Not the best use of 'aloha,' but not the worst, either...

ON THE CULTURAL APPROPRIATION OF ‘ALOHA’

Hawaii aloha (noun): greeting/farewell; (adjective): welcoming, friendly, kind Maybe I’ve just lived out here too long.

But seriously, “aloha” isn’t a mere colloquialism, but an actual word in the Hawaiian language–a language spoken by peoples conquered by the United States in the late 19th century. It’s also (at least as far as its native meaning is concerned) far more than a mere greeting and/or farewell.

In fact, it was a profound term of affection that “upholds, reaffirms, and binds relationships,” according to University of Hawaii cultural specialist Malcolm Naea Chun. “Aloha should not be taken lightly,” Chun wrote in his slim 2011 book Aloha: Traditions of Love & Affection (which sadly seems to be out of print).

“It should not be used casually or frivolously.”

And this is where the Slate slang piece veers into cultural appropriation. For those not up to speed on the latest in social science academia, here’s a great definition of “cultural appropriation,” taken from this Aug. 30, 2015 Huffington Post blog item from Kadia Blagrove: “Cultural appropriation is when white media trivializes and adopts aspects of other cultures without proper recognition, representation and respect.”

Though Slate and Malady are rather flippant about all this, I’m not blaming them for equating “aloha” with “hella” (California) or

MPD CONDUCTING SURVEY The Maui Police Department has posted a new “Citizen’s Survey” online, and they want you–yeah, YOU–to fill it out.

“We encourage the public to participate in this survey to assist the Department in improving services to the community,” stated a Sept. 1 MPD news release.

It’s part of a move by the department to “improve services” throughout the county. “In the interest of improving services to the community, the Maui Police Department is conducting this citizen survey to evaluate public attitudes and opinions pertaining to the level of law enforcement services provided,” states the survey itself. “The results will be used to identify spe-

Let me start off by saying I love Slate. com. Their political, scientific and cultural commentary and analysis is usually smart and readable. Usually.

I discovered a notable exception on Sept. 3.

Titled “United Slang of America,” the piece offers up what author Matthew J. X. Malady believes is the “official word” or preeminent “unique word” of each state. It’s a humor piece, of course, and many of the results are clearly supposed to be funny (“hella” for California, “cattywampus” for Alabama, “whirlygust” for Tennessee and so forth).

Of course I skipped right down to Hawaii, to see the word Malady picked as the representative slang of Hawaii, as well as its definition and usage, and that’s when I got queasy:

“chughole” (Kentucky). No, culpability for that crime lays at all of our feet. All Slate did was report that people in the U.S. really do see “aloha” as just a kitschy way of saying “hello,” and have done so for many years. And that’s true.

Make no mistake: the appropriation of concepts like “aloha” happens here in Hawaii, too.

Remember Aloha Airlines? Seen an Aloha Waste garbage truck lately? Or any of the other myriad products and/or services that find the need to insert “aloha” into the name? It’s all using Hawaiian culture and ideas for contemporary commercial reasons, and it’s hella messed up.

All that being said, the true “official” slang word for Hawaii is obviously “da kine,” brah.

And what Nelson has just said to me seems like an open invitation to chance it.”

Dogs can smell bombs and drugs, and recent groundbreaking research in Hawaii has determined that our canine friends can even be trained to detect life-threatening bacterial infections.

Angel, a three-year-old Labrador Retriever, is one of three dogs recently trained to detect bacterial infections in a hospitalized patient. Angel, a familiar sight at the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific in Honolulu, has worked as a full-time Hospital Facility Dog for the past two years. She not only brings comfort to hospitalized patients, she also may be the key to providing early detection of life threatening infections. Angel is also the first dog ever to alert hospital staff to an infection in a hospitalized patient.

Assistance Dogs of Hawaii–which has a training center in Makawao–has partnered with The Rehab Hospital of the Pacific, Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii and The Pine Street Foundation on a project to train dogs in a hospital setting, using samples from hospital patients. The study, which has been underway for the past year, has given hope to Angel’s handler at the Rehab Hospital, therapist Kate Julian.

“Angel is amazing,” Julian said. “She can detect infections in patients before they have symptoms and even before the laboratory tests can.”

