officer ordered the Goodhues to leave not just the Fair area, but other nearby public sidewalks as well,” stated the ACLU news release. “The ACLU and the law firm of Davis Levin Livingston filed a federal court lawsuit shortly thereafter.”

Of course, Maui County Corporation Counsel Pat “The Gambler” Wong took issue with that. “Maui Police responded to a complaint from Maui Fair officials that Pastor Strat Goodhue and his wife Doreen were handing out literature on the sidewalk just outside of the main fairground entrance, blocking people on the sidewalk and forcing pedestrians to step into the street,” Wong said in a statement released a few hours after the ACLU press release. “An officer approached the Goodhues after receiving the complaints and asked if they would be willing to move to another area to pass out their literature. The Goodhues

agreed and moved to a different location.”

Wong also (predictably) defended the MPD. “The ACLU’s inference that the county settled this case because Maui Police officers are not trained in these matters is a misrepresentation of the facts,” Wong said in his statement. “All Maui Police Department officers have received training in constitutional rights, including those of the First Amendment.”

Ha! In 2011, a Maui police officer assaulted MauiTime publisher Tommy Russo as he tried to photograph the cop. In 2012, two other Maui police officers arrested Russo after he tried to film them carrying out a traffic stop (a judge later threw that case out, but the county insists it will appeal the ruling). Both were incidents in which Maui police officers clearly didn’t believe Russo had a First Amendment right to photograph cops in public.

For their part, the ACLU’s attorneys clearly think the MPD needs more training in this matter (hence the word “additional” next to “training” in their press release, clearly implying that the MPD already receives constitutional training).

“What happened to the Goodhues was wrong,” said attorney Matthew Winter of Davis Levin Livingston in the ACLU’s news release. “The County of Maui and its police have a sworn duty to uphold and protect the free speech rights of everyone on the Valley Isle, and we are hopeful in this victory that renewed focus on these rights and the additional First Amendment training for all MPD officers required as part of the settlement means fundamental rights will now be respected.”

And they forget the facts.”

Hirono’s words are a welcome change from the xenophobic jingo-fever that seems to be rising in the U.S., but given that the presidential race is still a year away, it’s probably going to get a lot worse.

EVENTACCENTS COMES TO MAUI

Skyline Eco-Adventures raised more than $8,000 for Maui children’s charities at its fifth-annual Zip for the Trees, held Nov. 15 at the Haleakala zipline course.

Participants in the community event and fundraiser soared through towering eucalyptus trees on three different ziplines at Skyline’s original course, which includes Maui’s only pendulum zipline that reaches speeds of more than 45 miles per hour. Guests were also treated to live music by Paula Fuga, Mike Love, Kaena Elaban & Kalapana Kollars and the Kanekoa Band.

In addition to zip-lining, event participants–along with Skyline employees and volunteers–planted more than 350 native trees including ‘A‘ali‘i.,Ohi’a and Koa; they also removed invasive species in a large-scale effort to restore the native Hawaii forest land.

More than 450 people attended the fifthannual event, which also provided pony rides and face painting for the keiki. All proceeds from the event benefited three local charities: the Children’s Justice Center, the Hui Malama Learning Center and Maui Youth and Family Services.

great pair of pants? Or a bustier? It may seem slightly unusual, but Hawaiian Airlines– which recently changed out the cabin seats in its interisland fleet–thought that fashion students might help them deal with their now overwhelming supply of old seats.

“In March, Hawaiian began retrofitting its Neighbor Island fleet with a modern redesign featuring lightweight main cabin seats from Acro Aircraft Seating Ltd.,” states a Nov. 18 press release from the airline. “The partnership with HonCC [Honolulu Community College] and The Cut Collective to repurpose large amounts of unused seat material was seen as a fun and creative way to demonstrate social and environmental responsibility.”

Apparently, the students responded quite enthusiastically to the challenge.

Plus, that blue dress is snappy little number and I think I need that blue jacket.”

EVER Fort Bragg, North Carolina, declared an emergency on Oct. 30 when one of its soldiers had the bright idea to arrive for a Halloween party on base dressed as a suicide bomber, with realistic-looking canisters in a wired vest. Gates to the post (headquarters of Army special forces and airborne troops) immediately went into extended lockdown and a bomb-disposal team was called. The soldier’s name was not released.