Maureen Maurer, the study’s Principal Investigator, said the group of organizations is encouraged by the results and the potential they are seeing for the dogs to accurately detect various types of bacteria at a very

early stage. “We knew they could do it based on our previous study, but to see them actually working in the hospital has been incredible,” Maurer said. “We are so thankful to the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific for partnering with us in this study.

“Dogs know when someone is sick,” Maurer added. “They can all smell disease like cancer or infections, we are just teaching them how to communicate this knowledge to us.”

A team from Assistance Dogs of Hawaii has been invited to present their research at the Inaugural Conference on Medical Bio-Detection at Cambridge University in England on Sept. 15, 2015. Leading researchers from around the world will be sharing the latest findings in this exciting new field; funding for the study was provided by a matching grant from the Makana Aloha Foundation and private donors.

“We are excited about sharing our findings with other researchers from around the world,” Maurer said.

“There is so much untapped potential that dogs have to detect other types of infections like MRSA and C-diff. This is just the beginning.” Studies have shown that dogs are able to detect one part per trillion and have a sense of smell that is over 100,000 times stronger than humans. Researchers around the world are proving that man’s best friend can detect a growing number of diseases in humans such as cancer, diabetes and epilepsy.

The field of medical bio-detection has been growing, but the main emphasis so far has been on cancer detection; the current study on bio-detection is unique that it has a practical application. “While several studies have had

very promising results, there has not yet been a practical application of the findings,” said Dr. Michael McCulloch, who is the director of the Pine Street Foundation in California and is a leading visionary in cancer research. “What is so exciting about the current study being done in Hawaii is that it is the first to be applied in a practical way.

This is a big step forward in the field of medical bio-detection.”

The idea for the research came in 2010, when two clients attending the Team Training Camp at Assistance Dogs of Hawaii were hospitalized for urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTI’s are a serious medical issue for many people with disabilities, who have impaired bladder function and use catheters that can introduce bacteria. People with neurological impairment may also not experience the warning signs of an infection, such as pain. Without treatment, UTIs can spread rapidly to the kidney and bloodstream, causing sepsis, which can be life threatening. UTIs are also the number one hospital acquired infection for all patients.

“UTI’s pose a serious health risk to people with disabilities due to the associated complications that can occur,” said Dr. Amen Somal, a physiatrist at the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific.

“Early detection of infection is the key to preventing these potentially lifethreatening complications.”

Maurer thought it would be possible to apply the protocol for cancer detection to bacterial infections and train Service Dogs to alert their partners to early stages of an infection, thus avoiding serious complications and hospital-

British director Missouri Williams brought an adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear to the London Courtyard art facility in August for a one-week run, centered on a human actor struggling to stage the play using only sheep. The pivotal character, Lear’s daughter Cordelia, famously withholds flattering Lear (thus forgoing inheriting the kingdom), and her silence forever tortures Lear–and of course silence is something sheep pull off well. Actor Alasdair Saksena admitted there is an “element of unpredictability with the sheep,” but lauded their punctuality, calmness and lack of fee demands. Williams promised another Courtyard run for King Lear With Sheep in the fall.

The president of the University of New Hampshire publicly complained in July about the “bias-free language guide” posted on the school’s website–since, he said, it denounces use of such words as “Americans” (as insensitive to South Americans), “seniors” (better, “people of advanced age”), “rich” (should be “person of material wealth”) and “poor” (change to “person who lacks advantages that others have”). (One state senator mockingly suggested changing the state’s “Live Free or Die” motto to “Live Free But Upset No One.”)

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Virginia, has an award-winning “telework” program allowing patent examiners flexible schedules, leading half of the 8,300 to work at home full-time–despite a 2014 Washington Post report on employees gaming the system. In August, the agency’s inspector general exposed several of the most ridiculous cases of slacking off, including one examiner who was paid for at least 18 weeks’ work last year that he did not perform and that his manager did not notice. (The examiner, who had been issued nine poor-performance warnings since 2012 and who had flaunted his carefree “workday” to co-workers for years, abruptly resigned two hours before a meeting on the charge and thus left with a “clean” personnel record.) Wrote the Post, “It’s a startling example of a culture that’s maddening.”