Upland, California, dermatologist Sandra Lee is a social media cult figure with a massive audience on YouTube, where her cyst- and pimple-popping videos (charmingly, soothingly narrated) have garnered 170 million views. (The “Popping” community, on the Reddit.com site, has more than 60,000 members.) Dr. Lee admits longing for “the perfect blackhead,” which to her apparently means one that is photogenic and slides out easily from its snug epidermal home. Several “Popping” fanatics told a Washington Post reporter that watching the videos is therapy for anxiety, but one fan (a “Mr. Wilson”) apparently gets his “therapy” by submitting videos of his own–unsoothing–oil-laden bursts.

HEADY SURGERY While hopeful Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero seeks funding to perform the first ever head “transplant” (with a patient already lined up), Australian doctor Geoff Askin (the country’s “godfather of spinal surgery”) recently successfully “reattached” the head of a 16-month-old boy who was badly injured in a traffic accident. The toddler’s head was described as internally “relocated” and reset onto the vertebra, using wire and rib tissue to graft the head back in place. (Nonetheless, the operation was widely regarded as a “miracle.”)

POLICE SQUAD! LIVES ON Hugo Castro, 28, wanted for questioning in October in San Jose, California, after his girlfriend was stabbed to death, helpfully presented himself at county jail. The sheriff’s deputy listened–and then suggested Castro go find a San Jose police officer. Castro did, and the deputy was subsequently reassigned. And New Hampshire state police laid down spiked “stop sticks” in November to slow down a fleeing Joshua Buzza, 37, near Greenland, New Hampshire. Buzza was apprehended, but not before he managed to avoid the sticks while goading the drivers of three squad cars over them (flattening several tires).

A Liberty, Missouri, sheriff’s deputy politely declined to identify the local man who created the sound of rapid gunfire on Oct. 13 when a “controlled” garbage burn escalated. The man decided to try extinguishing the fire by driving back and forth over it in his van, but the tires caught fire, and in addition to the van’s having a gas tank, it also carried an undisclosed amount of firearms ammunition. The van was a total loss, but the sheriff’s department said it doubted there would be an insurance claim filed.

WAIT, WHAT? Even though Darren Paden, 52, confessed almost immediately upon his 2013 arrest for a 10-year, 200-plus-episode pattern of sexual abuse of a girl that began when she was four, many Dearborn, Missouri, townspeople, astonishingly, turned on her and not him. Paden, volunteer fire chief in the 500-person town, is apparently a beloved neighbor with a lifetime of good deeds, leaving the victim, now 18, largely “ostracized” and called a liar, according to an October Kansas City Star report. Even some who accept that crimes were committed fear excessively punishing a “good man” (who, in one example offered by a neighbor, saved a man from being stomped to death by a cow). Nonetheless, in October, the judge sentenced Paden to 50 years in prison. ■

In 2015, they opened their 19th cupboard at Kahului Elementary School. Keiki Cupboard is dedicated to providing essentials to Maui’s children. They believe that no child should lack for school supplies, shoes and basic hygiene items. The mission of Keiki Cupboard is to make sure that no child attending school should ever lack the basic needs for successful integration into their academic environment.

They act as a safety net for children who may not qualify for government aid but whose parents had to make the tough choice between food and the lengthy school list handed out each year. If a child shows up at school without supplies, the staff can distribute the needed items on the spot without shame or red tape.

EAST MAUI WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP WHAT THEY DO:

The watershed partnership is made up of six partners who work to preserve approximately 100,000-acre area on the East side of Maui. The field crew does this by fencing off native areas to keep out wild ungulates (specifically pigs and goats) that destroy the forest, remove invasive plants or animals within the fenced areas along with regular maintenance and monitoring of these areas

Provide caring, holistic substance abuse treatment to women and children so families can live safe, independent and healthy lives. Malama is the only women-specific addiction treatment center on Maui and the only place on the island where young children can live with their mothers during the recovery process. They provide free childcare and early developmental screenings for their clients’ children.

Malama facilitated the reunification of more than 25 children with their mothers through our intensive case management services. Their BabySAFE Program made it possible for pregnant women dealing with substance abuse issues to access treatment and prenatal care services (including predelivery tours at the hospital) so they can get clean and give birth to healthy babies.

They offer low-cost (and often free) spay-neuter surgeries to the community in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted pets on Maui, and also have thriving volunteer and community humane education programs.