Only China and Iran execute more prisoners, but Saudi Arabia also has a soft side–for jihadists. Saudis who defy a ban on leaving the country to fight (usually against the common enemy, Syria’s Bashar al-Assad) are, if they return, imprisoned at a maximum-security facility in Riyadh, but with liberal short “vacations” at “Family House,” hotel-quality quarters with good food, playgrounds for children and other privileges (monitored through guest-satisfaction surveys). Returning jihadists also have access to education and psychologists and receive the equivalent of $530 a month with ATM privileges. The purpose is to persuade the warriors not to return to the battlefield once released, and officials estimate that the program is about 85 percent effective.

Impersonating a police officer in a traffic stop is not uncommon, but Logan Shaulis, 19, was apparently so judgment-impaired on May 30 that he set up his own elaborate “DUI checkpoint” on route 601 near Somerset, Pennsylvania, complete with road flares, demanding “license, registration and insurance” from driver after driver.

The irony of the inebriated Shaulis judging motorists’ sobriety was short-lived, as real troopers soon arrived and arrested him (on DUI, among other charges).

TOUGH LOVE Sexual assault is certainly punishable in New Hampshire by prison time, but pending legislation assumes prison is not enough. By House Bill 212, anyone who commits sexual assault while out hunting or fishing will also have his hunting or fishing license revoked.

THE AMERICANIZATION OF CHINA After five students drowned while swimming in a reservoir in China’s Yunnan province, parents of two of them sued the reservoir’s management company, complaining that it should have posted signs or barricades or, even better, guards to keep kids from frolicking in the dangerous waters. According to an August report, the management company has now countersued the parents, demanding compensation for the additional water-treatment measures it was forced to undertake because the reservoir had been “polluted” by their children’s corpses.

ADVENTURES IN TURTLE SEX A female Yangtze giant softshell turtle, believed to be the last female of her species, was artificially inseminated in May at Suzhou Zoo in China through the efforts of animal fertility experts from around the world. She is thought to be more than 100 years old (as was the last male to “romance” her, although their courtship produced only unfertilized eggs).

ALREADY HAS ITS FIRST CASE:

CANE BURNING

I: The Environmental Court and Judge Joseph Cardoza If you’ve lived on Maui for more than a year, you’ve most likely not only heard the arguments pro and con on cane burning by Hawaii Commercial & Sugar (HC&S), but have also formed your own opinion. No longer just tinder to ignite public debates over Maui’s environment and land use, the controversial cultivation method matter will be the first case to be heard in Maui County’s branch of the new Hawaii Environmental Court.

Hawaii is one of only two states to have an such a court (Vermont is the other), and while this court does not have any special powers not granted to other state courts, it does seek to hear all the issues related to Hawaii’s environment in one distinct place.

Set up in July 2014 by Act 218, the court officially opened on July 1, 2015. “The legislature finds that environmental disputes are currently dealt with in a variety of courts,” states Act 218. “This organizational structure inadvertently promotes inconsistent application of the wide variety of environmental laws.”

The purpose of the statute, said Michael D. Wilson, Hawaii Supreme Court Associate Justice in an Aug. 14, 2015 Honolulu Star Advertiser story, “is to recognize that we’re facing environmental problems that need to be addressed that aren’t being addressed, and in order to take care of these very pressing issues we need to have a court that can address land, air, water, the environment.” Wilson also expressed the desire for legal consistency in environmental matters. He named the high profile Superferry dispute (2007-2009) an an example of a case that “would have benefited from being heard in the environmental court.”

Circuit Chief Judge Joseph E. Cardoza of Maui, expressed the view widely shared among those who attended the statewide meetings prior to the legislation, when he described the environmental court as “historic.”

And indeed, it will be Judge Cardoza who will hear the cane burning case–Civil No. 15-1-0351(3)–that is set to begin in his courtroom soon.

A motion to dismiss had been scheduled to be heard on Sept. 16. But according to Lance D.

Collins, the attorney for the plaintiffs, Cardoza has already told both sides to go into mediation.

Collins said there will be a “short status conference” regarding mediation on Sept. 16.

Cardoza is a well known figure in Maui legal circles. He was selected to serve as Chief Judge and Administrative Judge of the Second Circuit (County of Maui) in May 2012. Prior to that, Cardoza had been a circuit court judge on Maui since 1999. He was previously Maui County’s prosecuting attorney and later founded the law firm of Cardoza and Fukuoka. He’s a past president of the Maui County Bar Association and Hawaii Prosecuting Attorneys Association.

Perhaps his best known prior judicial action was the temporary restraining order he issued in August 2007 barring the Superferry from accessing Kahului Harbor.

That action suspended the Maui service. It was one of a series of events that led to the shutdown of the Superferry.

As for the outcomes, Cardoza could have ruled in favor of halting cane burning by finding that there is sufficient evidence that the defendants–the Hawaii Department of

Health (DOH) and Alexander & Baldwin LLC (A&B, the parent company of HC&S) have not complied with the law.

Or he could have ruled that the defendants are in compliance and they may continue the practice which has been an established harvesting procedure here for the better part of a century.

But he seems to have already chosen a third alternative: some form of mediation in which the parties would meet to arrive at a solution and report back to the court.

II: Stop Cane Burning and the grounds for their suit Bringing the first legal challenge to the long established agricultural practice here is Stop Cane Burning, an unincorporated association founded in 2011 which claims to have 1,500 members. The group and plaintiffs Trinette Furtado, Karen Chun and Bradley Edwards are represented by attorney Lance D. Collins.

Volner noted the group sued the DOH demanding the stoppage of cane burning and later added HC&S as a defendant, then later filed another action, demanding the immediate termination of cane burning pending resolution of their lawsuit.

“The group claims that all it wants is for HC&S to harvest in other ways, and that it does not want to shut down our operation,”Volner said. “The problem is this: if their demand for an immediate ban on cane burning is granted, they will get their way by default–their action will trigger the closure of HC&S. We cannot continue to farm knowing we cannot burn to harvest the crop for some unknown period of time, while their lawsuit is being pursued.”

For Volner and HC&S, the stakes are high.

“At risk,” Volner said, “are the 36,000 acres of sugarcane farmland that provide open space and vistas that our visitors and all of us enjoy.

What becomes of our 750 employees and their families and the thousands of residents whose jobs also depend on HC&S, if they suddenly have no income to put dinner on the table or to pay their mortgages?

“We want to be a good neighbor and have worked actively with DOH to adhere to a complex set of burn procedures, which we implement field by field, to minimize the impact to our community,” he continued. “We have invested millions of dollars exploring different harvesting techniques and alternative crops, none of which have yet proven to be viable for 36,000 acres.”

In fact, HC&S insists that its “survival” depends on cane burning.

“The ability to continue cane burning remains a critical factor in the survival of our company,” Volner said. “We continue to look for new crops, evaluate other sugar by-products and biofuel options and research cutting edge renewable energy technologies… We intend to fight this request for an injunction, which we believe is an attack on the farming community, local residents and businesses and our very existence as a company.”

The 912-page documents sets out the legal arguments for their assertion that the plaintiffs have suffered multiple and serious adverse health impacts from the practice.

According to the documents filed with the court, Furtado was born and raised on Maui. Three generations of her family worked for the sugar plantation. The suit claims that Furtado and her daughter have suffered physically from smoke and other air pollution caused by agricultural burning.

Chun, a long-time resident of Maui, was an avid and medal winning outrigger canoe paddler until she was diagnosed with a pulmonary disease caused by agricultural burning near her home, court documents assert. They also state that Chun’s paddling activities are restricted due to her chronic pulmonary disease.

Edwards was born and raised in Hawaii.

For the last 15 years, he’s worked with at-risk children and families on Maui. The filing alleges that he and his son have suffered physically from smoke and other air pollution caused by agricultural burning.

Also joining in the suit is Joy D. Brann, who holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. From 1994 to 2012, she served as a public health outreach educator and contract administrator for the State of Hawaii Department of Health (DOH).

Her sworn statement asserts cane burning has been linked to an increased incidence of asthma in nearby populations, genotoxicity in field workers, and the causation of cancer. It also claims that biogenic silica fibers resulting from cane burning posed a substantial risk to the health of sugar cane workers. “BSF fibers had physical dimensions believed to pose the greatest risk of asbestosis and lung cancer,” she says, according to court documents.

The plaintiffs seek a judicial decision that the air pollution control regulatory system that permits open air agricultural burning is unlawful.

Among the multiple points of law raised are claims that the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights to a clean and healthful environment have been violated and that the DOH did not comply with all applicable rules when granting agricultural burn permits. According to the suit, as far back as 1971 the

The office of the State Attorney General is representing the DOH. The AG’s office filed its response to the lawsuit with the court on Aug. 3, citing 16 defenses including sovereign immunity, lack of jurisdiction and lack of standing.