Knockout â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Creedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is one of the best â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Rockyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ďŹ lms â&#x2DC;&#x2026;â&#x2DC;&#x2026;â&#x2DC;&#x2026;â&#x2DC;&#x2026;â&#x2DC;&#x2026; Rated PG13 / 132 Min.

ou canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make a film like Creed unless you love the Rocky saga, and writer/director Ryan Coogler is clearly a fan. Cooglerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s powerful, acclaimed 2013 debut, Fruitvale Station, starred Michael B. Jordan and handled the topic of police brutality with sensitivity and alarming timeliness. His follow-up is not a sell-out Hollywood project or, what I feared, a boxing movie that shoehorns a beloved franchise into a generic story. Creed is truly Rocky 7.

Cooglerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely, sensational Rocky sequel is a passion project, made by someone who cares very much about The Italian Stallion.

For those unfamiliar with all things Rocky, Paulie, Adrian and Mickey, this stands alone just fine. If you grew up with these movies, then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my pleasure to state, with much surprise, that this is one of the best Rocky films.

Jordan stars as Adonis Creed, the son of the late boxer Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers (briefly seen in flashbacks).

Apolloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death and namesake has led his son in unfortunate directions. Adonisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; troubled childhood finds a center when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adopted by Apolloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s widow (well

played by Phylicia Rashad). Though Creed grows to be a successful businessman and has inherited his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wealth, he yearns to become a prizefighter like his father.

Suddenly, the retired Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) finds the son of his former friend/nemesis begging to train him.

The heart, grit and urban beauty of John G. Avildsenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original is intact. I loved the pathos, tenderness and heartbreaking undercurrent of the 2006 Rocky Balboa, but this oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even better. While the prior entry unwisely filmed the climactic boxing match in an un-cinematic manner, mimicking the look of an HBO Sports event, Coogler applies some stylish touches with the same aggression that Creed gives a punching bag.

The first big match is filmed as a one-take, over-the-shoulder set piece, giving the audience a you-are-there feel rare outside of Raging Bull. Rather than an artistic step down from his acclaimed breakout, Cooglerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s follow-up is an even more impressive directorial tour de force.

Jordan is very good, though the screenplay doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow him to explore Creedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volcanic emotions as much as I would have liked. Stallone once again digs deep and makes the older Balboa a sort of Willy Loman with boxing gloves. His greatest char-

acter has, once again, inspired him to avoid movie star posturing and, as in Cop Land, Stallone allows himself to appear unusually vulnerable. As an actor, Stallone is present, unmannered and moving. The moment where Balboa reflects on Adrianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death practically clobbered my tear ducts.

Tessa Thompson, the best thing about Dear White People, gives soul to the potentially clichĂŠd character of Creedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love interest. Playing Ricky Conlan, Creedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opponent, Tony Bellew has a chilling stare that makes him a perfect villain.

Creed earns its formulaic, corny moments because so much of this soars. A few clichĂŠd moments surface, though many potential story mistakes (particularly the

potential for shameless melodrama) are wisely avoided. The scenes of Creed training with Rocky at an old gym are riveting (so is the knockout shot where the camera circles around an aggressive training session).

It ends with an opening for another sequel and, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m surprised to admit, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d welcome one. The chemistry between Jordan and Stallone is so good and the story has rich emotional territory to explore, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m down for another round. The story of Creed and Balboa is about the rehabilitation of the soul and everyone here, in front of and behind the camera, is giving this their all. Who would have thought that, next to Rocky II, the best sequel to a movie from 1976 opened in 2015. â&#x2013;

It sucks being relegated to defense, just because the last few shots you took at the goal flew well wide of the mark. That, however, is part of the deal when you’re on a team, my dear. You sometimes have to step back and admit that someone else might do a better job, as galling as that is. This is, sadly, one of those times. Try to cede your spotlighted or leadership role with good grace and humor–the way you always hope others will give it up to you when it is your turn to shine.

Watch out that you don’t go on sugar overload during the holidays. Your cravings–and reactions–are more intense at the moment than at any time in recent memory. As you swirl a candy cane in your steaming mug of mulled wine, contemplate how you can best achieve a balanced state of moderation without drastically cutting into your enjoyment of this time of year (or losing too many of your coping mechanisms for it, for that matter).