Alexander & Baldwin, the other defendant, is represented by the Honolulu law firm Case Schutte LLP. On Aug. 6, Case Schutte filed a 91-page motion to dismiss, saying in essence that the court lacks jurisdiction in this matter for a number of complex and technical reasons, especially as related to Federal EPA regulations. The motion to dismiss also asserted that should the court decide otherwise and void the HC&S permit, it should also void the more than 100 other agricultural burn permits issued by the DOH. The DOH joined this motion, an action which is called a “substantive joinder.”

e’re very sad to say that Maui lost one of its brightest stars this week. The artist Piero Resta passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75. Giovanni Steven Cappelli, the owner of Casanova in Makawao and Bistro Casanova in Kahului, called Resta “a beautiful being who melted in Maui magic and made our lives richer.

“His art is all over my restaurants,” Cappelli told us. “It stays with us forever. I am so grateful that he was my best friend. I wish everybody had a best friend like Piero.”

Resta was a person who seemed to see the world in brighter colors than usual.

He loved everything about art, expression and the power of an individual to imagine and create.

“I am an artist because I am attracted to the alchemy of creativity and to the presence of the Muse,” Resta said in his own artist’s statement, posted on Pieroresta. com. “With each new encounter, I discover new universes, new ways of seeing and breathing, and I work with the colors and the shapes of my explorations.”

MauiTime readers saw this philosophy and energy most vividly in a 2003 story on his then-new Paia gallery known as The Artery.

“It is more urgent than ever to have a space for people to talk and gather,” Resta told writer Joe Gatto. “It is important to have this sanctuary and laboratory as an artist, but also that it is open to the public. Young people who want to learn need places like this; it is a part of the liberal arts life. The Artery is a private place that is a public place. Public art enriches everyone’s life and makes them more intelligent.

“My duty is to be an inspiration,” Resta added. “We’ll make history here, I assure you of that.”

Born in the town of Voghera in Northern Italy in 1940, Resta studied architecture at the Instituto Leonardo Da Vinci.

In his 20s, Resta explored Europe, experimenting with his art. He soon settled in New York City, where he did fashion photography and often appeared at Andy

Warhol’s Silver Factory, according to his biography at Pieroresta.com.

But Resta kept moving west, first to California, where he lived as a hermit studying philosophy and mysticism, and later Maui, where he built his magnificent five-acre Villa Tamarinda in Kaupo. The whole place was a work of art. “Italian arches and columns rise to the sky, the kitchen and pizza oven are sculpted into rock walls, mango and papaya trees offer shade, and ancient fishing villages and waterfalls surround the area,” according to Pieroresta.com.

“Profound and exalted inspiration is inevitable at the villa.”

The villa was also home to Resta’s Kaupo Art Sanctuary, a kind of eternal festival of the arts that included works from multiple galleries, various studios, a sculpture garden, symposiums, films and poetry. Chefs, musicians, actors and other artists would often stay there, living and working together.

Resta created many of his works in the villa, but most people saw his art at places like Paia galleries and Capelli’s restaurants. In 2007, Maui Hands in Paia promoted one of his shows by saying that, “For over forty years, Piero Resta has explored our presence within the cosmos, seeking to discover and expand the inner self by developing a new sense of awareness.”

Former MauiTime Associate Editor Samantha Campos knew Resta well, and she often mentioned his latest show or works in her Holoholo Girl columns. We asked her for a few thoughts on Resta, and she ended up summing up his life and influence as only she could: “Most everyone knew Piero Resta as one of Maui’s most accomplished artists,” Campos said. “But he was so much more than that. He exalted beauty, celebrated the sublime, suffused love and spirit into everything he did. His Edenesque villa in Kaupo was a joyful hub of creativity and sensuality; his notorious gatherings there brought together a wide swath of island friends and lovers, poets and artists, longtime residents and those visiting from afar. He was a man who lit up any room he was in with a smile, exuding charisma and charm. To me and other young artists on Maui he was endlessly encouraging, offering genuine support and affection. He taught me what it means to live like an artist, to infuse art into the beauty of living, to collaborate, be curious and find inspiration in everything. To me, Piero epitomized the magic of Maui. I’m so grateful to have known him and to have been blessed by his light.”

James Bond, CGI Snoopy, Steve Jobs and Star Wars Here’s our 2015 Fall movie preview

M

att Damon returns to space, CGI Snoopy, the return of James Bond and a new Star Wars film?

It’s time to bid dinos, fast cars, superheros and rappers adios, as the big guns of the summer are changing hands. Between now and Christmas, here are 11 reasons you’ll be at the movies on opening day:

THE VISIT (opens Sept. 11) The Gist: Kathryn Hahn stars in this horror tale of two kids enduring a terrifying visit at their grandparent’s house.

Why It Could Rock: It’s an M. Night Shyamalan found-footage horror movie, his return to small, fear-inducing filmmaking.

This is the curiosity item of the year.

Unless: The trailer is both unsettling and odd. Will it lapse into unintentional comedy, like many of his recent horror films?

STEVE JOBS (opens Oct. 9) The Gist: Danny Boyles’ take on the Apple founder’s story, starring Michael Fassbender.

Why It Could Rock: A great ensemble cast and a filmmaker with a sharp visual approach. This will undoubtedly be better than the recent Ashton Kutcher movie.

Unless: Boyle over-directs when the screenplay doesn’t work. Was Fassbender really the best replacement for original star Christian Bale?

BRIDGE OF SPIES (opens Oct. 16) The Gist: Steven Spielberg’s World War II spy thriller, starring Tom Hanks Why It Could Rock: The Spielberg/ Hanks team-ups can’t miss.

Unless: Oh wait, they did The Terminal.

Never mind.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which better rock....

BLACK MASS (opens Sept. 18) The Gist: Johnny Depp stars as the scary, vile gangster who inspired Jack Nicholson’s character in The Departed.

Why It Could Rock: After drowning in whimsy, Depp returns with a deadly serious, immersive performance that might be his best.

Unless: Will this be as unpleasant as the man it’s portraying?

THE MARTIAN (opens Nov. 25) The Gist: Ridley Scott’s adaptation of the beloved sci-fi novel, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stuck on the red planet.

Why It Could Rock: The screenplay is faithful to the source, Scott is in his element and the supporting cast includes Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig. It’s this year’s Interstellar.

Unless: Last year, Scott’s take on Moses supposedly couldn’t miss but did. He’s one of our greatest living filmmakers but his work is extremely divisive.

THE PEANUTS MOVIE (opens Nov. 6) The Gist: Charles M Schultz Peanuts gang gets their first CGI-rendered animated film.

Why It Could Rock: Devoid of hip updating and crass, trendy touches (like the recent Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield movies), this one goes for the heart and the funny bone.

Unless: Kids turns their noses to it, in the same way the smart and sweet Frankenweenie bored them.

THE WALK (opens Oct. 2) The Gist: Robert Zemeckis’ tells the true story of the man who walked between the Twin Towers on a wire.

Why It Could Rock: Zemeckis is one of our great visual artists, coming off a previous adult-minded triumph, Flight.

Unless: Will the high wire scene be the only one that soars? Can Gordon-Levitt nail his character’s accent?

SPECTRE (opens Nov. 6) The Gist: The Skyfall director/actor team Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig return to the world of 007.

Why It Could Rock: Once again, a classy, no-nonsense, character-driven approach to James Bond that connects the new generation of fans and longtime fans of the series.

Unless: We know it’s serious but will it still be fun?

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA (opens Dec. 11) The Gist: Ron Howard’s sea adventure on the story that inspired Moby Dick.

Why It Could Rock: Word of mouth is so strong, the early spring release was pushed all the way back to Oscar season.

Unless: Did the onslaught of late 2014/ early 2015 trailers already peak our interest? Blackhat and Howard’s own Rush proved that star Chris Hemsworth has a

SNOWDEN (opens Dec. 25) The Gist: Oliver Stone’s take on the Edward Snowden tale, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley.

Why It Could Rock: No one mixes politics and entertainment better (and with more controversial results) than Stone.

Unless: Like W., audiences decide they hate it, don’t want to watch it and that the film lies… without even seeing it first. ■

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (opens Dec. 18) The Gist: A Long Time Ago, In a Galaxy, Far, Far Away…

Why It Could Rock: Director/co-screenwriter J.J. Abrams loves Star Wars, and it’s always shown. Is there anyone with a pulse who doesn’t want to see this, right now?

Unless: There’s no way it can live up to decades of hype and speculation.

If you’re flush with ideas, a blank canvas feels like a promise. When you’re less than inspired, though, it’s more like a prison sentence.
